When Megan Rapinoe met Ada Hegerberg: ‘Euro 2022? Everyone was late to the party’
The Ballon d’Or winners come together to discuss England’s Euros triumph, next year’s World Cup and their teams’ sorority
Tumblr media
It’s been three years since Olympique Lyonnais acquired a majority stake in Seattle-based NWSL club Reign FC, forging an international sisterhood between women’s clubs unlike any model in professional sports.
The partnership has brought some of the world’s best known players into the same organizational stable, including Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg (who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018) and OL Reign’s Megan Rapinoe (who claimed the trophy in 2019). Ahead of their clubs’ joint US tour, Rapinoe and Hegerberg sat down for an exclusive conversation with the Guardian to discuss their teams’ unique sorority, their impressions of England’s epochal Euro 2022 triumph and their hopes for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
What were your thoughts on Euro 2022 and how it seemed to penetrate English culture, not unlike the 1999 World Cup in the United States?
Megan Rapinoe: My overarching feeling was like, everyone’s late to the party. This is not surprising to me at all. I feel like I’ve known that the level of play was going to be that [high]. I knew that the European teams, especially in the last five years with the rise of the club game, have been sensational. Of course this was going to be how it was going to go. We literally grow gardens out of cement every single time. Tell me one women’s tournament in the last 15 years that hasn’t exceeded expectations. Part of it is like: “Welcome, everybody, to the party. You’re extremely fucking late, but fine.” And I feel proud about that. Ada should feel the same and all the women’s players should feel the same because we did this. We did this. We put this into motion through literally sheer will, while also being the best players in the world.
The way that the English players held themselves in this tournament, they just embraced the moment fully and didn’t fall into the narrative or didn’t allow themselves to be stressed out about it. You could just tell they stepped into themselves. And it’s yet another data point, justification, reason, a clear picture of why investing in women’s football is good business, first and foremost. It’s a proper money-making opportunity.
So I feel so many different emotions. Just being as old as I am, it’s hard not to be jaded by some of this stuff, but progress moves at the speed that it does and I think being able to build on this is huge. And I’m just hoping that all of the main stakeholders can really take a look in the mirror and understand that it’s been them that’s been holding the game back, it’s not been us. I feel incredibly proud. I think all of the supporters should feel incredibly proud. I think this is a total watershed moment, this whole year, going from Champions League to what Barcelona did [setting multiple world attendance records].
While the US women’s national team routinely draws large crowds, the NWSL has failed to capture the same audience. What is the next step for growing the club game in the United States to what we’ve been seeing lately in Europe?
Rapinoe: It has to come from a place of investment. It can’t just be a charity thing. That’s sort of willfully naive at this point. I think we’ve proven time and time again – whether it’s in the club game, in the international game, in friendlies and Euros and Champions League, whatever – it’s good business to invest in women’s football. And it’s also the right thing to do, but I think before it’s the right thing to do, it’s good business. We shouldn’t be trying to copy every single thing that men’s sports has, and I think that’s obviously a really easy trap to fall into. But I think when you actually invest in women’s sports: the energy is there, the culture around it is there, the fandom is there, but if I can’t figure out how to find the [video] stream … nobody is going to watch the game.
So it’s investing around the streaming services, investing around the front offices, investing around the facilities for the players, the stadiums for the players, ticketing, marketing, all of that. That’s the only thing that’s missing. The players and the product on the field have never been missing. It’s just that we’ve been neglected and under-financed and under-invested in forever. Lyon’s a perfect example. Champions of Europe a million times, champions of France a million times. You have that success and now coupling that with maybe a sea change in the culture, especially after the World Cup in France, you’re seeing obviously massive returns. The Euros were just sensational, Champions League this year was absolutely sensational and you’re seeing bigger attendances around the world.
Tumblr media
There is this unmistakable sense of momentum coming out of the Euros straight into a World Cup year. Aside from lifting the trophy, what would you most like to see out of next year’s tournament?
