#Brooklyn United Churches
Text
On Sep. 17, about 60 Haitians and their supporters, as well as New York City Councilwomen Mercedes Narcisse and Farah Louis, rallied in front of St. Jerome Catholic Church at the corner of Nostrand and Newkirk Avenues in Brooklyn, NY. Organized by Children for Change International, the rally was titled “Immigrants United Against Hate.”
The largest mobilization is planned for Sep. 18 at the Nassau Coliseum at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, NY on Long Island, where Trump will be holding a campaign rally. The Haitians, other immigrants, and their supporters will hold a  counter-demonstration that will gather at 3 p.m. at 1110 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, at the corner of Uniondale Avenue.
Meanwhile, in Haiti, politicians and the corrupt bourgeoisie are doing everything to maintain their class privileges and keep the popular masses in the most abject misery. This is our best opportunity to organize ourselves to be better able to respond to these false allegations which, once again, besmirch our dignity and belittle us like old clothes worn out by misery. They try to make us forget our ancestors’ glorious anti-colonialist and anti-slavery struggles.

Architectural Finds, 06/25/2023
Today's walk was short, I was just going in to DoBro to get some things from target but of course I had to stop and take some pictures along the way. Here are some architectural highlights from the walk there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First were these row-houses along Fulton St, and this cool corner window aspect that the end house had.
Built 1882.
Located at 664-674 Fulton St these seemed like they were all the same architect save for the third house in at 668 that looked like it been rebuilt at some point or maybe covered with a brick facade.
You can see some of the rusting from the old Cast-Iron facade that was cutting edge technology in the day in the second picture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another row of houses that caught my eye were this row of brownstones with their beautiful ornamentation around the door frames. This is right around the corner at 109-117 S Elliot Pl.
I have no way of knowing if they were all built by the same owners originally as I cant seem to find any records for them online :/, but they were likely built around the turn of the last century 1890-1910 when this style of building was commonly constructed. It was likely that they were built by separate owners/architects, as their ornamental stone decorations aren't all exactly the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on, A CHURCH! That's right I love a good ornate church and this one surely delivered. Just look at that gothic stone articulation above the entrance! Its so organic looking, it sends shivers down my spine just looking at it and I want to sink my teeth into it all in one.
Built in 1931 to the tune of the Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church, and today it sits abandoned, boarded up, and full of black mold.
The overall shape of the building is so interesting it has so much going on with its MASSIVE brick pillar motifs, likely intended to vertically gesture up toward the creator.
One source describes it as "Gothic restyled in modern dress, an exercise in massing brick and tan terracotta that might be called cubistic Art Moderne."
Someone with more theological architectural background could go further in depth than I can on it I'm sure, but it's always exciting to see the passionate attention to detail that a good cathedral has in it's architecture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next I don't know if I love this one but I just wanted to shout it out as having a BIG clock face! Like that thing is so high upppp it must be 100 feet in diameter!
Without even looking it up I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say this is maybe Brooklyn City Hall, or another government building??? It resembles the thing they're doing in all of the governing buildings I've seen up in Albany.
I don't particularly like this architectural style its boring and chunky in my opinion, but I have to say its not the ugliest thing I've seen. I respect the sense of radial symmetry its upper terraces and flanks suggest, and cmon you cant knock that clock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second to last, we have this red & black beauty. Love the Greek-Revival pediments on each wing of the building as well as the renaissance revival inclusions in the carved cords/ribbons hanging in between the pilasters.
After some research, this seems to be an old Schoolhouse built in 1892 that has unfortunately since been absorbed by the ultra-modern townhouse on the end of the street at 81 Hanson Pl and transformed into a massive painting studio/home by painter David Salle. Wish I could find more info on the original schoolhouse tho :/
(Second photo ripped from google images)
Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTION: Caught this Mansard Roof moment on my way into the subway station and oof, tug at my heartstrings this is cute.
Across the street from the dream studio/abomination this guy sits pretty at 83 Hanson Pl and is the only brownstone on the block with a cute hat (mansard roof).

Carolina packages Cheerios at night in a factory. She is 15.
Wander starts looking for day-labor jobs before sunrise. He is 13.

Oscar Lopez, a ninth grader, works overnight at a sawmill in South Dakota. On this day, he skipped school to sleep after a 14-hour shift.

Children being processed by the U.S. Border Patrol in Roma, Texas. In the past two years alone, 250,000 unaccompanied minors have come into the country.

