In honor of me being at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh WI this week, I wanted to officially kick off this blog with some aircraft headcanons! Having gotten to sit in the cockpit of an AH-64 Apache (one of the irl inspirations for the Navajo), I’ve decided to start with probably the first helicopter we all went out of our way to steal from the military, the one and only

Stats:
Length: 12.28 meters (40 feet)
Height: 3.35 meters (11 feet)
Empty weight: 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs)
Maximum weight: 3,600 kg (7,937 lbs)
Rotor diameter: 11.9 meters (5 blades)
Top cruise speed: 243 km/h (151 mph)
Maximum speed (redline): 279 km/h (173 mph)
Maximum rate of climb: 853 meters/minute (2,800 feet/minute)
Service ceiling: 65,616 meters (20,000 feet)
Range: 510 km (320 mi)
Armaments:
• 38 Volcanus missiles
• 8 Vindicator missiles
Powered by two turboshaft engines, each providing roughly 1000 horsepower
Highly angular, narrow fuselage is designed to reduce the helicopter’s profile at certain angles and make it harder to hit, compensating for its relatively light armor
Some of Medici’s Navajo fleet (although not most) are armed with light machine guns. These choppers are generally stationed in larger military bases to provide extra firepower or sent as aerial escorts for others. (these armaments were depicted in the “Kasabian Trailer)
Compared to the Urga Hrom D and the Urga Mstitel, the Navajo is the Medici Military’s favored attack chopper for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it’s relatively affordable, especially when compared to the former two. Medici was one of the first several nations to place an order when Capstone rolled out production in 2012, purchasing an initial fleet of forty. Di Ravello has since acquired dozens more
Designed to seat two pilots, but due to crew availability the Medici Military usually operates them with the minimum required crew of one. This allows them to have more helicopters flying at a given time—but does see a reduction in performance
Sensors on the nose provide targeting for the aircraft’s missiles and night vision, making the Navajo a threat both day and night. However, it does have limitations. The night vision sensor cannot detect small obstacles such as wires or poles, and I think most of us can agree wouldn’t be the first time if a pilot focused on chasing Rico ended up striking something
Capstone designed the Navajo with versatility in mind. It excels in air-to-ground combat, and is capable of anything from armed reconnaissance, escort, ground attack or support, and anti-tank attacks. Where it does fall a little short is anti-aircraft; while it possesses the firepower to take down other aircraft, its standard-equipped missiles are unguided. A skilled pilot (or a skilled gunner, should the helicopter be fully manned) can sometimes land a good strike, though
Considered a medium attack chopper, the Navajo is designed for quick response times and maneuverability in combat. Its lighter armor makes it quite maneuverable—capable of very brief acrobatic maneuvers—but leaves it more vulnerable to damage (If you don’t believe me that attack choppers can perform acrobatics, watch this. The Apache is a hell of an aircraft)
https://youtu.be/q52KxdjXvJM
youtube
Why do you never see these maneuvers performed by Medici Military, you may ask? Simply put barrel rolls and slow loops aren’t very useful in combat. Especially if someone is shooting at you, the last thing you want to do is slow down! These maneuvers simply demonstrate capability and I just think it’s neat :D
The important thing is that the Navajo possesses more than enough agility to be effective. In the hands of a skilled pilot, it can stop or spin on a dime, roll tightly around obstacles, and even outmaneuver ground-to-air or air-to-air attacks

The Wave
Although it may look like something Salvador Dalí would paint, this is an actual image of The Wave, a rock formation located in the Coyote Buttes near Arizona’s border with Utah. Comprised of Navajo Sandstone dating back to the Jurassic age, water erosion has carved troughs into this formation. However, the drainage basin that was the source of water responsible for the erosion began to dry out, and the run-off ceased.
The job of sculpting the formation now lays entirely with the wind. As it funnels through the troughs, the wind continues to shape the landscape, resulting in steps and risers carved into the walls of the sandstone.
Photographers typically find the best time to take pictures is during midday, when there are no visible shadows on the rocks. Twilight is also a popular time to photograph, as one can get a remarkable picture with the Milky Way serving as the background. Additionally, puddles of water containing fairy shrimp and tadpoles will form on the ground after a rain storm. These puddles act as mirrors, perfectly reflecting the striking beauty of the formation.
Due to the fragility of the sandstone, access to The Wave is restricted to just 20 visitors per day (Although there is a possibility this number could soon be increased). Permits are distributed via a lottery system, and the chances of obtaining one during peak visiting months are quite slim. Regardless, it’s still a spot with visuals that cannot be replicated anywhere else, and merits a visit by anyone able to go.

If certain characters like Emma and Snow are "safe" then wudnt that take away the jeopardy from Lucy's words 'ur family needs u?' I dont know if the audience will care unless all of henry's family was cursed or trapped in another realm. Say the audience cares for cs and if they were togther, happy and safe in 7x02 then wat reason is there for fans of cs to watch beyond that? i know audience is not the online fandom but surely a large chunk of them care for the leading ladies emma and snow?
contd: i just think that if emma and snow were cursed/trapped then the audience (who are fans of those char in particular) wud have to reason to keep watching just to see if they are saved by henry in the end.
No.  My grandmother and uncles were in the path of a hurricane two weeks ago.  My family was in danger.  The fact that my uncle on the Navajo Reservation was safe doesn’t make my family not in danger.
I’m … confused why this is hard for you to understand.
The GA is not dumb.  They can tell a reboot.  They may ask where those characters are but they’re not on the show anymore is an answer they’ll be fine with.

