Ah, but Voldemort-the-revolutionary.

See, the thing about a revolution is that it isn’t a concept defined by the underlying set of beliefs as much as it is by the act of change. Yes, a revolution can be spurred by a group with a unifying social or political theory wanting to instate their views as the new form of governance, but any attempt to overthrow the government and form your own in its place is a revolution, no matter how shoddily-motivated.

No, I don’t think Voldemort cares for blood supremacy. My version of him certainly doesn’t, I love to play in his mixed upbringing too much. A more canon-compliant Voldemort spouts a good deal of blood prejudice by the time we see him in book four onwards, but we know that he at least attempted to recruit Muggleborns (Lily Potter) during the first war. It seems likely to me that blood supremacy was an expedient way to convince a bunch of wealthy and influential people to follow him, the exact sort of people who otherwise would have zero reason to want to support a guy whose aim is to overthrow the government that they’re a part of. As a platform, it’s an implicit promise to keep them on top while eliminating some of their political enemies in a society where feuds between families run centuries deep. It’s the sort of thing that scapegoats a group so that Voldemort’s working-class followers focus their hatred on something other than those wealthy families at the top. It’s a convenience, and it works to get him the support base he needs to be successful for many years.

But as to his own views, quite honestly, I don’t think he has much beyond wanting power and wanting to never die. (Not to live forever, mind—I don’t think he’s thought that part through.) What does he do when he owns the Ministry during book seven? He fucks off to the Continent to search for an artifact instead of running the country he’s conquered. The implication is that he was winning his first war as well, by around 1980, and what happens then? He gets distracted by a prophecy and upends all of that success. He certainly has no compunction about killing someone like Hepzibah Smith, an old money/old family type who might have helped him get ahead over a decade earlier than his actual rise, because he valued the shiny things more than he valued a coherent plan for political power.

There’s a phrase that comes up in discussion of hobbies/skills, something like: do you want to do X, or do you want to have done X? Do you want to write, or do you want to have written, to be an author? Do you want to knit, or do you want to have the hand-knit jumper? It’s a useful thought exercise to help someone determine whether they enjoy the process or not.

Voldemort wants to have led a successful revolution. He wants to have overthrown a government. Nothing we see of him suggests he actually enjoys the process of governance: he’s irritable and short-tempered with his followers (all those crucios), he always seems to be talking to himself more than anyone else (that graveyard scene hand joke), he delegates seemingly to get a task off of his own desk rather than because he trusts the person to get it done (Lucius was really going to get that prophecy? ok.), and, even if it’s mostly a result of story-structure constraints, he spends most of his time not doing anything and comes out for like one or two days of effort a year. This isn’t the behavior of a man with a strong sociopolitical theory for a new government!

I mean, I think an AU can set up a Voldemort who does care and has a core belief system. Waterlogged is one such story, so thanks for citing it! That Tom Riddle is introduced to a theory of social change from an impressionable age, has those values reinforced for at least a decade, and the result is a man shaped by them such that he actively pursues social change (within legal means) for the rest of his career. I flirt with what issues Tom or Voldemort might care about in a few other stories, from setting up a university in You Should Know to the more high-level educational reform efforts in Busy Seeing Red to his choice of career in Professor of Muggle Studies to his postwar rationing rant in Two Halves to his discussion about the AIDS crisis in Made of Clay to his damned donations to the Boys and Girls Club in Awful at Heart. I think that with Tom, the personal is political. The issues that could motivate him to care, to impact his behavior in big ways or small, will always be the things closest to his sense of self. He’s lived through so many horrible things. If he’s selfless, he wants to prevent others from experiencing the same. If he’s selfish, he wants to destroy the institutions that harmed him out of pure spite.

And, hell, that’s the fundamental principle underlying his canonical wars: this world fucked me, so I’m going to fuck it right back.

