【❖】   ――――       Judas   lowered   his   head   as   he   took   a   moment   to   light   his   cigarette.   A   part   of   him   is   glad   Kyrie   is   here   and   another   part   of   him   wishes   she   wasn’t.   In   saving   her   from   the   mess   he   had   gotten   her   into   there   was   no   way   for   him   to   hide   the   transformation   he   had   gone   through.   While   she   has   accepted   what   he   is,   that   doesn’t   erase   the   fact   that   as   long   as   she   is   with   him   she   is   a   target   for   anyone   and   everyone   who   has   a   grudge   against   his   family.   Despite   the   risks,   Judas   couldn't   deny   the   warmth   that   Kyrie's   presence   brought   him.   She   had   a   way   of   grounding   him,   reminding   him   that   there   was   still   some   humanity   left   within   him   despite   the   darkness   that   surrounded   his   family   legacy.   But   the   way   Kyrie   looked   at   him,   as   if   he   was   her   savior,   made   Judas   feel   a   flicker   of   warmth   in   his   cold   heart.   Her   unwavering   loyalty   tugged   at   something   deep   inside   him,   a   part   of   him   that   had   long   been   buried   under   layers   of   betrayal   and   bloodshed.

❝   Thanks   for   being   here,   Kyrie.   I   know   it's   not   safe,   but   I   appreciate   your   company   more   than   you   know.   ❞   Judas   couldn't   help   but   feel   a   sense   of   guilt   gnawing   at   him.   He   knew   that   his   world   was   a   dangerous   one,   and   he   had   no   right   to   drag   Kyrie   into   it.   But   there   a   selfishness   tugging   at   him   because   the   only   time   he   truly   felt   happiness   and   at   ease   with   himself   was   when   he   was   with   her.   Everything   was   a   mess   right   now   and   he   was   to   blame   for   all   of   it.   It   was   because   of   him   that   Kyrie   had   been   hurt   and   kidnapped   and   it   was   because   of   him   that   his   mother   was   forced   to   had   over   daylight   rings   to   two   of   the   most   dangerous   vampires   in   Santa   Carla.   He   wants   to   go   after   them   for   everything   they’ve   done   but   he’s   ordered   to   let   it   go.   What   was   the   point   in   trading   the   life   he   had   for   the   one   he   has   now   when   he   still   can’t   do   what   he   should   be   doing   —   and   that’s   putting   a   stop   to   all   of   who   would   threaten   the   people   he   cares   most   about   ?

Judas   turned   to   Kyrie   and   brushed   a   strand   of   hair   from   her   face,   his   touch   gentle   yet   hesitant.   He   could   see   the   worry   in   her   eyes,   the   fear   that   lingered   beneath   the   surface,   and   it   pained   him   to   know   that   he   was   the   cause   of   it   all.   But   in   that   moment,   as   they   stood   there,   Judas   made   a   silent   vow   to   himself.   He   would   do   whatever   it   takes   to   keep   Kyrie   safe,   even   if   it   meant   going   against   his   own   families   wishes.   ❝   Kyrie,   I   need   you   to   understand   something,   ❞   He   began,   his   voice   low   and   tinged   with   a   mix   of   regret   and   determination.   ❝   I   can't   promise   you   a   normal   life.   Being   with   me   means   you'll   always   be   a   target,   always   looking   over   your   shoulder.   But   I   can   promise   you   that   I’ll   do   everything   within   my   power   to   make   sure   no   one   ever   hurts   you   again.   I   should   have   told   you   about   me   sooner,   but   I   didn't   want   to   drive   you   away   knowing   I   was   a   monster.   ❞ Maybe the smartest thing for her to do was to turn around and run as far away from him as possible.

     A lot of people wondered what Judas did during the day while waiting for the others to get out of school. Most days he could be found down on the beach because he often took long swims in the ocean to keep himself in shape. It just so happened that today that swim was done and over with. His hair was messy but already dried from the sun. A bit of sand still clung to his shorts and shoes as he made his way through town and headed for the tattoo shop. He was scheduled to get the two demon tattoos on his shoulder blade finished up. 

     He came to a halt when a voice called out to him. His first thought was to just keep going. He wasn’t known for being very friendly with many people. In fact most people knew to avoid him. But the remark about not getting any service on the phone struck him as odd since they were smack in the middle of town.

      In his normal snarky fashion he started with .. “ Did you pay your bill ? “ But then when he turned around he almost instantly regretted that remark. 

     In front of him stood a short blonde ─ at least compared to his own height and she had these piercing blue eyes. He wouldn’t admit it to anyone but for once in his life he was rather  awestruck. 

     “ That was rude. Sorry about that. You’re close to the boardwalk all that electrical shit might be weirding out your signal. “ That sounded stupid but it was the only thing he could think of. Then again just because she said she had no signal didn’t make it true. Despite how stunning she was and how down right angelic she looked Judas knew not to trust people before they earned that trust. Santa Carla wasn’t known for harboring honest and decent people , at least for the most part.

     Looking down at his watch he suggested , “ I’ve got a few before my appointment. I can show you were it is if you want ? “ She definitely wasn’t from around here. A face like hers he would have remembered for sure. “ You recently moved here or just visiting ? “ It never hurt to ask.

