I just finished Skinless (aka The Ballad of Skinless Pete). It was enthusiastically recommended to me, and there are many positive reviews and ratings.

For a film selling itself on gory body horror, I personally felt as though the blood was a tad too translucent in places, and there were some skin effects that were lacking (but, these can be forgiven, considering the modest $2,000 budget).

What could be improved is the reliance of red slime to sell the look of melting flesh. You can't just slap on a uniform coat of goo and call it a day. You need multiple layers, and texture. It has to look like it's actually connected.

A good example (below): Slimy, but the slime membrane looks connected, and varies in thickness/opacity.

Also, at no point should any flesh look like your actor or actress is covered in painted silly string.

And even as a bi woman, I could have done without the forced nudity. It's not even fun nudity. It's just uncomfortable, unnecessary, and incredibly unflattering to the actresses.

Now, that's not to say it's a bad film. On the contrary--it has genuinely inventive ideas, as well as gore effects (aside from those mentioned above) that looked pretty damn good, AND suitably creepy. The cinematography is pretty solid. The buildup of suspense was well-executed (though the music was overdone at times), and I especially liked the look of Pete while he has his own skinned face kind of dangling like a bad mask. Aside from those few painfully long scenes, the pacing was otherwise good (though I do wish there was a bit more character development). The acting isn't Oscar-worthy, but Brandon Salkil honestly does a terrific job as Pete. He's menacing and creepy, but sympathetic--and that's hard to pull off. I truly believe he has what it takes to play a proper horror icon.

Director Dustin Mills has carved a very specific niche for himself, and it's serving him well. This may be a film I'll need to revisit to better appreciate. I think I went in expecting something else entirely, and thus was prevented from fully appreciating it as it is. Plus, director Eric Stanze liked it, and I trust his judgment.

Watched 'Skinless' (2013) on TubiTV tonight. I thought the special FX were pretty stellar and the storyline wasn't bad. Overall the film had me feeling claustrophobic in the sense that there were so many plain white backgrounds and small spaces -- such as cramped rooms, basement and kitchen area etc. I chalk that up to mostly micro-budget and location restraints, however those are aspects of a lot of indie films that unfortunately get overlooked too often. Maybe in a strange way the empty white backgrounds and plastic wrap actually add to the dread of the film. I'd like to think it was done on purpose as a creative approach, but something feels missing so I wouldn't bank on it. 💀💀/💀💀💀💀💀 Synopsis: Oncologist Peter Peel discovers a possible cure for cancer in an exotic parasite.