Ada Hegerberg: I keep on scratching my head after every big tournament. You have the World Cup, you have the Euros and then we get back to club and then it’s like the whole momentum just fades away. And I think that’s a huge problem. Like I’m a player in Europe, obviously, and I’ve seen what’s been happening here and – it’s like Megan mentioned earlier – every tournament has been a success in terms of interest from your home country, on a world basis, the coverage. You have this insane momentum and then you have all these best players going back to their clubs and it’s like you kind of lose this momentum. And I think it’s a shame.
Dazn did an incredible job with the Champions League this year. You had some pretty powerful coverage. People actually got a good platform to see all of the best games. But the problem is our home leagues, basically. I feel like England, they’re very good at selling their league. They’re very good at marketing their league, but the other leagues, we’ve got to step up. The federations are in control of these leagues and they have a huge job to do in order to lift the whole product, with the clubs obviously, and kind of shake it up a little bit and start selling the leagues, start selling good football matches where you actually have the best players playing every weekend. And that’s the next step, especially in Europe. You have to get the momentum up the whole year round.
Rapinoe: The only thing I would say about the World Cup next year, I would love to see the ball not be dropped. It’s absurd if it’s dropped again. That’s from the major stakeholders. That’s Uefa, that’s the federations, that’s Fifa, that’s Gianni [Infantino], specifically. It’s the Australian federation, everything. We know now that if you invest in this World Cup, it’s going to work. It’s just not even a fucking question. I would love to see people stop saying: Wow, I think we have something here! This is insane if you don’t invest in it. Whether that’s people are producing content or streaming services or sponsors or whatever it is.
It’s like a literal gold mine and I just don’t understand. I mean, I do understand: it’s sexism and patriarchy. The major stakeholders, most all of them are men and white men. Them being able to stand up and say: “You know what, like we got it wrong. We’ve been getting it wrong. We’ve been sexist.” Because that’s really what it is. We haven’t invested despite all of the key metrics pointing that this would be an incredible [return on investment].
You need to invest in the infrastructure around women’s sports, whether that’s streaming, branding, marketing, journalism, all of the things that help prop it up. I mean the men’s game, everybody talks about it all the time. I don’t want to know as much about LeBron James as I do, but I can’t not, because it’s in my face all the time. I’m sure in European football, with Canal+ and BBC Sport and all that, you probably don’t want to know as much about Jack Grealish as you do, but you’re going to anyway, because you can’t get him out of your mind. Stuff like that is really important.
Hegerberg: This kind of coverage will help change the mentalities, will help raise a completely different generation into training different, training smarter, to put the same demands to six-year-old girls that you do with six-year-old boys, for example. I wish that we were taken as seriously as boys when we started playing. And I think that has a huge impact on the level and long term as well, because I think that the game only can get better. The way the girls read the game, technically, we’ve seen that it’s been a huge change in the tempo and physically. Changing mentalities with having better coverage and investment, it will also have a huge impact on the next generation and how they play in 15 years, and I think that’s very important because we’re here to also raise the level year in and year out.
You mention the quality of European sides, Megan. How is the US women’s system planning on keeping up with Europe when they’re so clearly on America’s heels?
Rapinoe: The game is growing exponentially every year. It’s a huge challenge for us. I think the football being played at the Euros was the best football in the world that we’ve seen ever. I don’t think that’s even a question. It’s a huge challenge for us. We do know how to win. We do have a winning culture here. We know what we’re up against. So I think, for me, honestly, it’s exciting. It’s exciting that so many teams are so much better. It’s exciting that the level of competition is what it is. I think that brings out the best in everyone. But yeah, we’ve got a tall order to keep not only obviously our No 1 standing but to keep ourselves world champions. I’m excited for it. I think if you’re not pushed and you’re not challenged and you’re not shitting yourself a little bit, like what’s the point?