     Today was the day the gang was suppose to meet up after school to hang out. Instead of walking around all day in the hot California sun Chanel was going to surprise everyone. After the settlement came in from her Jeep she had been looking for a new car and today was the day she found it. It wasn’t as grand as her Jeep but it was still nice , a Mazda MX-5 Miata , convertible top , white in color. Plus she had money left over which was always a plus.

     Normally once she got to the high school she would wait for everyone at the foot of the stairs. Today however she was parked right across the street with the top down. On by one she watched as they piled out of the school and started searching for her. Standing up she honked the horn to get their attention. A smile stretching across her face as if saying ‘ look what I got. ‘

     As of late Judas could tell his anger was growing. There was a lot of factors that played into that. Fact one was that he had still yet to complete his first shift under the full moon. Secondly , his nephew was beginning to rub him the wrong way. Every time he turned around as of late he was having to cover his tracks with some excuse cause Luke couldn’t keep his mouth shut about Kyrie. He felt extremely protective of her and if Luke kept it up he was going to cause a bunch of needless trouble for her that he wasn’t ready for her to be apart of. There was so much shit about his family that he didn’t want to bring her into. She was sweet and innocent and didn’t deserve to have that kind of crap dumped in her lap.

     The walk to the school was a long one. Even longer since today Kyrie had things she had to take care of. But it left an opportunity for him to take care of this matter once and for all. He smoked an entire pack of cigarettes on the walk to school alone. Good thing his old man kept stocked up in them. 

     He arrived at the school just in time to see everyone rushing up to Chanel’s car. Eyes narrowed as he took the last hit of his cigarette and flicked it to the ground. Anyone who knew Judas could tell by the look on his face that he wasn’t happy about something. 

     Making his way over to the car he placed his hand on the side and jumped into the backseat. His arms folded across his chest and he didn’t speak until everyone was in the car and they were about to pull out. “ Chanel , drive down to the docks. I think that’s where we need to be today. “ He knew there they could have this argument and not have to worry about spectators.

     Judas was glad when his parents build their Estate they did it in front of a lake. On mornings he didn’t feel like heading to the beach he could just go out back and take a dip in the lake. He had done several laps across the lake before getting out to do some push ups on the floating dock. Being a trybrid meant he had natural unhuman strength but Judas planned on keeping his body as fit as he could. 

     In no way had he forgotten what DJ X and Rachel had put him through. Nor had he forgotten the shit both of them and Hades had caused to his parents and his sisters. In due time they would all get what they had coming to them and he could only hope he would be the one to deliver it to them. 

     “ Hey , Hey big sis ! “ He responded back while doing a few more push ups before pushing himself up with enough force so that he could jump forward enough to be squatting on the deck. Eyes squinted from the sun as he looked up to see his sister Zoey. As always she wore a perky little smile on her face. Out of all three of his half sisters , Zoey always seemed the happiest. 

     “ Just got done doing my work out for the morning. What brings you out so early ? “

     It's been a while since Judas and his Dad spent some father son time together. So when Gunner asked him if he wanted to help work on one of the bikes out in the garage he was all over it. He wasn’t one of those stuck up kids who stayed in the house all of the time because they were afraid to get their hands dirty with a little work. No , he loved doing that sort of thing , especially since he wanted a bike of his own one day soon. Had to be a trait he picked up from his old man. Just like his love for tattoos came from both his old man and mother.

     Once they were out in the garage he pulled off his shirt and tossed it over on one of the work benches along with a pack of cigarettes. Grabbing a hammer , pliers and a flat-bladed screwdriver he headed over to the bike in question already knowing the wheels needed new  bearings. He placed the tools down beside the bike and took a seat on the crate beside it. His dad had already got the bike up and mounted on the head lift stand earlier to keep it from falling over.

     “ No shit , a weretiger ? Can’t say that you have. “ 

     Without instructions Judas went to work locating the brake caliper and began loosening the mounting bolt. Once that was achieved he carefully held to the caliper keeping it in place while removing the other required bolts from the bottom up. He’s watched his Dad work on these bikes enough that he could do this with a blind fold over his eyes and with one hand tied behind his back.

     “ I take it that was before you met mom ? She don’t really talk much about her younger years. Can’t really say that I blame her. I can’t really crack jokes about weretigers being all hairy since that trait sort of runs in the family. “ Judas mused with a snicker.

His   expression   grew   serious   as   he   gazed   into   her   eyes.   ❝   Kyrie,   I   want   you   to   know   that   I'll   do   everything   in   my   power   to   protect   you   too.   My...   condition...   it   comes   with   certain   advantages.   Enhanced   strength,   speed,   heightened   senses.   I'll   use   every   bit   of   it   to   keep   you   safe.   ❞

He   paused,   struggling   with   the   weight   of   his   next   words.   ❝   But   there's   something   you   need   to   understand.   My   rapid   aging...   it's   not   just   a   physical   change.   It's   a   countdown.   I   don't   know   how   much   time   I   have   left,   but   it's   limited.   I   need   you   to   be   prepared   for   that.   ❞   Judas   felt   a   lump   form   in   his   throat,   overwhelmed   by   that   thought.

