One Last Order
It's been a while since I got into writing at all, let alone fanfics. But I had this thought last night and it's been bugging me since. I hope someone enjoys this. I know I enjoyed writing it :)
Pairing: CT-7567/Captain Rex x Reader (g/n, no physical descriptions, no use of y/n)
Mood: Angst/hurt. Post Order 66
Warnings: None really unless you're sensitive to bittersweet stories. SFW but mentions of intimacy with no details.
WC: 900 words
Summary: It was the hardest decision he'd ever made. But Rex was determined to see it through. He lost everything else. He couldn't bear to lose you, too. And so, he gives you the one order you hate the most ... the one he hopes in vain you'll follow.
Part 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was for the best. He knew it. He couldn’t bear to contemplate the alternative.
Your home planet was on the edges of the Mid-Rim, far from any hyperspace lanes. You’d be able to resign — as a nat-born who had been assigned to the 501st for logistical support, you’d technically fulfilled your obligations to the army when the war ended.
The Empire wouldn’t waste its resources on retaining you. You’d be able to slip off its radar and quietly build a new life.
But with him … you’d never know peace. There’d be a target on your back. And he’d be the one painting it on, tainting your life with his.
“I … I couldn’t save my brothers. Please. Please let me keep you safe. Let me go.”
The pain etched into your eyes almost broke him. The tears you’d been so stalwart in holding back finally broke free, cascading down the lovely curve of your cheeks.
That he was the one hurting you twisted his gut, sending bile rising up to his throat.
But better a broken heart now than a life forever in danger, he thought, letting his own reasoning drown out your passioned rebuttal.
He never expected, never even thought he could experience anything like what he did with you. He was a soldier. A damn good one at that. He led his men with pride in service of the Republic, in service of freedom and peace. Fighting beside his brothers gave him a purpose he never questioned.
You shattered that certainty the first time he caught sight of your wry smile.
You stood toe to toe with General Skywalker, matching his stubbornness and determination when convinced you were right. Your ability and skill in your field — and your dedication to ensuring the troopers of his legion were as prepared and supported as possible no matter the mission — never failed to impress him, even long after he knew to expect it.
But that first smile. Watching you laugh in the mess with his brothers, holding your own against Fives’ incessant badgering, brightening Kix’s ever-gruff expression, calming and welcoming the newest shinies warmed him from the inside out. You never saw them as just clones. You treated them as comrades. As men. You gave them a soft place to land after facing another day of harsh reality.
It drew him to you, needing with increasing desperation to have that smile trained on him.
And when it finally did, when your eyes began softening at the sight of him, that warmth ignited into an inferno that radiated from his very core. He was shocked he didn’t burn you.
On the contrary, you only came closer, eventually curling around him in his small bunk, creating a bubble of warmth and light so precious that he’d almost forget you were on a ship in the dark, cold void of space.
He’d never betray his brothers, his mission. But you revealed a new way of living. Of loving. In your arms, he found solace after battle — a refuge he never wanted to leave but one that gave him the strength to each time he was recalled to battle. In your bed, he found a new purpose, a pleasure he would chase at every opportunity just to see you come undone for him.
And it soothed him, knowing with each step he took on the ground, you were back at command, tracking him, watching out for him.
So, no. He never wanted to leave your side. Without the GAR, without the 501st, his general or commander, he could dedicate the rest of his life to you. And, stars, did he want to. Every cell in his manufactured body wanted to take you into his arms and keep you there forever, giving you his heart, his very soul if you asked.
But it was too selfish.
For now, the Empire thought he was dead. That wouldn’t last forever. He may not be a captain anymore, but he was still a soldier. And he would fight against the Empire that stole everything from him. He would gladly give his last breath to free the brothers still trapped in its maw and the civilians caught under its boot.
It was a dangerous path; one he knew he had to take. But you would not be coming with him.
With one last sigh, he stepped in closer to you, his gloved hand gently caressing your cheek and wiping away a tear, only for it to be replaced immediately. Your eyes slid shut as you clenched your jaw, hardening your soft face and causing the corner of his own mouth to twitch up for just a moment.
You never were graceful when you lost a fight.
“I love you, ner karta. So, so much.” His words were barely a whisper, too scared that anything louder would shatter your threadbare resignation … and his. His lips were even gentler, barely pressing against the delicate skin of your forehead.
“Be safe. Be happy.” One last order from your Captain. He didn’t believe in any deity, but he prayed to every one he’d ever heard of and to the Force itself you’d obey.
Then, he hardened himself. With an abrupt turn, he left your warmth behind as he forced each step, letting his mind drift as his feet carried him further and further away from his heart.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's so funny, I usually prefer reading fluffy, comforting fics/ficlets or slow burn but with happy endings. But this just demanded my attention lol.
Part 2 is now done! It is spicy - or citrusy, for my fellow Tumblr veterans - reunion with Rebels!Rex.

𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐭
Captain Rex x F!Jedi!Reader Pt.2 of Forget Me Not Rex has finally settled down on a faraway, isolated planet. Finally, he has found some semblance of peace from the ongoing war against the Empire. Finally, he can take the time to recover from losing you, but how long will that last? Word Count: 3007 Warnings: Swearing, making out, old injuries. A/N: This has been specifically requested, and can be thought of as either the continuation of the previous story or an alternative ending :) It was going to turn into a big fat smut but my brain couldn't handle posting that (I've never written or posted a full smut before!!)
Tumblr media
Vast golden fields swayed gently in the warm, evening summer breeze. The golden sun illuminated the landscape, a warm glow settling over the hay and Rex's figure, who was relaxing on his porch, hands behind his head as he observed the sight before him.
How many times had he dreamt of such a sight? Of owning his own little farm, of owning a couple of banthas and chickens and goats?
Too many times for his younger, prouder self to admit.
Where his brothers used to loudly fantasise over their ideal futures, he was too busy playing the perfect soldier, sticking to his obligations, rules and limitations.
But now? Now he had that one small bundle of joy, held tightly within his iron-hard grasp. And he wasn't about to go exchanging it for anything else. Not in a million lifetimes.
The loud, content bellowing of a few banthas stripped him of his thoughts, his gaze looking for the one particular creature that always seemed to make the most noise. Far ahead, to his left, was one bantha, rolling its body in the hay, short tail wagging left to right, continuous hums and moos escaping its throat in ground-shaking vibrations.
A soft smile tugged at Rex's lips; that was his oldest, and his first ever Bantha.
He had spent the last four years nurturing and caring for the creature, leading it over stretches of land, until he was finally able to settle down in an abandoned farmhouse, far away from any civilization.
The farmhouse itself wasn't in such bad shape. Sure, it needed repairs here and there, but it wasn't anything a tough solider like Rex couldn't handle. He got to work pretty quick, with his handy tools and a shit ton of determination, he had refurnished and fixed the farmhouse within a year and a half, and now, all that was left was to renew the coat of paint that seemed to chip away any time it rained.
But Rex figured that could wait, after all, no one would be able to tell that the farmhouse was being used as long as it looked old and rusty, right?
With a soft sigh, he closed his eyes, basking in the warmth provided by the rays of the setting sun. He was tired. It was a long day of working on the farm, planting the appropriate crops for the upcoming, much colder, season, as well as milking the banthas to make different cheeses the next day.
He thought over his schedule, already feeling a headache rising in the back of his head. The following week he was supposed to be making his way over to the nearest town, to sell whatever he had managed to produce over the last two weeks. Going to the closest town over was his least favourite activity; he preferred to stay hidden away in his little farmhouse with his Banthas and Tooka.
He preferred to relax on his porch, to watch over his animals as they grazed happily across the long stretch of fields, to feel the warm sunrays kissing his skin, to watch the sun lazily disappear behind the horizon.
He let his tired eyes fall closed, the wrinkles on his skin seemingly fading away, a soft smile shining on his face at the soft hum of the summer breeze and grazing animals, an all too familiar weight lifting from his chest inch by inch. The gentle breeze passed his body, leaving a pleasant, cooling chill to run down his spine.
Darkness and warmth surrounded him like a weighted blanket, though his body felt light. He dreamt of nothing, his mind jumping to and from consciousness, his body twitching at a sudden shift in atmosphere. His ears almost twitched at the soft whir of a ship flying above, goose bumps rising over the expanse of his bare, muscular arms as a much stronger wind grazed past his body.
But his eyes snapped open to the sound of panicked tip-tapping of his banthas, their heaved breathing and confused whines reaching his ears. The warm honeyed glare of his eyes was gone, now replaced by a deep black as he looked around, the night sky pitch black.
He must have snoozed off or something, how many hours have passed?
The banthas continued to make noise, but this time the briefest whispers accompanied them. With a strong, heavy inhale, Rex slowly rose from his seat, eyes squinted as he tried to cover for his lack of vision.
Who were they? The Empire?
Surely not.
Rex had made sure to cover all of his tracks, remaining classed as officially dead in the Empire's files.
Did someone betray him?
But who?
And how?
Only a very small number of people actually knew-
"Hey lady! Calm it!" A familiar voice said all too loudly, giving an affectionate pat to one of the banthas. The voice, it was so.. so like Rex's.
His eyes widened as the other figures shushed the man, and Rex couldn't help the relieved smile and sigh that escaped his chest.
He knew those people. After all, they're the ones he rescued Echo with.
However, one by one, various emotions swirled around in his head. Happiness? Of course. He was happy to see his brothers after four gruelling, lonely years. Confusion? Hell yeah! What was so important that they had to break their no contact? Relief too, he could feel the way his heart rate had spiked just at the mere idea of danger, blood rushing into his head, loudly pounding against his eardrums.
Slowly, one foot moved, followed by the other, taking turns leading Rex down the porch, towards his brothers. Towards his family.
At the sight of Rex's moving figure, some men groaned, whereas Wrecker and Omega began running at full-speed towards the male, tackling him to the ground in a long awaited hug.
"Rex! We missed you!" Omega exclaimed, erupting into fits of laughter as Rex's strong arm wrapped around her and Wrecker.
"Alright alright! Now get off of me, I can feel my bones being crushed!" Rex exclaimed, though his hold on the two didn't ease, nor did his smile disappear.  Quickly scrambling off of him, the two couldn't contain their happy, yet seemingly mischievous smiles as Hunter extended a hand out to Rex.
"It's been a while, brother." Hunter nodded, pulling Rex in for a quick hug, patting his back. Hunter's body was stiff, his shoulders tense and breathing strained as he moved away, Rex noticed. That was unusual.
Though a smile remained on his face, Rex couldn't help but feel nervous at the strange tension surrounding the batch. As he looked around, one eyebrow quirked at the sight of Tech and Crosshair shielding Echo from view and.. someone else? Who were they?
"What's going on..?" He questioned, his eyes narrowing as he looked between the two.
Echo and the figure stood in the very far back, Echo's arm was wrapped tightly around their shoulders, holding them protectively close to his chest, his grip tight as if the figure would disappear into the darkness of the night if his hold let up even by an inch.
His eyes remained trained on Echo and the mysterious figure, though Rex's head tilted slightly to the right, in Hunter's direction.
"Hunter-" Rex started, but was quickly interrupted by the look on Echo's face. His ears strained, almost missing the soft, trembling whimper. The figure brought a hand up to their face, too late in stifling the sound.
As their hand lifted, Rex noticed that all-too familiar, cuffed sleeve hanging onto their hand.
Time seemed to slow, his chest straining painfully at the sound. Rex could feel his heart drop, the air sucked from his body like a popped balloon.
His sight was stuck on that sleeve, visions plaguing his mind, replaying like a broken tape.
Memories, memories of her.
That voice.
His legs moved before his mind could even comprehend what was happening. Tech and Crosshair narrowly avoided being collided into, stepping to the side as Rex pushed through.
His lips twisted into a pained frown, his teeth gritted together like metal bars.
That robe.. That Jedi robe.
How didn't he notice it right away?
The look on Echo's face told him everything he needed to know, his hold easing on her as Rex reached his arms out, gripping her shoulders tightly.
"Y/n.." Her name spilled from his lips so easily, so softly, as though he was cursed, spellbound to only repeat her name, only those few simple syllables for the rest of eternity. It lingered on his tongue like the sweetest of syrups, leaving a fiery, burning trail in his throat, scalding at his heart like a molten fist, twisting, turning and tearing.
"Rex," A shiver fell down his spine, his breath hitching in his throat. How long had it been since he last heard it? Tears brimmed at the corners of his eyes, his gut twisting into a familiar knot, adrenaline spreading like fire through his veins. His heart pumped blood so quickly, so fiercely through his body, it was like a thousand fireworks had gone off in that instant. Many people have said his name, of course, but only her voice had ever evoked such strong emotions in him.
From the way she'd command his attention during meetings, her gaze lingering a second longer than necessary, the way she'd whisper it when it was just the two of them, hiding in a faraway corner on one of the ships, or even the way it rolled off the tip of her tongue whilst-
It felt like the world around had been sucked into the background, leaving only the two of them, hearts beating wildly, minds melting over one another, even the cold night failing to gather their attention.
His hands, which had been previously on her shoulders, were now gently cradling her face, thumbs swishing back and forth in soft strokes.
His whole focus was on her eyes- oh, those starry eyes.
How many times had he dreamed of them?
How many times had he cried at night, calling out for her in broken whispers and sobs?
Rex knew it was a few times too many, and yet at the same time, it wasn't enough.
A sob left his lips as he dropped the hood off her head, revealing the person behind the shadowy figure.
Something was different. Off.
Her face, although so familiar, was now so different. Bathed in aged lines, marks, grease and dirt, and worst of all.. A scar.
He hadn't noticed it under the shadow of her hood, but now, it was ever so prominent under the blaring moonlight.
A lone tear cascaded down his face, leaving a wet, salty trail from the midpoint of his eye, down the plush softness of his cheek, dripping off the edge of his jaw. Just like her scar. He let his thumb caress the rough, broken, damaged skin, his lips twisted in a pained frown, stunned to silence.
Her hand, one that used to be so soft and so gentle, was now gripping tightly at his wrist, a gentle shadow on her cheeks, on her scar, casted by her eyelashes. When did she get it? How did she get it?
Her head twisted to the side, making the most effort to hide that side of her face from his gaze.
"Don't.." Rex whispered, no, he warned, taking a hold of her chin, forcing her to turn his way, to face him. Lowering his face to hers, his voice was strained, rough, pleading. "I want to see you.. Let me see you, mesh'la." The word spilled from his lips with such ease, like a prayer, with so much delicacy, so much practice, as he brushed his nose against hers, his eyes fluttering shut. His lips hovered just an inch above hers, feeling the warmth of her breath against his skin.
He had dreamt of this day, every night, every day. For. So. Many. Years.
He had dreamt of lifting her into his arms, of kissing her, of crying with her, of pushing her against his bed, leaning on top of her, making love to her.
For so many kriffing years.
She's alive.
"I missed you. So. Kriffing. Much." He muttered, his voice becoming more strained with each oncoming word, his eyes squeezed shut, his forehead flush against your own as he fought every fibre in his body against the awful, suffocating need to kiss you. Another pained whimper left your lips, unknowingly acting as a trigger for his next movements.
His lips crashed against your own, his hands keeping your face steady, making sure you wouldn't slip away like the hundreds, no, thousands of dreams he's had before.
Your lips were as soft as he remembered, your touch featherlight and rough. Your hands were shaking, he noted. You were afraid. Afraid of him? You wouldn't be kissing back if that was the case.
Your scent overwhelmed him, it was that faint smell of peach shampoo that he loved so much, it was making his knees weak. Where did you manage to get that from? From the state of you, he was sure you were dying for a hot, bubbly bath. Maybe it was just his imagination playing up. Kissing you, it was addicting. He was like a starved man, pushing his lips against your own, his tongue slipping past to dance with yours in a sweet Waltz, full of grief and hope and longing and all the years wasted away by your separation, by his fear of your light having been snuffed out, like a flickering flame.
You were his light in the dark, his oasis in a never-ending dessert, his midsummer night's dream. You had that spark in you - the one that attracted individuals to you like moths to light. Your laugh, so easily evoked, and your kind smiles, so easily graced upon anyone and everyone, shining down like sunshine on a dewy, autumn morning. You were a breath of fresh air, but also a crackling, comforting fire on a cold winters night.
But he had lost you just so quickly, on that day. Never knowing, for years, if you'd be back. If you were alive.
Your touch slowly grew from soft, dissipated like cotton-candy and falling snowflakes, to eager, pleading for more as your fingers found solace in his slightly outgrown blonde hair, encasing his head in your embrace, pulling him closer as you kissed feverishly, afraid he will disappear like dandelion seeds on a spring day.
You couldn't hear anything but his heartbeat, you couldn't smell anything but his scent, one that had creeped up on you and wrapped around you in an invisible embrace, the smell of freshly cut grass and smoky campfires entrapping you. You couldn't feel anything but him. His hands, always so much bigger than yours, had completely and utterly gotten control over your body, feeling and caressing your hair, gripping your chin and pulling you closer by your waist, his lips hot against your own, his breathing stuttering and yet so laboured as his teeth clashed against your own, his eyes scrunched shut - afraid you would disappear.
Being held in his arms was like a dream come true. You could spend an eternity with him, never losing your love and affection for the soldier standing before you. His warmth planted butterflies in your stomach, and his touch ignited them, making them burn wildly in your gut, scalding and yet patching over the old scars and wounds, gently embracing your heart in a healing bandage.
Only Rex could do such a thing.
Only Rex could make your heart beat faster, only Rex could have adrenaline pumping through your veins just by a featherlight touch, or a sweet, candy-like, tooth-rotting whisper, or a longing, loving gaze of his golden irises and lush eyelashes.
So lost in each other, for so long, neither the two of you broke contact, until Hunter had to clear his throat awkwardly and speak up to make the two of you slowly, unwillingly, pull apart.
Rex's forehead rested against yours, crows feet tugging at the outer corners of his eyes, his lips slightly agape as he tried to calm down the galloping of his heart.
Slowly, eventually, his eyes opened again, the familiar warm colour of honey swirling around his pupils as he gazed into your eyes, a small, pained, and yet happy smile overtaking his features. His heart melted as that same smile reflected on your face, and tears brimmed in your eyes.
"Are you guys done yet?" Crosshair's voice called from a short distance, disgust and yet somehow a hint of endearment present in it.
"You lot go ahead, we'll catch up in a minute," Rex tossed the words over his shoulder with little to no care, rolling his eyes at the loud scoff that came from Crosshair. It was quickly followed by an audible smack, an 'Ouch', and the sound of retreating footsteps.
Your shoulders shook as a breathy laugh escaped you, and as you shut your eyes once more, tears began to escape one by one, sliding down the expanse of your cheek. Rex wasted no time in bringing a hand to gently wipe away at your tears, his own tears tickling at his waterline.
He missed you so damn much.
And finally, you were here, with him, crying and smiling in his arms.
His throat felt tight, as if someone was strangling him, daring him to say anything. His chest felt heavy, and he was sure if he was stood up any longer, he would simply collapse.
His thumb caressed the soft, and yet ragged, skin on your cheek, the corners of his lips twisted into a semi-frown, his heart hurting, blood pumping loudly in his ears.
His lips opened and closed, at a loss for words, but his voice found a way to come through.
"You have n-no idea," His voice was just above a mere whisper, afraid if he were to speak any louder, you'd crumble away under his touch, or he'd wake up.
His thumb moved to trace the outline of your scar, a loving look present in the golden pool of his irises.
"You're as beautiful as the day I lost you.."

“I saw you eyeing that woman at Seventy Nines.”
Rex glances up from his datapad and flushes, rubbing the back of his neck. Fives grins down at Rex, arms crossed over his chest, one hip slightly popped.
“It was nothing,” mutters Rex, stepping around Fives’ comment.
The corner of Fives’ mouth quirks as he tries to hide a knowing smile. “Nothing? You were practically drooling,” laughs Fives, gently tossing his helmet on the bunk next to Rex’s. “Why didn’t you approach her?”
Rex blinks, confused. “Why would I?”
Fives shakes his head. “She was staring at you too, Captain. We all saw it.”
Rex looks back at the datapad, wanting to be done with this conversation. “And if I talked to her, what then?”
Fives shrugs. “You talk to a beautiful woman. Flirt a bit.” Fives leans in and Rex glances up from the datapad. “Slip into a dark corner for some—”
“That’s enough, Fives,” interjects Rex, his stomach twisting with understanding.
Fives pats Rex’s shoulder and then plops down next to Rex in the bunk. “This war is going to end. What do you plan to do after its over?”
What is he going to do? Rex hasn’t even thought about it. Hasn’t given the idea any life. Rex is a soldier of the Republic. Duty comes first. It always does. Thinking about the future when that future is entirely uncertain will only create heartache in the end.
“Haven’t thought about it,” answers Rex truthfully. Maybe Fives will drop this, and Rex can return to reading the latest war reports.
“Why not?” asks Fives, clearly not interested in moving on.
Rex’s grip on the sides of the datapad tightens.
Why not? Because fantasizing about the future in any capacity leaves Rex vulnerable and open to the realities of his situation. His family are his fellow clones. They are his brothers. All the family he needs is right here. Why would he ever need to consider anything beyond what is already in front of him?
“I don’t see the point,” answers Rex. “We don’t know when this war will end.” He pauses. “And some days we aren’t sure if we’ll even see tomorrow.”
Fives snorts. “That’s the whole reason why you should.”
“Fives—”
“We’re alive, Rex. We are people and we feel. We may serve the Republic, but we deserve to dream like the citizens we protect.” Fives reaches for his helmet and holds it reverently in his lap, the front side facing him. “In peacetime, we deserve a bit of happiness.”
Rex is silent a moment before he speaks. “Are you not happy now, Fives?”
Fives glances up and grins. “I’m happy, Rex. But happiness during peacetime is…different. I want to know what that looks like for us. Dreaming about it isn’t wrong.”
Rex didn’t say that it was wrong, but he’s not going to point that out to Fives.
Fives taps the edge of the helmet against his knee, sighing as he stands. “I’ll leave you to your boring war reports, Rex.” At the door, Fives turns, and grins mischievously. “Next time, if she’s there, you’re talking to her.”
The door to the room whooshes open, and Fives disappears into the hall. When it shuts, Rex is left in the lingering silence, the only sound that of the air filtration system. It hums softly, a dull buzz in the background.
Whenever his mind drifts toward the future—which is almost never—Rex rarely allows himself to linger. Maybe it’s because of his position, and that there are thousands counting on him to lead them. So many of his brothers look to him for guidance, even ones from other sections of GAR. He and Cody are always discussing strategies and offering advice.
Rex tries to live in the moment, to focus on what matters right now. But what Fives said is sinking in, lurking at the back of his mind, and drawing his attention away from the datapad in his hands.
This room is a small barracks area, one for captains and other ranked members of the Clone Army can go to rest. No one else is in here. It’s just him. They’re stationed on Coruscant, waiting to depart for a months long campaign. Rex and the rest of the 501st have some time to relax before returning to the battlefield.
Yes, they did go to 79’s last night. Yes, Rex may have had one too many strong drinks. And yes, Rex couldn’t stop staring at the woman giving him flirtatious glances all night.
Rex might be a clone but he’s still a man.
Locking the datapad, Rex sighs heavily, placing it on the edge of the bed. Tiredness sits in his bones, and Rex gives in to the exhaustion, bringing his legs onto the bunk and laying on his back. He stares at the bunk above him, at the smooth, plain metal, and tries his best to forget everything.
Tries is the key word.
Rex does try, but he cannot stop thinking about Fives and what he said.
He slips unexpectedly, falling into that space, considering the future.