Bucks or Suns? Our writers share their picks

Bucks or Suns? Our writers share their picks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photograph: Christian Petersen/Getty Images
What the Suns need to do to win
Limit the Bucks’ second and third options. Giannis Antetokounmpo, who remains day-to-day with left knee injury, will find a way to hit baskets when he gets on the floor. It might be in transition. It might be in the half-court. But over the course of the series, he will have one or two Giannis Games. Limiting Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday and Antetokounmpo’s supporting cast will be the key. As the Suns’ rim-protector, much of the defensive responsibilities will fall on Deandre Ayton. The former No 1 overall draft pick has undergone a metamorphosis during this year’s playoffs, and he will need to bring every bit of his defensive savvy to bottle up the Bucks. Oliver Connolly
Related: Scottie Pippen’s latest bridge-burning tour is a reminder that hurt people hurt people | Andrew Lawrence
Keep doing what they’ve been doing. Offensively and defensively, the Suns have been one of the best teams in the postseason. If they continue to outscore their opponents while continuing to give up the least amount of points of any team in the playoffs, it will be too much for the Bucks to overcome. Tyrell Feaster
This will be easy for the Suns if they can keep rotating lead scorers: in the first game of the Western Conference finals against the Clippers, Devin Booker went off for 40 points with Chris Paul out. In their Game 2 win, Cameron Payne (!) went for 29, and then Paul returned, eventually dropping 41 in the Game 6 finale. Hunter Felt
The Suns’ assist-turnover ratio of 2.13 is second-best in the playoff field behind the long-gone Nuggets and practically in step with their league-high 2.15 rate during the regular season. The Bucks have forced 13.2 turnovers per game in the postseason, third-most in the tournament behind first-round doormats Miami and Memphis. Taking care of the ball against Milwaukee’s opportunistic defense as well as they’ve done all year is every bit as important as more obvious musts like keeping Devin Booker fed. Bryan Armen Graham
Story continues
What the Bucks need to do to win
Run and run and run. Give Antetokounmpo credit, he has adapted his game from series to series throughout the playoffs, leaning more on his burgeoning post game while serving as a screener and rim-runner. But there are still growing pains, and Antetokounmpo in the half-court – while still a great player – is not the unstoppable force that can carry his team through the finals. It will be difficult, but to overcome the (slight) talent gap, the Bucks need to revert as close to their traditional freewheelin’, up-and-down style as possible. They need to run. OC
Limit the Suns’ backcourt. This may be easier said than done, but if the Bucks can stop Chris Paul (playoff averages: 18.1 points, 8.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds) and Devin Booker (27.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists) from producing at their normal output, Phoenix will be in danger. TF
Get Antetokounmpo completely healthy somehow, first. If he can’t go or is less than 70%, the Bucks just might not have the firepower. He doesn’t even need to be Milwaukee’s best player; Khris Middleton could do that, but he would have to make an outsized impact. HF
TNT pundit Charles Barkley may have been on to something when he characterized Antetokounmpo’s knee injury as a blessing in disguise for Milwaukee. No one can credibly say the Bucks are better without the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, but his absence has clearly opened the floor for the supporting cast of Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis. To me, Holiday is the key. The veteran point guard averaged 22.0 points and 10.0 assists against the Hawks, shooting 46.4% from the floor and 37.0% from three-point range. Holiday’s maintaining his aggressive tack whether Giannis is on the floor or not will create opportunities for himself and his teammates while keeping 36-year-old Chris Paul’s hands full on both ends of the court. BAG
Your NBA finals MVP will be …
Chris Paul. NBA finals Most Valuable Player awards are as dependent on narrative as merit. Chris Paul has the best story of any player in the finals, and he just so happens to be the player that makes the Suns’ machine tick. It’s his time. OC
Mask on or mask off, it’s Devin Booker. One of only six players in NBA history to score 70 points in a single game, Booker has carried the Suns’ offense through the regular season, the postseason, and all signs point to him continuing to do so in this series. Booker will have to be on his A-game defensively in order to stop Khris Middleton and that will only help his MVP bid. TF
It feels like this is Chris Paul’s award to lose. The voters are dying for a chance to give him his flowers after a career’s worth of playoff futility (an occupational hazard of getting stuck on the Clippers during your peak years). Should the Bucks pull off the upset, however, it will be because Middleton absolutely goes off. If it makes Sheryl Crow happy, how bad an outcome could it be? HF
Related: Chris Paul: after 16 NBA seasons of bad luck has Point God’s time finally come?
