So I was playing Golems of Amgarrak today for fun because I am sick like that and I remembered just how time consuming and tidieous the thing with lyrium wells feels (which while annoying on a casual play level is very much adding to the general vibe the DLC is going for. I love you horror survival Dragon Age DLC, no matter how much I harp on u), and then I was reminded of how there were similar puzzles in DA2 DLCs (albeit this time they were only really required if you wanted the loot) and then I was reminded of a reviewer who (tbf they have not played DAO) said something to the tune of "you know how many puzzles "Dragon age before Veilguard had??? About 100% less!"... so yeah.

Basically a victorian vampire and a cowboy walk into a bar, might add a third to make this a trio in the future its not historically accurate. Sue me

The fact that the man who just walked into the bar was paler than the white hot sun in the sky was already enough to make him stand out but under the red poncho was a white button up with ruffles on the sleeves, a vest with golden accents, in all honesty the boots he wore were the most normal part of his outfit. 

The closer you looked at the pale man the less human he seemed, the suspicously sharp looking nails, unnaturally colored eyes that matched the poncho he wore and teeth that looked sharper than a coyotes. It was common sense to not stare at someone in a bar in these parts of town becouse people came from all walks of life, some were unpredictable and you never knew who would pull a gun on you. 

The man walked to the bar and sat on the stool, from what he knew whiskey was most popular around these parts, should probably get that. To not stand out more than he already did, he already had enough concerned people trying to figure out what was wrong with him. It wont be his first time drinking whiskey, he did take quite a fancy to it during his travels around here, they dont have any whiskey back home and a quick trip back here is just not efficient so hes going to drink it till hes tired of it.

He probably stood out by a large margin. Despite dressing somewhat similar to the locals due to the time he traveled around here, his mannerisms were still far too dignified compared to all the cowboys and drunks in the bar so he just kept to a corner to not stir more trouble than necessary. He took a sip of his drink and felt the burn travel down his throat, a satysfying feeling, as endertaiment he just kept to observing a poker game go on. Some of the men there didnt look like they would take a loss well, and from expirience those types of people lost most of the time so he was well aware that that things would get amusing soon. Especially that one of the guys just went all in.. 

How much Valerine loved drunken poker games. To watch, he was never stupid enough to play poker drunk.. you never knew what type of decisions you make when youre drunk so its best not to try fate, despite the fact that Valerine considers himself quite the lucky guy. 

He continued to nurse his drink and enjoy the poker game from afar until he felt an uncomfortable gaze drill into him. He was used to being stared at, usually more than one person stared at him but this one just made his gut twist, he didn't want to look around to alert the person but hes pretty sure the way his face faltered was quite obvious. He got the drink down and  decided to make his exit, even though for any other person it would be wiser to stay in a crowded space if you felt threathened, but he wasnt even sure who it was. The way he felt made his hairs stand up on end, it was rare he ever felt this unnerved in this long life. Valerine paid for his drink, pulled the hood over his head and made his way out stopping not too far from the bar, sure enough after about 2 minutes after he left, he saw another person leave the bar. A local by the looks of it, the guy was going right towards him. Just great. Fucking amazing. 

From what Valerine knew, he hasnt earned himself any bounties just yet, so it shouldnt be a bounty hunter, he also didnt quite recgonize the guy so it shouldnt be that he pissed him off at some point in his travels.. Valerine was left with no idea of who this guy was as he was getting closer and closer, with a hand on his hip, winch is usually where people around here kept guns. 

Surely he wasnt about to get shot in the middle of the street..? Surely people around here were smarter than that.. stand offs were common around here but Valerine didnt even have a damn gun, there was no reason to have one for him since he could easily defend himself.

The man stopped about a meter infront of him. 

Valerine atleast tried to make the illusion of the fact he was breathing. No one needed to know that he was pretty much fucking dead. "..can I offer any help..?" 

The man infront of Valerine just smiled, he didnt look like he was about to say something but after a few painfully akward seconds the cowboy took out a poster out of his pocket - a wanted poster, thanfully it wasnt Valerine who was on it, the bounty also wasnt particularly high. "just wanted to know, have you seen this fucker anywhere?"

Valerine looked closer, squinting a bit to focus on the poster, although still weary of the man infront of him, he decided to not make it too much of an issue, he didnt want to even aknowladge how taken aback he was by the mans vocab. The man on the poster didnt look familiar in anyway "..no. I dont belive I have ever cought sight of this man." He shook his head as his gaze went back to the cowboys face.

"mother fucker.." the cowboy sighed and ran a hand through his hair adter putting away the poster, the man infront of him was as white as his damn stead, winch he hasnt realized in the bar, sure he noticed the stranger was pale but not to this point, surely he should have already gotten some tan. "Yer not from around here, are ya?"

That's exactly what I was thinking; I believe being made out of mechanical components would be a uniquely stimulating experience. Can you imagine stimming by spinning a random gear, or repeatedly tightening a spring and letting it snap back into place? I bet that would feel so deeply satysfying.

