it’s late, and I do have to get up in the morning, though I may just go back to sleep afterwards. my church has been having very limited gatherings over the past few weeks, and in March they’re planning on opening them somewhat more, and restarting our kids program as well, so kids have somewhere to go while their parents are in the service, and tomorrow morning we’re having a training on how that all will take place, I’m assuming it’ll mostly be covering new protocols and the technicalities of how everything will work. They are holding it in person at the church but also on Zoom, and I’m just going to do Zoom of course because I am still always hesitant about going out, and an uber down to where it is is going to run me at least $25 each way, but I’m definitely not at a place where I can go back to public transit, not just because of the pandemic but more because of my stupid, not working legs that would definitely not cooperate with the distances of walking required to use public transit, even if it’s just a few blocks, it’s too much. I am still concerned that being at church and with the babies isn’t going to work well- that things are going to go wrong, like they did with soccer, and it’ll just be a dismal failure and I’ll be even more frustrated and upset with myself, but I have to try. I have to at least know there’s a reason I’m not doing something, not just too scared to take a chance and wind up stuck in my apartment for the rest of my life. I just hope nothing goes wrong especially when I’m with the babies because that concerns me greatly, but it’s really not like it would pose an actual risk to anybody, even if I’m like holding a baby I can control it enough that I can get to a sitting position and stable before I let it go and let it flail around until it gets its fill. I’m sure I’m going to have to give the other workers a disclaimer at the beginning of the service so they won’t be super alarmed or concerned if something happens, though I’ll still be pissed as hell that it did happen because I just hate feeling helpless oh so much, and just being in positions where I have to rely on other people to help me just drives me nuts, I don’t like sympathy I don’t like pity, don’t feel bad for me please, I’m fine, I’m fine. I’ll be fine, I can control this. I’m in control. 
sigh. that’s what I keep telling myself at least. I should probably actually get to describing my day now that I went on a whole rant about that. Alarm went off at 8:30 because it’s the Saturday of our once a month church legal clinic, which starts on Zoom at 8:45 for a brief powwow with everyone, then at 9 we start the consultation with the client until 9:45 at which point we go back and chat with everybody, and end roughly around 10. my friend from school that I know has been going to the same church as me for some time but of course between pandemic and everything else I haven’t actually seen her face to face, but I knew she was doing the justice center too and we were both in the general zoom room before we started so I private messaged her just a few things saying hi haha so that was cool. The actual consultation was fine, I’m always so anxious they’re going to ask me about stuff I don’t know about, but I did know this was another divorce case, and while I definitely don’t handle divorces at my actual work, it coincides with my work a lot of the time and from being in family law focused spaces I’ve learned quite a bit about it, so I know my way around it fairly well. this was a bit more complicated case so I did recommend she consult with a legal aid attorney to hopefully help her file things, because this was fair beyond what a self-represented litigant could handle, even with a legal advice clinic and the great resources we have to help pro se litigants, it was just way too much. but we got a start on things so she can at least have something to take to the attorney, so all of that was easy peasy. the notes we got prior to the consultation were from the client coordinator speaking to her earlier in the week, and also included a line that was like “I need a divorce, I know it’s wrong but...” and went on to cite spiritual and cultural baggage surrounding it, so when we were at the end of the session I just told her that something we say a lot in my work (we don’t actually say it a lot, generally just when spiritual concerns are interfering with a victim’s safety, which thankfully isn’t often, but the point is the same) is that people are more important than institutions, and that her worth as a person is much more important than the existence of a marriage that has clearly broken down beyond a state of repair by so much mistreatment and bad behavior from her spouse. And I really just felt like it was important to tell her that she is doing the right thing here, and that she should not feel guilty about doing this, even that it is explicitly stated in the bible (by Jesus, no less) that divorce is allowed when the woman (or either spouse practically) is being abused, and that emotional abuse is just as valid as any other type of abuse, and taking steps to protect herself was the best thing she could be doing right now. so I clearly had a lot of feelings about that, and our client support coordinator (that’s not what their actual title is but that’s what we call their equivalent at my job so it’s good enough) really echoed it and affirmed it from a cultural perspective as well (coordinator was Asian, client was South Asian) and the client ended up in tears and I just felt satisfied that I was able to get that message across, because very few things truly piss me off more than “Christians” trying to “save a marriage” at the cost of the safety of one of the parties, and it’s been well documented that abusers can very easily manipulate counseling situations and paint the other party out to be the one that is being ungodly because they want out of the marriage, and it’s a giant load of bullshit that loses sight of the importance of a human being and it’s such a perversion of what God actually wants for his children and is just the result of legalism taken to an extreme and people’s welfare not actually taken into consideration, only the rules. Thankfully I haven’t run into this situation too many times while doing this work (I can think of two off the top of my head, and both of those very clearly stuck with me, even several years later), and I have encountered a very opposite situation of a pastor being incredibly supportive and even accompanying the client to file and for court dates, and it was just so heartening for me to see- the pastor wrote me an email later that night saying thank you again, and I just expressed that as a Christian myself, I had so much gratitude at seeing his supporting a member of his church so strongly. so that positive experience has stuck with me at least. anyway. we wrapped things up and I did consider going back to bed lol but ended up choosing to stay up, I’ve had such a baking itch and now have a lot of things I have to eat haha but I had seen something a while back about caramelizing white chocolate, which sounded super intriguing and I really wanted to try it, but it very strongly focused on having high quality white chocolate for it to work, so I tried to get the fanciest I could from my instacart order and I couldn’t find the cocoa butter percentage listed (that’s apparently the most important part) so I thought it probably wasn’t good enough, but I was going to try anyway. it basically involves a low-temp oven (like 250f) with it being spread out on a baking sheet, and every ten minutes taking it out and like spreading it as it darkens and such, for like an hour. so I had started doing that but it was pretty obvious from the start it wasn’t going to work how it should, it was very grainy and just not cooperating, at around that same time friend messaged and asked if I wanted to do one of our taco bell and target runs that we’ve been doing lately like right then, and there wasn’t much else I could do with the