BROOK WATSON AND THE SHARK (1778) by JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY
The work is based on a true story that took place about 30 years ago. In this story, BROOK WATSON, then 14 years old, was working as a mate on a trading vessel in the West Indies when he decided to take off his heavy clothing and swim for a while.
Not long after entering the water, he was bitten by a shark. In this image, COPLEY imagines the moment Watson is saved, just in time, from being bitten for the third time. A closer look at the lower-left-hand corner reveals that his leg is already gone.
One reviewer at the ROYAL ACADEMY felt moved to recommend the painting for the "softness of coloring" and the "frightened appearance of the man assaulting the shark".
In addition to being one of the best examples of COPLEY'S ability to tell a dramatic story, adding nuances to each character through their facial expressions, the piece was also experimental for COPLEY.
Art historian BRYAN ZYGMONT has compared the many figures, most notably the harpooners, to works by RAPHAEL that COPLEY would have studied on a tour of ITALY. Others have drawn connections to 18th-century FRENCH painting.
Whatever COPLEY'S formal influences, the work was unlike anything he had produced till that point. It also signals one of COPLEY'S ambitions: to be accepted as a history painter which was then regarded as the noblest genre.

First two photos are Brooke (top) and Danny (bottom) together and then Avery and Cora in that order.
Cora was adopted a few days ago and I got the automated email today letting me know the remaining 3 were adopted, likely yesterday on black cat appreciation day. C: I don’t know if they went together, the email doesn’t say, so I asked and will let you all know when I get the response. Crossing my fingers they all went to the same home but even if only two stayed together that would make me very happy.
So thus ends my longest and largest foster to date. It was quite the experience, but I’m hoping later next week I can claim just a singleton or pair for my next foster.

"Born 11 September 1935, New York State Died 8 December 1996, Maryland
Ben Hewitt made four fine records for Mercury Records in the late fifties, then disappeared from view until he was tracked down, in 1983, by Colin Escott and Hank Davis, who were in the process of compiling a Bear Family LP of Ben's recordings. He is sometimes described as a Canadian artist, but though he did live close to the Canadian border for much of his life, he was in fact a US citizen.
Hewitt was born in 1935 in a one-room, dirt-floor log cabin on the Tuscarora Indian Reservation in New York State. He wanted a guitar from the time he was nine or ten and kept bugging his father who finally broke down when Ben was about 12 and bought him a ukelele. About a year later, he got his first guitar, a $12.50 Stella. Influenced by Elvis and Sun Records, Ben started performing in bars. For over 13 years he played at DeFazio's in Niagara Falls, NY. It was there that Hewitt was approached by one Julian Langford. Hewitt told Escott and Davis: "He looked exactly like Colonel Tom Parker. He was up from Florida working in construction. He asked us what we'd charge to do some demos for him. He thought of himself as a songwriter, but he had the same tune to everything. The lyrics were nothing to write home about either. He'd come to us week after week and sing us the latest song he'd written. For the hell of it, we said, ' We'll do it on one condition. You supply the booze. Plus you gotta pay 20 bucks apiece and rent the hall'. "
It was this Julian Langford who secured Hewitt a recording contract with Mercury in 1958. The sessions were held in New York City and produced by Clyde Otis. Four singles were released, 1959-60. Clyde Otis didn't want Langford's material (except for "Whirlwind Blues"), most of the Mercury sides are Ben's own compositions. Otis himself also contributed a song, co-written with Brook Benton, "I Ain't Givin' Up Nothin' (If I Can't Have Something From You)". Hewitt's version of this song is the original one ; there were later versions by Clyde McPhatter and Jimmy "Frenchy" Dee, with Mickey Gilley on piano.
Ben's records did not sell particularly well, but enough to secure him plenty of bookings through the Shaw Agency, where he was the only white artist. Ben soon got tired of touring and after a nasty incident with Julian Langford, which hurt his (Ben's) reputation at Mercury, he lost interest in making records. He did not record again until 1975, when he cut a country single ("Border City Call Girl") for Broadland Records in Toronto, which was leased to Shelby Singleton's Plantation label."

