All The Kitties
A/N: This is my entry into @stunudo‘s themed writing exchange. Mine and @captainreid‘s theme was amity, a friendly relationship, which through things like Divergent has become widely accepted as another word for general kindness also. @captainreid assigned me a Penelope x Reader where they meet at a charity event and become besties! Basically this is the fluffiest, nicest thing I could imagine with the nicest character ever in existence.
Emily got Sergio from City Kitties in the middle of DC. Sergio was the best cat ever. Ergo, Penelope needed to give back to the amazing shelter that saved her godcat from an early and undeserved grave.
Today was the charity’s annual Pets 4 Paws event where those seeking to adopt, as well as donors, would come to greet some of the recently saved felines, give them a little love which they’d been sorely lacking, and enter a couple of raffles, big and small; all of the proceeds went to the organization so they could continue to rescue beautiful little kittens and cats from all over the DC area.
For the past three years, Penelope had helped during adoption events and charity events like this one, but this one was her favorite. She got to hold all the kittens she wanted. “Okay, goodbye my babies,” she said to Maxine, Stuart and Sergio, whom she was babysitting while Emily was away. “I’m going to this charity event and I’m not going to bring home a brother or sister for you.” Maxine gave her a look. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m not. I swear.” The first year was fine, but Maxine and Stuart came from the previous years’ events. She couldn’t get a third cat. Nope. It wasn’t gonna happen.
“Melanie, how are you?!” Garcia asked as she approached the organizer of the event. “It’s been too long.”
“Penelope! Thank you so much for coming. We always appreciate your help.” Melanie’s smile could light up the room. Between the two of them they could power small cities. “Okay, so these are few volunteers that showed up to help,” she said, pointing to a small group of people. “This is Grae, Julissa, Y/N, Lou and Steven.”
“It’s no problem. I love doing it. Hello, all!” Penelope greeted. Her dress swayed as she approached the group of volunteers. The little watermelons on the bottom of the dress practically shining like the summer sun, her matching lipstick emphasizing the sheen of her perfectly coiffed blonde hair. She stretched out her hand to greet everyone and of course, started up a conversation about cats. How many did they all have and how many had they picked up from charity events?
Just 10 minutes later, the event started, donors walking in the doorway with pockets full of monies to give away and hearts filled with joy over the nearly 100 pouncing kittens and cats. “Oh, this isn’t going to be good for me,” Penelope heard from behind her. The volunteers were tasked with passing the animals to other people so the shelter could keep track of all the animals and make sure they weren’t overwhelmed by all the attention.
“What’s wrong?” Penelope asked. When she turned around, she saw Y/N melting at the sight of a little white, black and brown kitten. “She okay?”
Y/N looked up at her and she could see it. It’s exactly how she felt when she saw Maxine and Stuart. Y/N wanted this kitten. “You want to take her home, don’t you?”
“Yessssss,” she whined. “I have four cats already. I’m such a cat lady. I have no shame.”
Reluctantly, Y/N handed the kitten over to someone else so they could pet her, while she and Penelope started talking about their combined six cats, plus godcat Sergio. Y/N pulled out a picture of her four cats, two girls and two boys. “Oh my god, they’re so cute,” Penelope squealed. “What are their names?”
“From the left to the right, that’s Milo, Oliver, Ladybug, because of the spots, and Trixie. Ladybug was the only one I named because she was a kitten when I adopted her. No one else wanted her because she had some medical problems but she gave me the big, sad eyes and I fell in love.” For nearly an hour, Penelope and Y/N mindlessly handed the adoptable animals off to random donors and prospective adoptive parents as they talked about their babies.
“Sergio is my godson. He belongs to my friend Emily, who had to fake her own death for a while, so I had custody and I just came to love him so much that when she came back from the dead, I needed to share custody.”
Y/N blinked repeatedly, like a cartoon character - almost Wil-E Coyote-esque. “Say what now?”
“Oh it’s a long story. You wanna grab a bite after this? We can talk about the babies and I can tell you that very long, very weird story.” Y/N snorted and agreed; she was intrigued. For someone so sunshine-y, Penelope didn’t seem to be the kind to have those kinds of stories.
The rest of the charity event went off without a hitch. Out of the 100 animals up for adoption, they had at least as many applications. All of them wouldn’t go through of course, but it was more than successful. And although Y/N wanted to adopt the kitten, she had four already and realistically couldn’t take on more responsibility at the moment.
After cleaning up, Penelope searched around for her new friend, only to find her neck deep in a pile of kittens ready to go back into their spacious cages. “I thought we were gonna go grab some food?” Penelope laughed.
“But look at them, Penelope! Can I call you Penny? I have this overwhelming urge to call you Penny. Like I feel like we’ve known each other forever.” Being a cat person for some reason immediately fostered that kind of “I’ve-known-you-for-my-whole-life” connection. Y/N lifted a kitten in front of Penelope’s face, practically begging her to pay attention to it. “Meow, meow, meow.”
“You can totally call me Penny and seriously you must stop or I’m going to end up with another cat.”
“Exactly. That’s why I’m doing it. Because I already have four and this way I can live vicariously through you.”
Penelope smiled and opened the door, walking down the block towards a diner. “I feel like this is going to be the start of a beautiful friendship,” she laughed. “Like me and my chocolate thunder?”
“Who?”
“You’ll learn.”
Y/N giggled at her new friend’s seemingly very eccentric friend group. It seemed like they were going to be talking for a while. “Oh, Oh, do you want to come over after we eat and meet the kitties?” Y/N asked.
“Is that even a question?”

King want to continue have run this economy into the It Just Seems Like Somebody Definitely Touched My Drum Set T Shirt ditch work were slowly every since the Great Depression aliens more people living in poverty today than the day that Barack Obama with Hillary Clinton at his side the lowest 2014 and 20 honestly senator you can roll out the numbers and in the Sunnyside. This is so sad at the base already helps couple officials because already done couple of your fishing events so I’ll be able to show for you how we fishand other stuff so don’t worry but like for some reason this event is really hard like it’s impossible to catch any of these fishes either developers are to change the difficulty of these events or are there will be something else but like Sears is impossible I don’t understand what else can we do like you can see the most super quicklyand as you can see that yellow bubble just doesn’t move as fast as you can let either you have to guess what is going to go but when you guess it’s impossible it’s really just annoying like I would love to see a person would actually be able to get catch the fish here when is Mauricio like this like I’m just trying to guess that is gonna drop down in a drop down differently low while you so sad I wanted to get at least one fish for you here on the camera but it’s impossible to this associate I don’t want that one make you feel at this event is bad because this event is really good as you guess he thought something super easy but there are definitely easier fishes to catch like these ones are really arts molecular you to be super big because yes there is the size of fish will loftily sketch a lease want to show your giving up to give up at this pointand also forgot to mention for you I’m sometimes trying to catch this fish that look at this like it just got away whatever so I think every time I failed to catch a fish one fish disappears from the pond so there’s only limited amount of fish in the pond here hopefully will be able to catch at least oneand show for you but if you were to go to the topand I’ll try to catch fishes there from the topand I think in the northern locations you will need to have this armor otherwise you will freeze here to definitely that’s what I’m assuming you mean why would spawn in the northern so it looks like we will be able because this fish I want to scream to early but I think this fish was bit easier than the rest of us is doing all my pocket please like 90 done all know dude no game is getting away made like all my God how my supposed to catch it please it was almost done I’m going to catch you anyways like I’m ready I’m ready I’m focusing here hundred percent like the sun vocal instinct ultra instant you know what I’m talking about right the I’m clicking it as hard as it is almost done I was almost done made like what is going on but fishes that my fishing sharks here lay it’s impossible way it seriously impossible that what is going on dude I’m I give up I give up on the light I came I swear there are easier fishes to catch me this event is the hardest one but is seriously just annoying like this is not easy catching fish like it’s not easy but it’s not easy at all like I would love to see somebody catching it hopefully it will reduce the difficulty because I don’t understand like I’m just going to give up on this fish was just mutually video complaining about how hard it is to fish but I swear there are easier fishes to catch him enough to focus on whatever that officials got away ultra to go to the very very topand I’ll try to fish from over here maybe night looks bad but whatever list of fish from the side but it super but I don’t see anything like this spot but we will see maybe that will help out the case we have here another fish please tell me I will be able to catch it so it’s impossible this one we won’t catch this one as well it most quickly for your bubble I think you I mean I would be fine if we got kind of fish is a once in a while but like getting five fishes like that in a row that it’s like it’s impossible to search escape I did my best all I could in my weapon broke this mistake here another fishing rodand let’s try to fish once againand I think there’s a limit to fishes in the pond left or something so I mean okay Boomer we will see it will save your soul soon soon I’m to pull it once again please let me fish let me get at least one fishing vessel there is a chest right so from that Jesse can get the various items if I would if I will be able to catch that fish I will be able to show for you how to works okay so I don’t have to let the physical otherwise the chess will disappear here as well so I have to be very lucky with catching the fishand catching with that just for the chassis can get like items to the for your whatever it’s called decides on at least guys that this because there is no way I’ll be able to open up that thing you if I don’t catch the fish so I called the fish catfish finally after foreverand a little after four attempts I was able to catch this fishand it’s a decision of soft meet almost with no bones the most important thing when catch a catfish is not let it take you underwater year no way also these fishes are to have different rarities as you can see there’s that starand it looks like Brown or something vendors blue a quality fishand then there is like golden quality fish so I was able because this one is there still couple more fishes in the pond so let’s keep catching the babyand I don’t know how that just mechanic works like I do understand how it works you have to like cash that just for smalland then you can catch the fish but like is one such a difficulty it’s impossible like I don’t think anybody could ever do it like is a serious to just guess when the fish is gonna jump upand when it won’t jump up but for now it seriously impossible like it’s pretty cool but other easier events I think it’s just because this is like winter location event so it’s a bit harder hopefully that will change the difficulty for real unless I’m doing something wrong here which I don’t understand the case I’m trying to catch this one I’m trying to catch this fish it just doesn’t work as you can see guys that’s it like it’s impossible I would love to seriously see a person who could catch a fish from there like seriously unless they’re going I know even if you know the pattern it’s physically possible like in the game to move that orange bubble like that while well that’s a great event okay there is another chess of the topand in order to catch it all have to move that yellow bubble to the top to break the chestand get that reward from it but do I have to catch the fish of the sink that we will try to maybe just guys that reward I think this is going to stay well maybe Lisa got the reward know I didn’t even get the reward I think that’s itand it’s all the fishes disappear from the pond so if I was maybe a bit more pro because me that just sucked. I have never faced a look everybody talks about the middle class the fact is that the way middle class figure generate wealth overwhelmingly is building up equity in the home NASA gets passed on from one generation X the equity in the home you know the classes to enhance what is why world because the software is to have you in the White House in the has an energy policy for renewable resources you have one and for build the class is about the jobs the future really rushed investment were invested 2 trillion in infrastructure ports bridges highways making sure that we have access to do things that really make a difference by creature doing a solo facility outside Harrisburg you know I’m a Scranton boy now Central Pennsylvania is okay but now Northeast began to face I know it’s not typical for former Surgeon General to speak at a convention Surgeon General are appointed by presidents but our work isn’t about politics is duty is to the public eye to guide his science and our job is to speak the truth about public See Other related products: Pray Him With Stringed Intruments Banjo T Shirt

Talking Tickets 12 June 2020--AFL! MLB! Revenue! And, More!
Hey There!
Thanks for being here again this week. If you are enjoying this newsletter, tell your friends and colleagues to sign up by visiting this link.
If you aren’t a member of the Slack community, join now. Folks in 12 different time zones get together there to talk tickets and learn from each other.
How is it mid-June? How’s everyone holding up?
I’m relatively fine. Only relatively because if you’ve never seen a string of those 90+ DC summer days, you don’t know what a heatwave is.
Check out a special session I’m doing with Eric Fuller’s Rescue Meet serieson Tuesday, 16 June at 9 AM PST/12 PM EST. I’m leading his session on sales and marketing and we will be doing a little talky thing, but the core of the event is a 30-45 minute break out of my workshop where we are going to focus on rethinking our strategies, coming up with a diagnosis of the real challenge to tackle, and create some action items to move us forward. It is FREE, but you have to get an invitation by visiting the Rescue Meet website.
Don’t forget Happy Hour with me and my buddy, Ken Troupe, this afternoon at 5 PM EDT.
To the tickets!

1. Reopening in many shapes and forms:
We continue to power forward with the reopening of sports, at least. With concerts and other performances still in a place that lacks a lot of certainty or clarity for when things will be safe to return to normal.
While there are no fans, we will see La Liga return this week and the Premier League restart next week, even if I am going to have to wait a few more days to see Dele Alli.
For many venues, making the most of a bad situation has meant adjusting their business model to allow their venues to become drive-ins and gathering places of a different sort.
The NBA and MLS are going to Orlando in July and Orlando is going to get a moment in the spotlight, though if you haven’t heard of Orlando and Disney…I’m not sure what planet you’ve been on.
What will be curious is whether or not folks actually change their habits after sports comes back and further after folks can attend games. As with everything, the first rule of marketing is to remember that you aren’t your market and that folks often say one thing and do another.
The thing that is obvious is that we need fans in the stands, the Bundesliga has shown that fans matter to the atmosphere, home-field advantage, and…revenue, of course.
Any signs of progress are welcome.
I still would say that I’m cautious because it seems that the science points to an uncertain timeline around a vaccine and cases still building in a lot of places.
I was chatting with my friends in Tokyo about 10 days ago and they were mentioning that the cases were low and I saw this piece about masks in Japan. I think what a lot of us are missing is a clear direction that says “wear the mask because it helps reduce transmission, lessens community spread, and reduces the likelihood of more disruptive actions.”
Of course, I’ve also never realized how filthy too many people are with not washing their hands, covering their mouths when they are coughing and sneezing, and other stuff…
Anyway, continue to keep an eye on the reopening activities like starting up games and events with no or few fans like the AFL’s match with 2,000 fans in attendance. The performances of theatre around the world. And, how the virus is impacting other countries as they move through the different phases of reopening.
And, what do you think about Garth Brooks’s idea?
2. Revenue! Revenue! Revenue!
Somewhere along the line, I should have shared a piece I saw about how brands were discovering that a lot of their partnerships weren’t paying off.
Part of this is because folks weren’t really making the business case for sponsorship and relying too heavily on emotions and fluff.
The reality is that sponsorships is just one part of the larger revenue puzzle that will need to be reimagined coming out of the pandemic.
