Buzzmath Launches Common Core Aligned Open Badges

One of the first Open Badges systems built in collaboration with Mozilla, the MacArthur Foundation, and HASTAC is now accessible in Buzzmath, Scolab Inc.’s math practice program. The 56 badges available represent an opportunity for middle school students to share earned knowledge and accomplishments.

Scolab, Inc. just launched their new Common Core aligned, personalized digital badging system inside of their math practice program, Buzzmath. This is one of the first systems built in collaboration with Mozilla, the MacArthur Foundation, and HASTAC as part of their Open Badges initiative.

Buzzmath's badge system is one of 30 winning Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition projects, an initiative that was supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and administered by HASTAC (the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory) through Duke University and University of California-Irvine, in partnership with the Mozilla Foundation. Since then, they have been part of a team of innovators working on the creation of a digital badge system to explore how badges can be used to help students learn, demonstrate skills, and unlock opportunities.

Badges will initially be available as part of Buzzmath’s 6th grade program, with plans to expand.

Students will receive badges for content knowledge, process knowledge, and achievements. The 27 content knowledge badges are the core of the badge system. They are automatically awarded as students successfully complete a series of practice activities and one culminating activity relating to a specific concept. Activities are aligned to and built upon the Common Core State Standards. Credentials are listed for each badge, including the standard(s) it represents.

These badges can be pushed to a student’s Mozilla Backpack, which provides a comprehensive view of a student’s accomplishments.

Process knowledge badges (13 in all) are awarded by a teacher for observable positive learning behaviors such as teamwork and problem solving. Achievement badges (16 in all) are automatically awarded for reaching goals such as improved accuracy and quantity of activities completed.

“Open badging provides students with a new way to represent their accomplishments and skill,” says Carl Malartre, CEO of Scolab, Inc. “This will open up many opportunities for many students in their school, community and as they enter the workforce. We are excited to be at the forefront.”
