wada sez: Continuing from “Eyes” and “The Experiment”, this is the concluding part of the “What Lies Beyond The Veil” trilogy. This storyline was inspired by the Sunbow episode “Nightmare Planet”, per Villa: “I cut all the direct references to "Nightmare Planet", like the fact that the Quints are using Daniel's engrams to access to the human collective subconscious. This is why the monster are a bit childish: they represent human children's fears”. The “psitronic proto-matter” of the Pretender shells is an idea shared by “The Call”, which I’ll be serialising for the archive shortly. Italian translation below.

Rodimus Prime’s Corner - Bugly is a deadly warrior with pinpoint maneuverability in the air. Considered Intense, mystical, and very cruel. Practices the deadly martial art of Circuit-Su, which channels energy into one powerful electric blast.

Transformers Warfare: Decepticon Heavy Brigade

A special task force designed to combat the Wreckers, the Decepticon Heavy Brigade was formed by Megatron himself, with all the members sharing the same body type of a heavily armed helicopter. Designed to take hits and repay them a thousand fold, they might have just been the single most terrifying unit within the Decepticon ranks, save for the infamous Justice Division. Fortunately for the Autobots, most of the members are confirmed deceased, having been killed in a suicide attack by the last generation of Wreckers in order to protect a small colony of another race.

Blackout

Blackout is the last living member of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, and not for reasons she's fond of. After joining the Decepticons in an act of desperation and solidarity with her brother, Spaceshot, Blackout quickly realized that despite her massive, war capable frame, she was far from combat ready, being the victim of an almost paralyzing fear when faced with opposition. The only reason she hadn't deserted was because she didn't want to disappoint her brother, and because she had grown legitimately loyal to Megatron and his ideals. This trend continued all the way up until Spaceshot's death. The sight of her brother being killed and the shock of their shared-from-birth spark bond being destroyed completely overrode Blackout's cowardly traits, sending her into a rage that killed off what was left of the Wrecker team that had killed him. Blackout walked away from the fight heavily damaged and near death, but when she recovered, she did so with a newfound appreciation for destruction, a permanently ignited hatred for the Autobots, and an invitation to join Strika's team. Now a member of Team Chaar, she still bears the brigade's symbol on her shoulder, both to honor the fallen, and to show that now, she is the Heavy Brigade.

Blackout, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transforms into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. She is armed with several weapons, including Zander Cannons, Particles Blasters enhanced with Galva Conductors, an Astro Blaster, an X18 Scrapmaker, and a rotorsaw formed from her alt modes' helicopter blades. Additionally, she can stomp down to generate an EMP that is harmless to Cybertronians and Cybertronian adjacent species, but devastating on any electrical equipment.

Spaceshot

Unlike his sister, Spaceshot was a truly courageous soldier, ready and willing to go toe to toe with anybody and anyone for the sake of the Decepticon cause. He spent much of his time trying to instill the same bravery in his sister, often in harsh ways, but he wouldn't succeed. At least, not while he was alive. It was his death that turned her into one of the most feared and loyal Decepticon warriors, an act he wished to be alive to see the day of. Were he still functioning, he'd likely praise her for her new attitude.

Spaceshot, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transformed into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. He was armed with a Corrosive Slime Cannon.

Grindor

Although he shared his name with an idealistic and creative Autobot, this Grindor was nothing like that. Sadistic and cruel, Grindor was the Decepticon Heavy Brigade's strategist and unofficial leader, a tactical rival to the Combaticon leader Onslaught. Able to think on the fly and adapt to any situation, it was a stroke of pure luck that the Wreckers were able to down him. His death is often considered to be the sole reason the Brigade fell in the first place, even by the likes of Megatron himself.

Grindor, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transformed into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. He was armed with an E.D.K. TechVolt.

Venom

Conscripted into the team based on his expertise in psychological warfare, it didn't take long for it to come to light that Venom's only "expertise" was simply studying the subject and then terribly implementing those practices. Despite this, his heavy armor and cluster bombs - plus his enthusiastic approach to using said cluster bombs - made him an excellent soldier prior to his death.

Venom, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transformed into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. As mentioned before, he was armed with cluster bombs.

Bugly

Bugly was a walking paradox. Despite his large size, he was a master of martial artist such as sir-KIT-su, Metallikato, and Tekkaido. And despite the mindset that bots with those types of skills might usually have, Bugly was a bit of a numbskull, enough to have once been conned by Lockdown for double the shanix and upgrades. Thus, it's no surprise that he wound up dead alongside most of his teammates.

Bugly, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transformed into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. He was armed with twin photon rifles and his own skills.

Chopter

Not much is known about Chopter, at least nothing that couldn't be derived from his name. Utterly and brutally insane, Chopter was the type to rush into a battlefield with his blades, leaving nothing but a trail of spilled energon, cut up body parts, and dead Autobots behind him, all while cackling with glee. Unsurprisingly, this meant he was a top priority target on the battlefield, which eventually lead to his deactivation.

Chopter, like all members of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade, transformed into a large, troop carrying Cybertronian helicopter. He was armed with a pair of swords.

wada sez: Bugly was the only one of the six 1988 Decepticon Pretenders who was curiously absent from Furman’s early IDW work, so this storyline serves to give him a role in the universe—something John Barber would later do officially in Revolutionaries issue #7. The Protectobots are all drawn according to their Don Figueroa designs from War Within: The Dark Ages.
