Is the Book launch Dead? If so… Now What?

So back in 2021, full lockdown, I released a nonfiction with Simon&Schuster (it’s here if you like history of science).

It was covid. But it’s more than covid; unless you are a REALLY big name, you aren’t getting a book tour. Instead, you might do some virtual events. I did. And I realized how incredibly boring most author events can be for the audience. A talking head. No interaction. That’s what used to happen at the book signing desk. For most authors and readers, those days are gone. But I *wanted* to interact… I missed book clubs and chatting around signing tables.

So I developed a twice monthly YouTube show that’s a bit like the muppet show meets Addams family meets book club. Claymation, custom book cocktails, skits, live music, and an actual book club chat with both the authors (!) and members (who actually read the books). I called it the PECULIAR BOOK CLUB.

It’s been slow growing, but we have 10k FB followers, 2500 free group members, and a committed set of about 75 people who religiously follow and support the show through paid membership. Oh. And we also have a podcast that turns all video content into audio AS WELL AS offering book launch shows and our ‘peculiar at the movies’ series.

About the Author

Christina Hammonds Reed holds an MFA from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. A native of the Los Angeles area, her work has previously appeared in the Santa Monica Review and One Teen Story. The Black Kids is her first novel.

My 5-Star Review

WELL. What can I say? I absolutely, positively loved this book! I am not an #ownvoices reviewer (I’m white), but I was just a year younger than the protagonist, Ashley, at the time this novel takes place. I remember vividly watching the savage beating of Rodney King by a gang of police, one of the first (but most certainly not the last) instances of police brutality captured on video and shown to a shocked nation. Well, a shocked white nation, at least -- I know it didn’t come as much of a shock to Black and brown folks across the country.

When we start the novel, the King beating has already happened, and now it’s time for the trial of four LAPD police officers. Although she is Black, Ashley hasn’t been paying much attention to the trial. She attends a fancy private school, her best friends are white, and there are only about a dozen other Black kids at her school -- most of whom, unlike her, are on scholarship. Her parents have reminded Ashley and her older sister, Jo, that they’ve worked hard to make it “so that Jo and I know nothing. We know nothing of crack or gangs or poverty. ...of welfare or Section 8 housing or food stamps or social workers. ...of schools with metal detectors and security but no books. ...of homegoings or small coffins. We know nothing of hunger. We are, according to my father, spoiled rotten little brats.” (ARC, p. 53) But then, the officers are found not guilty, and the city erupts. Over the course of 4 or 5 days of riots in parts of LA, looting and fires in multiple neighborhoods, and even the influx of military equipment and soldiers into her hometown, Ashley gains a deeper understanding of just how different she is from her white friends, what it’s like to become closer to Black classmates, and how her family’s history is written into her DNA.

While the setting in time is the 1992 riots, this story has overarching, universal themes -- themes that are certainly important to us even now, 28 years later. Within these pages you will find discussions on systemic racism; mental health and, in particular, how it plays out in minority communities; police brutality and aggression; inequality and class differences; letting go of toxic friends; finding out who “your people” are, the ones who get you and will be there for you through thick and thin; what it means to be a girl moving through the world and becoming a woman; what it means to specifically be a Black girl developing into a Black woman; and, perhaps above all, finding your voice and learning how to use it. There are so many great words in these pages that I want to share, but I’ll leave it at this quote from Jo: “We have to walk around being perfect all the time just to be seen as human. Don’t you ever get tired of being a symbol? Don’t you ever just want to be human?” (ARC, p. 157)

Before I close, let me also say a word about how incredibly gorgeous this cover is, and how perfectly it captures all of the feelings and themes evoked in the story. If the ARC is this gorgeous, I can’t even imagine how stunning the finished copy will be. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I hope you will snatch it up as soon as you can get your hands on it. Seriously, you need The Black Kids on your shelves. Read it, and let me know what you think.

End Period Poverty: Seventh Generation Partners With PERIOD on #NationalPeriodDay

(GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Seventh Generation, a leading household and personal care products company and a pioneer in the eco-friendly products space, is partnering with PERIOD, a non-profit working to end period poverty and period stigma, on the first-ever National Period Day, Saturday, October 19. Youth activists nationwide will rally across all 50 states to raise awareness for the issue of period poverty, demanding clean and healthy period products to be freely accessible in schools, shelters, and prisons, and to call for eliminating the tampon tax.

To reinforce its mission to champion period equity, Seventh Generation has also announced a new charitable co-venture to support organizations, like PERIOD, working toward period equity. Across the brand’s full portfolio of period care products, including pads and tampons, 43 cents per package - representative of the average cost of the tampon tax in the United States - will be donated to organizations doing impactful work to reverse period inequity.¹

Beyond the tampon tax, there is a need for more programs to supply tampons and pads for populations that don’t have access to period care products. Seventh Generation believes all who menstruate should have access to green and clean period care options, which is why the brand’s tampons are made of 100 percent organic cotton and free of unnecessary fragrances and deodorants.

