2 Weeks in Phoenix
The Verdict: Phoenix is awesome! The city is beautiful - low buildings, sun, palm trees, greenery and mountains all around. We found the food delicious and very vegetarian/vegan friendly. There was tons of nice outdoors stuff to do. The city has everything you need - plenty of healthcare, sidewalks everywhere, bicoastal-style amenities like Trader Joes, a Warby Parker store, True Food Kitchen, etc. The drawbacks are traffic/driving (throwback to Atlanta traffic!) and how hot it gets in the sun - we liked it in March but can’t imagine being here over the summer. Uber/Lyft also doesn’t seem to have much of a network here so you REALLY need your car. Overall it feels like a really liveable city - maybe like a slightly smaller Los Angeles. Our only regret is not staying here longer!
WHAT TO DO
Hiking
Given the COVID-19 pandemic, this is our current favorite pastime. It’s outdoors and therefore feels a bit safer than indoor activities (though honestly not always entirely COVID-safe given how extra-crowded the trails were in Phoenix).
We hiked Camelback Mountain, one of the best-known hikes in the area. There are two trails up; we took the Echo Canyon Trail (as the alternative, the Cholla Trail, has been closed for quite a while). It’s about 1.2 miles each way, and VERY steep. The cardio workout was moderate and manageable, but the rock scrambling is next level - very slippery and challenging, with two places where you actually need to hold on to the railing that’s built there. And it’s insanely crowded -- we got there on a Sunday around 6:30a.m. and the (pretty large) parking lot was at least half full when we started / completely full when we left. The hike was full of a few friendly and masked people and a lot of obnoxious and aggressive people who got too close, nearly ran us over, blasted music from their speakers, etc. This is totally reflected in the Google, TripAdvisor, and All Trails reviews, so we knew to expect this but were still sort of in disbelief at people’s behavior. The actual hike and the view at the top are really cool, but we wouldn’t do it again during the pandemic.
We also made a sunset visit to Hole in the Rock, a popular sunset spot that’s just a ~5 minute (sort of steep) walk up to a pretty sweet hole in a mountain with an insane view of Phoenix. There’s a sizeable area to sit near the hole and get a great view of the city, but it was a little too popular for our liking. This is located in Papago Park, a large park that has other short trails that seemed great & less crowded to enjoy the sunset (and also happens to host the local zoo and botanical gardens).
As a result, we forewent a few other hikes in the area that we had heard good things about - Piestewa Peak (strenuous, sounds very similar to Camelback Mountain), Tom’s Thumb Trail (3.6 mile loop in Scottsdale), and Pinnacle Peak Trail (also in Scottsdale). We read online that they are similarly crowded to Scottsdale, and we just didn’t want to deal with this during the pandemic. Would love to check these out some other time though!
Other Outdoors Stuff
We spent 60-90 minutes at the local Desert Botanical Garden. It was stunning! There are SO many varieties of cactus (the barrel cactus and bunny ears cactus pictured below were some of our favorites) and the garden is so well done overall. You can also see saguaros here - not as many as at Saguaro National Park, but enough that you could skip a trip there.
Just don’t be like us and go to the Garden in the middle of a sunny day - it’s unshaded and even though the temperature was only 75F, it was unbearably hot/sunny/dehydrating - go in the morning or evening or a cloudy day if you can.
Pro tip: Adult tickets are $30/piece(!), but if you buy the American Horticultural Society annual membership ($50/2 people), it includes “reciprocal” (read: free) admission to many botanical gardens, including this one. So it’s actually cheaper to buy the annual pass. Just go to one other botanical garden in the U.S. and it’s worth it!
We also really liked walking around our neighborhood in north Phoenix. It seemed like a pretty average neighborhood - nothing terribly fancy - but it was pretty and felt super safe.
Scottsdale
We can see why this is such a popular bachelor/ette party destination. Scottsdale was a 20 minute drive from our airbnb in Phoenix and it’s just so cute and bougie. There’s a small riverfront area (think about the size of Hayes Valley in SF) and a few blocks of restaurants and bougie shops where you can buy things like overpriced hippie clothes, fine wines, cigars, overpriced lattes, and all sorts of other things you don’t need. We went to Scottsdale twice and enjoyed some delicious food (more on that below) and just walking around / sitting by the water to relax. Also, parking in Scottsdale was much easier than any other nice/major city we went to (like Atlanta or New Orleans). There is free 3 hour parking and if you can’t find parking on the street, there are also free parking garages. How awesome is that!
VEGAN/VEGETARIAN EATS
Giving Tree Cafe (Midtown Phoenix, 5/5): Our favorite restaurant food on our trip so far. This place is all vegan. The crunch wrap supreme (veggie burger with avocado and other goodies wrapped in a dosa-like wrap) is AMAZING. We also got a bowl that included seasonal veggies one of the times we ate there, which was very good, but nothing measures up to the crunch wrap supreme. Also, the workers wore masks and were very nice, and ordering takeout was pretty fast (15-20 min). We’re going to miss this place.
Berdena’s (Old Town Scottsdale, 5/5): If you feel like spending $6.50 on an iced chai latter with macadamia milk and kind baristas, this is your place. So. scrumptious.
True Food Kitchen (Central/North Phoenix, maybe there are others, 5/5): This is one of our favorite chains, and we were delighted to live within a few minutes’ drive of it. Create an account and order online to save $10 on your first order.
New Wave Market (Old Town Scottsdale, 4.5/5): The bagels were featured in the NYT a few years ago, and they are actually delicious. It’s easy to order online, and the everything bagel with egg, avo, onion, tomato...it’s not quite Brooklyn Bagel but it’s close.
Farm & Craft (Old Town Scottsdale, 3/5): Skip it. This is an over-hyped brunch spot that we found on a couple blogs. The breakfast burrito and vanilla protein pancakes were truly mediocre. Not bad-tasting, but you can get much tastier food than this in Phoenix/Scottsdale. It’s not worth the line to order and crowded waiting area with all those unmasked yuppies.