We are going to have to put our heads together and rethink a lot of the things that we have taken for granted or just “always done that way” like:
* Sales * Marketing * Customer retention * Customer service * Merchandise * Food and beverage
I can go on.
To achieve our revenue goals in the future, we are going to need to think through how we use technology, what our business models and processes look like, and many other things.
In fact, I think to see the industry of sports, the arts, and other forms entertainment continue to grow, we are going to have to see a much higher level of comfort with innovation become the norm.
In the arts and theatre, the unwillingness to change has popped up in the need for many organizations to try and figure how to become digital and offer digital solutions now.
Where was the urgency before a pandemic set in?
The same goes for the sports organizations that still rely on ~40% or more of their revenue from fans coming to the venue?
Why hasn’t the reinvention of the in-game business model been the number one priority?
I’ll tell you three things when I look at this:
First, we can’t get stuck in the way things have always been done. Obviously, no one can plan for a depression and a pandemic…but we really should be doing more risk planning and stress testing of our organizations so that we can be a lot more flexible in how we generate revenue and more secure in our business practices.
Second, right now is a great opportunity to rethink how you are doing business. In too many instances, I sit on webinars and Zoom calls where the gist of the conversation is about how quickly we can ramp back to “normal” and when I look at how many challenges and points of weakness that the industry was facing before the pandemic…I want to go, “Get back to normal? Are you kidding? That’s the best we can do?”
Maybe I’m just grumpy today? Or, maybe I’m just tired of watching the same bad habits get run on repeat.
You tell me!
3. How do businesses fall apart? Slowly at first, and then all at once…or how MLB is determined to miss a great opportunity to have the spotlight:
MLB seems to continue to move down a path towards no season…and it leaves a lot of folks scratching their heads.
Last week, I shared the story about the Cubs claiming that 70% of their revenue comes from having fans at their games. And, I’ve been adamant about the need to rethink business models, pricing structures, and the underlying approach to having folks at games as a way to make sure that attendance isn’t sacrificed at the foot of revenue…which is what is happening all too frequently now.
We also saw MLB lose Coca-Cola as a sponsor this week as well, due to “budgetary concerns” which is code for they don’t see the value of a partnership with someone they’ve been associated with, in a major way for a long time.
What’s even crazier is that baseball seems to spend a lot of time on ideas that would hurt their TV monies as well.
MLB, “call me, please!”
If I were an academic and not a marketer, I would have a paper out that would talk about how the economics of the baseball standoff mirror a lot of the challenges we are dealing with in the American and global economies as a whole…but I’m not so instead I’ll offer up these ideas for how baseball can move forward to salvage this season, but the long-term potential of the game.
First, let’s get a season with somewhere between 70-80 games, expanded rosters, and some sort of pro-rated salary for the players.
To quote Gary Adler, “the owners seem to be jumping over dollars to pick up dimes.”
If the nuclear bomb of no baseball season at any level goes off, I don’t really know that MLB recovers because despite “record” revenues, real attendance is crap, interest in the game isn’t that high, and the already aging fan base is only getting older.
To be clear, if the money saved by not paying minor league players and squeezing a few million out of the players is going to make or break your business…the sport has a much bigger problem.
Second, lay on the marketing as much as possible.
Someone asked me about what is being aired on the MLB network and why they weren’t showing a greater variety of stuff.
I don’t have the answer. I know marketing and not television…but there are so many historical games and so much historical footage, it seems like a missed opportunity to not share these things and give the generation of fans that are still diehard baseball fans the chance to share some of the things they love with folks that might not have experienced baseball in this way before.
4. What will saving the theatre and the arts look like?
In general, I’m a fan of offering public support to the arts because I think the arts are so important for doing a few things like helping us understand other folks’ point of view, explaining complex ideas, and bringing us together. That funding the arts seems like a value in a lot of instances.
In the United States, there are a few industry-led efforts to lobby the government for help for the live entertainment industry. I’m not holding my breath on action anytime soon. But I do appreciate the effort…it is necessary.
In the UK an idea is being floated to allow folks to invest in theatres.
Last week, I shared some of the things that Australia and New Zealand are doing to support the arts. And, this week, the German government has stepped in with a $1.13 billion dollar package to help get their countries arts and entertainment venues back up and running. These are really great starts to helping the industry get back up and running.
As a general topic, I’m concerned about the future of the arts coming out of the pandemic because we’ve seen the funding for the arts be whittled away in so many places.
But the bigger challenge as I mentioned in the revenue section is the need to reinvent our businesses and to rethink how we are marketing and selling our experiences.
The idea that the London Symphony Orchestra is offering up is novel with a shortened production and two performances a night to help maintain social distancing.
Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of folks share social distance mapping, even if I’ve felt like a lot of this was just ducking the hard work of thinking about how to actually create something that will bridge the gap between where we are now and where we need to get to in the future when we get the virus tamed and are able to have full capacity shows again.
I know we have to work to save the arts and theatre and here are a few suggestions:
First, we need to get some sort for the arts and artists at a government level. Full stop. These buildings are centers in our communities and the artists that make the arts are necessary for these investments to make art happen.
Second, saving the arts is a good time to rethink the relationship between the arts, the buildings, and the communities. We’ve become used to the idea that a stadium can revitalize a downtown area, whether or not that actually happens or not.
What about an opera house or an arts center?
If you’ve ever been to Sydney, you’ll know that the arts buildings are just as much gathering places as any stadium…maybe more so.
Right now is a great time to rethink the relationship between the buildings, the performances, and the community to allow them to take center stage as cultural homes and gathering spaces in the future.
I mean, look at the MoPop in Seattle.
You can experience that place inside and outside the building. Lincoln Center, the same. Insert your favorite here.
I don’t have a complete answer for how to use these buildings as indoor/outdoor community spaces going forward now, but I do think back to the concerts on the pier in Seattle during the summer. Or, the way that we’d have concerts for small groups in the Liquid Lounge at the EMP.
And, I recognize that it may be difficult to come up with a solution…there are opportunities.
More importantly, if we aren’t really pulling out all the stops…we may face a situation where many arts organizations do have such catastrophic losses that they can never recover.
Remember, this isn’t a fight that just the arts are fighting, nightlife, pubs, and other folks are all in similar positions and making sure folks fight for their industries is essential.
5. The AFL is in a good spot due to owning Marvel Stadium, but being creative with their revenue streams should be a priority:
File this one under, if you are nice to me, I love you…but I’m a fan of Marvel Stadium and the AFL.
As I’ve mentioned on many occasions, I look at the membership model that some of their clubs offer like Melbourne FC as something everyone around the world should be looking to emulate because it allows them to drive attendance and monetize their global market.
The article above talks about many of the leagues in Australia and how the AFL owning Marvel Stadium has allowed them to have a stronger position than other codes in Australia.
One of the frightening things for a lot of folks as they read through this piece is how the television broadcasters have used the pandemic and the shutdown period to drive down the prices of rights fees. At some point, I think that is a reckoning that a lot of folks are going to be dealing with and I’m certain that this is a scary idea because the expectation that Facebook or Amazon was just going to swoop in hasn’t materialized and I’m not sure if it will.
If you’ve been paying attention to the ongoing challenges Rugby Australia is dealing with, you’ll see that having assets that you can control and that can insulate you from the moment-to-moment ups and downs of business can be helpful in helping you avoid making short-term decisions that are potentially harmful in the long-run.
The truth is that the AFL is a window into the heart of what a lot of organizations in the arts, theatre, sports, concerts, and other live events are dealing with. And there are three things I think we can look to AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan as we head out into our week:
1. Recognize the human side of all of these struggles. Behind every decision are real people that have had their lives disrupted or worse.
2. Be creative. The AFL gained possession of Marvel Stadium when everything was great and this has enabled them to be more in control of their code as the pandemic has played out.
3. Make sure you focus on the right questions. The AFL recognizes that this season is a wipeout on profits and a lot of revenue, so instead of just trying to squeeze everything out of that…they are continuing to focus on recovery and growth. While it doesn’t take the short-term pain away, it does get the focus off of pain and panic and onto progress and positivity. —————————————————————————————————————-

Reflective journal Part 1 Daily routines
October 14, 2019 I started my reflective journal with this beautiful autumn picture which I took at Parc National du Mont-Orford. I like this park very much, although I paid about 8 dollars for one ticket. This expenditure is about “what I want”. When I went to the park, it was the first time for me to go sightseeing in autumn. Yellow, golden and red are special colors in autumn, so I think it is necessary to spend some time and money in this park, in order to relax myself.
According to the map, I can see that Parc National du Mont-Orford is a large and national park, so I believe it is valuable for students to visit. Stukely lake, Mony-Chauve trail, étang-fre-de-lance, mountain biking are some must-go spots.Visitors can drive to enjoy yellow golden trails by cars.
Interestingly, I found that tourists must classify garbage into different bins. Additionally, there are a lot of signs to indicate that this park is an environmentally friendly place. Therefore, the park's furnishings will use environmentally friendly materials. Workers classify and recycle waste.
October 15, 2019 I had a nice breakfast with my friends in Tim. Actually, I am a big fan of ice coffee, so I buy ice coffee four times a week. To sum up, I think I almost spend 20 dollars a week to buy coffee. Thank for this reflective journal, I had a chance to collect my daily and weekly expenditure which helps me to recognize my consumption.
October 24, 2019 That was a tough day in October, because I did extractions of my two wisdom teeth in Galt dental clinic. Firstly, I had booked an appointment to check my teeth on October 6 before I did extractions. I had spent 37 dollars after covered on dental check. Luckily, it was covered 60% by my dental insurance. Secondly, I received phone call from the dental clinic, so my friend picked me up to the clinic in the morning. Sadly, I felt very painful after wisdom teeth extractions. Then, we went to shoppers to buy some medicines with the doctor prescription. I had to say it was a different experience in Canada to see a dentist, because patients need to book appointments first and wait for several weeks. In addition, patients buy prescription medicines in drug store. That was a high expenditure for me to see dentist but I have to. Because I can't stand the feeling of wisdom toothache, this expenditure was necessary.
October 28, 2019 This is the second month in Bishop’s, I still clean and pack my stuffs in my room. I decided to buy a small table, in order to make my room look tidy. I bought a table which is made by recycle materials from IKEA. From these three pictures, you can find out that all lags and platform were made by environmental wood. Therefore, I think that this table is creative and lovely. The table also took me half an hour to install it but it is a good time to build up my handy ability.
November 1, 2019
I have to admit that I like to buy drinks in my daily life, no matter at school or outside. Starbucks iced caramel macchiato cost me almost 6 dollars. The Starbucks coffee shop is a little far from my apartment, so I hanged out with my friends. After a small rest, we went to Costco, buying grocery. I spent about 60 dollars in Costco. Regularly, I go to Costco twice a month. Interestingly, I like Costco workers use reused boxes to pack up food or other things. Also, I found that Costco does not use plastic bags. It is very good to remind customers not to use plastic bags, in order to protect environment.
November 2, 2019 I went to Montreal with my friends. We went shopping and eating delicious food. I bought a lot of beautiful things which I want and I ‘desire’. The picture is a drink called milk tea which is popular in China among students. Then I ordered a bowl of Chinese noodles with soup. To sum up, I almost spent 100 dollars on buying grocery in Chinses supermarket.
November 4, 2019
This was a significant day for me, because I spend zero on transportation or shopping. I went to library and borrowed two books which are related to my major. To be honest, this was the first time for me to borrow books. I want to improve my reading and writing, so I decided to read some native English books, in order to correct my grammar mistakes. I found that most of the books are new in library. I was the first person who borrowed these two books, so students need to read and borrow books from library, in order to make good use of public resources. I should make good use of these books and resources. Renting books is a sharing idea which can reduce paper using and save money.
In addition, I walked 2 kilometers to school’s library, instead of taking bus or cars. I was so proud that I coud walk home from library. My appartment is located on the top of mountain, which is a little far from school. However, I think it is healthy to walk and do exercise. I tried this challenging way to transport from home to school. I felt really happy about I save almost 10 dollars !
Part 2
Shift my patterns of consumption
Although reflective journal only includes two- or three-weeks’ consumption, I believe this activity inspires my thinking of sustainability and environmental protection. In the past, I already though that I am a person who can recycle waste and make less garbage. However, I change my thinking now, because my consumption is still making too much garbage. For example, I already have two tables in my room, but I want to buy one more table to decorate my room. Hence, I will consider more aspects when I buy extract furniture.
I think I need to change my ‘shopping mindset’ firstly. When I feel upset, I will go shopping, in order to get rid of bad emotion. Some implicit theories can show human nature characteristics (Murphy & Dweck, 2016). For instance, a growing mindset which is a desire motivates customers consumption. What people buy or use can reflect customers’ features. Therefore, I should control my ‘shopping mindset’ and establish the concept of ideal consumption when I see some ‘perfect advertisements’. Secondly, I found that I bought a lot of coffee or sweet drinks. In order to build up the thinking of sustainability and environmental protection, I can shift my daily consumption. For example, I can bring my own bottle when I want to buy a bottle of coffee. In grocery stores, I can bring my shopping bags, instead of using plastic bags. My little change can do a lot of helps to our environment. In addition, I can influence my friends shopping styles and encourage more people to cultivate an environmentally friendly habit.
I am happy to complete this reflective journal and shift my daily routine. I will take bus or walk rather than drive car. In learning, I can buy some second hand books rather than buy new books. I can borrow books from library. When I write, I use computer or electronic devices, instead of writing on real paper. Garbage collection and classification are necessary in daily life.
In conclusion, I can buy something ‘I need’ and reduce to buy ‘I desire’. Overwhelming consumption could be shifted, if people follow correct methods.

“You want the truth? It’s hopeless. It’s completely hopeless.” That’s what Patagonia founder and chairman Yvon Chouinard told the L.A. Times about the plight of the earth amid climate change. In 1994. Regardless, Chouinard and his company have spent decades—and millions of dollars—fighting for environmental causes around the world while investing in more sustainable business practices. What’s more, Patagonia has embraced and promoted the B Corporation movement, while Chouinard led such efforts as 1% for the Planet, a collective of companies that pledged to donate 1% of sales to environmental groups and has raised more than $225 million since 2002. Meanwhile, over the past 46 years, Patagonia has become a billion-dollar global brand, making it the ultimate do-good-and-do-well company.
But Chouinard remains unsatisfied. The 81-year-old is more focused than ever on demonstrating, by Patagonia’s example, the lengths a company can go to protect the planet. During a break from fishing near his Wyoming home, Chouinard is both passionate and wry in discussing his business philosophy, what we get wrong about sustainability, why he’s so excited about regenerative agriculture, and Patagonia’s rising political machine.
