Rain.
The true Bratum never got a lot of rain, she thinks. The temperate climate and elevation is what drew the dwarves to develop their unusual, overhanging home. Even when the city did get rain, she never saw much of it. Just torrents of water that flowed down special drainage holes a half mile wide, or along the outside in massive sheets. Rain back home is an infastructure problem, she thinks. And nobody is maintaining it here.
The Rift is a cacophony of planar and geographic influences, and today, some peice of the Elemental Plane has decided to rally against the others and make it's rage everyone else's problem. The storm outside is wild, constantly changing direction and intensity. Even from her high vantage point she can only see patchwork areas of this BRatum. A trade district disappears under a torrent of hail, while a set of apartments remains miraculously untouched.
Here, where nothing but the echoes of a forgotten invasion, the results of a failed ambition, and her own terrible memories eat away at a carcass of an imitation that was never meant to be, she wonders if the effort her true home expends is really worth it, if, in the end, it's an ephemeral achievement that can be so easily made irrelevant.
She looks away from the window. Her musings are getting away from her, and she has work to do. But even still, her mind still drifts.
Will she ever truly see her home the same way again?
#arin hearthwarm#god this was self indulgent#its written like a middle schooler with a thesaurus and doesnt actually say anything and has horrifically clumsy symbolism#but i had fun so fuck you here it goes

God I'm watching a hollow knight randomizer and I'm just listening and I just
I have a lot of feelings about music in ttrpgs y'all
Grant makes liberal use of the HK soundtrack and I feel like it gives Bratum such a /fantasy/ feeling. I tend to lean towards the epic struggles, towards the old school Jeremy Soule and the dangerous. I want there to be a feeling of epic odds, of ever-present danger, and of sanctuaries where you can relax from the tense situations
But when we're lost in Grant's world, everything is so much more connected. It's almost like a painting, where the edges and details of the /game/ we're playing matter so much less than the story we're telling, and the focus is almost always on the characters. The settings aren't bright, vibrant places that I can picture as clear as a photograph, because they arent meant to be. They're backdrops where our imaginations can fill in the details, and the music provides so much inspiration for that. I can't picture every turn and corridor in Arin's Mansion, or the back alleys of Aah, or the twisted corridors of Kulanthar's tower, but I can feel the safety and comfort, the clandestine and cutthroat operations, and the horror and terror of an abomination and crime against nature far more acutely than I ever feel like I portray in my campaigns
My style has it's merits, for sure! I wouldn't do it if I couldn't. I love the established world of adventure in the Forgotten Realms, and I'm way too performative as a DM to not want to show off everything in the monster manual and tell y'all every detail I can wring out of the module and my head. But the reason I love writing long text chains about Bratum is because I Grant has created such an /atmosphere/ about Sixworld that t becomes so easy to immerse myself, and the background music that fills the heavy silence between Arin's outbursts, the tense strings that fuel every one of Kaven's hammer swings, the quiet music that punctuates ever Queltrin quillstroke, and the music so full of feeling that shows just how tragic Garret and Gugri's relationship is are just perfect
And then sometimes we get the StS shopkeepers music that PERFECTLY encapsulates the absurd situations we get into and I remember it's just a game with my friends, who I'm am eternally thankful for

Man, I bet Holiday/Christmas/Legally Distinct Winter Festival at Bratum would be such a lovely affair. Christmas Eve you can find Arin and Garret running around finishing up Christmas shopping. In the late evening everyone meets at the Church of Helm for some kind of community event, cuz it's a massive central location. There's a float contest that's actually a sculpture contest, cuz it's a dwarven holiday. During Christmas Day the others show up to Queltrin and Odexa's place to exchange proper gifts (Garret brings most of breakfast except for the bacon, which Kaven brings too much of)
And then in the upper part of the city there's a winter fair that probably resembles an early kind of American State Fair(tm) with all kinds of absurdly dangerous contraptions and rides to celebrate, cuz like the dragonborn don't really get the religious or culture weight of the definitely dwarven holiday, but an excuse to have a party is an excuse to have a party
Forgotten realms holiday in Rime is probably basically nonexistent
Christmas-au in Rime tho is the coziest, cutest thing. Bunny makes everyone matching ugly Christmas sweaters, Bright spends two whole days decorating the most elaborate Christmas tree the Dale has ever seen, and Flake is bah-humbug throughout the entire thing but secretly enjoys the pictures of his wonderful little crew he's tripped and fallen into
--
Maria obviously hosts and makes an elaborate Xmas feast
And does a yearly dramatic reading of "the night before christmas" in the middle of town
It's become a tradition for children (or really drunk people) to act out the story as she reads
--
Bunny follows after her and does a dramatic reading of the entire script for A Nightmare Before Christmas immediately afterwards, complete with Bright acting out Oogie Boogie badly
--
No one in town knows who they are but the storyteller is smiling and clapping so they quickly get into it
---
I'm love
--
--
It's also done at like, 3am so everyone is either gone to bed or too drunk to follow along
--
It's actually bunny remembering two stories that maria told badly and thinking they were one thing
--
I'm gonna go with the people who founded the city arrived in the first winter of the year and so there's a Christmas type holiday then.
