love how buffy's relationship with spike centers buffy, especially in s6-7.

in previous seasons, buffy had to center others - angel, riley, the scoobies, dawn. in her dynamic with others, she had to be the giver and someone others needed. this affected her as a slayer too. slayer buffy had to be self-sacrificial and accommodating.

but with spike, she is herself. she is both the good and the bad parts of her identity. she does not pretend or try hard. and he is the only one who is the giver for her, the only one who accommodates her and the only one who just needs buffy to be buffy.

i'd say it's partially his support that allows slayer buffy to be a leader instead of a sacrificial lamb.

I’d like to disagree, but some of my comfort episodes are Ice and Pusher (The X Files), The Wish (Buffy), Yesterday’s Enterprise (ST:TNG), and There But For The Grace of God (SG1).

RANT: Sometimes I wonder if people watched the same show as me! I've just seen a post on FB where they said that, ultimately, they think Buffy felt the same way about Spike as she did Xander and when she said goodbye to him all she could manage was to look at him with sad eyes and hold his hand for a few seconds.

WTF?! I guess I imagined the hands on fire and souls connecting gaze then (which she'd NEVER have with Xander!)

OMFG. still on my season 6 rewatch, xander gets buffy a job at his contruction site, but the trio send demons after her, so obvi she protects herself and her coworkers, but chaos and destruction ensues, and now xander is yelling at buffy and telling her, "no, not here, not at my job. that's your job." AS IF BUFFY HAS ANY CONTROL OVER WHERE DEMONS APPEAR TO ATTACK HER IN THE FUKCING HELLMOUTH.

actually, watching 911 got me thinking that being a firefighter would actually be a really good career for buffy post-chosen. it's a job where she gets to use her superpowers to help people, but is still removed from the trauma of slaying. she could still be a slayer part-time, and get called in for any particularly threatening apocalypses, but in the meantime she can help people without having to kill or do violence, and i think that would be really healthy for her.
