Valve has released a 25th anniversary update for Half-Life.
Half-Life is free to own on Steam until November 20, 2023 10AM PT / 1PM ET.
Overview
BRAND NEW INTERVIEWS WITH THE HL1 DEV TEAM!
youtube
We got the band back together to celebrate this anniversary, and we invited the fine people at Secret Tape to film it all happening. Getting together after all this time was the perfect opportunity to revisit the game as it existed in its earliest forms, and to talk about how and why it eventually took shape the way it did. Check out the film to see what it was like to be a part of the team, way back then.
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY UPDATE FOR HALF-LIFE INCLUDES:
HALF-LIFE UPLINK
Originally released as a CD exclusive for magazines and hardware manufacturers, this mini-campaign was built by the Half-Life team right after the game went gold. As this was many people's first experience with Half-Life, we thought it was finally time to bundle it with the main game—no sound card purchase necessary.
4 NEW MULTIPLAYER MAPS
Built by Valve level designers, these new maps push the limits of what's possible in the Half-Life engine.
CONTAMINATION
Two-foot-thick steel doors block off access to this contaminated waste facility, which has questionable scientific goals at best. Strap on a gluon gun and roast all intruders.
POOL PARTY
Enjoy a relaxing stay at this abandoned Xen outpost built around a cluster of soothing healing pools free-floating in space. How do you breathe here? It doesn't matter!
DISPOSAL
Processing Area 3, a massive radioactive waste plant gone quiet. Tons of room for you and your colleagues to do experiments with a Tau Cannon or some hand grenades.
ROCKET FRENZY
The creaking weight of this decaying orbital satellite launch facility somehow feels familiar… If we could switch on the oxygen lines, power, and fuel, we might just be able to light this candle.
UPDATED GRAPHICS SETTINGS
Play the game the way it looked in 1998, but on a modern monitor.
Widescreen field of view!
Option to disable texture smoothing on the GL renderer!
Lighting fixes including the long-lost GL Overbright support!
Software rendering on Linux! Crisp colors, animated water, and unfiltered textures!
CONTROLLER AND STEAM NETWORKING SUPPORT
A proper gamepad config out of the box!
Added support for Steam Networking! Invite your friends or join games instantly with no fuss.
STEAM DECK SUPPORT!
We finally put our game through our own “Verified” tests, and... we failed super hard. So we fixed it! After re-testing the game, Half-Life gets to officially wear the green checkmark.
Now you can play Half-Life on the best handheld gaming computer in the world in glorious 800p with improved controls and UI.
UI SCALING SUPPORT FOR HIGHER RESOLUTIONS
The entire UI has been reworked to scale at larger screen sizes. We built most of this stuff for 640x480 CRTs and apparently some of you have upgraded since then.
RESTORED CONTENT
We brought back the classic Valve logo video with its iconic music and reskinned the menu to match the 1998 build.
IVAN THE SPACE BIKER AND PROTO-BARNEY
After all this time we finally shipped the original heroes from the alpha builds of Half-Life, available as multiplayer skins!
AS WELL AS THESE RARELY-SEEN EXTRAS!
In 1999, Valve released a CD called Half-Life: Further Data at retail stores, and we're finally including much of that content.
THREE MULTIPLAYER MAPS
Double Cross
Rust Mill
Xen DM
TWO MP PLAYER MODELS
The Half-Life: Further Data CD also included some multiplayer skins made by the original team; we've brought back this incredible skeleton (now with tintable eyes!) and fan-favorite Too Much Coffee Man.
DOZENS OF SPRAYS
While playing a bunch of multiplayer matches we kept wanting more sprays... So we grabbed several megabytes of them from the Further Data release!
BUG FIXES AND CHANGE NOTES
New Content
Now Verified on the Steam Deck (and our native Linux runtime has been set as the default).
Half-Life: Uplink — the original standalone Half-Life demo — has been added to the game, and is accessible through the "New Game" menu.
Added four all-new Half-Life Deathmatch maps: contamination, pool_party, disposal, and rocket_frenzy
Added three old Half-Life Deathmatch maps formerly available only on the "Half-Life: Further Data" CD: doublecross, rust_mill, xen_dm.
Added Ivan the Space Biker, Prototype Barney, Skeleton, and Too Much Coffee Man as player models to Half-Life Deathmatch.
Added dozens of new sprays formerly available only on the "Half-Life: Further Data" CD.
Added support for Steam Networking, allowing easy multiplayer via Steam's Join Game and Invite features.
Added support for Steam Friends Rich Presence, allowing your friends to follow your journey through Black Mesa.
Nostalgia
Brought back the original Valve Intro video. Can be skipped with the "-novid" launch command.
Updated main menu to a design inspired by the game's original 1998 main menu.
Changed the default models to the original (non "HD") models.
Gameplay Changes
Improved physics for throwing grenades.
Improved randomness for initial spawn points in multiplayer.