Judas   cupped   her   face   in   his   hands,   his   touch   gentle   despite   the   roughness   of   his   skin.   ❝   I   don't   want   to   hurt   you,   Kyrie.   The   last   thing   I   want   is   for   you   to   watch   me...   fade   away.   But   I   can't   deny   what   I   feel   for   you   either.   I   just   need   you   to   understand   what   you're   getting   into   by   staying   with   me.   ❞

There   was   still   so   much   more   he   needed   to   tell   her   along   with   his   parents,   but   he   still   couldn’t   bring   himself   to   bring   upon   such   disappoint   to   his   family,   and   most   importantly   his   mother   and   father.   He   pulled   her   into   a   tight   embrace.   ❝   I’m   gonna   figure   this   out,   I   promise   you.   But   for   now,   I   think   we   should   officially   introduce   you   to   my   parents.   ❞

Kyrie leaned into Judas and simply held him. He was so warm to the touch that she could melt into his arms and still have that utmost sense of security. She didn't care how much older he looked, or how much more he could change from there on out. He selflessly helped her time and time again since they met, that she would do anything she could in her power to help him. She couldn't imagine wanting to be anywhere else but with him.

"I'm fine staying with you," Kyrie insisted while hugging Judas tight. "I'm more than fine. Trust me, whatever we do, or wherever we go, I just want to be with you."

After everything they'd been through together, she didn't want to be separated from him anymore. No more being a damsel in distress. She vowed to harness her powers as a druid and practice using her magic in a more proactive manner. If Judas had to fight, she would fight either alongside him or aid him at the very least.

"It'll be okay for us," she promised as she leaned into him and closed her eyes. She wasn't sure how this would be, but she only hoped this would be the case. It was what she wanted for the both of them. Judas was the best thing to happen to her since she left home. He was the one person to make her happy, to make her heart flutter with joy, and to protect her when he could've easily left her to her own devices.

Kyrie opened her eyes again, and took a couple steps away from Judas. Before he could protest, her hands out to her sides, wiggled her fingers, and her irises disappeared. Purple and pink runes hovered above the palms of her hands and in front of her forehead. Red, brown, and yellow leaves gently rained upon them from the skies.

"Magic like this doesn't drain me," Kyrie stated as her eyes turned normal, and the runes vanished. She drifted back to Judas' side and comfortably leaned against him once more. "It's only the strong magic, the one that require me to call upon the deeper parts of nature, that use more energy. But like I said, I will do anything it takes to help you, Judas. I care too much about you to see you get hurt because of me."

Her thin arms slid around one of his muscular ones, and she gave him a squeeze of reassurance. "I won't take 'no' for an answer, either."

【❖】   ――――    Judas   stood   there   in   stunned   silence,   processing   the   weight   of   Kyrie's   words.   Her   revelation   about   her   true   identity   and   the   sacrifices   she   was   willing   to   make   for   him   left   him   speechless.   He   felt   a   surge   of   emotions   —   gratitude,   love,   and   so   much   more.   Kyrie   had   been   so   strong   throughout   everything   that   happened   to   her,   and   now   he   understood   why   she   was   so   special.   He   gently   lifted   her   chin   to   meet   his   gaze,   his   eyes   filled   with   unwavering   respect.   ❝   Kyrie,   you   are   the   most   remarkable   person   I've   ever   met,   ❞   he   said   softly.   ❝   Your   bravery,   your   kindness,   your   unyielding   spirit...   they   inspire   me   more   than   you   know.   You   don't   need   to   give   up   anything   for   me.   I   love   you   just   the   way   you   are,   powers   and   all.   ❞

A   thumb   swiped   away   the   tear   that   spilled   down   her   cheek.   ❝   As   far   as   me   not   being   a   monster,   many   would   disagree   with   you.   There’s   still   a   lot   of   my   story   you   still   don’t   know,   so   I   can’t   judge   you   for   not   knowing   all   of   yours.   Guess   you   can   see   that   just   in   the   way   I   look   right   now.   ❞   And   there   was   still   that   subject   he   would   eventually   have   to   talk   to   her   about.   His   rapid   aging.   As   much   as   he   knew   he   should   be   cold   and   harsh   in   this   moment   to   convince   her   to   leave   and   never   think   of   him   again,   he   just   couldn’t.   He   knew   somehow   they   were   meant   to   be   together.

Judas   caressed   Kyrie's   cheek,   savoring   the   warmth   of   her   touch.   Despite   the   dangers   that   loomed   over   them,   he   couldn't   deny   the   comfort   he   found   in   her   presence.   She   was   a   beacon   of   light   in   his   dark   world,   and   he   knew   deep   down   that   he   couldn't   bear   to   let   her   go.

With   resolve   hardening   in   his   heart,   Judas   leaned   down   to   press   a   tender   kiss   against   Kyrie's   forehead.   ❝   I   may   not   be   able   to   promise   you   a   life   free   of   danger,   ❞   he   murmured,   ❝   but   I   swear   on   my   life   that   I   will   always   stand   by   your   side.   I   also   can’t   have   you   out   there   wondering   around   Santa   Carla   when   I   can’t   be   there   to   watch   you.   That   place   you’ve   been   staying,   I   can’t   let   you   stay   there   any   longer.   ❞   This   wasn’t   something   he   had   talked   over   with   his   parents   yet   but   he   knew   they   would   understand   after   everything   that   happened.   ❝   I   want   you   to   come   stay   with   me,   it’s   the   only   way   I   know   to   keep   you   safe.   ❞

If   she   agreed   it   would   also   give   them   all   the   time   they   needed   to   fill   each   other   in   on   all   the   missing   blanks   they   still   didn’t   know   about   each   other.   Even   if   it   meant   facing   his   own   demons   and   revealing   the   truth   about   his   cursed   existence,   he   would   do   it   for   her.