To bring further attention to the issue of period poverty, Seventh Generation and PERIOD released a PSA, SEE RED, which highlights the insight that if faces were bleeding, someone would do something to help. When blood is hidden, it’s much easier to ignore. Not having tampons and pads means not being able to go to school or work.

K. Imani’s 2017 Favorites

I'm so glad that publishing houses are producing more and more diverse books because each year the choices for my end of the year list gets harder to narrow down, and these are the books that I was just able to read because I know there are books that I missed that I'm sure I'd love (for example, I finally read Aristotle & Dante this year and I loved it so much!). All of these books below really moved me in some way, whether it made me ponder the future, make me snap my fingers with its "wokeness", or made me stand up and cheer, therefore they make my best of 2017 list. Not that she has to be nice, but there is a specific meanness to Omarosa. It's a trait she shrewdly exploited by becoming a person whose first name alone identifies her to the masses-a level of fame largely crafted by her leaning into the role of television villain on The Apprentice. And, of course, she has an obvious opportunistic streak. She continues to claim that her motivation for taking a job in Trump's White House was to ensure the Black community had a “seat at the table.” But given that much of the policies and rhetoric from the Trump administration recall a burning cross, it's difficult for any reasonable person-particularly if they are Black-to find her acting in any fashion beyond self-interest.

Speaking with theGrio, Omarosa was asked if she felt that she'd achieved the goals she set forth on behalf of the Black community. “In some ways, I came up short,” she answered. This response is akin to someone asking me if my attempt at the Keto diet was still going strong, and I answer them with a picture of me swimming inside a pool of Popeyes biscuits. But in addition to sinisterism, Omarosa's gifts also include manipulating the media and always finding a way to flip the narrative in her favor.

Such skill set is often attributed to her former co-star and mentor, President Trump-though as we have seen in the tweets, Sweet Potato Saddam is not at all happy with his former protégé.

You know, I typically don't like to speak for Black folks as if I am the Prime Minister of Black people because it's very Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, back when the media treated them like they were the Brandy and Monica or Ja Rule and Ashanti of civil rights. But I am confident when I say that Black people by and large do not rock with Omarosa. She is that cousin who still might get invited to our functions, but will likely be told the wrong time-say when all of the food and most of the liquor is gone. Aligning herself with Trump is a betrayal. The man is a racist and no one believes her when she acts as if she magically discovered this because she allegedly heard him say “n--r.” She knew he was a racist beforehand; we all did.

That being said, I found myself infuriated by Trump referring to Omarosa Manigault Newman as a “dog.”

When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn't work out. Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!

True enough, Trump has a history of referring to rivals as “dogs,” which is rooted in his noted disdain of Scooby and Scrappy. But racism and sexism emanates from the tweet. What else can you get from, “When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break?”

Trump's views of Black people and women are clear, and when you combine those identities, Trump often employs his harshest insults. Just ask Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party. She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!

You don't have to like Omarosa to believe she does not deserve to be described as a “dog” or “lowlife.”

This indecent, ignorant, bigoted man continues to debase the office of the presidency with his rhetoric and with one new low after another. Omarosa is just the latest target, but there is always a noticeable level of additional callousness leveraged at women-especially Black women.

Although I hate the notion of a Black woman being referred to as a dog by the President of the United States, I do wonder where Omarosa's head is. Has she learned anything? Like, say, not leaning her Black self to the political ambitions of a racist? Based on her interviews, I doubt it. Give her all the kudos for garnering as much media attention as possible for her book by answering interview questions like the star of the three-part reunion for The Real Housewives of White Supremacy-but was any of this worth it?

Omarosa once claimed that Trump haters would have to “bow down” to him, and in the end, he dismisses her as a “dog.” Perhaps she thinks the lesson here is to beat folks at their own game, but from this viewpoint, all she did was play herself. Omarosa is nobody's “dog,” but she was foolish to ever attach herself to someone who had the potential to say such a thing.

A Great British Drink

The Whisky Mac, short for Whisky MacDonald, is a classic cocktail made with Scotch whisky and green ginger wine. Half 'n' half is customary, but ratios of 3 to 2 or slightly higher have become the modern standard.*

Whisky Mac Drink Recipe:

1 ½ oz blended Scotch whisky

1 oz green ginger wine

Add both ingredients to a glass and stir together without ice. This drink is meant to be a warmer. In fact, depending on the weather, some add a wee bit of boiling water much like a Hot Toddy does.

A Golfer's Favourite

Certainly in chilly weather Scotland anyway, where the Whisky Mac is a staple at golf clubs throughout the country, famous and otherwise. For example, after professional golfers were first allowed use of the clubhouse in 1946,

Participants in the 1950 British Amateur were given free run of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and were warmed with sincere hospitality and an occasional Whisky Mac-Donald (whisky and ginger wine).†

This makes the Whisky Mac perfect as a British Open golf themed drink.

