Cúl an Tí by Seán Ó Ríordáin
(Translation)
The Back of the House (Cúl an Ti)
At the back of the house is a land of youth,
A jumbled beautiful space among
The farmyard beasts unclothed, unshod,
Nor knowing the Irish or English tongue,
Walking the way.
Yet each one grows an ample cloak,
Where chaos is the heart of rule,
And in that land the language spoke
Was taught of old in Aesop’s school,
Long passed away.
Some hens are here, a chicken clutch,
A simple duck, though fixed of mind,
A big black dog with wicked looks
Barking loud like a good watch-hound,
A cat sun-baking;
There, a heap of bric-a-brac,
The cast-off treasure stuff of life,
A candlestick, buckles, an old straw hat,
A bugle quiet, and a kettle white
Like a goose waking.
Here the tinkers come uncouth,
Blessing generously all they see,
Feeling at home in the land of youth,
Seeking cast-off things for free,
All over Ireland.
I would go back in the dead of night,
The treasure gilded in the moonbeams’ reach,
Perhaps to see in the eerie light
The child-wise Aesop’s phantom teach
His ghostly learning.

Early concepts for the characters in Cúl an Tí.
I wanted to design fairy folk that weren’t the typical wings-and-wands type. These are inspired by Irish folklore, especially the stories about them getting up to mischief!
I was also testing out how the design would look depending on the animation software we used. The last image was a test to see how closely I could match the look in different programs. The original characters were designed in Photoshop, but we ended up animating it in Flash 8 (yes really!)

Some of the first drawings I did for the Cúl an Tí film I directed last year.
I was trying out some basic character shapes and expressions, searching for a spark. This is when I find sketchbooks very useful, collecting thoughts and ideas on the go.

Its been a while... but here is some more concept art from the short, irish language film I directed - Cúl an Tí. You can see some of the early design work in post from last year here!
With these concepts I was working out the use of negative space, colour and texture. It took a bit of time to get the balance right between the backgrounds and character.
As I said before we animated the short in Flash 8. Since I designed the characters with the software in mind, it was a pretty fast way to animate it but...its kinda crazy since software from 2005 and pre-adobe!! The reason being was that we simple didn’t have enough new licenses. Sometimes you gotta work with what you got!
It was a bit of a draw back at first, but actually the limitations of the software were a good kind of challenge. I used it a lot when I was starting out in animation so we were able to avoid many of the glitches :)
The film, along with others from the project, will be screening at Kilkenny Animated this weekend!

Here’s the first image I can show from a short film I directed this year! It’s from a project called Cúl an Tí that combines a number of Irish language songs with animation. The song I have is actually called Cúl an Tí itself, and its adapted from a poem of the same name by Seán Ó Ríordáin. It’s produced by Cartoon Saloon and Focàs Films, with music composed by Kila.
I’ll be revealing more artwork soon! Very excited about it :)
For all those in Ireland it should be airing on TG4 in the autumn Spring 2017. For more info check out the twitter or facebook.