Improved satchel charge controls: primary fire now always throws a new satchel, and secondary fire always detonates.
Fixed push-able entity movement being based on framerate.
Fixed players with high framerates freezing in place on death in multiplayer.
Fixed some cases where the player could get stuck in place on level transitions.
Fixed some cases where characters would interrupt important dialogue with their "greetings" dialogue.
Fixed weapon view-bob angles.
Fixed red barrels at the start of Surface Tension not launching as intended.
Fixed Snarks attacking FL_WORLDBRUSH entities (such as func_walls).
Fixed players sometimes failing to deploy a snark while crouching and looking down.
Fixed certain convars ("pausable" and "sv_maxspeed") being set to incorrect values when entering a singleplayer game after a multiplayer game.
Fixed singleplayer auto-aim setting being changed when entering a multiplayer game that disallows auto-aim.
Fixed the flashlight HUD showing empty after loading a savegame.
Fixed rockets in CONTENTS_SKY not always detonating.
Fixed incorrect bullet impact sounds for NPCs.
Fixed gauss gun making a loud static noise if it was charged across level transitions.
Fixed a crash in mods that display keybinds in their UI.
Fixed singleplayer weapons not auto-switching away when exhausted (grenades / snarks / satchels / etc)
Fixed interpolation artifacts when animated models are moved by other entities.
Fixed some buffer overflow exploits.
UI Changes
Main-menu background and buttons have been reskinned, and now scale based upon screen resolution without stretching, supporting background image layouts up to 3840x1600.
In-Game HUD now uses double or triple sized sprites when playing at higher resolutions.
UI dialogs and in-game fonts now scale to improve readability at high screen resolutions.
In-Game HUD HEV suit display has been shifted to the left of the screen, and no longer changes position at larger screen resolutions.
Added an "Enable texture filtering" setting.
Added an "Allow widescreen Field of View" setting to correct non-anamorphic FOVs, for widescreen and ultrawide displays.
Re-organized all the Settings screens to improve legibility, and support controller navigation.
Updated the Pause menu to be aware of the current gameplay mode.
The default server name and multiplayer player name are now based on the player's Steam Persona.
The Steam platform menu has been removed, now that all its features are in Steam itself.
Fixed application icon rendering incorrectly when using the software renderer.
Fixed player and spray images not updating their coloring on the settings screen.
Removed the now very unnecessary "Low video quality. Helps with slower video cards." setting.
Input Changes
Improved support for keyboard and controller navigation everywhere.
Added "Lower Input Latency" option: Synchronizes the CPU and GPU to reduce the time between input and display output.
Fixed issues that caused jerky mouse / joystick input.
(We basically rewrote it all - if you've got a custom Steam Input controller configuration, you should rebuild it from our newly published Official Configuration).
Multiplayer Balancing
Increased the 357 damage from 40 → 50.
Hive Hand reload time has been reduced from 0.5s → 0.3s per shot, and it will be selected at higher priority than the pistol on pickup.
MP5 now always starts it with full ammo when picked up.
Players no longer drop empty weapons, and any that are dropped are reloaded by what's in the dying player's backpack.
Improved client-side prediction to reduce "ghost shots". Like Counter-Strike, consider hitboxes and not just bounding boxes for hits on the client.
Fixed network predicted crowbar swing damage being incorrect.
Rendering
Added supported for UI Sprites and Texture files larger than 256x256.
Added support for UI Font special render modes: "blur" and "additive".
Added setting to turn off texture filtering when using the OpenGL renderer.
Default resolution is now based on the resolution of the desktop, instead of a 640x480 window.
Default gamma has been decreased from 2.5 → 2.2, now that we aren't all playing on CRTs.
Software renderer will now correctly filter out incompatible resolutions, unless there is only 1 resolution available on the display.
Restored OpenGL overbright support.
Fixed fullscreen software renderer crashing on systems that don't support 16-bit color.
Fixed software renderer being stretched when using widescreen resolutions.
Fixed skyboxes and sky color incorrectly carrying over when transitioning maps in multiplayer.
Fixed the game appearing too dark after modifying video settings.
Fixed MSAA in windowed mode.
Fixed mipmap rendering on studio models.
Fixed gluon gun sprite rendering in multiplayer.
Fixed gluon gun sinusoidal noise being incorrect.
Various optimizations to support the newly increased engine limits.
OpenGL optimizations for the Steam Deck.
Engine Improvements for Mod Makers
Increased maximum limit of dynamic sound channels from 8 → 32.
Increased maximum limit of sentences in the sentences.txt file from 1536 → 2048.
Increased maximum number of entities (MAX_EDICTS) from 900 → 1200.
Increased MAX_PACKET_ENTITIES increased from 256 → 1024.
Increased MAX_GLTEXTURES from 4800 → 10000.
Increased software renderer geometry limits: max spans 3000 → 6000, max surfaces 2000 → 4000, and max edges 7200 → 14400.