And then three moons is kind of a new years thing that is weirdly enough a relic of the ancient cultures that somehow stuck around through everything
--
I was mostly also kinda doing a Bratum Christmas au but it's nice to have OFFICIAL LORE™
--
flake is my 'grew up in urban/suburban' insert so he knows All the typical traditions and is like what the fuck are y'all doing, where are the stockings
and Maria's like... on our feet? we wear socks??

Just errand thoughts about Party Dynamics:
Short version:
Sward is a close knit group of best (gay) friends, Bratum is a group of Ride or Die coworkers, and Rime is Peak Sibling Behavior
Sward very much has the "You could show me your absolute worst and I'd still love you, because I've shown you my absolutely worst and we still choose each other every single day". It's not found family because the group still feels like they could operate independently from one another, they could go on to tell their own independent stories separate from Sward, but within sword they are fucking airtight
Bratum very much feels like each person was (mostly) whole and complete and while we're completely on board with each other when it comes to the main task at hand, each of us still has their own "at home" drama they're sorting through independent of the group. People are comfortable keeping things private and even want to keep some things entirely separate from the group. Queltrin still has his home life with Odexa, Garret has a whole internal monologue he doesn't share all the time, Kaven is content to just do exactly what is needed to save the world, and Arin puts on her best Work Face every single day to the point that Garret is the only one who knows she's breaking down. There's even workplace romance, peak Office Drama
Rime is a dysfunctional group of people who were forced together by circumstance and if circumstances had been different there's a good chance none of them would have even interacted because their personalities, interests, goals, and development are so divorced from one another, and because of that there is so much friction and infighting, but if fucking ANYTHING threatens the group externally they are instantly a fortified wall of collective 'FUCK YOU' to whatever is threatening them. So, basically Peak Fucking Sibling Energy
Sward has infinite patience for one another and deeply protective instincts
Bratum has deep respect for one another and sense of strong shared purpose
Rime has zero patience for one another, zero respect, and infinite defensiveness

The whole theme of the Drolegarn crew was about "what forms does faith take"
For Leevik, it's a careful, earned devotion that was born of a lifetime of hardship from Drolegarn.
For Queltrin, it's newfound purpose and a sense of duty.
For Kaven, it's a quiet responsibility and a mantle to be worn without question.
For Venri, it was a simple belief and alignment of values that paid itself back a million times over, in both directions.