Fast Company: How do we cope with the idea that to be in business means we are polluters and hurting the planet?
Yvon Chouinard: Everything man does creates more harm than good. We have to accept that fact and not delude ourselves into thinking something is sustainable. Then you can try to achieve a situation where you’re causing the least amount of harm possible. That’s the spin we put on it. It’s a never-ending summit. You’re just climbing forever. You’ll never get to the top, but it’s the journey.
FC: About eight months ago, you wrote a new mission statement for the company: “Patagonia is in business to save our home planet.” What impact has that had so far?
YC: It’s affected every single person’s job. Some more than others, but it’s got everybody thinking. We’ve made a commitment to be fossil-fuel-free by 2025. We’re invested in companies that are working on growing synthetic fibers, stuff made from plants rather than petroleum. We’re not just cleaning up our act in our own buildings and stuff; we’re going around to our suppliers and convincing them to use cleaner energy. Then we’re continuing to work on saving large areas of the planet that capture a lot of carbon. I’m personally working on a new state park down at the tip of South America, about 800,000 acres of peat bogs and swamps and 200,000 acres of sea, that sequesters more carbon than almost anywhere in the world.
FC: Ten years ago, you started getting into the food space, launching Patagonia Provisions and working on regenerative agriculture. Now you’ve been bringing those regenerative principles to your cotton supply chain. Did you always see that as the ultimate path?
YC: This is all pretty new. Scientists are just discovering how important agriculture is to climate change, both negatively and positively. [Environmentalist and entrepreneur] Paul Hawken has a book that lists 100 things that we can do to combat climate change [Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming]. Out of those 100, the most important that applied to us was agriculture, so we’re doubling down on regenerative organic agriculture. We’re working on a new certification that goes beyond organic. We’ve been using organically grown cotton for years, but all it does is cause a little bit less harm. So we decided to start growing it regeneratively and organically. We started with 150 farmers in India, small-scale farmers. We talked them into growing cotton with a minimum amount of tilling. Even with cotton now, we’re sequestering carbon. This is a big deal. Regenerative agriculture can’t be done on a large scale. It just can’t. These people are getting rid of their bugs by squashing them with their fingers. They’re stringing up lights to attract the insects at night and using natural methods. Then they’re using cover crops—chickpeas and turmeric, for which there is a big demand. And they’re using compost. We’re paying them an extra 10%, so [between that and the cover-crop revenue] they’ve almost doubled their income. Next year, we’ve got 580 small farmers who will grow cotton this way.
FC: What do you think of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk pursuing interplanetary travel and Mars and moon colonies because they don’t seem to believe that we can save our home planet?
YC: [Laughs] I think it’s pretty silly. And not just silly, but it’s really a shame. The monies that are going to space exploration should be used to save our own planet right now. We’re in a triage situation. Things are so grim. It’s World War III. I lived through World War II, and I remember what the country had to do to mobilize. You couldn’t buy sugar. You couldn’t buy meat. Being French Canadians, we were lucky in that we got horsemeat. [Laughs] That’s what has to happen with this global warming business. Here we’re just wasting this money going to Mars. I want to start doing some T-shirts that just have a rainbow trout on it, the T-shirt, and it says, there’s no rainbow trout on Mars, or screw Mars. We gotta do that.
FC: You’ve been pretty clear about your pessimism around the fate of the planet while remaining committed to trying to fix it. When we spoke back in 2017, you said something to the effect of “What’s the alternative, just sitting on my ass?” To what do you attribute your ability not to be nihilistic and to keep working toward that never-ending summit?
YC: The solution to depression is action, and I’ve got a clear idea what I need to do. A lot of people want to do something about global warming, but they don’t know where to start. It’s a lack of introspection and imagination. A guy in our fabric lab went to one of our suppliers in Japan and he said, “Hey, I see you’re buying your energy from coal-fired power plants. Why don’t you switch over to green power?” This is a giant Japanese factory. He said, “I hadn’t thought about that.” They looked into it, switched over to green energy, and it only cost them $7,000 more a year. So there you go. The guy never thought about it, but it sounded like a good idea. There is a lot of that low-hanging fruit around.
FC: What role has your Buddhism played in finding that approach?
YC: You can approach Zen in different ways. One way is you can sit there and contemplate your navel all day long. I just approached it through action, whether it’s sport or business.
FC: In the face of news like the Amazon rain forest burning or the current administration’s efforts to open up logging in Alaska, how do you stay motivated? Is it simply more action?
YC: Yeah, it is. We came out with a film that’s against offshore, penned fish farms and hatcheries, Artifishal. It has had a huge effect, particularly in Europe. Because of that film, a lot of the schoolchildren in Sweden are no longer fed farmed salmon. I just heard yesterday that Denmark is going to stop licensing any more offshore fish farms. Francis Mallmann, the chef, the barbecue king in Argentina, has taken salmon out of 19 of his restaurants worldwide. You see little victories like that, and it all adds up.
FC: That’s where your motivation comes from?
YC: Yes. It’s not like we’re sitting here all depressed. [Laughs] And Trump, we’re doing a big backsliding with this whole Trump administration, but they’ll be gone in another year or so. I’m convinced of that. Then we can get rid of all the stuff that he did, start over again.
FC: The Business Roundtable recently issued a statement expanding its definition of the purpose of a corporation from solely making money for shareholders to seeking to benefit all stakeholders, including employees, communities, and the environment. What did you think when you heard that?
YC: It’s a good first step. The ones that actually do it are going to be pretty pleasantly surprised that it leads to good business. The consumer, especially with consumer products, is expecting that from companies, and if you’re not doing it, you’re going to lose out.
FC: You’ve said in the past that you could convince anyone one-on-one that chasing growth for growth’s sake is bad and that embracing the ideals of sustainability, or responsibility, only makes you more profitable. If you were in that Business Roundtable, what would you say to the CEOs of JPMorgan Chase or Apple?
YC: If I had enough time, I would just give them example after example of how doing the right thing ended up making us more money. And the additional motivation was just believing in karma. It comes back every single time.
FC: Patagonia is a private company. Would it help your argument to more regularly disclose financials?
YC: It probably would. [Laughs] But I don’t know. Let’s say you’re a gasoline company, selling gas at the pump. There’s a gas station on every corner, basically. Would you go out of your way to go to the one that was a member of 1% for the Planet, and on your receipt it said, “Thank you for spending $40 on gasoline. Forty cents of that is going to go to planting trees, saving the planet”? I mean, be very specific about where it’s going to go.
FC: Probably, yes.
YC: Gasoline is gasoline, right? You can’t sell your gasoline on [the idea] that yours is superior to someone else’s.
FC: Though they try, but yeah.
YC: We all know it’s the same stuff. [Laughs] Yet they spend millions in advertising themselves. For what? It’s ridiculous. It’s not based on anything tangible. But this would be a great marketing ploy.
FC: In the past, you consulted with folks at large companies, such as Walmart, and came away not so convinced of their actual ability to pursue sustainability. If we’re looking to create a better version of capitalism, what do you think should be done with publicly traded companies?
YC: You’ve got to reinvent capitalism altogether. It leads to a whole bunch of poor people and a few extremely rich people. Ultimately, capitalism is going to lose its customers. There won’t be anybody to buy the product because everybody is going to be so poor. The whole thing is going to crash before the next election, probably. We’re going to get another huge recession, and everybody’s going to lose out on their stocks. There we go again. It’s a system that’s got to change. The whole stock thing is dependent on growth. Look at Amazon. Amazon doesn’t make a profit. They don’t pay any taxes. Nothing. But they’re growing like crazy. It’s all growth, growth, growth—and that’s what’s destroying the planet. I’m dealing with that myself. We’re a billion-dollar company, over a billion, and I don’t want a billion-dollar company. The day they announced it to me, I hung my head and said, “Oh God, I knew it would come to this.” I’m trying to figure out how to make Patagonia act like a small company again.
FC: How do you stop growth?
YC: There is a book from the Henokiens, an organization of companies that have been in business for 200 years minimum. Of course there are hardly any American companies; they are either Japanese or European. How are they able to stay in business for 200 years? Well, they couldn’t grow 15% a year for 200 years, let me tell you that. [Laughs] They were able to diversify, and they’re not the same company as when they started. Some of them started out as a blacksmith’s shop, like I did. But they have purposely held back on growth for the sake of longevity.
FC: What do you make of proposals like the Green New Deal? Is that encouraging?
YC: It is, absolutely. I’m an avowed socialist. I’m proud of it. That was a dirty word just a few years ago until Bernie Sanders brought it up. It was equated with communism and that whole thing. Yet the countries around the world that are most squared away are all socialistic countries like those in Scandinavia. I’m not talking about Venezuela, which is a disaster. That’s not a socialistic country. That’s a . . . I don’t know what.
FC: What role can businesses like Patagonia play in advocating for that national mobilization effort to save the planet and change how we work in the process?
YC: We’re keeping quiet in the primary election, but for the national presidential election, we’re going to be very, very active. We’re going to spend a lot of money and basically say, vote the climate deniers out. Anyone who is a climate denier or even on the fence, vote them out because they are evil. They are out to destroy our planet, and we’re not going to stand for it. We got involved in the last election and we helped elect a couple of senators in Montana and Nevada. I had no idea how much power we really have.
FC: That was the first time Patagonia pushed for and supported individual candidates. What were the lessons out of that experience?
YC: They were going to be close races, and I’ve heard from them both that we made the difference. When we have that amount of power, let’s use it. Because the opposition is using it. You’ve got the Koch family and the fossil-fuel companies: They’re going to be influencing the elections. We’ve got to do the same thing.
FC: You mentioned Artifishal. Even with Patagonia’s smaller, shorter films—I liked [surfer] Dave Rastovich’s Saving Martha, on Tasmanian fish farms—there’s an aspect of fun with them, whether it’s surfing or climbing, combined with activism for the causes you believe in. Over the last number of years, you’ve invested more in that kind of storytelling to get these issues across to people in a way that’s engaging. I don’t want to call it marketing, but has this become a much bigger part of the company?
YC: Well, that’s for sure. We’ve got a propaganda machine going. After we were involved in this film 180 Degrees South [a 2010 documentary retracing Chouinard’s 1968 journey from Ventura, California, to Patagonia, Chile] and then DamNation [Patagonia’s 2014 movie about the damage dams can do], we realized the power that we have in film. I had no idea. With DamNation, we got the whole Obama administration to rethink hydropower. They no longer considered it green energy. Now it’s back, of course, with Trump, but that was it; they said hydropower is not green energy, and that was as a result of our film. We recognize that people make decisions based on emotion, and the best way to elicit emotion is through film. It’s not through books or catalogs or speeches. So we’re in the film business. We’re working on 10 films at a time these days. Some of them don’t make a cent. But that’s not the purpose.
FC: A lot of people look at you as an inspirational figure, but who inspires you? Who is Yvon Chouinard’s Yvon Chouinard?
YC: [Laughs] Well, I think . . . I don’t know. There are a few people around the world who are doing really great stuff. Huey Johnson, who has a nonprofit in Marin County, in San Francisco, has been around a long time. He started Conservation International, the Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, and he’s got an organization called Resource Renewal Institute. The guy never gives up. He is an optimist. I’m a pessimist. He’s been an inspiration. [Environmentalist] David Brower. [Oceanographer] Sylvia Earle. Jane Goodall is trying to save her chimpanzees, and they’re on their way out. It’s like Friends of the Polar Bear. Forget about trying to save the polar bear; you gotta save the planet to save the polar bear. That’s depressing stuff, but they hang in there. Goodall is on the road 360-something days a year. It kills me to spend just a few days. I just got back from Labrador and oh my God, I mean . . .
FC: That’s far from Wyoming.
YC: Getting back from Labrador to Jackson Hole was an effort. I ran from one end of the Boston airport to the other, because my plane from Halifax was late. I passed 36 gates, and they weren’t in a row. They were in different terminals. I practically had a heart attack. [Laughs] And get this: I get to the gate, and they’ve shut it down. The plane is ready to take off. There’s a guy there who says, “Hey, I know who you are. I told them to keep the gate open for just a couple minutes more. I knew you were gonna be coming.” And they did, and they got me on. The guy says, “Hey, I’m a cinematographer. I know all about all the films you make. Keep up the good work.” And he walked away. I thought, Jesus, this guy is an angel. [Laughs] That’s the karmic kickback I’m talking about.
THE SECRET TO FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE
Patagonia is helping to lead the shift to regenerative agriculture, which sequesters carbon rather than producing it. Here’s how it works.
1. Create healthy soil
During photosynthesis, plants use solar energy to extract carbohydrate molecules, or sugar, from carbon dioxide. Those carbon-based sugars are extruded from the plant’s roots, feeding bacteria and fungi into the nearby soil. Those microorganisms turn soil minerals into nutrients that feed plants and fight disease.
2. Avoid pesticides
To keep the soil as healthy as possible, growers eschew chemicals (akin to organic farming), relying instead on natural methods—from hanging lights at night to physically removing and killing insects by hand.
3. Plant cover crops
In between seasons of growing cash crops such as cotton, farmers cultivate cover crops such as turmeric and chickpeas, which make the soil hardier by protecting it against nutrient loss and erosion, as well as helping to control pests. The farmers then have an additional crop to sell to supplement their income.
4. Use low-till farming
Tilling churns and disturbs roots—where most plants store a significant amount of their carbon—and other rich organic matter in the soil, making it less robust and productive. Even worse, it releases carbon into the atmosphere. By contrast, low- or no-till growing lets the carbon remain sequestered in the soil. Even when the roots decay, the CO2 emissions take a long time to reach the earth’s surface and atmosphere.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY.....THE WEARIN' OF THE GREEN
St. Patrick’s Day is upon us. Two whole days this year because of the weekend. Everyone is Irish. Most will be wearing the green.
Party time! Two days of the Duval crawl. Imagine! Drinking all that beer. Colored green, of course.
Key West party goers are fortunate. We have in excess of 300 bars.
Corned beef and cabbage. Oh, how I look forward to it. Only once a year. On St. Pat’s Day. One problem. Can’t get it. Everywhere I go, even with reservations, the restaurants are sold out.
I have a house guest coming in tomorrow for 2 weeks. Barbara. I am going to surprise her! Buy a piece of corned beef from Publix and ask her to cook it for me some day this week.
Hopefully, she will be amenable.
