Waterplace and WaterFire, pt. 2
This tiny park sits at the new confluence of the Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck rivers forms the Providence River. The old confluence was under the old post office. (Photo by author) This post reprints the second half of Chapter 21, “Waterplace and WaterFire,” from Lost Providence. The Waterplace design by Bill Warner was so good that many experts were confused. It reminded me of the what several…

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗜𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝘆? 𝗔 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗔𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲
Steve Lacy is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who has made a name for himself as a member of the alternative R&B band The Internet and as a solo artist. Born in Compton, California, in 1998, Lacy grew up in a musical environment, influenced by his mother's gospel singing and his father's Filipino heritage. He developed an interest in the guitar at the age of seven, inspired by the video game Guitar Hero. He later joined the jazz band at his high school, where he met Jameel Bruner, the keyboardist of The Internet. Bruner invited Lacy to join the band as a guitarist and producer, and Lacy made his debut on their third studio album, Ego Death, in 2015.
His involvement with the Internet opened up many opportunities for him to collaborate with other artists and showcase his talents. He co-produced and was featured on songs by J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, Kali Uchis, Solange, Vampire Weekend, and more. He also released his own solo projects, starting with a six-track EP titled Steve Lacy's Demo in 2017. The EP was recorded entirely on his iPhone using a plug-in for his guitar called an iRig. It received critical acclaim for its lo-fi aesthetic and eclectic blend of R&B, funk, rock, and soul.
He followed up his EP with his first full-length album, Apollo XXI, in 2019. The album was more ambitious and personal than his previous work, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and self-discovery. Lacy came out as bisexual on the song "Like Me," featuring DAISY. He also experimented with different genres and sounds, incorporating elements of jazz, psychedelic, pop, and ambient music. The album was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Lacy's most recent album, Gemini Rights, was released in 2022. The album was a commercial and critical success, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart. It featured the hit single "Bad Habit," which became Lacy's first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after going viral on TikTok. The song was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, while the album won Best Progressive R&B Album.
One of Lacy's most notable collaborators is Tyler, the Creator, who has been a fan and friend of Lacy since they met through Odd Future. Lacy co-produced and was featured on Tyler's songs "911 / Mr. Lonely" and "Running Out of Time." They also performed together at several festivals and events. Lacy has praised Tyler for his creativity and innovation, saying that he is "one of my favorite artists ever." Tyler has also expressed his admiration for Lacy's music and style, calling him "a genius" and "a legend."
Steve Lacy is one of the most influential and versatile artists of his generation. He has proven himself as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer who can create music across genres and platforms. He has also been a trailblazer for queer representation and expression in mainstream music. He continues to evolve and experiment with his sound and vision, inspiring fans and peers alike. Steve Lacy is not only a star of The Internet, but also a star of the future.

Fall Season of Play On Shakespeare Podcast LIVE: Et tu, Brute?
It's disappointing that most people intersect with famed English playwright William Shakespeare in high school English and then only reference The Bard when playing pub trivia.
Play On Shakespeare, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to exploring the world of Shakespeare in performance through translation and adaptation, has been working diligently to change that perspective.
Building upon Play On Shakespeare’s mission to enhance the understanding of Shakespeare’s plays in performance, Play On Podcasts bring timeless tales directly to modern audiences. The series – presented by Next Chapter Podcasts in partnership with Play On Shakespeare – has released Macbeth, Pericles, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Coriolanus amongst various other titles over the last few years.
Play On Podcasts recently won two Signal Awards – for Best Original Music/Score (Gold) and for Best Scripted Fiction (Silver). Play On Podcasts also recently won at The Ambies – for Best Original Score and Music Supervision [Lindsay Jones for Othello].
This fall, Play On Podcasts releases Julius Caesar in a modern verse translation by Shishir Kurup. Episode 1 will drop on October 14.
Listen here.
For those who enjoy live performances, Play On Shakespeare has announced its Fall 2024 Season.
Fall 2024 Season:
Coriolanus Presented by Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Portland Center Stage Produced in association with upstart crow collective and Play On Shakespeare Now through October 13 Translation: Sean San José Adaption and Direction: Rosa Joshi Location: Thomas Theatre [Ashland, OR]
When civil unrest wracks Rome as the famine-ravaged underclass battle the ruling elite, a war hero steps into the spotlight to serve his nation—only to turn on it and seek its overthrow. Shakespeare’s rarely produced tragedy comes to visceral life in a powerful, movement-focused production featuring a cast of female and non-binary actors.