The Tenth Doctor is forced to use a super-powered, and truly gigantic machine, as part of a combat alliance with Sontarans (who are normally his sworn enemies). The Ninth Doctor is on the back foot as he seemingly loses Rose forever, and his faithful time ship into the bargain. The London of 2006 that was established as relatively safe is now totally overcome by the silver giants. And as for the Eleventh Doctor, both he and Alice face a change of evolution back in the ancient time zone of ‘Prehistoric’ Earth. A change that contradicts established knowledge concerning the fate of the Silurian race. But it is the Twelfth Doctor who is facing the eye of the storm and discovering what his Cybermen nemeses are intending to do, not only with the wider cosmos, but with the  temporal flow of causality itself. It soon becomes clear that this Doctor’s apparent triumph over Rassilon (in Hell Bent) was only short-lived. The alternately legendary and reviled keystone figure in Gallifrey’s history (depending on when in his elongated lifespan) is now truly betraying his own kind, by allowing the Cybermen to have access to the higher technology of his race. In return for this 'sharing' of superior knowledge, the former Lord President is accepting some Cyber ‘enhancements’ to his own person. --- The initial two issues of this arc were separately reviewed on this site last year, and the consensus was that the initial foundations were promising. So the logical question is: does the conclusion deliver? In a nutshell - this is a satisfying romp  for the general time required to read through it. And as a collected edition it also perhaps reads in the best way, for one to enjoy such a large scale and ambitious type of story. When this story was first being released every month (or every other month) in the second half of 2016, sometimes the wait between issues highlighted how sparse was the material that most of the starring Doctors were given.  The key premise of the Cybermen looking to master both space and time is perhaps not new when one is to consider the likes of Attack of the Cybermen and Silver Nemesis, but with all due respect to those 1980s stories, the ideas at work here are that much stronger. Also, the limitless 'budget' of comics is also put to better use than was ever the case with those TV outings’ resources. The Doctor rarely is put under such immediate pressure as in this tale, and it is refreshing to have his other selves being so helpless and threatening to drag down the ‘present’ (Capaldi) incumbent. There are plenty of moments of high drama, with full-on ‘shock effect’ as various associates, or close friends of the Doctor(s) are seemingly slain, or coldly assimilated by the impassive forces of the Cybermen. The biggest stumbling block for this distinctly ambitious story is that the jeopardy is raised to such intense levels that the final method of bringing things to a close verges on deus ex machina. Yet it does see some welcome character development for one of the main antagonists, that arguably was not the most easy to anticipate based on much of the previous storyline. If one were to look for how strong the conclusion is overall, such as by comparing it with the prior year’s Titan comic event, then it is clear that the ending Paul Cornell devised for his Four Doctors story was just that margin more satisfying and neat.   Also, whilst it was brave to force the Twelfth Doctor to be the one regeneration to have the key to the puzzle, it is a little frustrating that the Doctor’s various companions are so passive here – again Cornell’s story was mindful of keeping the considerable precedent of the assistant role being crucial to the Doctor’s fortunes. As an introduction to those not so familiar with Doctors of past times – even in the recent decades – this adventure does fine work in maintaining key defining traits. The Eleventh Doctor is as light hearted and unflappable in the face of danger, as the most striking turns Matt Smith contributed on-screen. The Tenth Doctor has those hints of darkness and fury, such is the relatively short period that has occurred since the Time War. The Ninth Doctor’s relatively macho and assertive nature is well captured, and despite the human casualties that assault his senses, he still has that firm core belief in his ability to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat. Titan had also done a fine job in their ongoing regular comic lines to introduce teasers for this saga by having Doctors from the classic era of 1963-1989 pop up , and this is executed well in the main story by having further glimpses of the TV Time Lords of yesteryear..There are also some other pleasing references that operate in relieving the often relentlessly grim vibe – such as the mention of the 'Kessel Run' by the Ecclestone version of the Doctor. The visuals are mostly effective from the artwork team that contributed to this mini-arc, and the wealth of time and space is no doubt a cause for excitement for both casual reader and loyal monthly purchaser alike.  The main artists – Ivan Rodriguez and Walter Geovanni – are able to put their personal stamp on a wealth of familiar faces, along with those newly introduced for this particular story. There is good further art support from Alessandro Vitti, and the main colouring work from Nicola Righi is typically lively and effective in conveying the mood intended by co-writers Scott and Mann. --- Overall, readers can do far worse than give this graphic novel some time and careful attention as they uncover the myriad threads concerning Doctors past and present, as well as the turbulence that is Gallifrey in the future. It perhaps is not up there with some of the very best stories from Titan, but as an adventure featuring the second most recognised monster of the show, and one that makes some interesting use of the different Doctors from television screens in the last 12 or so years, it is definitely worth a look. It remains to be seen if Series 10's concluding episodes make equal or better use of the (potentially infinite) Cybermen concept; one that is now more than Fifty Years of age. http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2017/03/supremacy_of_the_cybermen_complete_collection.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Going on five years ago now, I wrote my first review. After only a few articles were published, I realized that a test-bench was a must for this line of work.  Luckily enough, my boss at the time had a prototype for the original Praxis Wetbench from Primochill sitting in a box in his house. Little did I know at the time that I wouldn’t be getting just a test bench, but a product that would change how I built computers forever.