Okay I know I've sent this song before but I was listening to it again and y'all don't appreciate just how much it's such a perfect Gugri song so I wrote up a whole Genius.com song lyrics analysis for it that y'all are getting whether u like It or not: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HQDY7n-uh4o
[[[Verse 1]
Deep in the mist, I can feel something there
A touch of the soul like the wind in your hair
There's a light in the dark but it's just so far away, woah-oh]]
-OBVIOUSLY represents Gugri's attempt at contacting outsiders from his prison/tomb, gotta open the song with evocative imagery. There's a pause here, marking the passage of time
[[While we storm Heaven's gates
And we heal our mistakes
The fear could take us over
But we heal in the light
And we gather our might
To find our spirit's closure]]
-Gugri and the Kaorti's greatest guilt was leaving Kölln behind, and so they're emerging from the tomb to 'storm heaven's gate', ie going back to goddam space to prevent another catastrophe
[Chorus]
[[So we fall again
We come together
When the pieces fall apart
They last forever
With a prayer to fill our hearts
And to keep us brave, woah-oh]]
-gugri and the other Kaorti litterally became ageless ghosts when they 'fell apart' upon return to Kölln. The line about prayer is less about faith and more about how little of a chance at survival they had; all they had was the off chance that the tomb wouldnt be discovered too early, but would still be discoverable and that Gugri would actually recover from his injuries, which didn't... TECHNICALLY happen
[[Our eternity
A circle holding us between
The threads of life
This cursed reality
Has doomed us with new purpose
As spirits bound in service to the grave]]
-"the grave" here is their state of undeath/twisted existence that isn't true life; the Kaorti went from intelligent sapient creatures to little more than ghostly tools of Gugri, who was well on his way to mindlessness if it hadn't been for his newfound purpose; to stop the formless agent of destruction known as Zurguth.
[Verse 2]
[[Where some wander aimless and some quest for more
In traces of kingdoms, the ruins of before]]
-wander aimless is Kaorti, quest for more is Gugri. Ruins should be self explanatory, as they had to watch Bratum and other civilizations literally rebuild from the ashes of their past lives.
[[We consider the cost
And we're fighting to survive, woah-oh
While we cross through the rift
Our ethereal gift
Will leave us shells no longer
With the whispers in mind
Of the demon inside
We end our failures stronger]]
- Gugri grew away from his physical form to become the mystic smoke monster we know and love; what else could that be but an ethereal gift gained from crossing a rift? He gained more power (and more shackles) than the astronaut scientist could have ever had imagined from his and the Kaorti's failures.
[Chorus]
So we fall again
We come together
When the pieces fall apart
They last forever
With a prayer to fill our hearts
And to keep us brave, woah-oh
Our eternity
A circle holding us between
The threads of life
This cursed reality
Has doomed us with new purpose
As spirits bound in service to the grave
[Bridge]
[[Something has eclipsed this land
Covered by an unseen hand
Suddenly in death, we've found another kind of life]]
-See: Kulanthar and Gugri's transition to spooky fart cloud
[[Trodden under Kings and Queens
We inherit greater means
Power of the souls, now repurposed for our plight
Demons from an ancient time
Rise up from the filth and grime]]
-This is interesting, cuz I think at this point in the song this line is intended to be from a new character? Which I choose to interpret as this line is actually from Garrett, since the two are so inexorably linked. The next lines are sung in chorus, leading credence to this idea
[[Soon we face the storm, but in numbers we stand strong
Blessed with a kiss from the unholy light
To get up when we miss and after we've died
The battle will be ours, but the war is fighting on]]
This line is from both Garret and Gugri sung in chorus. In numbers, both the Kaorti and the Heroes of Bratum stang strong. The kiss from the unholy light could be both G/G's pact and things like shadow transference, giving life to the party. It's a dual-layered few lines and that's just so perfectly G/G and I love it, your honor.
[[[Alternative Chorus]
So we rise again
We stand together
Like a million lights aflame
They burn forever]]
-Again, another dual-meaning line; both the Kaorti are finally rising, and G/G are organizing the people of Kölln through the Bratum space program to burn forever against the darkness of Kulanthar
[[With a song to guide us home
And to keep us sane, woah-oh]]
-Both the siren song of Gugri kept the relatively mindless Kaorti coming home, and the eternal promise of having a peaceful life when all this is said and done keeps G/G comin back for more.
[[For eternity
We're searching onward
In the afterlife of Earth
Our bones in ashes]]
-a line exclusively for the Kaorti...