More information here.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream Great Lakes Theater in partnership with Idaho Shakespeare Festival October 4 - 27 Translation: Jeff Whitty Direction: Sara Bruner Location: Great Lakes Theater - Hanna Theatre, Playhouse Square [Cleveland, OH]
An exhilarating night of midsummer madness, this magical comedy brims with mistaken identity, mismatched lovers, and mischief-making fairies. This modern verse translation of Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece ensnares two pairs of lovers and a rustic troupe of would-be actors in a forest full of comedic adventure. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a joyful celebration of love lost, transformed, and restored that casts a powerfully pleasing spell.

The Winter’s Tale Presented by 1623 Theatre Company December 6 - January 11 Translation: Tracy Young Adaptation and Direction: Ben Spiller Location: Attenborough Arts Centre (throughout December) [Leicester, UK] Location: Derby Theatre Studio (throughout January) [Derby, UK]
It’s the toughest winter ever in Sicilia Court, a rundown council estate still waiting to be leveled up. High costs and low wages mean cold homes, hungry stomachs, and desperate minds. It’s impossible for anyone to hold their nerve here. When the king of the estate accuses his wife of cheating, he shames her in public and threatens anyone who dares to challenge him. As jealousy and rage spiral out of control, unthinkable cruelty takes over the estate and everything falls apart. Is there any hope that the truth will out, and will the community ever recover? The Winter's Tale is co-created by a team of Deaf, disabled, LGBTQ+, global majority, neurodivergent, and working-class theater-makers.
More information here.
ACMRS Press [Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies] has released all of Play On Shakespeare’s translations in print (39 titles).
Play On Shakespeare’s DEMOS project is available on YouTube. The DEMOS project is a series of vibrant, short films that demonstrate side-by-side performances of Shakespeare’s original text and the modern translations, featuring extraordinarily talented actors with a wealth of experience performing Shakespeare.
MORE ON PLAY ON SHAKESPEARE:
Play On Shakespeare is a non-profit company promoting and creating contemporary modern translations of Shakespeare’s plays. Play On Shakespeare partners with artists and organizations across the globe to deliver and advocate for these translations through theatrical productions, podcasts, and publications. For more information, visit playonshakespeare.org. Play On Shakespeare is made possible through the generous support of the Hitz Foundation.
The Hitz Foundation has projects in science, the arts, and the environment worldwide. In addition to Play On Shakespeare and Play On Podcasts, the foundation funds Global Digital Heritage, which captures state-of-the-art 3D models of museum collections and heritage sites and shares them with the world at no cost.
Before I go, here's some Shakespeare knowledge you can use to impress your friends. "According to a report by Priceonomics, A Midsummer Night's Dream gets the most professional performances nowadays. The website Shakespearances documented nearly every professional Shakespeare production worldwide, and A Midsummer Night's Dream accounted for more than 7% of all Shakespeare performances. (Together, Parts 1 and 2 of Henry VI were the least performed."

May/2024🌗♓️I’ve seen some 🤡 shit 💩 that would turn you WHITE.
🌗▪️ ♅︎ The Fonda concert times up nicely with Whiplash. I was genuinely taken aback by what a great film that was. There were a few exceptions. There were no women in the core band. Also, I don’t recall seeing ANY Asian kids, which was not realistic, especially for a core jazz band.
🌗▪️ ♃︎ J.K.’s performance reminded me of a combination between my piano teacher Mrs. Ross and my theatre director Mr. Bruner. Mrs. Ross could lay on the guilt if I hadn’t practiced. Mr. Bruner would curse and throw shit. (Bruner was also a misogynist and it was rumored he preyed on the slutty girls.) I was Mrs. Ross’s 2nd best piano student. I won several actor, and director awards, including scholarships for my work in the theater. I worked hard, I was in twenty fucking lead productions in four years. I also won media video scholarships. I wanted to be a director. I should have been given the guidance and support I needed to follow that path, because I was a better fucking director than most graduates at 19. Whatever. Everyone worked against me, so I just stayed in survivor mode.
🌗< 🦺 Elliott was the neighbor kid that did good. I’d like to think I had something to do with that. J.K.’s performance at the end of Whiplash disappointed me. He should have been crying. It should have been a combination of laughing and crying. The crying more subtle. I needed to see more because he was witnessing a spiritual moment. When an artist finds their ‘zen’ within a piece of work, that work now becomes a part of them. The work also flows into everything else as a collective consciousness of humanity. Truth flows in a way enlightenment flows. It creates a path for humanity to follow. It becomes an infinite light. J.K. was witnessing a transformation. That kid is never going to be the same person he once was, so it is like a birth and a death.