Let’s take a flyer on Jrue Holiday. This traditionally narrative-driven plaudit is a fait accompli for Antetokounmpo if he returns for a meaningful chunk of the series and the Bucks prevail. But the recently unleashed Holiday could well become Milwaukee’s most important player on both sides of the ball the longer their leading man is sidelined. BAG
Unheralded player to watch
Mikal Bridges. Bridges is the kind of prototypical team-first, do-everything, three-and-D player that helps elevates a contender into a champion. He doesn’t fill the stat sheet, but he is a relentless defender and enough of an outside shooter to give Chris Paul and Devin Booker the space they need to operate on offense. OC
Jae Crowder on defense. While his teammates get all the attention for their offensive prowess, Crowder will have the tough task of defending Giannis Antetokounmpo. Limiting the Greek Freak will go a long way to determining this series, regardless of if he is slowed down by his hyperextended left knee. TF
It seems inevitable that we will have a Jae Crowder Game. Every so often, the Suns forward will go on stretches where his string of absurd three-pointers stop bouncing off the rim and start falling in every single time. When that happens, opposing defenses basically run out of workable tactics. HF
Mikal Bridges, the 6ft 6in swingman who is Phoenix’s fourth scoring option after Booker, Paul and Ayton, was something of a barometer for the Western Conference champions during the regular season: making 48.8% of his three-point attempts in the Suns’ wins and 30.6% in their losses. No stranger to high-pressure moments after winning a pair of NCAA titles with Villanova in 2016 and 2018, Bridges will be called upon to keep Milwaukee’s defense honest in the finals and create space where Paul and Booker can thrive. Even during a somewhat quiet postseason so far, Bridges’ 14 corner threes are second in the playoffs only to team-mate Cameron Johnson (15). BAG
One bold prediction
Every player makes it through the series without injury. Given the spate of injuries throughout the playoffs, the Basketball Gods owe the viewing public a healthy series. The CP3-v-Giannis-for-their-first-title storyline is too tantalizing. OC
Someone will thank Kobe after they win. At some point over the last year or so every NBA star has had some story about Kobe Bryant inspired them and there is no doubt someone will share one of these stories in the aftermath of the clincher. And that’s not a prediction; it’s a spoiler. TF
No more injuries. OK, this might be more of a prayer than a prediction. I think it was after Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals where it became a cruel joke: the Hawks came in missing Trae Young and then, during the course of the game, the Bucks lost Antetokounmpo to that hyperextended knee. We simply must beseech the Basketball Gods to lay off for the extent of these finals. HF
Well, a Twitter user named Jarrett Plahmer is the clubhouse leader in this category, but I’ll play anyway: Holiday wins NBA finals MVP after spiriting the Bucks until Giannis can return. BAG
Who deserves a title more: Chris Paul or Giannis Antetokounmpo?
Chris Paul. Deserves is a loaded word, but after a lifetime of being a maybe-nearly-almost player, if anyone deserves a NBA finals appearance, it’s Chris Paul, the Point God. The only thing lacking from Paul’s Greatest Point Guard of his Generation résumé is a title. In the present-day culture where ringz are all that seem to matter, winning a title will formalize a historic greatness that needs no validation. Giannis will have plenty more shots to win a title; this is it for Paul. OC
Chris Paul and it’s not even close. Paul has long been viewed as one basketball’s greatest point guards and an NBA title remains the only thing missing from his Hall of Fame résumé. Paul’s influence both on and off the court has taken a young Phoenix team that went off as 40-1 underdogs in the preseason to the oddsmakers’ favorites in the NBA finals. A championship ring would be the perfect way to cement his legacy. TF
I mean, obviously, this is Paul’s category. He’s a Hall of Famer, one of the greatest point guards of all time and he’s never even been to the NBA finals until this year. He’s 36 years old, on his fifth team, and it’s a fair bet that he will never get a better shot at a championship. Antetokounmpo will get another chance, it feels like. HF