[[But we fight it all in wonder
And we'll face it with each other to the grave]]
-Because this is one explicitly for G/G! And God is it such a raw line, Jesus Christ.

So, world building question for the group. There's a stupid amount of "humans have always been humans" stories in our real world from Ea-Nasir's copper to the dolphin-LSD-sex experiment. What kinda really insignificant but really strange stories would the city of Bratum have of local stories of weird people or events?
Strange and silly holidays or traditions, local folk tales, places that have dumb stories attached to them?
Just for one: there's a strange drawing of a dragonborn chariacture that pops up all around the lower part of bratum, ala Killroy Wuz Here that used to be a symbol of dwarven resistance against dragonborn occupation. You can still find it over a lot of older buildings, but over the years it got co-opted to be a mascot of sorts for the city, and you can find images of this trogdor looking motherfucker graffitied on everything from the back of the steamwalkers to the undersides of bar tables
--
This is what Bratum kids do instead of the s thing
And no one knows where it came from
--
There's also a semi-offical holiday in Bratum well known among the trading caravans known as Carnival day, where Bratumites of both classes will erect multiple stages in the town squares all around the city and basically let the preforming caravans set up shop on a first-come-first serve basis, which means that for at least a five day before the festival there's a tent city outside the gates. Its an unofficial holiday because the origins of the holiday don't stretch that far, as it began with just a single stage erected by a bored set of construction workers in the lower part of the city, which was quickly replicated by a rival construction company on the top floor, which then escalated by two very competitive foremen
--
100s of years ago, no one can agree whether it was before or after the dragons showed up, there was an elven mage in the city named Lethnus who famously would enchant copper coins to look like gold, buy things, and then leave, as well as pickpocket small items. He was slowly banned from store by store until he left the city.
But now anytime there's a discrepancy in how much money should be somewhere/something gets misplaced, if the people involved don't want it to be an issue, they just say "Lethnus must have been here" and leave it at that.
---
One of the schools on the upper half has a high tower where the schoolchildren have a tradition of spitting off the tower and trying to hit someone before they graduate. People avoid the area in front of that building like the plague.
--
There's an incredibly prolific writer that's been published under a psydonym all around Bratum that's famous for not having any sort of distributor; the books just seem to show up among the various bookstores when the writing is done.
The truth is that the books are actually co-written by a minor cult among the people of bratum who worship a very confused fey who takes the form of a talking chest; they just record the nervous ramblings of this fey who keeps making up stories in order to keep the cult coming back cuz they can't figure out how to stop being a chest.
--
There's a local legend about a manhole somewhere in the city that isn't connected to the centralized sewer system, and instead takes you to a city made entirely of gold and jewels.
In actuality there was a manhole that used to be used to get to the undercity but it has since been filled in
Ooo there's a drinking game called "dragon's breath" played among all races because there's a myth that if you drink enough alcohol you can use your breath alone to make a candle turn into a flamethrower. You take turns taking drinks and blowing on a candle. Whoever ends up blowing it out chugs their drink.
Dragonborn as a rule don't use their actual breath weapons during the game. It's a matter of honor
God, Bratum really is just like, Chicago in the 20s. Growing pains from industrialization, class and wealth disparity creating vastly different experiences, and a bunch of people all forced together without near enough infastructure to make anyone comfortable
There's also a more traditional board/card game that's seen in the same vein as modern poker that has it's origin in a game played in the Jettson Peaks/Netsilik, but traveled via trade to the Greater Spritewood, and via trade from there to the lesser Spritewood, and from there to Bratum.
--
There's def an urban legend about a haunted steamwalker that you can never get off if you board it. Variations of the legend include it only appearing at 3 new moons, needing to be summoned by a weird ritual, or it appearing every night (the last one is usually used as a way to get kids to come home on time)
--
Plot twist, cuz this is DnD; there IS a haunted steam walker, possessed by the spirit of an engineer who was trampled underfoot a malfunctioning steam walker. This steam walker is known for having never been late, for never breaking down, and for being eeriely good when assigned to the hardest and most winding routes.