chocolate at that point so I left that and got real clothes on and left for taco bell and then target. I was disappointed to find out taco bell’s build your own cravings box could only be ordered from their mobile app and not the drive-in, but as a result I ended up with chicken chalupas instead of my regular “seasoned beef” (because you know that’s deff high quality stuff) and they were actually really good, so I may continue those in the future, lol we’ll see. so we sat in the home depot parking lot to eat like we normally do then drove over to Target (the taco bell is farther away, so we have to drive there and then back to the Target) and go from there. I didn’t need too many things, mostly just toilet paper and a few random food items, and I ended up with toilet paper, a pint of my super favorite ice cream that’s like $8 but is so damn good it’s worth it, some actual popsicles, some lemonade (my sodastream canisters are MIA at the moment so I needed something else to make my water at least somewhat appealing), and these little frozen crushed garlic cubes that are each equal to one clove of garlic and I’ve heard very good things about, so I wanted to try that since I couldn’t find any garlic while making the chicken scampi the other night. so we checked out and I ended up obtaining a watermelon mountain dew, because I saw that and knew I needed to have it, though I still had baja blast left from taco bell, so the watermelon one is in my fridge yet to be opened (it’s a 20 oz bottle, not like a 2 liter). from there I got dropped off at home and put some stuff away and worked on a few things, eventually watching a few episodes of Scrubs before remembering I had some stuff recorded still that I hadn’t finished, so I watched 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, which were of course very good, and while viewing was looking at various recipes for oreo rice krispie treats which I’d had a random craving for and bought supplies from instacart the other day, and after reading a few I decided to just kinda make up my own rules and go with it haha I had to revive some slightly stale marshmallows (put them in a ziploc and then in a bowl of hot water until they soften) as well as some stale oreos (350f in the oven for 3 minutes), though there only ended up being like 4 left in that pack and the rest from the new one, so that worked. I browned like 6 tablespoons of butter in a skillet and then transferred it to a big pot, addedt the old marshmallows (like 3/4 of a bag) as well as a bag of new ones, then crushed up most of the oreos and mixed them with a good amount of rice krispies and went from there. when I first dumped them into the pan it was just like this giant blob and I was like welp perhaps I made too much but then it kind of settled down to a more reasonable size, just still pretty large but that’s fine. I went back to the tv and watched For Life, and then to the news and SNL for a bit before getting in the shower and getting ready for bed, and of course now it’s almost 2 am and I am oh so tired, so I’m going to go to bed now being that I have to wake up at 10:15 (much better than 8:45 for work, but still). @brokenspaceprince -- AND ANYONE ELSE WANTING TO VISIT GALAXY’S EDGE IN DISNEY WORLD (FLORIDA).
So I dont have a ton of super duper helpful information, just because I went there September 1-7th which was when Dorian was scheduled to hit Orlando. Of course, it never did. All we got was one night of rain. HOWEVER, thousands of people canceled their trips in fear. The parks were EMPTY. And I mean, EMPTY. So I don’t have any valuable data on crowd control or accurate wait times for Smuggler’s Run.
As it currently stands, Hollywood Studios is opening at 6am every morning (I think only until the end of Sept 2019) for people who are staying on property. My friend and I went September 2 and September 6th, and we got there at 6:30 am each time. One time, the wait was 40 mins for the ride, another was 20. We actually rode it about three times when the wait had gone back down to 30 one of the days. However, I HIGHLY URGE YOU DOWNLOAD THE DISNEY PARKS APP AND ADD YOUR DISNEY EXPERIENCE TO IT. THIS APP HAS THE WAIT TIMES FOR THE ATTRACTIONS ALL OVER THE PARKS. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT NOW AND KEEP AN EYE ON SMUGGLER’S RUN FROM HOME!!!!! I look at it every day to see if it gains more attention.
I’ve seen the wait times hit 80, 90, and 120. And that was with an EMPTY park. So just keep your eyes peeled. I do NOT know when they will open fast passes for the Galaxy’s Edge Attractions. AT this time, Rise of the Resistance is NOT currently open. I think it opens next month, so I can’t review that.
Smuggler’s run was good. It’s a mix between Star Tours (in Hollywood Studios outside of GE) and Mission: Space (Epcot). You have buttons to push to complete certain actions that happen during your flight. They will light up when you need to press them. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy a highly immersive flight inside the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. I loved it, but it wasn’t quite as cool as I thought it would be. Not to worry, it was still AMAZING. The queue line is very decorative and hilarious. You won’t be bored waiting in line. Also, right before you’re ushered into the Falcon to fly it, you will come to a very memorable location upon the Falcon that I will show you in my photos below B)
The blue milk is tastier than the green milk, but they’re both delicious. You can get them alcoholic or non alcoholic and they are DAIRY FREE. They are almost like a slushie, but they use plant dairy instead of animal dairy so it shouldn’t upset anyone unless you have specific allergies. Very inclusive of Disney, I was impressed. Get the milk, you won’t be disappointed. Also, Galaxy’s Edge had only been open 2 days before Mecca and I got there -- so lots of cast members were asking us what our favorite flavors were when they saw us holding milk!
Chewbacca, Rey, First Order officers and Storm Troopers walk around randomly. I’ve heard Kylo does too, but I never saw him. Rey stops and takes pictures and interacts with guests. Chewie doesn’t do photo ops (but there is a spot to meet Chewie, BB8, and Vader at the Launching Pad not too far outside of GE in Hollywood Studios). Chewie recruits kids for a “special mission” which is really adorable. I won’t spoil that for you. The FO officers and the Storm Troopers have very limited photo op time. They’re really performing, so it’s hard for them to take photos. Try to just enjoy them without bugging them for photos.
Droid Depot is amazing. There, you can assemble your own BB-Unit or R2-Unit. It costs 99 dollars. The droids, as far as I know, are remote controlled and you can purchase a personality chip for them to beep and boop at you. They come in all sorts of colors so they’re highly customizable. You pull parts off of a conveyor belt and assemble the droid yourself. If you just want Droid Merch (which I did) you can also just look at the shop. It has merchandise with all sorts of droids on them!
ALSO, here is where you can meet the life-like, 25 thousand dollar R2D2 by the registers!!!! He is AMAZING. You MUST stop in the droid depot, if only to meet R2. He is fantastic. He followed Mecca and I around the store while we shopped and made conversation with us. He will beep back at you if you talk to him, he will react if you say certain things to him. Mecca told him he was her favorite, and he shrieked and spun in a circle. Very adorable and interactive. Definitely go meet him.
There is also a spot where you can build your own lightsaber. I did not go in there because it is 200 dollars to do so and I did not want to tempt myself. The sabers look amazing though, I saw multiple people with them around the parks.
There are two places to eat as far as I know. One is more “quick service” and the other is a restaurant. We did not eat at either place because we are picky eaters and we also went at 630 am - not a great time for dinner LOL.