Key West will be crazier than normal these 2 days. There are locals, tourists, and spring breakers. My running around will be limited.
Chart Room last night. Still feel heavy re Che’s death. That feeling.
John, Steve and Cindy at the bar. Some Che discussion. Not much. I suspect everyone wanted to avoid the topic.
Mary there, also. We ended up having dinner together at Pier 1 outside on the deck. A beautiful evening, a beautiful view. Boats going back and forth in the distance. The boats returning home after watching Key West’s fabled sunset.
I must share something. Pier 1’s food is exceptional. A new chef was hired last year. She is amazing!
Living on an island, one learns respect for nature, fish, birds, little deer, etc. Something about it. Man becomes conscious of nature.
You are already aware of the nut who jumped off a pier onto a pelican. Can’t do it. Pelicans Federally and State protected.
William Hunter Hardesty the guilty tourist.
He left town. A warrant for his arrest was obtained. Everyone is upset with the man. He had the event videoed and run on Facebook, also.
A warrant was issued for his arrest. Evidence of the seriousness of what occurred is that the warrant was 10 pages long. Highly unusual.
Hardesty was vacationing yesterday in Ocean City, Maryland. Bragging to everyone re his exploit with the Key West pelican. Some had read in the news re his wrongdoing and that the police were looking for him. They called the police. Hardesty has been arrested. Bail $80,000.
The charges include cruelty to a migrating bird and intentionally feeding a pelican.
The message: Don’t jump on our pelicans! Serious wrongdoing!
I have been preaching for several years that robots are coming. People everywhere are aware. Our politicians not. Government is not doing anything to plan for the invasion and retrain the multitude of humans that will be out of work.
A new robot was introduced yesterday. The Guardian LFI, Mark 3 Underwater Robot.
Perfect for Keys’ waters. The robots’ sole function are to control the lionfish population.
Lionfish generally reside on coral reefs at a depth that divers cannot safely reach. The depths where lionfish breed.
The robot can dive to the depth a human cannot. The robot stuns a lionfish and brings it to the surface. Each robot can stun up to 10 lionfish a dive.
Lionfish are extremely dangerous to native reef fish. Scientists estimate lionfish ae reducing native reef fishes by 79 percent.
This blog has in excess of 69,000 subscribers. Readers from all over the world. I hear from distant followers frequently.
Today, Theodore Markis. A Greek. I love Greece!
First time I have heard from Markis. He sent via Facebook a copy of a Greek newspaper. A newspaper published in Epirus called Proinos Logos. A copy of the 3/4/19 edition.
Markis lives and works in Ioannina, Greece. Don’t know what he does. He studied at Northwestern.
Markis has become friends with Key West artist Raymond Rolston. They have been together in Key West and Greece.
The purpose of the newspaper was to introduce me to the artist Rolston. He shows at Sunset at Mallory Square and the Island Arts Gallery.
Rolston has done a number of paintings incorporating Key West and Greek scenes. Makes for special works.
I am ashamed to say I have never met Rolston. I will do so soon. Hopefully Markis and I can have a continuing e-mail relationship. I ask Markis to write me directly at [email protected].
The following galls me. It will gall you.
September is the last month of the Federal budget/fiscal year. No one tries to save money. Any monies remaining in the till in September are spent. God forbid a surplus at the end of the year. Such might mean fewer dollars in the next year’s budget.
Trump says we are hurting financially. He wants to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Before he does so, he should look at the wasteful September spending in the government.
September found the budget with $197 billion unspent. Working under the use it or lose it philosophy, following are some examples of where our taxpayer dollars went.
The Pentagon spent $4.6 million on lobster and crab. Someone ordered a $9,341 Wexford office chair. $11, 816 on a foosball table. $258,901 on pianos.
Pigs!
Enjoy your day!

Kwame Dwomoh Agyeman writes: Contribution of football to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
In the last 72 hours, I have come across a news item of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), appointing Dr. Ransford Abbey and two others to put together a Strategic Business plan for the association on the contribution of football to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In these very difficult times where COVID-19 has stung the entire country to the core, issues like these attract my attention.
The other day I enjoyed banter as to why football desperately needed to make a return as it affected the livelihoods of many and how its continued absence would hit loads of people really hard. Interesting as it sounded, one critical issue that was very profound was whether the government attached any meaningful importance to football and to a large extent sports in Ghana and in these times. For those who backed the notion of football coming back pretty shortly, they simply could not wrap their heads around why the sport was not getting any look in at Jubilee House. That the President was projecting the opening the Airport and not even a projection on when the sport made a return further irked them. I would attempt to throw out how relevant the sport is to our GDP and possibly put in numerical terms why that leather ball being kicked around by grown men is so key to our GDP.
The write up is set in a very tough neighborhood in Accra where every little kid desperately aspires to make it big and get to the very top. Mane after years of blood sweat and tears, manages to make the grade and signs for a decent European club. He is on wages of €50,000 a month after tax.(GHC 342,500.00 at todays exchange rate of €1=GHC 6.85.Knowing where he comes from like our elders say, he sends a good part of the money he makes in Europe home to take care of the glaring challenges of his family, friends and the community at large. The money is then invested and the returns are pretty imminent
ECONOMIC.
One of the biggest challenges Governments the world over faces is creating employment opportunities for its population. The situation is more profound in Africa where governments have consistently struggled to provide jobs both in the formal and informal sector. These have led to all kinds of challenges for sitting governments who have ended up being voted out. Now this is the thing. With the money generated by this kid earning decent wages in Europe over a relatively long period, the funds that have been invested from his wages into all kinds of businesses would obviously create a good number of jobs. Assuming this lad invests in the hospitality industry which grows to become a chain he could well be employing hundreds of individuals from chefs to labourers. Now that is surely taking of a good number of unemployed people off the streets. People that the government could not find jobs for. Again, in times where the cliché of private sector being the engine of growth, most of these jobs would be provided by individuals with the means to create them. Our banks borrow at huge interests’ rates and demand so much paperwork it’s almost impossible to secure a loan and get something going right after school. That kid passes for that private businessman who can turn around the lives of many. In a part of the world where footballers, are fast becoming like a cash crop, the returns from the sport cannot be overlooked. If we have all these footballers earning decent wages investing in our economy in the short, medium and long term, governments and successive ones as such would be more than happy to be a big part of this success story of job creation.
Again, in part of the world where the extended family system is still very much practiced, some of these financial support finds its way to people we have not even met. Now that makes a different. The practical part, is very much experienced on matchdays/ weekends. Enter Mr Tagoe who operates a restaurant at the Accra Sports Stadium. This gentleman’s business over the years has been heavily supported by fans on matchdays. The businessman has evolved leading to the employment of additional hands. The value chain of this spectacle cannot be overlooked especially in these covid times. The production of food has dropped as demands by Tagoe, the waakye seller, and all the other catering services at the various match venues would have dropped. These guys would not be ordering the quantities they ordered before as consumption continues to fall. What that means is that Tagoe and all the other food providers may be compelled to lay some staff of as profits and the very existence of the business would have been hit. We can the imagine the numbers that live off all these service providers on matchdays. With increase unemployment your guess is as good as mine for any sitting government and the vices they come with.
EDUCATION
The bills must be paid to afford quality education. The revenues coming in from the footballers all over the globe vis-à-vis that of the locals in here caters for a large part of the youth and adults. The Free Senior High school concept has been great but that is not good enough to compete on the job front. A first degree appears not to be good enough these days. Even a Masters may not land the job you crave for. These funds would come in handy. A country with a very high level of education competes strongly even without natural resources. The stories of the Singapore’s, Koreas and co are telling. With these funds not readily available, there is extreme pressure on government to provide jobs that are not existent. The wages from football can make a difference when high numbers are doing well to send some monies home to take care of the bills. In a part of the world where capital flight is the norm from foreign investors, we cannot overlook at the importance of the football space with respect to the contribution of football to the nations GDP as these highly skilled workers can turn around their brains both locally and internationally to affect the economy.
HEALTH
In a country with all its health challenges, the impact of football cannot be overlooked. There are appears to be very little opportunities again for the youth. One of the challenges of this issue is when the youth turn to drugs supposedly for solace when there is little to be done. In very difficult environments especially in the slums, this is a common phenomenon. Though there is everything wrong with taking to drugs, an occupied hand may barely fall to this canker. In the absence of nothing though, everything is possible. If the numbers appear disturbing and nationwide, government would have to spend hard earned cash to import drugs to fight the menace. Again, statistics have continually shown that sports is key to maintaining a healthy population with emphasis on youth and to an extent adults. If a good number of a country’s population take to football and even if they don’t make it to a high level, again government would save money to be invested in the growth of other sectors of the economy.
TOURISM
I have had the opportunity to cover many national team assignments and there is always this emotional link to the country. There is always the talk of Ghana about how we have excelled at the youth level and how the Black Stars have excelled at the various AFCONS and the World Cup. All the positive noises about Brazil is definitely not for the publicity surrounding construction firm Odebrecht. It is to do with its exports in the football space. With many fanatic and business minds(agents et al) desperate to find the next Neymar, Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Zico or Pele, it is destination Brazil. Such is the demand for their players on the back of their performances when given the opportunity. In one breadth it is providing thousands of jobs. In another breadth it is serving as destination for talent and with the fine beaches from Rio to Fortaleza comes a good tourism destination away from the hustle of discovering. Tourism in turn brings in huge money from the individuals making the travel to there. In the last twenty by courtesy of our performances, we have had thousands of people coming over to have a closer look at our talent and exporting them thus becoming a tourism hub which brings in the funds.
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
This ties in perfectly with the earlier point raised about football boosting both international and local tourism in Ghana. With these exploits by our various national teams, it naturally draws in some attention of the passionate followers who come over to so our talent and help take them abroad. The more they come, with or without success, they rack some bills at our hotels, restaurants and tourist sites. If they like it here, there is every chance that they would come again. The Ghanaian Hospitality is positive energy everywhere. Their forex spend is important to our forex reserve which is key to our GDP.
On the local scene, it gets even better. There are 18 Premier League clubs and as many as 48 Division One League clubs who travel across the country on matchdays and get accommodated in our various hotels. I wonder how these hotels who benefit from close to 40 weeks of weekend slots in-season and another 6 weeks of pre-season slots are coping right now. That revenue has disappeared from their books. That revenue could be a gamechanger to a particular hotels revenue streams and in the area of expansion and the creation of more jobs if they were being patronized. And oh, the tax man regularly pays a visit to these hotels as well you know.
TRANSPORT INDUSTRY
There are 18 Premier League clubs and as many as 48 Division One League clubs who travel across the country on matchdays. These clubs sometimes rely on the services of transport companies to get their teams around for close to 40 weeks of weekend slots in-season and another 6 weeks of pre-season slots. Beyond the clubs, as many fans accompany their teams back and forth on these trips. This goes a long way in providing much needed revenue for these companies and also ensures a good sustainability project. With football being played literally around the clock on, much needed revenue is assured which in turns provide employment, decent spending power on all manner of services and a healthy business for the economy. This cannot be overlooked as it feeds strongly into the Gross Domestic Product and Per capita income conversations.
BRANDING & ADVERTISING
Brand association and sporting connectivity is impossible to overlook these days. Huge global entities look at football to project their brands and make some huge profits. The Nikes, Reeboks, Adidas, Pumas, the beverages, financial entities and more attach their brands to football to project them as they are assured of huge eyeballs on a consistent basis. When these brands are doing well and their profit margin increases through sales, they are more likely to produce more, thereby hiring more people and again taking the burden away from government to provide jobs. Again, with their profit margins on the increase, they pay huge taxes to governments who use them to develop the state. There are obviously other options for brand association but none comes closer to sports and how quickly the numbers spiral. With jobs being created and with wages guaranteed, peoples spending power improves which in turn positively impacts the economy. Higher and decent standards of living helps the human mind emotionally and with output from staff most often on the increase. This cannot be overlooked.
CREATIVE ARTS INDUSTRY
Here in Ghana, Legon Cities Football Club and Kotoko in the past readily come to mind. Our artists have been given huge platforms to sell themselves and demonstrate their artistry. By these opportunities on matchdays, they connect with their bases and show the world what they can do. Opportunities and other gigs find their way to them from this medium. They make some good money, spend some good money, others benefit from their spend as retailers in all kinds of services also benefit from their work.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
Football activity all year rounds means business to the financial sector. When deals are done, both on and off the pitch they are facilitated by this sector. Our funds end up in these entities who trade with them. Our funds and assets are used for collateral for loans, while revenue from our talents all over the globe are traded through this same sector. They largely help in keeping them afloat as the transactions are huge both on the domestic and international fronts. These banks benefit from charges on transactions which are most often overlooked. That clearly adds up to their profit margins that helps in the payment of good salaries and improves the standing of the banks and the financial welfare of the society at large. The government is happy to see this chain as it means an increase in taxes, wealth creation and employment. Think about that.
SPORTS BETTING
Has anyone per chance counted the number of betting companies on their streets and what happens in there? Well, this it. People from all walks of lives are making huge revenue from the actors on the pitch and not just for emotional satisfaction as was the case in the past. These days, people’s income are being inflated by their wins on football games and Ghana is not an exception. They win sums of money that these footballers can only sometime dream off. What is the spill over effect? Again, there is the employment conversation, the tax conversation, the income conversation and the construction conversation with these betting companies on a massive expansion drive all over the country. These companies are sponsoring the football clubs and paying good money for that translating into decent income for the players. There is the tax component from the companies themselves and from the spend of staff and players alike which is massive economic booster.
In concluding from the above inferences, sports and its relationship to the GDP of a country like Ghana cannot be overlooked. I am sure Dr Abbey and his team would help with the figures. This is something government cannot overlook and its my belief that a lot more attention and importance would be placed on the football industry like the Kenyans have done with Athletics as the Egyptians, Nigerians and several African countries have done with football.
Thanks for reading. We shall overcome.

TWO Days later five days after the birth marcy finally wakes up fullyand they name the child.
Due to marcys inability to have more children and their already existing 2 year old daughter in brooklynn(2) they decide to raise the child male and name him robert jr ‘robin’ tar’ein nash-price.