It was sometime in early 2016 that the Primochill Praxis Wetbench first arrived at my door. Above an image of the original Praxis Wetbench Prototype that has lived on my desk for over 4 years. My first test system consisted of an i7-4790k, an EVGA GTX 980 SC and 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866 MHz. The cooler has actually been the same cooler on my test-bench since day one, the Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige, with a few modifications. Below are a couple iterations my Praxis Wetbench has gone through over the years.

If there was one complaint I have about the original Praxis Wetbench, it would be that it isn’t very AIO friendly. This is why I went with the Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige. It was the only AIO, at the time, that used actual G ¼ fittings and allowed me to swap out the tubing. So, I used some of Primochill’s soft tubing, slapped an EK Supremacy Evo on the cooler and its been there since.

Due to my love for the Praxis, I’ve developed somewhat of an obsession with test benches. All my systems are now installed on some form of test-bench or open-air system. The closest thing to a case I use anymore is a Thermaltake Core P5, without the glass of course. I’ve been in search of the perfect test-bench. Something that can replace the Praxis as my main bench for both PCTestbench, as well as Modders-Inc. Well, on February 27th, 2020, my search ended when I walked up to the PNY booth at Pax East and got my first glimpse at the new Primochill Praxis WetbenchSX.

To say I was excited is an understatement. I’ve heard rumors of a new Praxis for going on a year now and have been bugging the PR department at Primochill for just as long. I spotted the new Praxis WetbenchSX from about 100 or so feet away. I knew exactly what I was looking at and ran to the PNY booth where Primochill had the WetbenchSX set up on display. It nearly brought a tear to my eye.

More than one configuration:

I was aware there was a new Praxis in development for some time now but was completely unaware of the fact there would be more than one model of the new Praxis. I have always been a fan of the slanted design of the original Wetbench. From a reviewer’s point of view, the slanted model does come with its drawbacks. There are both the base models, as well as the Pro models. The base model is your standard test-bench in both the slanted and flat design.

The Pro model adds an additional side AIO/radiator bracket, a bottom radiator bracket as well as the fan arm. In addition, Primochill is offering an array of accessories that allow you to fully upgrade your new Praxis WetbenchSX. Essentially every bit and piece of the Praxis WetbenchSX can be purchased separately. So, you want to purchase the base model to save some money, but then realize you really need a fan arm, you can buy it. Or if you purchase the Pro model, but decide after, you need more options, you can add on it it.

You may not think so, but the motherboard being at an angle can get annoying when say swapping hardware as often as we do. Especially in regards to installing motherboards. Now from the point of view of a builder, it’s a great way to display your hardware. In fact, several of the vendors we meet with at events often have a system set up on a Praxis Wetbench. With the new WetbenchSX, Primochill not still offers the same slanted Wetbench design we all know and love.  However, that’s not all.  Primochill also offers an all-new flat design, reminiscent to that of a dimastech testbench. The customizability of the new Praxis WetbenchSX is insane.