Cycler and func_button entities can now be the entity target for scripted_sentence entities, and are allowed to speak in multiplayer.
Incorporated func_vehicle entity support from Counter-Strike, for mod-makers to use. Full SDK update will come later, but level designers can use it now.
Native Linux Build
Added support for the software renderer.
Improved font rendering.
Many stability and behavior fixes.
Other
Localization files updated.
Miscellaneous security fixes.
Notes
The previous version of the game has been archived to a publicly visible Beta branch named "steam_legacy", with the description "Pre-25th Anniversary Build." If a mod or feature is behaving in an unexpected way, you may need to run this archived build until the issue is resolved in the default build.
We now consider this anniversary version of Half Life to be the definitive version, and the one we'll continue to support going forward. Therefore, we'll be reducing the visibility of Half Life: Source on the Steam Store. We know Half-Life: Source's assets are still being used by the Source engine community, so it'll remain available, but we'll be encouraging new Half-Life players to play this version instead.
WALLPAPERS
Celebrate 25 years of Half-life by decorating your desktop and mobile phone.

[TRIVIA]
The Prince of Tennis 10.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 11/02/2001
He has his eyes closed most of the time to exude friendliness, but will open them when he’s being cautious or calculating. Konomi states they are usually closed whenever he’s smiling
His mother cooks a lot of Cajun and western dishes, which is why he doesn’t mind eating dubious food
He is very family-oriented and kind to his relatives. When he goes shopping with his sister they are often mistaken as lovers
Konomi wrote him to like spicy food since he wanted him to seem different and unusual
He is nicknamed “Fujiko” by Kawamura after the heroine of Lupin III since the latter is a fan of the series
On Sundays he goes to his grandfather’s photo studio on the outskirts of town to take photos
He tries keeping a smile on his face since he wants to find enjoyment in everything. Even when facing a strong opponent in a match, he thinks of how lucky he is that he’s able to go up against a great player
He and his brother Yuuta do not fight, but they do not talk to each other as often as they used to since Yuuta entered middle school
Although he notoriously likes spicy food, he likes sweets as well. He especially loves the raspberry pie his sister Yumiko makes
Despite being born on February 29th, a leap year, everyone still celebrates his birthday every year. Kikumaru once jokingly said to him “you’re only three years old!”
His personality is described as someone who’s very calculating while wearing a smile
Konomi describes him as “growing more on his own,” since at the time he was growing increasingly popular and took on a life of his own
The Prince of Tennis 20.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 12/04/2003
He is known to be very attentive and can make friends of all types
He keeps his room neat and orderly
He could not handle drinking “Aozu” in Genius 159 due to one of its key ingredients being vinegar (he dislikes sour foods)
His secondary sport would be figure skating
The Prince of Tennis 40.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 12/04/2007
He is very competitive and will usually stay calm and undaunted in any situation

He is easily attracted to mysterious things
He is thought to have had strong spiritual powers by nature and has had strange occurrences happen to him
He is often misunderstood due to his mysterious nature, but he is actually very loving, compassionate and easily moved to tears
He had written a research paper on cacti the previous summer that received a lot of praise and attention, even surprising university researchers
He came up with the name “Gatekeeper of Hecatoncheires” for his technique from a book on Greece he had read when he was younger
Konomi had plans for him to transfer to Rikkai, and states he alluded it after his match with Ryoma, but ultimately decided for him to stay at Seigaku. He explains that he wanted him to transfer to grow even stronger and have a serious match against Ryoma
Konomi had originally wanted him to lose against Niou, but decided against it since he had already lost to Shiraishi

He lacks confidence in his physical strength, but states he has no intention of forcing himself to build muscle
He likes relaxing with a cup of coffee when doing laundry
He wishes his younger brother would visit home more often
He is named after Fujiko Mine from Lupin III, and after the manga artist duo Fujiko Fujio since Konomi liked the sound of “Fuji”
Konomi came up with his “Triple Counters” since he wanted Fuji to appear as a genius, and that having more techniques meant the more skilled he was. “Higuma Otoshi” was inspired by an intense ballet drama Konomi had watched that had a major impact on him
Konomi tends to draw him as if his hair is flowing in the wind
Konomi has no desire to change Fuji’s appearance, but depicts him having an inner change and obsession over winning. He describes him as kind, but scary when he’s angry

PUBLIC SERVICE FOR ANY IDOL OTAKU
You might like, want or need this i have for you (these first 2 images were added to caught your attention)
I was checking my digital Idol (H!P) goods database on notion
where i even have a table to see how much i've spend on it
So i decided to make a template
for every harowota (or any idol fan in general, you can just change the decoration, remove/change properties and all) who wants to keep a data
Instructions
Besides clicking the hyperlink on template, whenever you're there and logged in notion, click on duplicate; like this you'll be able to have your own page like this
I put a wish-list whenever you can write down any goods you want as well as a waiting list (the good you're waiting for)
Under that there's the "Idol collection" Database in gallery view. And as you can see, i made many views deppending on the type of good
Let's learn how to add some goods
Whatever view you are in click on "+new"
it will open this, and lets see it in every section
above "untitled" you have "add cover"; i use this to have the good's image as a file or link, and of course on "Untitled" you write the name for the good as you want to (for singles, for example, I write: "Single name" Edition)
On Type you have a variety of categories you can choose to clasify your goods
On date release you can add the release date of the good (if you enable end date, you can make a lapsus, for example to use a tour's dates), i use dd/mm/yyyy, but you can change it
For Group(s) and Idol(s) i added many, you can always add more and delete the existent ones
On other type, you can sub-categorize the goods on the type "Other"
Size was done for photos or clear files, but you could add T-shirts sizes
And lastly you can add if you have it physical (like a CD) or Digital (digital Photobook, or kindle version magazine); and also if you want to sell it, make a giveaway or you're just keeping it for a friend.