At two weeks old marcy puts a piece of toma tech in robins right wrist and eye
and after bothe births made six sets of fake birth certificates with the childrens prints and list six different couples as parents and six different birth states {all of the parents are orphans that were dead less then a year after robins birth so no one can contest the paperwork}
In the aftermath of robins birth marcy becomes terrorfied that her past and heritage will hurt her children and goes to extreames to prepare them for the danger shes sure theyll face sooner or later, giving them all that she can, teaching the two every aspect of toma heritage(history/medical/religion/mythology/ect) that she can when she can as soon as they can understand it all while training them to escape and survive at all cost from the day they can walk unasisted and unsupervised raising them more like soldiers then children
in 1994 marcy is ready to go back to work and lynn(4) and robin (2) spend their time with the wife of one of their babas coworkers when both their baba and mi’i’ia are working.(almost always at the station)
By 1996 (L/6 and R/4) HAVE CONVINCED THEIR PARENTS TO GIVE THEM A LOCKER THAT MATCHES THEIR BABAS THAT IS KEPT IN THE APARTMENTS SHARED BATHROOM.
AND BY 1998 L/8 AND R/6 HAVE THE ESCAPE PLAN FROM THEIR APARTMENT DOWN PATT AND CAN RUN IT IN THEIR SLEEP AND THOUGH THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEIR MA’I‘IA IS SCARED OF BUT KNOW THAT SHE IS SCARED OF SOMETHING REALLY BAD
{OUT OF THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW, ONTO THEIR FIRE ECAPE, UP THE LADDER TO THE NEXT FLOOR, INTO THE STORAGE ROOM, THROUGH IT, INTO THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE, PULL THE FIRE ALARM TO CREATE A CROWD TO HIDE THEMSELVES IN ON THE WAY OUT, DOWN THE STAIRS, INTO THE LOBBY,OUT A SIDE EXIT AND INTO THE STORAGE LOCKER VIA THE BUILDINGS ALLEYWAY}
THERE: THEY ARE TO WAIT FOR MARCY BUT IF IT BECOMES CLEAR SHES NOT COMEING THEY ARE TO MAKE THEIR WAY TO A SAFE ZONE USEING THE LOCKERS CONTENTS.
THOUGH THEIR 8 AND SIX THEIR MENTAL STATE IS CLOSER TO TWO FOURTEEN YEAR OLDS AS TOMA CHILDREN (EVEN HALF BLOODS) MATURE MUCH FASTER THEN NON TOMA INDVIDUALS.
ON 7-15-1999 MARCY(){}CATCHES BOBBY() IN THE HALL OUT SIDE THEIR APARTMENT HIGH AND DRUNK THE TWO FIGHT VISCIOUSLY AND BOBBY LEAVES THE BUILDING TO COOL DOWN AND SOBER UP A BIT WHILE MARCY RETURNS TO THE INSIDE OF THE APARTMENT WHERE SHE IS SHOCKED TO SEE ROBIN(7) IN THE KITCHEN (HE SHOULD BE IN BED LIKE HIS SISTER IS)
MARCY FORCES HERSELF CALM AND TELLS ROBIN TO GO GRAB HIS LYNNS AND HER GO BAGS {ALWAYS PACKED JUST IN CASE} AND TO WAKE LYNN SINCE THE THREE OF THEM ARE GOING TO A FREINDS HOUSE{BOBBYS COWORKER} AND WHEN THATS DONE TO MEET HER IN THE ENTRY WAY TO GET THEIR SHOES WHILE SHE GETS SOME FOOD TO BRING WITH THEM(HER CULTURE FROWNS ON SHOWING UP TO A NON RELITIVES HOME UNANOUNCED WITHOUT FOOD IN HAND)
ROBIN(7) HEADS OFF AS HIS MI’I’IA MAKES A CALL AND THEN BEGINS MAKEING A PLATE OF FOOD(SHE ALWAYS HUMS IN THE KITCHEN NO MATTER WHAT IHAPPENING IN THEIR LIVES AND ROBIN THINKS HER HUMMING IS MAGIC SINCE EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS BETTER AFTER SHE DOES HER THING)
FIRST HE GOES INTO THEIR ROOM VIA THE MAIN HALL AND QUICKLY WAKES LYNN BY SHAKEING HER SHOULDER.
LYNN(9) WAKES SILENTLY DUE TO MARCYS TRAINING and quietley asks “whats up”
“were going for a visit will you grab our bags while I grab ma’i’ia’s and baba’s?”
she nods and hops up heading for the bathroom through the connected door where she grabs the bags from their locker while he goes through the hall and into their parents room to grab theirs.
She drops the bags in their room and goes over to their parents where she find robin packing their mi’i’ias phone/jewelry box{she never leaves the house without it} computor/keys into her go bag. She grabs her babas bag and begins packing the contents of the rooms safe into it(not knowing hes not coming with)(both bags on the bed){not really noticing what shes packing} as well as her granpa nash’s medal box.
The two close the bags and take them over to their room.
There lynn begins to pack their important items into their bag{not knowing how long theyll be gone but knowing that leaving in the middle of the night isnt a good thing}[their jewelryboxes their baby blankets stuffed animals and a few of their favorite books and their journals]
while shes doing this robin had fastened their parents bags together then his job done he notices that he cant hear his ma’i’ia humming any more.
Excited to catch his ma’i’ia doing her :magic: he sneaks out of his and lynns room and into the main hall where he ducks behind the shelves in the hall and peaks through it.
But instead of seeing his ma’i’ia doing magic he sees her fighting a man dressed in all black with yellow eyes.
Robin is scared and quietly rushes back to his room where lynn is fastening all four bags together.
Robin waves to get her attentionand uses one of the signs mi’i’ia had taught them {translation:GET OUT NOW FAST AND QUIET}
her drowziness instantly forgotton at the look in her brothers eyes lynn grabbs the teid together bags and robins hand and all but drags him to the window.
She climb out and while robin follows she pulls the bags onto her shoulder before the two quickly scamper up the ladder in a nervous silence and clamber into the storage unit{bobbys spot to medicate} where they raceout of the room and into the hallway out side.
Lynn runs ahead to pull the alarm knowing that robin will follow her.
On his way out robin knocks the space heater and bobbys vodka over in his rush but is moveing to quickly to notice as he flees into the hall the alam covering the sound.
The two grab hands again, hide in the crowd and race down the stairs two at a time.
At the bottom of the stairs the two split from the crowd, run through the lobby and exit out the side door and quickly duck into the locker.
Inside the locker lynn turns on the security screens on just in time to see the man drop their ma’i’ia’s body to the floor of their kitchen
the two are to shocked to do anything but watch as the man goes through the apartment trashing first their parents and then their own rooms.
Just as the man finnishes with their room they watch as the ceiling comes down in flame.
The fire spreads quickly and the man flees the apartment and leaves the sight of the cameras.
In stunned silence they wathc as first their apartment and then their floor are consumed by flame the cameras going down one by one as they melt.
Then they are further shocked when they see their baba race into the building just before the lobby camera goes down damaged by falling debrie.
Lynn begins to cry as she realizes that both of her parents are dead while robin turns to packing the locker up trying to not think about whats happened.
First he packs all of the storage lockers contents into their babas half empty bag:
--toma artifacts
--:///: and nash family heirlooms
--paperwork
--pictures
--:bucksgmas: books
--marcys religious wear and jewelry
--toma tech unrelated to the security system
then he pack the security cameras hardrives into an empty bag already in the locker and puts all three of the flashdrives onto his and lynns birthstone necklaces.
Then robin takes lynn by the hand{lynn holding three of the bags atatched to each other and robin the other two tied together} and drags her out of the locker and into the alley between the bakery and daycare across the street from the apartment building so that they can see whats happening with the cameras down.
Lynn goes along with it but has no hope of seeing their baba walk out of the building as the two watch the crowds through tears.
Robin is the first to see the man in black as he stumbles out of the building and begins going up to people waving a picture frame around.
Robin recognises the frame of a picture of lynn and their mi’i’ia, and he is struckwith terror as he realizes that the man is after lynn and rufusing to loose anyone else robin grabs lynn by the hand and takes off running forceing her to catch up{lynn still has three bags and robin two}
the two run for ten minutes straight until they reach a late night buss stop
its now 10:42 7/15/1999
at the stop lynn now calmish in the face of the new mission(survive run keep robin safe)uses money from the sathel neklace mi’i’ia required both to waer and keep full of the three hundred dollors she put in them to get them both tickets to ;;;;;; newyork{lynn at eleven passes for 17ish easily due to her hight of 5’9’ and reserved demeaner and robin at eight passes for 14ish due to his 4’4’ height and attitude}
from 12:22pm 7/15/1999 to 12:30pm 8/04/1999 the two make their way to new york via buses telling any who ask their going to their parents for a custody switch
on 8/04/1999 at 12:41pm the two dissembark in oooooo, newyork and wind up in a little field surrounded by trees in a park next to the bus stop.
Lynn takes their remaining mony and after empting their babas bag goes to buy the two food bag in hand, whilrobin repacks the bags.
He empties the other four bags onto the pile left by lynn.
Then he repacks it all :
---his bag gets:all of lynns and his clothes, blankets, stuffed animals and on of the sets of fake birth certificate
---lynns bag:his and lynns other important items thei ma‘i’ia’s religious and daily head scarves, their ma’i’ia’s leather jacket and their babas work turnout coat and the other five fake sets of cirth certificates and their real set
---marcys bag:his parents jewelry documents toma artifacts :///: and nash familey heirlooms paperwork :bucksgmas: books ma’i’ia’s {jewelry box computor phone and keys} safe contents pictures and tech.
---locker bag:the hardrives and their grandfathers medal box
this leaves their parents day clothes unpacked
lynn returns with theirs babas bag full of long term food and a few bags of fast food in hand at 7:00 am (she spent her time shopping at a 24/7 store getting as much as she could for the least amount of money then she picked up food from mcdonalds.)
the two eat quickly then lynn empties the locker bag and fills it with their parents day clothes and takes them and sells them while robin reorganizes the food in their babas bag.(7:30 am)
she returns at around 10:30 am with an empty bag and 89 dollors and repacks the hardrives and the medal box into their babas empty bag.
The two then take turns sleeping in shifts until 12:00 pm at which point they begin making their way deeper into the city.
The two liv on the streets completely on their own surviving off pick pocketing and using the facilities of a fire station that they find unlocked when the trucks are on call until 8/19/1999 when lynn runs into owen strickland who came in on his day off with his son tyler kennedy strickland{7}.
Owen simply makes another plate and leaves it for her as well as a tupperware container full of food for her {not wanting to scare her off and wanting her to keep coming back thinking shes a homeless 17ish year old and wanting her to have somewhere safe to crash and food to eat[he knew someone had been using the stove and stocked food while the crews slept and now he knows who]}
lynn and owen proceed to repeat this every day that owen is on shift and after a few weeks the two start talking to each other.{8/19/1999 to 1/02/2000}[lynn 11 to 12 robin 9 to 10]
When owen realizes shes younger then she looks he offers to get in contact with her parents but she tells him that their dead and that she has no other family(he notes that she stuters over saying the later bit and assumes she has a younger sibling somewhere hidden and dosent trust him with them yet which also explains why their on the streets {cps might seperate them} so he starts cooking double the food and sending her off with lots of packed food.
Then he talks to his wife and asks if they can take them in{their already certified as foster parents due to the process they used to adopt her sisters son tyler} and she agrees.
The next day she and owen go in on his day off after the crews head out and the two discuss it with lynn.
Lynn clearly wants to but is hesitating until :oswife: hands her a contract that states that the stricklands will do everything in their power to keep her and her sibling(s) together all it needs is her and their names filled in and signitures in front of witnesses{someone from one of the other crews}.
Lynn agrees and runs off.
She comes back less then five minutes later with two birth certificates {listing lynn as lynda nomi price and her little brother robin alexi price 12 and 10} and a boy{robin} and five duffel bags.
While lynn trusts them robin is more suspicious and shy.
:oswife: takes the certificates and the now signed contract and goes to her office to line things up while owen takes the kids home.
:oswife: uses her job and pull to rush the kids placement with her{the judge agrees as she and owen had earned the childrens trust and he saw no reason to further distress the children{they lost their parents and have found a new set that they trust and can depend on in his mind} irregardles of what yyyyyyy the cps agents assigned wants. 1/02/2000
{{{Yyyyyyy hates :oswife: yyyyyyyy is an expat hunter who still cant stand tomas
she tried to keep them from getting tyler and had custody of the boy for a week herself and was sickenly cruel to the then six year old
tyler never said anything scared of loosing owen :oswife: and his cousins{owens sisters two daughters}
yyyyyyyyyy is sleeping with even eugine buckly
eugine is married to fffffff
fffffff is sleeping with xxxxxxx
xxxxxx is the fther to both fffffffff’s daughters :maddalind elianna buckley{13} and shannon breeanna xxxxxx{ }
fffffff give xxxxxx shanon to keep him satisfied as her side piece {hes a dick to her but never violent}
eugine thinks hes maddies father but that shannon was the resault of an assult and that xxxxxx his brother volunteered to take the girl as a favor to them.
Eugine raises maddie to hate shannon without being overt.}}}
mean while owen takes the children home{strickland family home 14 generations} an begins moving them into tylers{9} room .
The room has a bunkbed and a foldout bed for when owens sisters kids spend the night.
He sets robin up on the bottom buck and gives lynn the pullout{knowing that the girl will feel guilty putting robin on the couch and ty already has the top bunk} he notices that the adults arnt let near the kids bags but they dont push.
tyler gets home and is a bit miffed at sudden new siblings but when he wakes from a nightmare that night things change.
Tyler wakes crying as robin shakes him out of a nightmare of his of owen dieing in a fire and robin pulls him into a tight hug until he calms and falls asleep on his shoulder.
Robin stays up the whole night petting tys hair and keeping the nightmares away.
The next day :oswife: takes the two shopping to get batheing suits so that they can join tyler in his swimming clases. While owen redos the room.
He takes out the pullout and puts in a second bunk bed that lynn will later take the top bunk of on a day to day basis {when owens neices are over lynn moves into robins, robin will sleep with tommy and leave the other bunk for them two girls.
While the two were trying on suits that day :oswife: notices marks on their shoulders {;;;;; tattoos disguised as henna that denotes their toma heritage and their ://: heir status due to her own toma heritage.}
owen adds lockers for all three kids and his neices on lynns sugestion
robin and ty are estatic and robin begins to feel at home fully.
Over the next few months the kids all grow closeer
while lynn adores ty ty clings to robin so much that owen takes to calling robin tys teddy bear after only two months of them living there. 3/14/2000
:oswife:takes to trying to fatten the two up {shes italian creole and toma food is a religion to her and they quickly bond over her teaching them to ccok and them eating together
on 4/13/2000 :oswife catches robin teaching ty sweadish and gaelic and as a resault she takes all three children to get tested for school{their homeschooled but she wants to know if she should be giving them harder material all three test extrodinarily high and get scholership offers but decline it so that they can stay home.