As the images above show, there are many similarities between the original Wetbench and the WetbenchSX. However, there are also some vast differences between the original Wetbench and the WetbenchSX. For starters, the original Praxis Wetbench could hold up to a 360mm radiator, without modifications of course. The Praxis WetbenchSX can hold up to four 480mm radiators. Now many people I’ve told this have the same reaction, why or that’s overkill. Now maybe from a PC builders’ point of view, four 480mm radiators on what is technically a test-bench may sound like a bit much. However, as someone who tests hardware for a living, I see options.

For testing purposes, one of the biggest drawbacks to the original Praxis Wetbench was in regard to reviewing AIO coolers. The Praxis Wetbench was more designed with custom water-cooling in mind. So, to use the Wetbench in the way it was designed, the average AIO cooler wouldn’t work as the tubing was never long enough. There were a few exceptions such as the EK Predator and the H Series from Swiftech. However, this was due to the ability to change out the tubing as both use standard tubing and G ¼ fittings. This is no longer a concern due to the design and array of options Primochill now offers with the all-new Praxis WetbenchSX.

The slanted version Praxis WetbenchSX looks much like the original Wetbench. The WetbenchSX still has the same rear-mounted radiator bracket on the rear of the bench. This rear bracket can hold up to a 480 mm or even a 560 mm radiator externally and a 280 mm bracket internally. However, it has the option for two radiator trays that attach to either side of the motherboard tray. Each tray can hold up to a 480-millimeter radiator. This takes care of the problem of not being able to mount an AIO cooler to the back radiator bracket. At least in the way it was intended to be mounted. The Praxis WetbenchSX has been tested with AIO coolers with up 13 inches. The WetbenchSX comes with anti-vibration pads for each radiator bracket, as well as the power supply.

In addition, there is also mounting for up to a 480-millimeter radiator on the bottom of the test bench next to the power supply. There are also two spots on the motherboard tray for mounting gooseneck fan brackets. I haven’t confirmed this, but from the images, it looks like the gooseneck can hold a 120 mm or 140 mm fan.

There are plenty of options for storage as well. The Praxis WetbenchSX has mounting for up to four hard drives or SSDs. You can also install not one, but two 5.25” drives as well. The motherboard tray has mounting options for MITX, mATX, ATX and eATX motherboards. For a power supply, the WetbenchSX can hold power supplies up to 300 mm in length. On either model, there are mounting options for pump and reservoir combos for just about any company you can think of. Thermaltake and EK just to name a couple. The sides also have holes for G ¼ bulkhead fittings, if you decide to mount a radiator on the bottom of the test-bench.

While at Pax East 2020, we actually came across the all-new Praxis WetbenchSX in the wild. At the PNY booth, Primochill had a system on display running an i9 9900k on an EVGA Z390 Dark. The graphics cards is a PNY RTX 2080 ti XLR8 Overclocked. The GPU has a custom-designed Kobe Bryant themed back-plate made by V1 Tech and it looked amazing.

The system is running two PNY CS3030 2 TB NVMe M.2 SSDs. For memory, the system is running a 32 GB kit of PNY XLR8 DDR4. The system is powered by a 1200 watt EVGA Supernova P2 80+ Platinum power supply. As for water cooling, the CPU and GPU blocks are both made by Bykski. Bykski, a little known company that has been killing it with their water blocks as of late. The system is using all Primochill fittings. Two Primochill 360 ML CTR2 reservoirs are equipped with D5 pumps. Two 420 mm Eximo radiators from Primochill round out the cooling. And of course, the slanted version of the new Primochill Praxis WetbenchSX.

It’s very rare that any product actually lives up to the rumors and hype that surround it pre-release. Product delays, for whatever reason, don’t help. However, the all-new Praxis WetbenchSX not only lived up to my expectations but far surpassed anything I could have fathomed. I had a vision in my mind as to what the new Wetbench would look like. To be honest, the slanted design is similar to what I had expected. But the flat design is what blew my mind.

I love that Primochill is now offering more than one design to their Wetbench. As much as I like the slanted design, from a workflow point of view, the flat design makes more sense. The only problem I have now is where to put not one more test-bench, but two. At the time of writing this article, we are still unaware of the release date or pricing on the Praxis WetbenchSX. We will share that information as soon as it’s available to us.

