According to the World Resources Institute, the number of electric school buses operating or delivered in the United States more than doubled—from 598 in 2022 to 1,285 through June 2023—all driven to serve school children while providing cleaner air in 40 states.
Looking into the near future, the number of electric school buses that were already funded or on-order nearly tripled, and were spread across districts located in 49 states.
The emissions-free buses are found in 914 U.S. school districts and private fleet operators, according to the evidence-based nonprofit’s report published in September, 2023: State of Electric School Bus Adoption in the US.
Tumblr media
California leads all states, with over 2,000 committed electric buses across the sprawling territory. This is more than five times as many EV buses as the next leading state, Maryland, with 391 commitments.
New Jersey has the second largest increase with 107 new buses, while West Virginia has the third largest increase with 42 new commitments. The updated data shows electric school bus commitments are now more evenly distributed across all regions of the country.
The Top 5 School Districts by Number of Electric School Buses are:
Montgomery County Public Schools (Maryland)
Los Angeles Unified School District
New York City Public Schools
Twin Rivers Unified School District (California)
Troy Community Consolidated School District (Illinois)
“We estimate approximately 69,000 students across the country are currently served by electric school buses that are delivered or in operation,” said the report authors, Lydia Freehafer, Leah Lazer, and Brian Zepka.
Zero pollution from tailpipes while buses are idling or driving means the students, staff, and community will be exposed to significantly less harmful air particulates that contribute to asthma and lung disease. The environment also benefits from reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
The federal government’s Clean School Bus Program, administered by the Environmental Protection Agency, is one of the biggest funders of these vehicles, having awarded 2,339 electric school buses—with more on the way.

Gay Male Authors of Gay YA Novels
@owls-garden
I have not read all of these authors so I can’t vouch for quality, but here is a list of gay male authors* who have written at least one YA book with a gay male protagonist. I’m linking to their Amazon Author pages. I am sure there are more out there, but I haven’t been keeping up very well with the YA space. I have not read Heartstoppers, but I understand it is supposed to be a heartwarming coming-of-age love story? That is probably the dominant theme in the books these men write (although there are also coming-of-age with unrequited romance or no romance, dystopian thrillers, fantasy, and other genres in the mix.)
*to the best of my knowledge this is accurate
Adam Sass
Adam Silvera
Adib Khorram
Andrew Eliopulos (who does not have an author page even though Amazon has his book)
Arvin Ahmadi
Bill Konigsberg
Brent Hartinger
Brian D. Kennedy

Chris Tebbetts
David Levithan
David Valdes Greenwood

Title:  The Temperature of Me and You
Author: Brian Zepka
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2022
Genres: fiction, LGBT+, romance, contemporary, fantasy, science fiction
Blurb: 16-year-old Dylan Highmark thought his winter was going to be full of boring shifts at the Dairy Queen...until he finds himself in love with a boy who’s literally too hot to handle. Dylan has always wanted a boyfriend, but the suburbs surrounding Philadelphia do not have a lot in the way of options. Then in walks Jordan, a completely normal (and undeniably cute) boy who also happens to run at a cool 110 degrees Fahrenheit. When the boys start spending time together, Dylan begins feeling all kinds of ways...and when he spikes a fever for two weeks and is suddenly coughing flames, he thinks he might be suffering from something more than just a crush. Jordan forces Dylan to keep his symptoms a secret, but as the pressure mounts and Dylan becomes distant with his closest friends and family, he pushes Jordan for answers. Jordan’s revelations of why he’s like this, where he came from, and who’s after him leave Dylan realising how much first love is truly out of this world...and if Earth supports life that breathes oxygen, then love can only keep Jordan and Dylan together for so long.

!!!ARC REVIEW!!!
TITLE: THE TEMPERATURE OF ME AND YOU
AUTHOR: BRIAN ZEPKA
PUBLISHER: DISNEY PUBLISHING WORLDWIDE, HYPERION
PUBLICATION DATE: JANUARY 25TH, 2022
RATING: 4 / 5 STARS
I cannot adequately express in words how absolutely adorable this book is. Please don’t confuse adorable with precious. This book is a cute, sweet, YA sci-fi romance. It’s definitely not all hearts-in-eyes and rainbows everywhere, but overall the book is a sweet oeuvre to old friendships, new friendships, and first loves in an unconventional science fiction package.
The only thing keeping this book from reaching five stars is how far I think the author stretched my ability to suspend disbelief when it came to the main character’s relationship with his parents. It was an uneven family dynamic that never quite solidified enough in my mind to make sense for the story arc at large. Other than that, this book is a great read in this genre and I highly recommend it.
