Stranger Of Paradise. Final Fantasy and the Emotions that Media can bring me.

Stranger of Paradise came out and god I love it. I have not played a minute of it but have instead watched as many lets plays and streams and clips as I could to absorb the thing through cultural osmosis. To sum it up, my brain has connected this thing like a parasitic fungus to my neuron generating flesh ball.  It has all that I want in a game/media. Batshit characters, a wondrous world of magic, a story that in all honesty may not be the best but damn if you don’t vibe with the thing.  But most of all, what I love about it, is its sincerity.

Jack Garland is everything a man should be. No, not in the way that he should have the grill out at all times and he should repress his emotions into a black hole toxicity.  Instead, what I see from him is someone beyond his one track mind of chaos. Instead of a simple yellow brick mode, he is more of a square block of things that make up the one true Jack Garland. While the story goes on and you certainly see his dedication to killing Chaos and anything Chaos related, he has subtle joys in what he does and who he hangs with.  The man doesn’t care who you are long as you hate Chaos with him and he will support you to the end. There is a scene in which Jed seems put off by Jack’s response to his warning’s in which he clarifies that he’s “just like that.” This is a man who cares for his allies and someone who in someway can understand that his lack of a proper personality and realistic goal can be off-putting. But he appreciates the people who have stuck by his side, given him a life of purpose outside of just Chaos hunting. Jack Garland is a man who while he doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve, you can certainly hear it beat.

Around the end of the game, Jed,Neon,Ash,and Sophia go on to try and force Jack into killing them. Prior to this,Princess Sophia who was an important figure to Jack had died as well. Through each and every moment of losing his friends either by Chaos’ hands or by his own, you see just how much he cares and how much it hurts. Your Chaos hunter is mid 2000′s video game protagonist but when the emotional hit the game wants finally comes in to strike, you know its there. From each and every deathblow he puts onto his former allies, there is a constant refrain of “just stop.” The voice work by Mocean is amazing as you hear the tightening, as you feel the stress and confusion work through J.G.  There’s no lack of some thread connecting the party and while you may not have explored their characters to the fullest, you certainly see just how much it hurts you inside to see this man ache.  So many friends lost to his hunt just to realize that it was the higher powers who sent him that were the cause of this madness. Chaos is brought upon in natural world, but also by the higher powers when they neglect to fix their own issues.

Why do I care for this game in a way that may seem unearned? In all likely hood, its a mediocre Nioh that people will simply remember as it releases in collection after collection in an anniversary bundle. The answer to that is simply because it doesn’t stop. It knows what it is, and it yells it out. Subtext is for cowards when you can tattoo your message across your forehead. It is for that reason that I love it. The world these days has found itself past simple skewing  of tropes. It has proceeded beyond satire and mockery to the point where everything that is made must poke holes into its frame work to get the attention of its viewers. Stranger of Paradise may have that same awareness of the absurdity of its plot but it does not allow that to kneecap what it is. It is emotion, it is the story of an angry man who wants one thing and one thing only. It is of the bros and broettes who help him on his mission. Paradise is not the mockery of the statues nor of leaders who build their inane contraptions. Paradise is truly where you make what you love and you acknowledge that thought that love is flawed and even weak in certain areas, you will hold onto that love with everything you have.

title screens are as common as common comes with video games, their almost guaranteed to be the first thing a player sees and sets the mood for the game your about to play, here’s ten of them now

hollow knight is incredibly simple but incredibly affective with it’s opening screen, the title appears in a dark void with a bluish glow surrounds it as a sombre track plays in the background, this atmosphere perfectly embodies hollow knights atmosphere and story beats, the games setting in a fallen kingdom where it’s passed on resident's are forced to be flesh puppets thanks to the powers of a sun deity as the kingdom they once called home further falls into darkness is pretty depressing with characters who have kept their minds till now either losing it thanks to the infection or even outside means, however the game is still left with a shining light of hope and whimsy that makes the player all the more endeared to these characters who remain.

on a lighter note hat in time, unlike the previous entry hat in time almost always keeps to the upbeat side of things, even it’s resident spooky worlds main big bad is a wisecracking ghost who’s near impossible to hate cause of how fun his personality is, as such the game embodies this fun loving nature with a screen of it’s world as the many goofy and lovable characters you meet fly around in orbit 

as much of a meme as among us is it’s title  greatly embodies the games tone, with the goofy and colourful crewmates floating in space while this foreboding sci fy theme plays in the back almost like the games saying “wow these little space fellas sure are silly.....but don’t forget that anyone of them could be a shapeshifting parasite in disguise who wants nothing more than to eviscerate you and turn you and your comrades on each other” basically 2 very contrasting tones that surprisingly both fit the game very well!

bendy and the ink machine despite it’s titles simplicity embodies everything revolving it’s games tone perfectly, the haunting violins playing in the background as the player face to face with a worn old picture of the ink demon itself, showing that his hey day as an icon is long behind him and that there may be something sinister lying under that perfect smile of his.

sonic generations title is simple but also does a good job in showing what it’s all about, the blue blur of the past and present teaming up for a multilevel celebration of sonics past present and looking brightly into his future.....even if the games that came after weren’t so great (except mania that was good)

the comical duo and dubiously named freelance police title in their first telltale title sam and max:save the world, the games title perfectly shows off the games plot of the manic duo having to solve the cases of odd hypnotism happenings with a screen showing a hypnotic swirl as a string of items collected during the chapters strewn about decorate the scene, also a mirage of gunshots that if you look closely kinda look like max and that’s a cute touch 

luigi’s mansion immediately gives itself a standout from it’s fellow mario games for 2 reasons 

1. his little but taller bro luigi takes the starring role in this game cube classic, this was really luigi’s first big time in the spotlight in the franchise.

2.the tone is surprisingly ominous for a mario game, the spooky mansion being shrouded in darkness gives this game so much more atmosphere than the usual fair for the series 

portal 2′s title is honestly the most technically impressive as it frequently changes depending on where you are in the story meaning it can thematically keep pace for where the player is in the story

I don’t think I need to put as much explanation into these next few as not only is this probably getting tired to read but it’s also getting repetitive to write as well 

PVS’s title is heavily stylised and well crafted and basically gets the dynamic of the game across in a single image,  sentient vegetation and flora defend lawn from brain hungry zombies, moving on 

Minecraft's is pretty simple but solid with a background of some type showing a biome in the game with a randomly generated little quote every time you load up the game, simple but cute

SA2 battle title screen is solid as it shows off great 2D art of all 6 of the games playable cast which allows the player to get accustom to their initial personality through the artwork shown on screen.
