The Untold Legend of the Batman #1 released in June 30th to July 1st in 1980 by writer Len Wien, artists John Byrne and Jim Aparo, colourist Glynis Wein and Letterer John Costanza.
Also, don’t be fooled this is indeed Bruce as Robin despite him and Dick looking identical. XD This is why, I make jokes in my head about them being mistaken as being actual biological father/son by accident because of this ha ha.
Anyway, I do think it is kind of important to keep in mind when reading pre crisis and Bronze Age comics in general. Is that Bruce was technically the first Robin here and Dick main inspiration is Robin Hood and not the bird for the Bronze Age comics at the very least.
I will also say this comic is not beating my thoughts on Batman and Robin having some themes of legacy to it. With how the first Batman was Bruce’s father well technically not because it was just a costume for a charity costume party. Regardless of the technicality of it Bruce still inherits his father’s short legacy as Batman in a way. Just like how Dick is inheriting Bruce’s short summer legacy as Robin. I don’t know I just think that’s neat is all.
This story themes of legacy does tie quite nicely into the early to later 80s Batman comics. Notable the Robin comic stories with Dick’s struggles to find his place in the world and to get out of his mentor/second father’s shadow.
Quick bonus fun fact did you know this isn’t the first time Bruce was written to be the first Robin. In fact this comic is kind of a callback to Detective Comics #226 story When Batman Was Robin written by Edmond Hamilton, art by Dick Sprang and Charles Paris which was released on December 10th 1955.
