But does it stay true to branding as well? It does become an interesting thoughtâŠ
The Yin (or the black part) signifies the darker part of your branding. It may be a failed campaign, an honest mistake, bad decisions or a catastrophic ROI. These are situations which every business goes through at some point of time. Barring a few exceptionally lucky ones, almost every brand has had to face immense odds to reach to the position they are in today. Financial doldrums, competitive disadvantages and internal issues are parts and parcel of branding strategies. But then what does the white circle stands for, you may ask! Well, glad you askedâŠ
Hereâs what you can take from your Yin Branding:

Brand Analysis
Carried out some further research into the brand using the marketing tool of looking at the 4 Câs and 7 Pâs. This helped me identify each individual aspect of the brand broken down as to what strategies are already in place for building the brand up and where there is room for improvement.Â
4 Câs of Marketing
Creating - Original artwork using existing images of famous faces or symbols representing the punk era. Prefab77 uses a range of different materials to create this artwork including wood, metal, wheat paste, spray paints and stencils. This variety of products allows the artist to layer up his work in a collage style.
Culture - The culture this artwork is influenced from is modern pop culture mixed in with punk culture. The attitude of anti-establishment and seizing justice for the wrongdoing of society.
Curating - Pieces often selected for Prefab77 exhibitions are the recognisable female figures with graphic head dresses as well as the collage pieces with intricate detailing. The brand are branching out into using wood materials to create their âtotemâ pieces which are a mixture of the two previously mentioned designs featuring both female figures with the collaged effect of newspaper cuttings and stickers. When presenting these artworks on the wall, curators have to ensure enough space is left between each piece as they are visual statements that can look overpowering and lead to detail being missed if placed too close together.
Connecting - Instagram (15.1k followers, 100-500 likes average), Facebook (over 4000 likes/follows significantly less engagement), Flickr (635 followers hardly any engagement), Linked In(225 followers) - engagement with his social media following is lacking Influencer Marketing Global Street Art - web platform showcasing artists Art Republic - Prefab77 featured as artist of the week - online platform
7 Pâs of Marketing
Product - Pieces of work taking influence from punk era and graffiti style street art. Commonly used techniques include screen printing and collages which are hand finished. Sold online and in galleries however there is not a physical store exclusively selling Prefab77 artwork
Place - Based in Newcastle but internationally recognised brand through exhibiting at global shows. Artwork is shown in global galleries such as America and France however could potentially reach an even larger audience through gaining a bigger brand presence online and using connections from exhibitions
Price - ÂŁ100-900 (originals). Can be considered to be a reasonable price as street art is becoming more respectable among the art community and earning a status of high prices. Prefab77 have adjustment room to increase their prices if wanted especially as some pieces are being resold for thousands of dollars showing their is a market for collectors who are willing to pay more
Promotion - Uses numerous online art platforms that promote and host artist pages to showcase their work to the art lover community. Could collaborate with some figureheads within the urban community to use as brand ambassadors which would promote his artwork. Practise using social media and getting part of the digital audience will also help his brand as the younger generation of his target audience could help promote online.
People - Peter Manning (founder), started his career as a printmaker and designer for Her Majesty in the British Army. Moved onto organising exhibitions at Elecktrick Sheep Gallery for street artists such as Banksy. His former projects have included creating work commissioned by Converse, Nike and Keds. Whilst analysing the people of this brand we can also look into the subjects in the artwork. The overall theme is anti-establishment however the artwork features people in power in a alternate view. He uses instantly recognisable icons who have a very serious reputation (e.g. The Queen, Churchill) and plays with the idea of their status by using stencils to make them pose looking cheeky and playful
Process - Begins by photographing his subjects then repeating the images through screen printing. Using multiple crafts such as acrylic pain, spray paint, ink and wheat paste he creates these masterpieces often in portraiture style combined with collaging techniques. His inspiration is taken from the idea of street art being the view of establishment from the eyes of the public. Often using these strong figures and making a mockery of them. The thought process within street art relies heavily on inspiration and most of the time you can see features of ones artists work taking influence from anotherâs. It is a community of sharing ideas and then using personal artistic licence to create that idea through their own perspective.
Physical Evidence - Artwork within exhibitions and on the streets in city Newcastle centre however no retail space. There are few pieces of Prefab77 to view within the streets, creating some bigger pieces more central to the town could be an effective way to promote the brand and get a larger audience seeing the artwork.