Cristian, 14, has been working in construction in North Miami for two years instead of going to school. Federal law bars minors from a long list of such jobs.

A detention site in the Rio Grande Valley in March 2021. The Biden administration has faced pressure to move unaccompanied children through the system quickly.

Migrant children were among the day laborers who gathered on a school day in Homestead, Fla., to find roofing, landscaping or other work.

From left: Oscar Nambo Dominguez, 16, was crushed last year under an earthmover near Atlanta. Edwin Ajacalon, 14, was hit by a car while delivering food on a bike in Brooklyn. Juan Mauricio Ortiz, 15, died on his first day of work for an Alabama roofing company when he fell about 50 feet.
Tumblr media
Young workers exited an overnight cleaning shift last October at a JBS pork plant in Worthington, Minn. Their employer, a sanitation company, was later fined for violating child labor laws
Tumblr media
Carolina Yoc, back right, worked on math problems after a night shift at a Grand Rapids food plant. The 13-year-old girl sitting next to her said she also worked nights at a factory.
It has been a little more than a year since Carolina left Guatemala, and she has started to make some friends. She and another girl who works at Hearthside have necklaces that fit together, each strung with half a heart. When she has time, she posts selfies online decorated with smiley faces and flowers.
Mostly, though, she keeps to herself. Her teachers do not know many details about her journey to the border. When the topic came up at school recently, Carolina began sobbing and would not say why.
After a week of 17-hour days, she sat at home one night with her aunt and considered her life in the United States. The long nights. The stress about money. “I didn’t have expectations about what life would be like here,” she said, “but it’s not what I imagined.”
She was holding a debit card given to her by a staffing agency, which paid her Hearthside salary this way so she did not have to cash checks. Carolina turned it over and over in her palm as her aunt looked on.
“I know you get sad,” Ms. Ramirez said.
Carolina looked down. She wanted to continue going to school to learn English, but she woke up most mornings with a clenched stomach and kept staying home sick. Some of her ninth grade classmates had already dropped out. The 16-year-old boy she sat next to in math class, Cristian Lopez, had left school to work overtime at Hearthside.
Tumblr media
Cristian lived a few minutes away, in a bare two-room apartment he shared with his uncle and 12-year-old sister, Jennifer.
His sister did not go to school either, and they had spent the day bickering in their room. Now night had fallen and they were eating Froot Loops for dinner. The heat was off, so they wore winter jackets. In an interview from Guatemala, their mother, Isabel Lopez, cried as she explained that she had tried to join her children in the United States last year but was turned back at the border.
Cristian had given his uncle some of the money he earned making Chewy bars, but his uncle believed it was not enough. He had said he would like Jennifer to start working at the factory as well, and offered to take her to apply himself.
Cristian said he had recently called the H.H.S. hotline. He hoped the government would send someone to check on him and his sister, but he had not heard back. He did not think he would call again.

Happy Birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈 🎁 🎊 To You
The  Newest Young Jewish ✡ American SNL Comedian, Actor & Writer In The Entertainment Industry Today Of The 21st Century
Peter Michael Davidson was born in New York City's Staten Island borough on November 16, 1993, the son of Amy (née Waters) and Scott Matthew Davidson. His father was a New York City firefighter for Ladder 118 who died in service during the September 11, 2001 attacks, along with the rest of his unit. He was last seen running up the stairs of the Marriott World Trade Center just before the building was destroyed when the Twin Towers collapsed. His Requiem Mass was held at St. Clare's Catholic Church in Great Kills, Staten Island. Davidson, then aged seven, was profoundly affected by the loss. He told The New York Times that it was "overwhelming" and that he later acted out in school as a result of the trauma, at one point ripping his hair out until he was bald. In October 2016, he revealed on The Breakfast Club morning radio show that he struggled with suicidal thoughts when he was younger and that the music of Kid Cudi saved his life.
He is an American comedian, actor, and writer. He started standup in 2013 before being hired as cast member on the NBC late-night sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live for eight seasons from 2014 to 2022.
Davidson began his career in the early 2010s with minor guest roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Friends of the People, Guy Code, and Wild 'n Out. He released his comedy specials Pete Davidson: SMD (2016) and Pete Davidson: Alive from New York (2020).
Davidson starred and executive produced the comedy film Big Time Adolescence (2019), and co-wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film The King of Staten Island (2020), and the Peacock series Bupkis (2023). He continued acting in films such as The Suicide Squad (2021), Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022), and Meet Cute (2022).

