World's Greatest Uncle (AO3)
"Come meet your niece," Chimney says softly as he opens the door, gesturing to Maddie in the living room holding their daughter to her chest as she stares at her affectionately.
Maddie looks up when she hears the door shut, a little jumpy, like she hadn't noticed anyone else there. Buck stands behind Maddie, his hand on her shoulder as he gazes at his niece.
She's so tiny. Her eyes are a familiar shade of dark brown, already having a lot of hair despite being a newborn. She stares up at Maddie and Buck adoringly, like she's trying to figure out just what she's looking at. She reaches a tiny hand up, touching Buck's face.
"She likes you," Maddie says.
"You think?"
"Definitely." Maddie pauses for a second, looking between Buck and the baby as Chimney approaches them, kissing Maddie's forehead lightly. "Do you want to hold her?"
Buck freezes. It's not like he hasn't held a baby before, but this child is Maddie's. His niece. His own flesh and blood. He looks at Maddie, staring into her eyes, thinking about how no one has ever put this much trust in him before. Maddie gives him a shy smile, understanding perfectly the message he's conveying.
"Are you sure?"
"There's no one we trust in this world more than you," Chimney pipes up.
Buck nods, and Maddie shifts the baby around in her arms, gently handing her over to Buck.
He takes her, supporting her head with his left hand, his thumb gently brushing against her tiny cheek. She grins at her uncle, and Buck is struck again by just how much she looks like her mother, even at this age.
"She looks just like you," he whispers as she shuts her eyes, her mouth opening a little.
"Really?" Maddie asks, her excitement thinly veiled by a tone of nonchalance. "Let's go to the nursery, I wanna put her down soon."
Maddie leads him into the baby's room, Buck slowly following. There's a bit of fear in the way he carries her with him, like she's made of glass and he could drop her at any moment.
Maddie watches him silently, her eyes narrowing as if she has an idea. "Would you like a minute with her?" She tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear, looking up at him questioningly.
"You would do that?"
"Of course. Mostly because I have to pee... but..." She trails off.
Buck chuckles and waves dismissively at her as she leaves the room, shutting the door behind her.
He sits down on the rocking chair next to the crib with his niece in his arms, still mesmerized by her.
He's so proud of his sister; after everything she's been through, with their parents and her deceased husband, she's still able to produce the most perfect baby in the world. Well, her and Chimney.
Her eyes open again, and she lets out a few small cries. Buck looks around, bewildered, but then remembers he's alone. She whimpers again, and Buck gets an idea.
"Hey, little one. Don't worry, I got you," he whispers. "You're very lucky, you know. Having Maddie as a mom. It's funny, she's not my mother but she's been more of a parent to me than my own. She raised me. You're very lucky to have Chimney too; when he does something, he puts his whole heart into it. That's what Hen said."
She falls quiet when he talks to her, and they begin to shut, but Buck keeps talking, it benefiting her as much as it is him.
"I'm so proud of her, your mom. She's been through some things, things she'll probably tell you about when you're older, but she's still able to come out on top, doing what she does best."
Buck stands up and begins to pace around the room with her in his arms. "You're going to be loved by so many people. Your parents, me, and all our friends. You're going to have a much better childhood than me and Maddie ever did, but never feel guilty, because I know for a fact that if she had to go through everything she has before to have you, she would in a heartbeat. And so would I."
He hears the click of a camera behind him, and he turns around to see Maddie standing at the door, holding her phone and looking at him with tears in her eyes but an evil smile on her face. He hands the baby over to her, and she sets her down in the crib silently, then throws her arms around her brother, thanking him.
"You're really proud of me?" She asks.
"How long were you standing there?"
She rolls her eyes and puts her hands on her hips, giving him a mock glare. "Shut up and answer the question."
"Of course I'm proud of you."
"I never thought I'd be here," she admits, breaking eye contact with him, fidgeting with her hands as she stares at the ground sheepishly. "With Doug, it was never safe enough to bring a child into this world. I went to unhealthy lengths to make sure I didn't. Sometimes I wonder if I deserve any of this."
"You deserve all of this, Maddie," he says. "You deserve Chimney, you deserve this baby girl. Don't ever think that you don't, especially if it's because of Doug." A crush if anger courses through his veins as he says his name. It feels like a bad word, it feels dirty to say. If anyone understands that, it's Maddie.
"Thank you," she says genuinely. "Thank you for everything you said to her."
"You don't need to thank me, it's all true."