I’m more from the Will Munny than Little Bill school when it comes to deserves. Paul is the sentimental favorite on circumstance, but Antetokounmpo’s preposterous stat-sheet stuffing over the past half-decade is a body of work no less worthy of a ring. Interestingly, the Greek Freak is one of only two players in history to have earned back-to-back MVP awards without having won an NBA title … along with longtime Suns talisman Steve Nash. BAG
The winner will be …
Phoenix in six. Typically, finals matchups are dictated by whichever team can get buckets late in the shot clock: cheap buckets, dirty buckets, tough buckets. As the level cranks up in the playoffs, the ability to play within a set, free-flowing offense rolls out the window. Things get stodgy. Winning comes down to whichever team has the most shot-makers who can hit shots off-the-dribble, in isolation. The Suns have more reliable shot-makers from three to 16 feet out than the Bucks. For Milwaukee to win, it’s going to take an extraordinary defensive effort. OC
Phoenix in six. The Suns’ storybook season will get its happy ending and Phoenix will win their first NBA title. Paul’s leadership and ability to elevate the already talented Booker and Ayton will create too many problems for Milwaukee to stop. Giannis and co will pull off two games, but Phoenix will win a close hard-fought series on the road in Game 6. TF
Phoenix in five. Even without Antetokounmpo, the Bucks are good enough to steal a win away from the Suns. But even if he returns, it doesn’t strike me as realistic to hope that he’ll be in the MVP form the Bucks would require to make this a serious contest. The third time will prove the charm for the Suns, after their 1976 and 1993 heartbreaks, as they finally lift the trophy in their 53rd season. HF
Milwaukee in six. Yes, it was against a middleweight Hawks team only in the East finals because of Philadelphia’s stunning collapse in the semis, but you can’t help but marvel at how the Bucks circled the wagons after Antetokounmpo went down. The Holiday-Middleton-Lopez triumvirate was never better than in Milwaukee’s two closeout games, including a combined 72 points, 19 rebounds, 16 assists, seven steals and five blocks in the Game 6 clincher. All Things Must Pass was top of the US charts last time Milwaukee won the NBA championship in 1971; if the title track can also apply to the fourth-quarter fizzles that have routinely undone the Bucks as favorites in the past two postseasons, a long-awaited second title is theirs for the taking. BIGGER IN DEATH
by Bert A. Ramirez / February 02, 2020
The shocking, tragic passing of Kobe Bryant last January 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others generated an outpouring of grief, anguish, sympathy and pathos worldwide the likes of which might have never been seen before.  Why, even my own daughter Tintin, previously so casual, if not apathetic, towards my love for basketball, suddenly became involved herself, posting even more material in the family chat group than I did.
Obviously, the way Kobe died along with his daughter and the rest of their companions had something to do with such a universal reaction.  It was a case of being gone at a remarkably young age (41) that isn’t even approached by the death of another legend, pop music and entertainment icon Michael Jackson, as Kobe died in such a cruel manner while Jackson, whose own demise at 50 shocked the world in 2009, died of a natural cause, albeit induced by an external factor.
What made Bryant’s death oh-so-tragic is the fact that he was just about beginning a second act just after a remarkable career that made him a pop culture icon in the mold of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi and Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, to name just a few sports figures who have reached iconic stature in this age of the Internet.
“Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act,” former US President Barack Obama, himself an avid basketball fan, said.
“To think that Kobe was at the peak of his life, retired from basketball but capable of taking care of his family and doing charitable works with all the resources he had, is something anyone cannot comprehend with this tragic life ending,” my own brother Tony, a passionate basketball fan like me, told our Celtics chat group.
“Oh man.  This is just so sad!” Ryan Mercado of the same Celtics chat group exclaimed.  “Kobe is not only a loss to basketball but he was an icon, an ambassador and a humanitarian as well.”
“A true legend in the game of basketball and an inspiration to the world,” baseball great Barry Bonds tweeted of his friend as he mourned his passing and that of his young girl.
