   Kaeya's first thought is that he's returning the gentleness of last afternoon.

   Wriothesley rarely receives without giving in kind- and he thinks that it's the sweetest thing in the world, with his cheeks already tinting red. ' go ahead, ' a flustered captain encourages him, undoing the tie keeping his ponytail together and letting a cascade of cobalt fall over his bare back- all his to braid.

   it's very relaxing to have his hair played with- it's the Duke who allowed him to discover this, running rugged fingers through cobalt locks with a gentleness that nobody would suspect at first glance- and that couldn't be compared to the little hands sometimes tugging at strands of Klee, the only comparison he had.

   the first time Wriohesley was able to make him fall asleep just with this little trick, Kaeya awoke not wanting to leave the bed- but they're awake now, and his future husband knows what he's doing. of course he does- this is not his first hair-braiding rodeo, with all the siblings he had...

   there's a twinge of sadness in the action, now, that colors it bittersweet.

   it's supposed to be a single braid, he thinks as a comg begins undoing the morning snags and knots in his hair- luckily, there's very few, the conditioner he brought over and left in Wriothesley's bathroom for them both to use smoothing his locks enough to avoid a disaster. it's just a little tug that he feels, with the careful Duke making sure that he exploits a little trick to avoid unpleasant pain. 

   as soon as those skilled fingers touch his scalp, Kaeya's eyelids grow heavy.

   he doesn't quite fall asleep- he's drowsy and happy and warm, and there's a faint chuckle near his ear murmuring something about finding another one of his weak spots, and in reply he receives an happy mumble and an attempt to steady himself to let him work better. this is where he lets sleep overtake him, half-assedly apologizes... he's apologizing for...

   but in the end, Kaeya can't remember what for; when he cracks his eyes back open, he's curled in strong, warm arms, surrounded by the scent of good leather and a familiar pleasant scent and an arm snaked around his waist, keeping him steady while his husband seems to be busy with paperwork.

   he can't see it yet- but his hair has been braided to perfection, a fresh calla lily at the base of a fine braid curling in a loop around the back of his neck. perhaps it's ungratefyl- but he might just go back asleep...

Robin Trower - "Love's Gonna Bring You Round" From the album In City Dreams (June 19, 1977)

This album is a rather dramatic change for Trower. Not only does the cover look like they'd've used for a 12" disco single, there is definitely a sleazy patina of echoplex and smooth jazz lacquered over everything. Just learned today that they'd actually brought in a bassplayer more familiar with the funk; James Dewar, whom anyone familiar with Trower knows was quite the serviceable bassist, is only singing on this one, and the bottom is provided by one Rustee Allen, late of Sly and the Family Stone.

The Robin Trower Band, no longer Power, and no longer Trio.

In a way, the circumstances remind me of the way Jeff Beck went from BBA to Blow by Blow. Trower, too, is softening up, leaving the blues rock behind but taking all his technique with him. And certainly, a player of Trower's talent and stature should do whatever the hell he wants to try. But where the Beck comparison breaks down is in that Blow by Blow is in no way slight, and has plenty of tuneage. Maybe if Trower had covered, oh I dunno, something from Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, In City Dreams would have had a little more gravitas, and a little more songsmithery, both of which it is decidely lacking. It's not a terrible album; if you're fully aware of the album's origin point in time comg in, it's certainly a decent listen, and Trower is always always always going to be a guitarist of tremendous feel and dexterity. The title track I think hangs with some of his best. But maybe the second best tune might be "Sweet Wine of Love," and that one is only as good as it is because of the unabashed cheese factor.