Kyrie twirled a lock of blonde hair around her finger as she stared longingly at him, wanting him to touch her again. Even after everything they'd been through together, she yearned to be with him. She didn't care what he was. Hurt or not, she didn't want anybody to hunt him. Judas was the same boy she developed feelings for. She understood far too well the consequences of being associated with him. Nothing about him changed for her.

"You're not a monster," Kyrie insisted, though her eyes remained soft. "A monster wouldn't have done what you did to save me. Judas. If anything, it's my fault. If only I had. If I had…"

Her eyes shifted away from his face erroneously. "Listen. I have to tell you the truth about myself."

As cryptic as her words sounded, Kyrie followed through with her statements. Looking at him once more, the blonde spoke rather timidly. "The reason why I wound up here, is because I come from a circle of druids back east. I'm the reincarnation of a druid priestess who passed away centuries ago. I was heavily sheltered growing up, that's why you saw me struggling with a cell phone. I wasn't even allowed a computer or a TV in my house."

Kyrie's fists tightened at her sides, and she frowned. "But that didn't stop me from finding out about such things. I eventually learned about the outside world. I wanted to be normal! My parents, the elders - they wanted me to be a carbon copy of some old, dead priestess. But I wanted to be me. I wanted to be a normal kid, and nothing was going to stop me, so when I became old enough, I ran away as far as I could. I eventually wound up here, and that's when I met you."

Her fists went slack, and she offered Judas a weak smile. "Yeah, there's a lot missing to my story, but we'd be here all day, and you're the first one to know, and to treat me like an actual human being. Maybe if I'd used my magic earlier, I could've been of help, instead of being a dumb damsel in distress! But... but I panicked! I'm so sorry."

Tears were now visible in her eyes. "Judas, even after everything that's happened to me, you could never, ever be a monster to me. You did everything possible to protect and save me! And for that, there's no way you could get rid of me."

She gently cupped the side of his face and rested her head against his chest. Wrapping an arm around his waist, she stated, "I'd give up all of my powers and my destiny, if it meant being able to stay and help protect you."

“Fair’s fair,” Zoey agreed. She decided to wait until they were away from the main house and into Santa Carla itself before she revealed anything juicy. Not that she thought that the parental units would be the type to overhear anything, but she didn’t want to be too sure. She didn’t want to get her own hopes up. With everything happening in general, she wasn’t exactly sure that speaking about this to anyone would jinx the situation. She had her fingers crossed that it wouldn’t. So they simply chit-chatted about this and that in the meantime.

Once the boardwalk was in sight, Zoey revealed all to her little brother. Despite her eagerness to check out the clam chowder festival, she was actually more excited to talk about Logan. While people were milling in and out of the park, she paused outside and clasped her hands behind her back.

“His name is Logan Blake, and he’s actually a childhood friend of our brother-in-law, Colin. He’s the one that helped us take out Colin’s old tormentor. We kinda started talking and working together. I mean, I did most of the talking, and he listened.”

She chuckled and shrugged her shoulders. “We all know I have a big mouth. Logan’s pretty much just like Colin in terms of personality. Same mannerisms, too. Think of Colin, but with lighter colored hair, and these amazing blue eyes. I’ve never seen anyone with such intense and beautiful eyes like Logan’s.”

A wide grin spread across her face. “I probably should mention he is an excellent hunter. He can definitely take care of himself just like Colin, so you don’t have to worry about his work credentials. He checks all the boxes when it comes to hunting and destroying vampires.”

        Judas’ chin would lower a bit as he listened to his sister talk about this guy she was interested in. His hands dipped into his pockets watching the way her face just seemed to glow the very second she started talking about him. He honestly couldn’t remember a single time he had seen her beaming like this. Which only meant one thing, if this dude messed up and broke his sister’s heart Judas was going to have to break his face. 

        If he was a good friend of Colin’s then he would give the guy a chance. Colin turned out to be an okay guy and the love of one of his sisters’ lives. Not that he really saw much of Zoe or Colin. Everyone just seemed to be tangled up in their own family issues. It meant a lot to him that he was the one Zoey first decided to share this information with. 

        “ At least now I know he’s more than capable of taking care of you. Which also means if he lets you get hurt I’m going to have to break his face. “ It might not be something they’ve ever talked about but he knows how Edgar had hurt his sister. He pitied the next person who made her feel like that. “ As long as you’re happy then I’m happy. He would be a damned fool to let someone like you slip through his fingers. “

        Guess it was time for him to spill the beans. Taking a moment he looked around eyeing around for any sight of her. Once he was sure he didn’t see her anywhere he pulled out his phone and sent a quick text letting her know that he was standing right outside the gates waiting for her arrival. His phone was quickly tossed back into his pocket. A cigarette was lit and smoke exhaled from his nose before he began.

        “ I was headed through town a few days ago and got bumped into by this girl. “ Okay it wasn’t a few days ago, it had only been yesterday but it still felt like days ago since he saw her. “ Her name is K .. Kelly. “ He hated not giving her actual name but he would respect her wishes. Nothing wrong with having a nickname these days. “ I don’t know what it is but she’s just got the most amazing smile, long blonde wavy hair and I swear her voice sounds angelic. “ He probably sounded stupid but he didn’t care. Talking about this with his sister was one thing, anyone else would be pulling teeth right now.