From Earth Science Picture of the Day; September 8, 2018:
Encore - Gilded Light of Glen Canyon Photographer and Summary Author: Thomas McGuire
Today and every Saturday Earth Science Picture of the Day invites you to rediscover favorites from the past. Saturday posts feature an EPOD that was chosen by viewers like you in our monthly Viewers' Choice polls. Join us as we look back at these intriguing and captivating images.
Golden light illuminates a remote tributary of Lake Powell and Glen Canyon in southern Utah, where a lone hiker strolls along a still pool that reflects the opposite wall of the canyon. The canyon walls have altered the natural (direct) sunlight with the colors of the Navajo Sandstone.
Even after 50 years, construction of the Glen Canyon Dam and the flooding of most of Glen Canyon remain controversial. The Grand Canyon is known for its wide vistas over the raging Colorado River. Glen Canyon, just a few miles upstream, was more sublime with broad floodplains, vertical canyon walls and relatively tame rapids. Today, about 10 mi (16 km) of the original Glen Canyon remains below the dam. But even there, the ecology has been altered by the controlled flows and cold water from the depths of Lake Powell. I took this image last autumn on a week-long photographic tour of Lake Powell, sponsored by the Grand Circle Field School.

4 Unplugged Activities for Hour of Code
Hour of Code is a time when teachers show students why they should love-not-fear coding and students find out that these activities — often seen as geeky or impossible — aren’t. They’re actually fun.
Every year in preparation for December, I post lots of coding activities that students can complete with their computers, on the Internet, or using iPads, but this year, I want to do something different. Let’s go back to the roots of coding. The idea started as a clever way to teach students to think critically and problem-solve. The easiest way was to gamify coding, put students on a digital device they loved, and set them free. One hour, according to Hour of Code, would show them that deep thinking was fun and problem-solving was exhilarating.
I happen to agree. Some of my most gratifying moments are when I accomplish the impossible, unravel a Mobius Strip-like problem, or force myself to do what I’ve never before done. Hour of Code does that every year for oh many students. But here’s my issue: Too often, kids forget that the goal is to practice critical thinking and problem solving, not pursue a career in programming.
This year, I want to reinforce that goal by stepping away from technology. I want students to recognize that these skills — critical thinking and problem-solving — apply to any part of life, even without a computer, iPad, or smartphone in hand. All kids need is their brain which happily, every child carries with them.
Here are some of my favorite unplugged activities:
Code.org Hour of Code Unplugged
Ages 4 and up
Code.org, the grandfather of Hour of Code offerings, recognizes the importance of critical thinking outside of coding and programming. To reinforce this, they offer a slew of unplugged critical thinking activities to pursue during the Hour of Code week.  This includes non-computer activities such as Happy Maps, Graph Paper Programming, Dice Race, Binary
Bracelets, Mad Glibs, Unspotted Bugs, and more. These cover coding topics such as:
abstraction
algorithms
binary images
computational thinking
conditionals
debugging
functions
loops
variables
These projects variously include a lesson plan, instructions, assessments, a video on understanding the topic and the activity, and more. When you click on the link, it provides lesson plans with preferred age groups and a grid filled with thirty-nine unplugged activities organized by age and concept.
Thinkersmith’s Unplugged Hour of Code Activity
Ages 4-7
My Robotic Friends is a one-hour introductory non-computer activity where students learn to program a human robot. Break students into pairs and have one student write the steps required to do something (the video suggests stacking cups). The second student (called a robot) takes those directions and follows them exactly to see if they can do what is asked. If they can’t, the student who wrote the steps debugs their instructions until they are clear and the robot student can accomplish what was expected. Here’s a full lesson plan on My Robotic Friends (also available in Spanish) and a quick video.
youtube
This is a fun and thought-provoking way to discuss sequencing, attention to detail, and debugging problems and is easily completed in one hour though kids may want to take longer.
Computer Science Unplugged
Ages 5-14
CS Unplugged is a collection of free teaching materials that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles, many accomplished with cards, string, crayons, and lots of running around. This teacher-oriented website provides everything you need to teach computer science without a computer. If you’re thinking that’s an oxymoron, then you’re exactly who this is intended for. Topics include binary numbers, Kidbots, Sorting networks, Error detection and correction, and Searching algorithms. Each topic variously includes unit plans, lesson plans, teaching videos, curriculum integration activities, printables, and programming exercises–all without a computer.
This is one of the original unplugged websites and includes a link to the classic offerings if you’re looking for those.
Code HS Color By Pixel
Ages 12-17
In this one-hour artistic project, students “code” their own art with pixels by learning about coordinates, the purpose of pixels, and how to create drawings by setting pixels to different colors. The lesson first teaches the basics of computer graphics before setting students loose to create their own Color by Pixel program.  There are four parts, each covering a specific topic. The lesson plan includes class discussion, vocabulary, questions, examples, and step-by-step directions.
This is a great introduction to graphic design for art students interested in that side of art.
***
It’s easy to conflate coding with computers but its core is problem-solving and critical thinking. These existed before digital devices and will prevail if an EMP Pulse wipes out everything with electronics. Remind kids that their brains are bigger than computers, more resilient than digital devices, and more portable than any other type of assistant.