Maddie leans over the crib with Buck, her hands gripping the bars tightly. Buck mimics the movement, gazing at his niece and wondering if maybe one day he would have this. If not, he's perfectly content to watch this little girl grow up.
"I get the sense you'll be fiercely protective of her," Maddie says, breaking the silence.
"Definitely."
"Howie's already making a list of ways to terrorize her future boyfriends, so you'll have to stand in line."
"I'm okay with that," he replies.
They stand there, gazing at her for what feels like hours, but never seeming to get bored. Maddie leans on his shoulder and Buck drapes an arm around his sister, the wholesomeness of this moment overwhelming him.
One week later...
Buck frowns when he hears his doorbell ring, wondering who could be at the door.
He opens the door to see no one there, and when he steps outside his apartment, his foot hits something hard, causing him to look down at the ground.
There's a box on the floor. It's wrapped with a sparkly blue paper and tied with a red bow. He bends over to pick it up, searching for the tag.
To: Uncle Buck
There's no "from" on the tag, but Buck has a hunch he knows exactly who sent this to him.
Closing the door, he strategically unties the bow, growing impatient after he does, so he rips off the paper to find a cardboard box.
He lifts the lid of the cardboard box to see a black picture frame, the words "World's Greatest Uncle" written in thick white cursive at the bottom.
He lifts the frame out of the box, gazing at the photo.
It must have been the one Maddie took the week before, when he didn't realize she was there. It's a side view of Buck, but the best part is the baby in his arms, the one he's smiling dopily at.
He traces the words at the bottom with his index finger, mouthing them as he does.
He looks back up at the photo, brushing his niece's forehead with his thumb.
"Thanks, little one."

Parents Come in Many Forms
Day 7 of the Buckley siblings appreciation week
Fandom: 9-1-1 Pairing: Buddie (Buck/Eddie) Word Count: 2,097 Summary:  Maddie and Chim have a very important question to ask Buck and Eddie.

Tumblr media
Buck knocked on the door to Maddie and Chim’s place, fiddling nervously with the hem of his coat.  Maddie had called and asked him to come over, and she’d sounded unusually serious, though she’d brushed it off when he’d inquired as to her tone.  Buck was worried that something was wrong with the baby and Maddie had wanted to tell him in person, but he tried to convince himself that he was worrying about nothing, overthinking as always.
“Buck, hey,” Chim opened the door and greeted him with a smile, his expression neutral.  “Come on in.”
“Hey Chim,” Buck replied, following him into the house as Chim closed the door behind him.  “What’s going on?  Is anything wrong?”
“No, why?” asked Chim, watching Buck shrug out of his coat and hang it near the door.
“I dunno, just something about the way Maddie asked me to come over, I was worried something was wrong,” Buck said, unsure, but Chim shook his head.
“Everything’s fine.  Come on, Maddie’s in the kitchen.”
Buck felt some of his worry slip away but he couldn’t banish all of it as he followed Chim, eyes flickering around as though he was looking for something out of place or out of the ordinary.  Maybe nothing was wrong, but something felt off; there was an air of anticipation in the apartment and Buck wondered if it was just because of the baby, or something else.
“Eddie?  What are you doing here?”  Buck asked, coming to a halt in the doorway in complete surprise to see Eddie already standing in the kitchen, talking to Maddie.  Eddie looked up and smiled, moving over to greet Buck.
“Hey,” Eddie said, wrapping his arms briefly around Buck and giving him a quick kiss, which Buck returned, but distractedly, looking at Maddie over Eddie’s shoulder and then turning to look at his boyfriend.
“Hi,” Buck said, nonplussed.  “What are you doing here?” he repeated, as Eddie tugged him into the room and over to the kitchen island, where Maddie was standing.
“I asked Eddie to come over too,” Maddie said, smiling as she moved closer to Buck, waddling a little and supporting her belly.
“She has something important to ask you and she wanted me to be here too,” Eddie explained, which did nothing to help Buck’s confusion.
“Something important to ask me?” Buck asked, reaching out and gently touching Maddie’s belly, something he’d made a habit of doing ever since Maddie told him it was okay.  “Hi Mango,” Buck said softly, more to himself than Maddie’s actual belly, but Maddie smiled, and when Buck glanced at Eddie, Buck saw he was smiling too.
“What?” Buck asked, glancing at them both and then over at Chim, still confused.  “You guys are starting to worry me, what’s going on?”
“I promise it’s nothing bad,” Eddie said quickly, clearly wanting to chase away his anxiety.
