Kahayupan: An art exhibit - slash - carousel ride of society’s ills
Kahayupan: Political cartoons bare society's fangs to the animals who rule us. The art exhibit runs until Jun 28 at the Atelyer Gallery of the UP Main Library Bulwagan ng Dangal
Political cartoons are drawings that contain a commentary on current events expressing the artist’s opinion. Political cartooning requires not only artistic skill but insightful perception, satire and hyperbole to capture and draw attention to the oft-hidden foibles in society.
In hisMaster of Fine Arts thesis exhibition Kahayupan: A Bestiary of Political Animals as Visual Encapsulations in…

UP Naming Mahal
Pamantasang hirang
Ang tinig namin
Sana’y inyong dinggin
Malayong lupain
Amin mang marating
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Luntian at pula
Sagisag magpakailanman
At ipagdiwang
Bulwagan ng dangal
Humayo’t itanghal
Giting at tapang
Mabuhay ang pag- asa ng bayan
Mabuhay ang pag- asa ng bayan
The feelings come gushing through his body while the batch sings the school hymn. This sums up the four years they have spent in the institution. All the things finally coming to an end, and he never thought that it would be this sad. He will miss UP. After all, it did not just give him knowledge about the path he starts to carve, it gave him lessons in life, realizations, experiences, and the best of all, people he never knew would change his life.
“Mabuhay ang pag- asa ng bayan!”
They sing as they pound the air with their left hands. As soon as the song finishes, his chest starts to weigh heavier. He wants to hug his friends, but they are far away and he sees them hugging their seatmates. So he just stands there trying his best to not shed a tear. He notices his seatmate, Jane, who is wiping tears from her eyes. She is also sobbing. He sees her crying, thus making it harder for him not to. “Uy, si Jane umiiyak!” He teases, trying his best so that the attention will be on Jane; so that his feelings will somehow be alleviated. “Tangina, Jane. Bakit ka umiiyak?” He says to himself. “Fuck you, UP!” He exclaims in his mind. The fuck you figuratively means thank you, because all he has is gratitude to the institution, for giving him the best things in his life.

Landmark: Sunken Garden and Main Library
SUNKEN GARDEN
Right in the middle of the 2.2km Academic Oval is a huge field aptly named “Sunken Garden” due to its appearance. This area is a common ground for all UP students, no matter what. It’s an integral part of the UP college experience, whether you like sitting by one of the benches or running through the field itself. This is also where most events like UP Fair are held, so are a lot of PE classes. Recently, more of it was seen by the public eye through the new LizQuen movie, Alone/Together (pictured above).
MAIN LIBRARY (GONZALEZ HALL)
One of the oldest buildings in the campus, the main library is home to millions of books and the original version of the Oblation by Guillermo Tolentino, at the third floor. At its basement is also Bulwagan ng Dangal, a space intended for art; the library’s museum, if you may. Most students go here to study at any given time or eat lunch at the kiosks surrounding it.
It is made of concrete with pillars in front, and large UP logo in the middle. It also comes with 4 major divisions, 4 floors, and a museum at the basement.
This depicts the Main Library being the heart of UP Diliman because of its location in the middle of the academic oval. Also, the UP logo with eagle’s wings widespread symbolizes being the center of academic freedom Eagle patterned after the US President’s seal.

(warning: kinda feelsy) the oblation - by far - is my favorite UP symbol. nothing else can quite capture the feeling of hardships, sacrifice, and triumphs one feels inside and outside the university, both on a personal level and a national one. nothing has inspired me as much as this has in a lot of things i’ve done and am doing currently doing in college. half a sem left. let’s get it. LUPANG HINIRANG -a very lucky happenstance. After walking through Palma Hall, we existed in the direction of Lagmay Hall (College of Business Administration), then turned left towards González Hall, the main library. We were curious about an exhibition they are featuring at González Hall, at the Bulwagan Ng Dangal (University Heritage Museum), labeled Lupang Hinirang. A group of students gathered at the front lobby, and Tina spotted a few classmates among them, through whom we learned that they were waiting to start a guided tour. And so we joined!, and were treated to a wonderful, colorful and very informative session led by Cecilia De La Paz, PhD., Lead Curator, and assisted by Michael Tan, PhD., the University Chancellor himself. #lupanghinirang #bulwaganngdangal #universityheritagemuseum #universityofthephilippines #updiliman #collegedays #philippines #reunions #aleapoffaith #pilgrim #caminodesantiago #holyland #rome #songofthemoment 🎼 Sixpence None The Richer 🎶 Love Letters In The Sand https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu0N-riA9q_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1uq06a2jmt8zq

Jeepney' series), 1988
Critique on the artwork of Cesar Legaspi’s Jeepney series
Jeepney series (1985), the distinction of his color palette is a point of interest for viewers. This is because he has deuteranopia or red-green colorblindness, where red appears as brown or pink, and green as beige, and, for Legaspi, if the green is too pale it appears as light violet. Legaspi was able to work with this apparent shortcoming through practical means: he arranged his palette in a way that corresponded with the color wheel, so that even if he saw red and green as different colors he would know what they were based on their position. Through encouragement by his family and peers, and his own persistence and hard work, Legaspi was also able to develop his craft so much so that artists across generations would acknowledge him as a master colorist. Fellow National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz had once remarked that Legaspi’s works could be photographed well in black and white.
Legaspi’s style transformed Western visual grammar, specifically that of cubism, into localized textures and scenes, which enriched modern design and technique for subsequent generations of Filipino artists. Legaspi is also remembered as the ‘gentle master’ who worked with a younger artists on projects and what were later known as interaction paintings, a ‘jamming session’ on canvas where several artists worked together and a master would often either begin or finish the work.
2017 marks Legaspi’s birth centennial. In celebration of his life and works, his family have set up a series of exhibitions, which started with Lying in State at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (2 April – 4 June 2017) and the second exhibition, A Man and His Relations, currently on exhibit at UP Diliman’s heritage museum, Bulwagan ng Dangal, through 10 August 2017. Multi-media installations, including The Survivor, along with countless artworks, both his and those created out of interactions with peers and students, personal items, and tribute pieces are part of the second exhibition. From A Man and His Relations, the viewer is provided a picture of the social and filial support Legaspi had received throughout his life, and sets the idea that without the love and support of those around him, his craft would not have flourished.
The artwork uses different forms of artwork to make it creative. It uses texture, color that will catch the attention of the audience. The combination of the color is excellent and Cesar Legaspi is best known for his painting that uses different color but if we criticize base on the messages, audience might not understand or know the behind meanings of his artworks because it is clearly observed that the artwork is a kind of abstract which is not easy for the audience to understand. His artwork shows the national transportation of the Philippines which is it is the trademark of our country.

In Jose Santos Ardivilla’s MFA thesis exhibit of #politicalcartoons Kahayupan (“to be an animal”), he enjoins budding political commentators to bare their fangs at the powers-that-be through mockery. The exhibit runs until June 28 at the Atelyer Gallery of the UP Main Library Bulwagan ng Dangal.