Spooky Reading Recommendations!
Death Overdue by Allison Brook
Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut, until she's offered a job as the head of programs at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major program is presented by a retired homicide detective who claims he knows who murdered a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies. The medical examiner reveals he was poisoned and Carrie becomes determined to discover who murdered Laura and the detective.
This is the first volume of "The Haunted Library Mysteries" series.
Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky
Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with her child. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six long days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged.
Weyward by Emilia Hart
I am a Weyward, and wild inside.
2019: Under cover of darkness, Kate flees London for ramshackle Weyward Cottage, inherited from a great aunt she barely remembers. With its tumbling ivy and overgrown garden, the cottage is worlds away from the abusive partner who tormented Kate. But she begins to suspect that her great aunt had a secret. One that lurks in the bones of the cottage, hidden ever since the witch-hunts of the 17th century.
1619: Altha is awaiting trial for the murder of a local farmer who was stampeded to death by his herd. As a girl, Altha’s mother taught her their magic, a kind not rooted in spell casting but in a deep knowledge of the natural world. But unusual women have always been deemed dangerous, and as the evidence for witchcraft is set out against Altha, she knows it will take all of her powers to maintain her freedom.
1942: As World War II rages, Violet is trapped in her family's grand, crumbling estate. Straitjacketed by societal convention, she longs for the robust education her brother receives - and for her mother, long deceased, who was rumored to have gone mad before her death. The only traces Violet has of her are a locket bearing the initial W and the word "weyward" scratched into the baseboard of her bedroom.
Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries, Emilia Hart's Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world.
Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May
On Crow Island, people whisper that real magic lurks just below the surface. But magic doesn't interest Annie Mason. Not after it stole her future. She's only on the island to settle her late father's estate and, hopefully, reconnect with her long-absent best friend, Beatrice. Yet Crow Island is brimming with temptation, and the most mesmerizing may be her enigmatic new neighbor. Mysterious and alluring, Emmeline Delacroix is a figure shadowed by rumors of witchcraft. Soon, Annie is drawn into a glittering, haunted world.

These are easy to fix but if you have trouble doing so, you can refer to my video here.

Vazquez's WO HR Helps Twins Take Series!
Astros 2 Twins 3 W-Duran (4-3) L-Hader (3-5)
The Minnesota Twins have played an entertaining series against the Astros this weekend. The Astros took the first game then the Twins evened the series yesterday. The rubber game was today and a close game ensued. The Astros started the scoring in the second as Jon Singleton singled and Jake Myers and Chas McCormick walked. Cesar Salazar hit a sac fly to left and Jose Altuve hit a run-scoring single to left. This put Houston up by two and Minnesota would answer in the bottom of the second. Byron Buxton lined a one-out single to right and Matt Wallner walked. Christian Vazquez hit an RBI single to left and the Twins pulled within a run after two frames. The Twins would get back to work in the fourth when Brooks Lee reached on an infield single. Matt Wallner singled and Christian Vazquez hit a grounder to third. Alex Bregman went to second base then Brooks Lee scored when Cesar Salazar couldn't hold onto the ball at home plate. This tied the game at four after four innings of play. Simeon Woods Richardson and Spencer Arigetthi settled down after that and restored order. The bullpens held up until the bottom of the ninth when Josh Hader entered the game. Christian Vazquez put together a nice at-bat then smacked a fastball that kept carrying out to left for a walk-off home run. The Twins took the series from the Astros in a dramatic way.
-Final Thoughts- Simeon Woods Richardson settled down after a rough second inning. He threw six solid innings and alowed two runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Josh Staumont had a perfect seventh, Griffin Jax fanned two in the eighth, and Jhoan Duran got in and out of trouble in the ninth. Byron Buxton, Brooks Lee, and Christian Vazquez led the way with two hits each. The Twins hit 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Carlos Correa exited the game after being hit in the hand by a pitch. X-Rays showed that there was no fracture. The Twins will head out for the final road trip of the first half. Chris Paddack should be activated and face Chris Flexen in Game 1 against the White Sox.