“It’s not,” Maddie agreed.  “Actually, it’s wonderful.”
“Here, Buckaroo,” Chim said, and as he joined Maddie and stood at her side, he held out an envelope for Buck.
Buck reached for the envelope and took it, his brow still furrowed as his eyes traced the writing on the front;  both his and Eddie’s names in flowery script adorned the envelope, written in shiny, golden ink.
“This is for you, too?” Buck asked, looking over at Eddie, who was watching him.
“Yeah, but mostly for you,” Eddie replied, threading an arm behind Buck’s back and squeezing his hip.  “Open it.”
Buck was even more confused now because he couldn’t think of anything that Maddie and Chim would be giving the pair of them, but his curiosity was killing him so he slid his finger under the flap of the envelope, careful not to rip it; it was made of thick, gorgeous cardstock and Buck didn’t want to ruin it.   He pulled out a card and set the envelope down on the counter, flipping the card over to the front.  There was a beautiful water colour picture of a small group of houses, surrounded by gorgeous trees and flowers and in the background, a sunset set the sky to shimmer in shades of pink and purple.   There were golden words that matched the colour of his and Eddie’s names on the envelope, and they read:
They say it takes a village to raise a child.
Buck smiled a little and opened the card, still not really sure what to expect.  On the inside, there was a small photograph attached, and Buck recognized it as Maddie’s latest sonograph image.  It very clearly showed an outline of their baby, and Buck felt a sensation of awe as he looked at it, just as he had when Maddie had shown him a few weeks prior.
Underneath was a longer message, written in Maddie’s neat cursive in the same gold ink:
Growing up will be so rad,             The excitement never ends.             And I know that my Mom and Dad              Will always be my friends.
But sometimes two is not enough             And that’s where you come in,             Especially when times get rough             And my world begins to spin.
My mom says that you’re the best             And Dad has to agree             That if we put you to the test             You’d be the ones for me
So will you be the ones to hold                        Me when I’m down and out,             But also join in when I’m bold             And scream and laugh and shout?
‘Cause parents come in many forms             On that we all agree             Together we can weather storms             Will you please be there for me?
Buck and Eddie - will you be the godparents to our little Baby Mango?
Buck stared at the words, his hands shaking slightly as he tried to absorb what he’d read.  The poem was beyond cute, and he’d just been enjoying it until its message had started to sink in.  His lips had parted, and he could feel his chest constricting as the enormity of what they were asking set in.  He was shocked, flattered, excited and terrified by the prospect, and his eyes filled with tears as he quickly re-read the poem, aware that everyone was watching him and waiting for him to react.
He finally looked up and met Maddie’s eyes, which were also full of tears as she watched him.  He opened his mouth to speak but found he couldn’t, so he pulled away from Eddie, crossed the few feet between him and Maddie and wrapped his arms around her.  Maddie gave a watery laugh and hugged him back, and they stood like that for several long moments as Buck attempted to pull himself together, feeling a few tears slip down his cheek into Maddie’s hair.
Eventually he pulled away, moving back a couple of steps and right into Eddie’s waiting arms.  Buck turned and hugged him as well, hardly daring to believe that this was actually happening.  He could of course understand why Maddie and Chim would trust Eddie with their baby’s future, since he was such an amazing Dad to Christopher, but he couldn’t put into words how stunned and touched he was that they had decided to trust him as well.
Buck pulled away just enough to look at Eddie, who smiled up at him and reached up to wipe away Buck’s tears.  Buck sniffed and then turned back to Maddie and Chim, his eyes red but a smile blooming across his face as he looked at them, looked at the way Maddie cradled her belly, the way Chim held Maddie close and was looking at Buck in a warm way that he’d never seen before.
“So I take it that’s a yes?” Chim asked, and Buck realized he still hadn’t spoken as he’d been so overwhelmed with emotion.
“Yes, of course,” Buck responded immediately, glancing at Eddie, who nodded, and Buck noticed he looked very touched as well, his eyes glistening as he held Buck to his side.  “We would be honoured.”
Maddie and Chim made noises of happiness and descended on the two of them.  Buck was briefly lost in an eight-armed hug, and he tried to make sure he was touching everyone as they all embraced, laughing as they pulled apart.  Eddie stood closely behind him and to the side, arms around his waist as they all smiled at each other.
“Are you guys sure, though?” Buck asked after a moment as Maddie leaned back against the counter, his insecurity suddenly hitting him once more.  “I mean, I’m kind of a disaster.”