“I guess sports fans all over the world are devastated by the tragic loss of a transcendent figure and his daughter,” my own kumpare and fellow roundball enthusiast Erick Reyes said.  “Kobe always played the old-fashioned way.  He didn't demand for (star) teammates.  He always believed that he could carry the team by being a good role model.  He played injured, didn't go for load management.  He didn't bring his talent elsewhere and could have won many more championships.  Instead, in the tradition of the greats like Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and others who wore that purple-and-gold uniform, Kobe stayed with the Lakers until he retired.
“I was in Negros when Kobe played his final game in the NBA.  I watched the game while having lunch and I thought this was one of the emotional farewell games.  Instead, we were treated to a feast.  He scored 60 points and led the Lakers to a 101-96 victory over the Utah Jazz.  That is Kobe for you.  He wanted the ball till the end.”
Indeed, what made Kobe Bryant different from his peers was the way he approached his commitment to his sport and his profession, spawning what eventually became known as “mamba mentality” (in reference to his nickname “Black Mamba”), a kind of work ethic and passion that simply prescribes how one should approach an endeavor in order to be successful.
“There was nothing inauthentic about Bryant’s intensity,” Bryan Armen Graham of The Guardian wrote in explaining Kobe’s commitment and approach to his job as a pro athlete.  “He was probably the hardest worker in sports. Often it is supporting players who are praised for getting the very most out of their talent, but Bryant was an example of a supremely gifted athlete hell-bent on squeezing every last drop from his natural gifts, propelled by a maniacal competitive streak that wouldn’t have been out of place on Wall Street in the ‘80s and often led to flare-ups with cooler-tempered teammates, most infamously with Shaq (O’Neal).
“He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated no fewer than 20 times (when such appearances still mattered) and became one of the rare sporting figures to genuinely transcend the sports pages in the US and become a household name.  His international popularity may have even exceeded his standing at home as he became a crucial figure in elevating the sport’s global profile.  Michael Phelps may have won a record eight gold medals at the (2008) Beijing Olympics, but Kobe was the star of those Games on the ground.”
Kobe had game, all right, but this goes far more than his basketball stature. He was viewed as an inspirational figure who after his retirement became one of the greatest ambassadors of the game, if he still wasn’t one as an active professional.  As Kobe himself remarked, “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great at whatever they want to do.”
This is why even the staunchest Celtics fans like me cried (secretly of course) when I learned about Kobe’s and his companions’ tragic death.  Bryant, I told a friend who had met him personally in his basketball academy in Los Angeles, was one of my most hated rivals because of my lifelong affinity with the Celtics, but the tragedy that befell him and the rest of his companions that included his daughter Gigi knows no bounds.  We're all human, after all, and thus we cry with their followers and loved ones.
As a member of Facebook page Celtics Nation said, “As Celtics fans we are taught one thing, hate the Lakers.  But this is bigger than basketball.  He was a husband, a father and an icon.  Loved by millions around the world.  The impact he made will never be matched.”
Kobe Bryant’s persona that had gained worldwide fame because of modern technology has no doubt also contributed to the worldwide impact of his passing.  Many who had the privilege of having had personal encounters with him, from avowed Lakers fan and sports broadcaster Jinno Rufino to that friend of mine who used to work at the now-defunct RPN 9, Babette Pascual-Yllana, are all unanimous in saying that Bryant was a gentle human being, a humble and gentlemanly character who belied that sporting image of an arrogant competitor who had that undeniable swagger and confidence.
“When I met him, there was not a tinge of yabang.  Very accommodating,” Babette said.  “During those times he was already planning for his retirement, that’s why he put up the Kobe Bryant Basketball Academy and, later, the Mamba Sports Academy.  At that time, he was already working on the legacy that he would leave behind.
“He was a gentleman, it stood out.  Maybe perhaps he was raised in italy?  I noticed that in my travels, mas well-mannered sila kaysa Americans.  (Kobe, of course, partly grew up in Italy as his father, former NBA frontliner Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, played for a while in the Italian League, one of the top professional leagues in Europe.)  Even if they (the Italians) also have superiority complex, di sila entitled kung umasta.  You could see it in Kobe then that he had a good heart.”