Instincts never lied, and while Gunner hadn’t taken to his role as a father as long as he should have, he’d known something was up with his son for quite some time. He didn’t want to pester the boy, but rather, wanted to give him space and wait for him to come for help, or advice of some sort. He and Sonya did their best to protect him from further danger, not wanting him harmed, or put through what his sisters had gone through in the past. So when Judas revealed the aging dilemma, an “ah-ha” voice chimed in the back of Gunner’s head. And like Judas, he immediately thought of his granddaughter, Tatum. How could he not? She was the only other family member with the rapid aging?

“I get what you mean, son,” the older wolf replied as he eased back in his seat and rested his arms over his chest. “Can’t imagine it’s easy. You’re out and about from time to time, with the same people living in town seeing ya. Then again, you got the Lost Boys who haven’t aged a day in how many decades, but they still come around and do their business - but never mind that.” The focus needed to stay on Judas. “But listen, there’s nothing wrong with you, you hear me? And don’t worry about what Luke says about you. There’s nothing wrong with him, either - physically.”

His grandson’s ethics were questionable at best, but his equal werewolf and vampire DNA was balanced out to where he physically aged as fast as a human. It gave him a better chance to blend in among the human population. He’d have to deal with it, whether he liked it or not.

“There ain’t nobody like you, Judas. You’re the only person out there in this world who has werewolf, vampire, and witch genes. That makes you one badass motherfucker. All that combined in you makes you unstoppable. The aging thing? We’ll figure it out, but believe me, that’s all superficial. People are gonna accept you for who you are on the inside. Eventually, you can be able to change your looks at will if it really bothers you. Hell, being part wolf means you’ve got shifter blood in you. Your witch blood means you’ve got untapped potential of magic to help you, too. But it takes time and practice.”

        After finishing up with the bike Judas reached over to the bench and grabbed the sweatshirt he brought along and put it on. It wasn’t that he was cold just more so he thinking along the lines of taking a long job once he was done talking with his dad. Here he was talking to his old man but yet his mind was still all over the place. He’s drawn in several directions and unsure which he should follow. In no way did he blame his parent for the shit that happened. It was his choice to make ( a stupid one ) and he made it. He couldn’t even blame the circumstances of not knowing at the time who Hades was. Judas should have known from the start if it sounded too good to be true then that’s actually what it was. Hades knew his weakness was in his want and desire to protect his family and used that against him.

         “ Yeah, the difference is I wouldn’t imagine they really try to blend in with the crowd. “ Judas remarked lighting himself up another cigarette. He drew in a puff of his cigarette just about the time Gunner spoke about Luke. He paused for a moment thinking those words over and the next moment that passed he was choking on the smoke still in his lungs from laughing. “ I can’t argue with that. “ He shook his head while trying to clear his throat back up. “ I know he means well but sometimes I think he doesn’t really know how good he’s got it. “ Judas admitted.

         Then there was the whole Kyrie thing. Ever since he learned about Kyrie it was a none stop thing with Luke trying to give advice, trying to drop hints to his folks when he knew damn well he didn’t want them to know anything about her yet. Not that he didn’t trust them knowing .. but even he didn’t know for sure where things were headed with her yet.

        Boy was that an understatement made by his Dad. He couldn’t help but think only if you knew half of it. Now he just looked frustrated as he tossed down his half-smoked cigarette and stomped it out with the toe of his boot. “ Hard to start trying to learn all that when I haven’t even shifted yet. I’ve counted four full moons since I killed that guy at the warehouse and nothing has happened. “ Maybe that also had something to do with this crap with Hades but thus far he really felt that he was being screwed on his end of the deal, literally and figuratively. Again, all the things rattling around inside his head that he didn’t want to trouble his parents with. The last thing either of them needed was to worry about him. All of this had been to keep people like X and Hades from screwing with his parents, but so much for that idea. Nope, all he managed to do was open the lion’s gate and let him crawl directly in. “ You’re right though .. gotta take it one day at a time. “ What better way to get to the both of them than going through their son?

Kyrie could only stare blankly at him after the “magically delicious” remark. That DID sound familiar, but from where? She could’ve sworn she heard it at some point in her life. But it was his laughter that brought forth a smile from her. After she was done taking her test and snatching new clothes for herself, she was going to look up that reference, to prepare herself for next time. She wanted to hear him laugh more, and watch his eyes light up every time he did so.

Her need to be near him grew tenfold when he touched her hand while writing his number on her palm. Through this brief contact alone, she could tell he was strong. She hated judging books by their cover, because while she looked delicate, she was capable of taking care of herself in more ways than one. Her defenses lowered around Judas, and not in a bad way. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt safe with anyone she just met. Had she ever? No, it was the false sense of security that her community tricked her into thinking they were safe and only wanted what was best for her. She’d only met Judas, but was more secure with him than anyone back home.

Again, that cold front swept through her the moment Judas stopped touching her. Was she nervous about her test? Yeah, it had to be nerves. She studied her hardest for this exam and worried about not being able to find the building to begin with. Or she was lying to herself about how glad she was to have run into Judas.

He’d pointed to the ferris wheel, and her mouth formed a small “o” shape.

“I imagine you can see that thing from just about everywhere in town,” she whispered in awe. She briefly wondered what it would be like to ride on it. Never had she been so high up before. What would it be like to be so above the ground like that?

Then reality crashed her down to earth once more: the exam. She almost forgot Judas had announced their arrival until now. It was fun just walking and talking with him, that it made time fly by. 