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! Think of this post as a bountiful Thanksgiving table, a cornucopia of treats on which to feast, and we’re not just talking turkey! The first spot is the old Zorn’s building in Bethpage, New York. Zorn’s has provided the centerpiece of many a Long Island Thanksgiving table since 1940. My photo was taken in 2017, and this building was since razed for a car dealership. Zorn’s moved next door and took the neon sign with it, thankfully. Next up is a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, called the Turkey’s Nest Tavern. I took this curious photo – notice the sign the woman is holding – while running the New York City Marathon in 2019. I smiled, but not because I was guilty of said offense! Our third stop is the shuttered Wishbone Fried Chicken in Tifton, Georgia. Lots of folks today will be snapping wishbones and hoping to get the bigger part – may your wish come true, regardless! Next up is the Pilgrim’s Pride Motel in Wildwood, New Jersey. There are two bushes flanking the sign, so photographing it was a challenge, one I was glad to accept. I love this time-traveling pilgrim. He’s dressed for the 1670s, but there’s something about him that’s more 1970s. Now, one of the first things I do on Thanksgiving Day is play “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie. The 1967 song is forever tied with Thanksgiving Day. The Cliff Notes? Two years earlier, Guthrie was arrested for illegally dumping garbage from a dinner he’d shared with his pal, Alice Brock, at this church outside Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where she lived. He wrote a song about it, and the rest is history. Today it’s the Guthrie Center, complete with a nod to the red VW Microbus in the lyrics, parked right outside. Finally, and soon enough, it will be time to eat! I present five signs with clear instructions to do just that: Clifton, New Jersey’s Tick Tock Diner advises eating heavy: Al’s Hamburgers in Green Bay, Wisconsin, gets right to the point; a shuttered restaurant in Cabazon, California, no longer delivers what it promises; Bill Johnson’s had the right idea for the holiday in Mesa, Arizona; and finally, an “Ideal” way to end this post, in Minneapolis. #retrologist (at United States of America) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClWghUDLmH7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

[ HEADSHOT!     HEADSHOT! ]
Frank Castle does not believe in vampires. In fact, given a chance, he will steadfastly and stubbornly scoff at and refute the existence of something so ridiculous to him.
This is a man of the belief that those mythical creatures of the night are confined to fiction in all it's many forms-- the silver screen, the written word, the drawn pages of comic books and graphic novels. They're the kind of thing you save for an evening of Netflix and chilling; all the better for wrapping an arm around your significant other and nibbling on their neck a little to get the evening going spicy.
The long and short of it is that he simply has no cause to believe in them as real beings that walk among us, in spite of the fact that he inhabits a very strange world that only seems to get stranger by the day. Mind you, this is a man who has helped to bring two children into the world. That had to include all the usual appointments-- admittedly, because of his service, only some of which he was there for. Still, those check-ups and ultrasounds and blood-test filled days were bound to feature questions around his and his wife's medical history. Neither of them are carriers of the much discussed X-GENE-- something that is endlessly more real to him and easier to parse and accept. That's SCIENCE. It's in the vein of passing down hair and eye colors, bum tickers, and all kinds of other physical family baggage.
As far as he knows, you can't just pass down a case of the sparkles.
Hell-- he'd more seriously consider a case of demonic possession before he ever took seriously a flash of fangs and a confession of being beautifully undying. He's Catholic like that, even when it's been an eon since setting foot inside a church. Both cases would honestly make him suggest psychiatric help first, but the former. . . the former is close to home. He BELIEVES in the former. He KNOWS a thing or two about dark attachments of the soul.
But the Lord Ruthven shit? C'MOOON-- Polidori just had a bitter axe to grind against Byron. None of those dead guys are still prancing among us. Vampires make him think of Halloween, Hot Topic, eyeliner and My Chemical Romance band shirts with striped arm warmers. Scene kids and vampires are the same thing, right??
Now, from where does this bullheaded rejection spring? It's from the smallness of Frank's world. Truth be told, he's never been one for GRAND dreams. His were always local things-- even when they were as absurd as a child's glossy and romanticized desire to be a wiseguy in the style of Michael Corleone. Frank's world used to be Bayside, Queens to Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He never really made plans to leave it-- not by further than getting out of his parents' house and someday into his own. Such small sights were never set on the rest of the world beyond or what lived in it. His was a world of old school by-the-slice shops, creeping bodegas, car-fixing garages where he might someday work for the legit side of things.
Enlistment and eventual deployment only narrowed his world even further, despite being responsible for sending him into the cradle of civilzation. In that place all that mattered was putting one foot in front of the next, checking his corners, doing the job and surviving the day and the incompetence of the United States Marine Corps.
There were no vampires for him to meet in Iran, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
And afterwards? Afterwards there should only have been the smallness of HOME again. Of Maria tucked into his side, of Lisa held in his arms, of Junior at his knee.
Ain't that just the kicker though? After all that-- after all that happened to him, he could BE one of them. Maybe not beautiful, but definitely undying. Except he doesn't know that.
And still doesn't feel like he has any cause to BELIEVE.

