Fonó Budai Zeneház

50 million HUF of government funds will cover the preparations of the new Fonó’s renovation process. It is high time for the iconic Music Hall to continue its important work in a modernized environment.

The Budai Fonó Music Hall, founded in 1995, provides permanent opportunity for introduction for performers of Hungarian and international folk music and folk dance, and hosts occasionally the different trends of international jazz music as well. The main intention of the institution is to keep Hungarian folk music and experiments alive in the digital era, and to introduce these arts to as many people as possible.

Our designs show how an old powerhouse can be composed into a singular membrane-like structure. The facade shell is designed to recall the glass blocks found in the old building and also the classic masonry of industrial architecture.

Instead of just restoring and redesigning the brickwork of the old powerhouse, we developed a completely new approach: we composed a thin, flexible membrane that lets light and movement vibrate through while the skin-like walls keep all the noise inaudible for the outside world.

This combination is perfect for letting the building virtually come alive with creative energy though the intense creative work remains undisturbed.

The folk motifs appearing  on the facade are similarly composed from the small glass blocks as a musician would compose tunes from musical notes.

Songbirds, as symbols of the soul and mind, and other classic elements of Hungarian folk culture also evoke the patterns from traditional Hungarian lace-work and crocheted textiles, thus creating an image of a multifunctional folk centre at first glimpse.
