Not to mention ur og posts?? I like kind of forgot that u write the posts on Coptic history until I sent the ask and saw ur profile again, but they’re so interesting and they open my eyes to a whole world of non-secular Coptic history. Crazy…
thank you! And yeah I like talking about Coptic art and material culture a lot- it can be dicey because of. Various academic nonsenses, but I still really enjoy it
#cipher talk#Hilariously I like Late Antiquity/pre-Islamic Coptic art partially because it's more secular#Like there's obviously religious symbolism everywhere but it feels like there was more freedom in playing with ideas and still being Coptic#Then again that era also had more religious diversity among Copts for most of it- most were still Christians after a certain point but ther#Were also Manicheans and pagans for a bit and maybe Jews. I still can't find a clear historical answer on the last one#There's a like. Weird trend these days to only show icon painters and such as 'coptic artists'#They do good work but Copts do a lot more kinds of art than just icons#It's not that Pre-Islamic Coptic art was pre-colonial; no such thing really exists for Copts because Copts became Copts while occupied#By an empire and we haven't had a like. Independent self rule thing since lmao#But there were different concerns for artists and jewelers and tailors