♀️ Λ 🎸 I cried when I witnessed Elliott’s transformation. The perfect student, or was I the perfect teacher, because I let my student teach me? I didn’t think you belonged to me anymore, Elliott. When you have a gift you belong to the world. I NEVER saw you again, because I carry a lot of baggage. I never stopped loving YOU as a person. Our bad timing has became so bad it has turned into a fucking time loop. Maybe you need to respect your teacher and let me be, now. If you are alive, go back to work. Artists are always working. Are you an artist or not? If you are, you owe me better songs. Artists are always creating. Are you an artist or an actor, Elliott? If you are an actor, then you are my bitch, because I AM a director. If you are an artist, resurrect yourself. This world needs your art more than I need you. If you are an artist, I only want you to be you.
🌗< ☊ When the scholars proclaim: “Die every day.” They don’t mean die literally. Experience an EGO DEATH so you may learn something new. J.K.’s character did not believe he was being cruel to his students for the sake of cruelty. He was trying to get his students used to an ego death, because the gifted ones can be lazy. They must be challenged, so they can grow beyond their gifts. I think the film sparks a good conversation about when discipline is applied too forcefully it can utterly destroy the growth of an artist. The teacher must learn to learn how to teach everyday. There must be more compassion between the student and the teacher for the sake of growth. I’d like to have seen more of that complexity written into J.K.’s character in the script. However, when you analyze the dialogue, the film was really a Zionist propaganda film. It was written by people who obviously do not understand the development of genius.
🌗< ☿︎ Did you exchange my truth for convenient lies? It must have killed us both in a way. Try not to do that again or you could destroy the whole Universe. I AM an artist.

Research Ideas progression...
Paul = Experimenting with musical strategies to enhance engagement with Level 1 SEND students (cognitive development) when working on X.
Methods will run across 4 sessions: 1st without low level music, 2nd with classical, 3rd with no music again and 4th with classical. Evaluate engagement levels and consistency of behaviours (using observations through Research Journal).
Obtain qualitative feedback after each session and analyse/ reflect of results
X minutes freewriting or colouring exercises?? See Kerry for appropriate amount of time.
Mick = Total Recall. Developing knowledge of inspection tests across three strategies (Level 1 and 2 approaches to differ in relation to knowledge base/ risk assessment protocols). Working with numbers (1-10) to self-evaluate (ability/ capability/ confidence) but this needs to be more focused on qualitative data - to sit alongside self-awarded grades. Using Vygotsky & Bruner.
Aim to improve autonomy, and problem solving skills through set scenarios (broader goal to improve attendance and punctuality...)
Methods: 5 scaffolding/ ZPD (students walk through it).
6 steps in sequence. to see which method worked best (understanding, speed, confidence).
Glyn = Industrial versus Domestic students - addressing the gap (supported by new qualification). Blending/ mixing student skillsets to enhance professional aptitudes in Electrical lighting rigging/ planning.
Need to think about what is the qualitative data going to look like? (capture and analyse)...
Pre-research questionnaire - work background, materials etc.
Domestic Apprentices v Commercial apprentices.
Issue floor plan (opposite flip drawing/ on own).
2. Buddy up - reissue drawings (pairs).
3. Buddy up - alternate.
4. Repeat stage 1 (Back to individual).
Sophie = Experimenting with L2 student-centred strategies to further engagement and motivation in the art room.
Idea based on observations that art students lack confidence in own creative artwork and thus this impacts on positive articulation of the self.
Methods:
Use student work as THE starting point and as a mode of dismantling the creative process.
Using lesson objectives as a debrief process rather than setting the tone.
Self-assessment and reflection without judgement exercises (x 2 or 3). Developing critical mindset and self-confidence through key terms (with student selected additionals...) and assuming a non-judgement approach to appraisals.
Great work, see you next week.

The Last Chapter of the Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar (Or How the Great Reuniting Matters to Dethklok)
Over the years, [adult swim] has given us so many incredible characters like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Primal, Rick & Morty, The Boondocks, and The Venture Brothers. But one show from [adult swim] has always been my go-to, and that show is none other than Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha’s Metalocalypse (2006-2016 / 2019- present). The band featured in Metalocalypse includes fictional members: Nathaniel Explosion – voiced by Brendon Small (vocals), Skwisgaar Skwigelf – voiced by Brendon Small (guitars), Toki Wartooth – voiced by Tommy Blacha and Mike Keneally (guitars), Pickles – voiced by Brendon Small (drums), and William Murderface voiced by Tommy Blacha (bass).