The woman Rex pictures in his mind is faceless. He does not consider her features, or what her hair might be like. He does not consider whether this fictional woman is human or Twi’lek or any other species. Instead, Rex contemplates what he needs in someone else. Would she be soft and kind, someone to smooth out his sharp edges, to help him forget the realities of war, and linger in a calmness that soothes his soul? Or is she sharp witted, adventurous, willing to explore the galaxy and isn’t afraid of danger?
Or is she something else entirely?
Rex floats in the possibilities, of what this woman might be like and what she’d mean to him. Would General Skywalker want to meet her? Would he approve? Is it even allowed to him after the war ends? Will the clones have the right to enjoy the things the citizens of the Republic do?
These questions form in his head quickly but evaporate just as fast. Rex imagines warm arms around him, of knowing that there is always someone waiting for him, to share in all his failures and successes. It is a wonderful sensation, a calming sense of peace that ushers into his head and curls itself around him to take hold.
The physical isn’t entirely important to Rex, but he considers it anyway. He conjures up multiple images, giving the faceless woman hair then lekku then hair again, even picturing the woman he couldn’t stop glancing at while at 79’s. These thoughts bring the woman in his head to life a bit more, as if he’s stoking a fire, protecting the flame from extinguishing.
With his eyes closed, Rex imagines soft hands holding his, moving to his wrists and arms to eventually cradle his cheek. Rex sighs audibly, pretending that there is someone next to him in this bed, curled up against his side with their head on his chest.
But when he reaches across his chest to seek this someone out, his fingers only find empty air.
Rex’s eyelids slowly open, and a heaviness fills his chest. This is why Rex does not entertain thoughts of the future. This is why he lives in the present moment and focuses on the immediate needs of his soldiers and the Republic.
It’s self-indulgent. Unnecessary. That is what Rex tells himself as he turns on his side and tries to find some sleepful peace in the dark.
These streets are a maze, and Rex is utterly lost.
His personal communicator is crushed, and there are slavers on his trail. General Skywalker has no idea that Rex is being pursued. He has no idea that Rex took a blaster shot to the leg or that he’s limping along as he attempts to hide from his assailants.
This is supposed to be an undercover job, a way to figure out where an entire village full of Twi’leks were taken to after disappearing. While General Skywalker pretends to be a slaver interested in buying, Rex’s job is to find another way into where the Twi’leks are being held.
The whole thing fell apart. Crashed. Burnt up like an asteroid entering the atmosphere.
Behind him, his pursuers shout, and people scream. They’re closer than before, and Rex needs to find shelter. He needs to throw them off and return to General Skywalker.
He slips in a puddle, nearly stumbling into a pile of trash.
“Kriffing hell,” mutters Rex, staggering, placing one hand against the side of a building to balance himself.
His chest heaves and his leg is screaming, needing to rest.
Their pounding footsteps grow closer, and Rex takes off, dragging his leg along as he turns the corner. It’s shadowy here, and the street is long and narrow. There is nothing for him to hide in or around. The street is lined with residential buildings. There are entry doors and a few windows on the bottom level, but that won’t give him protection.
Desperation sinks in. Rex tries a few of the nearby doors, receiving no response.
There is a shout from the direction of where Rex just came from. “This way!”
Rex growls with frustration. He turns away from the door of one house, only to freeze when he notices the young woman in an open doorway.
“In here. Quickly.”
Rex glances back once and considers the alternative.
Kriff it, he thinks, entering the dimly lit home, the door whooshing shut behind him. Rex’s leg almost gives out beneath him, a sharp pain shooting up his side. He grunts, starts to double over, and his potential savior comes to him, placing their hands upon him gently.
Realizing that there is another person, Rex glances up quickly, the instinct to survive flaring white and hot and bright.
He finds…you.
And it is not what he expects. Because—no. Rex smothers the thought immediately.
There is a shout right outside the door, and you place a firm hand on Rex’s chest, easing him down toward the floor while holding a single finger up for silence. Rex doesn’t say a word, his gaze flicking between you and the door, and back again.
The voices soften, and then Rex doesn’t hear them at all.
When you sigh with relief, Rex relaxes a bit, knowing that he’s been spared some extra time.
But you? You are a mystery to him. Friend? Or foe?
“You’re hurt.” It’s not a question and Rex immediately likes the sound of your voice. “Heard the shouts,” you continue. “Saw you limping.”
Rex swallows. “Why are you helping me?”
Your smile is soft with a hint of mischievousness. “Do you think I like living amongst slavers?”
Rex shrugs. “Wasn’t really on my mind,” he admits.
“That’s fair,” you laugh. “They rarely treat the people who live here much different from the people they sell. I don’t mind disrupting things for them when I can.”
Friend, then.
Rex can work with that.
You glance down at his leg and frown. Your hand hovers just above the spot where the blaster bolt struck his thigh. Rex grimaces as the pain flares anew, like it knows he’s finally safe and demands immediate treatment.
“Can you stand on it?” you ask gently, placing one hand on Rex’s shoulder. Your palm is warm and a flood of comfort bursts inside him like a dam breaking.
What is it about you that’s different? Why does his body respond to you like he’s safe when his brain can’t seem to make the same connection?
Rex knows but stifles the thought again.
“Was running on it,” jokes Rex, trying to make light of that fact that the pain is a throbbing thing that won’t cease.
The smile you give him is so tooth-rottenly sweet that Rex feels heat warming his cheeks.
“Humor. That’s good.” You lean in a bit and Rex is immediately flustered by your closeness. “Means you’ll live.”
You present your hands, palms upward. They look so soft, so inviting, and Rex accepts. You help him to a fully seated position before sliding an arm around his waist to assist him to his feet. Rex drapes an arm over the back of your shoulders as the two of you hobble along.
You lead Rex into a small bedroom. The bed itself is unmade; the sheets tossed around like you’ve slipped out just to come to his rescue. For some reason, Rex pictures this happening, and then quickly dismisses it.
Easing onto the bed is hell, and Rex winces as you help him to his back. Thankfully, Rex isn’t wearing his armor, which will make tending to the wound much easier.
“May I take a look?”
Rex nods and you seat yourself next to him on the edge of the bed. When your hands touch his thigh, a shiver runs through him like an electrical current. You hum softly as you lightly press around the spot of the burn. Rex tries to stay calm, but in this prone position, Rex is only focused on your face.
He learns the line and curves, all your small tells, and the subtle way you tilt your head as you observe him. On Kamino—on any Republic vessel really—most of the medical care is run by droids, Kaminoans, and clones. It is mainly automated. Impersonal.
This isn’t.
You’re so close and delicate, taking so much care with him that Rex is void of words, only wanting you to keep giving him this attention. That memory, the one where he imagined what he wants creeps up unexpectedly, choking him.
Is this the feeling that Fives talked about? Is this the pull, the tug of what it means to try and find happiness outside of just duty to the Republic? Or is Rex only indulging himself while in the hands of a stranger?
“I have some bacta spray and bandages. I’ll be back in a moment.” When you stand, a momentary wave of panic grips Rex out of nowhere, stunning him.
What the kriffing hell is going on with him?
You’re back within a minute, placing the small box next to you as you return to your previous spot on the bed. Rex is instantly calm, relaxing as you consider where you want to begin.
“Could—” you pause. “It would be easier if the pants weren’t in the way. I can cut them or—”
“It’s fine,” replies Rex. “I can…remove them.”
Your eyes widen. “No. I didn’t mean—”
“Oh—”
“But if you want—”
“It’s—”
“I can cut it.”
“Yes,” nods Rex, relieved. “Yes.” Rex could start a fire with how hot his cheeks are.
With delicate fingers, you slowly cut away a perfect rectangle in his pants where the blaster burn is. Placing the cutters aside, you remove the bacta spray from the box.
“It’ll be cold.”
“I know,” answers Rex quickly.
Your eyebrows rise toward your hairline. “Is it normal for you to be hit by blaster fire?”
Kriff me.
“It’s a hazard of the job,” says Rex slowly.
Your lips part like you’re about to say something and then think better of it. “I won’t ask.” Your smile speaks to quiet amusement, and it feels like this one look is only for him. That this is something the two of you are sharing. That no one else is allowed to see inside.
The hiss of the bottle fills the room, and Rex momentarily flinches as the bacta spray hits his burn. Once done, you withdraw a gauze pad. With the other hand, you gently reach for Rex, lifting his own hand.
“Hold this for me,” you murmur, and the sound of your voice is so soft that Rex cannot resist your command.
Rex does as you ask, keeping the gauze pad pressed to the covered blaster burn. You unspool some bandages, and then begin wrapping his leg. You do not go over the pants. Instead, you slide your hand into the opening you created, guiding the end of the bandages underneath to the other side of his thigh.
It all feels too intimate, and Rex can’t help but linger on how close your hand is to something else.
“You can move your hand now.”
“Right,” mutters Rex, blinking quickly, trying to stare at the ceiling but failing completely.
Your subdued giggle draws his attention back to your face. Tying off the bandages, Rex mourns the loss of your hands when you draw away.
“All done.” You grin, and Rex melts. “I’ll grab you water and something to eat. We can talk after. Figure out a plan.”
We, as if it’s completely natural for you to help him, a stranger.
You bring him water first, and then go back to the small cooking unit, digging around for a pan to cook with while also grabbing ingredients. You shouldn’t do this for him, and yet you are. Rex’s military training tells him to be on guard, to be weary of you even if you’re showing him kindness. But that doesn’t sit right with him. Questioning your motivations taste wrong on his tongue, like he’s the bad person in this situation.
Watching you there next to the cooking unit, tending to him, it draws forth those memories again. Everything about this is too…domestic. Him reclining in bed as someone takes care of him for once is such a foreign thing. Odd. Almost forbidden.
He drifts, allows his mind to daydream of what a life like this could be like. With him, at rest for once, and someone close to him, wanting to do things for him just because they desire to do so.
But Rex doesn’t just think of someone. He thinks of you, and he sinks further and further into the daydream until the Republic, the war, and everything else in his life is a distant point in the galaxy.
But Rex needs to find General Skywalker. And you are a distraction. Healing is important but contacting Skywalker is even more urgent.
The meal you bring him is hot and so kriffing fresh that Rex nearly moans with pleasure. He could get used to this.
“Is it too intrusive to ask why you were running?” you ask, clasped hands resting in your lap. You’re sitting in the same spot on the edge of the bed, not opting to grab a chair or to sit anywhere else.
“I was poking around where I shouldn’t. Got caught.” Rex takes another bite and it’s better than the last.
“Are you alone? Or is there someone I can try to contact for you?” You shrug. “Don’t think it’s a good idea to turn you loose in the streets.”
“No,” laughs Rex. “Bad idea.” Your slightly embarrassed smile pleases him. While Rex ponders that, he also realizes he doesn’t know your name. “Here I am eating your food and sleeping in your bed. And I didn’t ask you your name.”
You give it without question and ask him the same. Rex considers whether or not he should tell you his real name or the fake one General Skywalker gave him for the job.
“It’s Rex,” he finally answers.
“Rex,” you say, as if rolling it around on your tongue, considering it and him, almost testing it out. Rex likes the way you say it. There is a soft sigh in the way you breathe his name. “Rex.”
“Just Rex.”
“Okay, Just Rex.”
He nearly chokes with laugher on the next bite of food. Once he clears his throat, Rex decides to be as honest as he can. “I’m traveling with someone. I need to find them.”
“I’ll go,” you say. “You shouldn’t leave.” Even though you’re staring at him, you still reach out and place a hand on his knee. You don’t break eye contact, and the earnestness is startling.
Rex gives you General Skywalker’s fake name and where you might find him. “It might be dangerous,” he says, trying to iterate the severity of the situation.
You squeeze his knee with a smile and stand, going to the closet to dig around. When you turn around, you hold up a large blaster. “I can handle myself.”
Using the strap, you secure it over your chest, the blaster hanging to the side. “I’ll be back. Don’t open the door for anyone.” You give him a little salute and Rex watches you leave through the front door.
The healing agent in the bacta spray and the need for rest creeps up. When the food is gone, Rex places the bowl to the side, slipping back into the daydream.
“Sleeping, Rex?”
Rex nearly launches himself off the bed. “General Skywalker,” he breathes, relief flooding his chest.
In the small doorway, you stand quietly, hands clasped tightly in front of your chest. You found him and even brought Skywalker with you.
He stops next to the side of the bed. “Glad you’re okay.”
Rex shrugs. “You would have come for me eventually.”
General Skywalker grins and nods his head. “That I would, Rex. I don’t like leaving my men behind. Especially you.” He glances at you standing in the doorway, and then turns back to Rex, one eyebrow arching in question. Rex nods, acknowledging Skywalker’s silent ask.
He exhales and approaches you. “Thank you. For taking care of my friend.” General Skywalker’s inclines his head in your direction.
“Of course. It’s nothing. Really.”
Skywalker holds out his hand and Rex clasps it. He drags Rex up to a seated position. “How’s the leg?”
“It’ll heal,” answers Rex. It’s already feeling better with the bacta spray on it.
“Can you walk?”
Rex stands. Wobbles. Remains upright. “I can manage, General.”
Skywalker glances at Rex’s torn pants. “We need to fix that.” He starts to remove his outer cloak and Rex shakes his head. “Don’t question it, Rex.”
Rex reluctantly grabs the cloak from General Skywalker and wraps it around himself, hiding the blaster burn. You step out of the way of the door to allow them exit. Rex’s glances at you and your lips turn upward.
At the door, Rex pauses, wanting to stay just a few minutes longer. “Thank you,” he says softly.
“Just avoid blaster bolts. If you can. For me.”
The back of Rex’s neck heats up and he exits the small house with a nod of his head. When the door whooshes shut, General Skywalker’s muted grin turns devilish.
“What?” asks Rex, flustered.
“You like her,” says Skywalker.
“I—I don’t.” Rex straightens his shoulders. “Why do you think that?”
General Skywalker taps the side of his head with one finger. “Jedi.”
“Sir. That explains nothing.”
“The feeling is mutual, Rex,” calls Skywalker over his shoulder as he starts walking down the street.
Rex nearly trips. “What’s mutual?” he asks, already knowing what his general means but not wanting to admit it to himself. General Skywalker gestures in the direction of your home. “No,” blurts Rex. “That’s not true.”
General Skywalker’s knowing grin is enough to silence him.
“You’ll see her again, Rex. I have a good feeling about it.”
“You’re doing a good thing, Rex. Even if you can’t always see it.” Your fingers slide over his jaw to gently cup his cheek. Rex leans into the touch, sighing heavily. “Saving one is an accomplishment, and you have rescued so many.”
After the Republic fell, and Rex and Ahsoka parted ways, he came to find you, only to bring you along with him on his journey to save his brothers’. You’re not on the frontlines, standing by his side in Imperial complexes, executing daring rescues. Rex wouldn’t allow that of you even if you insisted. You’re good with a blaster but you’re no soldier and losing you might shatter him.
Instead, you stay on Coruscant, awaiting each of his returns, ready to take care of, and look after, any clones Rex brings back with him. You never complain. Never waiver. You are his rock, a home for him to find a bit of peace from the unending injustices of the galaxy.
With your hand upon his cheek, you lean into him, resting your forehead against the side of his temple. “You’re a good man, Rex. I know that you know that.”
Rex’s fingers intertwine with yours. Bringing your hand up to his face, he gently kisses every knuckle and each finger. Sighing, you press lightly on his cheek, guiding Rex’s face in your direction. There is no brief pause or wanton hesitation. Rex knows where he stands with you, and his lips meet with your own in perfect satisfaction.
The future he dreamed of is here, with you, while rescuing his brothers.
The Empire is vast. It is powerful. But he is not alone. And that, the shared experience of companionship, is a hope in the face of a looming darkness.

Rex had once believed that the end of the war would mean an end to the fighting, an end to losing his brothers, and an end to the never-ending number of problems he had to deal with on a daily basis. How wrong he had been. Sometimes, when he lay awake at night, staring up at the ceiling he couldn’t quite believe how things had ended. His heart ached when he thought about it too much, the faces of all of his brothers flashing across his mind. Visions of the smoke from the Venator as it lay crumbled against the earth haunted him in his dreams. Jesse, Kix, Cody, General's Skywalker and Kenobi, all gone. Lost to the Empire. But worst of all were the thoughts of how meaningless his life had actually been. He hadn’t been a soldier, he'd simply been a pawn in someone else's game. That was what kept him up most at night. And it was that thought that continued to drive him to help his brothers, to fight back against The Empire in any way that he could.
It was what currently had him stalking through one of the mid-levels of Coruscant as the sun began to dip into the evening. It wasn’t as risky as being up on one of the upper levels where the Coruscant Guard routinely patrolled but still close enough to the surface to put him on edge. But desperate times called for desperate measures.
He kept his head down as he went, he had left his armour back at base so he knew most people wouldn’t give him a second look but months of hiding had made him extra cautious. He slowed as his destination came into view, his head swivelled a few times, checking to make sure he wasn’t being tailed before he headed over to the garage across the street. It was a small garage but well kept, the lights inside still shone brightly out into the street as he neared the door. He knew it would likely be closing shortly so he would have to make this quick.
A bell chimed as he stepped through the door, a quick scan of the shop revealed the front was empty at first but he heard movement in the back almost instantly.
Rex released a breath he didn’t even realize he had been holding as your figure stepped out of the back and behind the counter. His heart was suddenly beating in his chest wildly at the sight of you. There had been very few days since the end of the war where he hadn’t thought about you, hadn’t worried about what might have happened to you. He had thought he would never see you again but now that he was every confusing feeling he had harboured for you for years was slamming back into him.
“Hey there, how can I…” You started before you slammed to a halt, your entire body freezing and your eyes widening as you took in the sight of him.
“Hi,” He greeted sheepishly, waving at you when the feeling of needing to do something with his hands overwhelmed him.
“Rex…” Your voice was barely above a whisper as you stared at him.
Before he could even think of what to say next you had launched yourself over the counter in a blur of movement, throwing yourself into him and crushing him a hug.
He chuckled nervously as his hands wrapped around you instinctively. He tried his best to ignore the heat that was suddenly pooling in him at the feeling of your body being so tightly pressed up against him. He’d always had armour on to protect him in the past anytime this had happened.
You pulled away from him after a moment but your hands stayed gripping his biceps, as though you were worried he was about to slip away again. Your face was paler than normal as you looked up at him with wide eyes, “I heard that you went down with the ship, they said you were dead. I-I thought you were dead, Rex.”
He chuckled darkly as he reached up to rub at the back of his neck nervously, “Well, only one of those things is true, clearly.”
His words seemed to break the tension in the room and you chuckled softly, a grin finally splitting your face as you let your hands fall away from him. He found himself mourning the loss of your touch but he tried his best to push that thought aside. He was here on a mission after all, and not one of a personal nature.
“Gosh, I can’t believe you’re really here,” You said with a breathy laugh, “I missed you.”
Your admission did something funny to his insides but again he tried his best to ignore the feeling, “It’s harder to get rid of me than one might expect.”
You laughed, “Clearly, but I’m glad for it.”
The two of you simply stared at one another for a long moment. Rex could hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears as he looked at you. You didn't look any different than the last time he had seen you, you were still so kriffing beautiful. He watched as your brow furrowed slightly as your own eyes finished their appraisal of him.
“What are you doing here Rex?” You asked, “You - you don’t look like you’re with The Empire,” You said the second part hesitantly, as though you were afraid to hear his answer.
“I’m not, I’ve uh - defected,” He answered, for lack of a better term. The fact that he was listed as KIA sort of negates the term but it’s close enough to the truth, “Are you still…” he started though he was somewhat unsure of how to ask the question.
You had once been, in his opinion, the finest civilian mechanic the GAR had under contract. Rex had met you only days after the first battle of Geonosis, back when you had both still been shiny. He had taken an instant liking to your quick wit and easygoing nature, plus no one could fix a ship as efficiently as you could. The two of you had remained friends throughout the war. You had often been stationed on Coruscant at the main base but there had been many occasions when you had accompanied the 501st on their missions. Those times had been his favourite and if he had made extra trips to the flight deck during those missions it had been completely coincidental, or so he told himself.
You shook your head, “No, after everything that happened, the Jedi, the clones, being told that you had been killed…” You trailed off momentarily, biting your lip before you looked back up at him, “I saw what was happening and it became pretty clear pretty quickly that it was not something I wanted to be a part of any longer. My dad was ecstatic to have me back in the garage though.”
The two of you were silent for another long moment, simply looking at one another. Rex hadn’t thought it would be possible but his respect for you only grew at the knowledge that you had left The Empire, seeing it for what it truly was.
“Do you know what happened to the others?” You asked hesitantly after a moment, “Jesse? Kix? Echo? Cody?” The list could have gone on and on, you had been friends with many of the boys.
His heart wrenched at the thought of his brothers, he didn’t know if he had it in him to tell you the truth. Jesse who had died trying to kill him and Ahsoka, his actions not his own. Kix, who had vanished only weeks before the end of the war never to be seen again. Cody, who was still with The Empire or worse. He settled on simply shaking his head instead, the answer was too complex and he knew you would get his meaning.
Overwhelming sadness flashed in your eyes and he instantly hated the fact that he had been the one to put it there. He tracked your movements as you reached out to rest a hand on his arm comfortingly, “I’m so sorry, Rex.”
Rex simply shook his head, he had quickly learned that there really were no words to convey his feelings about all that he had lost.
Sensing his discomfort you quickly changed course, which he was very appreciative of, “So, what are you up to now then?”
“Uh…” He faltered. He trusted you, he did, he always had. But it wasn’t just his life that would be in danger if word were to get out what he was up to. Not only that, but he couldn’t bear the thought of putting you in danger by roping you into things more than his being here already had. He cursed himself internally for having not come up with a better answer to this inevitable question.
Your eyebrow raised but instead of suspicion there was only amusement dancing in your eyes, “Let me guess, it’s classified?”
He felt his face flush slightly but he was relieved by your response, “Sorry, it’s not just me who would be at risk if something were to happen.”
“Say less, Captain,” You replied with a laugh, patting his arm reassuringly, “But what brings you to me?”
“I’m looking for a specific part for a ship. I was hoping you might be able to help me out,” Rex replied. The Remora had taken a direct hit on their last mission. Echo had done his best to try and repair it but a part of the stabilization system had been beyond his ability to fix and without it they were effectively grounded. The Martez sisters had done their best to find the part but hadn’t yet had any luck and Rex was beginning to grow desperate. The longer they were grounded the fewer brothers they were likely to save. Echo had suggested simply stealing a new ship but Rex hadn’t wanted to draw that much attention to them. At least not until they had no other option.
“Sure thing,” You replied happily before you turned and headed back towards the counter, “What are you looking for?”
He followed after you as you slipped behind the counter. You disappeared momentarily as you bent down behind the counter before you re-emerged with your data pad in hand. He gave you the specifics of the part, his fingers drumming anxiously against the countertop as he watched you scroll on your data pad.
“I don’t have anything in stock right now,” You replied with a soft frown, “But I should be able to get it with no problem. It might just take a few days to have it shipped from a warehouse.”
This was exactly why you were his favourite, “Really? That’s great. What will I owe you?” Thanks to Senator Chuchi's support paying for the part wasn’t an issue.
You shook your head before giving him a cheeky grin, “Don’t worry about it Rex, you get the friends and family discount.”
“I can’t…” He protested but was cut short.
“Ah ah,” You said, waving your hand at him dismissively, “None of that. Besides, a dead man’s credits won’t really do me any good,” You teased as you set your data pad aside and leaned your elbows on the counter, propping your chin up on your hands as you looked up at him.
He wanted to protest further but he had learned years ago that arguing with you once your mind was set got him absolutely nowhere, “Thank you,” He said sincerely. You really were his favourite.
You smiled brightly at him, “No problem Rex. How should I get ahold of you once the part comes in?”