Both of these eateries looked amazing and interactive. They were empty, of course, but I KNOW that when normal park crowding resumes, you WILL NEED A RESERVATION TO GET INTO THESE PLACES. YOU CAN MAKE DINING RESERVATIONS MONTHS IN ADVANCE TO YOUR TRIP. DISNEY IS VERY ACCOMODATING TO ALLERGIES SO PUT ANY ALLERGIES ON YOUR RESERVATION. MAKE. RESERVATIONS. 
That being said, I’m not sure when Fast Pass will become available for the rides, but IF YOU STAY ON PROPERTY YOU CAN ALSO SELECT FAST PASSES MONTHS IN ADVANCE. DO THIS. I CANNOT STRESS IT ENOUGH.
Aside from those hot spots, there is a market place that has TONS of little shops inside of it. We did not stop at every single shop so I cannot tell you what specifically each store sold. I know one shop sold all sorts of critters!!!!! From the SW movies new and old. There is a first order shop if you’re with the first order, and there is a resistance shop. There are some outposts with resistance merch too! 
The decor of the place is phenomenal. You really feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet. You are ON BATUU when you are there. Fully. The cast members even speak to you as such, and so does Rey when you meet her! It’s 600000% immersive even for Mecca and I, as adults. Imagine what it will be like for kids!
There are lots of places to obtain FREE WATER all over Galaxy’s Edge - and the Coke stands sell Coke bottles shaped like Thermal Detonators!!! They’re super cute and such a novelty. Be prepared to spend a lot of money for that coke, though. IT’s like a 7 dollar coke just because of the bottle.
Oh, also, they speak in SW lingo while you’re there. My apologies, it will be seven CREDITS, not seven dollars.
All in all, it was truly an amazing experience that I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone. I will be returning in July 2020 so I will get to review Rise of the Resistance then since it will be open. I will also review anything that might be new (character encounters and such) between now and then.
SIDE NOTES: Hollywood Studios still has Star Tours. It is OUTSIDE Of Galaxy’s Edge and it has been UPDATED to include TFA and TLJ characters! It’s randomized, so you still may encounter some older characters as well! The Jedi Training still happens RIGHT ALONGSIDE of Star Tours and it now includes Kylo Ren (which I think has been there for quite some time now). Little tiny Jedi’s get to go toe to toe with Ren and Vader. It’s adorable.
The Launching Pad is over by Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Here, you will meet Chewbacca, BB-8 (yes, hes interactive. you may speak to him and he will speak back, and the cast members will translate for you. very cute), and Darth Vader. We met all of them and had glorious experiences. Very well done. There are also some shops at the end of the encounters here. 
AND SPECIFICALLY FOR @brokenspaceprince WHO ASKED ABOUT TRANSPORT FROM THE ORLANDO AIRPORT TO THE RESORTS - yes, the magical express still operates. You HAVE to be staying at a DISNEY RESORT on Property though, or it will not take you to your hotel. It’s fantastic. The Orlando airport as a whole is a great airport. You can’t get lost.

VIRGINIA
2021 Jul 7 (Wed) – We have been working furiously on finalizing plans for the NY Caravan.  We have had to change some things.  One restaurant said they are changing their prices every week because of the high price of chicken.  Really??? How do you run a business like that?
     We set off for NY tomorrow, traveling through PA.  Joe & Diane and Rick & Brenda will travel with us.  Ed & Sue were supposed to go with us but they are stuck here getting their rig fixed.  Maybe they’ll be able to join us in a day or two.  Hank & Brenda will be meeting us at the next campground in Intercourse, PA.  We will be there for 3 nights.  The pre-caravan is on!
 2021 Jul 4 (Sun) – We took Ed & Sue and Joe & Diane over to the PX and Commissary this morning.  Neither of them is retired so they are not entitled to shop in either store. We show our ID and they get to buy what they want.  
       After lunch, we did laundry.  Sheba hawked up a hairball last night and left it on the sheet.  So we pulled the sheet off and took it along with the rest of the dirty clothes, over to the laundry room.
      We all enjoyed a barbecue for dinner.  Afterward, we watched the fireworks that people were setting off across the bay.  There was quite a bit.
 2021 Jul 3 (Sat) – The four of us went to Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill.  It was quite interesting.  Washington had to be convinced to put the stills on his farm but once he did, he had five installed.  His first year of operation, he made more money from whiskey sales than he did from all of his other endeavors combined.  With his gristmill, he was producing flour, grits, cornmeal, and livestock feed.  He was quite the entrepreneur.  
      We stopped at the post office to pick up a package the Rick & Brenda have been waiting for, but it hadn’t arrived.  Then we shopped at the Commissary.  Brenda made hamburgers and baked beans for dinner.  We put out hors oeuvres and drinks for happy hour.  Joe & Diane and Ed & Sue came over to join us for dinner.  (Ed and Sue were supposed to be here but their RV and car both broke down on the way to Fort Belvoir.  They are currently staying at a hotel on base while they wait for repairs.)
    After dinner, we all gathered around for a campfire.
 2021 Jul 2 (Fri) – Joe & Diane lent their car to the couple that broke down.  Not only did their motorhome breakdown, but their car did as well.  Both are getting worked on today.  Since Joe & Diane lent their car to their friends, they needed a ride to the commissary.  We took them at 9 this morning.  They picked up some items at the PX, then food at the commissary.
     At 1:00 PM, we met Rick & Brenda and drove to the Pope-Leheighy House.  It is a home that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a beautiful architecture and we enjoyed the tour.  Located next to the house was Woodlawn.  This was a beautiful colonial home built by George Washington for his nephew and granddaughter-in-law.  He gave them the house and 2,000 acres from his Mount Vernon property. Unfortunately, we were not able to tour the house.  They were just finishing up a needlepoint display and they had taken all the house decorations down for the display.  They will be putting everything back together and opening to tours again after July 25.
     At dinnertime, I cooked zucchini chips and Paul barbecued an Alaskan salmon. Rick & Brenda made the salad and cooked up some scallops.  It was a good meal.  Afterward, we had a campfire.
 2021 Jul 1 (Thu) – We went food shopping at Amazon Green today. It was a near digital experience.  They have a shopping cart with a scanner.  You dial up the app on your smart phone.  Then as you pick up each item you want to buy, you scan it on your phone.  Shopping bags are already located in your shopping cart; you put the items you scan in your bags.  When you are done, your credit card is charged (Amazon has that info on file) and you leave.  You have no need to go to the cashier.  We changed our minds at the last minute and did not use the app.  I do not like anything that holds on to the information about my credit cards or bank accounts.  We shopped the old fashioned way.