Eveything continues on from that point with :oswife: teaching the kids her familial recipees {something she excludes owen from though he gets to eat the resault} ant the three children making friends with the boys next door{ooooo19/iiiiiii13/wwwww11}
they celebrate the twos birthdays on 9/31/2000
the year ends well for them all.
The next year goes much the same until september
9/10/2001 the three kids and owens neices and the next door neighbor boys are at a sleep over in the strickland home and go to bed early sincetylers 10thvbirthday is the next day.
9/11/2001 the towers are hit
and owen looses his entire crew when one of the floors collapses {owen was pushed out of the way which is the only reason he surrvives}
9/11/2001 to 1/04/2002 the family and the city struggle and owen greives
owen trying hard to take care of all his guys familys {causes an argument with :oswife: as ty and the kids need him to}
on 1/04/2002 owen overhears robin asking one of the neighbor boy if he was going to die to. Oens listens as robin explains that his baba was a fire fighter to that he got hurt got sad started drinking and died in the fire that killed his ma’i’ia and left the two kids homeless.
Owen tosses his alchohal less then an houur later.
Later that week while he and :oswife: are setting things up to move all of his crews widows and children into the blocked off wing of the strickland home when they overhear lynn calling :oswife: mi’ada and she tells owen that it means{a second mother that chooses a child and takes them in as their own without attachments to the biologicl parents} and while talking about it all they realize that in all the comotion they had missed the kids birthdays {the kids didnt say anything as they didnt want to further stress them out}.
Ashamed owen asks them what they want for their late birthday present.
Lynn and tyler ask for books {medical texts} and robin asks for a storage locker for their bags outside the home.
Owen gives them all what they asked for {though he has to bite his tounge to keep from asking what is in the bags as they are packed away} (lynn and rodin pack awayall but lynns bag robins bag and their babas work bag{all in all their parents jewelry documents toma artifacts :///: and nash herilooms paperwork {bucksgmas}books ma’i’ia’s phone computor jewelry box and keys the safes contents ma’i’ia’s religious wear pictures tech and their emotional items{stuffed animals} are packed away while their clothes hardrives and granpas medal box are kept in their personal lockers}
everything goes fine until 12/13/2004 when lynn{14}collapses at school and is found to be pregnant.
{meanwhile yyyyyyyyy and eugine ‘just had a child together’{the childs father is one of yyyyyy’s clients not eugine} and yyyyyyy drops the baby off at eugines doorstep not wanting a ‘gimp’ as the child was born with a form of cerbal palsy}
[the baby is matthew eugine buckley ffff left eugine after the clearly biracial matthew shwed up. She stays with xxx and shannon and leaves maddie behind without a care.]
Yyyy jumps on it and arrives at their home THAT day.
Lynn{14} swears that the baby is wwww’s{15}[her boyfriend]
but yyyyyy dosent belive her
on seeing this robin sneaks away into their room and packs the three bags and usees the bike locks to make sure the bags cant be opened without their permission {not trusting yyyyy}
the bags are tear proof fire proof water proof ect
{he puts their necklaces up in tys locker}
yyyy tells lyn that shes being sent to a special hospital for underage mothers
lynn says shes not goingnot trusting her
lynn and robin end up being dragged from the home by yyyys brother{a cop} screaming for their mi’ada papa and tyler/ty the whole time.
Yyyyy informs :oswife: that she must kick owen out that night untill the investigation ends or she’ll take tyler as well with barely hidden glee.
Owen packs his bags and moves ou under yyyys watch
she then leaves with the three locked bags
yyyy dosent know about robins hermaphrodite status as he wears a special bandage like item over his feminine bits that hides it all well {marcy got it for him to make raiseing him as a boy abit easier
yyyyyyy drags a distraught robin to even eugine buckleys home where she all but flings him into the nursery and locks the door behind him.
While she takes the bags to eugine robin notices that theres a new born baby in the room with him.
With nothing else to do he picks the now crying baby up and begins to soothe him noticeing the bruises all over him and the leg brace and being extra carefull with the little one and glances around the room. He finds a vial of medicine with the name matthew eugine buckley on it and assumes that its the babys name. The vials paper work is next to it. He reads through it quickley and realizes that its and anti seizure med and that the baby needs it three times a day.
He checks the boy finds no needle marks and is concerned. He KNOWS the resaults of not taking such a medication but isnt sure that its the babies medication so he cant do anything.
Meanwhile yyy has dropped the bags with eugine and left to check lynn into the hospital.
Eugine spends hours trying to get them open before giving up and locking them in a safe in the basement. Then he leaves to pick maddalind up from one of his friends [where he sent her to deal with her mother leaving].
He returns hours later nd in that time matthew had had a seizure and robin had been forced to resuscitate him after he stopped breathing{thankfull for owens lessens} and had given the baby a dose following the instructions on the paperwork.
Eugine sends maddie to handle settleing robin in, maddie finds the door shut but asumes its an accident and unlocks it. She find robin paceing the room with mattie{2 weeks} with a finger on his pulse.
She asks what happened [shes been away two weeks] and robin explains whats happened since he got there.
Maddie checks the baby over {she knew about maddie but hadent met him face to face} and aftbeing assured that the child will be okay she gos to her father and asks him when mattie got the new meds
eugine explains that he had never seen him have a seizure so he hadnt given him the meds and apologizesfor worrying her.
Maddie returns and packs both kids into her care and takes them to the hospital so that matthew can be checked over.
Hes admited and released two days later after his meds are evened out
maddie takes mattie and robin home that day to find yyyyy and eugine at the kitchen table changing robin and lynns names legally speaking{12/15/2004} robin and lynn become evan eugine buckley and nionna ann buckley “so that they will fit in better with maddie and mattie”
yyyyy leaves and updates lynn/nionna on the name change.
lynn/nionna { } refuses to answear to the new name and after trying to escape she is sedated and spends the rest of her pregnancy heavily drugged due to her “inapropriate” “agressive” and “dleusional” behavior {by 12/15/2004 shes six mths pregnant}
on 12/23/2004 lynn/nionna gos into labour way to early and gives birth to a stillborn daughter.
Yyyyyyy wont let her see the baby or even know the gender and drops her at the buckly home three hours later still druged and out of it.
The misscariage is listed as a resault of the mothers illicit drug use
in reality yyyyyyyyy had given the baby to aaaaaaa and sent a sample of the girls dna in to ‘catch owen’ so she can take tyler
however the dna clears owen
on hearing this via phone call while driving crashes into another carefullyyyyyy and aaaa die instantly but lynns daughter “alexi” was lleft unscathed.
Alexi winds up with aaaaa’s daughter hhhh whos 22 as she is listed as aaaaa’s biological childrenalexi is raised well from then on.{same day}{12/23/2004}
on 1/12/2005 cps sends another worker out to the buckly house.
eugine quickley bribes the man to sign off on him keeping both children and he is awarded full custody.
On 1/14/2005 alexi’s dna clears owen.
While this means owen can go back home with his wife and son he and :oswife:cant get robin or lynn back as they were oficaily adopted and cps wont give them any information about the children or who has them only that they are settled in and that they cant be moved again noteing that the stricklands were still negligent in their care of lynn.
Owen is told by the agent {who is involved with hhhh} that lynns daughter alexi is safe but wont let him see her or even send her letters {owen gets suspicius that something bad has happened to HIS kids.
Tyler had been devestated by the loss of his siblings and cant stand to hear his name {tyler or ty} and has been going by tk since a few days after they were taken.
Owen focuses on raiseing tk and finding HIS kids {keeping the locker paid up just in case though he never looks into the bags} while :oswife: leaves tk withhis father and focusses on her job to deal with her greif.
Meanwhile 1/15/2005 is the last visit that cps makes to the buckleys due to another bribe by eugene {his perfect maddie needs siblings}.
Shortly after ariveing lynn/nionna{14} dissapears.
Eugine claims she ran away for drugs but in reality hes locked her away in to basement
maddie believes eugines story about the basement being caved in and filled with cement to keep the house from following suit.
Things go realitivly alright for the next four months:
-----eugine is gruff and cold towards evan{12} and matthew{>1} but trys to be pleasant to maddalind fffff{17} {his golden child} though he does loose his temper with her sometimes
-----any time he looses his temper he take evan “fishing” {drags him to the little shed on the lake in fffffthe back of the property and beats him bloody from his shoulders to his hips where his clothes fffffwill hide them}
-----evan dosent tell and does his best to hide it as eugine threatens mathew while he beats him with fffffthe switch{and cause evan dosent want to cost maddie and mathew another parent knowing how fffffit feels} [he thinks he can handle it and escape with mattie and track his sister down.]
This continues until 5/12/2005 when maddalind goes to visit her mother ffff shannon and uncle xxx{who married her mother a week prior}.
Its a four month trade off.
In her absence eugine goes from cold distant and a bit harsh to a creul callous monster and the house[not a home] turns into hell
the beatings become a daily occurrenc
on 9/13/2005 eugine fractures evans {l/r}ight kneecap and left him on the kitchen floor.
Matthew starts crying
eugine leaves to go out with his friends
evan drags himself to matties room and forces himself upright using his good leg and the wall picks him up and slides back down focussing on the baby to block out the pain{like all toma/nontoma boys he has a weird issue with pain only able to feel pain when the injury damages a bone}.
This is the scene maddie returns home to evan passed out with mattie on his chest his knee swollen and purple.
She drives them to the er and calls eugine
eugine arrives and claims that evan had fallen but that he didnt think it was that bad.{he tells evan that he knew where lynn/nionna is but that if he didnt behave hed kill her.}
After three days evan is sent home.
At which point eugine cuts back on the hits and bruiseing to sheild maddalind from the trueth {in his mind hes training the boy to be the perfect brother} and the most she ever sees is eugine smack evan for being disrespectful{not looking up when he talks/mumbleing/backtalking}.
Maddie thinks nothing of evans shyness and lack of acting out as shes never seen him be any different.
In reality while eugine had cut down on the overt violence his new favorite method for taining up evan is horrific but evans act is flawles as he works best under pressure and the threats to mattie and lynn/nionna and the precived risk to maddies happiness put him basically in mission mode.
Eugines abuse had turned sexual but since the only time he went full out he did so in the dark of evans room{so he couldnt anticipate what was coming} he never notices the patch or what hides behind it, something evan is gratefull for.
The first time he takes a sample from evan and puts it in a proper freezer in his truck {heworks at a fertility clinic} {so that he can make anotther pet} {evan dosent register what he was doing as he was out of it at the time.}
By evans 13th birthday on 10/31/2005 he is matthews{1} full time carer and administrates all his meds as maddie 18 is often out looking at schools.
This continues for the next three years.
10/31/2008
maddie{21} visits for evans 16the birthday bringing her boyfreind doug with her.
That night eugine ups the abuse and makes matthew{almost 4} watch.
The next day evan pulls maddie to the side and asks that she not bring up his birthday ever again.
Shes confused but gos with it.
Then she heads back to collage.
On 12/14/2008 eugine finds out that evan{16} had been ‘spoiling’ matthew{4} when he catches the boy giving him a sponge bath [hes been giving him sponge baths as the boy is deathly afraid of bodies of water {though hes at least desenseitized him to glasses of it} and his panic attacks will trigger his seizures even when hes properly medicated and his seizures still cause arithmyias]{mattie has has 12 ‘heart attacks by age four}] and flips out.
He stalks over and decks even hard knocking him out.
Then he drahs the unconcius sixteen year old and the shakeing terrorfied four year outside down to the lakes peir.
He drops mat on the ground and hes to petrifeid to run as eugine teis evan to the peir
then he waits for evan to wait.
Once he comes to eugine lifts mat off the deck and THROW him into the lake.
Evan PLEADS and BEGS even breaking his wrist trying to get to mattie.
Just as mattie passes out eugine knocks evan out again.
He drags mattie to shore and resusitates him quickly not wanting to loose a toy and shove the catatonic boy into a box in the back of his truck.
Then he drags evan back inside this time he dosent hit the lights before starting in on evan.
As a resault he finds the patch and removes it.
On seeing what it hides he invites three of his friends over to have a turn.
This gos on for six hours evan going in and out of conciusness the whole time.
After his friends leave eugine leaves for texas where fff xxx shannon and maddie are leaving evan broken and bleeding and lynn/nionna tied up in the basement.
Evan wakes the next day barely able to move between the pain and the greif but forces himself up right to get to lynn/nionna but he cant get into the basement as its locked.
He goes back up and showers to clear his head, then he dresses and searches the house.
He nearly gives up before he finds the keys on the kitchen floor {they must have fell out as eugine left}, and invigorated by something like hopeevan grabs the keys and races as fast as he can back down to the basement where he unlocks the door.
He finds her chained and quickly unlocks her and carefully guides her upstairs and lays her on maddies bed.
That done he goes to maddies closet and ueses her pratice bandages to imobilize his wrist. Then he goes back to the basement, unlocks the safe and grabs the bags{hes shocked to find that lynns birthstone necklace is in one of the bags side pockets sans flashdrive but ignores it}.
Then he finds that when he packed away his babas jacket he must have lost the name tag as its gone but the bag and lock are both intact. He packs the bags into fff’s abandoned car and then he goes through the house collecting everything related to him lynn maddie and matthew {so that eugene cant toss them}and anything worth anything as a way to pay for their escape as well as anything useful to them. Then he packs lynn into the passenger seat and climbs into the drivers side and takes off not sure where hes going just unable to stop running once he starts {thankful for :oswifes: driving lessons}
together lynn and robin wind up back in newyork.{12/17/2008}

A second later before he can say anything he hears a woman screaming “get away from my son”
he shoots up and steps in front of matthew as the woman comes close but before he can say anything mattie signs to her ‘thats MY even’

she comes close and buck expects her to slap him but instead she flings herslef at him and hugs him tight.
She introduces herself as shannon breeanna jjjjjjjj and invites him to her home.
Shanons inlaws are steying with her at the base house shes in but are out for errends at the time.
Shannon and buck talk for hours and when shannon mentions that shes worried that eugine will come for mattie buck quickley inacts a plan.
He pulls out his ma’i’ia’s computor and changes the boys legal name and history {he becomes matthew tarein price} a boy who is legally speaking the adoptive child of shannon and buck after eugine surrenderd his rights {fakeing the paperwork}.
While shannon adores mattie the boy clings to buck and is more active with him then he had ever been with her.