and this under that
Now the spendings (you can always delete it)
You can add items, and how much you spent, but be carefull changing the name of the propperties, because you'll need to change the formulas (for "Total USD" the "*0.0013" you'll need to change it every week maybe because it's the currency converter ratio setted up for mine)
You can change the number data currency (it says CLP or USD) while puting your mouse on the number imput and clicking the "123" like this
To share the page click on share, show share options, and there you can disable/enable whatever you want, lastly "Copy link page" and you have it ready to share to friends
Hope it works for you and you like it!

Shining Force Translations/Loreposting masterpost
About time I tried to organize all the rambling i do here.
Update: also organizing things even better on a website on Neocities, it’s still a work in progress but I hope to one day just replace this entire mess of links with it.
For now though, the mess of links below is the best we’ve got.
Shining Force:
partial translation of character bios from the Shining Force Encyclopedia (original scans here)
translations of the Shining Force Kouryaku no Tebiki Book (original scans here), starting from the character bios, then getting to Max’s diary, the epilogue interview with Nova, and the Country Guide.
translations of the Shining Force World Book (original scans here)
partial translations of the Shining Force Data Collection from Beep Megadrive magazine
Write up on the japanese pre release coverage of the game, including plenty of changed/removed content
Write up on unused content in the game seen through a ROM editor.
Some further investigation on unused content visible with walk through wall cheats: Khris’ scandalous secret line, unused NPCs in Alterone, and weirdness in chapter 7 and the debug mode (note: i have since then sadly confirmed that lines related to the unused event in Metapha are sadly removed in the JP version as well).
The unused content info is also summarized on TCRF as well.
that one post where i ramble a lot about the ending, including the japanese/english differences
All HQ quotes in the japanese and english versions
All special quotes from the ship HQ of Chapter 5, japanese and english versions
Bloodline of the Sacred Dragons novel translation [ongoing]
Shining Force CD/Gaiden 1 & 2:
Discussion and retranslation of the initial characters’ introduction scene
Sadposting about Hindel plus a small correction to the localization
tfw you don’t have money for treatment in Book 3
Hanzou’s bio from the Guide Book
Natasha is Nick’s cousin according to the SFCD manual
Origin of Apis’ name
Final Conflict:
Translation of all HQ quotes. From what I’ve seen these were mistranslated in the fan translation patch.
Sprite rips and comparisons between the original graphics and the sprites from Shining Force Chronicles 3, the lost mobile version of the game.
Darksol concept art
A few scenes from the start
Me crying about the ending
Unused spell indexes
The Natadecoco/Yogurt lore...
Not mine but worth linking here: the only footage of Shining Force Chronicles 3 I’ve ever found.
Shining Force 2:
All HQ quotes in the japanese and english versions, plus some related stuff from a guide book
Translation of the encyclopedia. You gotta put up with some rambling at the start because i didn’t put that in a different tag my bad.
Manual translations (The prologue and character bios). Also includes a retranslation of the lore dump of Tristan and discussion of the names changed by localization.
Write up of the japanese pre release coverage of the game, including plenty of early build screenshots. The post is currently broken and cannot be edited, but unlike what it says I won’t be making a second part, there are only a few screenshots missing and I’ll put them on TCRF later and link it here.
Bloodline of the Sacred Dragons novel translation [ongoing] (listed it twice in the post since it takes place between SF1 and SF2 with plenty of characters and elements from both)
Sadposting about Hawel
Observation about the Granseal escape sequence that haunts me
Ramblings and love for Zynk
Oddeye’s concept art/beta design
My gameplay of the japanese version. I didn’t make an specific tag for it so you gotta scroll past a few english posts first, my bad. Also I stopped the playthrough at Red Baron. Overall take translations in this one with a grain of salt because it’s messy and old.