Buck ignored Eddie’s scolding scoff and the way he squeezed Buck’s hip in protest to his words as Maddie laughed.
“Buck, you’re only a disaster to yourself.  We have no doubts that you’d be an amazing father if anything ever happened to us.  You already are a wonderful father to Christopher,” Maddie pointed out, and he felt Eddie nodding behind him.
“It’s true,” Eddie said, and Buck shivered as Eddie’s breath tickled his neck.  “You’ve done so much for Christopher in such a short time, it never fails to amaze me.”
Buck felt his cheeks flushing at the compliments and shook his head slightly, suddenly feeling bashful.   He glanced over at Chim, who was leaning in to nuzzle Maddie and kiss her cheek, his hand slipping over her belly.
“You sure you’re okay with this, Chim?” Buck asked, and Chim looked up, his usual smirk gone as he regarded Buck.
“I mean, the poem says I am, so I must be,” Chim joked, and Buck smiled, but waited, wanting a real answer.  “Okay, look.  If you’d told me five years ago that I’d be making you godparent of my baby, I’d have said you were crazy.  Partially because I thought I was getting too old to even be having a baby by the time I got into a relationship, and partly because Buck 1.0 was a little... wild.”
Buck ducked his head, letting out a breath of laughter as Maddie looked over at Chim, frowning.  But Chim wasn’t wrong; the Buck that had started at the 118 years ago would never have known what to do with a kid if he’d suddenly found one in his care, and Buck was not offended by the comment.
“But you’ve changed and grown so much since then.  You know I don’t usually get all mushy about things, but…”  Chim paused, like he wasn’t exactly sure what to say, and then he smiled.  “I’m proud of you, Buck.  And I am absolutely okay with this.”
Buck felt his face get warmer once more as he acknowledged Chimney’s words, reaching out as Chim offered his hand.  They clasped hands and Buck pulled Chim in for a hug, feeling weepy again as they patted each other on the back and then broke apart.
“Who wants champagne?”  Eddie asked a moment later, holding up a bottle.  Chim and Buck both immediately agreed, Maddie pretending to be put out as she watched Chim gathering glasses.
“I brought sparkling fruit cider for you,” Eddie smiled, showing Maddie the bottle, and she grinned at him.
“I knew Buck loved you for a reason,” Maddie laughed, taking the bottle from him and passing it to Chim so he could pour her a glass.  “So thoughtful.”
“Yes he is,” Buck agreed, turning back to Eddie leaning down, pressing a kiss to his lips.  Buck leaned on Eddie as Chim filled their glasses and handed them out, and then Maddie held up her glass to toast.
“To the official godparents of our little Mango,” Maddie said, raising her glass.
“Here here!” said Chim, as Buck and Eddie both beamed.  They all clinked their glasses together and drank, the energy in the room one of joyful celebration.
“Oh!  Mango is celebrating too!” Maddie gasped after a moment, smiling.  Maddie gestured for them to come closer and both Eddie and Buck put a hand gently on her baby bump.  A moment later, Buck felt a few small kicks and he couldn’t stop a gasp from escaping as Eddie smiled, both at the feeling of the baby kicking and at Buck’s response.
“I can’t wait to meet her,” Buck said softly, and Maddie nodded, taking his hand and squeezing it.  They looked at each other and Buck smiled, knowing what they were both thinking, and their hands slipped into a pinky promise position without conscious thought.  Between the four of them, as well as the rest of the family they’d chosen, he knew that his niece would never spend a single moment thinking she was anything but loved.  They would all make sure of that.

           “You’re early.”
Maddie smiled as she stepped past Buck in the doorway to his apartment, a bottle of wine in one hand and several board games balanced precariously on the other.  He closed the door behind her and followed her into the kitchen, taking the boxes from her before she dropped them.
“Traffic was lighter than I expected,” Maddie offered by way of explanation.  “And I didn’t really want to be alone for too long after the day I had at work.”
Buck frowned, reaching for a wine glass in the cupboard over the sink and setting it down on the counter.  Maddie had already located his corkscrew and was halfway to opening the wine bottle by the time he propped himself against the counter to watch her.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Maddie shook her head, pouring a generous helping of wine into the glass and taking a long sip.
“It’s nothing, honestly.  I’ll forget all about it soon enough, I’m sure.”
Buck looked like he might push further, but he knew Maddie well enough to know that she wasn’t going to say anything else and so he dropped it.