My father’s stories often feel self perpetuating. Memories of his youth consist mostly of war, fleeing south from the northernmost part of what was at the time just Korea, before the border divided the two halves forever. I never understood why my father would cry when he would sing “Edelweiss” from the famed American 1950’s musical, The Sound of Music, during our at-least-once-weekly karaoke sessions (on LaserDisc) at home during my childhood. I learned only later it was a song to signify an unfulfilled longing for a lost homeland, the titular family singing it together as they escaped their country for another. Decades later, when he was able to return to North Korea as a US citizen on a heavily guarded American tour, did the actualization of this become clear.

A few days in, he was making to board the bus, then immediately jumped off, running down a side street to duck into a shop and beg a startled shopkeeper to exchange North Korean currency for his crisp $100 US bill, worth probably a year’s wages on the black market. What he held then in his hand, bills and coins he had hoped to recognize and didn’t, made clear that every last remaining memory of his birthplace had been erased and was gone. My mother received an early morning phone call from the American embassy in Seoul that my father had been detained by North Korean authorities. He was released a day later on the grounds that he had had an amnesiac episode and thought he had gotten on the wrong bus.

Beyond all this, (even the time he was punched by an orangutan while on safari), the most shocking was when he flew to Seoul, exhumed his parents to have them cremated, and put their ashes into a black garbage bag, smuggling them onto a plane back to the States; too expensive to do it legally, he said, but out of respect put them in my backpack, not my suitcase. Later when detained at the airport for having ash residue, related bomb-making material, on the right-side handle of his bag, he barraged his interrogators with photos and videos of his recent hike into the Bukhansan mountains. Exhausted by the formalities of having to entertain an elder’s rambling musings, they let him go without ever checking his backpack.

What is this urge to displace the ashes of my ancestors from their land, divided as it is, to a foreign land simply because my father has now lived in it twice as long. What does the land you’re from matter in a time of total dispersal, where the wellness industry loves to tout “groundedness” but encourages a nomadic and freelance lifestyle, grotesquely cheap flights allowing even more mobility, and essentially, more useless travel. As a result, globalization is rampant and everywhere now looks like nowhere. Then, the “right” wants a return to nationalism, in extreme cases a return to “blood and soil”. But what they don’t understand is that immigrant and refugees’ lands will become uninhabitable due to the developed world and so these waves of migration are imminent and will be inevitable. And what does this matter in the face of how the Anthropocene is a Joke where all of recorded humanity is barely an event let alone a self referential epoch. The ego it takes to think that all our trace pieces of plastic (recycle!) won’t eventually be subsumed by nature, slowly creeping and growing over every crappy condo built of drywall and cheap asphalt roads we’ve created, Earth’s geological and psychological layers squeezing out any trace of our over all existence. Though we all fantasize of a future where advanced beings will be curiously wandering and picking through our ruins the same way anthropologists have for the last millennia, as we make our way skyward towards other inhabitable planets, we’d be lucky if even a tiny scrap of these great Pacific Garbage Patches will be left as a reminder we were ever at the top of the food chain.

Last time I was in Los Angeles with Phillip, our lives coincidentally both packed up in boxes, his in my hometown of LA, mine in his of east Germany, we discussed transitions and loss and moving towards new beginnings. It was during this conversation we would experience the second and scariest of three earthquakes in four days, an unprecedented number for even expectant Angelenos; our deep rooted hope for apocalypse, with its inevitable regeneration, rebirth, and actual change, trumping the fear of death.

Growing up in Los Angeles, we were all enamored with the myth of “The Big One”, an earthquake guaranteed to flatten the city and bring about, along the fault lines, an apocalypse of sorts. The only preparations we were taught as children was “duck and cover”, a remnant of protection methods against atomic bomb attacks in the 50’s. If we imagine fault lines as political borders, and humanity’s current collective anxiety for the apocalypse as the “The Big One”, we have learned and taught nothing since then, beyond a self centered duck and cover mentality. While concentration camps for children comfortably exist in our current and crumbling superpower, and Iceland mourns the death of a 700 year old glacier how can we rally for climate change activism in a genuine way. At its core, isn’t it geared towards preservation for future generations; “for the children”, as it were.