Japanese and english versions of the conflict with Oddeye
Me trying and failing to understand the lore dump at Hassan
Fairly important cut line from Zynk
Shining Force GBA:
The english version’s odd obsession with giving relatives to people
HQ dialogue
English Nova forgets Anri exists
Shining Wisdom:
Guide Book translations
Interview snippet from before the game’s launch that says Final Conflict characters were meant to have a cameo appearance there
Shining in the Darkness:
JP manual and intro translation, plus a mention of Dark Dragon in a magazine
Shining Soul 2
Translation of the prologue and bios of the playable characters from the guide book and official website
Translation of bios of the town NPCs
Translation of bios of the boss characters
Masterpost about the lost mobile games
The general tag for discussing localization stuff
My playthroughs. Note that back at some of those playthroughs I hadn’t yet dived into guides and lore and stuff so they might have mistakes and stuff, I’m not linking them as a source of info, just as a source of fun:
Shining Force
Shining Force CD
Final Conflict
Shining Force 2
Shining Force GBA
Shining Soul
Shining Soul 2, mostly with a Slade sprite hack
Shining Wisdom
Landstalker
#shining series#shining force#shining force cd#shining force 2#shining force final conflict#shining force masterpost#about damn time#shining soul#shining soul 2#god it's so sad how sf2 is mostly my thoughts and zero actual info#i checked three strategy guides and none of them have anything interesting#obviously desktop kingdom people at least have things in the novel but... haha#shining in the darkness#landstalker

this is my current bsd collection with (almost) every piece of media from bsd LOL, a little bit of backstory:
i have a thing for data collecting (I'm a data hoarder hiding as a data preservationist basically 😭), and l frequently have like.. episodes? where i become convinced that [insert media here] will be erased forever and i have to have it physically to know it existed, usually at night and just with things I'm into. it struck bsd last night so i barely slept because i was collecting it all lmao. my hard drive #struggles everyday but i don't like to delete anything because yk, hoarding
almost all of this goes thanks to bsd-bibliophile's website, and i usually share anything I've collected amongst friends (but never the light novels where the translator asks you don't distribute, obviously).
While a lot of it attaches to me having to have media physically that is already widely distributed online, i also love collecting underground media on promotional DVDs, certain game editions and CDs etc (an example of this is my youtube @hatsuneuploads where i uploaded all of a special edition of the DTM magazine for the release of rin and len - a previously (presumably) not on the internet interview with some voice providers and a cubase official was uploaded by me which i was super happy to have done!! i also uploaded the DVD so anybody willing to find out what some of the songs are (over 50)/translate the interviews that would be very cool!)
irritatingly, a lot of the uploads for the light novels and most of the manga were in pdf format, when for light novels epub is the most widely accepted format (some were uploaded in epub which i am working on finding and downloading) and manga i much prefer cbz files (i might look into converting them).
I am also into book binding, so it is definitely on the table for me to book bind some of the light novels (but i kind of find issue with it personally when i can support the official English physical releases, so i might just book bind the way i like AFTER i have the money to purchase the official books)
also to note i would absolutely die for the manga set but i don't have the money rn 😭😭😭😭 its ok tho i will one day LOL
anyway its not much but i just like to talk about these things a lot cuz its interesting yk!!! and i'm such a bad fiend right now, I've been hooked on it since 2019 and it kind of comes and goes in waves lmao
#ranting#bsd#just me talking about data preservation and things#its so important like do you know how much lost media becomes lost again because it was taken off youtube? just outrageous when that could#have been fixed if someone had simply downloaded it..#(im insane)#ok thanks for reading its just be being funnnyyy

Hot New Releases - Wipeout 3 on Game Players Vol.121(Video game magazine)(Hong Kong)(26/02/2000)
Translation in English:
Playstation 1
Manufacturer: SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT Price: 5800 Yen Memory: at least 1 BLOCK Release date: on sale Capacity: CD-ROM 1-2 Players / Compatible with DUALSHOCK/Compatible with NEGCON
The fastest race in human history
The original future racing game "WIPE OUT" has been released for three episodes, The graphics and fluency of the game are definitely not inferior to other PS racing games. Maybe because the background of the story is the future, some functions can be saved. As for the quality of the game itself is not bad, and you can use weapons to attack opponents, readers who like this kind of future racing may wish to play.
Operation method (for hand button)
As this game is not a normal racing car, so the operation is a little different from the normal racing car (in fact, just use a few more buttons), and now will introduce its operation method:
← Turn left → Turn right ↑ Up ↓ Down □ Use Weapons △ Change the viewpoint X speed up O Give up weapons L1 Rear Viewpoint R1 HYPERTHRUST L2 LEFT AIRBRAKE R2 RIGHT AIRBRAKE
Game play and Tips
The gameplay is basically not much different from that of regular racing, but the game has weapons, energy (that is HP) and HYPERTHRUST, which are relatively rare (or almost non-existent) in regular racing games, so there are obviously more things to pay attention to. The way to get weapons is to drive through the floor of those special colors, if the floor is purple, the weapons obtained are used for attack (such as MINES, ROCKETS, etc.), yellow is the auxiliary system (such as HP absorption, automatic control, shields, etc.), the appearance is random, so if you are not satisfied, you can press 〇 to give it up and take it again (you can also press the button to release it in use). As for blue, you won't get any weapons, but it will increase the speed of the car (for a short time), and you can move at high speed for a short time with HYPERTHRUST. HYPERTHRUST is a HP-consuming acceleration method, so do not use it recklessly, or the car will be easily crashed.