And you know what would be fun? Have you ever tried disassembling a pen and reassembling it in class? You could do that with your own hand!

Also, since you already brought up sensory precision, I'd like to add movement precision as well:

Try to stretch your hand out and hold it in place. After a moment you'll notice it swaying ever so gently, your muscles subtly shifting trying to get into a more comfortable position. No movement you ever make is truly precise, there's always a couple of milimeters of inaccuracy, and it's virtually impossible to be perfectly still because of it.

None of that would be true for a machine. Each one of your movements would be perfectly optimised; calculated down to the micrometer, with a practically infinitesimal margin of error.

On top of all that, I really like what you said about feeling every little part of yourself that allows you to function, and how you can't achieve that with a biological body. It made me realise that we know very little of what happens in our bodies at all times, and have even less control over it; the processes that allow us to live are entirely independent of our will, and could betray us at any moment without us even noticing(that's literally why cancer exists). I think that's another thing that draws me to the idea of being a machine - the ability to feel that your body is truly your own, rather than just an insubordinate, inconvenient vessel that you were forced to inhabit.

It annoys me to no end that any time i bring up wanting to be a machine, people immediatly jump to the "From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh" copypasta. I mean, yes - Being made out of metal far more resillient than the human body does sound quite nice - But that's not all there is to it!

You know what I find so compelling about being a machine? The sounds!

Think about it - the clattering and clicking of my gears as I walk?? Hearing the springs in my tendons snap into place as I get ready to strike??? Um, yes please?????

Aaaah since Arachne has been introduced on the askblog, now I can show you her design! (I have made all of Perseus’ friends way back in May lmao) and this time we also have some semblance of gameplay! Yippee!

Arachne starts with two items, one passive and one active. Also she starts every run in the Cellar, but that’s way less annoying for her lmao.

This is her passive item, Spider Brooch. Grants a Bursting Sack effect with the added bonus of turning every Spider into a Blue Spider instead (Arachne also has a little chance to charm any spider-themed enemy with this item)

This is her active item! It has a 12 room charge, but has different effects based on the number of charges it has when used

3 charges: spawns a large number of blue spiders (8-12)

6 charges: the blue spiders become permanent (like Apollyon’s locusts) and now deal 2.5 damage per tick. These permanemte spiders are now purple like her cape.

12 charges: all the spiders (both blue and purple) get killed Sacrificial Altar style, leaving behind pickups (including chests and trinkets) for half the spiders killed. Example: you have 12 spiders, you get 6 pickups if you sacrifice them. If you have a certain number of spiders (I was thinking 20+) instead of pickups you get an item from the current room item pool. The quality of the item is based on the number of spiders you had.

Okay so. Arachne. She’s the first kid that ever ventured in the Basement, after losing a competition against Athena and then hanging herself. Still, she’s quite satysfied with the little life she managed to carve for herself in the Basement. Down there she learned quite a few new things like talking to spiders. Until Perseus came down after her, it was just Arachne and her eight-legged friends.

Being in the Basement for so long has changed her body considerably. As shown in the picture, she doesnt have any arms, the cape is her arms. She uses it to manipulare objects and move around, usually without the help of her legs (now mostly useless anyway). You can usually see her gliding about without making any sound. The rope around her neck can be used to manipulate objects too, but she doesn’t really feel comfortable with it.

She acts much older than her age and before Hector came, she was the unofficial leader of the group, and while the two still butt heads sometimes, they get along pretty well. Despite being able to live alone, she’s overjoyed to have so many people around her and soon started to refer to them as her family. Perseus and Marsyas are still her favorites, but only because they’ve spent so much time together.

Scout: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ not the most emotional mature of the mercs; even himself admits that he is pretty immature even for his age (early 20s), but this doesn’t means he doesn’t have empathy or that he doesn’t care about his S/O. He sees you suffering and he is big time worried. He tries to motivate you, drag you out of your bed and do something fun or at least go and buy some food. He will get annoying but he can’t just sit there and watch you rot. He is a hands-on guy, he might not understand why you are acting up like this, but at the same time he doesnt know how he can approach you. He will try to hug you tighter and bring you food and water, his shoulders can be a pillow for you to cry all day and night long and his hands are there to wipe off the tears from your face. He hates seeing his bby sad and would give half his Tom Jones memorabilia for you to wake up one day and be your old, happier self ♥

Soldier: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ although his social skills are in scarcity, he isnt a traitor. He sees his S/O down ( mentally) and it pains him to an unimaginable extent  to see you so unmotivated . He doesn't understand why are you sad, what has happened? Did that crazy Kraut touched you? who he needs to snap the neck? He hates seeing you like this. Will be stubborn, just because he doesnt understand something it doesnt mean he can't find a way around. In the end, he will push you enough to actually break down and explain everything that has happened. For the first time in years hes just silent, he broke the dam and he is beyond ashamed of making you break down like this. He doesn't what to do so for now he will hold you as tight as he can and promise in America and whatever is holy and pure in him that he will help you untill you are again okay. ♥