The Man in the High Castle, a crappy Amazon produced television show based on Phillip K. Dick’s dystopian novel of the same title, uses the song “Edelweiss” as its intro tune, chopping and screwing it to infuse sinister, Nazi undertones. It’s hard today not to read the lyrics in a White Ribbon2 way, about the supremacy of white children, I suppose. But in this extreme culture of political correctness, I’d rather allow my aging immigrant Korean father to project his lifelong feelings of disruption, displacement, and death onto a musical made for white people. The lyrics can still loom large over the loss of land, the loss of lives had, and the long, sad farewell to what one knows will never exist in the same way again, all this as the film’s seven white siblings illegally cross country borders in hopes of a brighter future, but also even, any future at all.

Black Girl Pilates: My Catalyst for Strength

Fitness has always been important to me. I am the middle child and only girl between two boys who were competitive athletes. Growing up, I was very athletic, although I never competed in any sports until much later in life.

I was an avid lifter in college, at a time where aerobics were quite popular. While I chose to complete a degree in social work, I still enjoyed fitness and hoped to pursue it in some way.

Working out was also one of my tools to cope with depression and anxiety. Not only did it help me tremendously, but it inspired me to find a way for others to experience this same freedom I was feeling through fitness.

The question for me then was what I would do, specifically. It wouldn’t be until several years later — and two kids — that I would find my fitness calling.

How I Found Pilates

I was first introduced to Pilates — a system of exercises which puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance — in 2006. A friend of mine, who was convinced I’d love it, invited me to attend a class taught by Cynthia Shipley, a Romana’s Pilates certified instructor who also happened to be my daughter’s ballet teacher at Harlem School of the Arts.

I had never even heard of Pilates before, but considering that I was already physically strong from weight training, and that I was also taking a ballet class — despite the fact that it left me with pain in my left hip, which was diagnosed by my chiropractor as the result of a muscular imbalance — I figured Pilates would be easy.

My first Pilates class was the most difficult class I had ever taken, but I felt stronger, more flexible, and more mobile afterwards.

My chiropractor strongly suggested that I continue taking classes and, after a few weeks, my body changed and I no longer experienced pain in my hip. I kept attending class twice per week and, with encouragement from Cynthia Shipley, I decided to pursue a certification in Pilates.

In 2007, I received my Pilates Mat certification and, later in 2008, I became comprehensively certified on the equipment, both from Core Pilates NYC. I was ready to go and excited to change lives, particularly in my community of Harlem. I wondered why my Black community did not know about Pilates and its benefits, and was committed to becoming an example I had rarely seen.

For five years, I taught two weekly Pilates mat classes attended mainly by Black women. It later dawned on me that although my students had the luxury of having a Black woman as a Pilates teacher, I had rarely met other Black women who taught Pilates. My teacher, Ms. Shipley, was a Black woman. I was one of two Black women in my certification class of 12. In my first two years of teaching, I had only met four Black female instructors.

Did Black people not know about Pilates? Was Pilates not meant for Black people?

From Underrepresentation to Organization

As a Black woman, it had become “normal” to not see me represented in fitness or anything else for that matter. Even amongst the many fitness networks, events, gyms and studios that I attended, Black females were few in numbers. This eventually inspired me to write the article Let’s Talk About Black Female Representation in Fitness.

This, however, has been going on forever, beyond the fitness sphere. For decades, America has allowed underrepresentation, white supremacy and white privilege to permeate every aspect of our lives. After a while, it seemed “normal” to see or participate in mostly white spaces.

The idea to create a new space began back in 2010. This group, which I initially named Pilates Instructors of Color, was led by choreographer, lecturer and Pilates teacher Dyane Harvey-Salaam. However, given our busy schedules, it became difficult to meet consistently and the group eventually fell off.