Charles Blair MacDonald

Armed with this knowledge, you might be inclined to think that the Whiskey Mac's namesake was World Golf Hall of Fame member Charles Blair MacDonald. After all, he was born in 1855 to a Scottish father, went to St. Andrews University, was tutored by Old Tom Morris and competed against Young Tom Morris back in the day.‡

His accomplishments include helping to found the United States Golf Association (USGA), winning the first U.S. Amateur Championship and building the first 18 hole golf course in the United States. Being considered the father of American golf course architecture certainly sounds deserving of a signature drink and (as you'll find out later in this article) that may well be the case. However, another source claims otherwise. So...

Who Is The Whisky Mac Named After?

According to Crabbie's, one of the oldest producers of green ginger wine in Scotland, the Whisky Mac was named after then Brigadier-General Hector MacDonald during the British Raj of the Indian subcontinent (where ‘rāj’ means ‘rule’ in Hindustani).1 Colonel MacDonald was seconded to command the Sirhind district in the Punjab Province in October 1899, which happened to be one of the sources of the sixth cholera pandemic (1899–1923) which spread to Europe via Afghanistan, Persia and southern Russia as well.2

Early treatments for cholera included laudanum and calomel as well as camphor and ginger with the latter two both having had extended use as Bengallee medicines and were very popular as local remedies.3 Legend has it that the General mixed green ginger wine with whisky as a means to help ease symptoms of those suffering from the cholera disease where he was stationed.

MacDonald's Drink Ingredient Inspiration?

Along with its storied medicinal properties, ginger also had a long history as a flavoring in alcoholic drinks. There were countless recipes available at the time for rum & ginger, ginger beer, ginger brandy, ginger gin and of course ginger wine, which dates back to at least 1740 London and the Finsbury Distillery Company's brand called Stone's ginger wine named after grocer Joseph Stone who was an important customer.4

By comparison, ginger and whisky combinations were few and far between. One early example is Robert Burns favourite recipe for a hunting flask (so pre 1796) which included whisky, lemon rinds, bruised ginger, ripe white currants and powdered loaf sugar.5 However, true liquid inspiration for what would become the Whisky MacDonald may have come in 1882 from humor magazine Puck when reader Freddy W. wanted to know a cure for sour apple cholera.6

Take a little Jamaica ginger7 and about half a hand of rye whiskey. Mix the two pretty well and pour them down. Five minutes later take a little Jamaica ginger and about half a hand of rye whiskey. Then you will feel better; but, if you think you are not thoroughly cured, take a little Jamaica ginger and about half a hand - well, that is the way to cure sour apple cholera.

Additional cocktails previously recommended in connection with other cholera treatments at the time included Brandy Mint Juleps, Hot Toddys and Fernet-Branca.8,9

First Published

Its popularity in England prompted inclusion in an American cookbook in 1900 which appears to be its print debut.10 The MacDonald Cocktail which later became the Whisky MacDonald a.k.a Whisky Mac was originally listed simply as being made with one-half ginger wine and one-half Scotch whisky. No specific type of wine or whisky (i.e green or blended for example) was actually specified.

It was noted that although ginger wine was little used in the U.S. at the time, it was readily available at export houses and that Crabbie's was a popular brand on the other side of the pond.

The MacDonald / Whisky Mac Recipe Iterations

Looks like there may have been a long lapse in print visibility, but this style of The MacDonald cocktail (see below for others) reëmerges, becoming the Whisky Mac to differentiate itself as brandy and rum versions are also introduced along the way. Rye whiskey replaces Scotch whisky in a couple drink formulas as well. Here's the original MacDonald recipe's early historical milestones and timeline.

1920s - Fifty-fifty Stone's Ginger Wine and Whisky (voted the drink of drinks by thousands of golfers)11

1930 - ½ Sandy MacDonald whiskey + ½ ginger wine12

1933 - 1 part Scotch malt whisky and 1 part ginger wine.13

1934 - ½ ginger wine + ½ rye whiskey14

1934 - ½ jigger whisky or brandy + ½ jigger ginger wine15

1948 - 1 measure rum + 1 measure ginger cordial16

So, What's The Rub?

Although they cited cold weather was coming,10 - suggesting the book was released later in 1900, even a December print date with a last minute edit only allows just over a year to go from being created in India, to becoming popular in England, to having the word spread to America, etc.2 THAT'S MORE THAN HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD! Way back when?

Even though there was limited telegraph and telephone service available at the time, this was BEFORE the internet, television and even radio. While it's certainly possible, when you consider all those factors, that time frame seems too short to be realistic.

Alternate theory: Sandy MacDonald was an old Scotch whisky blend from 1840 Edinburgh and Stone's reported an increase in ginger wine sales after the 1832 cholera outbreak.17 Could these two have paired up much earlier than their 1930 listing, say during the third, fourth or fifth pandemic, w/ Sandy Mac being the true namesake and the combo predating 1899?18,19

You'll have to decide. However, as always, when and if further research suggests otherwise, we'll update our findings. Cheers!
