'The villainess turns the Hourglass'... Mielle?
I think I don't hate Mielle because she wasn't intrinsically evil, although at first we think she was. In all honesty, if Aria didn't appear on her life Mielle's personality wouldn't have transformed. In a way Aria twisted Mielle.
That's even more evident on the second life, and what's important is that Aria was no innocent on either life. She was all that was told of her, and on the second life she acts premeditatedly to take revenge, she is evil on both, she simply is smarter on the second life. So she starts messing with Mielle on purpose, increasing the "twisting" effect she has on Mielle. But this Mielle is not the one that set her a trap on the first life, this Mielle is more or less innocent. Mielle acts from her insecurities and yes, envy, she feels against Aria, but this Mielle is a child. And tbh, her father never did anything to make the transition smooth for both girls or help them get along. He fed Aria's envy towards Mielle on both lifes, and never really tried to make Aria real part of the family. He gave her his name, that's it.
But Aria deliberately fed Mielle's resentment against her, and tried to steal everything from Mielle (and she did). At this point I was happy, because we only know what Aria knows from the first life. Problem is... Mielle wasn't the mastermind. She was just a child manipulated by Isis. We get to know it's Isis the one that increases Mielle's simple insecurities and discomfort regarding Aria into hatred. Yet Mielle doubts at times to do what Isis suggests. Isis pressures Mielle until the end, she has so much power as the future empress and Mielle's future sis-in-law, but once Mielle's position starts decaying, Isis abandones her. Mielle was simply used by Isis, and manipulated by both Isis and Aria.
Then Aria keeps attacking until she destroys Mielle, but at this point we know Mielle didn't really deserved as much.
I did wish Mielle had a redemption when Aria offered it, but it was just Aria's scheme to bury her completely (As I said, Aria wasn't innocent). Even Mielle's brother got mercy because he didn't bother Aria as much on this life, but Mielle was forced to by Aria herself and received nothing.
I do like Aria, but I don't love her. Aria is cunning, she knows she's not good nor innocent and she owns it. Is not my fav type of protagonist but I like her. But I empathize with Mielle as well, she wasn't the type of villain that deserved the worst.
Maybe I'll search FF for this.
