Afternoon training sessions have become an unexpected form of entertainment within the OCS. The late afternoon slot, after the flagstones in the courtyard have gone from boiling hot to merely warm, and slanting sunlight paints across the stained glass of the cathedral in sparks of orange-gold.

It’s at that time, as the day fades first to memory then dream, that Mother Superion calls the new recruits to the training mats one by one and wipes the floor with them for a good hour and a half. 

“I didn’t think someone that old could move so quickly.” Today, Ava sits astride the banister ringing the upper cloister, back pressed against a marble column. She’s still flushed from their own training, the messy braid she gathered her hair in to keep it out of the way slowly coming undone. Beatrice tries hard not to stare. “How old is Supes exactly, by the way? Like sixty?” 

Mary makes a disgusted sound deep in her throat.

“What?” Ava raises an eyebrow. The sun is pretty much gone, dipped behind the outer buildings, but a stray reflection crowns her head in fire. Beatrice’s focus drifts from the discussion again. To Ava. To the miracle of having her back by their side. Her side. Until the words Ava adds next. “She’s ancient, right? She gives off that vibe.”

“I don’t think I should ask—” Mary starts.

“You most definitely should not.” Beatrice interjects. She can sort of tell where this is going, and for once hopes to be wrong. 

“—but what vibe do you mean, Ava?” 

“Y’know, the old-dude-in-the-Bible vibe. What’s his face? Methuser-something.”

It’s such a burden to always be right.

“Methuselah.” Beatrice enunciates slowly. She plants both elbows on the banister, leaning in the space left between Ava and Mary. “And I can guarantee Mother Superion isn’t 969.”

“Have you seen her birth certificate or something?”

“Ava—”

“I’m just asking, okay?” Ava throws her hands up, placatingly. “I mean, she’s old, but also hot, kind of? It’s hard to put an actual age on her, really.”

“Please—” Mary is cut off by a yelp and a crash. The three of them look down in unison to see that one of the recruits is sprawling, weaponless, in the middle of a pile of upturned equipment. Camila, who’s overseeing training with Superion for the day, helps the girl up. “— do not say that ever again.” Mary continues. 

“Oh? Are you afraid of the truth?” 

“Both of you shut up and look.” Down below someone new is stepping on the mat, a stave clutched nervously in her hands. “It’s Yasmine’s turn.” 

“Five euros she lasts less than three minutes.” Ava immediately says.

“Ten euros she lasts at least five.” Mary snipes back.

Beatrice shakes her head. “You should be ashamed. Twenty euros and I say she actually disarms Mother Superion.”

“Unlikely.”

“Impossible.”

Beatrice crosses her arms.

“You ought to support your Sisters in times of— wow.” 

Mother Superion does something with her cane that even Beatrice’s eyes can’t follow, and Yasmine stumbles back, unbalanced. Trips on her own feet, ending up much the same way of the previous recruit, except that Yasmine, somehow, has kept a hold of her weapon. 

“You were saying?” Ava, smug as ever, sticks her tongue out.

“She’s still armed.” Yasmine is picking herself up, using the staff like the cane Superion carries with her everyday but has no need of anymore. “It doesn’t count.”

“Fine.” Ava nods. “Looks like they’re going for round two, anyway. Care to add pizza to our little bet?” 

“Double cheese and mushroom from the Italian place in town.” Beatrice says absently. Mother Superion has picked two other girls from the ranks and they’ve surrounded her, circling to find the right opening and strike. “I’m sure Cam will let you borrow the money if you buy her pizza, too.”

“Bold of you to assume that I’ll lose.”

“Bolder of you to assume that you won’t.”

Banter quickly dies off in the face of what next goes on at their feet. It all becomes a blur. Strike, riposte, repeat. The only noise that can be heard is the clak-clak-clak of the staffs clashing as the girls seek to score a first hit. Superion seems able to block everything they can think of throwing at her. 

“Oh,” Someone breathes out a little shakily next to Beatrice’s ear. “I’d totally hit that.”

Jillian Salvius has become, much like the late afternoon spectacles, a permanent fixture in these parts. Most days there’s something that needs mending, some new piece of tech Jillian wants them to try to help them in the coming war. Beatrice always thought it strange so much of it is personally delivered, and Jillian’s (probably unintentional) confession puts the situation under a brighter, blinding light.

“You’d what?” Ava’s voice rings out over the courtyard and training grinds to a halt. Everyone is staring up.

Dusk has extended its cold, blue hand on them all, but even in the fading light Beatrice can tell the tips of Jillian’s ears are heated red. 

“Isn’t that what you young people say?" She shifts on the balls of her feet, awkward, leaning away from Superion's hawk-like line of sight. "I’m trying to stay on top of idiomatic shifts in—” 

“Yeah,” Ava will remark sometimes later, after Mother Superion appeared among them and told Jillian to stay while the rest of them scattered like leaves in a storm. “I bet she’s trying to stay on top of someone alright…”

Ettore Bugatti was one of the first automobile manufacturers to grasp the marketing potential of winning races on Europe’s renowned circuits and road tracks, which brought considerable publicity to his brand. Confident as he was in the capabilities of his new car, even Bugatti could not have predicted that the Type 35 would become the most successful race car in history, achieving 2,500 victories during its active racing career.

The first Type 35, released in 1924, was equipped with a 1,991cc eight-cylinder engine, delivering 90 PS in race trim. By early 1926, Bugatti had increased the engine size to 2,262cc for the Type 35T, named after the famous Targa Florio road race in Italy, which it won, with two smaller-engined Type 35s finishing close behind. Despite this success, Ettore Bugatti realized that to stay ahead of the competition, he needed more than just increased engine displacement. He knew that the future of performance lay in forced induction, even though he was initially not a fan of superchargers, which were seen as inefficient at the time.