     I went to Great Clips for a haircut.  I tried to talk with the hairdresser but she spoke very poor English and she was hard to understand.  After I got home, I did more chopping on my bangs as I felt they were still too long.
     We stopped at Baja Fresh for lunch.  It was a kind of Mexican fast food place.  The food was ok.  I cooked an elbow macaroni dish for dinner which we shared with Rick & Brenda.  
     I drove to the campground office to pick up the check-in documents for 3 folks coming into the campground.  The office closed at 3 and they still weren’t in.  George & Sue arrived and I gave them their paperwork.  Joe & Diane arrived later around 6; the couple traveling with them had a breakdown and they left them on the road waiting for a tow. Joe & Diane will be traveling with us through Pennsylvania to the New York caravan.
2021 Jun 30 (Wed) – We drove over to WalMart to get an oil change in the truck. While it was being serviced, we walked across the road to Panera Bread and had bagels for breakfast.  We then walked next door and wandered through the World Market then Home Goods looking for new rugs for the RV.  We didn’t find what we wanted.  
     When the truck was done, we drove back to the base PX and bought a new grill.  Paul and Rick had priced the grill on the internet last night and the PX was the cheapest price.  Add to that the fact that they don’t charge tax in the PX and we had a real good savings.
     Merlin came by us wearing his face mask.  He said he started feeling bad last night and worse today.  So he went to the base hospital and got tested for COVID-19 . . . just in case.
     Bonnie has had diarrhea for on and off for the past five days.  We cooked chicken and rice for her one day.  It seemed to help then things got worse again.
     Two rigs have dropped out of the New York caravan. That brings us down to 16 paying rigs. One more drop out, and we will be at the threshold for canceling the caravan.  Hope we don’t lose anyone else.
 2021 Jun 29 (Tue) – The four of us went to the National U.S. Army Museum.  It is new and we haven’t been here before.  We spent over 3 hours wandering around the displays.  There was so much to read and look at.  We had lunch in the cafeteria.  During our visit, we found out that the museum only opened in October last year, 2020, then closed a month later.  They just reopened 2 weeks ago.  
     After we got back, we had dinner together.  Brenda made pasta and I made salad.  Everything was very good.  Merlin was too tired to join us.
 2021 Jun 28 (Mon) – We went into town to look for a grill. We couldn’t find what we wanted. We went to the PX and looked for an RV dealer nearby but there were none.  We picked up pet food at Pet Smart and found a toy for Sheba.  We were delighted!  Lunch was at Famous Dave’s.  I had ribs and Paul had burnt tips.  The food was on the spicy side.
     Rick & Brenda came over for drinks.  We made margaritas.  Another SMART member, Merlin, pulled in today.
 2021 Jun 27 (Sun) – We went into Washington, D.C. for a 12:15 p.m. admission to the International Spy Museum.  Brenda & Rick drove.  We had been there in 2013.  The building and entire area was totally different from when we were last there. The place was huge!  You could easily take 3-4 hours to see everything. The museum was very crowded and it was difficult to get near much of the displays.  But we all managed to enjoy the place any way.
     When we got back to the campground, Rick & Brenda brought their grill over and we enjoyed steak, potatoes and salad.  We visited afterward as it was too breezy to work on the travel guides. We have time to get to them. There’s no hurry.
 2021 Jun 26 (Sat) – We did our laundry early this morning. The laundry room was full of gnats and other flying insects.  We brought wipes to clean off the tables and machines so we could fold our clothes. It was gross!
     We also drove to Food Lion to pick up some groceries and to Office Depot to get the printed copies of the Travel Guide.  We stopped at McDonald’s for lunch; something we don’t do very often.
     We drove to George Mason Gunston Hall with Rick & Brenda this afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. tour  It was an 1800th century home of one of America’s founding fathers.  Mason wrote Virginia’s Bill of Rights, which Jefferson later modeled to write the Bill of Rights for the new nation.  It was a lovely home and had several outbuildings on the property to explore as well.
     Afterward, we stopped at Fair Winds Brewing for beer and BBQ.  We all sat out on the patio and enjoyed beers (except me since I don’t care for beer) and food.  When we got back, we started work on putting the travel guides together. It was slightly breezy and made it difficult to work but we were able to get 11 books done.    
 2021 Jun 25 (Fri) – We finished up the Travel Guide this morning. Brenda and Rick picked us up and we drove first, to Office Depot, then to Occoquan, the quaint little town we discovered a few years ago.  We had lunch at a restaurant on a patio overlooking the Occoquan River.  There were several people in kayaks and on paddle boards.  
     After lunch, we walked down the picturesque street with its historic buildings. We popped into a chocolate shop and had a wonderful visit with the owner of the establishment.  He gave us quite an education on cacao beans and the chocolate process.  We all bought chocolate bars.
     More walking and exploring, then we stopped in to the VFW Lodge.  We sat at the bar and ordered cocktails only to be told they only serve wine and beer.  It didn’t fit the bill so we left.
     We went to a Tiki Bar on the river and had cocktails on the patio then returned to the campground around 5:30 p.m.
 2021 Jun 24 (Thu) – We pulled up stakes and left Fort A.P. Hill at 10:15 a.m.  It was an easy two hour drive to Fort Belvoir.  We had our site number already so we drove directly to the campground rather than stop first at Outdoor Recreation.  Oops!  There was a gated entry into the campground and no room to turn around.  I called the office and got the gate code and we parked on our assigned campsite.  After set up, we hurried over to Outdoor Rec, got checked in, got our permit and other paperwork, then rushed to the main gate to help Brenda & Rick get passes onto base.  They were already there and walking out of the visitor center with their passes.  We got in front of them and led the way to the campground.  Since we had the gate code and they knew their site assignment, we led them directly to the campground.  We advised them to sign in at Outdoor Rec after they were set up.  They didn’t hear (or understand) what we said and took their time setting up.  By the time they went over to check in, the office was closed (open from 9 to 3).
     At 4 p.m., Brenda and Rick came over and we had happy hour until 5:30 p.m.  When they were gone, I popped a pizza in the oven for dinner.  Gene (President of the Nomads) and Sharon stopped by.  They are only here for the one night.  After pizza, we played card games.  SYN (Screw Your Neighbor) and Kings in the Corner were a lot of fun. They left when the sun was going down and it was getting cold.
     Tonight was the last Supermoon of the year.  It is called a Strawberry Moon, because it is when the strawberries are in season.  It was a beautiful sight.