“Well if you’re okay to keep yourself amused for a bit, I’m going to go get changed before the others get here.”
Maddie nodded, tipping her glass in his direction as she moved toward the table to look through the stack of games.  Buck watched her for a minute before pushing himself away from the counter and heading for the stairs up to his loft.  Eddie and Chim were due to join them in the next twenty minutes or so and he didn’t want to still be in his loungewear when they arrived.
As Buck disappeared, Maddie perused the board games.  Buck had set out a deck of cards, too, as well as a couple more games that he usually kept at his place between game nights.  She took another sip of wine and felt her head swim a little.  The fuzziness reminded her that it’d been hours since she’d last eaten and she was starving.
“What did you order for dinner?”  She called up the stairs.
           Buck peeked around the corner.
“I haven’t ordered yet, but I figured pizza’s probably the easiest if we’re playing games,” he replied.  “My phone’s on the counter, you can put in an order if you want.”
           Maddie hummed in acknowledgment.
“Are you in the mood for any kind of pizza in particular?”
“No olives, no anchovies!”  Buck called from somewhere in the vicinity of his closet.
Maddie smiled at how predictable his answers were and she set her glass down, pushing away from the table and heading over to the counter near the sink to grab Buck’s phone.  Punching in his pass code, she gasped as the screen unlocked to show a nude photo.  She fumbled the phone, concerned that it might’ve been a picture Buck had taken of himself, but the man in the picture - though she couldn’t see his face - didn’t look anything like Buck.  His frame was different, and while she liked what she saw, she had to wonder why Buck had racy pictures of another man open on his phone.  She’d known for a long time that he was bisexual, but he didn’t seem the type to keep pornography on his phone.  Though, she thought, it would explain why he seemed a bit spooked to see her when she’d shown up early.  She grimaced, feeling a little bad for potentially having interrupted him in the middle of… something.
Shrugging, Maddie went to close the photo app.  Instead of hitting the home button, however, her thumb clumsily swiped over the screen flipping back a picture or two.  It was a picture of Eddie, smiling, biting his lip, shirtless.  It was cute, but a sudden realization hit her like a ton of bricks and this time, Maddie dropped the phone in earnest.
           “Is everything okay?”
Maddie jumped as Buck’s voice startled her from just a couple of feet away.  She spun around and nodded, trying to plaster a nonchalant grin onto her face and failing miserably.  Buck frowned as he noticed her discomposure and moved closer to her.  She could feel the heat burning in her cheeks.
           “Did you order?”  Buck asked.
           Maddie shook her head.
“I-I was just going to use my phone, instead,” she said hurriedly.  “You ordered last time, so it should be my turn.”
Buck chuckled, reaching around her for his phone.
“Chim ordered last time,” he reasoned.  “Which brings it back to me.”
Buck thumbed the home button, watching his screen flicker to life as the phone unlocked.  It took less than half a second for him to realize why Maddie was suddenly acting so strangely.  Feeling like he’d been punched in the gut, he hurriedly closed his phone again, his cheek twitching as he averted his gaze.
“Oh shit, you weren’t supposed to see that,” he murmured, his face turning pink.  “I can explain.”
Maddie shook her head, dispeling enough of her surprise to get her head back in the game.  She reached out to gently touch Buck’s arm, smiling softly.
“You don’t have to explain anything,” she assured him.
Buck fidgeted, running a hand over the back of his head as he smiled wryly.
“Is it weird that I kind of want to, though?”
Maddie wasn’t sure how to answer him, but he seemed encouraged by her silence as he continued on.
“It’s all brand new,” he said in a rush.  “I mean, not the being into other guys, but the thing with Eddie.  I don’t even know if we’d call it official yet.  We’re just having fun.”
“I think it’s more than that,” Maddie said softly.  “And I think you’ve known that for a long time.”
Buck shrugged, finally turning to look at Maddie.  Though he stood nearly a foot taller, he looked small and vulnerable as he gazed at her from underneath his downy eyelashes.  Unable to find the right words of reassurance for him, Maddie stepped into his space instead, wrapping her arms around him.
           “You seem happy,” she offered.
Buck nodded, returning the embrace, holding onto her for a moment before letting go to step back.
           “I think I am.”
Maddie laughed and playfully swatted him on the shoulder.
“I don’t blame you,” she teased.  “That’s a beautiful man you’ve got there.”
Buck’s blush darkened at her words and he made a small, choked noise.