Hi!! I love your prompts about Olek and Ling Yi so much!!! They are so cute and you write them so well. 😭💗 I keep thinking of those two and they have been stuck in my head ever since I watched 1899. I am surviving off crumbs from the show (sob I need more scenes of them together in S2) I was wondering what you think they would do on a Saturday where they both don’t have work? (Referring to a modern AU) I was also wondering if you’d think Olek or Ling Yi would get tattoos? and if so, what tattoos would they be? Also how do you think Olek would react if he saw Ling Yi in a pretty outfit? Or vice versa!
I am so sorry if I asked too many questions I just get so excited when talking about these two 😭😭 (You don’t have to answer btw!!! And again, I love your writing!!)
Thank you, Anon — that's very sweet of you to say! And your questions are great — I'll do my best to answer them!
If you're wondering what Olek and Ling Yi would do on their day off in 1899 New York, then I have some slightly sad news for you: it would be Sunday, not Saturday, because the weekend (as we know it) didn't exist in the United States until the early 20th century. When Olek and Ling Yi first showed up in Brooklyn, Olek got some pressure from his brother to go to church on Sunday, but once they moved back to lower Manhattan, Olek stopped going. (I mean, can we blame him? Early morning mass in Latin versus the prospect of sleeping in next to a very pretty girl? Not a hard call to make.) But after the sleeping in, I can see them making the most of the day by exploring the city, maybe catching a streetcar and walking through Central Park, and then heading down to the Bowery for a cheap dinner and a vaudeville show.
In modern-day New York, Saturdays are Olek's time to catch up on household chores (like laundry... he's got to keep those jackets clean) and Ling Yi wakes up early to talk to her mom in Hong Kong (just a small time difference of thirteen hours!). They normally stay over at Olek's apartment on Saturday night and sleep in the next morning (they do seem to enjoy that part, no matter the scenario), then go out for a late brunch on Sunday, or else stay in while Olek makes Polish apple pancakes.
As for tattoos, it's hard for me to see Olek getting one, but Ling Yi got a small one on her birthday a few years earlier (before she met Olek). Growing up, she had the nickname of "little bird," which she didn't like at all, but it inspired her to get a tattoo on her left shoulder blade: a bird in flight, escaping a cage. When Olek first saw it, he asked her what it meant, and her answer really stuck with him. It reminds him of the kind of man he wants to be around her: one who won't try to confine her or keep her in a box, but who will let her be free and true to herself.
How would Olek react when he saw Ling Yi in a pretty outfit? Probably the same way he reacts when he sees her in any outfit! (Oversized sweatshirt and leggings? He still thinks she looks amazing.) But it's true, when she really goes all out — bodycon dress and heels, eyeliner and red lipstick — he just about loses his damn mind. Ling Yi also can't get over how good Olek looks in a suit; he cleans up very well, let's just leave it at that.

Week 2 Artists
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Switzerland, Zimoun is an artist who likes to connect sound and architecture and a way to define a space. Each of the pieces above use cardboard and motors to create unique sounds in each space. The first creates an element of nature as the motors hit the boards, sounding like rain. You can move around it and it sounds like rain hitting a building. While the last one is more of a rumbling, like many soft footsteps. It's interesting that each are art made of cardboard (simple and seen in everyday life) in a heavily industrial/worked locations. A marble museum, concrete basement and a brick church. The shape is also a point of interest as the last two are uniform boxes, the first uses boards to intersect with each other creating a freeing element.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the Spirit of the City, it was created by the United Visual Artists in London. Each column are 9 feet tall rotating mirrors. They generate the image of towers in a city. The material allows the visitors to reflect on themselves and interact with the light of the sun, while the rotating element ensures that experiences if new and unique for each person. Almost like exploring a new place and looking at yourself differently due to the new experiences but also touching on the notion of an ever changing city.