 2021 Jun 23 (Wed) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the Travel Guide for the caravan.  We are pushing to get this done so we can get it copied at the next town. There won’t be any big towns after we leave Fort Belvoir.
2021 Jun 22 (Tue) – We packed up and left Verona at 9:25 a.m. It rained on and off during the drive to Bowling Green where we are caped at Fort A.P. Hill.  It is a fairly new campground with full hookups.  The campground is about half full.  We have a pull through site with no shade.  We are only here for two nights.  We will try to finish up the travel guide so we can get it copied while we are at Fort Belvoir.  We don’t think there will be any big cities between there and when we start the caravan in New York.    
2021 Jun 21 (Mon – First Day of Summer) – We stayed in the campground all day today, working on the travel guide and maps of the NY Caravan.  We only have a few days left before we start to join up with other members of the caravan in D.C.  We are almost done. 
2021 Jun 20 (Sun) – We drove to the Grand Caverns this morning. I bought a two-for-one ticket on Groupon and $40 tickets wound up costing us $19.99.  That’s a pretty good deal!  The caverns were fantastic; every bit as phenomenal as Mammoth or Carlsbad Caverns.  The rooms were huge and there were lots of speleoforms to admire.  In addition, they had formations called shields.  No one knows how they form but they seem to be unique to these caverns.      
      We went to Rack ‘Em Smack ‘Em for lunch.  It was a ribs place.  They were OK. Paul had mac & cheese.  Still pink like them put ketchup in it.      After the caves, we went to the Barren Ridge Winery.  We were supposed to make a reservation ahead of time but didn’t. They were able to seat us out on the patio any way.  I didn’t like any of the white wines.  Paul liked one of the reds and we both enjoyed the port.  So we bought 2 bottles of port and one bottle of the red wine.      
      I cooked some meatballs for dinner that we had bought at the supermarket the other day. They were so spicy hot!  I took one bite and pushed them aside.  We wound up heating up a pizza for dinner.      
      The campground pretty much emptied out today.  I am glad we left for the day so we didn’t get caught up in all the activity of so many trailers moving out. 
      One of the campgrounds we will be going to upstate during the caravan tried to call but I told them to get back to us on Tuesday when we move.  Hopefully, the cell phone signal will be better. 
2021 Jun 19 (Sat) – We worked on the travel guide.  At noon, we packed it in and drove into town for lunch at the Edelweiss Restaurant.  It was a German restaurant with an authentic German waitress.  The food was good, as was the wine and beer.   Next stop was at PetCo to pick up dog food then to Kroeger for groceries and cat food.  Since the cell phone signal is so bad in camp, we made a couple of calls to friends and our grandson while we were out and the signal was good.      
      The campground is chock full of campers.  There is a lazy river that runs next to the campground where they have tubing. Groups of tubers walk by with their big tubes on the way to the launch point.  The day is very warm and muggy.  I bet the water feels good.      
      Bonnie woke Paul up at 2:30 a.m.  She has diarrhea.  She’s been good for a long time.  We stopped giving her the supplements and goat’s milk when we started making sure the food we give her is AAFCO approved.  That seems to have been good enough.  We’ll see if this is one day or another bout. 
2021 Jun 18 (Fri) – Work on the travel guide is going slow. The problem is the very poor internet signal here in the campground.  We just can’t connect which makes it impossible for Paul to get the maps done.        
      We finally took a break at noon and drove into town for lunch.  Staunton (pronounced STAN-TEN) is a very lovely, historic town with lots of brick buildings and round towers.  We had lunch at the Clock Tower Eats & Sweets. The food was bland and unappealing. And the waitress was slow.      
      After lunch, we walked down the block to the Camera Heritage Museum.  What a fascinating place!  The museum, if you could call it that, was a small store front jam packed with cameras from all eras.  The owner followed us around the store as we admired all the cameras, regaling us with stories of cameras and pictures.  His collection was amazing, yet he said it only represented about 25% of his total collection.  He is trying to raise money to buy a building that can house his collection.  Trip Advisor voted him among the top world attractions.  Quite an honor.  Unfortunately, he needs to raise millions of dollars before he can reach his goal.  He only has four years left to do it.      
      When we returned to the campground, there was a long line of RVs coming in.  We sat in our chairs and watched droves of campers arrive all afternoon long.  The campground of more than 200 sites filled up almost completely.  There are lots of children and golf carts.  The smell of outdoor cooking and campfires fills the air. We tried to have a campfire but it was too hot sitting in the sun in front of the fire.  We got up halfway through and went back in to the air conditioning to watch the fire through the window.  Lol. 
2021 Jun 17 (Thu) – We went to the Augusta Military Museum. When a soldier returned home after the Civil War, he found all the schools burned down.  Wanting the boys/men to have a decent education, he built a school.  It later became a military academy when it was obvious that better discipline was needed. But it was not intended to be a preparatory school for military service, although many of the boys went on to service in the military.  The school remained in service until 1984 when it closed due to financial difficulties. The museum was in the home of the former schoolmaster and exhibits were displayed in four small rooms on the first floor.  We also watched a half hour video about the school and the men who attended.      
      Next, we went to a local restaurant for lunch.  The interior had tables and booths arrayed around a large, open room. The waitress was very fast and efficient – a delight down here in the south.  The food, however, was terrible.  I had a chicken salad wrap that had too much vinegar in it.  Paul had a mixed wrap that was very dry (it was ham, turkey, cheese, tomato and lettuce).  It needed mayonnaise.  His mac & cheese was pink, making us think they put ketchup in it.      
      After lunch, we went to the Stonewall Brigade Museum.  It was all about the history of a local unit from the French & Indian Wars to today’s Gulf War.  It was small compared to many other museums we have been to but it accomplished its purpose.      The campground is filling up.  It will be full this weekend.  The camper next to us has two large dogs that they don’t leash.  In addition, the owner doesn’t pay attention to what his dogs are going so that means he’s not picking up after them.  We will have to make a complaint.      
      The Verizon cell service around here sucks!  I can’t open the mail and other postings just sit there.  The Internet is inaccessible at this point.  Even in town, the service is severely limited. This town must be down in a big hole. **sigh**  Not even the cell phone booster we bought is helping. 
2021 Jun 16 (Wed) – We rode to Staunton today. First stop was at the Yelping Dog for lunch.  It was a pizza and taproom.  We each had a glass of wine and a sandwich.  After lunch, we walked up and down the street.  The town was very quaint and had lots of historic buildings and shops.        