Of course, that good heart knew no bounds when Kobe needed to mentor or to simply encourage fellow basketball players young and old alike when they needed some words of wisdom or encouragement, like what Kobe did to current and former Celtics Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward and Isaiah Thomas.  Bryant was one of the first to advise Hayward on what attitude to take when the then-first-year Celtic suffered that horrific ankle injury in 2017.
Perhaps what also made people relate more with Bryant was the fact that they could identify with him despite his superstar image because of his own frailties and weaknesses, which he never hid from the public but eventually overcame with that single-minded purpose and determination for which he became noted. In 2003, for example, he was accused of raping a woman in his hotel room while he was in Denver for knee surgery.  While admitting having sex with the woman, he denied rape, and a judge eventually dropped the charges, although he had to eventually settle out of court when the woman went on to file a civil lawsuit.
While issuing a public apology, stating that he was sincerely ashamed of what he had done, Bryant had to go through a turbulent phase in his life that culminated with wife Vanessa filing for a divorce in 2011.  Eventually though, the two reconciled, with Kobe turning to his Catholic faith and upbringing to overcome his personal crisis. Kobe and Vanessa later founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation that is dedicated to, among other things, helping young people in need, encouraging the development of physical and social skills through sports, and assisting the homeless.
Asked about this commitment in 2013, Bryant said, “My career is winding down.  At the end of my career, I don’t want to look back and just say, ‘Well, I had a successful career because I won so many championships and scored so many points.’  There’s something else that you have to do with that.  (The homelessness) issue is one that kind of gets pushed on the back burner because it’s easy to point the blame at those who are homeless and say, ‘Well, you made that bad decision.  This is where you are.  It’s your fault.’  In life, we all make mistakes and to stand back and allow someone to live that way and kind of wash your hands of it… that’s not right.”
Is it still surprising why Bryant achieved that iconic status of his?
“An icon is the perfect word for him.  His impact was far more than basketball.  Unbelievable,” Brandon Goldberg of Celtics Nation said.
“Kobe was an icon and a legend.  He was always driven and committed to his goals.  A man with vision,” said my own sister in the US, Kitchie Beltran, not especially a staunch sports fan like another younger sister, Lourdes Beltran is (they’re married to brothers, thus the similar surnames), but who knew Kobe through the extent his stature reached.  “The impact of his death was felt by almost everyone.  They say that the people’s reaction to Kobe’s passing could be compared to the way the world reacted to the death of JFK (former US President John Kennedy) and the loss of Princess Diana.”
That’s true, of course.  And that's also due in part to the available technology nowadays, which really brings more intimacy to a worldwide public, providing infinitely more people much closer knowledge about a celebrity or icon, particularly a great basketball star like Kobe whose game has become a global sport much like football.  And this is why the impact of Kobe's death is felt more not only because of the circumstances of his death, but also because basketball is now in the world's cultural mainstream due to the technology available.
Even then, all those factors wouldn’t have made a difference in making Kobe Bryant even bigger in death than he was in life perhaps without the element that counts most of all – his character and greatness as a human being. That element transcended race, sports and cultural boundaries for him to be universally mourned.
As my favorite golfer of all time, Jack Nicklaus, said, “Kobe Bryant embodied excellence.  Legendary talent; inspirational athlete; great role model; American icon loved globally.  Sports lost a tremendous friend but (you) don’t have to be (a) sports fan for your heart to hurt.  Just have to be human!”
“You inspired a generation,” my brother Raul’s inaanak Angel Espejo de Llana said in his own obituary for Kobe. “You were the example of hard work and determination.  You will always be remembered as an inspiration and a hero.”
“Kobe was truly larger than life, a legend,” Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio tweeted.  “LA will never be the same.”
Perhaps Bill Velasco, in his eloquent tribute to Bryant in The Philippine Star, put it best when he wrote, “I believe that the deepest, core reason why Kobe Bryant stirred us so is that he took us to places inside us that very few of us dared to go…  It was his fearlessness to look within, to face his weaknesses, to pile onto his strengths, to refuse to recognize limits, that is what we mourn…  Kobe Bryant ventured alone into the realm of what is possible more deeply than most of us ever will…  He showed us the light that leads inside of us, and faced his own demons and flaws to prove that it could be done.”