In 2013, Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha gave us the rock opera smash hit, Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem – A Klok Opera as the story picks up after the end of Metalocalypse season 4. For ten years, Dethklok had been relatively quiet with some live shows scattered around featuring creator Brendon Small (guitars/lead vocals), Gene Hoglan (drums), Pete Griffin (bass/backing vocals), and most recently Nili Brosh (guitars). Now in 2023, Dethklok has announced not only a new album (Dethalbum IV) plus a new movie closing out this epic adventure that features a companion soundtrack, Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar (released theatrically on July 21, 2023/Digital and Blu-ray on August 22, 2023).
Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar was written and directed by Brendon Small. The film stars Small, Blancha, Victor Brandt (Metalocalypse), Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner (Grammy® Award-winning musician), King Diamond (King Diamond; Mercyful Fate), Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series; The Machine), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Jon Hamm (Confess, Fletch; Top Gun: Maverick), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Amy Lee (Evanescence), Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Juliet Mills (Passions), Laraine Newman (Saturday Night Live), Raya Yarbrough (Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem - a Klok Opera), and Livia Zita (2022 winner - Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Award).
Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar follows the gallant rescue of Toki Wartooth from Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem – A Klok Opera where brutal frontman Nathan Explosion is dealing with some extreme trauma after the band battles their former bandmate, Magnus Hammersmith to the death. To make matters worse, the fate of the world now lies in Nathan’s hands as he has been tasked to write the “Song of Salvation”. As you can guess, this task weighs heavily on humanity’s embattled protector. So much so that Nathan’s character will undertake an arduous path to redemption and rebirth as he guides his bandmates through the ultimate battle of good versus evil. As Nathan would say, it just takes him “…a long time to learn stuff”.
After being anointed the new high priest of the Church of the Black Klok in Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem – A Klok Opera, Charles Offdensen will once again use his powers of persuasion to get the band motivated to write the “Song of Salvation”. Offdensen would tell Pickles, Nathan’s “trials are yet to begin” but he must first face the fear that “engulfs” him. Nathan might be the key to the salvation of humanity, but his bandmates are also vital to the prophecy. As foretold in the ancient prophecy, the Metalocalypse is upon us and all that is good will die. No biggie, right?
Dethklok will once again face off against well-known antagonists, The Tribunal which includes Senator Stampingston, General Crozier, Vater Orlaag, and most importantly, Mr. Salacia. As in previous episodes, Mr. Salacia and The Tribunal will once again make life very hard for Dethklok in their attempt to save humanity from the impending Doomstar. Unbeknownst to the band, the “Song of Salvation” is just a part of the prophecy to save humanity. Dethklok must also find the strength to look within to find the final piece needed to defeat the Doomstar. If Dethklok fails, then they cannot stop the impending doom of the Metalocalypse and the Great Reuniting. Will Dethklok complete the “Song of Salvation” in time to save the world? Well, you will have to watch Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar to find out.
Of course, as the saga ends, one would expect to see cameos from previous characters like Dethklok’s chef Jean-Pierre and music producer extraordinaire Dick “Magic Ears” Knubbler. But the most important cameo to grace their presence was none other than the self-proclaimed “rock and roll clown”, Dr. Rockzo. This scene will go down as one of the best Dr. Rockzo montages ever seen on Metalocalypse. Overall, Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar is a brilliant conclusion to the epic Metalocalypse saga that any fan of the series will instantly hail as a cult classic. I have already watched it a few times over the last weekend and even after this review is published, I will continue to watch it because it is that good. Some shows when they bring the story to an end, it feels rushed at times or maybe they do not tie up all the necessary storylines. Not Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, this movie will leave the viewer satisfied knowing Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha were able to finish Metalocalypse as intended. Thank you, Brendon, and Tommy. Thank you for wanting to give closure to an idea that amassed dedicated fans across the globe.
On August 22, 2023, Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar will be available on Blu-ray and digitally on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, and more. Blu-ray special features will include a featurette entitled Behind the Metal Curtain. This in-depth look at the making of Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar will have interviews with show co-creator Brendon Small and his team of writers, animators, and musicians as they share their stories and experiences as they turn this [adult swim] series into its first feature film. Currently, MAX has the entire Metalocalypse series and Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem – A Klok Opera available to stream, so go get a Metalocalypse marathon going in honor of the release of the final chapter in this legendary saga.