He reached out to grab a stylus and piece of flimsy from off the counter, “Here’s my private comm channel, just give me a call and I’ll come and grab it,” He paused momentarily, considering, “This is Echo’s. If you can’t get ahold of me, try him,” With his line of work he never really knew which day could end up being his last. He knew that if something were to happen to him his brother would continue on with their mission without a doubt.
“Echo’s with you?” You asked, perking up as you took the flimsy from him. The last time you had seen Echo he had still been with The Bad Batch.
He nodded, “It’s a long story.”
You laughed, “Classified?”
Rex chuckled softly, “No, just long.”
“Well, maybe you can tell it to me when I get that part in,” You replied with another soft smile that made his face flush.
He simply nodded, trying his best to ignore the heat that was once again pooling in his stomach at the mere sight of you, “I think I can manage that.”
“Good, I’ll see you later then Captain,” And before he even fully knew what was happening you had leaned over the counter, stretching up onto the tips of your toes to plant a swift kiss on his cheek.
“I’ll uh, yah, later. I’ll be seeing you, then. Later.” He stammered as absolute fire burned in his face. He could still feel the weight of our lips against his cheek as he stepped away from the counter. Your eyes were sparkling with amusement as you watched him make his hasty retreat which only made the feelings churning inside him even worse. He spun around and marched towards the door, determined to get out before he did something else embarrassing.
“Rex,” You called after him just as he reached the threshold, causing him to pause and spin back in your direction, “I’m really glad to see you. I’m very happy you’re not dead.”
He couldn’t manage more than a nod, his brain apparently having left him completely. With a final wave, he stepped out into the cool night air of Coruscant, breath filling his lungs once more as he made his way back towards base. You might be his favourite, but he wasn’t entirely convinced that you weren’t going to be the death of him.
*******
Just as they had during the war, the days blurred together for Rex. There was always something that needed doing, intel to collect, supply runs, people to meet. His to-do list was endless. He let out a deep sigh, his attention still focused on his data pad as he walked back into the Martez sister's garage, their temporary base. He had just finished meeting with Senator Chuchi and while their meetings always went well, the woman was unwaveringly kind and supportive, he was tired. He wanted nothing more than to collapse on his makeshift bunk in the back and stay there for the rest of the day. But as always, duty called, and he would answer.
He lifted a hand in greeting as he strode past Howzer and Nemec, the motion almost automatic as his eyes remained glued to the data that he was currently scrolling through on his datapad.
He stopped short suddenly though as the sound of familiar laughter reached his ears. His head snapped up and his gaze instantly zeroed in on the source. For a moment he thought he was dreaming because you couldn’t possibly be standing in his base, laughing with his brother as the two of you were huddled under the hull of The Remora.
As if sensing his presence your head turned towards him and you gave him a cheerful wave, “Hiya Rex!”
He frowned, so much for keeping you safe and out of the loop. He turned his narrowed gaze towards Echo who was looking suddenly sheepish from where he was kneeling by your side. They would be having words later.
With a sigh, Rex walked over towards you, his data pad long forgotten as he focused on where you were clearly working on the ship. The answer was obvious but he asked the question anyway, “What are you doing here?”
“The part came,” You chirped, still smiling brightly up at him, “I tried to call you but couldn’t reach you so I comm’d Echo. He told me to bring the part down and then I figured I might as well give him some help with the repairs.”
Rex cursed softly as he looked at his comm, sure enough, he had a missed call. Likely from when he had been in his meeting with the Senator and had silenced the device.
“She is the expert after all,” Echo said, his pale eyes brimming with amusement as he looked between you and Rex. It only made Rex frown more.
Rex steadily ignored his brother, turning his attention back to you instead, “How are the repairs coming?”
“All done actually,” You replied, “Just closing her up, and then she’ll be good to go!”
“I’ll uh, let you two discuss logistics while I go start her up,” Echo said as he stood. You gave Echo a nod and a brief smile before you turned your attention back to tightening the last of the bolts. He patted Rex on the shoulder as he passed him, a grin on his face that Rex did not like the look of. Sometimes, with everything Echo had been through and all of the changes he had undergone, Rex forgot that Echo still had the ability to be a little shit when he wanted to be. The relationship between the two of you, even though Rex had insisted it was completely professional, had not been a secret to the boys in the 501st.
Rex stood silently as you finished up the repairs, unable to pull his eyes away from you as you went about putting your tools away. A sharp intake of breath escaped him as you paused to pull your hair back from your face, piling it onto your head and pining it quickly in place. His eyes traced the curve of your neck as heat pooled his stomach.
Likely sensing his gaze you looked towards him as you stood up, your eyebrows raised questioningly as amusement swum in your eyes.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” You asked with a soft chuckle, a wide grin on your face as you clipped a wrench back onto your tool belt.
Rex felt like his brain was malfunctioning, his face flushed as you smiled brightly at him. There was a gleam in your eyes that set his heart pounding against his rib cage. He hadn’t meant to stare, he just couldn’t stop himself it seemed. Whenever you were around it was as if nothing else existed for him. It had always been like that, but apparently, he had used to be better at hiding it.
Because you’re beautiful was the first coherent thought that came to mind. It was only after he noticed your eyes widen and your grin become absolutely beaming that he realized he had actually said that out loud.
“Well, thank you, Captain, that’s very kind of you to say,” your cheeks flushed just ever so slightly while he stood there like an absolute di’kut hoping a pit would open beneath him and swallow him whole. It was too late to take it back now though. Not that he ever would take it back. He truly meant it so he couldn’t reverse course now without coming across as intentionally cruel.
“I-“ he started then stopped, completely at a loss for words as his face burned with embarrassment. This was all Echo’s fault, somehow.
“Is that a conclusion that you’ve just recently come to? Because you sound somewhat surprised,” You teased which only made him flush further.
If he had been floundering before it was nothing compared to what he was doing now, “No...no...I...what?”
You let out a bright laugh, stepping closer to him and resting a gentle hand on his arm. He was once again glad to be back in his armour because even through it he could feel the heat of your touch.
“I’m just teasing you Rex,” You replied with another laugh, smiling up at him.
He still didn’t know what to say so instead he simply nodded. His attention was still focused entirely on you as you suddenly stood on your tip toes, the whisper of your voice against his ear sent a shiver down his spine, “I'll let you in on a little secret though. I’ve always thought you were beautiful too.”
With another gentle laugh, you pulled away from him, patting him on the arm once more before you move away. Leaving him standing there, completely dumbfounded as you waved up at Echo in the cockpit, giving him the all-clear to start up the ship.
The Remora rumbled to life, engines running smoothly once more. He continued to watch, clearly incapable of focusing on anything else, as you gave Echo a thumbs up before returning to his side once more. You looked up at him, a warm and somewhat expecting look on your face. After years of knowing you and being on the receiving end of that look many times before he knew exactly what was coming next.
“So,” You started, “Echo gave me the run down of what you’ve got going on here. I want to help you, in any way possible.”
Rex felt himself tense up, “It’s dangerous. I can’t ask you to put yourself in harm's way for us. If The Empire…”
You cut him off, “The Empire can stuff it for all I care, Rex. I want to help you. What you’re doing here is important. I might not be a soldier but I know I can still help you.”
“If something happened to you…” He started, his insides freezing at just the thought alone. If anything ever happened to you on his watch he didn’t know how he would live with himself. He had already lost so much. But he knew from the determined look in your eyes that he was fighting a losing battle.
You stopped him again, this time with your hand as you reached out to grab his own. It had the intended effect, shutting him up completely as his gaze flicked between your face and your joint hands.
“It’s worth the risk, Rex,” you said as you gave his hand a reassuring squeeze, “Please, let me help.”
He let out a weary sigh, “Alright," He might be clueless about a lot of things when it came to you but he knew when to admit defeat.
You smiled up at him brightly, fingers still interlaced with his own, “Thank you. It looks like you're stuck with me after all Captain,” Rex couldn’t help but smile at the comment. It was a throwback to better days when you used to gripe about always being assigned to the 501st for missions. You still weren't aware that he had been the one specifically requesting for your assignments.
"There are far worse problems to have,” he teased softly, “and just Rex is fine. I’m really not a Captain anymore.”
“Old habits die hard, Rex,” you replied with a shrug, “I should head back to the garage though. I’ll swing back around later though and we can discuss logistics.”
Rex nodded, though he was suddenly very aware that you were still holding his hand. Noticing his gaze you smiled up at him and for the second time that week you were moving before he could make sense of it. Your lips were soft against his cheek, the feeling of them once again setting his insides on fire and making his pulse race beneath your skin. Too soon in his opinion, you pulled away from him. He watched you walk away, his eyes never leaving you as you left the garage. You gave him one final wave that he returned before you disappeared from sight. He could still feel the ghost of your lips against his skin as he stood there, completely lost in thought.
“So…” Rex didn’t even need to turn to know that Echo was suddenly standing beside him.
“Don’t even start,” Rex grumbled, turning towards him and levelling a glare at him, “You and I are going to have to have a talk about maintaining secrecy.”
“Sir yessir,” Echo chuckled, knowing Rex’s words were all bluster. He gave him a mock salute with his scomp before he wandered off, leaving Rex alone with his thoughts. He really should move, he had a lot of work to do but he had the feeling he wasn't going to be very effective for the rest of the day. Not unless he could convince himself that he wasn’t actively counting down the hours until he would see you again.

I don‘t know if your Requests are open, but if they are could you write one where the Reader is a Jedi and traveling with the Bad Batch and when they meet Rex in the Bar she finally reunites with him and the Bad Batch just being so confused that a Jedi and Clone were in a relationship while the Republic was still there.🤗
That Familiar Feeling
word count: 3.4k
tags: vague mentions of dealing with grief and order 66, self-doubt, crying, many happy kisses
~and before anyone points it out, lemme just say this doesn't exactly match the scene of Rex reuniting with the Batch (for obvious reasons and because I forgot little details which is annoying me lol)~
Tumblr media
Something’s… off.
Entering Cid’s Parlour, the feeling of the force overwhelms you. It’s as if someone has thrown cold water over you, the force welcoming you with an eerie friendliness. It makes you falter, stopping abruptly as the sensation ambushes you.
“Oof-” Echo walks straight into you, bumping against your shoulder. He takes a step to the side, his surprised expression quickly becoming one of concern “You ok? What is it?”.
“I… I’m not sure,” you answer honestly, before trying to ease his worry “It’s probably nothing, I’ll be fine in a few minutes”.
Echo isn’t convinced but he gives you a nod, not wanting to pry. “If you’re sure…” giving you a swift once over to make sure you didn’t get injured on the mission, he carries on.
It’s been a while since you last connected with the force, becoming hesitant to reach out ever since it happened. You tried in the initial days after the order was given but the overwhelming pain and grief that greeted you each time made you pull away.
It’s not something you could deal with then and it’s not something you can deal with now, the wounds still fresh in your mind.
But this is a different feeling. It’s the force you used to know, something that worked with you and not against. It’s familiar… and that puts you on edge.
With this familiarity brings a fear of the unknown. When you worked hand in hand with the force, you could have located what’s causing this in a matter of seconds… but nowadays, where you go from week to week without reaching out to the force, it’s much harder, with the subtle shift in atmosphere being your only warning that something is different.
Your eyes scan the parlour, though there’s nothing out of the ordinary. The usual crowd is here, drinking their problems away and playing Dejarik.
Unfortunately, the Batch has gotten back later than expected, so the limited sunlight that graces Cid’s parlour during the day has vanished. Now, you can only rely on the frustratingly dim lights to help your investigation.
“C’mon, this way,” Cid cuts off your search, walking past you as she gestures to her office. Everyone begins to follow her, though you’re more reluctant.
Hunter catches your eye and you know he can sense it too but through a different method. Exchanging uneasy looks, you both make a silent agreement to stay on high alert before trailing after Cid and into her office.
Thankfully Cid isn’t in the mood for nonsense (when is she?) and so she gets straight into business. You stay quiet during the debrief of the mission and the accompanied discussion of payment, your mind elsewhere.
Although the feeling isn’t as strong in here, it’s still undoubtedly nearby, invading your every thought. Even when Cid’s focus turns to you, the feeling’s hold on you doesn’t fade.
“What’s her problem?” her voice is faint, as if she’s far off in the distance.
You don’t react. While this feeling is certainly daunting, a part of you is scared that if you push it away, this sliver of familiarity will slip through your fingers and disappear forever.
More talking ensues, though it’s more like mumbling to you, and you presume Cid has brushed past your reserved demeanour.
The harder you focus on the force, the quieter their voices become. Closing your eyes to further centre yourself, the feeling slowly becomes intelligible. You’re so close to uncovering what is causing this when it happens.
The sound of blaster fire is so sudden, you accidentally let go of the feeling, your body tensing at the noise. Your eyes dart open and for a split second, everyone freezes, the realisation of conflict sinking in before military training quickly takes over.
You reach down, instinctively going to grab your lightsaber but instead find a blaster in its place. Turns out, carrying a lightsaber in a galaxy where Jedi are seen as traitors isn’t the best idea.
Hunter takes the lead, charging out of the office and into the main area. Cid keeps up his pace, ready to defend her business with everything she’s got. You’re next in line, alongside Echo. Tech and Wrecker are the last out, both keeping Omega close.
As the other patrons scurry out, a hooded figure stands by one of the tables. Placing their blaster down on the metal surface, their armour immediately catches your attention. You almost didn’t notice the colour painted on to the plastoid, the dim lights distorting the shade of blue.
It can’t be. Surely not.
As much as your brain wants to rationalise it as being someone else, the instantly recognisable blue of the 501st is hard to deny. Before the figure pulls down their hood, the feeling finally reveals itself to you.
This familiar feeling is not one to fear. It is not the grief of losing one’s you admittedly became attached to or the terror of how the war ended but instead, it’s the exact opposite.
It’s a reminder of why you fought so hard. It’s the warmth people can bring, the safety you give others and is fondly reciprocated. But it’s more than that. It’s love. It’s Rex.
“Who are you?” yells Cid, gesturing to him. The others are still on high alert, with not even the likes of Echo noticing the comforting blue paint.
His gloved hands cautiously pull down his hood, revealing the face you’ve longed to see again. He looks uncertain, his eyes glancing over everyone until finally landing on you.
Although his face is sullen with a mist of hesitancy shrouding his expression, you can still see his gaze soften for you. And that’s all you need to know it’s actually him standing in front of you, not some brainwashed soldier or distraction sent by the Empire. It’s truly him, the Rex you know and love.
Despite always wanting to hold out hope that you would meet him someday, you couldn’t deny the facts stated on the Empire’s records. You remember the ache in your chest when Tech read it out, solemnly stating that Rex was reported dead.
Tears sprout from your eyes, a mixture of pure happiness and relief washing over you. Echo opens his mouth to speak but you get there first, taking the words out of his mouth.
“Rex!” his name comes out as a choked cry, your knees starting to buckle as you close the distance between you both, Hunter and Cid automatically stepping out of your way.
You don’t think you’ve ever felt so much emotion at once. Even when you first heard the news that Rex supposedly perished with the others, you suppressed your emotions. Though that was more out of fear, unsure if you could control the power of the force while facing so much grief.
Perhaps that’s another reason why you distanced yourself from the force, scared that the constantly lurking presence of the dark side might have used such powerful yet negative emotions against you.
You know Rex isn’t a big fan of PDA, especially around his brothers but as you throw your arms around him, you feel him hold you back. His strong arms wrap around your waist, one hand running up your back to keep you as close as possible.
It’s a surreal moment to feel him against you, his hard armour hidden underneath his cloak digging into you as you try to press yourself even closer to him. Not that you particularly care about that right now. The only thing that matters at this moment is Rex.
Burying your face into his neck, the warmth of his skin soothes you and for the first time in months, you relax.
“I… I thought you…” you want to say a million things at once, your brain unable to pick one coherent thought to say “I heard what happened… the mission report said you were… Oh, Rex”.
Giving up on trying to speak, you move to see that handsome face of his again, your hands instinctively coming up to his jawline.
The look in his eyes isn’t what you’re expecting. A mixture of worry and fear shines in his gaze, his eyebrows pinching together as he wordlessly looks at you. It doesn’t take a jedi to figure out why this is his initial reaction. Considering the recent event between all clones and jedi’s, it’s understandable for him to be nervous.
He’s scared that you won’t trust him, that what you once had together has died alongside the Republic. There’s only one way you can think of that can give Rex the reassurance he so desperately yearns for. Using your hands to keep his head in place, you kiss him.
At first, you feel him tense. The shock that not only are you kissing him in general but in front of his brothers making him freeze. But just as you wonder if you made the right move, Rex melts into the kiss, his grip on your waist tightening as his lips begin moving against yours.
Unbeknownst to you, as your lips touch your beloved Captain’s, the Batches' mouths all happen to fall open. Well, most of them anyways. Tech is too busy doing something on his datapad to witness the kiss.
Wrecker, who stands next to Tech, gives his brother a nudge. Tech looks up at his shocked face before looking over at you and Rex… and then casually back down to his datapad.
“Wha- Tech,” Wrecker tries to whisper “are you seeing what I’m seeing? Or was I hit on the head too hard?”.
Tech glances up again just in time to see the end of the kiss and you affectionately bury your head back into the crook of Rex’s neck, the both of you whispering sweet nothings to one another.
“Considering her reaction when I informed her of the Captain's supposed demise, this isn’t a surprise” he shrugs, refocusing on his datapad.
Despite Tech’s statement that this isn’t a surprise, it most definitely is for Hunter, who stands there in complete shock. Even with his heightened senses, Hunter didn’t expect this. He isn’t sure what to do or where to look but thankfully, Omega grabs his attention.
She lets out a small gasp as she makes her way to the front of the group, looking up at the others before a large grin spreads across his face.
“They look like good friends” she gives Hunter a wink and he rolls his eyes, subtly placing his hand on Omega's shoulder so he can swiftly cover her eyes if you two kiss again.
Just like his brothers, Echo’s mouth falls open too but his lips quickly form a smirk. Memories come rushing back to him as he remembers the rumours that you two liked each other as well as the countless number of times Fives would try to get the Captain to admit his feelings.
It’s a strangely satisfying moment to see you both wrapped in each other’s embrace, finally getting some closure to what was once seen as a far fetched piece of gossip.
Speaking loudly so you’ll both hear, Echo pats Hunter on the back “C’mon, let’s give them some space”. As you pull your attention away from Rex, you watch the others silently agree, most of them giving you a reassuring nod before retreating to the bar area.
Within a matter of moments, you lead Rex to one of the quieter parts of the parlour, your hand in his as you sit on one of the lumpy couches. Rex sits beside you, hand still enclosed around yours.
You watch the Captain with adoration in your eyes, giving him a moment of silence as he gathers his thoughts. Your gaze lowers to his neck, noticing how his Adam's apple bobs anxiously. But then, he speaks.
“I… I thought about you every rotation, no matter how painful it was” Rex keeps his gaze down, watching how his thumb begins to rub the back of your hand “I wasn’t sure if you… well, if you made it. I tried searching for you through mission reports but when the Republic fell, my code was denied access to all official reports”. He huffs out a laugh “I was surprised the Empire was smart enough to do that”.
Giving his hand a small squeeze, you smile, though Rex doesn't notice, his eyes still cast downwards “Tech was able to hack into it. I’m marked as missing in action and uh, well, you’re actually marked as deceased”. You’re unsure how to deliver such news, unable to tell whether being labelled as dead is a good or bad thing, both choices having some pro’s and con’s.
Rex nods, quietly taking in this new information, though right now, he’s not that bothered by what the Empire has him marked as. Rex has more important things to address, the Empire surprisingly being at the back of his mind.
Staying silent, he lets the moment pass. Rex knows why you’re telling him this and he finds some solace in how you want to give him any intel you have. But there’s more important matters… or, well, relationships to discuss.
Yet despite its importance, Rex is hesitant to bring this up. On one hand, he doesn’t want to mention Order 66 or the horrors it caused but he can’t just ignore it either.
As much as he wants to bask in his ignorance, oblivious to what you’ve been through since then or how you feel about the clones, it’s not something he can do. He has to know how you feel.
Speaking rather abruptly, the words spill from his mouth “I’m sorry for showing up without any warning”.
You’re taken aback by his words, not seeing a reason why Rex should be apologising. Taking a deep breath, he elaborates “I’m not sure where you were when it happened, or what you’ve been through… I don’t even know if you want to see me and if you don’t, I’ll go”.
Finally Rex looks up at you, his eyes glossy as he tries to keep his composure. But his voice betrays him, his tone cracking as he continues  “I want you to know that, you won’t hear from me again if that’s what you think is best. You have that choice. I don’t want to put you through more pain, especially after everything this face has done to you”.
You know he’s referring to the clones in general, doing a small gesture to his very recognizable face. Although Rex wasn’t with you when Order 66 was put in place, he has some understanding of what you’ve been through.
Rex has had a lot of time to think about this, to picture how his brothers suddenly turned on you and tried with all their might to kill you.
It was this very thought that made him hesitate when you first entered the parlour. He was going to call out to you but then the doubts crept in. Maybe you wouldn’t see him but instead simply see the face of a clone, a face that tried to kill you, albeit not him specifically.
You’re sure you can feel your heart ache, watching as Rex tries his best to keep his emotions at bay. Bringing your hand up, you gently cup his face.
Before you can even speak, Rex leaves out a shaky breath, your touch comforting him in ways he didn’t know was possible.
Your voice is stern, determined to get your point across so Rex will undoubtedly understand how you feel. “The only thing this face has done is love me, cherish me, care for me when I’m injured…” you list out as Rex closes his eyes, hanging on your every word “carry me to bed when I’m too stubborn to rest, cheer me up when I’m sad and it’s this face that’ll go to the most dodgiest looking parlour in all of Ord Mantell in the hopes of finding me there”.
He smiles at that last part, a stray tear running down his cheek as he opens his eyes.
You’re quick to wipe it away, mirroring his smile with one of your own. Needing to keep you close, Rex rests his forehead on yours, savouring the sensation of your breath hitting against his face. “You’re sure?” He asks in a low whisper.
“Positive” you confirm, unable to resist the urge to capture his lips in another kiss.
Over at the bar, Wrecker tries his best to inconspicuously look over. Keeping his gaze fixed on the two of you, he nudges Hunter, causing the Sergeant to groan. “They're kissing again” he announces.
Echo rolls his eyes, poking Wrecker with his scomp link “Stop gawking at them, will ya?”. Wrecker flinches away from him, almost stumbling on to Hunter “Hey! Watch it with that!”.
“You’re the one who needs to watch it,” Echo retorts, his gaze drifting over to you two as he repeats his sentence in his head. “Actually, no, don’t watch it or well, them” he tries to clarify, huffing at himself before hastily stating “you need to watch where you’re staring!”.
“I’m just keeping an eye on her!” Wrecker snaps back “I didn’t think Regs and Jedi’s were on good terms anymore”.
Hanging his head low, Hunter tightens his grip on his drink. “Will the two of you shut it?” he huffs, feeling the inklings of a headache coming on.
Echo opens his mouth to say more but stops himself, not wanting you and Rex to join them mid-argument. Instead, he decides to take another swig of his drink.
“Wrecker does have a point,” Tech chimes in “Rex could still have his inhibitor chip in place”.
Echo wastes no time in jumping in again, determined to defend his Captain. “Oh yeah, he definitely looks like he’s still chipped,” he replies sarcastically.
“Perhaps another defective chip? Or maybe the control the inhibitor chips possess are only for a limited time” Tech thinks out loud, purposely ignoring Echo’s response.
“This is one long kiss,” Wrecker comments, causing Echo to once again roll his eyes as he realises Wrecker is still looking over “you don’t think they're going to uh… y’know… take it further? They know we can see them, right?”.