Rest in peace, Kobe.  Yours was a life that was short by human standards, but it was a life well-lived, and a life that gave joy to millions of people.

The history of the Chiefs and 49ers in the Super Bowl
Tumblr media

Kansas City won the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years, while it’s been 25 for San Francisco.
The Super Bowl 54 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami was an absolute thriller. The Chiefs trailed 20-10 entering the fourth quarter, but then scored 21 unanswered points to win 31-20. Both of these franchises entered with Super Bowl histories, though it had been a long time since either hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.
The 49ers have more Super Bowl wins than all but just two teams in the NFL, whereas the Chiefs have played for a championship twice. Let’s take a look at how these two teams’ Super Bowl histories compare.
Kansas City Chiefs
Super Bowl appearances, including this season: 3 Championships: 2
Chiefs fans had to wait decades to see their team win another Super Bowl. In fact, it had been a whole 50 years since Kansas City has played in a Super Bowl. The Chiefs had the fourth-longest active drought without a Super Bowl appearance until they ended that streak this year.
During the 1969 season, the Chiefs went 11-3, won their first two playoff games, and then defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, 23-7. Kansas City quarterback Len Dawson was named the MVP, throwing for 142 yards and the game’s only passing touchdown.
Previously, the Chiefs had played in the first-ever Super Bowl in January 1967, when they lost 35-10 to the Green Bay Packers. At halftime, this famous picture of Dawson smoking a cigarette and drinking a Fresca was taken:

At the time, it was called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, though it was later renamed Super Bowl I.
The Chiefs’ Super Bowl win three years later was also the final season of the American Football League before it merged with the NFL in 1970.
Until now, the closest the Chiefs came to the Super Bowl after that was two conference championship game berths. In January 1994, the Chiefs lost 30-13 to the Buffalo Bills. Last season, Kansas City fell to the New England Patriots, 37-31, in overtime of the AFC title game.
Chiefs’ Super Bowl appearances by season: 1966: Loss to the Packers 1969: Win over the Vikings 2019: Win over the 49ers
San Francisco 49ers
Super Bowl appearances, including this season: 7 Championships: 5
The 49ers have a much more extensive Super Bowl history than the Chiefs, but it took them longer to make it to a championship game. The 49ers won their first Super Bowl in the 1981 season under legendary head coach Bill Walsh. The 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21, and quarterback Joe Montana was named the game’s MVP. He threw for 157 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing touchdown.
Walsh won two more Super Bowls for San Francisco during the 1984 and 1988 seasons, also with Montana as his quarterback. The 49ers took down Dan Marino’s Dolphins team and then Cincinnati again four years later. Walsh retired in 1989 following the last Super Bowl win, and the very next year, new head coach George Seifert led San Francisco to a Super Bowl. The 49ers destroyed the Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV in Seifert’s first season. Montana also won his third and final Super Bowl MVP Award.
Montana will go down as quite possibly the greatest Super Bowl quarterback of all time, going 4-0 in the big game. He also averaged 286 yards per game, had an 11:0 TD:INT ratio, 68 percent completion rate, and 9.4 yards per pass in those Super Bowls.
In 1994, Seifert’s 49ers steamrolled the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. That was Steve Young’s first Super Bowl title as the starting quarterback. He’s also one of only six players to ever win both NFL and Super Bowl MVP honors in the same season.
The 49ers then experienced a bit of a Super Bowl drought. It wasn’t until the 2012 season that San Francisco made it back under second-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. John Harbaugh and the Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII that season. Unfortunately 49ers fans will have to wait at least another year longer to see their team win a Super Bowl.
49ers’ Super Bowl appearances by season: 1981: Win over the Bengals 1984: Win over the Dolphins 1988: Win over the Bengals 1989: Win over the Broncos 1994: Win over the Chargers 2012: Loss to the Ravens 2019: Loss to the Chiefs
Super Bowl 54 lived up to the hype. Both teams were among the NFL’s elite all season, but the Chiefs stepped up in the fourth quarter when it mattered most.
