ANTI-POP: My Thoughts
HELLO YES I finally downloaded the new album from Google Play and now I can share my opinion on each song! These are just opinions though, so discussions about the music is more than welcome if you wanna share your thoughts with me, too ^^/
Akki-yagyou - I’ve heard talk of a theory that this song takes place long after the Onibi Series, but at the start of Maha’s Story. I like this idea a lot! - this is definitely one of my favorite original melodies that Masa has written - the song manages to sound grand and sly at the same time
MONTE CLUB HAVANA 🦀 - i really like that the instrumental is already busy when it first begins! a very creative choice on Masa’s part. - i adore the deep voice that Masa gives Miku - Masa is getting very good at utilizing the trumpet in his music, especially when it compliments a more techno-sounding melody
DONDURMA - I disliked this one when I heard it on the crossfade because Miku sounded very strange, but I like it more now that I’ve listened to it thoroughly - she sounds like she’s been drugged, which makes sense given the story behind this song - and I do like how she smooths her intonation out during the song’s verses - is it just me or does this version sound a bit faster than the one sung by LosstimeLife?
DEAD LAND ALICE - hot DAMN that addicting melody - Masa seems to have developed an affinity for the xylophone and it worked out very well in his favor! - i think the placement of words around this melody is unique compared to some other songs of his
Oyuya-Juuban - y’all know I’m a sucker for techno noises combined with traditional instruments - I’m surprised that this one doesn’t seem to be part of a three-part series of traditional-themed songs! Masa’s been favoring those with his albums - the melody kinda reminds me of Usotsukito Kietakimi from the ALBINO album, but it’s not derivative of it
Oiran-Dochu - ohhh Gumi sounds fantastic - i love how Miku’s voice blends with the instrumental during the chorus - that little chiming ending melody at the end gave me chills
STAR LIGHT - the lesbian anthem we all needed - one of my favorite things about this song is how sometimes the vocals are only sounds, highlighting that feeling of trying to reach somebody but not being close enough - seriously tho... as a lesbian that’s been dealing with loneliness for a long long time, this song hits really close to home. and yet, Masa makes it feel like comfort instead of sadness. this song makes me happy despite its sad themes!
RAGE INDIAN - i love that Masa is branching out into different “traditional” sounds and not limiting himself to Japanese instruments! - i could definitely see this being played at a rave - i’m in love with the tempo changes - there are vocals but no lyrics, and that gives it a mysterious kind of feeling - is this the first time that Masa has created a song with no words?
CATRINA - did those girls just say “ore?” help, i’m in love - If memory serves, though, he’s actually used “ore” in lyrics sung by female voices like Gumi and Miku before - i like the exploration Masa seems to have done with this piece! saving the intense instrumentals for between verses isn’t new for him, but it seems to go to a further extent in this song - i find those “oh” sounding vocals that come in shortly after the halfway mark to be very charming - the bass in this song is on a whole new level of catchy
Kuuron-Hantan - i really like the layering of the tracks in this one! the vocals sound “closer” than the instrumental, rather than being louder - the echo on Gumi’s back-up vocals is really good, too - drum beat jumps back and forth and doesn’t give the listener time to catch up with it, thus contributing to the main parts of the song without being a distraction. This concept is not new, but Masa executed it very well!