Echo doesn't even warrant that question deserving of a reply.
Almost causing Hunter’s heart to jump out of his chest, Omega chirps up “How would they take it further”. She looks up at the Batch with an excited smile, the adrenaline of another clone being here yet to settle.
Hunter shoots Wrecker a glare, hurriedly fishing a few credits out of his pocket. “Here, kid” he drops the credits into Omega’s hand “do me a favour and beat Wrecker in a few games of Dejarik”.
Omega’s eyes grow wide at the credits as she leaves out an “Oooooh” noise. Barking out a loud laugh, Wrecker beams “C’mon best of three, loser has to buy the winner Mantell Mix”. As the two of them wander off to another part of the parlour, Hunter leaves out a silent sigh of relief.
The abrupt sound of Wrecker’s laugh catches both you and Rex off guard, causing Rex to reluctantly break off the kiss. His eyes dart from your face to where the others relax at the bar. “Was that directed at us?” he quietly mumbles, heat racing to his cheeks.
Giving him a reassuring smile, you peck his lips one more time “I doubt it, Rex”.
Rex gives you his signature lopsided smile in response, something you’ve ached to see for months. It makes you want to kiss him again but you can sense the others glancing over.
“You ready to go over to them?” he asks, though judging from how his gaze lingers on your lips, you’re not the only one with the urge to kiss.
“Yeah,” you nod, giving him a playful nudge as you add “the sooner you say hi to your brothers, the sooner I get you all to myself”.
Rex chuckles in reply, standing as he tries to compose himself. “Oh you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to get you alone” he offers you his hand, shooting you a mischievous wink as he does.
“Well, Captain, you just have to wait another twenty minutes and I’m all yours” taking his hand, you stand, ready to reunite Rex with the Batch.

The evening hours pushed forward as you wandered your way through the Resolute, you had a small bag on hand containing all of your possessions. Growing up in the Jedi Order, you were taught of the dangers of material possessions, and were highly encouraged to limit what you owned to maintain better control of your emotions and impulses. Even with this small bag barely over halfway full, you still owned more than most Jedi, and you suspected that many looked down upon you for this. But, if they did, nobody said anything about it, and that made you uneasy.
But what made you uneasy in this moment was your inability to find your quarters on the Resolute, and the sight of countless clones all around you. You wished you could be alone, but you knew that each of these clones had a job to do, and a duty to the Republic to do their job. There was no wishing away these clones when they saluted you as you walked by. When they spoke amongst themselves, forcing you to hear their identical voices. You tried to block it all out, tried not to remember your clones. The ones you failed not too long ago. Each time you looked a clone in the eyes, you saw one of your own men. Each time you heard a clone speak, you heard one of your own men. Men you could never see again. And it didn’t help that you got no sleep the night before either. You spent your entire first night in the 501st studying the battle plans for your first mission with the battalion. You knew that sleep was important before a fight, but you didn’t want to fail this battalion, You didn’t want to go through that again. You couldn’t.
Ahsoka, who was dismissed from the lengthy meeting with Rex, Anakin, and Admiral Yularen, spotted you walking aimlessly. She noticed that you ignored the troopers who saluted you, and examined that you appeared distressed. Your hood was up but there was no hiding your face. When your eyes spotted a clone, you sharply looked down, the floor beneath you looking mighty interesting to you all of the sudden. Your upper teeth caught your bottom lip, refusing to let go as your lip discolored slightly and wrinkled. Your eyes were dazed and glazed over as they refused to focus on what was in front of you. The dark circles under your eyes were obvious and prominent, you looked absolutely exhausted.
Ahsoka politely approached you and gently placed her hand on your shoulder. You flinched at the contact, then slowly moved your head up to meet Ahsoka’s kind gaze. Your eyes were wide and your mouth hung open slightly, your bottom lip red from the biting. There was no hiding from Ahsoka Tano.
“Master y/n, I saw you walking and I just wanted to check in on you.” Ahsoka removed her hand from your shoulder and you turned to face her, removing your hood. “Are you having a hard time finding your quarters? I can help you, I believe your quarters are located near mine.” She offered.
“Oh…” you had to stifle a yawn. “That would be great actually, thank you.” You replied. “But please- don’t call me Master… just y/n will suffice.”
Ahsoka’s mouth widened into a toothy grin. “Of course, y/n! Follow me, I think I know where your quarters are.” Ahsoka began to lead the way. Her pace was a bit fast for your liking, but you could tell it was just because she liked you and was excited to help. Ahsoka’s demeanor brought a slight smile to your face. One that was genuine, but quickly disappeared when you caught sight of more clones.
While you followed Ahsoka you made sure not to walk next to her, but somewhat behind her. There was nothing more you wanted right then than to just disappear as clones from the 501st continuously stopped Ahsoka in her tracks to greet her, and to unfortunately try to greet you too. In response you simply kept your head down or nodded your head without saying anything. Many clones took notice of this, and gave Ahsoka a confused look. In response, Ahsoka simply lifted her hand up, silently telling the troopers to not worry, and not to take any offense to your coldness. As you continued walking you focused on blocking out the images of your old troopers that appeared in your head.. They haunted your mind’s eye and tormented your walk behind Ahsoka. You began to see flashes of your old Captain on the field, off the field, training for the next battle. It all began to overwhelm you, until-
“We’re here! These are your quarters, right down the hall from mine!” Ahsoka exclaimed, bringing you out of your trance. You turned to face the sound of a door sliding open to reveal an empty room, simply furnished with one bed and a small dresser next to it. The walls of your room matched the rest of the Resolute. It was boring and simple, but it was your room and you would have to make do. At least there was a small refresher which was accessible next to your bed.
Ahsoka looked proud of herself. “Where, there you have it. If you need anything from me, visit my quarters.” Ahsoka pointed up the hallway to a closed door. “Please don’t hesitate if you want to talk about anything.” Ahsoka placed her hand back on your shoulder. “We’re all here for you.”
“Oh…!” You weren’t exactly sure how to respond, but you felt a slight smile creep upon your face once again. “Th-thank you, Ahsoka. I-I’m grateful.” You stuttered, mentally punching yourself for your awkwardness. You rubbed the back of your neck with your hands as you led yourself into your new quarters on the Resolute. Ahsoka let you get to it, knowing to give you the space you needed to finally relax. Once you heard the door shut behind you, your body immediately began to release tension. You sluggishly peeled off your shoes before throwing them into a corner.
It was just you and your quarters, no Anakin, no Ahsoka, no clones, no Rex. You noticed that the Captain tended to stare for longer than you were comfortable with. You could tell it wasn’t anything malicious, but you were still confused as to why he took so much apparent interest in you.
Thinking about it began to give you a headache, you rubbed one of your temples with one of your hands, while allowing the other to toss your bag onto your bed. You plopped down onto the mattress, sitting up while you untied the string on your bag to allow the top to furl open. You carelessly stuck your hand into your bag in hopes of finding your water container to help relieve your headache. After some searching, your hand touched something that stopped you in your tracks. The familiar sensation of the item made your heart drop. Your fingers gripped the item as you slowly lifted it out of your bag. Once the item came into view you knew exactly what it was, a broken piece of your old Captain’s helmet, all that was left of it after the incident, all you had left of him.
This was the first time you’ve really searched through your bag since placing the helmet piece into it all those weeks ago. You jumped at the sight of the item and dropped it back into your bag, a light clinking sound accompanying its landing against your other items. You jumped to a standing position. Your breath quickened into shallow heaves. Your vision unfocused and your quarters turned around you. Your fingers grasped your hair and began to pull. Images of your Captain started to haunt you once again, flashing in and out of your mind at a nauseating pace. After a moment of absolute panic, you were able to ground yourself enough to think of a way to calm down.
Your limbs shook as you nervously sat yourself back onto your bed. You lifted your bag and casted it aside onto the floor. You removed your lightsabers and your belt and placed them on your dresser. As you crossed your legs and rested your hands onto your knees, you attempted to take a deep breath in. It was shaky and uneven, but you forced your lungs to fill until they couldn’t expand anymore. Then, you let the breath out, and felt your heart rate slow slightly. You repeated this until it became automatic to you. Deep breath in, deep breath out. Again and again. Then, the relaxation took hold, and you felt yourself losing the material world.
You were meditating, your physical body meant nothing to you in this state. You could sense that your quarters no longer existed around you either, just a soothing darkness. It was just you and your mind. You called out into the darkness to see what would respond. After some minutes you felt a familiar presence, one that was… off, but provided you sense a serenity nonetheless. You reached your hand out into the darkness to unveil more. But more darkness responded.
You felt… disappointed. This presence you felt was something you missed without completely understanding it. But, the meditation relaxed you nonetheless, it helped you feel more like the Jedi that you were expected to be. You thought you felt well enough to retreat from your meditation, until you felt a sudden presence overwhelm your senses.
You let out a yelp in response, your voice echoing in the dreamlike realm. The presence felt similar to that of your old Captain, and it felt terrifying, you felt that he was terrified.
“Rory?!” You yelled into the abyss, but you saw nothing, your eyes were telling you that you were alone, but you began to hear his pleas.
“Y/N!” You heard your Captain scream. He sounded as though he was in pain, he wanted your help. He NEEDED your help.
“RORY!” You screeched. “I can help you! Just tell me where you are!” All you heard in response were his agonizing screams. “Rory, please!” You still heard no coherent response from your Captain.
“Hey!” The screams, what sounded distant at first, started to become louder and louder. Your arms were locked in place in fear, overwhelming you greatly in the darkness.
“Hello?!” They were louder now. You were too scared to yell, but you felt something bubbling up within you.
“Y/N!” This time it felt as though someone was right in front of you. The sensation was enough for another scream to burst from within you.
“RORY!” You belted. The intensity of it all took you out of your trance. All of the sudden you were back in your room, you felt sweat pooling together all over you. Your breath was untamed. Your eyes were unfocused as your pupils danced around your quarters. You were out of control, until you heard a voice.
“Hey! Are you alright? Who’s Rory?” The voice captured your attention away from your nightmare. Your focus came back to you and your pupils relaxed to allow you to see the source of the voice, and it was Rex. He was standing only some steps away from your bed, leaned slightly towards you. He had a tray full of food in his hands, presumably from the Resolute’s mess hall. His face wasn’t very close to yours, but close enough to allow you to spot the details in his face. His eyes were full of concern for you as they examined yours, his eyebrows were angled in a distraught way that wrinkled his forehead. You had no idea how long he’s been here.
“Captain…? How long… have you been in my room?” You managed to ask in between breaths. This clearly caught Rex off guard.
“Oh, uh…” The Captain shot his posture back up as he promptly took a couple strides back towards the door. Embarrassment infected his face as he lost his composure. Gone was Rex’s Captain-like demeanor. All that was left in front of you was an embarrassed and stuttering man. “I-I just, was walking down the hall w-when I heard someone screaming. I-I didn’t intend to intrude o-on you, I just-”
“I understand.” You interjected, placing your vision downwards, refusing to look the clone in the eyes. “Thank you for your concern, Captain.” You forced yourself to weakly smile for the Captain’s sake. “But I would truly rather be alone right now.”
Despite how uncomfortable it made you, you then allowed your eyes to settle onto Rex’s in an attempt to convince him that you were okay. You felt guilty that he had to hear you in that state, that you were the reason he had to drop everything to check in on you. The last thing you wanted was to be a burden to another clone. Luckily, Rex seemed convinced after an uncomfortably long moment. He still looked concerned for you, but his expression softened slightly as he seemed to respect your wishes nonetheless.
“I understand, General. I apologize for the intrusion.” Rex stated as he saluted you, before turning to walk out the door. Your smile faded as you stared at his back as the door hissed open to allow him passage back outside, and snapped shut again. You rubbed your eyes with one of your hands as you started practicing your deep breathing again in hopes of fully relaxing. Rex’s distraction largely helped you enough to calm you down, but your heart rate was still elevated slightly.
As the beating of your heart continued to slow to its resting tempo, you thought about what had just transpired just minutes ago. Your panic attack, your horrific visions, Rex being in your quarters. He would never have been there if you didn’t yell like you were in danger, if you were actually acting like the Jedi you were supposed to be. Ever since the incident, your emotions have been… heightened to say the least. The order clearly noticed this, hence the reason you were assigned under Anakin’s watch. Your emotions have affected you greatly but you didn’t want to be a burden and share the load with others, you’ve already done that enough.
You noticed a lightly colored spec out of the corner of your eye, and you looked over to see that it was the tray of food that Rex was holding earlier on the floor by your door. Suddenly you felt extremely embarrassed, did he forget his food? Or maybe he brought the food for you? And oh no, he definitely heard you say Rory’s name, didn’t he? Those thoughts made your head spin, your face became hot as you approached the tray and took it into your hands. You still haven’t had dinner yet, you knew that you were hungry, and it would be wrong to waste good food. Especially since you had no idea how to find Rex to return the meal. You brought the tray back to your bed, and as you ate, you felt your mood improving as you finally had your first good meal all day. But, there was still an itching thought in the back of your mind. You have been trying to avoid clones as much as possible since you lost your battalion. But Rex’s kindness, or at least his consideration towards you, made you feel conflicted. Instead of instantly kicking Rex out of your room, you welcomed his presence more than you would have expected and you didn’t know why. Either way, you had to continue to study the war plans. You finished up your meal, and got right back to studying. You couldn’t fail these clones.
- - -
Rex made his way through the residential halls towards a data room. During his travel his brothers would salute him, to which Rex would return the favor but would not slow his pace towards his destination.
Yes, he brought the meal specifically for you. In the moment he thought it would have been a good excuse to have been coincidentally walking through the halls to coincidentally walk past your quarters and coincidentally have the chance to talk to you. He mentally kicked himself for his stupidity and his strange need to speak with you. The first day he saw you he saw something in your expression that drew him to you, despite the fact that he didn’t have the words to describe it. He saw it in your quarters too, after he rushed in when he heard you scream. You just looked more scared, and alone. The way you looked was something he was familiar with in a strange way. He barely even knew you, but he, for whatever reason, knew that he wanted to get to know you. But what he did back there was an obvious overstepping of your boundaries. It was not his business to enter your quarters without an invitation, and he felt guilty even thinking about it. Of course he intended to knock on your door like a normal person, but when he heard you yelling, he felt he had no choice but to enter just to make sure you weren’t hurt. He just hoped that you weren’t upset, and that you at least enjoyed the food he left you.
Either way, he heard you yell a name he was not familiar with, but considering your affiliation with the Jedi and how many millions of men were in this army, he had a hunch you were referencing a clone.
The door to the data room was wider than what was provided in the residential halls. The hiss the door secreted before it opened was deeper, but the door whipped opened just a quickly despite the heavier weight the contraption had to bear. Rex peeked into the room, and luckily, it seemed as though he would be alone. Rex marched in, head and eyes moving independently in order to locate the data book. Once he found it Rex put in his password provided to him by the Republic, and the book glowed to life, its blue hue shining against the white of Rex’s armor.
Rex prepared himself to type, but then paused, and hit his palm against his forehead as he rolled his eyes. He had a name, but not an identification number. Rex grumbled to himself as he continued to press his palm against his face, agonizing over his mistake. Sometimes it was easy for Rex to forget that he and his brothers were not born with these names. Despite the fact that millions of men looked just like him, their names gave each of his brothers another character, another personality.
“Something happen?”
It was Cody.
“Cody?” Rex stepped back, trying to act natural. “When did you get here?”
“Just now, but I’ve been here long enough to see that you need some help. Can I?” Cody inquired, eyeing the databook.
“Actually, yeah.” Rex began, “have you ever met another trooper who calls himself Rory?”
Cody took a moment to think, his eyebrows furrowed as he was deep in thought. “You know what? I think I have before. What, do you need to know his numbers?”
“I think I do.”
“Do you want to tell me why?”
Rex hesitated.
“That’s something I’ll have to talk to you about later.” Rex replied. Cody side eyed his brother with a curious suspicion, but shrugged his urge to ask more aside as he leaned in next to Rex and typed in the identification number.
“I won’t push you, but I better hear about this at 79s if the story is as interesting as I’m hoping it is.” Cody laughed. Giving Rex a big pat on the shoulder. But he was already extremely focused on the data book in front of him. Considering his options, Cody removed himself and walked out the door to return to his duties. Rex, now alone, was fully able to focus on the screen.
Rex methodically read over every bit of information that this trooper had to offer. His date of birth, his training notes, his battalion and who he led into battle. All until his eyes found the end of this clone’s story. ‘Killed in action.’
Rex’s eyes grew wide as he read those three words over again. Suddenly his face felt hot and he looked away from the screen as regret began to boil in his chest. Maybe Rex was (once again) overstepping your boundaries here. Clones he has never heard of died all the time, and it’s not like any of this was his business, he did not know you, and you did not seem interested in getting to know Rex or his brothers. It was already a bit much that he thought about you enough to visit your quarters, why was he making your past his business? Why did he care like you were an old friend? Rex looked back at Rory’s file, but decided not to read any more, and shut the machine off before swiftly exiting the data room.
- - -
You woke up to the sound of your alarm. Your body was mangled from sleep as you unfurled yourself and reached up to turn off the obnoxious sound. When you sat up you wiped the drool from your cheek and picked up your datapad from off the floor. You must have fallen asleep while studying, the datapad was still on and your room was still a mess from the day before. After Rex left your room you studied for the rest of the day and into the night, hopefully you got enough sleep, as today was the day of your first mission with the 501st.
Most of your morning was a blur as you found your body walking out the door, then suddenly forcing down a quick breakfast, then suddenly standing in a dropship flying over a battlefield, hearing that a plan was being explained by Anakin, but you couldn’t make out the words. Your head was angled slightly downwards as your vision refused to focus. This was your first mission back, you studied the plan and the planet for countless hours, counteracting the benefits of studying with the detriment of losing sleep. You thought you prepped the best you could for your new battalion, but you clearly were a bit tired and stressed out of your mind.
Rex noticed this as he stood with you, Anakin, and Ahsoka. “Assist the natives of the planet, drive back the Separatists, and ensure their freedom,” Rex heard Anakin say, but part of his focus was on you. He watched as you looked at nothing in particular, as your thoughts panicked around each other in circles. Rex considered getting your attention, but to do what? Wish you good luck? Provide some other gesture of comfort to you? He felt a little nervous even thinking about it. Although you didn’t think much of Rex entering your room the evening prior, Rex assumed that you did, and he worried about how you thought of his actions. Rex hesitantly weighed his options, but was mentally interrupted by Anakin.
“Y/n, did you get all that?” Anakin, inquired. You looked surprised as you blinked your eyes upwards to the General.
“I- Of course, Master Skywalker.” You forced. But Anakin was clearly too focused on the fight ahead as he let an excited smile corrupt his face. “Great! Then I’ll let you take it from here.” Without warning Anakin leaped from the dropship as it was beginning its descent. Ahsoka, yelling about how Anakin never let her go first, promptly bounded to the sky and dived towards the battlefield. Your eyes grew wide at the carelessness of the other generals. You heard Fives and the other troopers laugh and holler at their generals’ bold dash towards the battlefield. Rex lifted his hand sternly to notify his men to stop the noise, and he looked at you as his brothers quieted down.
“Are you… ready for this, General?” Rex inquired, clearly sounding concerned. Your head turned to meet his helmet, calculating what to say next to satisfy him. But, nothing came to mind. As your dropship landed, the rumbling noise of dozens of other dropships infected your senses. You stepped towards the edge of the dropship, peering out into the battlefield. You took a deep breath to try to calm some of your nerves against the chaos of the war. You failed tremendously, but you had to say something to these clones. You turned towards them, the wind lifting your hair and your robe in its wake. Blaster shots were heard in the near distance, signaling that they were missing out on the fight. You had to go now.
“I am, and I hope you all are too.” You half-lied, preparing yourself to sound more confident. “Let’s go!”
You heard the battle cry of the men behind you as you leaped from the dropship into battle. You were greeted by a planet supposed to be covered in lush greenery and thick forests, but you were met with an empty field, the deep green grass you thought would be beneath you was desecrated, dirt mounds littered the battlefield. Your battalion arrived in the middle of a firefight between the citizens of this planet and Separatist forces. Luckily to got there when you did, the citizens were slightly losing their fight for freedom. You had to sprint over some dead civilians in order to make it to the heart of the battle. Anakin and Ahsoka were far from you but you were able to locate them easily by spotting their lightsabers if you needed to.
The battle was intense. Blaster fire and explosions could be heard from all directions accompanied by yells and screams alike. Not one second went by where a trooper or a citizen wasn’t running past you to get closer to their target. All hell had broken loose, but for some reason, you weren’t afraid. Despite your lack of sleep from the night before, the battle reinvigorated you. As you deflected blaster shots back at your opponents, it reminded you of how things used to be for you in this war. How you, your captain, and your battalion would charge into battle without a care in the world, destroying the Separatist threat wherever the Republic sent you. As you cut down separatist droids, you remembered the pride you felt as you celebrated each victory with your men, how you would spend time with your captain afterward, and-
Then you tripped.
You broke your fall with your knees and elbows, feeling the sore pain bubble up as you tried to shake your dizziness. As you waited for the dizziness to dissipate your teeth grit together and your eyes remained shut tight. Once you could focus, you strained your neck to look behind yourself, to see that you had tripped over a fallen trooper. Suddenly the confidence that the battle had gifted you quickly disappeared, and what replaced it was an acute feeling of horror. You practically threw yourself at the clone in order to save him. “Trooper!” you yelled. “Are you alright?! What are your injuries?!”
No response.
You gripped the trooper’s helmet tight as you struggled to remove it. After a moment of strain, however, you managed to free the trooper’s face from the confines of his helmet. But what you hoped to see wouldn’t come. Despite your nervousness towards the clones as of late, you wanted nothing more than to see their eyes full of life looking into yours. But all you saw were the lifeless eyes of the man beneath you, staring into nothing as his head slacked over. Then, you noticed the blaster shot wound burned into his neck. He was dead.
“No…” Your eyes began to water as you took the trooper’s lifeless body into your arms, silently sobbing and soaking the trooper’s face with your tears. You did not know this trooper, but knowing that maybe, just maybe, you could have done something different to save this man’s life ate at your soul like acid.
You continued to mourn the clone until a blaster shot only just missed you and burned the ground next to your leg. Your eyes locked onto the scorch mark on the Earth, and you felt a burning anger bubble within you. You let the trooper go, his limp body accepting the Earth as you turned to pick up your lightsabers. As they ignited, your eyes shifted to look at a small company of battle droids. Rage infected your eyes as your senses tunnel-visioned on the droids. You began to walk, then run, then sprint towards the company. Your ears refused to hear anything other than your footsteps, your labored breaths, and your blood beating in your body. Those droids were going to pay for this, and you were going to kill them.
You were too furious to be subtle, you dashed in front of the battle droids with your lightsabers ready. If they said anything about your arrival, you did not hear it, you were ready to pounce. With your passion equipped, you demanded the force to relinquish the droids’ blasters from their grasps. You swiftly put one of your sabers away and put your hand out in front of you. As your fingers clawed the air, you closed your fist, expecting blasters to come flying towards you. But nothing happened.
You snapped back into reality with a gasp. Your eyes grew wide as shock filled your body, paralyzing you as the battle droids realized your presence. You stared at your closed fist, scrambling to understand what had just transpired. The droids looked at you with their heads cocked to the side in pure confusion. After a moment, they all aimed their blasters at you in unison. You pulled your second saber back out in reaction and prepared to block the shots.
