Hey I am low-key starting to freak out about heading to Korea (got that 2019-2020 ETA grant). Some advice for things to pack/leave at home? General expectations? Will I die if I don't speak Korean?
Omg another anon! I鈥檓 so happy that my blog is finally starting to reach people. Congrats on your grant anon!!
Okay, first of all, no need to panic.聽
The first six weeks of orientation is basically summer camp. Enjoy the safety net of 80+ other English speakers your age and take shelter in the nice Yonsei dorms. You鈥檒l have plenty of time to learn Korean, get into the habit of bowing, and retune your digestive tracts to accommodate spicy food.
But I understand. I too was once in your shoes鈥攁nxious, eager, and hungry for information.
Your program coordinator will send you a bunch of information that鈥檒l help, including what to bring and what not to bring. Some American snacks that are hard to find in Korea: Hot Cheetos, Ruffles, Cool Ranch Doritos, Sour Patch Kids, Reese鈥檚 PB Cups. Korea has Doritos and Sunchips but they taste different.
You will not die if you don鈥檛 speak Korean. You鈥檒l be split up into different levels at Orientation. As for the rest of the grant year, you definitely don鈥檛 need to be a master at Korean to survive, but it will help you in all aspects of your life here if you do your best to learn.聽
I think Orientation will give you enough time to get used to the idea of living in Korea. By the end of the six weeks, you鈥檒l be itching to leave the dorms and go out and explore the country. Then you鈥檒l get your homestay family info, and school info鈥鈥檓 so excited for you!!聽
And if you haven鈥檛 already, you can also watch my Fulbright videos (Orientation, Day in the Life) if you want a closer look into what your experience could be like!聽
tl;dr Don鈥檛 freak out! Living in a foreign country is a big step but it鈥檒l be fun!聽
Sending you lots of love and good vibes ~~