As a resault the two agree that buck will have primary custody of the boy.
They trade numbers and agree to keep in constant contact.
Then buck takes mattie to his apartment nearby.
Shannon tells the diazs that mattie went to his older brother whos could care for him better {financially and emotionally so that she can focus on her comeing baby and both children will be better for it}.
Ramon and helenna are a bit pissed but dont speak their oopinions{she threw a child away in their eyes leading to outward hostillity and blatent distencing}.
Peppa who was visiting better understands it when she hands her a recording of buck and evan{evans face blurred out}.

The Real Truth behind Yahoo Boys Using The Panties Of Ladies For Rituals
The panties of a popular American video vixen and model, Symba and that of her friend were reportedly stolen at a hotel in Lekki, Lagos State by one of the hotel cleaners. File Photo In the month of October, 2018, a young man with dreadlocks who claimed to be abroad raised an alarm about internet fraudsters doing rituals with the panties of ladies to spiritually empower them to enjoy easy windfalls from scams.' According to him, the panties were sold at the black market from the price range of N200,000 to N350,000 depending on how much residues/body fluids they contained. Only a few people took him serious. Netizens laughed about it in the comment section of the Instagram page. A few days later, the man's revelation started gaining traction in the media. Reports of people stealing panties from washing lines started emerging with confessions made by culprits mostly in the face of jungle justice. In December, the panties of a popular American video vixen and model, Symba and that of her friend were reportedly stolen at the Villa Thirty Three Hotel in Lekki, Lagos State by one of the hotel cleaners. She raised the alarm on social media and immediately, the ladies got the message that the desperate hunt for their panties was real. The internet fraudsters who are majorly young men were fingered in the diabolic act of wicked ritualism. According to reports, the implication of this is that the victim whose panties were used for rituals might fall sick, die mysteriously, run mad or be bewitched with ill-luck till her last day on earth. The situation seems worse in Delta State with gunmen allegedly robbing women of their underwear. But how true are these stories? Hope they are not one of these periodic social media hoaxes that are click baits set by bloggers and online journalists hungry for traffic? Nigeria’s social media space and its penchant for fake news Nigerians have an unimpressive record of wilfully spreading fake and odd news. A section of the country once spread rumours that there was a sinister plan by the ruling All Progressives Congress to islamize Nigeria and turn it into a country like Turkey. You can also remember how rumours emanated from the South-East geo-political zone in 2017 that the Nigerian Army was using a medical exercise to inject poison/monkeypox virus into the people to depopulate the South-East against the 2019 general election. We have also heard unfounded claims of people picking monies on the ground and turning into yam tubers or other objects which are easily stashed away but the culprits who planted it. What about the issue of 'killer phone number or phone call'? A strange number calls your line and immediately you respond to the call, you start to vomit blood and die. Another close one that was popular in Ibadan where this reporter grew up is 'manhood theft'. A stranger will accost you in public space to ask for direction and the next minute after your response, your manhood shrinks. Just of late, people believe there are piggy banks (kolo) that are laced with juju. The money saved in them will gradually disappear without your knowledge. All these and many more are spread from mouth to mouth and on social media with people taking it hook line and sinker without any empirical evidence. But the moment you try to verify the report, the proponents feel uneasy due to lack of substance and begin to retrace their steps. As the story of a lady who vomited naira notes at the Effurun market area of Uvwie local government area of Warri, Delta State after her pant was allegedly stolen at her residence few weeks ago pervaded the internet space, fear gripped female folks especially the ones who discreetly sell their bodies on the internet. Wearing panties to the house of a man you don’t trust has become a high risk. People became vigilant about the young men with unsubstantiated sources of wealth in their neighbourhoods also called the ‘Benz or Nothing Boys’ on social media due to their affinity with exotic Mercedes Benz automobiles. Using the panties of ladies isn’t part of our line of trade – Yahoo Boys As this reporter enjoyed the ambience of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on his way back to his home-city for the Yuletide, he thought about the panties rituals and was determined to get to the root of the issue due to the fact that most of the journalists who have worked on the stories lack optimism in their reportage. Yahoo Boys are not ghosts, they live around us. We grew up with some of them. They share their scam escapades and proceeds at beer parlours, club houses and social gatherings in the midst of like-minds. They are very approachable as long as you are not a security operative and the principle of confidentiality is assured. I got a couple of phone numbers and started to set up interviews with them on the craze of panties being used for black magic. It was a very herculean task but funny enough the Yahoo Boys I spoke with were willing to talk. I even got referrals to other fraudsters for necessary information. To my greatest shock, the several seemingly established ‘hustlers’ as they call themselves claimed to have heard the rumours on social media. Most of them admitted that internet fraud had taken a spiritual dimension a long time ago but the issue of panties being used at the detriment of the owner was out of place. “Your questions are very funny; I haven’t heard such news of the pant ritual on the street (among friends). just like you, I read it online. I know boys do juju so that their magas (victims) could pay big cash on time but the reported fate of the victims is synonymous to pure blood money” a suspected scammer of South-east descent who spoke under the condition of anonymity told this reporter. Not satisfied, the reporter was able to set up a meeting with another young man in his early thirties who is in the illicit business. He paraded one of the latest iPhones, Apple laptop, jewelleries. He spoke to this reporter with a wrap of weed on one hand, a mixture of unknown alcoholic substance on the other with mostly ladies constantly interrupting the brief interview with phone calls. After being assured of his safety a second time, he slowly started singing like a bird. “I can boldly tell you that most of the guys out there are pure ritualists and not Yahoo Boys. They know nothing about this work. My old friend who has no email address bought a Maserati car worth N60 million. I don’t know if you know the car....he is based in South Africa. I have asked him to give me tips for work but his brain is empty. People close to him have told me that he only uses his laptop for Facebook. I suspect pure blood money as he isn’t doing drugs. He comes to Nigeria periodically maybe to renew his jazz (hoodoo). People will think such a guy is doing Yahoo but I doubt bro. That’s the problem we are dealing with” he said. When probed further about the infusion of black magic with internet scam, he admitted that voodoo plays a huge role in the criminal industry. “I nor fit lie you, juju dey and people dey use am wella. Most of these herbalists have a book of spells and they can make such charms to jinx white people. The problem is that most of them are fake. I have done some in the past but they never worked for me. I still believe in pure hard work and I know very successful guys in Lagos who own properties here and there doing fraud without juju” he added. He further explained that some herbalists use human skulls recovered from burial grounds, tongues of human beings, breasts and other parts to make potions. According to his account, these materials are grinded into power to make soaps, drinks or food for the scammer and a procedure is followed to bring good luck. He accused the “Benz Boy” of indulging in that level of fraud to cater for their flamboyant lifestyles. This reporter also spoke with another very wealthy young man, an Osun State native in his mid thirties who shuttles between Nigeria and Malaysia. He is happily married with two kids. He owns several cars, landed properties and businesses used as fronts for fraud. He abruptly denied having any knowledge of the panties ritual. “Internet scam has been around in Nigeria for almost two decades now and the issue of panties of women being used for money never came up until recently. What is so special about the panties of ladies? I’m in touch with guys and I have never met or heard of one using the panties of ladies to attract goodwill. That’s pure blood money and my mind tells me the politicians might be involved. This is an election season and desperate politicians need spiritual powers to play dirty politics” he alleged. This reporter came close to making a breakthrough in meeting two victims of the panties wizardry when he spoke with one partly uncooperative hustler around the Ologuneru area of Ibadan who initially insulted the reporter. On being quizzed on the issue, he mocked the journalist during the telephone interview. “Guy you dey mad oh!, which kain question be this one na? Who tell you say I dey press?” he asked amid laughter. When the journalist explained the objective of the investigation to him and how he had spoken with his colleagues with much progress made, he toned down his utterances. “I have never seen any guy using the pants of ladies. Apart from what we read on Instablog (Nigeria’s popular microblog on Instagram), no one has ever informed me that it’s the new method of making cash or that someone he knows is involved. The reports are very strange to us. Most of the guys doing such are into blood money and not Yahoo Yahoo. I can assure you. Thats all I know” he said. He later called this reporter to tell him about two ladies whose panties were reportedly used for rituals. According to the rumours he heard, the young ladies slept with the big boys for money and ended up in the hands of the ritualists. He was told the ladies started falling sick later on with their bodies shrinking and oozing a foul smell. All efforts to speak with the purported victims failed as people contacted had uneasily feelings about the reportage. Youths now follow Ifa (West African religion and system of divination) for financial benefits The reporter also met a 25-year old alumnus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. The school is famed for housing some of the most notorious fraudsters in the South-western part of the country. Segun Quadri (not real name) drives a Lexus 350 jeep; he has built his own house and has invested in fish farming. He has a start-up that sells fish feed on a large-scale. He looks so innocent and no one would ever suspect he is into to internet fraud. He also claimed ignorance about the panties voodoo. “I don’t believe any Yahoo Boy is using the panties of any woman. It’s all fake news. Most of the stories are hard to prove. The major problem is that most people are now into money-making rituals. That is not internet fraud. There are some rituals that you will do to prosper whatever you lay your hands on. On the conclusion of the spiritual exercise, the native doctor asks you to go start any business. Even if it means selling ordinary slippers, you will become rich and famous from that cheap venture” Segun narrated as he swung his car keys in the air as if he was coordinating a group of choristers in a church. “People in Lagos are now ‘doing Ifa’, the process is very deep and hard to explain. It’s like joining a secret cult. When you do, worshipping Ifa becomes your second religion. It doesn’t disturb the first one. It’s like joining the illuminati. You just have to admit that you now have a second god in your life” he added. His narration reminded the reporter of one popular and super rich suspected internet fraudster named Femi at the Jericho area of Ibadan of Ibadan who was purportedly caught performing a ritual in the middle of the night at a three-way junction. According to reports, he was dressed in all-white clothes. The suspect later admitted openly that he is an Ifa worshipper who has refused to align with Christianity or Islam. The reporter asked him if these Ifa faithful he described are engaged in rituals in the class of what Femi did and he affirmatively said no. “You don’t have to perform such rituals except you need certain powers. These Ifa faithful are given some fetish structures they simply worship in their houses. Mostly, they are given a calabash containing other spiritual materials. You will pray on it and pour a quantity of palm oil inside of it as part of the rites involved. The palm oil is expected to dry up before the day ends. This in turn brings good luck to the worshiper” he said. When asked about clues to identifying members of the Ifa confraternity, he spoke further; “Some of these Ifa members only wear white dresses. Their cars are white, houses have the same colour and most of their belongings. They will tell you they have some sort of obsession with that colour but it’s not true. Most of them have forbidden food materials like fish, snail, pig, cow meat and others. Eating these has become a taboo for them. Their wealth could cease if they break the rules” he emphatically stated. After enjoying Segun’s utmost cooperation, the reporter felt indebted and couldn’t summon courage to ask him about his personal involvement in black magic. Rumours have it that his early success might have come directly from the devil’s altar. People are truly using the panties of women for juju – native doctor A native doctor who also spoke on the issue under the condition of anonymity due to its sensitive nature claims the panties of female folks are actually being utilized by unscrupulous elements for rituals. According to him, it’s a very potent source of the Midas touch in life. “The panties of women are actually being used by Yahoo Boys. The panties work for different things depending on the wish of the person in question. It’s capable of unlocking the destiny of the ritualist. He stands a good chance of being prosperous in whatever he lays his hands on be it business or internet scam. I will not lie to you, people are indeed using the underwear of women for rituals” he said. Written exclusively for Tori News by Osayimwen Osahon George via Blogger http://bit.ly/2rZvLO5

Girls Campaign to End Child Marriage
New Post has been published on http://www.vennomax.com/global-goals/girls-campaign-to-end-child-marriage/
Girls Campaign to End Child Marriage
The world has made incredible progress in the fight against poverty, but progress has not been spread equally or fairly. Millions of girls continue to be married as children, miss out on basic education, and die from preventable causes.
Every 7 seconds, a girl under 15 is married. Child marriage continues to be one of the greatest barriers that prevents girls from realising their full potential. It curtails their education, exposes them and their children to increased risks in childbirth, and limits their opportunities for the future. And, every day more than 20,000 girls are married illegally. This is why Save the Children is campaigning to end child marriage and ensure all girls have access to quality education and healthcare.
On October 23-25, 2017, Global Goals team are co-hosting the High-Level Meeting on Ending Child Marriage in Dakar, Senegal. This meeting will bring together representatives from governments in West and Central Africa, donor governments, youth advocates and community leaders to discuss how we can accelerate progress and end child marriage in our lifetime.
You can take action by pledging your support for girls education. When girls are out of school, they are vulnerable to child marriage, trafficking and child labour.
Save the Children also believes that children should be at the centre of our campaigns. Below are the stories of inspiring girl champions who are working in their communities to end child marriage and ensure all girls have access to quality education and healthcare.
Meet Maryam from Nigeria
I am campaigning to end to child marriage and sexual abuse, and to ensure girls have access to education and reproductive rights. For the past four years, I have worked with various organizations and the media to promote the wellbeing of girls. I organise discussions with adolescent girls where they talk about issues they face.I use my voice to hold government accountable. I produce songs and speak at forums on girls health and education. I am a youth reporter and the leader of the Chibok girl’s ambassadors, where I organised marches demanding the release of the Chibok girls.
I would like my community to change the mindset about educating girls because educating and empowering girls is one of the best ways to eradicate poverty. I would also like my community to change their views on child marriage, because it leads to many health challenges for girls.
I am calling on our leaders to include us when making decisions that affect our lives. I urge them to set up programs that will remove social barriers that limit us or hurt us, and to establish laws and policies that protect our rights.
I will be 30 when the Sustainable Development Goals will end. This means my generation is responsible for holding leaders accountable for delivering these goals. By investing in my health, my education and my decision making capacity, the cycle of poverty can be broken and all of the sustainable development goals can be achieved simply by empowering me to reach my full potential.
Our campaign in Nigeria
In Nigeria, we are campaigning to ensure that child, early and forced marriage is reduced and girls and boys are able to fulfil their equal rights. In Nigeria, 39% of girls are married before they are 18 and 16% are married before they turn 15. Our campaign is aimed at advancing the knowledge and skills of boys, girls, families, and communities through equitable access to education, vocational skills, and life skills training, with a focus on leadership, child rights, and gender equality as a strategy towards ending child marriage in Nigeria.
Meet Tshidi from South Africa
I come from a community plagued by poverty where many girls turn to older men to provide for them. Girls as young as 13 have sex with older men for cellular air-time, food or clothes.