But you couldn’t feel the force. You knew all too well what it felt like to anticipate blaster shots, but right then and there, you felt lost. Your senses were completely blind as the first shot fired from one of the blasters, just missing your head and zooming past your ear. You gasped as dozens of shots suddenly came flying at you. You tried to deflect the shots as best you could, but you only were able to connect a pathetic percentage of them with your sabers. Even then, the shots that bounced off your sabers flew in wildly different directions, not even close to your targets. Rex, not too far from your current location, twisted his head quickly in response to a blaster shot zipping past him, and saw you struggling against dozens of battle droids.
Suddenly you were hit. Your shoulder sharply bounced back in response and you yelped out in pain. With one arm down, you continued to try to make use of your other one against the shots coming towards you. Deflecting some, but many others kept narrowly missing you. You were hit again, this time in the hip, another burning sensation began to resonate in that area as you fell to your knees, waving your lightsaber around at a weakened pace. The battle droids kept marching closer to you, you strained your eyes on the company, thinking this was the end, until you heard a collection of clinking sounds bounce near the droids.
The EMP grenades sparked to life under the feet of the battle droids, causing them to seize for a brief moment, before most of them collapsed to the ground. The remaining battle droids turned to look at Rex, Fives, and Echo bounding towards you. A ringing took over your ears, so you couldn’t hear anything, but you did see a battle droid point towards the clones, with shots following the order. One by one the troopers took out the company, you saw as they all began to fall, each in quick succession from the last. The ringing in your ears became louder and louder as your adrenaline wore off and the pain from your wounds became more intense. Then you felt a hand grip your good shoulder, the ringing suddenly stopped and you were once again surrounded by the sounds of battle around you. You looked away from the droids to see that Rex was kneeling down right in front of you. His hand held onto your good shoulder tightly as his helmet sat almost uncomfortably close to your face.
“General y/n! Can you run?! We need to get you out of here!” Rex yelled.
Worry spread across your face. “I… I don’t know.”
He let your good arm sling over his shoulder, and your whole body shook as you got up on one of your feet. The leg with your injured hip would not allow you to stand, however. You managed to lift the knee up, but right when you attempted to extend it to the ground, the pain was too much to bear. The best you could do was keep your good foot on the ground, and keep the other knee bent to avoid some of the seething pain in your hip.
“This will have to do!” The captain stated. “Let’s go!”
You and Rex ran in tandem with each other. It helped to keep one arm over his shoulders, but in order to run faster and keep you upright Rex had to wrap his arm that was closest to you around your side. The two of you made a good distance together, dodging stray blaster fire and explosives. But the running caused more and more pain to well up within you. It became extremely difficult for you to keep pace, and Rex could tell as your hopping became more and more sluggish, as your breaths became more and more labored. He turned his head to look over at you, and he saw your gritted teeth and tightly shut eyes.
Suddenly you could no longer hold yourself up, Rex felt your arm sliding off his shoulder as you descended to the ground beneath you. Behind his helmet, Rex’s expression warped to that of fear and concern for his General. He practically dived to the ground to help you.
“General! We have to keep moving!” Rex pleaded. But you couldn’t budge. Rex grabbed your arms to try to get you up again, but each attempt led to a yelp from you that stabbed Rex’s heart at an intensity he did not expect. You tried to speak but the pain was too much to bear. Rex hesitated for a moment, listening to your groans in pain and the battle around him. He realized that you were not moving on your own, and there was no way he was going to leave you behind. He looked down at you, and took a deep breath as he closed his eyes.
“Shit…”
With a heave, Rex picked you up into his arms. He lifted your back into one of his hands, and your legs into his other. You let out a pained noise, but Rex did not wait. The moment he confidently had you in his grip he began racing towards a dropship. At first, your hands kept to themselves, resting on the base of Rex’s shoulders. But eventually, they found their way wrapped around his neck to keep yourself stable as Rex sprinted across the uneven terrain. Rex was clearly screaming something into his comms to Kix, but it was hard to hear much of anything, the ringing in your ears was persistent once again, and you were in a world of pain. But, there was something about your current situation that took you out of the moment. As Rex belted into his comms and carried you tightly, you quietly peered up at him. Of course, you couldn’t see his face, but you felt a sense of comfort from being held, from being cared for. Even if it was just because you were injured in battle, this situation you found yourself in with the captain sprouted a familiar feeling within you. A good feeling, something you haven’t felt since…
“AGH!” You felt one of Rex’s shoulders bolt forward. He almost dropped you, but managed to keep hold on your limp body. Rex got shot, and it looked like it hurt.
Rex’s breaths turned into pants as he got close to where a dropship had recently landed. His steps, which slowed when he made contact with the blaster shot, gradually got faster and faster until he returned to the same rapid tempo it was before. Rex was way more shaky now, so your arms were now wrapped around his neck even tighter, and you laid your head onto his good shoulder, next to the crook of his neck, praying for the nightmare to be over. Although engulfed with sweat, Rex’s scent comforted you a bit. While it was distinctly his at the end of the day, some notes within it reminded you of Rory, and for some reason, it helped you feel calmer, despite the chaos occurring around you.
It took all of Rex’s strength to hoist the both of you into the dropship, Kix was impatiently awaiting your arrival, bacta patches in hand. Rex almost dropped you as he placed you onto the ground, sitting you up against the wall. You groaned at the contact with the hard steel, your head was pounding and sweat pooled from all over you. Kix visually examined you quickly before he got started.
“General y/n, we’re going to have to remove your robe so I can assist you.” Kix stated. Rex observed as Kix helped you remove your robe, you bared your teeth tightly as you shifted and moved your wounded areas. Once your robe was off, Rex realized that he had never seen you without it on. Your broad shoulders were accompanied by a top was form fitting, sleeveless, and cropped above your naval. Your pants, however, were loose fitting but cinched at the ankles, and swayed with the wind that passed through the dropship. Rex found himself not only transfixed on your outfit, but on some scars that littered parts of your exposed flesh, mostly concealed by your clothes. When Rex realized he was staring he quickly opted to look around aimlessly with his hands on his hips, praying that you didn’t notice a thing as his face turned red at the thought. Luckily he was wearing his helmet.
“Rex.” Kix started, “I need to examine your shoulder as well.”
“My what?” Rex turned to see bacta patches covering your wounds now. You still seemed in no condition to fight or even stand, but you certainly looked better already.
“Your shoulder, Captain.” Kix was a bit more assertive now as stepped towards Rex, another bacta patch on hand. “Have you forgotten you’ve been shot?”
“Of course not Kix.” Rex states with a slight annoyance. “General y/n is clearly in more need of help than me, I’m doing fine.” Rex lied, clearly hiding pain in his voice.
“For fucks sake Rex, just take off your armor.” Kix ordered. Rex sighed and reluctantly took off his helmet, praying his face wasn’t noticeably red. Then he moved to remove his injured shoulder from his blacks, seething in pain in the process. Then, Kix walked around Rex to face his back. The bacta patch felt cold to the touch as it hugged Rex’s wound, causing Rex to shiver a bit in reaction. As Kix worked on securing the patch to Rex’s skin, Rex snuck a peek at you, and saw that you’ve been looking at him. Locking eyes, you quickly looked away, eyes opting to instead rapidly scan literally everything in your surroundings except for Rex. Rex wasn’t quite sure what exactly to do here, so he simply looked ahead silently as Kix promptly finished up attaching the bacta patch to his shoulder. In the distance, cries of joy could be heard by clones and civilians alike, the battle was won.
- - -
Kix made quick work of the both of you, but once he felt satisfied enough, he excused himself before leaping from the dropship to go assist any injured clones or civilians who needed assistance. Immediately after, Echo hopped in the ship with your lightsabers in hand.
“General, I believe these are yours.” He stated, clearly proud of himself. Your eyes widened and you quickly sat upright with the realization that they were left behind, and you took them gratefully. You were still in a bit of pain, but the bacta was diminishing it by the second.
“I- thank you, Trooper! I don’t know what to say! I…” You trailed off. You were grateful, but still felt awkward about being with clones again.
“Don’t worry General y/n, it was no problem.” Echo assured you. He then saluted you and Rex before returning to the battlefield to assist his brothers. You noticed and observed as Rex carefully pulled his arm back through his blacks, before realigning his armor and re-equipping his helmet. Then, he politely acknowledged you before turning to exit the dropship. The setting sun contrasted Rex’s silhouette, causing an orange shine to compliment his form.
“Wait…!” You quietly pleaded, hating your almost desperate tone. Rex turned around, his lifeless mask facing you once again, hiding any facial expression you could read.
“I… I just wanted to thank you, Captain.” You stood up, only slightly struggling in your attempt. “I never would have made it out of there without you and your troopers’ help, I owe you my life.”
Rex did not hesitate. “You owe me nothing, General y/n. You are one of us now, if I see one of my own in need, I go to help them. No questions asked, no debt owed.”
You took what Rex said to heart, and you gave him a slight smile. “I appreciate that, Captain.” Without the force, you could only hope that he was smiling behind his mask as he saluted you. This time, as he turned to exit your presence, the smile on your face did not fade because it was fake. No, your smile turned into a frown as you looked downwards at your lightsabers sitting in your hands. Why were you unable to use the force so suddenly? It almost got you and the troopers that came to save your life killed. It was something you would have to get to the bottom of, before any clones get injured on your account.

The CCs in your care were honestly quite adorable. 3636 had twisted his ankle during training, and needed to go to the med bay, which meant that 1010 also needed to go to the med bay for a life-threatening stomach ache that he had just noticed. That he was holding 3636’s hand, as they both clutched your sleeve was completely unrelated.
With Alpha, they were soldiers always. With you, they were children, who needed to be reminded that kind touches were valuable too, so 3636 was being treated to a rare piggyback ride through the stark white halls of Tipoca City.
“MoMo?” 3636 asked quietly, using the nickname that 7567 had given you much to Alpha’s eternal irritation.
“Yes, kiddo,” you replied.
“Why do you and Alpha fight so much?”
Before you could answer, 1010 piped up and said, “‘Cause MoMo says he’s an asshole!”
“Where did you get that language?” You asked, trying to hide your smile.
“From you. I heard you say it to Lama Su the other day,” He replied with his signature smirk.
“Eavesdropping again, huh?”
“It’s fun!” He giggled.
“Is that the only reason?” 3636 asked, undeterred.
“We disagree on what’s best for you boys, but ultimately that’s what we both want. We’ll figure it out,” you answered.
“If you both want the same thing, shouldn’t you try being friends?”
“Ad’ika, have you memorized all the components to a light cruiser, as well as you’ve memorized all of the problems Alpha and I have to work on?”
“Yes! I can tell you all of them right now!”
He launched into the list, sparing you from further questioning as the three of you continued down the corridor.

Rex x F!Reader One-Shot - My Love
Tumblr media
Warnings: Hurt/Mention Of Depression/Comfort/Fluff/Slightly Suggestive
AC: I just read a post from a mutual(?) here on tumblr, dated back a few days ago. It was so relatable, and I felt bad for not being able to really do much for her, but I didn't want to impose either. So I just wrote this, maybe she reads it, maybe not. Let's say I just leave this here for anyone who needs it, in hopes that it helps a little.
I know guys, I still have to work on many requests, I just felt like I should do this. Don't worry, I get back to working on your requests.
Tumblr media
It's one of those days. Lack of motivation, feeling alone in the world, depression kicking your ass again. It feels like you're sitting in a deep, dark hole and somewhere far above, there's some light, and it's unreachable far away. To make matters worse, you've barely gotten to see Rex in the last few months, always just glimpses, barely time to really talk, let alone do anything else. Your fingers play with the pendant on the leather band you wear around your neck. Rex brought it back for you from one of his missions. A colorful reflective stone, blessed by a tribe of an alien planet on which he had been stationed for a time. Supposedly, this thing brings good luck, but lately you haven't been feeling much of it. You're supposed to be off today, but you're sitting in the canteen, your eyes wandering around the many familiar faces, hoping to find comfort in them, to create something like an illusion of Rex's presence. But it doesn't work, all you feel is this dull pressure in your chest, this heaviness in your limbs. You breathe in and out slowly, paying close attention to your breathing, trying to calm yourself, to find comfort in the regularity of your air intake. But your hand clenches around the stone on the leather band. Frustration joins all the other negative feelings.
A deep, soft voice behind you says, "What a sight for my weary eyes". You almost jump out of your skin in shock when you hear Rex. He steps around the table and sits down opposite to you. In public, you can't show your intimacy, your relationship, especially not here. Rex smiles, but his gaze becomes thoughtful, probing. "Rex?" you say softly, as if you're not sure if you're awake or dreaming. Rex's expression softens a bit as he says, "I've been looking all over for you. Today's your day off. What are you doing here?" You don't really know what to answer, you want to fall into his arms, you want to feel his warmth. But right now all you can do is look at him and talk to him in a whisper.
"You are really here" His brows go up in concern, and he says, "Meet me at the intersection of hangar B2 and B1, in five minutes." You look at him questioningly, but nod. You lack the energy to disagree. As Rex gets up and leaves the canteen, you look after him. Hell, you even love the way he walks, so upright, powerful, with a masculine, military elegance. And yet he walks differently than most of his brothers, but maybe you're just imagining it. Either way, Rex is special.
You wait a moment before getting up and slowly making your way. You wonder what he is up to, why he wants to meet you there. In fact, you'd much rather go home with him, really enjoy some time with him, but maybe he wouldn't be here for long again. You arrive at the intersection and look around, no Rex in sight. But someone grabs your shoulder and pulls you back. You don't even have time for a surprised exclamation, a gloved hand is immediately on your mouth. You are pulled into a storage room, the door slams shut. Before panic can really rise in you, you're spun around and looking into Rex's face. "What the hell-" He interrupts you, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you gently but firmly into his embrace. He has his arm and breastplate off, you can feel his warm body directly through the fabric of his Blacks. You can't help it, a heavy, drawn-out sigh crosses your lips. It feels like something is escaping from you, something very dark. It's clutching, even on its way out of you, tears painful grooves as it tries to desperately claw its way back in, as if it is alive and aware, trying to hold on to you.
A slight tremor goes through your body as your weakened state of mind fights back with the last of its strength and, with the support of Rex's embrace, finally driving the sinister monster away. At first, you're completely stiff, every muscle taut, then it feels like you're going to slump, but Rex holds you upright in his embrace. Your arms eventually wrap around him as well, your fingers digging into the fabric of his blacks at his back. You take long, deep breaths, taking in his closeness, the warmth of his body against yours. Tears well up in your eyes, you're not yet sure if it's relief or frustration, maybe both. He emphasizes his embrace and hums softly, "It's okay, don't hold back, let it out." You blink and the first tears fall, a quiet sob. Rex gently cradles you in his embrace. "Oh my darling, I've been gone so long, barely had time for you. I wish I could have been here sooner," he says in a husky voice. "Me too," you say softly, barely more than a trembling whisper. He coos tenderly as he turns gentle circles on your back with his hand, "But now I'm here for you. I have a few days off, finally. And I plan to spend every free second with you."
Another sob comes out of your throat, now you know, it's definitely relief. "Can we go home?" you ask him quietly. "Of course," he says immediately, explaining, "I just wanted to meet you here because I felt that you needed this moment, as soon as possible." You smile, even laugh softly, once again amazed at how empathetic this man can be. "You were absolutely right," you admit. Very slowly, he loosens the embrace, wipes the tears from your face, and finally holds your head gently between his hands to look at you. "You always seem to forget how much passion and fire you have in you, how much creativity. But I don't mind to keep reminding you“, he laughs softly, “I missed this sight, these eyes that know me so well,"
"I missed you too, more than I can put into words," you say and close your eyes, enjoying the warmth of his hands through the fabric of his gloves on your cheeks. When you open them again your eyes are full of fresh fire, there it is again the spark Rex fell in love with. The real you. He gives you strength, hope, love. He grins at you and you grin back. "There she is, my Love," he says with satisfaction.
The surging energy inside you tingles through your nerves, your imagination, your longings, your desire. Almost breathlessly, you say, "I want to go home with you, now. I want to cuddle with you, talk to you, make love to you for hours, just about anything you can imagine." The corner of Rex's mouth twitches upward saucily as he says, "I can imagine a lot of things, beautiful. You go ahead, I'll catch up with you as soon as I can". You're on your way home so fast, full of energy, fired up, full of anticipation. Rex is like the purest premium gasoline for your engine. The anticipation tingles under your skin, you suddenly have so much extra energy that you run up and down while waiting for him in your apartment.
His knock on the door is answered immediately, so quickly that he looks at you in surprise, but his surprise quickly turns into a smirk. "You must have been waiting for me," he says and steals a kiss, teasing, nibbling your lower lip, flicking his tongue playfully against yours, tickling the corner of your mouth before granting you a shit eating grin. Like a blissfully warm summer rain, the sensation of this touch shudders through your neural pathways, from the crown of your head to your toes and back up again, until suddenly it seems to bundle in the heat between your thighs. You feel his energy, his desire, he's as ravenous as you are. You feel his strong hands on your hips as he gently but firmly pushes you further and further toward the bedroom with each kiss. "I think", says Rex between two kisses, "once we go into that room, we're not getting out of there anytime soon". You giggle into the kiss, unable to help yourself. He leans his head back a bit and looks at you with a smirk and asks, "You don't mind, do you?" "Not at all"

I got you - chapter 1
So this is the first fanfic I've ever written. I've been obsessed with star wars for years and with clone wars for months now, especially with Rex and I've had this story in my head constantly for almost a year. I have never written so many words so fast in my life. Made a tumblr account just to read Rex fanfics lol, so hope I get everything right when posting. I already have a couple more chapters written and many other ideas so this will be a long story. I try to follow canon but it does deviate from it a bit, and I'm also mixing some legends and a lot of headcanons in too. The story will deal with mature themes, I'm not yet sure how sexually explicit it'll get, again, never written fanfic before so not sure if I'm capable of writing smut lol but there's a big possibility. Also not gonna be very action-heavy, I'm more focused on relationships with other characters. Echo and Fives will appear a lot too cause I love them.
A/n: adding an edit to mention that I have in fact managed to write some smut in later chapters, so I guess that makes this story 18+. The chapters that have smut will be properly marked as such.
Pairing: Rex x Jedi!ofc
Word count: 3.8k Warnings: heavy drinking; talk of injury; implied ptsd; implied emotional abuse
Next chapter
mesh'la - beautiful di'kut - idiot
~~~
Lexie looked at her face in the mirror, pleading with her mind to allow her to remember what happened, but she’s met with the same confusing, unclear images she’s been trying to piece together for the past few weeks, images of barren landscapes, white armour, red eyes and the look of disgust in them, and was she in someone’s arms?
She read the report, she knows the facts what happened on Geonosis, but for the life of her, she cannot remember herself being there. She cannot remember her master abandoning her, why would he just leave? She cannot remember how she supposedly took charge of the squad of clone troopers that Master al’Prani was supposed to lead, tearing through battled droids trying to reach Anakin and Obi-Wan. And she cannot remember how she got injured. Her hand reaches to the back of her skull, fingers tracing the long scar that still feels tender. It shouldn’t do, not anymore, not after the months she spent in a coma, but she could swear it still hurt.
It didn’t feel real at first, waking up in a medical facility on Coruscant with only med droids around her to relay the news of her injury and the coma she had been in since. She had woken in such a panic that she didn’t even realise how she used the Force to throw one of said droids against a wall, shattering it to pieces. It didn’t get any better when Mace Windu and Obi-Wan finally came to talk to her, telling her about the war that the Separatists had started and the clone army that the Jedi were now leading. It didn’t feel right at all, Jedi as generals, how is that being keepers of the peace? But the most horrible blow came when Obi-Wan slowly sat down on the chair next to her bed and took her hand in his, a sombre expression on his face.
“Alexis, there is something else you should know”, she could feel that the news he was about to relay had something to do with her master, however Lexie could not believe the words that followed. “Master Safir’al’Prani has left the Jedi Order during the battle of Geonosis.”
“No that’s… that’s not possible” she said, voice coarse after months of not being used. “He was just with me, we were on a ship heading to Geonosis… t-to aid you and Anakin, and… did you say during?”
“Yes. Once the two of you got to Geonosis,” master Windu interjected, “he refused to fight alongside the clone troopers. He considered them…” he paused, carefully choosing the words to use, “beneath him. You can read the report yourself, one of the clones in your squad provided a detailed account of the situation”. My squad? blurry images of white armour flashed in her mind but Lexie forced her attention to master Windu’s words. His voice was steady, no hint of emotion as he nonchalantly delivered the most devastating news for Lexie to hear and then handing a datapad towards the injured Padawan.
Lexie took the datapad master Windu offered her, but could not bring herself to look at the report just yet, feeling the anger and pain bubbling up inside of her and worried about keeping her composure in front of the two Jedi. “Thank you masters, I will look through it later, I… I’m a bit lightheaded at the moment.”
“Of course,” Obi-Wan said, sitting up from the chair. “We’ll let you rest now, gather your strength, we can discuss your situation at a later time”.
Your situation, the words ring in her head as she braided her bright red hair. She has a meeting with the Council that afternoon, after three weeks of physical therapy and psych evals she has no idea how she passed. Frustration increased as she once again could not hold onto the images that passed through her mind. What’s worse, she’s been feeling so disconnected from the Force, struggling to meditate, not that it ever came easy to her, and also use her abilities. Struggles she has kept from Obi-Wan, who has been checking in on her during her recovery. But now she had to face the Council, had to hide her struggles and insecurities from them, fearing disappointing them.
At least with Obi-Wan there, she hadn’t felt completely abandoned. Considering the amount of times Master al’Prani had dropped her on his head in the past few years, Obi-Wan was becoming more of a master to her than al’Prani ever was. Guess I shouldn’t be that surprised he just up and left me on a battlefield, she thought to herself, anger bubbling inside of her again. But she still was surprised, and angry, and confused, she tried to not blame herself but she couldn’t help feeling like it was somehow her fault, like if she hadn’t been such a disappointment to him, he would not have left. She shook her head trying to get the thoughts out then looked at the time. Shit! She was late.
Reaching the door to the Council room, Lexie stopped to catch her breath and to adjust her black robes. She didn’t wear this colour before but considered it appropriate these past couple of weeks, feeling as if she was almost in mourning. Taking three long breaths, she tried to clear her mind before entering the room.
“Waiting we have been, come, come”. All eyes followed her as she approached the centre. She looked around quickly, taking in the forms present in person or via hologram, then lowered her head and spoke as clear as she could, trying to hide the anxiety in her voice, “My apologies Master Yoda, I seem to have lost track of time.”
“How are you feeling, Alexis?”  Obi-Wan asked.
“Better, Master. I have been cleared by the medics, I am ready to return to my duties.” She replied, trying to sound confident. This is what I need right now, she thought, craving something to occupy her mind, some action so she could feel like herself again.
“Good to hear that is. A decision about your future this Council has made” Yoda continued. Lexie looked at him, waiting for her verdict. Her heart was pounding in her chest as all her concentration was focused on her mental walls, trying as hard as she could not to let the council members feels the anxiety within her.
“As you know,” Mace Windu begun talking, “former master al’Prani was reaching the end of your training. He believed there wasn’t much left for him to teach you”.
She tried to stop her face from grimacing at the words, remembering a similar sentence al’Prani had spoken to her months before Geonosis: “You seem intent on not learning any lesson I am trying to teach you”. Her mind got lost in the memory, anxiety slowly enveloping all her senses.
“…to consider what you have been through on Geonosis as your Trials and grant you the rank of Jedi Knight”. Those words snapped Lexie back to the present, did she hear him right? Did they really believe she was ready to be a Knight?  She opened her mouth to voice her concerns but immediately closed it. What was she going to do, argue with the Council’s decision? But how can they say I passed Trials that I don’t even remember? she thought, but then recalled how she kept that piece of information from them, not even confiding in Obi-Wan about her memory problems.