“Please don’t tell Eddie you saw those,” Buck said awkwardly.  “But yeah, I do, don’t I?”
Maddie chuckled, giving Buck a teasing wink as he opened his phone again, minimizing the photo app as he pulled up a delivery app instead.  Punching in the order for pizza, Buck slipped his phone into his pocket just in time to hear a knock on the door.  Maddie beat him to answering and a loud chorus of hellos erupted as Chim and Eddie walked in, carrying beer and snacks.
Buck hung back by the table as the three of them exchanged greetings, smiling at Eddie as Maddie gave the other man a quick hug before descending on Chim instead.  Buck watched Eddie walk over, taking the two six packs of beer from his hands and stowing them in the fridge, grabbing a bottle for each of them.
“So you told her, then?”  Eddie asked quietly.
Buck froze halfway out of the fridge, rising slowly and glancing over at Eddie, chewing his lip.
           “What makes you say that?”
Eddie nudged the fridge door closed as Buck set the bottles on the counter and reached for the bottle opener.
“I grew up in a house full of women, I can tell when something’s up,” Eddie said with a shrug.
Buck’s heart clenched anxiously at Eddie’s realization.  He was worried Eddie would be upset, but the other man’s neutral expression, while not reassuring, was also not too worrisome.  Buck nodded.
“It just kind of came out,” Buck explained.  “I didn’t mean for it to, it just sort of… happened.”
Eddie chuckled softly, reaching to take the bottle opener from Buck’s nervous hands.  He made quick work of uncapping the beers, setting the opener aside and picking up a bottle.  He took a quick sip, flashing Buck a smile.
“It’s okay, Buck,” Eddie assured him.  “I don’t care that you told her.”
           Buck grimaced a little.
“Even if we’re not official yet?”
Eddie frowned, setting his beer back down on the counter.  He could practically feel the anxiety rolling off Buck in waves.  Closing the distance between them, Eddie reached up to take Buck’s face in his hands.  Buck barely had time to close his eyes before Eddie’s lips were on his and Eddie smiled into the kiss as Buck sucked in a breath.
Buck practically melted into Eddie after a moment of stiffness.  Soft, pliant, and oh so responsive.  Eddie slipped one hand down to Buck’s hip, stilling him, holding him in place as the world spun around them.  He could feel Buck’s heartbeat against his ribs where the two of them were pressed together, and he slowly pulled away to give Buck a chance to catch his breath.  Opening his eyes, Eddie found Buck looking at him, too.
“Is that official enough for you?”  Eddie asked.
Buck barked out a laugh, nodding.
If either of them noticed the shocked expression on Chim’s face or Maddie’s delighted giggling, they didn’t say a word.

Wait until the morning light (we'll all be alright) [On AO3]
Written for Buckley Siblings Week Day One: “I need you.” “I’m on my way.” + hurt
.
Maddie held her daughter close to her chest and resisted the urge to cry.
Her head was killing her, her whole body ached, and her daughter would not stop screaming.
Maddie had quite literally tried everything.
"Shh, baby,  I know, I know; you're tired. I'm tired, too, but we need to stick together, right, Rosie?" She bounced the three month old up and down gently, making sure not to move her too much.
She didn't stop screaming.
Chimney was at work, and he still had about eight hours until his shift ended, so she couldn't call him. That just left her with Buck, who was at home, recovering from a pretty serious concussion he'd suffered on the job a few days ago, so, even though she was desperate, she couldn't call him.
"Alright, baby, you and mommy and going to sleep now, okay?"
They did. For one blissful hour, after she'd fed her daughter, they'd both slept. When she woke up, the full body ache was somehow worse, and not a second later, her daughter woke up with a piercing cry.
And Madddie caved.
Her brother picked up on the second ring. "Buck."
"Mads? Maddie, what's going on?"
"Can you come over? I need you."
"I’m on my way," was his immediate answer.
He got there in fifteen minutes, and when she opened the door, his eyes widened. She didn't blame him.
They must make quite the sight. Maddie's hair was a mess, her shirt was stained and her eyes must be red from the crying. Rosie was whimpering into her chest, and Maddie just knew, any second now, she would start up the crying again.
Buck pulled her into a hug, and she leaned her weight on him, and allowed her eyes to close for a few seconds.
"Jesus Maddie, you're sick?"
She pulled away and frowned. "No, I'm just tired."
"You have a fever," he retorted. He gently took his niece from her arms, and, miraculously, she didn't protest too much and definitely didn't start crying. In fact, she seemed to actually settle in his arms.