“It’s no secret Ettore Bugatti preferred naturally aspirated engines and was not an early enthusiast of supercharging due to its perceived inefficiency,” says Luigi Galli, Specialist for Heritage and Certification at Bugatti. “However, what’s less well known is that Bugatti was forward-thinking about the potential of forced induction, experimenting with superchargers even before the Type 35 debuted at its first race in Lyon in August 1924. In fact, Bugatti applied for French patent number 576.182 on January 22, 1924, for a ‘Compresseur ou pompe à palettes,’ a rotary vane supercharger design that could provide extra power on demand by forcing pressurized air into the carburetor. If Bugatti was going to use a supercharger, he was determined to innovate in his own way.”

As a result, Ettore Bugatti, alongside the Italian engineer Edmond Moglia, developed a unique three-rotor Roots-type supercharger, differing from the common two-rotor designs of the time. This supercharger was strategically mounted on the engine’s offside, which allowed it to warm up more quickly and improve overall engine cooling—a principle that remains relevant in modern engine design. The Type 35TC, where “TC” stands for Targa Compressor, was introduced in late 1926. It evolved into the Type 35B in 1927, featuring a larger radiator and cowling, known as the ‘Miramas’ design, which enhanced cooling capabilities. This configuration enabled the Type 35B to produce up to 130 PS, achieving speeds over 205 km/h (150 mph).

By late 1930, further refinements led to what many consider the ultimate version of the Type 35B. This final iteration featured a twin-cam, two-valve-per-cylinder engine, a twin fuel filler cap, improved suspension, wheels, brakes, and tires, as well as a lower-mounted supercharger relief valve. Bugatti’s relentless pursuit of perfection extended to optimizing every element of the combustion system, from sculpted pistons and cylinder heads to the use of aviation-grade fuel, which boosted the output to 140 PS.

Today, at Bugatti’s atelier in Molsheim, each Bugatti model is hand-assembled with the same meticulous attention to detail that Ettore Bugatti applied to the Type 35. Protests Erupt in Utica After Brutal Police Killing of 13-Year-Old Refugee

Utica, NY — Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old refugee from the Karen ethnic group in Myanmar, had just graduated middle school in the small city of Utica, New York. His family was immensely proud of him, and a picture of him holding his graduation certificate alongside his smiling mother is prominently displayed in their home. The family’s euphoria was violently cut short on the evening of June 28, when Mway and his friend were stopped by three police officers from the Utica Police Department (UPD) and two Oneida County Deputy Sheriffs on their walk home from a Bible study class and a graduation party.  Body camera footage was released by the UPD, but only from three of the officers who were on the scene. The footage shows a pedestrian stop, otherwise known as a stop-and-frisk — a controversial tactic of interrogating and searching someone based solely on “reasonable suspicion.” Mere moments after the police encounter, Nyah Mway starts running down the street. In an edited body cam video released by the UPD, Mway turns toward Officer Bryce Patterson, who is then heard shouting, “He has a gun!” Patterson tackles Mway to the ground and repeatedly punches the boy in the head.  Officer Andrew Citriniti and Officer Patrick Husney were also in pursuit of Mway. While Officer Patterson was still on top of the subdued child, Officer Husney shoots Mway in the chest. The boy starts bleeding out on the sidewalk. One witness who recorded the shooting on her phone can be heard warning the police, “Careful, you’re on camera.” When the shot rings out, the shocked and horrified woman yells, “Oh my God! After the vigil, a spontaneous protest of 100 people gathered in front of the sole police station in the city. The crowd stared down dozens of police officers who had their rifles, handguns, and tasers at the ready, appearing prepared for battle. Have you ever thought of writing an essay or two about your world from the perspective of one of the characters or from the perspective of someone super focused on it?

I sometimes feel temptation to write an essay about the complex relationship between two of my characters in an RP, even if it wasn't written down as a proper WIP or properly explored in said RP.

I don't know why I'm asking. I'm just curious if someone feels the same.

I've actually thought about doing this before, although in a slightly different way. Pavilic academics are different, but simple; you graduate from highschool with your first degree (literally called that, av'Difere) and then you can go on to go to college, if the job you want requires it. There's the standard degrees there, like certifications or masters or bachelors, but once you get up to a doctorate/PhD level, it changes. At that point, your knowledge/devotion to and of a subject becomes tangible; it becomes both a force for you to use, and a show of faith to the world around you and your gods. Because of this, it's called something else, and it takes more work; it's a Sytzetriae, or literally, spirits'through'many. It was commonly anglicized as a Sytzeship, though (which is my excuse for having the idea before my conlang) so they mean the same thing. Now, you might be wondering, why have I talked this much about Pavilic Academics on an ask completely unrelated? Because it is related. Sytzeships require a couple things, slightly changed on which one you're doing: C/A, C/S, C/G, T/A, T/S, T/G, etc. Most of them have the following requirements in common: - 200 hours of experience working in your field, 100 of those mentored by an expert; - Scores of 528 or higher on your last Cast Advancement, Motor Skills, And Activity Assessment (CAMSAAA / CAMS) (Some institutes are trying to phase this out, but some of this stuff is protected under Pavilic legal regulation) - An essay about your given subject that covers how you got here, where you hope to go, and what you bring as a Sytze to your field. that last one's what i've been leading up to. I have a lot of characters who would've studied for their Sytze at some point; mostly under T/S or C/S contracts for stuff like homeland security or engineering or even chemistry. And i've thought, a couple times, about writing out these essays because. fun! And there's also the PDC Archives / Archivae because those are great and technically have files on literally everything including the relationships of the people who work there.