Pyro: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ they know that you are sadder than before and they can see you points of view. They themselves know that life sometimes just sucks and that its okay not to want to eat or leave your bed. But they are also afraid that whatever is plaguing you it will become worse and worse and they really don’t want to see you hurting yourself like they once did. They try helping you do simple things, drink a glass of water, play a bit with their stuffed animals, theyll help you brush your hair or wash your face. They know they baby you, but they think you need a bit more of some more smootches or cuddles. If they see you worsening or being even less active they will drag you their pillowfort and just try to keep you as close them while chanting sweet nothings and sad mumbles, please don’t loose yourself like they did. ♥

Engie: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ he might be a cruel, cold man when hes on the field, but in reallity he is the cinnamon roll meme( he is a cinnamon roll and he might kill you tho but he is mostly a cinammon roll). He knows also that work and his projects take a really big amount of his time so he already feels very guilty. I doubt he has any humanitarian doctorates, but he has an above average understanding of human psychology; whats the point of trying  to emulate life when you cant understand it?He knows he can't address it straightforward, but he needs to get you over this slump before you do something really stupid. Que him cleaning up his workshop and carrying you there bridal style. He has a small nest of pillows and blankets and right next to it his trusted guitar.You have the whole night and the day after to spend it together and get in the bottom of the barrel. Itll be hectic but he is a very patient man and loves ya to bits ♥

Demo: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ lowkey one of the mercs with the most expierence with depression/ depressive episodes. For once in his life he doesnt drink and tries to find the rute of the problem, if there is of course or its just pent up anger and frustation with things that have happened in your life now or in the present. In simple, you will talk. For hours if needed. He wont drink a sip becausehe doesnt want to forget even the stupidest detail from your venting. In the end, he will offer you to drink but he will drag you out of the base/ house and make you sit in the front porch/ garden  while he has set up some “ festive” fireworks ( just some small ones that erupt and turn into hearts) . He isnt the ideal psychological perfection, but if you chosed the scottish cyclops for your mate, then he shall go to the man and back just to see you smile one more time. ♥

Heavy: ˜”*°•.˜”*°• he has seen depression and has experienced it himself. It was way too traumatic for a young man to have to support a family without a father figure around. I highly headcanon him to have deppresion hence the sandwich, hes bingining while staying in the battlefield. He doesnt care about the language barrier, in order for the both of you to be as close as you are know, it means you understand eachother to a satysfying extent. He will cook you a very hearty meal and bring it to your bed with a tray and sweet tea. You can eat in silence with him simply staying by your side and rub your back, words can’t potray how he feels right now. Once you finished hell put the dishes outside and simply cuddle you ( being the least cuddly of the mercs, it means a lot). You can nap, cry, trace patterns on his sculp anything really. All his life the main cause of depression was the anarchy surrounding his life, he needs you to feel protected. He doesn’tcare how much time it will take, but he will rip the mountains apart to seeyou smile out of genuine happiness, might even cry if he is the cause. •°*”˜.•°*”˜

Medic: (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ the most medically, again qualified from the group. so he has at least that covered. He isn’t stupid, you show clear signs of cronic clinical depression ( also known as manic depression) and although it has been a long while before finding a patient to lobotomize, hed be damned if he ever butchered you up like that. He is a healer, even if enjoys his enemies to hurt a little more than they should, and a healer is here to help both the body and the mind. Will persuade you into getting under medication, even if he knows theyll have little to no effecthe just hopes the placebo effect will motivate you. He tries to mix your routine with his, ex. he wakes up really early when you finnaly after hours of insomnia fell asleep, hell tuck you in and kiss your forehead. Throughout the day hell send Scout or Heavy to bring you food or water or your medications. Pyro will be by your doorstep or you side, to keep you company during the day. At night he will carry you to the medbay and do all the talking for you if you dont feel like talking, he will listen to all of your venting. Lowkey will sit you on his lap so he can rub your back and let you cry/ just sit there, to feel his heardbeat on your face and relax. ♥

He doesnt know how to help yo, he really does but he doesnt know. He is nervous but he will probably suggest you two take a vacation away, together. He has planned it all fancy and nice, and pretty much has scanned the whole place/ area/resort you are staying and having “ friends” around. He doesnt care if you just stay all day in the resorts pool and just chill around drinking pina coladas. In the middle of your vacations, he will take you to a more secluded area and will open up about his issues , not about your relationship but about him as a person. He has many issues and he is a very difficult person to be around, so you haveto know he will never judge you. But he also doesnt know how to help you. This will make you hug him and you two can finnaly have a good, well-earned cry. Kiss him on the nose or on his head and tell him how much all this means to you and he will cry you a river and hold you till the dayhe dies, how can someone so late in his life means so, just so damn much? ♥