      Next, we went to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum.  There were three buildings.  The first one we entered was the home that Woodrow Wilson was born in.  He only lived in the house for 18 months then his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There was lots of family in Staunton though, so they came back to visit often.  Woodrow Wilson always thought of Staunton, VA as his home even though his family moved several times.  He was the only president to earn a doctorate despite the fact that he had a learning disability that made it very difficult for him to read.  What an interesting character he was!      
      The middle building was a private home where they placed the ever popular gift shop. The third building was the museum. There was a display of a WWI trench. That kind of thing always makes me shudder.  It was thought to be so cutting edge in its day yet it was so barbaric.  Ugh.  We walked through rooms with lots of plaques to read and artifacts to view. 
2021 Jun 15 (Tue) – We packed up and left Fancy Gap at 9:30 a.m. The weather (finally) was clear with blue skies.  It was a long drive.  We stopped at a humongous truck stop.  They had 500 parking spaces for trucks with a truck wash, medical testing for drugs, a clinic, a steak place, a fast food eatery, and fuel station.  We just parked to use the bathroom and walk the dog and then were on our way.  We arrived at the campground at 1 p.m.        
      This is a KOA.  It is a large campground spread out over low hills with lots of grass and trees.  It is very pretty to look at.  There is a river and waterfalls at the back of the park. They rent tubes for campers to float on the river.  There are lots of things to do – a large pool, four hot tubs (currently closed), pool tables, a video arcade, horseshoe pits, etc.  We have a 30-amp and water hookup but no sewer.  The bathrooms are pretty far away.  There are rabbits everywhere!  They even have signs us warning not to pick up or chase the rabbits and they sell food to feed them.      The cell phone signal in this campground is the pits!  I can’t post on Facebook and it is difficult to research anything on the internet.  This will be a tough week since we have to start coordinating with the various campgrounds and venues for the caravan.      
      We spent the afternoon and evening working on the travel guide.  Things are starting to come together nicely. 
2021 Jun 14 (Mon) – We took a ride into town for lunch at the Gap Deli.  The food was pretty good.  Afterward, we drove around the area for a bit.  This a beautiful area.  Lots of greenery and well built homes. 
2021 Jun 13 (Sun) – We stayed in the campground today, working on the paperwork for the caravan.  We did the laundry and bought dinner from the office.  The smoker was going all day and the smell was very appealing.  
2021 Jun 12 (Sat) – We took a break and went for a drive, stopping at 13 Bones for lunch.  The ribs were not that good yet the place was packed.  We figured it must be something pertinent to this region.  We also stopped at WalMart to do some shopping. Returned home in the worst rainstorm. Ugh.  Thunderstorms rolled through and poor Sheba spent the day hiding in the closet. 
2021 Jun 11 (Fri) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the documents for the caravan.  Our tail gunner had put together maps but we couldn’t get the program he used to mesh with the program we are using to create the Travel Guide.  Paul wound up having to recreate all the maps.  Ugh.  What a waste of effort!
      We had lunch and dinner at the KOA BBQ office.  We met a couple parked to us from NC.  We had a very interesting conversation until our dinner was delivered.  Ray asked for information about SMART.  Paul gave him a magazine.  We would have given him a brochure but it got rained on the other day and we lost all the brochures we had sitting out for people to take.  We will have to send for more.
 2021 Jun 10 (Thu) – We went food shopping at the Food Lion today.  Before then, we stopped at Aunt Bea’s Dining Room for lunch.  It was a kind of cafeteria.  You picked your food from a variety of items on a hot table, then sat at a table in the dining room.  It was ok.
 2021 Jun 9 (Wed) – We took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway today.  There are so many lush, green trees in this state.  We stopped at the Mabry Mill, an historic Appalachian homestead on the parkway.  It had a mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and other artifacts.  A ranger was working in a shed on a weaving loom.  She explained the process to us and showed examples of her work.  It was an interesting stop.  Also along the Blue Ridge Parkway was a rail fence exhibit that showed several different types of fence made by wooden posts and poles.

      We stopped at a winery in Floyd.  You could only have a tasting if you were fully vaccinated.  Since I am not vaccinated, we sat out on the patio and had a glass of wine with bread, cheese, meats, and fruits.  Neither of us enjoyed the wine but the experience was nice.  It rained pretty hard most of the day.
      The program for the Max Air Fan in the kitchen arrived.  Unexpectedly, it worked!  The fan is now in action again.  How wonderful!
 2021 Jun 8 (Tue) – Well, I am back from New York. It was a long 3 weeks.  I had originally planned to help out my sister, Susan, after knee surgery but she changed her mind and cancelled the surgery.  My plans were already made so I left them alone.  I stayed at her house and borrowed her Tesla during my stay.  That is quite a car!  Great for a speed demon like my sister.
      I had a PET scan at Memorial Sloan Kettering.  The results were spectacular!  There were no metabolically active lymph nodes.  Unfortunately, my oncologist moved to Texas and a new doctor was assigned to me but could not fit me into her schedule.  I will see her at my next appointment.  I asked the nurse if I could stop the chemotherapy but she said to continue as usual until I talk with the doctor.
      I also saw the cardiologist.  He ordered a stress test which I passed with flying colors.
      I got to visit with my brother, Chris, and brother and girlfriend, Dennis & Denise, over the holiday weekend.  I took my grandson, Caiden, out a few times and visited with my daughter and husband, Lilah & Kenny.  I also stopped over my Cousin Claude’s house and visited with him and his daughter, Kathy.  I also caught up with our friend, Jan, who happened to be outside in her garden when I drove by.  She had knee surgery and is recovering nicely.  And I got to have dinner with my daughter, Gina.
      Susan volunteers at a wildlife rescue center and I was able to go with her twice.  That place was overrun with raccoons, squirrels, and ducklings.  Wow!  There were many other types of animals and birds there as well.  Susan’s daughter, Sharon, flew home for a few days and we went into the city for a day.  Sharon has ongoing dental treatments at a specialist in New York City.  Except for less people and cars, everything looked the same. 
      My flight home was disrupted by thunderstorms and I wound up spending a night at a hotel in Baltimore.  But I ultimately made it home to my honey.  While I was gone, Paul got the Spyder Control program fixed and we are back on the road!  We were afraid that we would have to cancel the caravan if we didn’t get the problem resolved.  Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Lowest to Highest Route April 2018
​Day 1
Woke up at 4am in my cheap hotel room in Ridgecrest. I drove to Death Valley to start dropping off my water/food caches in bright orange Home Depot buckets, I duct tape the shit outta them and throw heavy rocks on top because if one of these caches gets messed with the hike is over. I get to Lone Pine at around 11am and park my car in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. I'm finishing placing the odds and ends into my pack and realize I am shaking. Holy fuck, I'm actually doing this! it's not just a dream. I open the Uber app no luck, no cars. Same with Lyft. I go into the local outfitters on the corner and get a number for a local shuttle service. I go wait at the McDonalds for Paul to arrive.
