#CYOA game: Dipper

Your name is DIPPER PINES. You are a MAGICIAN, of sorts, and ASPIRING HERO (sorta). You live in GRAVITY FALLS with your UNCLE and TWIN SISTER, and you're a pretty SMART GUY.
You were just working on a NEW SPELL and. Uh.
....It kinda didn't work.
The good news is that nothing exploded this time. You mostly practice anything really inventive out in the woods for exactly this reason, what with the whole 'demonically powered magic defaulting to fire, like 90% of the time on a fuckup'. Your last attempt sizzled itself into ashes. This one left the circle broken apart in a weird 'bzzt' sound, but overall, wasn't incendiary.
So much for that idea, huh. You really thought you had it this time.

CYOA Game: Part Five!
"You're an idiot," You say, voice flat.
"I'm not hearing a no." Bill's voice has turned, if possible, even more smug. "You got something up your sleeve, don'tcha?"
Technically, yes, but also no. You didn't have anything nefariously flirty in mind; your only 'plan' for the day was neutral at best. The only *current* plan is not letting Bill know you didn't pull one off.
Bill, for his part, takes the silence as confirmation. "Jeez, sapling, you usually got a better retort than 'nothing'. You must have something big going to get your brain all busy." A tut, sounding amused. "Come up with a better coverup next time."
You glance down at the failed spell, and grimace.
Lying to Bill is pointless; even after he's had a few, he'll zero in on it in no time flat. Part of you would like the hand in figuring out what went wrong. Another, bigger part doesn't feel like hearing mockery on top of your failure....
So you change the subject instead.
"How's the party going?"
"Eh, I've been to better. The host is a drag, it's a cash bar, and half the crowd's playing friggin' 'spin the human'. I got zilch to do here." Bill sounds grumpy; he must not be having the best time - and consequently, has spent the majority of it at the bar. Paid or not.
You make a soft agreeing sound. Yep, doesn't sound great. Bill huffs, going on about the rest of the party's inadequacy, talking over you in slightly slurred current of complaints -
But an idea must strike him, because his next sentence is oddly perky - "Hey! Why don't you come join me instead? Not like you got anything going on, allegedly!"

CYOA part two!
You, DIPPER PINES, examine what's left of the spell circle, and your mood lowers a little more. All that work, and it looked so promising!
There's a lot of stuff you're investigating. Tasks you've taken on, to be heroic. Problem is, finding stuff is pretty hard. While your demonic husband has (arguably) infinite knowledge, his 'all-seeing eye' has a lot of blind spots - when he's willing to cooperate at all. A spell to track things down would have been great, if you could get it working right.
So much for that.
The lines are broken. Runes, dissipated. Clearly the magic built up, was structured and coalesced, then released with a weird staticy fizzle. Taking out the clean lines you drew and leaving a lightning-webbed mess in its wake.
Technically speaking, the base of this spell - before you started messing with it - was 'guidance'. Which you thought was a close enough semantic leap.
It just didn't... do anything. All the magical energy has dispersed, and there doesn't seem to have been any effect.

Tumblr media
With a heavy sigh, you take out your phone. A quick look tells you it's exactly who you thought it was.
Not the first time he's rang this evening, you missed a few calls earlier. But that wasn't important, and your project was.
This time, you answer.
Before you can chastise him, or even point out that it's like three in the freakin' morning -
"Heyyyy there sapling!" Bill exclaims brightly. And loud enough to make you jerk the phone away a few inches. "What's up with you?"
Though Bill's voice has a certain piercing quality to it, you can sort of. Hear something else? He's not alone. It's easy to tell that there's noise in the background, it makes you frown. Off somewhere else, you can make out some loud conversational noises. Not quite distant, but faintly faded. Like someone skipped off to a little private corner of a much bigger room.
You'd kind of been wondering why you hadn't heard from Bill earlier - but yeah, this makes sense.
He's been partying.
Still at a party, too, judging by the way there's a distant scream, and a raucous cheer of inhuman voices.
"I haven't heard from the biggest pain in my angles in so long!" Bill continues, the slightest bit of lilt to his words. A little bit blurry, courtesy of - by experienced estimation - about half a dozen drinks. "Not even a peep! Pretty cold of ya, sapling." Then, with a smile you can practically hear- "If you're planning something, don't think you're gonna get one over on me."
It's only been, like. Uh. You check the date in your head, and grimace. Okay, maybe over a day. You've been busy.

CYOA Part Four! Putting a break because it's longish.
Okay. You can do this.
Kneeling down next to the magic circle, you flip through your notes. Comparing this and that. Checking over everything for flaws in construction, and focus, and intent -
The sun's already set. But you can feel that you're close to a breakthrough, examining every aspect of the broekn spell, and casting around for magical residue around. You don't need to sleep - can't, in fact - but you need to figure this out.
And, eventually, you do.
You plop down on the ground. Frustrated, and grumpy.
Technically, the spell did work. The problem was the lack of direction.
You never set a target. You didn't have one in mind, you were making the structure with blank spaces to fill in. And it completed anyway. Without a thing to be guided towards another thing, all that energy was unleashed without any targets. Something's going to be guided somewhere, at least.
Welp. Great job. Another screwup, though without immediate effects. And not the first time you've sent out a lead line out into the ether, without thinking. Exactly what's going to happen is impossible to tell - but one thing is clear.
If Bill hears about this, he's going to make fun of you for ages.
You settle back on your heels, and rub at your eyes. It's dark now, the circle lit by the bright blue fire you set up around it. What time is it, anyway?
Must be very late slash early, though, you spent a ton of time on that. And someone's calling you.