Tears pricked her eyes again, and her lips trembled. "I'm a horrible mother," she cried, watching her brother soothe her daughter in a way she hadn't been able to today.
Buck stared at her incredulously. "You're not serious," he told her flatly.
She shook her head and let the tears fall. "I can't do anything right! Buck, I'm a failure."
Buck pulled her by the arm to the couch and sat her down. "You're tired and you're sick. What you're not, is a bad mother, Maddie."
"I am," she hissed quietly. "Look at her! She's about to fall asleep in your arms, Buck. Minutes after you got here. I only managed to put her down for an hour, and even then, she woke up crying. I'm-"
She was pulled back into his arms, and he let her cry into his chest without saying anything. When she pulled away, he looked her dead in the eye.
"You're sick, and exhausted, and she could probably sense that. The more upset you were, the more upset she was too. I know you know this, Maddie." She nodded reluctantly and wiped her eyes. "She's a really happy baby, but she's still a baby. And babies cry. You're not a failure because your baby cried."
Tears sprung into her eyes at his words, and for once today, they weren't sad tears.
"And hey! You practically raised me, and I turned out okay, right?"
"You turned out amazing," she hastened to tell him. "But I'm not sure how much I had to do with that."
"A lot," he told her firmly, and silence her with a look when she opened her mouth to protest. "Now, I need you to go take a shower, or at least change, because you stink-" she punched him in the arm. "-eat, and take some Tylenol, okay? Take as long as you need, we'll be right here."
The knot in her chest loosened. "You sure?"
"Absolutely." He made himself comfortable, and the sight of her daughter snuggled up on his chest, both of them looking content as ever, made her smile.
She did as she was told and when she emerged from her bedroom, feeling better already, they were in the same position she left them, though Buck was now on his phone.
She made to sit beside him but he put his hand on her back and pushed forward. "Food," he told her when she glared at him.
"I'm not hungry," she whined.
"Too bad. Now go," he pointed at the kitchen.
"Don't make a habit out of this attitude, little brother."
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah."
.
"Thank you," she whispered to him as she curled up into him. "For being here when we needed you. I know you're still tired."
"I'll always be here for you two, Maddie." Her head dropped onto his shoulder, and she sighed. She put a hand on her daughter's back and stroked it.
"You're gonna make a great dad someday."
"I don't know about that."
"I do," she told him confidently. "I see the way you are with Rosie, with Christopher. I see how Nia, Denny and Harry seem to adore you. You'll be an amazing dad."
She heard a sniffle, then he pressed a kiss to her head. "Thank you for saying that."
"I mean it," she insisted.
"I know."
.
She didn't know when it happened, but she managed to drift off into a restful sleep and only woke up when Howie shook her awake. "Hi," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her head. "Heard you weren't feeling well?"
"Buck told you?"
He cracked a smile. "Buck told me. Why didn't you say anything?"
She shrugged. "I honestly didn't notice I was sick. I just thought I was tired."
He opened his arms and she fell into his embrace, happy to be in his arms after the day she'd had. "Hey, look at this," he whispered, unlocking his phone. She sat up beside him. He opened the gallery and clicked on the last picture.
Maddie grinned and took a closer look. Buck was holding both her and Rosie. Her daughter seemed so small sleeping peacefully against his chest as his hand covered her entire back. Maddie herself was holding onto his arm, while his face was buried in her hair.
Her chest hurt with all the love she held for her family. She leaned back into Chimney's chest and closed her eyes. "Let's sleep a little more."
He leaned back against the couch and made them both comfortable, and his arms tightening around her.
Soon enough, they were both asleep.
.
Maddie tried to lift her daughter out of Buck's arms gently, but the minute she was gone from his arms, Buck jolted awake. "Wha- Hey, Mads, what's going on?"
"Nothing, go back to sleep."
"Rosie?" He muttered sleepily.
"I'm gonna put her in her crib, alright?"
He nodded and sat up.
When she was back, he was trying to put on his jacket, but was failing. She bit back an amused smile and hurried over to him to help him put it on. "How are you going to go home?"
"Called an uber."
"Are you sure you don't want to stay?"
"Your couch is tiny," he teased.
She rolled her eyes. "It's a normal size. You're just a giant."
He rolled his eyes. "Whatever. You're just bitter." He opened her door. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Buck, you don't have to-" he silenced her protest with a look and she smiled, and put a hand on his arm. "Thank you," she mumbled.