“Guess this is it ‘til tomorrow,” she declared. Overall, she appeared upbeat and cheerful, even with that undeniable nervousness for her testing. 

When he moved to stand beside her and winked, she bit the inside of her cheek, so she wouldn’t keep smiling like some giddy school girl.

“I’ll text you when I’m awake tomorrow,” she promised. “Then we can find out what time to meet up and stuff!”

With a wave of her hand, she bid him goodbye before forcing herself to away one last time. She made her approach to the building with a renewed sense of purpose, all the while still thinking about Judas’s smile and how cool his voice sounded.

     Judas just couldn’t seem to pull himself away from the spot he was standing in , even after she declared this was it until tomorrow. He had to stand there and watch her walk away and couldn’t bare turning his head away until long after she disappeared into the building. She was just so angelic like , even her voice sounded like angels whispering in his ear. Somehow she managed to silence all the troubles that weighted on his shoulders and for just this brief moment in time she made him feel normal.

     As her back turned to him he couldn’t help but call out one last thing to her. “ You don’t have to wait till tomorrow. You could always text me tonight. “ He just wanted to get that out there , just to let her know she wouldn’t be bothering him and that texting him other than for their meeting wouldn’t be a problem at all. 

     Kyrie was the first girl to really draw his attention and there had to be a reason for that. Judas was always one to question everything , more so after being tricked by Hades into their deal , but with Kyrie the thought of even questioning her hadn’t come to mind. Until she gave him reason to not trust in her .. he was more than willing to walk in blind folded.

     He knew everyone was going to be out and about tomorrow which was another issue. If his nephew spotting him with Kyrie he would never hear the end of it. It’s not something he’s looking forward to but it’s something he’s willing to risk just to get to know this cute little blonde that strolled into his life out of no where.

      Time wasn’t always on Judas’ side so he learned early on to make due with the time he had on hand. 

     He couldn’t stop himself from thinking about how she bit the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling at him. It was one of the damn cutest things he’s seen in such a long time. Tomorrow certainly couldn’t come quick enough for his liking. But for now he would have to bid her a farewell cause he couldn’t just stand there until she came back out like some creeper. So as tough as it was he finally turned away from the building and head to his tattoo appointment.

“And that’s why you gotta check out the festival, and try out all the different recipes to see which one you might like,” Zoey countered optimistically. She ditched breakfast specifically for this occasion, because her stomach would be filled with yummy, hot soup prepared by various cooks.

She paused when she took into account what her brother said about having a friend join them. Okay… now that was interesting. The only friends she was aware of that he had were Luke and the others, and Judas would’ve referred to them by name. The fact that he mentioned “a friend” indicated that this person was brand new.

She beamed at Judas. “The more the merrier,” she stated as she gave him an affectionate one-armed hug. “Heck, I’ve got nothing planned for today, so I’m absolutely down with hanging out with you and your friend!”

She couldn’t recall either Zoe or Marie mentioning Judas having a friend. Was she the first to know about this? The thought alone excited her, because she was usually the last of the sisters to hear about such news, seeing as how she kept herself busy with the Book O’Neer, and wasn’t in Santa Carla as much as the rest of her family.

“Now that I think about it,” Zoey said as she and Judas gradually made their way off the property, arm-in-arm, “there’s someone I’m thinking about maybe introducing to you, Alan, and Sam - if things work out, that is… but for now…!”

She poked a playful finger at Judas’s chest. “The focus is on us, and your new friend. Do I get details? Like their name and where you met them–wait, no!”

With a shake of her head, she apologized instantly. “Sorry, I promise I won’t push. I’m gonna let you tell me when you’re ready, okay?”

        “ No thank you. I’m a meat eater, not a clam eater. “ He's seen them slimly things in their shells before. It was a definite hard pass for him even if the consistency was different in chowder. Now if they were talking about something like beef soups, he would be all for it. “ You on the other hand just eat away till your heart’s content. “ 

        And there it was. He knew Zoey wouldn’t have no issues with the idea. Now he hoped Kyrie would be as open hanging out with both him and his big sister. Though it wouldn’t be the entirety of their day. He knew that after Zoey spent some time with them she’d come up with some excuse as to why she had to bail on them. It’s just the way she worked.

        “ Good, then I say we’ve got most of the day planned. “ 

        “ No, no .. none of that but for now. “ It was one thing for him to be picked and poked full of questions but when it came to his sisters, especially Zoey there was a protective side that came to the surface. Much like it did with the rest of his family. She only mentioned three names she was considering introducing this said person to, people who she felt extremely close to. Which led Judas to believe that perhaps she was courting some guy. Offhand, he couldn’t say he’s met anyone in Santa Carla that he would trust with his sister.

     “ I’ll give you all the details you want but first you got to spill the beans on this person of yours. “ This time he returned the favor by poking her in the side with his finger. “ Can’t have my sis hanging out with people I don’t approve of. Kind of what brothers do, ya know? “

        He’d keep to his end of that. Once she gave him the deets, then he would return the favor and answer any questions she had about Kyrie. After leaving the property they headed downtown. It was a walk and a half to be held but nothing the two of them couldn’t handle.

“I only wish those things had been the weretigers,” Gunner reflected. Looking back, he realized he would’ve smelled a scent that gave them away - but those creatures didn’t have any. They were products of ancient magic, and they weren’t living beings. Their sole purpose was to keep intruders from getting too far into the structure. The villagers warned them, but being young and overly egotistical, he viewed their words as nothing more than paranoid and superstitious.