“We thought you would be more excited about this”, Obi-Wan’s voice stopped her rambling thoughts.
 “I-I am, of course. It’s just a lot to take in, and, if I am honest, I cannot stop feeling a little disappointed my master is not here to give me the… the happy news himself”, Lexie answered, cringing internally at how fast she spoke and how forced the words had sounded. “What happens now? Do I get assigned a battalion?” she asked after a short pause, hoping to move the subject along.
“At this time we cannot assign you your own battalion”, Master Windu spoke again, either not noticing or not wanting to deal with her conflicting emotions. “However, we believe the best course of action would be for you to join Anakin Skywalker as second commanding officer of the 501st. This arrangement could prove… mutually beneficial”.
“Mutually beneficial?”, she repeated, a slight frown showing on her face.
“Yes. You see, Anakin has been in command of this battalion for a few months now, so there’s a lot you could learn from him”, Obi-Wan interjected; she swore she could hear Master Windu scoff at that statement. “And in turn you could help… curve his impulsiveness, be a good influence on him. The battalion is due to return on world later today and Anakin is expecting you at the barracks first thing tomorrow”, Obi-Wan concluded, giving her a reassuring smile.
Lexie almost laughed at this. If they think I could be a good influence on anybody they don’t know me that well. She kept that thought to herself however, and instead bowed her head. “I understand. Thank you masters, I will do as instructed”.
On her way back to her room Lexie felt the anxiety creeping back in, filling every space of her mind. She was not ready for this, how could they think she was ready for this? Upon reaching her room she quickly peeled off her robes, the layers suddenly suffocating her. She sat down on the floor, trying to meditate, to ground herself in the moment, feeling the beginning of a panic attack. She didn’t think she had panic attacks before. But ever since waking up from her coma, they had been a common occurrence.
Meditating proved more effective this time, Lexie’s heartrate coming back to a more normal pace after a few minutes. Maker, I need a drink, she thought. She dug through her closet, looking for a more inconspicuous outfit, not wishing to attract much attention to herself when out. As a Jedi, she didn’t own many clothing items, however she did have a couple dresses and blouses that she would use on nights out, nights when she pretended to be a regular woman enjoying herself in a club or bar. For this occasion, though, she found a plain, dark-grey hooded jacket that she threw over the black tank top she was already wearing. She kept it unbuttoned, a moderate amount of cleavage still visible. She wasn’t going to specifically look for a hook-up tonight, but wasn’t necessarily opposed to anyone coming up to hit on her.
She went to her usual club, planning on only having one, maybe two drinks. However, the need to drown her insecurities got the better of her and five drinks later she was still at the bar, flirting with a Pantoran man who had just offered to buy her another drink.
She liked the confidence that being drunk would give her, she felt like a different person altogether, like a normal person who could comfortably flirt with other people. She wondered for a second if it was problematic that pretty much all of her hook-ups happened whilst she was drunk, or at least tipsy, but she tried to assure herself that she had always been in control, knowing her limit; hell, she had never gotten blackout drunk, never once vomited from alcohol, she just liked to have fun occasionally, to blow off steam.
Lexie was about to accept the man’s offer when she spotted a familiar Tholothian woman walking in the club. Shit, Gemma. The next second Lexie had pulled the hood over her head and was almost running to the exit, keeping her head down as the Tholothian made her way to a booth where she was greeted by loud, already drunk friends. Lexie exhaled a sigh of relief as she stepped in the chilly night air of Coruscant.
She could not deal with seeing Gemma right now, or with the apologies she would have to make. Guilt crept inside of her as she thought of how she basically ghosted the poor woman. I did say from the beginning that I cannot do more than casual, she tried pleading with her guilty conscience, but she knew she had not treated Gemma right.
Lexie realised she had been walking aimlessly for quite some time now, lost in her guilt, and stopped to look around confused as to where she was. The alcohol in her system was also not helping her in recognising her surroundings. She heard loud chatter ahead and followed it, coming face to face with what was, for her, an unusual sight.
She wasn’t used to the clones yet, she had seen a few troopers around, mainly the Coruscant guard or Commander Cody when he would come to retrieve Obi-Wan, but she hadn’t interacted with them at all during her recovery. But now, in front of a cantina she could see was named 79s, Lexie saw a bunch of them, in either officer uniform or in armor with various markings on it. She observed them for a little while, drunk, rowdy, joking around amongst themselves, they didn’t seem to act any different than other drunk men she had encountered in clubs before.
Alcohol-induced curiosity got the better of her and she decided to go inside the bar. I might as well get used to being among these men, she justified in her head. As she made her way to the entrance she pulled her hood down, gaining a low wolf-whistle that she ignored from one of the clones stood by the entrance.
The club was dimly lit and crowded, mainly with clones, but other sentients, mostly women as far as she could see, were mingling with the troopers. Lexie made her way to the bar, sitting down on a barstool as she ordered a cocktail. She looked around the space, taking in the different hairstyles or tattoos that the clones had, fascinated by their need for individuality. But they really were all individuals, she could feel them each through the Force, all their life signatures unique, something that really surprised her.
Lexie hadn’t thought about them much these past few weeks, being solely focused on her recovery. But being inside the bar right now, she was suddenly struck by how human they all were and, just as suddenly, the knowledge that the Republic had bred these sentient, living beings just to throw them into a war made her feel a pit inside her stomach.
Lexie was brought back from her unnerving thoughts by the realisation that she was being watched and turned her head slightly, just in time to notice two clones basically pushing a third clone towards herself. The clone stumbled and briefly met her eyes, before quickly averting them, embarrassment and nervousness seeping from his Force signature, followed by annoyance as he turned his head to look back at the men that threw him into this situation.
“H-Hi…”, he managed to say, looking back at her.
“Hello there”, Lexie replied, voice full of amusement. This should be fun, she thought to herself, studying the trooper in front of her. There wasn’t anything particular about his appearance, he had a standard haircut and no visible tattoos. The most striking aspect of his look was the handprint located on his chestplate, similar but not identical in colour to the other blue markings on his armor; blue, is that the 501st colour?
“I uhh… I’m Echo”, he said hesitantly.
“That’s an… interesting name. Is that short for echolocation, do you have really good hearing or something?”, Lexie replied teasingly.
“Umm, no, I wish”, he said with an embarrassed chuckle, “I-I used to have this tendency to repeat the orders we were given during training. My umm… my brothers used it to tease me and I guess it just stuck”.
“Well, it’s a pretty cool name regardless”, Lexie said, earning a shy smile from the trooper that was still stood stiffly next to her. “So what brings you over here, Echo?”, she gestured to the space between the two of them.
“I didn’t… it wasn’t really my idea, umm… my brothers keep insisting I need to… umm… talk to a woman. I’m sorry for disturbing you”, he said apologetically. Lexie looked over his shoulder to where the two clones were now leaning on the end of the bar, far enough that she didn’t think they could hear their conversation, but clearly still keeping an eye on their brother’s attempt at flirting.
One of the clones had a more striking appearance, his hair shaved, a big tattoo of the Republic crest adorned half his face and a big part of his skull. The other clone also had a facial tattoo, however smaller and on his right temple, showing the number five in Aurebesh; his appearance was otherwise that of a standard clone, minus a hint of a goatee on his chin.
“No worries, I was starting to get bored actually. And I assume that if I turn you away they’ll just find another woman to throw you at?” she asked half laughing.
“Most likely”, Echo answered with an embarrassed chuckle.
“Then you’d better join me”, Lexie said motioning to the empty barstool next to her. “I expect they’ll leave you alone if they believe you’re getting somewhere”.
Echo reluctantly took the seat next to Lexie, even more nervousness enveloping his Force signature. They sat in silence for a moment as Lexie took a few sips of her drink. Finally, Echo seemed to have gathered enough courage to continue their conversation.
  “I-I don’t want to give you the wrong idea if… umm… if you were looking for…”, he paused, having trouble choosing his words, “for something specific tonight”. His eyes could not meet hers, instead focusing on the drink that she was holding.
 Lexie let out a small laugh. “Don’t worry, honey, I was not going to sleep with you even if you had wanted it.”
 “That’s good”, Echo said with a small sight of relief. “I mean I-I don’t want to offend you, I’m just not…”, he paused, unsure if he should be admitting this out loud. “I’m just not really interested in this.”
 “This being women?”, she asked tentatively.
 “Women, men, anyone for that matter. I just don’t think I’m… attracted to anyone”, Echo replied, eyes turned back to her face, awaiting to see her reaction.
“There’s nothing wrong with it, you know that right? And your brothers shouldn’t force you to be someone you’re not just because they refuse to understand”, Lexie replied with a little indignation in her voice.
“No, I know, I’m not ashamed or anything”, he continued. “And they’re not… well I never actually tried to explain it to them. When Fives and I were at the outpost there was no need to talk about it and I managed to avoid it the last time we were on Coruscant. Fives was too busy finding someone for himself and didn’t pay much attention to me all four days of our leave. This is only the second time we’ve been here actually, Fives and I that is. Jesse has been with the 501st longer than we have.”
So they are with the 501st. “I’m gonna go ahead and assume Fives is the one with the tattoo of the number five”, Lexie remarked with mock deliberation, looking over Echo’s shoulder at the clone in question.
 “Yeah that is a good assumption”, he said with a small laugh. Lexie could feel he was more relaxed now and was surprised to discover she was actually enjoying his company. She’s never really had friendly conversations in bars before, usually only approaching people when she was interested in a possible hook-up, or on the occasions she was looking for information during a mission.
Echo talked a little about the shenanigans he and Fives used to get into back as cadets on Kamino, making Lexie genuinely laugh a couple of time. She could tell that the bond between the two men was special and couldn’t help feeling a little envious. Her thoughts briefly wondered towards her own family, Myria’s face appearing into her mind. No, stop that. She had to change the subject.
 “So, the famous 501st. What is that like?”, she asked after taking a sip of her drink.
“I don’t know if we’re that famous, but they’re good men, all of them. And our general is one of the best”, he answered proudly. “It’s weird though, the reason we’re back on Coruscant is so we can pick up a new general, which seems unnecessary. Fives said they’re probably sending some boring, stuck-up Jedi to babysit General Skywalker, the other Jedi must believe he’s too impulsive”.
  “Anakin impulsive? No way”, Lexie replied with sarcastic shock and a laugh. A sly smile crept on her face as she watched the confused expression Echo made. She stood and downed the last of her drink. “And I wouldn’t worry about the new general, she’s not that bad I think. But then again, I am biased”.
 Echo opened his mouth to say something but before he could get the words out Fives was at Lexie’s side, his hand sliding on her lower back.
“You’re not leaving, are you mesh’la?” he asked in a sweet voice.
 “Oh you’re a bold one”, she replied glancing at his arm and then back at his face, matching the tone of his voice. She was intrigued by the word he used to address her. Was that in Mando’a?
“What can I say, it breaks my heart to see a beautiful woman leave this place disappointed. Unlike this di’kut over here I could make it worth your while if you stayed a little longer”, he said as his head jerked towards Echo then lowered a little towards her.
 “Fives!”, Echo said in an urgent tone, “she’s a Jedi. I think.” His eyes met Lexie’s looking for confirmation, embarrassment once again engulfing him.
“Ten points for Echo”, she replied with a laugh. Fives’ hand immediately withdrew from her body, landing on the back of his neck, rubbing it nervously.
  “S-Sorry, Sir, I didn’t realise”, he said, concern easy to distinguish in his voice as he stepped away from her. Sir? Is that what everyone is gonna call me?
“No need to worry, honey”, she said, amused by the clone’s reaction. “And to answer your question, I am unfortunately leaving, have to be up early.” She noticed the other clone – Jesse, Echo said, right? – had approached them and she gave him a smile. She patted Echo twice on the shoulder and started making her way towards the exit, turning her head to loudly say “see you tomorrow, boys!”.
She laughed to herself as she heard Echo tell the others “I think that was our new general” before the distance snuffed out their voices and she went out the door into the cold night air.
After (Captain Rex x reader)
Tumblr media
I am trying so hard to get as much written before I get swamped with work again. For the @clonexreaderbingo. Enjoy!
Prompt: Fantasy
Warnings: gn reader, daydreaming, Rex is crushing hard, short
~~~~~~~~
It was a question that some of the troops asked from time to time.
What do you want to do when the war ends?
It almost felt silly to answer the question. The idea of an “after” felt so hard to think about when the war seemed never ending. But, it gave some of them hope; that they’d get an after.
Some of the boys would simply answer with a simple wish or job, very vague. While others would give detailed descriptions of what they wanted. A house on some outer rim planet, a kind partner, and a well meaning job were the most popular options.
The 501st would ask this question on particularly difficult campaigns. It was just to distract from all that was happening around them.
“I think I’ll just settle down with my girl,” Fives answered. “A nice house on Naboo and a quiet life. Would be a nice change of pace.”
“Sounds nice,” Jesse nodded. “I wanna see some more of the outer rim. Would be nice to visit planets without a battle.”
The men around the fire nodded in agreement.
“What about you Rex?” Jesse asked.
Rex shrugged in response. To his men, he never seemed to think about the future. When asked, he only responded with a shrug or a noncommittal hum.
But, Rex did think about it, a lot. He was only human.
In his fantasies, he had a farm on a quiet planet. Growing some crops to be sold or traded at market with a couple of animals. It would be far from any village and peaceful.
That was the after that he dreamed about.
But, then he met you.
As the head mechanic, Rex interacted with you quite often. He respected you as a leader and an equal. But, after a few months of knowing you, Rex started to get this tight feeling in his chest when he talked to you. He found himself staring at you from across the hanger, watching your skilled hands work. When he was talking to you, he would stare at your lips and completely forget to pay attention to what you were talking about. His brothers would tease him about it, never in your presence. Jesse was the most brutal with his teasing, knowing his Captain hated to be embarrassed.
Since his little crush on you started, Rex slowly began to fantasize about living his life after the war with you.
A small farm house, with just enough room for two.
Early mornings spent snuggling in bed. Warmth and intimacy unlike any other.
Working together, tending the fields. Or you would fix up a droid to make the work easier. You would check on him, making sure he took breaks.
He wanted the two of you to go to the market together. It would be fun sampling food and watching the children play.
He imagined that you would watch the sunset together from the porch, a drink in his hands.
It would be peaceful.
Maybe a little too peaceful.
Rex was shocked when his daydreams changed again. This time there was a crib in a spare room. A bright smile on your face as you leaned over it, cooing at the tiny infant fussing there. He’d never imagined something like that. Holding a small baby close to his chest while the person he loved tiredly gave him a kiss.
Maybe, just maybe, he had more than a crush.

𝓓𝓮𝓪𝓻 𝓓𝓲𝓪𝓻𝔂..
Pt2. Captain Rex x F!Reader x Fives What happens when two of the men you admire suddenly begin to show just how interested they are in you, days after your secret diary goes missing? Word Count: 3514 Warnings: Edited but most likely has some grammar mistakes, reader is scared of water. A/N: Ugh this took my poor little brain too long to write but it's here now and I'm very proud <33
Tumblr media
The rhythmic buzzing of cicadas paired with the summer heat and sunbathing on the beach was the perfect situation to find yourself in. The negotiations had gone smoothly, and your squad was permitted a spontaneous shore leave.
Navy blue waves licked lazily at the sand; the water contrastingly cold to the desert-like temperatures of the beach. A cool breeze accompanied the waves, providing a semblance of comfort as it danced with tall, sparse strands of wild grass.
You were seated on a sunbed, just beneath the dark shadow of an umbrella, enjoying the distant echoes of laughter from your squad. It was extremely uncommon for them to enjoy anything but the popular bar, 79s, on their days off.
You had to bargain with the Jedi council for a solid half an hour before Master Windu had finally given you the nod of approval.
Now, Rex reaped the benefits of shore leave in the form of a nap in the sun. You had made sure to apply a kriff ton of sun cream onto his back and shoulders and neck before he had fallen asleep, a mumbled 'thank you' rolling off the tip of his tongue as his eyes became droopy.
He was severely sleep deprived; always being assigned to Skywalker's side rather than yours. It wasn't that he didn't like Master Skywalker, it's just his missions and plans were always reckless and exhausting, and they ended with a few too many casualties.
Of course, that was always inevitable, and Rex did his best not to linger on the fallen, but it didn't always come to him easily.
But with you, he could rest assured.
With you, he could relax under the warm sun, feel the burning sand, and enjoy the comfort of seaside waves.
His caring nature also ensured that everyone would be provided for whilst he was asleep. Bringing extra sun-cream, a cooler filled to the brim with water bottles and ice lollies, and extra towels as well as beach balls.
Where did he get the credits from?
Well, that was a code that nobody could decipher.
Nevertheless, there you were, relaxing with your beloved Captain. Fives had dragged most of the squad into the waves, insisting that they play volleyball. He had tried to take you too, but your reluctance and uncertainty deterred him.
He had waved you off with a 'Watch me, General' and a wink before he engaged in a series of games of clumsy water volleyball.
Since they'd undergone ARC Trooper training, it became more uncommon for Echo and Fives to join the 501st on longer campaigns.
Each time they were reunited, Fives would glance to Echo with a small smile. And now, he was busy wrestling with Hardcase in the shallow parts of the water, laughter escaping the two as Echo hit the ball into the air.
A series of hoorays and pats on the back erupted as the ball hit the water with a splash.
One score for Echo's team.
You were content with watching from the side lines, if you remained far from the water.
If you still had your diary on you, you'd probably busy yourself writing down the details of this day, so the memory could continue to live on long after the war was over.
But just a few days prior it went missing. You thought you misplaced it and ransacked your entire quarters for it. By the time Rex had knocked on your door, nothing was in its' correct spot. Crumpled bedsheets, swinging closet doors and a chair in the middle of the room as you had searched under your desk.
He wanted to question your panicked state, but as soon as the words 'Mission' and 'Jedi Council' were said, you had put a halt to your search mission.
Rex hadn't tried to ask since.
But now, forced to sit by idly, you were mesmerised by the beauty of none other than Fives himself. He was an ARC Trooper for a reason. His shoulders were broad, his waist slim and his thighs - thick and strong and defined from hours of battle and constant training. His tan skin was wet with salty sweat and even saltier water, and if one were to squint hard enough, they could see droplets running down the side of his neck.
You often found yourself feeling grateful to Jango Fett for having such fine genes.
As if reading your mind, Fives decided to stretch, and in the process flexed his biceps. How big were they?
Was it just you or did it get twenty degrees hotter?
His head slowly turned, and for a moment, you made eye contact. It was quick, but it was still enough to have your heart racing. A smirk stretched across his lips as he caught sight of your blooming blush.
The moment was cut short as Jesse splashed salty water right in his face. You didn't even get a chance to process the expression on his face, the water having wiped it away, as a surprised yelp escaped Fives.
His hand flew to his face, a guttural groan leaving his lips as he swore. His form was hunched over, his hand wiping at his eye.
Before you knew it, you were up and running towards the water, your sunbed abandoned and dusty in your wake.
"Fives?!"
His attention snapped to you at the sound of your voice.
A gasp left your lips.
His eye. The usually tawny skin surrounding his eye had now gained in darker colour, the area a faint red under the sunlight. Tiny, crimson vessels coated his sclera, reaching with thin, curly tendons towards his iris.
Just what was in that water? Surely it shouldn't be this bad.
Jesse was quick to utter apologies, his mouth cast into a downturned smile.
"Jesse it's fine," Fives insisted, "It's nothing." He continued, rubbing at his eye, the corners of his lips fighting an oncoming scowl. His attention quickly diverted from Jesse, focusing on you just as your feet reached the water.
Your body stuttered, your movements faltering as you glanced down at the waves.
Fives eyed you wearily, noticing the hesitation plastered all over your features.
But then in a flash, the water was already hitting your knees, lazily crashing against your waist as you progressed further. Goosebumps rose all over your body, visible under the blaring sun.
Your stomach twisted into a ball of thread, bile rising in your throat. You squeezed the water bottle and towel in your hands, then proceeded to raise your arms into the air like a cheering fan.
The water was now waist-deep, splashing against your torso and swaying your body back and forth.
Pieces of broken pebbles dug into the balls of your feet, and you had to supress the urge to scream when a floating piece of seaweed tickled at your ankles.
A small wheeze left your lips though, and as you reached Fives and looked up, you noticed the concerned expression on Jesse’s face. Was it for Fives or for you? You couldn’t quite tell.
"Let me see." You requested, placing your busy hands on top of Fives’ shoulders.
"General, I'm fine. It's just a bit of water." Fives winced as he attempted an eyeroll, his hands having wrapped around your wrists.
He failed to notice the brief flash of panic in your eyes or the tension in your jaw as the water splashed onto your chest.
"Just a bit of... Water?" You repeated, swallowing harshly. Tugging your hands from his hold, you looked back up at him. "You look like you’re on some hard spice, Trooper. We’ll get your eye rinsed; we don’t know just how safe the water is."
The men behind him had gone awfully quiet, Fives noted as he silently pleaded with you. His eyes searched yours, his head tilting just the slightest. He wasn't a fan of silence, at least not when it came from his squad mates. And he knew all to well that they were watching like hawks, supressing their laughter.
However, as you stood there looking up at him, he couldn’t help but allow his resolve to crumble just a tiny bit. Who could say no to those sweet puppy eyes? Maybe Echo. Most definitely not Fives.
"Alright, lead the way." He finally let up, heaving a sigh. His eye was stinging a bit too much and it’s not like he minded the extra attention from you.
A snicker left one of the men behind you, and Fives was quick to whip his head around, motioning for them to ‘zip it’.
"General?"
"Fives?" You pursed your lips as you looked up at him, though you didn't last long as your gaze faltered, focusing on your primary target, the sunbed. You wouldn’t be rinsing his eye on the sand; it was too hot, and it felt like walking on lava rocks.
“Is it that bad? Or did you just want me all for yourself?” He asked, nudging your side with his elbow.
Wordlessly, you pushed him onto your sunbed.
“Aggressive, I can work with that.”
“Shut it.” You laughed out, shaking your head.
By that point, Rex had slowly begun waking up, rubbing tiredly at his eyes.
A confused hum left his lips as he noticed the state of your clothes. They were wet. Soaking wet, in fact.
"General?" His voice was deeper than normal, more guttural as he was recovering from his nap. "Why are you...Wet?"
“No reason, Captain.” You shrugged your shoulders with a wink.
Rex looked to Fives, giving him a confused look. He sat up in his sunbed, crossing his legs and rubbing his face. “There’s a first time for everything, I guess.”
“First time? First time for what?”
“Oh? Didn’t you know? Our General- “
“Rex.” The way his name rolled off the tip of your tongue had shivers running down his spine. It carried authority and a warning, but the captain was feeling quite daring. His chest puffed up, his whole demeanour changing. This wasn’t your sweet Captain Rex, this was cheeky Cadet Rex, ready to tell the most embarrassing of stories to his brother.
He looked over to Fives, leaning back on his hands.
“Our General over here is terrified of water.” He mused, recalling a specific memory, “On one of our first missions together, we were sent to a swampy planet. The General had us all fooled at first,” He paused, snickering at the displeased expression on your face, “The second a frog swam by, she was screaming and jumping into my arms. Jesse almost blasted the poor thing to bits!”
“Rex!” You exclaimed, throwing the damp rug at him, “You promised not to tell anyone!”
Rex sputtered as the cloth hit him square in the face, launching it into the air in retaliation. “Fives isn’t just anyone! Am I right or am I right?”
Fives looked between the two of you, his brows raised in shock and his eye looking much better.
“General? I’m not just anyone, I’m your favourite ARC Trooper!” He shook his head, pressing a hand to his chest. “I can’t believe you!”
Before you could deny his words or assure him, Rex was already stood by you.
“See General? You hurt his feelings.”