Weapons List
AUTO-PILOT: It can be operated automatically within a certain period of time after starting, and can be used to handle troublesome corners.
FORCE WALL: Creates a force field that resists magnetic enemies on the track, which can be destroyed.
CLOAK: It will not be LOCK-ON by enemy vehicles within a certain period of time after starting.
ROCKET: A missile fired forward.
GRAVITY SHIELD: It will not take damage for a certain period of time after activation.
MULTI-MISSLES Shoots guided missiles that can be LOCK-ON.
REFLECTOR: It can reflect the attack of enemy vehicles for a certain period of time.
QUAKE DISRUPTOR: The track shakes, but the car in front is injured, and the destructible objects can be destroyed at the same time.
ENERGY DRAIN: Absorb energy from nearby enemy vehicles.
PLASMA BOLT: Hitting an enemy vehicle immediately destroys it, and destructible objects can be destroyed at the same time.
MINES: Releases floating mines behind the car, which can be destroyed.
Basic game mode introduction
SINGLE RACE Players compete with other cars on the track. The number of enemy cars can be freely adjusted in the OPTION (optional). If the CHECKPOINT is not reached within the time limit, it will be GAME OVER. If the energy is insufficient, it can be replenished at the PIT.
TIME TRIAL There is only one opponent in this mode, and no weapons will appear at the same time, but it is the same as SINGLE MODE and reach CHECKPOINT within the time limit. Like similar games, this mode has a "ghost car", but the conditions for it to appear are other than completing this mode , but also use 2 BLOCK to record data.

And if you didn't know this ahead of time and didn't bring a book because you were planning to download an ebook once you got some wifi?
I'm not saying we're entitled to free wifi everywhere. Not at all. But being sanctimonious and patronizing about not providing it? Especially in a coffee shop? Kind of gross.
Before smartphones, I always had a book in my bag. Always. Because I would have been so uncomfortable in a public place without reading material and/or having my tape or cd player with headphones.
I'm quite happy to have my books and music/white noise inside the tiny package of my phone, and I do try to always have something downloaded for offline use in case I need it.
People act like before smartphones everyone was cheerfully chatting with strangers in public places. I was there, Gandalf, I assure you they were not.
There were newspapers and magazines EVERYWHERE so that people didn't have to sit and stare uncomfortably at strangers in lines, waiting rooms, trains, etc.
Every flat surface in public spaces was covered with "ignore other people" materials.
My laundromat still has a shelf of books (including for kids) and magazines. Because ain't nobody gonna talk to people in the laundromat. Even if their phone died and they don't have a charger.
Human beings just don't have the energy to be social constantly in public. And with so much of our lives spent in public whether we want it or not, we have to be able to create private bubbles for ourselves within the public spaces. That's what phones and headphones and books and magazines and TVs in doctors offices and fish tanks in dentist offices are for.
And do you know who are most actually adversely affected by lack of free wifi?
Folks who don't have internet at home (unhoused folks, poor folks, rural folks)
Folks who don't have mobile data plans, or have limited data (children, poor folks, folks who use pay as you go phones - often poor, unhoused, or other difficult living situations)
Folks who have financial security/independence can use their cellular data, either on their phone or as a hotspot for a computer. They probably didn't even notice there's no wifi, or it's just a slight inconvenience. They can still crank up that laptop and do whatever they want.
It's just the folks who can't do that who are affected by this stingy business and their petty sign.
They act like I’m really not about to walk over to Starbucks lmfao

What Happens If You Include Non-Specified Items In USPS Media Mail?
USPS Media Mail is a cost-effective shipping option designed for educational materials, making it a popular choice for shipping books, DVDs, and other media. However, the service comes with strict guidelines on what can be sent. Including non-specified or prohibited items in Media Mail can lead to complications, additional fees, and even legal consequences. Understanding the rules and the potential ramifications of non-compliance is essential for anyone looking to use this shipping method.
What is USPS Media Mail?
Media Mail is a service provided by USPS that allows for the affordable shipping of educational and media-related items. This service is often used by students, teachers, and sellers to ship books, music, and digital media across the country at a lower cost than standard shipping options. However, due to its reduced cost, USPS enforces strict regulations on what qualifies for Media Mail.
