(Think of this as their work spouse. They started around the same time and hit it off pretty quickly, and though Rory tends to keep to herself and mind her own business, she went full-tilt in befriending your character and they’ve become one of her best friends both in and out of work. They sign up for the same shift as much as possible and are willing to cover shifts for one another if necessary. Anything else can be plotted out after!)

Theatre Review: Well, Shut My Mouth

Presented by The Adelaide Repertory Theatre Reviewed 20 June 2019

Director Sue Wylie has lovinglybrought to life Brenton Whittles easy-going reflection on death in Well, Shut My Mouth. This new localplay, boasting a confident and cohesive cast, meditates on what it means toslip on to the other side through the eyes of three generations of a veryAustralian family.

True to its dark comedypromise, the story begins at the end the end of patriarch Clary Hobbs life.Alone in a hospital bed, mouth wide open, the audience is introduced to therecently departed figure of William Clarence Clarry Hobbs (Andrew Horwood).The looming panels of his shabby, off-coloured hospital room make for anunsettling opening scene. The illusion of serious, deathly deliberation isshattered almost immediately, however, with the entrance of his rowdy, stompingnurse (Helena Kordina). As she tends to the corpse and speaks with a boomingvoice about the poor bugger, it quickly becomes clear that this isnt goingto be an emotional, tear-jerking reflection on family bondage and existentialquestions.

The Hobbs family, who enterfrom off-stage, are loud-mouthed and represent the quintessentially dysfunctionalAustralian horde. Returning to Clarrys hospital bed they declare, We wereonly having a fag!, and begin reflecting good-naturedly on their dearlydeparted. Word play and inadvertent double entendres ensue. Lines are deliveredwith a good-humoured ease that keeps the dialogue feeling natural and proudlyocher.

In a particularly amusingscene, Clarrys wife, Mary (Julie Quick), becomes convinced that mobile phonemicro-waves can bring the dead to life, while hippie aromatherapist daughter,Betty Barks (Jenny Allen) sprinkles the body with a blend of patchouli,mushroom and garlic scents. Such shennaningans sustain the plot the whole waythrough, and are interspersed with monologue from Clarry himself, who speaksdirectly to the audience with matter-of-fact banter that takes full advantageof the repertoire of dead jokes available to the deceased. His dialogue anddelivery are just excellent Horwoods timing is perfect, and his lecheroushumour is just charming enough to get away with it.

There is an authenticity to thecharacters that keeps them from becoming Aussie charicatures. They shine withlove and, at times, real emotion. The cast is talented and very funny. But whilethere are moments of seriousness, the overall attitude of the play seems tosuggest that looking too seriously at the big questions in life is just toopainful. Most characters are repressed in some way, and seem sadly trapped inthat repression. Betty, who writes poetry that she hides from the world, admitsthat life has not turned out the way she planned. Her husband, Nick Barks(Malcom Walton), is an ex-cop who is hostile to sentimentality and eccentricself-expression especially when it comes to cross-dressing brother-in-lawCraig Hobbs (Dave Salter). Their son, Billy Barks (Sebastien Skubala) is silentand so weird in the words of sister Tambourine Barks (Carolina Fioravanti).

The jokes zip from one mouth toanother. But each time deeper issues come to the fore, they are typicallysidestepped. Maybe this is just what Australian families do. But given theplays emphasis on bringing realism to archetypes of Australian culture(lamingtons and cricket coolers, anyone?), I wish we could have seen somedeeper character growth. Maybe this play could have acted as a model for thoseAustralian families similarly trapped in gruff refusals to acknowledgeemotional depths.