“N- No I didn’t! Fives you are my favourite, just don’t tell anyone, alright?” You pleaded, attempting your best puppy eyes yet. Your attempts faltered as he shook his head, feigning a hurt look.
“I’m not sure, General. You’ll have to make it up to me somehow,” He paused, exchanging mysterious looks with Rex.
“How can I make it up to you?”
“Oh I don’t know.. I’ll have to get back to you on that.” He retorted, pouting at you. Sometimes you forgot just how childish the man could be. You clutched the empty water bottle in your hand, readying it as your next weapon for Rex.
Turning towards him, a fake scowl twisted your expression.
“Don’t look at me like that, General, it’s a waste of a pretty face.” He quickly said, shielding his face as you raised the water bottle. Before it could leave your hands voluntarily though, a pair of arms wrapped around your waist.
“H- Huh?” A gasp left your lips as your body was swiftly rotated and slung over Fives’ shoulder like a sack of rations. That man really harboured more strength in those biceps than you knew. “Fives? What are you doing?”
“I’m having you repay me! Starting now!” He exclaimed and began moving. Rex moved to his side, keeping in step with Fives. Your eyes widened as the sunbed slowly moved further and further, becoming a distant promise of safety and comfort as salty waves made contact with Fives’ feet.
“Fives! L- Let me go! Please!” Your voice was reaching new peaks, rising higher and higher as you began kicking your legs. “I- I can’t swim!” You continued, lightly hitting his back.
His steps began to slow. You held your breath, leaning your head as far from the water as possible.
“You can’t swim? Are you serious or are you bullshitting me, General?” He asked, looking towards Rex, who only gave him a shrug of his shoulders.
“I promise! Please, please, please don’t go any further.” You pleaded once more, looking over to Rex too. Your hands were clasped together, as if you were praying to the two men. He exchanged glances with Fives, wordlessly communicating.
Rex looked over to you, pursing his lips.
“What’s holding y’guys up?” Hardcase shouted, coming closer and closer. “And since when did the General go into water that isn’t a part of her refresher?” He asked, coming to a stop with the three of you.
“Hardcase! You know I can’t swim! Help me, please!” You began kicking your feet again, leaning your head to the side. Your hands pushed against Fives’ back, attempting to heave yourself off.
His grip on you only tightened, and a squeak was forced from your chest as his palm squeezed your thigh.
“The General is a worse swimmer than me! At her level she isn’t even a swimmer, she’s a sinker!” He exclaimed, pointing to himself, Fives’ shoulders shook as a small laugh escaped him. You could feel the blood rushing to your cheeks, setting your skin aflame.
“Fine, I’ll let you go, but only ‘cause I trust Hardcase.” His voice was gruff as he lifted your body, slowly placing you in the water. Goosebumps attacked your skin once more, but this time from the chilling cold that encased you. Looking up, Fives wore a grin that challenged that of the cheshire cat. “You should see yourself, General. You look like an angry loth cat.” He said, pinching your cheek with one hand as the other rested on your waist, his hold firm but gentle, his thumb caressing your waist in small, centred circles.
Swatting his hand away, you looked back down to the water. It rested just below your hips but would venture higher up as the waves moved back and forth.
“D’you wanna go further?” Fives asked, his voice much closer now. Looking around, you noticed that Rex and the others had moved further into the water, where it now reached their chests.
Shaking your head, you turned back to Fives. “I can’t swim, plus I don’t have the same height advantage as you,” You paused, pointing to the others, “I’d be under water where they are now.”
A soft chuckle escaped his lips, crows’ feet tugging at the outer corners of his eyes. Your hands rose to his chest, steadying yourself as a rogue wave lifted your feet off the ground.
“C’mon, you can sit on my shoulders? I’m sure the others would be more than happy to have you around.” He asked, giving your waist a faint squeeze.
You took a moment to think over his proposition. Sure, being on his shoulders would mean you get to, mostly, stay out of the water. But what if you fell off? You cringed at the thought of water invading your nose, burning your windpipe and choking you from the inside out.
“I- I don’t know…” You paused.
Slowly, you looked up, your breath hitching in your throat. He was already watching you, admiring the tiny expressions you made as you watched his brothers. There was this smitten look resting across his face, as if you were the prettiest little thing he’s ever seen.
His face was so close, his body slightly brushing against your own. His scent invaded your senses, so much so you could almost taste it on the tip of your tongue.
The sunlight reflected in his eyes, outlining the different shapes and shades as if you were looking into a kaleidoscope. His irises had this gorgeous colour of warm honey, and they sparkled like a pair of amber crystals under the soft sunrays.
His skin glowed under the warmth, the rich olive colour becoming tanner the longer he sat outside of his armour, making Fives look healthier and happier. All of the men, in fact. Though their armour kept them safe and sound, you couldn’t help but marvel at the sight of them. They were in their zone.
Fives’ hand moved up to your face, his eyes concentrated on a stray piece of hair. The soft smile kept playing at his lips, never fully going but never fully staying.
There was a tension in his jaw, however, as his fingers toyed with your hair. It was like he was holding something back.
He moved the strand away, gently tucking it behind your ear, as best as it would go anyway.
“You’re gorgeous, cyar’ika.” His words came out as a whispered prayer, his gaze so tender and loving as he caressed your cheek with his knuckles.
It was as if your brain short-circuited again; his words dropped on you like a heavy boulder, so sudden, and yet your heartbeat was now racing a thousand miles per hour. Your breath was caught in your throat, and your mouth suddenly felt dry. Was this normal? Were you panicking or were you blushing? Were you going crazy? What was happening?
“F- Fives…” You whispered, your grip on his chest tightening. You never expected those words to come from him, or anyone at all. They weren’t meant for you. But if so, why did they make you so happy? So ecstatic and why did he make you swoon so hard?
He leaned his face a tad closer, just enough for you to feel his breath fanning over your lips.
You could feel his warmth, it was comparable to the sun itself. It rode in your veins, it had your blood bubbling up in excitement the longer he looked at you. You were just a small planet orbiting his sun, being pulled in closer and closer until all you could feel was the heat and the burn of him.
His tongue darted out to lick at his bottom lip, ridding it of dryness and discomfort.
But that small action had you going wild, feral even.
In that split moment, your gaze flickered to his lips. For a man who spent the majority of his life on a battlefield, his lips sure looked plump and made just for kissing.
It was like you were gravitating towards him, like a comet curve-balling around his planet, entangling around his soul and burning brightly at each twist and pull. His hold on you had your legs melting, as if you were nothing but a shard of ice, being thawed away at by his warm touch and sweetly whispered nothings.
His hand tilted your jaw, just enough for your lips to rest an inch from his. Any closer, and you’d be kissing, melting into one another.
Before either of you could do more, say more, the distant voice of Hardcase called out to you.
“Are you two comin’ or what?!” He shouted, cupping his mouth with both hands.
You jolted in your spot, effectively snapping out of whatever spell the man before you had cast on you. Clearly, he had been put under a spell too as his hands retracted and his posture stiffened.
“We’re on our way!” He shouted back, waving Hardcase off. His attention quickly returned to you, but the spell was now gone.
A lump formed in your throat, and you swallowed it down with struggle.
Uncertainty and fear tugged at your heartstrings, and Fives knew exactly what that meant.
“G- General-“
“I need to go.” Your voice was meek and shallow as you retracted from his touch, as if he left your skin with painful burns and sears wherever his fingertips touched. “Alone.” You continued, placing a hesitant palm on his chest as Fives attempted to follow you.
This couldn’t be happening.
With your back turned to him and your figure disappearing into the distance, Fives couldn’t help but curse under his breath. His lips slightly agape, he stood in the same spot you left him in just moments ago.
How could he have ruined everything in such a short amount of time?

Push & Pull
Pairing: Captain Rex x Jedi! Reader
Word Count: 1.5k
Genre: Angst (i’m sorry)
Warnings: there’s a bit of a makeout scene in the beginning, the rest I can’t give away without spoiling the story so be warned
A/N: It really was supposed to be fluffy at first but... it was too tempting. I based the Title off a KARD song. Also if the consensus demands it I’ll write the part two I’ve been planning for this. Feedback is really appreciated for this! I worked hard on it and I’m actually quite proud of it!
Summary: What happens when the reality of your secret relationship comes crashing in, and the fear peaks out from amongst the rubble.
AKA You push him away and he tries to pull you back in.
Tumblr media
You could taste the desire littered across his tongue as you both consumed each other. His hands grabbed at the nape of your neck desperate to pull you closer to him than what was physically possible. You were clinging on to each breath as your mouths moved as one, refusing to let the other go. He was your safety net, the one thing you felt too selfish to ever let go of, even if it meant taking him down with you. Not that the galaxy would ever let you two find peace. It was tumultuous and violent, and there was no escape, not for any single inhabitant. But for the two of you, there was no hope. Your little secret was doomed to explode from the start.
He was a soldier and you a Jedi. There were countless things wrong with whatever this was, yet you could never seem to get enough, until now. If attachment and love were forbidden, then how was it so easy to fall into this in the first place? Especially when the man in front of you looked to be carved by the stars himself. Was this supposed to be what temptation was like? Painful and gut-wrenching but deliciously so. And how were you supposed to let him go?
“Mesh’la,” he breathes out. Effortlessly, like everything else he does. “I think I lost you back there. I only noticed because it’s kind of hard to make out with a durasteel wall.” You chuckled, looking into the warm irises of the man you’ve grown to love. It broke you, seeing that look of pure adoration in his eyes because you knew that in a matter of time, all you would see is misery within them. You tried to keep every bit of fear you had inside, instead choosing to relish in the unbridled happiness Rex brought you, but there is only so much a person can take before the dam breaks, and it finally did. A lone tear sinks down your cheek accompanied by a sniffle, the only signs you’re willing to let peak through, but it’s plenty enough to worry your beloved Captain. His calloused hands moved to hold your face and wipe the evidence of your turmoil.
“Cyare, talk to me. What’s going on inside that pretty little head of yours?” He moved to press a chaste kiss to your temple, and you couldn’t hold it in anymore. A cascade of sobs echoed across your quarters accompanied by soft hushes and words of encouragement, as he held you tight to his chest, rubbing circles into your hip bone.
“I’m sorry,” was all you could muster out in between your sobs, trying desperately to regulate your breathing.
“For what?” He asked, his gaze continuing to bore holes in yours, the concern ebbing off him in waves.
“For loving you,” you choke out. You were sure he wasn’t able to make any of it out between heaving, sobs, and snot-filled sniffles. But judging by the silence and lack of movement in the room, he was a bit shocked by your confession.
The silence that passed was agony as you watched those gears turn in his head as he was trying to make sense of it all. You watched as the facade of this hardened man started to crack and crumble above you. He was slowly starting to understand the connotation of your words and where this conversation was headed.
“Why?” He asked finally letting out that agonizing breath you had assumed he had been holding in.
“I just-” You took a breath, it coming out far shakier than you would’ve liked, “I can’t do this to you. Not anymore. I have been incredibly selfish with your feelings, knowing of the consequences that are destined for us. You deserve so much more than that.”
He was still frozen in his place, so you just decided to continue. “I’m sorry Rex. There’s not much hope for either of us with the lives we have led. I love you.” You stared at the stars countless nights, wondering, dreaming of this moment. The moment you finally put it all on the line and told him you loved him. But the last option to ever grace your thoughts was that you told him while you were doing this. You expected the moment to be filled with kisses and warm hugs and the only feeling that could be felt was love. Not this. “But that’s not enough. That will never be enough when this, us, is bound to break and shatter in all the worst ways possible.”
“And how is that guaranteed in your eyes? With the way you are talking, it sounds like we have no choice but to surrender to it. To run away and cower in fear. But how do we know for sure things are going to blow up in our faces? Shouldn’t we be allowed to be happy?” You were angry. Not at him, but at all this destruction, death, and violence that promises no reprieve, and yet he still chooses to hold on to the hope that one day it will. That one day this war will be over. When you know that there’s no way the galaxy could ever find peace.
“Because Rex” You screamed, your heart pouring itself out through your voice. “You are a Captain in the Grand Army of the Republic and I am a Knight of the Jedi Order. Someone catches one whiff of us and you’re court-martialed and I’m removed from the order. I could possibly live with that, but the punishment for you is not something I could live with. Rex, they would kill you.”
“You don’t know that,” he sighed.
“But I do, which is why I know we can’t do this anymore. Not with a cost this high,” you let out one last shaky sigh before you moved to the door. Finalizing your decision in ending your happiness and going back to the shell you once were, by command of the Jedi.
“You can’t leave,” he gritted out through barred teeth, “You made me a promise when you first came to our command. That we are a team.” He shot up from his position on shaky legs, all of his emotions evident in his stance, “And that we get through things together. You can’t make this decision on your own. You promised.” It was hard to catch that last bit, it was barely a whisper.
“This is the only decision to make, can’t you see Rex? We have no other choice.” You saw it. For the first time ever, your hardened but warm and loving Captain finally broke. Relinquishing the control he’s tried desperately to cling to since his inception, a tear falls down his cheeks. Something you’ve never seen before and it breaks your heart even more.
“What I see is you being selfish!” Those words hit you like a gut punch because he was right. You were being selfish. But it was all you could do to keep the one thing that makes you feel human, safe. You were taught nearly your whole life to avoid emotions and attachments, and because of it you nearly functioned like a droid. Your only focus was to do what they told you to. Then Rex came along and gave you a reason to fight, to feel, to exist. And the idea of losing him in this endless battle of torment was something you couldn’t stomach.
“I’m not a droid, Cyare. I make my own decisions, you can’t make them for me.” He was yelling now, even though his volume wasn’t ridiculously loud, avoiding unnecessary attention. It was still his choice of words and how he said them that made your knees buckle. There was an overwhelming feeling to fall to the ground and melt but you needed to be strong and get out of this, for both your sakes.
“I have never once compared you to that of a droid. You are fully capable, but I can’t play games with your life, Rex. You are the most important thing in my life.” You let out a sob, one of many since this debacle began, but one that fully conveyed just what you were feeling at that moment.
“Please, just stay. We can talk this through, what you’re feeling. We don’t have to leave it like this.” He put your face in his hands again, kissing you while he still shook in fear. One that was a silent beg, to not let go.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, tears falling down your cheeks, “I don’t know how.” You opened the door knowing that once you take this step there was no coming back, and took one last look at the man who meant everything to you.
“Please,” he cried. And with that, you left. Abandoning the only bit of freedom you ever had.

One Last Order, Part 1
This is right.
You kept repeating that to yourself. Over and over in your mind until you thought you could believe it.
This wasn’t the first time your arms dealing had gotten on the imperial radar. “Subversive trading” was you had called it when you first established contact with a local cell.
But it was the first time that Erie, your main point of contact, pulled you out and didn’t relocate you.
That’s what felt so wrong — the fact that you were here, in the base that acted as headquarters for the Rebel Alliance,and not still out there. You could still be out there. Stealing from the Empire right under its nose, redistributing resources and passing along the best findings to various rebel efforts. Even helping the occasional force sensitive pass unseen along your stop on the Path.
“Scowl any harder and you’ll scare everyone away.”
Erie had a brow raised, her teasing tone managing to still keep its edge as she turned to give you her full attention now that you were safely inside. Your sigh did little to relieve your worries, but you used the exhale to release some of the tension in your stance.
“I just don’t-”
“No, you don’t. That’s the point,” she was firm without being harsh as she cut off your well-worn argument. “No one in the field ever has the full picture for everyone’s safety. You’re just going to have to trust me when I say this was our only option. Otherwise, you’d be staring at the inside of an imperial cell sooner rather than later. And you’ve grown on me too much to be left out there on your own.”
A not so small seed of affection squeezed at your scarred heart and you let the corner of your mouth tilt in the smallest smile.
“Fine. Just … Just put me to work soon, okay? I want to be useful.”
“Oh, honey!” Erie barked, her sharp laugh tinged with just enough steel to make you almost regret your request. “Don’t you worry. We’ll run you ragged soon enough. For now, though, there’s not much that needs doing that isn’t already getting done. You’re allowed to take a night to adjust.”
She passed you a slip of flimsy with a rough map of the base on it. Several of the rooms were circled with descriptions.
“If I knew you were short on datapads, I’d have lifted a few before leaving. Kriff, the Rebellion must be struggling more than I realized.” You teased, bringing the page closer to your face to make out the poor writing.
“Har har. You’re a riot. That’s for safety too, smartass. Datapads can be sliced.”
Erie took your wrist in her hand to bring the page between you and pointed to a circled room on the left. Your bunk. Private for now, but she warned that would likely change soon. Your eyes tracked the path on the page as you gave a nod. “Got it. I’m going to start unpacking. Wanna help?”
“I would, but I’m needed at a mission debrief in a few.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll see you later, then.”
“Definitely. I’ll grab you before dinner and introduce you to everyone.” She answered with a brilliant smile. “Ya know, there are a couple of real cuties here you should get to know.”
Your laugh came out easy enough — as easy as it should in a lighthearted conversation with a friend. But it was a little thing, all breath and tinged with bitterness. “Oh no, I’m far too old for that nonsense.”
“You’re not. And they’re going to come sniffing even without my interference.” Erie’s eyes swept down your figure pointedly.
You know she means well, but you can’t help that the thought of anyone looking at you that way again — the way he had — makes your breath catch in your throat. It threatened to choke you.
“I’m right and I’m not arguing this.” You force a lightness into your tone you don’t feel and grab for your bags before she can respond. “Have fun at your debrief!” You call over your shoulder, heading down the hall to your quarters.
Squeezing the strap in your hand, you took a deep breath, allowing the feel of the leather against your palm and the air expanding your lungs to ground you. It stopped you from spiraling, but it didn’t stop the heat from spreading across your cheeks.
It was embarrassing, after all. You could admit that objectively. It’s been years since he left. You understood his decision then, and you understood it now. You never actually agreed with him. But you remember his eyes when he gave you that last order, begging you to listen. And you couldn’t bear to tell him no.
And so he left. Left to go do whatever it was he felt he needed.
And left you alone.
Back then, you wanted to hate him, to burn away the phantom touch of his hands on your skin, to gnash your teeth at the whisper of his name and to curse the day he came into your life.
But even as the grief permeated your every cell, moving from your mind to morph into a physical shroud that mutated your body in its image, you couldn’t find the strength to hate him.
It wouldn’t have helped anyway. It would have only calcified your pain into a tool to hurt others.
So you let the years slip by, shrinking your world into something that you could manage — your apartment, the odd jobs you took to keep yourself fed — all the while shrinking your heart and closing it off. The numbness prickled at your consciousness, but you found it more bearable than the pain of loneliness.
Of wanting him and no one and nothing else.
That is, until you got a job stocking shelves at a mechanic’s shop. A boy came in one day looking for a new filter for his air circulation system. While your boss grumbled about the difficulty of procuring pre-imperial parts, you caught sight of the insignia on the inside of the boy’s jacket as he moved to grab a handful of credits.
For the first time in longer than you’d care to say, determination had flooded your veins. You couldn’t change the past. You couldn’t walk by his side.But you could help this boy, this new movement in their fight for their better tomorrow.
And maybe, even distantly, it would help him, too.
You still didn’t let too many people get close. It’s easier this way, you had rationalized. Easier to lie. To steal. To disappear in the dead of night and start your operations over on a new planet whenever Erie tipped you off to an upcoming raid.
Now, though, as part of the Rebellion proper, you’d likely find safe distance harder to maintain.
It hadn’t been too hard to relearn the rhythm of banter between friends when you opened up to Erie. Hopefully, that will be true for the others you meet. And it won’t be too hard to scoff off attempts by any young guns set on impressing you … if Erie was to be believed about their intentions, anyway. You had serious doubts considering you were at least a decade older than most of the contacts you’ve met.
What would be hard is if you saw any of them. You knew a few had joined the ranks, offering their expertise and lifetime of training to the cause. Of course some would. It’s in their DNA. It’s all they’ve known.
It isn’t fair to them, but you weren’t sure you could handle seeing their face. His face.
You still loved him. No matter how small you made your world, made yourself, you couldn’t change just how thoroughly he claimed your heart. Even now, with Erie’s comment rattling in your brain, you could feel your stomach gurgling, pushing you to pause as you come to the next turn.
Another deep breath. In. Out.
Pulling your shoulders back, you start again … only to run into what feels like a wall when you face makes contact with hard duraplast.
Oh, kriff.
“Dank ferrik! Watch where yer going!”
The growl was unfamiliar, the tone harsher than anything he ever directed at you. But your body reacted to that voice before you could gather a rational thought. Heat surged through your blood even as cold fear sent your stomach into a freefall.
“S-sorry.” Your eyes focused on his jaw, unwilling to look higher until you caught a glimpse of a small scar on his neck.
He didn’t have that.
Tilting your head back, you finally met the man’s gaze. Luck was on your side as your eyes traced over the raised scar bisecting one eye, the cybernetic beneath analyzing you.
He didn’t have that, either.
Wolffe. You had met, briefly, when you joined the boys at 79’s a lifetime ago. But it was just the once, and if luck continued smiling on you, he wouldn’t remember a thing.
“I’m, uh, new. I was just focusing on finding my way and wasn’t paying attention to much else. Sorry about that,” you said, forcing a small smile to ease the tension. From what you remember hearing among the guys, there wasn’t much that could ease the overwhelming aura of Commander Wolffe. But hey, it couldn’t hurt to try.
“Better learn to multitask, then.”
You tried to ignore the way his eyes narrowed at you. “Sure thing. Sorry again. See you around.” The words tripped off your tongue with less grace than your feet as you clumsily slipped past the clone commander to continue down the hall.
You could feel his intense glare burning your back all the way to your room.
*****************
Callused fingers slid back and forth across his forehead in a vain attempt to alleviate his headache. The mission had been a success, technically. It still took all his self control not to drill the crew of the Ghost for their sloppiness.
They were a solid bunch, but by the Maker they made things needlessly difficult. The debrief took far longer than necessary just cataloging all the supplies that didn’t make it home. It almost — almost — made him nostalgic for his more regimented days in the GAR.
He did miss assigning latrine duty to mouthy troopers. Too bad he enjoyed the freedom of the rebellion a little more.
Leaving the briefing room, Rex strode down the hall toward the mess, heavy footsteps rebounding down the durasteel as he checked his comm. Curiously, it had gone off during his meeting. Everyone who had his frequency was either in the room with him or had just returned and was settling in for their respective post-mission routines.
His curiosity only grew upon seeing the culprit was Wolffe. His brother never interrupted a meeting, the GAR indoctrination still proving pervasive in his mind. Slightly worried and even more curious, Rex hit the redial button.
“Finally,” Wolffe grumbled through the comm as his likeness was projected above Rex’s wrist.
“Remind me never to rely on you for patience, vod,” he teased, unable to resist riling up his brother even more. “What’s up?”
“New meat on base. I bumped into her earlier.”
“Knock it off,” Rex snapped. His small frustration from earlier immediately flared into pissed off. Wolffe knew better. “My answer is still no.”
“I have a feeling that’s gonna change this time.”
Rex’s nostrils flared and he could feel his anger spreading, tensing his muscles as if he were in the heat of battle. “Never.”
And he meant it. It didn’t help and never would.
He couldn’t regret the path he took. He had been the difference between life and death for so many brothers … and so many others since then. But with every breath he regretted what he had done to you. That last look you had given him still cut deep. Too deep to ever heal.
“When are you gonna learn that your ori’vod is always right?” The grin that curled over Wolffe’s face gave new meaning to the term wolfish.
Rex was about to tell him to shove it, but Wolffe beat him to it, silencing him with just two words.
“It’s her.”
*****************
Releasing one last breath, you sunk into the mattress beneath you, finally feeling the tension leech from your limbs.