Permitted Items for USPS Media Mail
To qualify for Media Mail, items must meet certain criteria. Accepted items include:
Books (at least 8 pages long)
Sound recordings and video recordings, such as CDs and DVDs
Printed educational charts
Printed music and scripts
Play scripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals, and music
Educational reference materials, such as standardized tests and their manuals
Computer-readable media (like CDs containing educational data)
These items should primarily be for educational or informational purposes.
What are Non-Specified Items?
Non-specified items are products that do not fall under the allowed list for Media Mail. Some common non-specified items include:
Magazines with advertisements
Newspapers
Catalogs and promotional brochures
Merchandise (such as toys, clothing, and electronics)
Personal letters or documents not related to the permitted media items
Consequences of Including Non-Specified Items
Inspections and Delays USPS reserves the right to inspect any Media Mail package to ensure compliance. If a package is flagged for inspection, it can lead to delays in delivery. Inspections may be random or prompted by suspicion, and packages found to contain non-specified items can be held back.
Additional Postage Fees If USPS discovers that non-specified items have been included in a Media Mail shipment, they will charge additional postage fees. This fee will be calculated based on the standard Priority Mail rate, which is significantly higher than the Media Mail rate. The recipient may be required to pay the additional charges upon delivery, or the sender may be billed.
Return to Sender In cases where non-compliant items are found, USPS may return the package to the sender. This not only causes inconvenience but also leads to wasted shipping costs and time. Repeat offenders may face further restrictions from using Media Mail services in the future.
Legal Consequences Although rare, intentionally misusing Media Mail for shipping non-specified items can lead to legal repercussions. Misrepresentation of a package's contents could be considered mail fraud, which carries serious penalties, including fines and potential legal action.
Examples of Common Mistakes
Many people unknowingly make mistakes when using Media Mail. Here are a few common scenarios:
Shipping Toys with Books: If you’re shipping a children’s book with a toy, the toy would be considered non-specified and would disqualify the entire package from Media Mail.
Including Personal Letters: Some users may add a letter with the book or CD, but personal letters are not allowed in Media Mail packages and would result in the package being non-compliant.
Magazines or Comic Books with Advertisements: While printed materials like magazines and comic books might seem eligible, if they contain advertisements, they do not qualify for Media Mail.
How to Avoid Issues When Using Media Mail
Verify Contents Before sending your package, double-check its contents to ensure only permitted items are included. If you’re unsure whether an item qualifies, consult USPS guidelines or speak with a postal worker for clarification.
Separate Non-Specified Items If you need to send non-specified items, consider shipping them separately using another service, such as USPS Priority Mail or First-Class Mail. This way, you can avoid complications and delays.
Properly Package Media Mail Make sure to package your Media Mail items securely. USPS may open and inspect packages, so it’s best to ensure everything is neatly organized and easily identifiable as permitted items.
What to Do If Your Package Is Held for Inspection
If your Media Mail package is flagged for inspection, USPS will notify you. You may be asked to pick up the package and pay additional fees or have the option to remove the non-specified items and proceed with compliant shipping. It is important to respond promptly to avoid further delays.
Understanding the Cost Difference
One of the reasons people attempt to include non-specified items in Media Mail is to save on shipping costs. Media Mail rates are substantially lower than other USPS services. For example, shipping a 5-pound package via Media Mail might cost around $4.67, whereas the same package using Priority Mail could cost upwards of $10. However, the risk of additional fees, returns, and legal issues should outweigh the potential savings from misusing Media Mail.
Alternatives to Media Mail for Mixed Items
If you need to ship a mix of items that include both specified and non-specified products, consider other USPS services:
Priority Mail: This service is faster and allows for a wider range of items. Packages are also insured, providing peace of mind.
First-Class Mail: Suitable for smaller packages, such as letters and parcels weighing under 13 ounces. It’s quicker than Media Mail and more flexible in terms of what you can send.
Parcel Select Ground: For heavier packages, this service can be a more affordable option than Priority Mail and allows for a broader range of items compared to Media Mail.
Conclusion
USPS Media Mail is an excellent service for shipping educational materials at a lower cost, but it comes with specific rules that must be followed. Including non-specified items in your USPS Media Mail Rates package can lead to inspections, delays, additional fees, and even legal consequences. To avoid these issues, ensure that you fully understand what qualifies as Media Mail and always check your packages before sending them. When in doubt, choose an alternative shipping service to avoid complications.

Me, looking at my spouse who started shooting at 12 and was in shooting competitions for a long time, who was an olympic qualified distance shooter, who started hand-casting bullets in his driveway in his early 20s and who then wrote and published a math paper on calculating the volume of bullet shapes without doing derivatives (because he hates derivatives? IDK i don't understand calculus) who started working at a bullet factory in his thirties then started doing ballistics data analysis and developing an automated loader, who did materials testing and development and ballistics testing for a brand of lead free bullets and whose entire job is ballistics, who has a collection of "fun bullets" on his shelf (stuff like howitzer shells) and who has repeatedly said "I don't even really care about guns so much I just really like bullets," who sheds bullets around my house like some women shed bobby pins.