“After I took care of those things, I followed Baagh’s scent til it just stopped. That was when I had to rely on my other skills to track that son of a bitch down. No sight, no smell - just touch, due to how damn dark it was. I was practically blind. There were traps, too, though some of ‘em had already been sprung thanks to Baagh and whoever else had gone ahead of us. Made my journey a lil’ bit easier, in a way.”

“When I saw a faint light up ahead, I figured I arrived at the main chamber where the treasure was gonna be. Picture a long tunnel you just keep walking toward. The light never gets bigger, but you know you’re moving yourself forward. It eventually becomes a mind screw, and you get all dizzy and disoriented. Another trick of the ancient ones, using the structure to mess with would-be robbers. Didn’t stop me, though. I made it to the end, where I found myself in this huge ass room with these towering archaic statues. Lit tortures allowed me to see what I was getting myself into. Floor was covered in a sea of gold coins, with treasure chests filled with royal artifacts, and right smack in the middle was this huge son of a bitch who damn near the size of a grizzly bear if it stood on its hind legs. ‘Cept it wasn’t any bear…This thing had the color and stripes of a goddamn tiger.”

The cigarette was put out as Gunner leaned over to personally inspect Judas’ handiwork so far. He’d caught the distressed look on his son’s face.

“How ‘bout I quit yakkin’ and you tell me what’s on your mind?” he offered. “I can always finish this story another day. I might be older, but my mind’s still sharp. I’ll remember where I left off. Go on. What’s happening?”

        In a lot of ways it was nice hearing his dad talk away. For the most part it helped to keep Judas’ mind off all the things that were blazing through his mind. It was also nice being able to spend a little time with his ole man. A lot was going on lately with his parents , some of which wasn’t sitting well with him. One thing that struck him off was the fact that his mother nor his father had mentioned the vampire and wolf chained up the basement to him. He thought he had a right to know such a thing since they were the ones that abducted him not so long ago. 

        Maybe they had their reasons for not telling him but that didn’t make it sit any better with him. Did they not think since he triggered his wolf genes that he couldn’t sense others in their home , even in the basement ? That damn rotten stench didn’t need a vampire or werewolf nose to catch it. Sure he hadn’t made his first shift yet but his senses were keener than either of them could imagine. 

        Judas took a long pull from his cigarette and held it only moments later slowly exhaling it through his nose like a dragon about to release its fire. Reaching over with his free hand he grabbed a clean rag and removed what bit of grease and grim that had gotten on the bikes rims while he worked on it. He heard his dad’s question and while he would like nothing more than to just lay it all out on the table for his dad , he had enough to worry about. He didn’t want to be responsible for adding more shit on his parents plates. His own determination for revenge lead him to a place and a deal that was going to come with a hefty price. Judas should have been smarter , should have connected the dots but he didn’t until it was to late.

        “ Just been thinking about this aging thing. “ It was part of the problem but not the whole package , just enough to chat about and not leave his father thinking anything else was wrong. “ I know Tatum stopped aging when she reached her later teens. But here I am and it’s still happening. Can’t help but wonder if I’m gonna end up and old man within the next year or two. “ He finally tossed the rag down on the floor beside him and shifted back around to look at his father. “ Really ain’t all that easy getting out in the world when your face is constantly changing and aging. It’s just a lot of shit to process sometimes. And it don’t help when Luke constantly tosses shade at me about it. Like he’s jealous I’m aging so fast. Not exactly as great as it seems when you’re actually going through it. “

It was difficult for Luke to keep his own mouth shut after hearing Judas’ words. His arms folded across his chest with his fists pressed against his rib cage. If he had his mother’s strength and pension for bottling up her anger, the entire car would be shaking and rattling, and cracks would appear on the windows right now.

“I was trying to help,” he stated through grit teeth. “But if you don’t want my advice, then fine! I won’t give you any! Slipped my mind that growing faster than everyone gives you way better insight on everything going on.”

That last part was loaded with sarcasm, but he chose to keep his mouth shut, even going as far as biting his tongue until it bled. Okay, he admitted that his straight forwardness wasn’t the best at times (or rather, a lot of the times), but at least when it came to people he cared about, he couldn’t lie about his thoughts and feelings if he could help it. He wanted to blame his aggressive wolf nature, but it could be a trait that was simply Luke being Luke, no matter what species he was.

After taking a deep breath and exhaling loudly, he blurted out, “I’m SORRY Uncle Judas, okay? I won’t tell you or anyone else what to do, alright?!”

Laddie leaned over and gently poked Luke’s arm from behind where he was seated. “Don’t go pouting on us,” he said gently. “There’s just a lot of stuff going on, but we’ll work it out together, alright?”

Molly flopped back into her seat and stared out the window as they drove along the streets toward their destination. It was amazing how much bigger their group became since the early days. She liked being with others who were like her, not “normal” among humans, and the last thing she wanted was tension among them. More than ever, they needed to stick together and help each other out.

        Luke was getting upset , therefore Chanel was getting upset. In no way had she even come close to mastering her emotions. Not many things upset her  lately ─ well other than this morning when Luke’s mom nearly went off the deep end. She could feel her fingers tightening around the stirring wheel. Over and over she kept repeating to herself to remain calm because she was driving a vehicle with five people inside of it. The last thing any of them needed was for her to accidently shift while she was behind the wheel. The back and forth between them was making her head spin.

