73 years ago today, a young Rocco Francis Marchegiano, fought for the first time as a professional under the name ‘Rocky Mack’. Fellow local Massachusetts boxer Lee Epperson was the first in a long line of victims of the knockout power of the rugged and raw slugger who would become world famous as Rock Marciano - The Brockton Blockbuster. Epperson started strongly but in the third round a viscious uppercut from Rocky sent him through the ropes into next week. Epperson never fought again. Before Rocco became Rocky he had pursued a career in baseball, failing ironically because he couldn’t hit hard enough! Rocky Marciano would go on to compete from 1947 to 1955, and held the world heavyweight title from 1952 to 1956. He is the only heavyweight champion to have finished his career undefeated. Rocky Marciano, un mito di origine abruzzese

Pugile statunitense, Rocky Marciano nasce a Brockton, nel Massachusetts, il 1° settembre 1923, registrato come Rocco Francis Marchegiano, figlio di italiani: papà Pierino (che all’anagrafe si chiama in realtà Querino) era arrivato negli Stati Uniti nel 1912, proveniente da Ripa Teatina, in Abruzzo (provincia di Chieti) mentre mamma Pasqualina Picciuto è di Benevento, emigrata negli States nel 1916. Il giovane Rocco conosce il pugilato alla soglia dei 20 anni, nell’esercito americano. Da dilettante è noto come “Rocky Mack”, raccogliendo 9 vittorie e 4 sconfitte: già impressiona per la violenza del suo pugno, ma è tecnicamente impreciso e disordinato. Al debutto, nel 1946, viene squalificato per una ginocchiata all’avversario. Nel 1947 passa professionista e in breve tempo diventa per tutti Rocky Marciano.

Peso massimo dal destro micidiale (che lo spesso pugile ribattezza “Suzie Q”), coraggioso, incredibilmente resistente ai colpi degli avversari, Rocky Marciano conserva qualche pecca tecnico-stilistica durante tutta la sua pur straordinaria carriera. Alto 1,79 e con un peso forma tra gli 83 e gli 88 chili, il campione italo-americano spesso parte piano durante i match, studia l’avversario, incassa qualche colpo per poi prendere l’iniziativa e annientare chiunque ha di fronte. La sua immacolata carriera da professionista, che si sviluppa tra il 1947 e il 1955, conta 49 vittorie in altrettanti incontri, con 43 successi per ko (11 al primo round). Nei suoi primi 16 match nessun avversario riesce ad arrivare in piedi all’ultima ripresa: raccoglie nove vittorie al primo round, due al secondo, quattro al terzo e una al quinto; il primo a non andare al tappeto è Don Mogard, al 17° match, il 23 maggio 1949. Rocky, “roccioso”, è l’appellativo perfetto per lui: «È il pugile più irruento che abbia mai incontrato, il numero delle riprese non conta, ha il fiato di un bisonte» dice di lui il fuoriclasse Joe Louis, sconfitto da Marciano per ko tecnico nel 1951. «Ho battuto tutti i miei avversari senza avere nulla di eccezionale – le sue parole, piene di modestia, a Miami nel 1964 in occasione della prima sfida tra Ali e Liston – ho avuto le braccia più corte di tutti i pesi massimi della storia, ma le ho fatte lavorare duro».

Le drammatiche battaglie per il titolo mondiale

Rocky Marciano conquista il titolo mondiale dei pesi massimi il 23 settembre 1952 a Philadelphia, battendo Joe Walcott nell’incontro più drammatico ed emblematico della sua carriera: il campione di Brockton va al tappeto alla prima ripresa, incassa colpi a ripetizione ed è in svantaggio ai punti quando il suo destro, al 13° round, mette al tappeto l’avversario. La rivincita, otto mesi dopo, si chiude in appena 2 minuti e 25 secondi a favore di Marciano. Prova a togliergli il titolo, per due volte, anche “il cobra di Cincinnati” Ezzard Charles, che nel 1954 prima resiste per 15 riprese, perdendo ai punti, e poi va ko dopo 8 round nella rivincita. Marciano conclude le due sfide in trionfo nonostante alcune ferite, che gli fanno rischiare il ko tecnico. L’ultimo incontro del campione americano è datato 21 settembre 1955, contro Archie Moore, con il titolo mondiale in palio. Allo Yankee Stadium di New York, davanti a 61.574 spettatori, Marciano va al tappeto al secondo round, per poi replicare con quattro knock-down prima del ko alla nona ripresa. Pochi mesi dopo, il 27 aprile 1956, ufficializza l’addio alla boxe, prima di compiere i 33 anni: «Per essere un fighter ho combattuto troppo», spiega, nonostante sia ancora campione del mondo in carica dei pesi massimi.

Nonostante le numerose e ricchissime offerte che gli arrivano nel corso degli anni, Marciano sceglie di non tornare mai più sul ring per non offuscare il suo mito di campione imbattuto. Nella storia del pugilato soltanto Floyd Mayweather Jr ha fatto meglio di lui, chiudendo la sua carriera nel 2017 con 50 vittorie in altrettanti match. Dopo l’addio ai combattimenti Marciano resta nel mondo del pugilato: partecipa a manifestazioni, premi e si fa vedere spesso a bordo ring in occasione di incontri importanti. A 45 anni si rimette in forma per girare un film che lo mette di fronte virtualmente a Muhammad Ali, ma un terribile destino lo attende: il 31 agosto 1969, alla vigilia del suo quarantaseiesimo compleanno, muore in un incidente aereo in volo da Chicago verso Des Moines, capitale dell’Iowa. Sale su un piccolo Cessna 172 alle 18, nonostante il tempo minaccioso, e poco dopo le 20 il velivolo si schianta contro una quercia, in un campo di grano, a causa delle condizioni atmosferiche. Oltre a Marciano muoiono il 37enne pilota Glenn Belz, impresario edile con scarsa esperienza in volo di notte, e Frankie Farrell, assicuratore di 23 anni. Il corpo dell’ex campione resta imprigionato nella carcassa dell’aeroplano mentre gli altri due compagni di viaggio vengono ritrovati senza vita ad alcuni metri dal velivolo, sbalzati fuori nell’urto. Marciano lascia la moglie Barbara Cousins (che morirà di cancro nel 1974) e i figli Mary Ann e Rocco Kevin.

Le origini italiane di Rocky Marciano

Da decenni Ripa Teatina, paese abruzzese di origine del padre di Marciano, celebra e ricorda il campione italoamericano. Dal 2005 è stato istituito anche un premio Rocky Marciano, riservato a personaggi e giornalisti del mondo dello sport. Sabato 31 agosto 2019, in occasione dei cinquant’anni dalla scomparsa del pugile, nella sala polivalente del Comune di Ripa Teatina andrà in scena “Rocky Marciano, un campione a bordo ring”, spettacolo teatrale che narra le imprese sportive del campione, ma anche la sua vita privata di bravo padre di famiglia.