NYC migrant accused in vicious beating of Times Square cops arrested again after he’s bailed out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A migrant accused of leading an assault on a pair of New York City police officers in Times Square earlier this year before being quickly released was arrested again for serial theft, according to media reports. Yohenry Brito, 24, of Venezuela, was arrested Tuesday for a pair of thefts at Sephora makeup stores in Manhattan, law enforcement sources told the New York Post. VIOLENT VENEZUELAN PRISON GANG INFILTRATING US, BECOMING MORE ORGANIZED AND BRAZEN: ‘MS-13 ON STEROIDS’One theft occurred in July in which Brito allegedly cut through security wires on display cases to steal fragrances. The other happened on Aug. 6, when he stole $1,358 worth of merchandise from store shelves before fleeing with an accomplice, police sources told The Post. The accomplice was not caught. “As we said from the beginning, the individuals who attacked our Times Square Unit brothers have zero respect for the law and can’t be trusted to remain on the street without causing more mayhem. We are glad that he is back behind bars,” Patrick Hendry, president of the NYC Police Benevolent Association, told the newspaper. Brito was previously arrested and released for at least three other thefts that occurred both before and after Times Square police gang assault. MIGRANT ACCUSED OF RAPING WOMAN AT KNIFEPOINT NEAR BEACH BOARDWALKHe was one of seven migrants seen kicking and punching the two officers on Jan. 27, prosecutors said. The migrants were told by the cops to move along a street when the violence began. Five of the accused migrants – Yorman Reveron, 24, Jhoan Boada, 22, Wilson Juarez, 21, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, and Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19 – were charged with assault on a police officer and obstructing governmental investigation and were released without bail.Boada was later exonerated after prosecutors determined he was not one of the men seen in the video.Brito was initially released with the other asylum seekers, but he was taken back into custody after a public outcry and ordered held on $15,000 cash or a $50,000 bond. At the time, he had two pending misdemeanor theft cases.MIGRANTS IN NYPD TIMES SQUARE ATTACK OFFERED PLEA DEALS, INCLUDING 1 JUST RE-ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALINGHowever, he was released back onto the street in February when Rev. Juan Ruiz, a minister at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, put up the $15,000 bond. “Our church is basically a sanctuary,” Ruiz told The Post at the time. “We assume that people are innocent until they are proven otherwise.”After his release, Brito was arrested for allegedly trying to steal children’s clothing and fragrances from Macy’s. “I am very tempted right now to put you in jail,” Judge Laura Ward said in Manhattan Criminal Court told Brito in court. “I am telling you right now, if I learn you are rearrested for anything at all between now and this case being finished, I will order a warrant, and I will place bail so high, you will not get out.””If you jaywalk, if you jump a turnstile, if you do anything at all and I have to issue a warrant, you will not see the light of day until this case is over,” she continued.Brito is now being held on $50,000 cash bond on the Times Square police assault because of the latest arrests.

About HAUNT:
Founded in 2017 as the solo project of Trevor William Church, HAUNT quickly became the face of the new wave of traditional heavy metal. Since the band's kickstart six years ago, the heavy metal titans have released eight studio albums and multiple extended plays. Dubbed a "prolific songwriter-shredder" by Rolling Stone, Church continues to champion what was once a bygone era of heavy metal. Their latest album, Dreamers, dropped March 1 via Church Recordings.
About SAVAGE MASTER:
One of the most exciting and electrifying bands in the occult metal scene, SAVAGE MASTER swiftly built an impressive canon of work by releasing two cult albums, an EP, and over-the-top live shows. Founded in 2013 by guitarist Adam Neal and vocalist Stacey Savage, the band was inspired by their love of heavy metal and horror. Shortly thereafter, Savage and her hooded henchmen began their assured ascent through the underground, touring nonstop across North America and Europe, playing festivals such as Keep It True, Hell Over Hammaburg, Legions of Metal, Frost and Fire, Ragnarokkr, Hell's Heroes, and many more, helping land their longstanding album deal with Shadow Kingdom Records.