        Whatever shit was going on with Judas he had no right taking it out on Luke. It wasn’t until she heard Luke apologize did tiny veins began to ripple under her eyes. Then she heard Laddie telling Luke not to pout and that was as much as she could stand. Hell no she wasn’t letting him apologize for that. Pulling up and under the docks she threw on the brakes and slammed the car into park. Shifting in her seat she got on her knees and looked directly at Judas. 

        “ What the hell has gotten into you ? He’s only trying to help the people he cares about , when did that ever become a sin ? If he gives a suggestion and you don’t like it then don’t take it , it’s that simple. Now STOW your SHIT or get the hell outta my car. “

        “ What gives me better insight is I know how to handle my own shit. “ Judas shot back just before the car came to a screeching halt nearly tossing him into the front seat. “ Jesus woman ! “ He barked out.

        His eyes caught with Chanel’s and there it was the protective little barbie sticking up for her guy. If everyone’s problems were as simple as theirs then hell they would all have it made. His neck craned to the side with a sickening crack as he listen to her lecture him. Again someone else barking orders like they ruled the land and their way was the best and only way to handle a situation.

        “ Screw this ... I don’t need this shit from you .. “ He pointed at Luke. “ And I sure don’t need it from you. “ Pointing now at Chanel. Inching his way up between Laddie and Molly he placed his ass on the back of the car and slid himself out of it. “ I have enough shit to deal with. “ He started walking away from the car but not before yelling one last thing back to Luke.

        “ Control your Barbie , Luke .. “

Kyrie took a hold of Judas’ phone, careful not to drop it. It looked one of the current models she’d see at the retail stores. Her parents and the community leaders wouldn’t even let her go near a computer growing up, believing she’d get strange ideas from dangerous people. It was still eye-rolling to think about what she was forced to go through over the years, until she wised up, and abandoned everyone she knew. Judas was the first person who went above and beyond to help her, when everyone else did the bare minimum just to get her out of their hairs. After being abandoned one too many times, Kyrie turned bitter, even distrustful of others. The outside world proved dark and filled with bad energy, greed, and corruption - it was almost as if her family was right about “outsiders” who went against their lifestyle. Yet the closer she ventured to California, and the farther she escaped from home, the more her heart and mind healed. She needed to focus on bettering herself, and not worry about why people acted as if she was a burden. Forget her old life. Getting an education that wasn’t catered to appease a ghost of her past was enriching, and knowing she achieved it on her own made her that much more proud of herself.

The natural beauty of the West Coast helped awaken her abilities once more, in ways that put her in good spirits for the first time in years. Meeting Judas added another factor to her healing overall.  

Slowly, she tapped the buttons on the screen, afraid she’d accidentally break it. Fortunately, it took no time to get the hang of the smart device. Then, she typed in her first name, where she couldn’t resist adding a smiling emoji next to it. For someone who didn’t grow up with technology in her home, she was grateful for the ability to adapt fast.

“You’re in luck,” Kyrie said as she handed Judas his phone back. Her hand remained stretched out, as she reached into the bag she had slung over her shoulders, and dug out a sharpie. “Write your number on my hand, and as soon as I get to the building, I can punch the numbers into my phone before I take my exam.”

While she was eager to get her testing over with, she was more excited about her meeting up with Judas again, when time wasn’t against them.

“I’m glad I ran into you,” she confessed, trying to hold back another smile that wanted to emerge. “I can’t wait for the grand, special tour from you. You’re my lucky charm, okay?”

     Taking his phone back he looked at the information and grinned at the little smiley face she added after her name. “ Sounds like a plan. “ His finger tips brushing lightly against her fingers as her took the sharpie from her ─ eyes fixed on hers as he done so. Judas took her hand in his then lifted the sharpie to his mouth where he popped off the top and placed his number across her palm. He finished it off with a little devil smiley at the end. Reluctantly , he returned her hand to her and fetched the sharpie lid from his mouth and put the top back on. 

     He wasn’t even sure what he was doing here , or why he was doing this considering all the things in his life. Things could change for him on the flip of a dime , and the things that changed weren’t simple things that could easily be explained. His entire family was different but at the same time they didn’t have the same issues with their growth like he did. It much easier for them then it was for him. Tatum was the only one who would remotely understand , and even then it was different for her. All he really knew for sure was that he wanted to spend as much time with Kyrie as he could before another change took place and he’d be forced into hiding away inside for a couple of months.

     Finally his feet began to move again as he handed her sharpie back over to her. If he had it his way he’d have her forget all about the GED test all together since the job she wanted was pretty much already in the bag for her , but he wouldn’t be selfish enough to ask her to do that.

     “ Yeah , likewise , I’m glad I bumped into you as well. “ He nodded trying his best to keep his eyes on the sidewalk in front of them and not as much on her. “ Never been called anyone’s lucky charm before , but I’ll take it. “ A smile dragged up the corner of his lip. “ Who knows , I very well could be magically delicious. “ He teased with a chuckle.

     After turning the corner with her he stopped. Head nodding to the building beside them. He almost looked a bit upset that they reached their destination so quickly. “ Right here is the building you’ve been looking for and if you look right over there ... “ Judas moved to stand behind her , a arm stretching across her shoulder with a finger pointing. “ You can see the ferris wheel from here. “ He then popped back to the side of her. “ But should you get lost tomorrow you’ve got my number , I’m always just a phone call away. “ He glanced down at her and winked.