Seeing Wolffe had shaken you, and you allowed yourself a few minutes to fall apart in the privacy of your room. You let the sting of what was lost crest over you. It passed through at a steady pace, neither rushing nor lingering, giving you time to refocus and recenter. Each inhale pushing it to the edges of your body, each exhale banishing it to the fringes of your mind. For now.
Roughly passing your palms over your eyes to dry them, you shifted your focus to your bags. The task at hand should distract you. Moving through the motions always helped you put the past back where it belonged. Besides, Erie would be done with her debrief soon and the Force alone knew how long she planned on dragging you around the base tonight.
A small smile unfurled on your lips a while later as a light knock reverberated through the door. You tossed the rest of your yet-to-be-folded clothes into the chest that lay at the food of the bed and began speaking as you walked over to the control panel, projecting so Erie could hear you on the other side.
“And here I was thinking you forgot about—”
But when the door slid open, your friend wasn’t on the other side. Where her eyes should have been stood a wall of muscle, evident even behind the chest plate. It was dingy, scuffed armor that had seen better days after too much fighting, flecks of blue paint hanging on for dear life as if determined not to fade into obscurity.
“Me.” The last word came out a whisper without your consent, your bold tease fizzling into insecurity.
If you had been hesitant to meet Wolffe’s eyes, you were obstinate in your determination to keep your gaze straight on that armor. You had never been strong, never claimed to be. But this was a new type of weakness, foreign as it flooded your bones. Your jaw trembled as all your effort was focused on holding back the surge you could feel coming.
“Oh, mesh’la.”
His sigh nearly undid you, and you could feel yourself blinking rapidly, your body fighting just to hold steady. You could. You just needed a moment.
But it seemed he had other plans. It was gentle; of course it was. He was always so kriffing gentle with you. Even when you had taunted him, teased him into being rough, it never lasted. He had spoken to you gently, guided you gently, held you gently, loved you gently.
He had broken you gently.
And now, as those damned fingers pressed under your chin to force your gaze upward, they were so heart-achingly gentle, opening the old wounds anew. He was a man built for battle. And yet you found his most brutal side in his gentleness.
Unable to resist — you never were good at denying him — you finally met his gaze.
“I could never forget you.”
Your heart squeezed painfully hearing the words you’d longed for as his rich brown eyes swept over you, taking you in. It stuttered at the thought of what he must be seeing. Mussed hair with so many more grays than before. Crow’s feet that spread from the corners of your eyes to your temples with various other lines crossing your face, interrupted only by the freckles and sunspots you’ve collected over the years.
You weren’t usually vain. But you wore the years plainly on your face … and on your body. At least if I’d been able to put on a clean shirt, you lamented.
The self-deprecation was like a jolt to your brain, bringing you back to yourself, to the present. Rex was here, in your doorway, fighting for the rebellion. It makes sense. That’s what he set off to do all those years ago. But you never let yourself wonder what he was actually doing for fear your wonderings would lead to knowledge you couldn’t survive: Him not being with you was painful; him not being was unimaginable.
But before you stood confirmation that he was alive and well.
And not once did he try to contact you.
Clearing your throat quietly, you plastered a smile on your face, the one you reserved for difficult customers and nosey neighbors, and prayed it didn’t look at stiff as it felt.
“Well, you’re not Erie.” Your tone was light and sounded artificial even to you.
Rex’s responding laugh was just as fake. “No, I’m definitely not.”
His hand dropped back to his side, but his eyes remained locked on yours, searching. For what, you couldn’t guess, and even if you could, you weren’t sure if it still existed. But you are sure that whatever is going to happen next won’t happen in the public hallway.
“Do you want to come in?” You asked, pulling back, pulling away, pivoting to let him pass to enter your room.
“Thank you.” He paused once he took a few steps in. No longer restricted to the GAR meal plan, he had filled out. His broad shoulders almost grazed the sides of the doorway as he passed through, and while his muscles were still evident, they were covered pleasantly by a layer of healthy fat that made him seem even larger than how he loomed in your memory.
As you glanced down, you caught sight of his hands, curling into fists only to unfurl and curl again. The thought that he could be just as unsettled in that moment as you felt was jarring … but welcome.
You moved to sit on your bed, gesturing to the other end for him lacking another option.
“Looks like you’re already settled in,” he noted, shifting to bend one leg to turn to face you. He wore his years, too. But they looked much better on him. His blonde hair was gone, shaved down to the skin. The full white beard was new, too, and rather impressive.
It helped that he looked different. Helped you feel like you could get through this without embarrassing yourself. And you wanted to. You wanted at least to be able to talk to him as a friend again. He may not want you the way he used to, but you could be cordial to a fellow rebel.
“Yeah, didn’t have much to unpack. I guess that’s the bright side of a last-minute extraction.” The tint of humor colored your voice a little more naturally. Confidence trickled slowly, but it was there. You clung to it like a lifeline.
“Extraction? What the kark were you up to that needed an extraction?”
Your eyes cut to his, challenging his sharp tone with your own. “What I could. What, did you think I’d be a good little citizen of the Empire?”
The hit landed better than any punch you could throw. He recoiled, if only slightly.
Guilt curdled your stomach. You didn’t want it to go this way, for the accusation to fill your voice even though you left it out of your words. But you couldn’t help that small, dark, nasty piece of who you used to be that wanted him to feel a fraction of what he put you through.
“I’m sorry. That wasn’t fair. I didn’t … I didn’t want to be angry if we ever met again,” you confessed, catching the corner of your lip between your teeth. “And besides, I likely would have ended up here anyway.”
You moved to pick at your already threadbare sheet as the silence coagulated around you, thick and heavy.
“No, it was fair. More than.”
You found yourself mirroring his deep breath as he continued.
“You never were one to rest on your laurels. I just … I always liked imagining you on your home planet or somewhere in the Outer Rim, curating your library or working on your crafts. Something peaceful, on a peaceful planet far away from the mess of the Empire.”
The hint of a smile touched the corners of his mouth as the weight of his admission settled around you. You didn’t want it to comfort you.
And yet …
When Rex left, he said it was his duty to find and save his brothers. To do that, he needed to leave you behind. You always understood that to mean you couldn’t keep up. You would be a liability to his mission, one he couldn’t risk.
And yet …
“You thought about me?”
Rex’s eyes hardened, singularly focused on you as he reached out to grab your hand. Even now, as a fire you refused to name burned clearly in his eyes, he was still achingly gentle in his touch.
“I thought about you every day.” He spoke almost insultingly slowly, every word bursting with intention. “You were the thought that kept me going.”
“Then why-” You swallowed down the crack in your voice, hating how it revealed just how tenuous your control was. Rex moved closer to you, bringing his hand up to your cheek, but you leaned away and pushed it down. Gently.
“Why didn’t you come back? You never even commed.”
“I had to keep you safe-”
The speed with which he was ready to spit out the answer, like he had rehearsed it, fanned the flames licking up your spine, forging it to steel.
“That’s osik and you know it. No one is safe from the Empire, and-”
“And I realized that. Took longer than it should have to get through my thick skull, but it did. Wolffe and Gregor helped get that lesson in. So I went back to Coruscant. And you were gone.”
The shock from his admission kept you frozen so that when Rex reached for you again, you let his palm curve around your cheek. You had left Coruscant a few years after the fall of the Republic, unable to stay in the shadow of your lost life.
If you hadn’t ...
“When I couldn’t find you on planet, I convinced myself it was for the best. I had been a coward when I left. I hurt you. I thought it was to protect you, but I think even then I knew I was keeping myself safe more. Me leaving meant I would never have to see you in danger. So when I saw you also left, it meant you moved on. You weren’t hurting anymore. You were starting a new life … just like I told you to.”
His thumb moved back and forth across the dry skin of your cheek as he pulled you forward. You fell into him, your hands braced on his knees as he pressed his forehead against yours.
“But that was an excuse. I was still just a coward. I didn’t know what I could say to you that would do any good and … I didn’t want to see someone else next to you, living the life I wanted.” His eyes closed before he continued. “You deserve the galaxy, and I didn’t know how to give it to you. I still don’t.”
It was a confession saturated with guilt and shame. It crawled over you as your tears finally slipped past your control to pool against his thumb.
Safe from the weight of his gaze, you gave a confession of your own. “I never wanted the galaxy. I only ever wanted you.”
Rex’s eyes snapped open, and you could feel his heavy breaths matching yours. Before he had the chance to say anything, you pushed the words out of your mouth, letting the purest truth you knew pour out of you.
“I didn’t leave to start over. I left to escape. The opportunity to help the rebellion came to me, so I took it. It was my way of fighting against the thing that stole you from me. And … And if I did my job right, if I smuggled enough blasters, and med packs, and rations, then I wasn’t just helping the rebellion. I was keeping you safe, too.”
It wasn’t everything. It was barely enough. But you needed him to know, beyond a doubt, that your heart always had been and always will be only his.
“The thought that I could be helping you was what kept me going.”
His grip on you tightened, pulling you impossibly closer. “Can-” Now it was his voice that broke. “Can I kiss you? Please, sweetheart, can I-”
Maybe at one point, a younger you would have kept your composure, would have remained determined not to let Rex see just how desperate he could still make you.
But time had taught you well just how fleeting it could be. And you knew pride was nothing compared to the feeling of your love on your lips.
So, there was no hesitation as you closed the distance, answering the ache in his voice with the frantic press of your lips to his. The brush of his beard was foreign, the hair scraping and chafing your skin. But you couldn’t care when the familiar touch of his kiss grounded you, made you feel whole and alive in a way you forgot possible.
It hurt, feeling the small, shriveled thing you had allowed your heart to become taking up room in your chest once again, filling up with nothing but him — the feel of his skin on yours, the smell of his soap tickling your nose, the sound of the small noises that escaped his lips as he devoured yours in turn.
But it was a pain you’d welcome a thousand times over if it meant Rex’s mouth stayed on yours. This wasn’t just a kiss. It was a rebirth, the two of you breathing new life into one another.
You shivered as his tongue slid along your bottom lip. A whimper betrayed your need and you opened for him, letting him explore what has always been his. Blood roared in your ears, and you cursed it for drowning out the sound of his groan as his tongue danced along yours.
Pressing yourself ever closer, your hands slid up his impossibly thick thighs for balance as you leaned into him, needing to feel him everywhere. Thank the Force Rex understood. He always did, after all. He lifted you with ease to pull you into his lap, his arms wrapping securely around you to keep you in place as your legs slid around his waist.
But then he pulled his face away, holding you firm as your hands curled around his shoulders and your lips tried to chase him.
“I’m sorry, sweet girl.” His eyes pierced into you, and you could see how determined he was for his apology to reach you. “So, so sorry.”
“It’s-”
“Don’t say it’s okay. It’s not.” There was the captain you remembered, his tone curtailing any argument before you could even raise one. “But if you’ll let me, I plan on spending every spare moment I have making things right.”
He softened, but his eyes were just as intense. “You don’t have to answer right away. I want you to be sure; no regrets. Because if you say yes, mesh’la …” His arms tighten around you, the pressure of his strength sparking delightfully across your torso as every ounce of insecurity melted from your body and his lips moved to graze your ear. “I’m never letting you go again.”
“Please don’t,” You beg, barely letting him finish. “Please don’t ever let me go. Hold me, claim me, make me yours. Build a future with me so I never have to live without you again. Choose me ... the way I never stopped choosing you.”
The silence in the wake of your plea lasted only as long as a single heartbeat. Then, something in Rex shattered.
He may have broken you gently, but he was going to rebuild you roughly.
Coarse hands lifted you again as if you weighed nothing, throwing you onto your bed and knocking the breath from your lungs. Before you could even think, Rex was on you, his hips pressing you into the mattress as his hands slid up and down your sides.
“I do choose you.” You shiver at the growl in his throat as the words slide down your spine to pool deep in your belly. His hands slide under the thin fabric of your tunic, and you preen as his fingertips dance along your skin. “And I’ll keep choosing you. Let me prove it. Can I show you, pretty girl? Show you how I can take care of you?”
Your eyes slipped closed as his indulgent tone; your core fluttered at the dark promises dripping from his lips. But a quick, sharp sting on your neck pulls you back.
“Eyes on me,” he reprimanded, though his smirk as he licked the skin red from his nip betrayed his amusement. “I need an answer, mesh’la.”
“Yes! Yes, please. Stars, Rex, show me!”
You should be embarrassed by how quickly you cave for him. But how can you be when Rex wasted even less time in claiming your mouth again, all tongue and teeth as he left no part untouched. You reveled in the attention, undulating hips demanding even more as your hands trailed along the broad curve of his shoulders. You followed the line of muscle down his arms, feeling as they shifted with the movements of his own hands.
Hands that locked around your hips and forced them to still. “Not yet.”
His admonishment wasn’t quite enough to dissuade you from challenging him. You pushed your core against his length, leaving you breathless at how perfectly it pressed against where you needed most.
Rex’s responding moan reverberated through you pleasantly. His dark chuckle, however, gave you pause. You’d heard it maybe once or twice, and you knew it meant trouble.
“I said …” He moved so his legs straddled yours, his full weight holding you still as he held both your wrists in one hand above your head. “Not. Yet.”
You pushed against his grip, needing to put your hands on him again, to feel him. Every inch of you needed to be touching every inch of him now.
“Please, Rex. Please, I need …” Your desperation stole your words and turned them to whines. This wasn’t the first time you felt carnal desire since he left. But you had always just taken care of yourself, quick and efficient, turning pleasure into a task like any other.
Now, you were consumed by your need.
A sweet kiss graced your lips lightly before Rex hushed you.
“I know, sweetheart. I know. But I’m going to take my time with you. It’s been so long, and I wanna take care of you right. You’re going to come undone on my tongue …” At this, his tongue made itself known as he licked a steady stripe up the side of your next, pouring fuel on the inferno raging just under your skin.
“On my fingers …” His free hand trailed over the wet skin, continuing past your neck, over your collarbone to tease mercilessly at the top of your breast.
“And once I feel you’re ready, you’ll come all over my cock.” Rex brought one of your hands down to the front of his pants, letting you feel his hardness through his trousers. “But you’ll need to be good and listen. Can you do that?”
You nod, whipping your head up and down, willing him to give you exactly what he promised now but groaning when he moves your hand away from him.
“Wound up this bad already? I believe that’s a new record. You need to use your words, pretty girl.”
You wanted to slap him for his teasing, but your pointed glare would have to suffice. “No shit it’s a record. I’ve been waiting,” you huffed.
Rex stilled. “Have…Have you not …?”
You could feel the heat returning to your cheeks so you answered before he could find his words if only to cut your own embarrassment short.
“No. I mean I took care of myself, but…”
Unbridled lust was the only thing you saw when you met Rex’s eyes again. “Then I won’t make you wait any longer.”
Using his grip on your wrists, he pulled you up and with a speed you didn’t realize he had, he stripped your tunic from your body. Before you could even register the cold pebbling your nipples, he moved to your waistband, peeling your underwear and leggings down in one move, pausing only to pull your shoes off before you’re completely bare before him.
“Kriff, Rex,” you huffed, impressed as Rex cast off his chest piece with as little regard as possible.
But the man above you focused only on your newly revealed form. You moved to touch him in return, hoping to hide a few of the new rolls of your abdomen against his.
You should have realized by now tonight was going his way.
“Let me see you, ner mesh’la karta,” he commanded. You didn’t want to, but since you never thought you’d ever get to hear another order from your captain, you obeyed, laying back and following his eyes with yours as they took you in.
He leaned down, dragging his lips over your stomach to graze the bottom of your breast with his teeth. Gently, but with the threat of rough just under the surface.
You wanted both … everything … anything he would give you.
“Perfect.” You keened at the praise, lifting and offering yourself to his mouth and earning a smile in return. “Oh yes, I remember …”
His tongue ran across your nipple before he blew softly, sending a shudder through you. You didn’t suffer long before he wrapped his lips around your peak and sucked hard. Nothing could have stopped the cry that spilled out of you as your back arched, your body mindlessly giving him even more access.
And he took every inch you gave. Releasing you with a satisfying pop, Rex reached up to turn you to face him with one hand as the other moved down your body to rest just at your mound.
“Spread your legs for me. Be a good girl and show me that pretty little pussy of yours.”
You pulled your knees up and wrapped your hands around them to pull them apart and hide how he made you tremble. The cool air, made colder from your slick, tickled your sensitive skin. But it was the reverent hunger on Rex’s face that made your cunt clench around nothing.
“Please, Rex. I—”
He didn’t let you finish your pathetic plea, instead diving forward, his movements just as desperate as you felt. His hands encircled your thighs, pushing them even further apart as he buried his face into your core and let his tongue sink into your wet hole with a satisfied moan.
His tongue laved against you, determined to touch every inch of you before gliding up to circle your clit. As your breathy whimpers turned into full-fledged cries, you absentmindedly hoped that the walls around you were thicker than they looked before Rex wrapped his lips around your nub and sucked.
A moan erupted from deep within you as your muscles contracted and sent a gush of arousal spilling out of you, leaving you unable to care who heard.
“Stars, already so wet for me. You taste like a dream.” His eyes pierced you from where he lay between your legs. “Keep your hands where they are and hold yourself open for me.”
You mewled in response as he returned to his task with his fingers now aiding in the effort, finding your clit with ease as his tongue entered you once again. His free hand slides up to rest on your tummy, pressing down but not enough to keep you still. But just enough so you can feel him as your hips kept their frantic undulation going, your body demanding the release he promised.
“That’s it,” he groaned to himself more than to you. “Good girl, taking what you need.”
Picking up the pace, Rex kept his fingers moving in tighter and tighter circles, keeping pace with your frenzied keening as he fucked you with his tongue.
“Kriff, Rex … so close … so … S-shit shit shit shit-”
He pushed down harder on your pelvis, amplifying every spark he ignited at your core as his fingers moved ever faster. “Let go, mesh’la. Let go and don’t you dare fucking hold back. Give it to me!”
Your captain gave an order. What else could you do but obey?
You shattered around him, your scream echoing against his satisfied groan as he drank from your cunt with a fierce intensity. His fingers and tongue never stopped as he forced your orgasm out of you, working you well past overstimulation into boneless compliance as you gave everything he demanded.
Eventually, the aftershocks faded. Rex’s ministrations eased, though he never took his hands off you, letting his fingers trail gently along your lips and restoking the fire in you that burned only for him.
“I love you, Rex,” you sighed, relief flooding you as the words finally escaped you after years locked away.
Rex smiled with only a tinge of sadness in his eyes speaking to lost time before he rest his head against the softness of your thigh, pressing a kiss to your skin.
“I love you, too, sweetheart.”
“Don’t leave me again?” You meant it as a command, but you had none of Rex’s natural authority. Well, that and your post-orgasmic state hindered what strength your voice could have had, leaving the order sounding more like a needy whine.
“Never.” Rex slid his hand back down, gathering your slick to sink two thick fingers deep into you. “Now, I believe I said something about you coming on my fingers next.”
Thankfully for you, Rex was a man of his word. He never left your side again. He kept the rest of his promises, too.

It was common for the 501st Captain to sleep talk. The war had done things to him, horrible things, and it now invaded his sleeping.
When you asked Rex about his dreams, he didn't say much. It was usually around the line of 'It was nothing, don't worry about me.' or 'I'm fine." which you understood. The war did take a huge toll on his life and of course he wouldn't want to discuss the thoughts that ate up his mind every night.
But after what happened on Umbara, that's when he finally broke.
One night, you had stayed up late, counting up the loss of clones from that day's battle while Rex was sound asleep on your bed, when he began to toss and turn. "No, no stop." Rex mumbled. "Stop! They're us! They're clones!"
You stood up from your seat and hurried over to his side. "Hey, hey, it's just a dream love, wake up." You gently shook him.
When the captain came to, he looked at you with fear in his eyes. Slowly, he sat up and placed his hands against his face. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
"Don't apologize." Your lips curved into a frown. "I was awake anyways."
"What? Why?" Rex pulled his sweaty shirt over his head and tossed it to the side. "You need to get some sleep."
"This isn't about me Rex, it's about you. I know that you don't want to talk about your nightmares... but maybe it'll take some of the weight off of your chest."
"Y/N, I promise you, I'm fine." The blonde stood up and went to get a new pair of blacks. "All I need is something to eat, a shower, and then I'll be good to go."
"Not so fast." You stopped him and patted the spot next to you. "Sit down."
  Rex simply did as told and took the spot. A sad, disturbed expression had taken over his face, his gaze on the ground. "I'm sorry."
"Rex," You gently grabbed his hand. "it wasn't your fault and you know it."
"A lot of those men could still be here if I hadn't shot them dead." He muttered. "I murdered them, my own brothers. They're dead because of my... my gullibility."
"No, my love." You used your other hand to cup one of his cheeks. "You were deceived, by an awful monster. He used your loyalty against you and that wasn't fair."
Rex instantly relaxed under your touch, but couldn't bear look at you. He hated appearing as vulnerable in front of anyone, even you. Being his girlfriend, you of course knew this, so you guided his head to your shoulder, where he was able to bury his face into the crook of your neck. His tears began soaking your shirt, but you didn't mind. For the rest of the night, you held him in your arms until he fell back asleep.
Even later that night, after you'd fallen asleep with him, Rex found himself having another bad dream. This time, he woke up on his own, surprised that you were still out cold. Deciding that he most likely wasn't going to go back to sleep, Rex carefully removed himself from your arms and tried to get off of the bed without waking you, but failed to do so.
"Rex? Are you okay?" You tiredly asked.
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." He tried not to worry you. "I'm just gonna hop in the fresher."
"Alright."
Once Rex undressed and stepped into the shower, he stood underneath the water and got lost in thought. He hadn't even noticed that you walked into the washroom.
Soon, his tears were blending with the water droplets that rushed down his face, and you had stepped in behind him. "Rex?"
"Maybe he was right, maybe I am... just a dysfunctional clone." Rex mumbled.
You wrapped your arms around his torso and rested the side of your face against his back. "Don't say that."
"Why? It's true." He shrugged. "Clones were built to handle any stress, but I can't. Every one of my brothers, nothing seems to bother them, they don't think about these things as much I do."
"You're right, baby. Your brothers are different than you." You pressed a kiss to his shoulder blade. "You're their Captain and they're your responsibility. When they fall, you take the blame upon yourself."
"You don't get it— we were bred in a lab, we were created to fight, to die. It shouldn't bother me that we're fulfilling our purpose."
    You turned the blonde around and looked up at him. "Rex, I understand this more than you think I do." You whispered. "As a medic, I'm expected to save so many of your brothers, and when I fail I... I can't help but feel like it's my fault."
  "Of course it isn't your fault, love. Not everyone can be saved." He cupped one of his large hands on your cheek.
"Exactly." You relaxed under his touch. "Not everyone can be saved, no matter how hard we want to save them. These things are hard, but we get through them, always."
Rex looked you in the eyes for a moment before locking lips with you. His free hand found it's way to your waist and pulled your body closer to his. For what felt like forever, you and your boyfriend stayed there, your bodies pressed together, your lips moving in sync while you gripped onto one of his biceps. When Rex decided to finally take a breather, he brought you into his chest and held you securely. "How'd I get so lucky?"
"I should be asking that question." You murmured into his skin. "I love you Rex, and I'll always be here by your side."
"You can't say that you're the lucky one and then say something like that." A soft chuckle escaped from his lips before he pecked a kiss to your head. "Let's finish up in here and then we can go and grab a bite in the mess?"
"Sounds lovely."
After that night, Rex didn't have as many bad dreams as usual, not since he became open about them with you. Sometimes, you'd sing to him before he fell asleep, which helped sooth his fear, thus, he began to call you his 'Good Luck Charm.'