Me, looking at my me, who started working on my high school yearbook at fifteen then worked at a yearbook camp then worked at my college newspaper then worked at my college magazine then was on the board for the state community college journalism foundation then got a job doing layout design at a local paper then started doing print layout work for the local hacker scene then started a literary magazine so I would have something to design then started designing letterhead for fictional companies for fun who literally only doesn't do print layout work anymore because the industry is basically dying, who had a collection of magazines to use as design reference that weighed more than i do and who has a CD with something like 4000 fonts that I keep in the same fire-safe storage bag as the cd with my wedding photos.
*whispers* oh no
I'm certain that if pressed my father, who owns 2k+ laserdiscs, 8 laserdisc players, 5k+ DVDs, who runs a blog where he makes near daily posts about movies and hosts a movie podcast, and who saw Spectre in theaters 27 times because Regal Cinemas offered an unlimited viewing card for fifty dollars, would insist that he is a Fully Normal Adult Man with no divergence, neuro or otherwise. After all what is not normal about doing a job where you have the same daily routine, down to recording the second half of your favorite morning talk show every day so you can listen to it on your commute home and drinking 4 liters daily of the only beverage that tastes good to you that you bring in a cooler that you carry to every one of your classrooms every day, except for in the summer, when you teach summer school and wear a different hawaiian shirt every day because you like them better than every other kind of shirt and have collected enough not to repeat for an entire eight weeks but feel that they break dress code for the rest of the year.
We went on a month-long road trip once and he got thirty tapes and recorded a month's worth of the talk show without listening to the second half so he'd have something to listen to when he was driving each morning on the trip.
He has absolutely no idea why his kids (one of whom was diagnosed as autistic in the 80s and the other was diagnosed with ADHD in their thirties) are so weird or how they got that way.
C'mon, Pops. I learned it from watching you.

Non-Book Materials: Thoughts
To me, the most interesting detail about this data is the sheer quantity of microfiche still held by the Seattle Public Library. Beyond percentage, microfiche accounts for a staggering 68,280 items in the Library's collection. How could this be possible, I thought, in the year 2023?
The answer is simple, and twofold:
The Seattle Public Library is a repository for government documents, and government documents account for 65,000 of that 68,000 figure.
The remainder are primarily reference materials, such as genealogy indexes, historical and biographical works, statistics, and reference manuals.
Additionally, I found it interesting that while a majority of the book materials were targeting a children's audience, the majority of non-book materials were classified as adult materials: adult CDs, adult DVDs, magazines... and let's be honest, no kid is using a microfilm reader. I have more thoughts about the proportion of children's materials in my post on the general collection data, though, so I digress.

Valve just released a 25th anniversary Half-Life Documentary
Valve just released a 25th anniversary update for Half-Life that adds a whole bunch of new content, some welcome quality-of-life upgrades, and even Steam Deck support, according to an announcement on the Half-Life website. Also, you can download the game for free for a limited time. Let’s start with the added content. The game now includes Half-Life Uplink, a “mini-campaign” that was originally available only on CDs from magazines and hardware manufacturers, the company says. There are four new multiplayer maps that Valve says “push the limits of what’s possible in the Half-Life engine.” Valve also added maps and multiplayer character models from a CD called Half-Life: Further Data. Valve added some new settings, too, including the ability to play with a widescreen FOV and support for “a proper gamepad config.” The game’s UI has been updated so that it scales for larger screens. (“We built most of this stuff for 640x480 CRTs and apparently some of you have upgraded since then,” Valve says.) And Half-Life is now Steam Deck Verified, meaning it should work well on the Steam Deck without any fiddling. the new 25th anniversary documentary New features for Half-Life’s 25th Anniversary Update: - Half-Life Uplink, a mini-campaign built by the Half-Life team after the game went gold, which was originally released as a CD exclusive for magazines and hardware manufacturers - Four new multiplayer maps created by Valve’s level designers that “push the limits of what’s possible in the Half-Life engine,” including ‘Contamination,’ ‘Pool Party,’ ‘Disposal,’ and ‘Rocket Frenzy’ - Updated graphics settings, which allow you to “ lay the game the way it looked in 1998, but on a modern monitor” Read the full article

Hey ok um. If anyone goes on the internet Archive to download the CD roms for the February and March PC Magazine 2009 issues I posted recently, be aware even just mounting it to your Windows system will cause something weird to happen with your antivirus. Idk if it's adapted to the modern day, but it hijacks activity in internet explorer (despite that being obsolete, executable data remnants still exist of it on modern windows ;;) which may do some sus things? (Not to mention it does add some crap data to certain file extensions? Based on what I've read??) So uh. Yeah. Just be aware of that if you want to dig around on the files.
#floof uploads#the roms require adobe flash to run properly btw#which has also been discontinued#if someone can get it working I'd love to see what the menu looks like btw#but still tread with caution