Girls are being taught that their future is to become somebody’s wife and that is it. Even their own mothers encourage them to get married young rather than pursue their studies as studying requires money. Teenage pregnancy is a major concern as girls look for love in all the wrong places. But also, sell their bodies for money and material things.
Young people have potential, guide and show them the path that they are supposed to walk. Give them opportunities regardless of where they come from. Give them the chance to show their abilities.
Strong role models are highly effective. Young girls relate better to a peer rather than to a poster or an expert. For example, while volunteering at a local community clinic, I met a 14-year-old girl, named Lereto*, who left home. She was an alcoholic, not attending school and sleeping with older men for money. I helped her by counselling her. I also met with her mother and encouraged her get closer to her daughter and communicating with her more. Today, Lereto* is back at school. She has returned home to live with her mother. She would like to become a social worker when she finishes school. This makes me very proud.
Our Campaign in South Africa
In South Africa, young girls are the most effected by violence particularly sexual violence. It is the norm and many cases go unreported. From accessing school to seeking out medical care young girls are surrounded by perpetrators. For young girls lucky enough to access school, challenges such exposure to sexiest taunting and rape on their way are highly likely possibilities. Adding to these violations is the high probability of contracting HIV/AIDS through sexual assault. To address this serious concern, Save the Children South Africa, has mobilised civil society, government and community forums to ensure every last girl child is kept safe from harm. Our 5-year campaign is aimed at reducing violence against children including sexual violence against young girls. Through community dialogues, corporate investment, pressure on local municipality to improve infrastructure and resources, and active engagement with young children we envision an end to violence against children.
Meet Moni from Bangladesh
I am campaigning to end child marriage and to promote facility delivery so that every mother can deliver at a health facility. I’ve seen the problems that are associated with child marriage very closely. Teenage girls become pregnant, maternal health is threatened, and their children’s health is also threatened. In my village, many girls are married off before 18, they drop out of their school
Instead of getting married in their teens, girls should be encouraged to grow and educate themselves because they have immense potential in the future Bangladesh. They need the support of the society and their families to grow with equal opportunity. They need access to adequate health care facilities to avoid preventable deaths of mothers and the children.
I want the government to have stronger policies against child marriage. I want the government to end child marriage. The government should have better girl’s enrollment projects in education, so that they are incentivized to study and grow with equal opportunities. I also want the government to provide more health facilities and improve access to these health facilities so that every mother can deliver safely at a health facility, and every child can be born at a health facility.
The community must address the fact that child marriage is prevalent and must take measures to end it. The community must also address the fact that many mother and children are dying from preventable deaths, due to the lack of adequate health facilities in the community. Every mother should have access to a health facility and be able to delivery at a health facility. The community must incorporate the opinions of the youths — they are the future.
Our Campaign in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, we are campaigning for girls and boys living in remote and rural areas. These children and their families lack access to quality healthcare and education. In Sylhet division, for example, only 21% of births take place at health facilities. This is why we are promoting differential health programming and investments for children in deprived areas. We are also campaigning to involve communities in preventing child marriage and violence against children. Today in Bangladesh, 59% of girls are married before their 18th birthday.
Meet Halima from Malawi
I am campaigning to end child marriage and for all girls to attend school. Due to poverty and some beliefs, girls are forced to go into marriage so their parents can concentrate on fending for their younger siblings or boys.
I was married off at 15 to a man double my age. But I didn’t want to get married, I wanted to go to school. Instead, I had to cook and fetch water for my husband and his family. I tried my best and got out of the marriage and went back to school. Now I work with a girls group and have helped 10 girls like me return to school. I hope to be Minister of Education one day.
Communities need to change their attitude towards girls’ education, I normally have a tough time when I go to visit girls that are not going to school, some parents shower insults at us, it becomes so frustrating at times, but I will not stop.
In addition to child marriage, girls miss school for many other reasons. Most girls miss school when its their time for monthly periods. They don’t have sanitary pads and facilities so they prefer staying home. Their families also struggle to afford school fees, so most girls drop out and fail to continue with their secondary education. The government needs to help girls attend school.
Our campaign in Malawi
In Malawi, we are campaigning for children living in the most remote areas, especially adolescent girls. These children lack access to basic health, education and child protection services. 20% of girls have experienced sexual abuse and half of all girls are married before the age of 18. While the minimum age of marriage was raised from 15 to 18 in 2015, until the Constitution is amended, the age can still be contested in courts. We are campaigning to ensure the age of marriage is enforced. We are also campaigning to ensure adequate budget is spent on health and education for all children.
Meet Rana from Yemen
I am campaigning for girls’ right to learn and be educated. Our society is not fully aware of the importance of educating girls. They say girls should only learn how to cook and clean as they will become wives and that it is their only duty in life.
I am also campaigning against child marriage, which prevents girls from going to school. Here in Yemen, customs and traditions don’t support a girl’s education. For instance, some people believe that a girl seeking an education means that she is escaping her responsibility to get married and be a good wife. In some villages, communities think it is a disgrace when families educate their girls.
I am one of the children who is being affected by this war. I was displaced from my city along with my family. I want to deliver a message to the world to end the war. Because of the war there is now no income. Parents see it as an extra burden to send their girls to school especially if they need to pay for transportation, books, notebooks, uniforms, etc., and when they do have a little money they would prefer to give it for the boys’ education.
I think girls and boys should be treated equally and that girls’ future is beyond knowing how to cook and clean. Girls want to be someone in the future and we can only do so if we study and learn.
Our campaign in Yemen
In Yemen, we are campaigning to ensure all girls have access to quality education in a safe and protective environment, especially those that have been affected by conflict. The conflict in Yemen has devastating the lives of over 10 million children who are now in need of humanitarian assistance. As of January 2017, 1.5 million children have been forced to flee their homes and nearly 2,000 schools are out of action because they are destroyed or damaged, sheltering displaced families, or are being used for military purposes. Approximately 2 million of school age children do not have access to school, with girls being the most affected.
Meet Aissata from Mali
In my community, I have been campaigning for children, especially girls, access to quality education, keeping them in school and protecting them. Children and young people are the lifeblood of every nation and it is essential that they have access to education and are protected. This, because education is the basis for human development and for me, it is essential to create all the necessary conditions to guarantee all children have a bright future.
Very early on, I was engaged in the Children’s Parliament where I was focusing on promoting and defending the rights of a child. This has allowed me to be involved in and become aware of the difficulties that innocent beings face. After leaving the Children’s Parliament, my engagement continued through the National Advisory Council of Children and Youth.
The most important problem that must be addressed by my community is that of keeping children, especially girls in school, training and technical and financial support for young entrepreneurs.
I would like to see the Government of Mali effectively implement a policy for all girls to be enrolled in education and complete school. In my community, I would not like to see girls dropping out of school or not enrolling. Moreover, I would like that through education, no girl has an early or unwanted pregnancy. Finally, I would like to see more leadership and empowerment of girls.
Our campaign in Mali
In Mali, we’re campaigning for the most deprived girls and boys. Specifically, we are campaigning to end child marriage. While the country has made great progress, child marriage still remains a huge concern. 55% of girls are married before they turn 18 – the legal age of marriage in Mali is 16 for girls and 18 for boys. Our campaign aims to both increase the age of marriage for girls and ensure accountability.
Meet Anielka from Nicaragua
I lead workshops with adolescents, on the prevention of teenage pregnancy. I am part of the Network of Girls in my municipality, and in my community I develop workshops with girls about self-esteem, sexuality, gender equality and empowerment. I also organize theatre groups with children and adolescents, where we identify the problems of our community and then introduce it to the community through a play.
Girls in my community don’t receive support from their parents. There is teenage pregnancy and not all girls in my community finish school. Some girls suffer from physical abuse and there are no recreational spaces for girls.
I am also a literature entertainer: at the community’s school where I read stories to children. I like reading to children, because with the book they can learn, understand, be better. My wish is that all children fall in love with reading, to see it is fun and useful to learn.
What inspires me is that we can achieve change; letting girls and boys know they can raise their voices and defend their rights. That all those barriers that are preventing us from fulfilling our dreams may disappear and thus contribute to a better future for the children. A future in which they can make their dreams come true, with better opportunities and a better life.
If I were president I would designate more resources to the rural area because this is where most children do not have access to quality education and their rights are not respected. I think that when there is investment in childhood you can create a better future for each child. Children can continue in school, study and have a better life.
Our campaign in Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, we are campaigning for girls and boys who are living in rural areas and missing out on healthcare and education. We are supporting central and local governments to increase investment in children in rural areas. We are ensuring public policies on education, health and protection of children in rural areas are implements.

CELEBRATION OF A LIFE OF A GREAT AND HUMBLE MAN.....DAVID WOLKOWSKY
A few months ago, Key West’s premier citizen David Wolkowsky passed on. Today, his life is being celebrated.
There will be joy. David made it to 99. He led a good and successful life. Performed wonders for his community and its citizens.
Acquired the title Mr. Key West along the way. I personally labeled him the Father of Modern Key West. What exists today would not have been without his vision and efforts. He envisioned Key West as a funky fun tourist attraction and made it so.
The Celebration begins at 12:30 at the Custom House.
Jean and Joe Thornton leave Key West today to spend some time at their home in Birmingham and to travel abroad. They will be missed.
We enjoyed dinner together last night at Berlin’s. Better company not to be found.
New Hampshire’s Joanne and David showed up. Good people. Their tenth visit to Key West. I never met them before and here have run into them 3 nights in a row.
First time for me at Berlin’s since the sale. I was upset smoking had been prohibited. I could only stay away so long. The food, staff, and Bria Ansara’s singing too good to avoid.
Walked over to the Chart Room afterwards. Packed. Chatted with John a while. Also with Rich. Rich is husband to Carrie. Carrie the La Trattoria bartender who saved my life a year ago. I was choking. She was over the bar and giving me the Heimlich in seconds.
Buffalo’s Tom and Fran Dixon have returned. Let the canons roar! Love them! Hopefully we will get together this evening to watch the Syracuse/Georgia Tech game together.
Fran has been away too long. She is concerned for me. Makes sure I am well fed. She cooks meatballs and pork and places them in Ball jars buried in sauce. Freezes the jars. Brings several to me each trip.
Makes for great meals. I am well taken care of.
The Syracuse/Georgia Tech game is at 6. Syracuse underdog by 6 points.
Love Angie Gilligan’s jewelry!
Angie is the proprietor of Crystals and Coconuts at 803 Whitehead. She features some of the finest hand made jewelry from both Key West and distant places.
Finally, some success with a cosmetic shop. Cosmetic store ERA Ageless at 617 Duval has closed. For good!
Congratulations to the citizens who took it upon themselves to picket and otherwise harass a business that was screwing around with credit card bills, etc. Elderly visitors the target.
Sam Kaufman is a local attorney. I have never met him. He has an excellent reputation. He is also an elected City Commissioner.
He has not impressed me with regard to 2 recent matters he has been discussing.
The first is Mt. Trashmore. He thought it time to consider the property for use as an affordable housing site. He was ill advised. The property not economically feasible for housing or any major development. Removal of the landfill itself estimated at $70-150 million.
Not the way to start.
My other concern is his raising of what he perceives might be an anti-Semitism situation. I believe him far off base on this issue.
His concern begins with the cosmetic shops. They are Israeli owned. He fears public resentment might be a reflection of anti-Semitism.
I have been in Key West some 30 years. Not one time have I ever seen, heard, or noticed the slightest anti-Semitism. We are One Happy Family.
I fear Kaufman’s raising this issue and not dropping it is going to open a non-existent wound. He is being a trouble maker in the pursuit of the issue. He is seeing shadows where none exist.
To place matters in perspective, the David Wolkowsky being honored today was of the Jewish faith. The event will be well attended and many sincere expressions of love shared.
“A city on a hill…..A shining city upon a hill.” Metaphors coming down to us from a portion of the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:14.
Other than Jesus first expressing them, the words were not publicly used till 1630. John Winthrop was a clergyman on the vessel Anabella. He spoke them while exhorting future Massachusetts Bay colonists to the task before them.
Two great Americans spoke the phrase in public addresses. John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Bush 41 also in a home made version. Kennedy and Reagan quoted as their source John Winthrop. Bush quoted no source.
We are no longer the shining city on the hill. In 2 years, Trump has destroyed our position in the world.
The wall thing makes the U.S. a laughing stock worldwide.
Besides leaving many federal employees without sufficient funds, Trump has come up with another idea where to get the funds to build a wall few want or deem required. Transfer funds from Army Corps of Engineering monies already authorized for natural disaster assistance. Moneys waiting use for Maria caused devastation in Puerto Rico, Michael Panhandle damage, recovery monies long overdue in the Keys because of Irma, and moneys to assist California because of the fires.
Yes, there are still moneys to be spent and/or owed in the Keys. Especially the southern portion. People still living in tents and shacks.
Trump makes me laugh. People still seriously hurting from natural disasters. He does not spend all the money authorized. He has been greedily hoarding it for a rainy day. The wall must be the rainy day.
Trump has an army of attorneys to defend him re the various investigations. It recently was announced that White House Counsel Cipollone had hired 17 more attorneys to assist in Trump’s defense. I do not know the total number.
Donald Trump, Jr., Jared Kushner, and Vice President Pence also are making use of White House Counsel in investigation matters.
Guess who is paying this bill? You got it! The taxpayers!
A 1993 opinion stated the President when sued in any matter is entitled to have the government pay legal expenses. Under the use and observation of the White House Counsel. The opinion applies to certain staff, also.
What a deal! Commit crime or wrongdoing and get someone else to pay your attorney fees.
This situation is similar to that which Congressmen had for years providing them a special benefit. A Congressperson who had sex charges levied against him was permitted the use of tax dollars to pay any settlement. Terrific! Sex for free! Sex without consequence!
The President, etc. also have outside counsel. I could not figure out if they are being paid personally by the client or from the Presidential slush fund described.
I end today with shrimp boats. Love that 1950’s tune…..Shrimp boats are a’coming, their sails are in sight……
Shrimp boats on the horizon beauties to behold. Never appreciated the song till I came to Key West and saw them first hand.
From the 1950’s to the 1970’s, the shrimp fishing business flourished. Some 300 boats. All harbored in Key West. Average catch per day 2,500 pounds.
Nothing is forever. Farm raised shrimp came into being. Key West’s shrimp industry close to being totally destroyed. The shrimp bats moved to Stock Island. Only a handful. The catch minimal.
Sad.
Enjoy your day!