I get dropped off at Badwater at about 3pm. I patiently wait in line to get my picture taken in front of the Badwater Basin sign. I start making my way past the tourists ducking selfie sticks and dodging children. I walk past the last set of tourists like a dishonored soldier banished to the wasteland.
I make my way north of the actual L2H route to see the actual lowest point in the western hemisphere. A small pile of rocks in the middle of the salt flat. Fun fact: it's not actually flat. It's actually quite bumpy and in certain areas I'm sinking up to my ankles in mud. Because I got such a late start I'm trying to keep a quick pace. Although I have my umbrella, the sun is beating on my legs and also bouncing off the white salt.
I am questioning my life choices. 2 hours in and I am huddled under my umbrella trying to cool off. I contemplate writing "I should have gone surfing" in the salt just so the park rangers get a chuckle when they recover my body. I feel like I could Butttchug a gallon of Gatorade.
I finally cool off enough to continue my journey. I decided to walk at a more moderate pace and eventually the sun falls behind telescope peak. The terrain gets more bumpy as i continue out of the basin. The mixture of salt and mud make me feel as if I have landed on the planet of Wank and Poo.
After another couple miles I start seeing the first shrubbery and spring flowers. It's a welcome site to see signs of life outside of the basin. I make my way to the road to Hanaupah canyon and night hike for about another hour before collapsing on the side of the road cowboy camping under a rich tapestry of stars.
Day 2
Is this a road? is it a riverbed? Will it twist my ankle? I make my way up the south fork of Hanaupah Canyon. This day sets the precedent that will repeat for the majority of the route. Will there be water there and why is this so fucking hard to walk on? That's the L2H in a nutshell.
Oh shit!! My first rattlesnake! I make a wide berth around the murder worm.
Luckily I come across a creek as I'm down to a liter of water. Hanaupah spring is pumping and I'm grateful I don't have to bushwack to get to the spring. I fill up to my 6L capacity as the park rangers couldn't tell me if Tuber Canyon springs were running or not.
I take a side road up to Shorty's Mine before realizing NOPE.You don't get an easy road walk up to telescope ridge. Time to scramble up the north side of Hanaupah canyon. Climbing up scree with 6 litters of water is totally fun! That is a total lie. It's not fun.
I make my way to the ridge above the canyon and begin making my way up towards telescope ridge. It's getting dark and I find the flattest spot I can on the ridge to crash out among the Pinyon Pines.
Day 3
Scree, scree never changes. 2 steps up slide 1 step down. I'm starting to feel the altitude at this point. I'm sucking air. No one ever makes videos about this part of the route. I wonder if I'm going the wrong way because no one ever complains about this. Well, listen to me, the climb up to telescope is maximum suckage. Finally after many breaks i make it to the ridge. I don't bother with summiting telescope as I had already accomplished that back in February. I make my way down Telescope trail down to tuber canyon, it's nice to walk on a real trail for the first time this trip if only for about a mile and a half. I also get the first glimpse of my destination from the ridge, the snowcapped Sierras.
Descending into tuber canyon things get a bit more green again. The spring is dry when i reach the bottom of the canyon but luckily filled a couple smartwater bottles with snow near telescope peak. I continue down the wash and see murder worm number 2. I don't shit my pants that bad this time, it's old hat at this point.
I come across riparian vegetation and find a 2 inch deep spring it is occupied with bees. I scoop 2 liters of murky water filled with tadpoles and pre filter it through my shirt to remove the muck and floaters.
Oh that wasn't horse shit this whole time! A wild burrow yells at me from across the wash and ascends to a perch above. This is the place where he rules over his pack plotting revenge on the grandchildren of the miners that abandoned their ilk in this god forsaken wasteland.
I make my way out of Tuber Canyon at dusk passing the ruins of an Impala that shows up in every L2H blog. A few more more miles and I collapse next to my water cache #1 chugging half a gallon and sleeping in a ditch for the night.
Day 4
I get to have a burger today. I just have to make it to Panamint springs and a restaurant awaits. I just have to make it down the entirety of Panamint valley to get there. Not much to say. it's the easiest walk of the trip so far, a 4wd road and then cutting over through a smooth flat.
A bit of cross country walking and I eventually make it to a $15 bacon burger, salad, and fries. I pay 3 dollars and am able to take a shower at the campgrounds across the street at the RV park. I almost feel human again.
I fill a couple of liters up and walk the couple miles to Darwin Falls. This is an amazing oasis in the middle of the wasteland. I don't know if I'll ever do the L2h again but I definitely will visit Darwin Falls. It's like someone dropped a G.E.C.K. here. Green trees, waterfalls and fun class 3 scrambles to the top of the canyon. I make my way up a scree field to China garden to see Iconic L2H sight #2, the goldfish. They swim up to my fingers as I fill my water bottles. Some are the size of Coi. I think about keeping one as a pet in a water bottle for the rest of the L2H but I'm not sure they would eat cliff bars.
I make way up Darwin canyon, it's getting dark and i'm looking for a flat place to crash, unfortunately King Burro told his minions to poop in every flat spot in the wash. I find a place and have a rough night sleep with the wind whipping around me. Also I hear rocks crashing in the middle of the night, Burros make terrible ninjas.
Day 5
I make my way out of Darwin canyon. Fighter jets scream overhead. Besides that it's non eventful. I make my way to cache #2. as I'm filling my bottles for a 20 mile water carry a CHP sees me from the road. He shouts out his loud speaker "ARE YOU OKAY?" I try shouting back "IM JUST A HIKER" He returns with "IF YOU ARE OKAY, WAVE YOUR HANDS!" I wave them and he kicks bricks. I think if i was in trouble I would be waving my hands anyways and he just wanted to avoid paper work.
This is a long boring 4wd roadwalk through a Joshua Tree forest. it seems like it's gonna be easy but the L2H decides I should walk into 20MPH winds. I don't really take pics here I just hold hands with Ms. Misery and set up my tent for the first time 3 miles outside of Cerro Gordo ghost town. It's actually nice to put in some bigger miles for the day.
