Blue Jays Suffer Doubleheader Sweep April 28
Greetings everyone The Cardinals series....it was looking great. Tuesday night the Bandwagon was a buzz with the news that Russell Martin was starting at 3B. Later in the 7th inning Chris Coghlan, facing certain out at the plate, opts for a back flip over St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and lands hand and head on the plate. Wild play! and it is seen on every highlight reel in the free world. Roberto Osuna blows his second save of the season in the St. Louis 9th and it took a Marcus Stroman pinch hit double (Stroman pinch hit for Jason Grilli), and a Cardinals throwing error to score Stroman with the go ahead run in the T11. The Cardinals made four errors in the game, allowing the Jays to score two unearned runs in the 9th and one in the 11th. It was a wild one and Toronto wins! What a night! That game was expected by all the Blue Jay faithful to mark the "turning point" of the season. Tuesday's win was all for not. In Game One of Two this Thursday the Blues Jaysblew a 4-0, 7th inning lead and Roberto Osuna couldn't save a two run lead in the 9th inning. Gibby over managed in the 11th by bringing in the Gas Can, JP Howell, when Ryan Tepera got into a little do-do. Howell ends up throwing Matt Carpenter a Grand Slam pitch that won it for the Cardinals who were all but dead in the B7. April 27 may be the turning point, turning the wrong way! Jays now 6-15. Yikes! This game hurt. All the momentum from Tuesday's circus win is wiped out by a bad bullpen, and too many men left in scoring position. Osuna Struggles: Between games there were a number of messages received on the Bandwagon. One from Janice Reeves. Many of you may not know Janice. Ms Reeves is a Maritimer, who grew up with the Montreal Canadians and she is a huge Blue Jays Fan spending the last two springs in Dunedin and many summer evenings at the RC. She is pretty good soft ball player too! Janice also had the misfortune of having her office at Ford Credit next to mine. So we often discussed the Jays and we would always joke about The Punk. I would say The Punk needed to be on a PEP (Performance Enhancement Plan). Tonight Janice messages me in the 10th inning and says "Osuna pre-PEP". She is right about Osuna's Performance. Management needs to address it! Something is not right with The Mexican. Bruce Malloch messaged from the bandwagon wondering if Osuna is still injured. I don't think he is injured. Osuna's velocity is inconsistent and I suspect he may be telegraphing his pitches. But he is blowing just about every save opportunity he has right now. That's a problem. Gibby, listen to Reeves, Osuna needs a Performance Enhancement Plan! Game 2 I turn on the second game. It's the third inning, 4-0 St. Louis. I message Big Larr and say, "I didn't know that MLB allowed teams to carry forward walk off grand slams into the second game of a double header." 4-0 St Louis and Russell Martin is not playing 3B nor is Jose Bautista in RF. Both start on the bench, Martin's name never shows up in the boxscore (at dinner with PK perhaps?) and Joey Bats pinch hits for Coghlan in the 7th and plays 3B. Salt strike out twice, although he gets a walk and drops his Batting Average to .042 ( one hit in 24 at bats) Starter Case Lawrence gave up two more runs before he was done for the night after 5 innings. Cool Hand Loup came in and tried to give St. Louis more runs, he loaded the bases in the 6th and somehow got out of it. His second Inning was very clean. Jays score all their runs in one inning, the 5th, including a three run HR by Edwin's replacement. Danny Barnes was the 26th man for this game. He pitched a scoreless B8th. JP Howell and Roberto Osuna were rumoured to be sitting on the team bus to the airport most of the second game......(rumour) .
Bandwagon When Manager John Gibbons signed his two year extension, he must have agreed to a clause that says he has to use shit relievers and never win close games. Things are very dark at this time. Today's two losses were a team deflater....and when you concede the fact that Tuesday's win was because St. Louis committed four errors ...the Jays could be 5-17.....As I said at the start of the 16 games in 16 days, we need to get through to Wednesday May 3 (Tampa and New York) and see what we have. The Blues Jays have to start winning and win against American League East teams. With Tulowitzki, Donaldson, Sanchez and Happ on the DL , and weak hitting from Travis (.129) Bautista (.163) , Pearce (.163) and Martin(.190) this team is not about to go on a winning streak. The Blues Jays are built like, and play like, a 6-16 (.273 winning percentage) team. Tonight Toronto is 9.0 games behind first place Baltimore and last of all 30 teams in MLB baseball.
In Baseball, just when you think all is lost, stuff happens. I know it's not pretty but let's see where it goes by next Wednesday. So What is it? The Best Is Yet to Come or The Best Has Come and Gone ...Time will tell More Later Doug