The good thing was that I had met a few other Black women who were Pilates instructors. Still, as I continued to teach, it was still a rarity to meet very many of us. I looked at all the major Pilates platforms and rarely if ever saw representation of the amazing women whom I had met in this group.

I still felt there had to more Black women out there teaching Pilates. One of the “Elders of Pilates” — the original students of Joseph Pilates who then went on to become instructors themselves — was a Black woman named Kathy Stanford Grant. I thought that her presence had surely influenced the Black community, and that therefore there had to be even more Black female instructors as a result.

I went through an 8-month period of doubt and depression from the fall of 2016 to the spring of 2017. Since I had not seen very many Black instructors, I felt it was my purpose to be the pioneer of Pilates in my community of Harlem. At the same time, part of me felt I was just spinning my wheels. I was doubting my ability as a Pilates Instructor and wondered if I was really meant to teach.

Was I really going to change my community’s lives? Was I going to die with an unfulfilled purpose? I had an awesome support system of friends and family who encouraged me to remain persistent, yet my tearful prayer to God was to show me what I was to do next.

So many events happening in our nation were centered around white privilege, white supremacy and racism, as well as the systematic underrepresentation of people of color. I was angry at myself for allowing this “normalcy” to continue even though I saw it and knew it was happening. I was also saddened that given the increasingly outspoken nature of white supremacy in America, as well as the murders of innocent Black men, women and children, White America still seemed to want a status quo. I certainly didn’t want a status quo so I asked myself what was I going to do about it.

I consulted with my friend Catrice Jackson, Founder of SHE Talks | WE Talk, a deep, honest and truthful dive in the issues of race, racism, whiteness, white supremacy and intersectionality. Her encouragement helped renew my passion for bringing Pilates to my Black community and was the catapult to create Black Girl Pilates in May 2017.

The Creation of Black Girl Pilates

After collecting almost 50 instructor names with the help of some Instagram friends, I set up a Facebook instructor support group and added the women I already knew. We needed a space to rejuvenate, discuss successes, difficulties and sometimes racist microaggressions: Black Girl Pilates was born! After much thought, I wrote the following mission statement:

Black Girl Pilates (BGPi) is a space for Black/Afro Latina women who teach Pilates to share ideas, successes and struggles as instructors and teachers within the business of the method. We will also identify and dismantle areas where we are left out, i.e. magazines, social media, conferences, trainings etc., and confront those entities regarding the lack of Black women in these spaces.

I, as the founder, took it on to specifically address platforms that had little representation and open a discussion as to why there was none: I had enough women to fill a magazine, a studio, a conference and anything else they needed — there was no excuse as to why these organizations should not have Black representation!

I also knew that our Black communities, who thought Pilates was specifically for white women, needed to see us. We would be bring Pilates to them.

Currently, the BGPi support group has 150 members representing 6 countries. At the publishing of this article, we will have had our first official Black Girl Pilates instructor meet up in New York City. We currently have an Instagram feature page with over 1000 followers and plan to add a Facebook page, website and blog in the very near future.

Of course, the creation of BGPi didn’t go without its challenges. After my Girls Gone Strong article was published, more people became aware of Black Girl Pilates, and I received some backlash: I was called a “racist” because I had a group specifically for Black women who teach Pilates, and a post was written in a Pilates forum questioning the validity of the BGPi group, stating we were “separatists and the founder of this group needed to have her head checked.” Despite these negative instances, we have many more people who love that we exist and have personally sent Black female instructors to the group.

I had finally found my sisters who had similar experiences as me and needed support and mentorship from other Black women who teach Pilates.

From a physical strength standpoint, Pilates has been my go-to exercise when I could do nothing else. Whether I was depressed or recovering from lifting injuries, Pilates was my meditation and sanctuary.

Just as Girls Gone Strong is a platform that encourages women to be the strongest you they can be, because strength comes in all shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities and is non-gender conforming, Pilates was my catalyst of strength to create Black Girl Pilates.

It gave me the courage to write articles speaking out against underrepresentation, white supremacy and white privilege in the fitness industry, be open about my battles with depression/anxiety, encourage body positivity and be a proud example to my Black community that Pilates is for us and taught by us.