Day 6
UPHILL BAAAYBEEE!! I get to Cerro Gordo where the caretaker Robert is supposed to have 2 gallons of water waiting for me. I wander the scattering of buildings looking for jugs andd yell out a "HELOOOO" Robert emerges from a building and says "Hell son it's 26 degrees out, come in for a coffee and sit by the fire." This small act of kindness makes me wanna cry. I sit there for 2 hours listening to his tales of the shady world of the mining industry. As I leave he tells me to make sure to take the middle road out because the air force has an installation on the high road and I might catch a stinger missile.
I make my way out of Cerro Gordo passing mining ruins. I'm determined to make it to Lone Pine tonight. I WANT PIZZA!! I walk along a 4wd track along the spine of the Inyo mountain range. The salt tram ruins are cool. The fact salt was so valuable at the time that they would build a tram over a mountain is mindblowing.
Descending down long john canyon towards Lone pine is frustrating. It's supposed to be marked by cairns but I think a 6 yr old just came along and stacked rocks randomly, or maybe it was the Burro King. I think this is the part in the thru where my mind starts slipping. I believe that maybe I'm just a simulation. Like Sim City or Roller Coaster Tycoon. There's a game called Thru Hiker Sim and I'm just an avatar getting lost along the route destined to fall in a pool with no ladder. I curse Brett Tucker Player #1.
I make my way out of Long John Canyon after sunset and follow more 4wd roads into Lone Pine. I have been salivating over the thought of pizza for the past 6 hours but Lone Pine is small and closes early. It's 11:30 pm by the time I roll into town. I settle for Pepperoni Hot Pockets from a gas station and check into a motel.
Day 7
I actually sleep in late. It's hard to get out of an actual bed. I feel like if I leave I'll never be comfortable again. I pack up my gear, take another shower and get my Whitney gear out of my trunk. I drive to the visitors center to pick up my Whitney permits. The plan is to take the regular route and bypass the switchbacks with snowshoes as I have read about others doing in an April L2H finish. I return my car to the Chamber of Commerce and begin the walk up to Whitney.
Whitney is imposing in the distance. The mountain gets larger and more formidable with every step. I cant believe I'm so close to the finish. Cars keep stopping asking me if I need a ride to the portal, I say thanks and keep walking soaking in the new alpine environment.
I finally make my way to the portal and run into a couple of guys setting up camp near the store. I ask if they are summiting tomorrow and they tell me the hikers route is completely snowed in and impassable. They say they talked to a couple of people that came down from the regular route and one guy had snapped his snowshoe postholing and in some places the powder was chest high. I'm too close to the finish to turn around now.
I guess I'm doing the goddamn Mountaineers Route.
Day 8
I wake up at 2am and start packing up. I stash my bearcan and snowshoes in a bearbox and start making the trek up the trail. I pass another group making their way up the regular trail in the dark. I take a break at a stream and check Gaia app. The mountaineers route is right in front of me, unmarked.
Bumbling around by the light of my headlamp, the Mountaineers Route isn't actually a trail. It's a lot of scrambling over large rocks and crossing frosty streams whose stepping stones are icy slick in the hours before dawn. I am filled with doubt at this point and am mentally preparing myself for the all too familiar feeling of failure.
The sounds of quick footfalls is approaching behind me. Two guys come rushing up. One of them states, "You're lucky, this was covered in snow 2 weeks ago." they go rushing up the route quickly and with the familiarity of a retiree making his way to the kitchen for a cold brew. These guys know what they are doing.
Fuck HYOH. I'm now hiking their hike.
I do my best to keep up but these guys are moving through the brush and rocks like animals. at points I almost lose them but then catch a glimpse of their headlamps in the distance and head off in that direction. I feel good, I feel my confidence coming back. After climbing 2 other mountain ranges in the past week I'm a little more altitude acquainted and am able to walk 30 feet without sucking air. I finally catch up to my unknowing guides as they are taking a snack break at Lower Boyscout lake. I tell them about the L2H and they tell me that they are just doing Whitney as a quick hike to help train for Denali later in the year. I ask if they mind if I follow them as I don't have a lot of snow experience. Tony and Dane say it's cool as long as I can keep up.
Making our way out of Lower Boyscout Lake the sun is rising and the views are spectacular. I wish I had time to take more photos and video but I'm having trouble keeping up as it is. We pass a beautiful blue icewall near Upper Boysout Lake. The views here are amazing and make the dry desolate desert seem like a faint memory from another life.
We take a break at Iceberg lake. I snack a cliff bar while Tony and Dane consolidate their packs and get their crampons strapped in. I just sit there snacking because all I have is the same micro spikes I've been wearing for the past couple of miles. I look up at the couloir that leads to the notch and then to the summit of Mt Whitney. It's scarier than than the rattler I saw oh so many miles ago. The coulair is a 1500 foot vertical climb in hard packed snow to "The Notch". I can't believe I'm going to attempt this.
Don't look down! don't look down! I keep telling myself this as over and over again I repeat the same ritual up to the notch. Step Step Axe Rest Repeat. For 1500 feet. Dane occasionally shouts down at me "Keep going Josh! You're killing it!" I feel the it I'm killing is myself. I wish I had crampons.
I finally pull myself up to the notch. Tony and Dane are lounging. "You ready to do the traverse?" "Yeah totally ready!" I have no idea what the traverse is.
Dontlookdown dontlookdown. fuck. I looked down. The traverse goes around to the west side of Whitney. One mis step here and you're going on a 2000 foot tumble into Sequoia National Park. The boot pack I'm following is shallow and I'd be shitting my pants if it wasn't for a pucker factor of 11. I wish I had crampons.
Finally making my way around the traverse and begin the walk up to the summit. I feel kind of sick, my vision seems spotty and dim. I am steps away from the end. Everyone is taking pictures at the plaque.
I walk up and slap the monument.No joy. No huge sense of accomplishment.
Just relief.
I take the customary summit photos and have very little time to soak it all in. The cold is making my phone freak out, becoming as responsive as my brain at the moment. The weather is turning for the worse and its time to get off this wild ride. Tony and Dane ask if i can make it down on my own. They have to drive to Mammoth that night and I don't wanna slow them down. I thank them with all the gratitude I can muster. They laugh and say. " I can't believe you did this in running shoes and microspikes! Thanks for letting us be a part of your journey." We head down the mountain and somehow I am able to keep up with them. They give me a ride to Lone Pine and I buy them BBQ and beers because even though I probably would have eventually made it to the top, it was a huge morale booster to tag along with people that knew what the fuck they were doing.
I check into a hotel that night and have the best sleep of my life.