"You don't have to thank me, Mads."
"Yes, I do," she argued. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Buck."
He pulled her into a warm hug. "Well, lucky for you; you'll never have to find out."

Day 2 - “You’re kind of my favourite person, you know that?” + childhood
Read on AO3
.
The walkie talkie on the bed next to her comes alive with static, the serious voice of her baby brother noisily blasting through from its counterpart in the backyard.
“Testing 1, 2, 3, Testing. This is Evan, come in for Maddie. Testing.”
Maddie stifles a laugh, a smile lifting the corners of her lips as she puts down the notes she had been studying for English Lit, and picks up the receiving end.
“Copy. This is Maddie. Go for Evan.” She pulls back the curtain of her bedroom window behind her, peaking down at the yard below.
Evan had been counting down the days until it was warm enough that he was able to camp outside for the night, eager to finally put his cherished Christmas presents to good use; a tent, from his parents, and a set of walkie talkies from his sister. One for him and one for her. They would keep the pair connected, she said. A way for Evan to reach out anytime he felt he needed to. Maddie was always his biggest protector, never more than a pinky promise away.
Evan pops his head out from the poorly pitched tent, the shadowed form of the excited 9-year-old slightly illuminated by the moons light, as he eagerly waves his hand up at her when he notices her watching, a huge smile brandishing his face.
“Mads, you gotta come check it out! I have all the best stuff in here. The laser I got for my birthday last year, and some snacks, and I even brought the portable boombox, although dad already yelled at me to keep it down. Over.”
Maddie sighs. She would love nothing more than to join her little brother in the yard for a bit, laying under the stars in the fresh spring weather, gazing up and reveling in the memory of a time not so complicated. When she and Daniel had done something similarly beautiful. Back before it had all changed. But mid-terms are in two days, and if she doesn’t ace this exam, she doesn’t think she will make honor roll, the one thing her parents seem to take pride in. The one thing that lets her know they still somewhat care, however little that may be.
“Got any good music? Over.” She opts for a buffer instead of a decline, continuing to look down at him from the window as she talks. She hates seeing the disappointed look on his face, especially when it is aimed at her.
“Yea! I have Linkin Park, and Green Day, and Smash Mouth!” Maddie rolls her eyes. Those bands are definitely too mature for a nine year old, but Maddie has to give him credit. He has good taste.
“Listen bud,” she pauses, dreading turning him down, the static from the dead air of the walkie talkie filling her bedroom. “I have a ton of work to do for school tonight. Maybe let me see how far I can get and then I’ll try and come down for a bit. Okay?”
There’s silence from the other end, Maddie wondering if he didn’t hear her. “Over,” she adds, making sure he knows she is finished. “Evan?”
“Okay.” He looks up at her, the excitement from just a second ago since deflated. “Over and out,” and he is gone, once again hidden back inside the lone tent.
It isn’t even ten minutes later when Maddie swipes her notebook shut, tossing it on the floor beside her and gathers up a pillow, a few blankets, and an extra layer of sweatpants, quietly climbing down the stairs and making her way out the back door. The trek along the grass is uncoordinated, and she unskillfully fumbles with the tents zipper upon arrival, trying her best to balance the stuff in her hands and not let it hit the ground below. A small hand finishes the job, allowing her full access to the surprisingly roomy tent as she plops down out of breath.
“I thought you had to study? ”Evan’s shocked expression appears into view, just visible from behind the mountain of belongings she had brought with her to keep warm for the night.
“Eh…. I studied enough. The rest can wait. I know how long you’ve been dying to try this whole camping thing, and I suddenly realized there isn’t anywhere else I’d rather be than hanging out with my knuckle headed little brother. Now scooch over so there’s room.”
“Really?” The look on his face is enough to melt her heart, as he slides his sleeping bag to the right so she can make a space for herself.
“Really.” She nudges his arm with her elbow. “You’re kind of my favorite person, you know that?”
Evan contemplates the words for a second, nodding and giving her a nudge back. “I know.”
The laugh they share echos throughout the yard, hopefully not loud enough to wake up their sleeping parents who had warned Evan not to be too loud or he wouldn’t be allowed to do this again.
The pair get cozy, settling in and situating themselves just right. “Now, play me some of this inappropriate music you’ve been listening to,” to which Evan rolls his eyes at her. “And pass the chips. I’m starving.”
Honor roll and her parents be damned. Maddie was way more interested in pleasing her favorite person anyway.