Legality of the SAG-AFTRA, WGA Strike
By Andrew Bruner, University of Kentucky Class of 2024
July 24, 2023
July 14, 2023, is a monumental date for the movie-making world of Hollywood. On this day, the SAG-AFTRA, or Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, went on strike. They join the WGA (Writers Guild of America) against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) amid an ongoing labor dispute. Today represents the first time since 1960 [1] that both the SAG-AFTRA and WGA worker unions have been on strike against the studios, halting all film and television production across the country for an extended period. Shows like HBO's House of the Dragon remain one of few currently in production due to their contract under the British Union Equity rather than SAG-AFTRA [2]. This article will delve deep into the origins of union strikes, what they mean for Hollywood, and the legal aspects enabling such a situation to occur.
For those who don't know, a labor union is defined by the Department of Labor as a group of employees who join to advance common interests such as wages, benefits, schedules, etc. [3] The purpose of joining together is that it gives workers a stronger voice and bargaining power in negotiations with employers. The world of Hollywood works the same as unions seen for workers at a local Kroger. For every celebrity actor and writer apart of the unions are far more working-class actors and writers struggling to live paycheck by paycheck. The current strike is primarily to support the lives of these unknown names, not the typical big Hollywood star. Even if writers and actors want to pursue projects, their membership in these labor unions typically prevents them from partaking until the strike ends. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA will work to pursue a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the AMPTP. A CBA is a legally enforceable contract between an employer and employees that results from extensive negotiations between a labor union and an employer. Unions often take drastic measures like strikes when talks on a new CBA fail. The unions' strike pressures AMPTP to budge in negotiations on a new CBA. The legality of a CBA makes the side that ultimately gives in to demands critical. Once both sides agree on a new CBA, all mandatory sections included are legally enforceable for the other party to meet. If the AMPTP gives in, the law forces them to comply with all compulsory agreed-upon areas. The legal binding of a CBA is where one sees the pushback from their side: Whatever both parties agree to, both must uphold.
In recent years, one large talking point surrounding negotiations has been the meteoric rise of streaming services. These services dramatically impact the compensation received by SAG-AFTRA members for their work. For shows that release instantly on a streaming service, entertainment companies have moved away from compensating their actors through residuals [4]. Residuals are a royalty awarded to actors on a show when the company sells it into syndication, allowing other networks to play re-runs on their channels. The decrease in these residuals harshly impacts the constant flow of revenue actors were used to seeing. The Guild also looks to fight against the rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence by entertainment companies. There have been many instances where studios use Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) to compose images of famous stars who are not there to film. AI has immense ramifications regarding the unauthorized use of actors' likenesses in media. Even so far back as 1989, actor Crispin Glover sued the producers of Back to the Future: Part II for using a face mold on another actor to recreate his image without consent. Producers did so after he declined to participate in the blockbuster sequel [5]. AI technology now allows studios to actively re-create the persona of big celebrity stars without paying them. In Zacchini v. Scripps-Howard Broadcasting Co., 433 U.S. 562 (1977) [6], the Supreme Court affirmed an entertainer's right to publicity when an Ohio TV station broadcasted Zacchini's cannonball act. The Court argued that broadcasting such a performance hinders the economic value of seeing said performance live. Using actors' likenesses in films they don't actually appear in depreciates the value of their faces and work when they receive no publicity for involvement.
These are just some of the reasons America's writers and actors are currently on strike. History shows they have every legal right to do so. They and executives will continue to play hardball until one gives in to demands and both can agree upon a new CBA. The implications of such are drastic and go beyond the production of the average viewer's entertainment. The changing times and rampant new technology implicate many legal questions for one to answer. How this strike plays out is currently unknown, but its outcome will be interesting to watch.

Listen to free jazz at Columbus Circle this fall in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. After a Tony-winning performance as Aaron Burr in the Broadway hit musical Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. is ready to take on the world. His new album, the self-titled Leslie Odom Jr. — just released on S-Curve Records — puts his beautiful vocal range on display. Songs range from show tunes to jazz classics. On September 6, Odom will appear at Sessions at the Circle, a free concert series at The Shops at Columbus Circle. Odom sat down with us to talk about jazz, his inspirations, and more.
