Brainquility 2020 Blew All Expectations Out of The Water!
Brainquility Music Festival held its third annual funk-filled weekend from February 6th-8th and this year’s event blew all expectations out of the water! Though the weekend kicked off with a rocky start due to the unpredictable force of mother nature, curators at Ontap Music were not letting a little rain get in the way of their funk parade. Curators expanded the festival to include some more vendors on site and a third full day of music, but mother nature had other plans regarding our third full day. Despite a torrential downpour, attendees were still able to enjoy the fully immersive experience provided by Brainquility throughout the rest of the weekend.
Thursday kicked off at 3:30 PM with Night Crawler on the Live Stage, but it wasn’t long before all the power in the park went out. The stage crews and curators worked in overdrive trying everything they could to get the power back on. The power finally came back - about an hour or so before the torrential downpour was scheduled to hit us. As the rain hammered down on us, curators worked swiftly to open us the Music Hall at Suwannee to welcome anyone who wished to brave the rain and make a run for it. Sidetrakd and Defunk took the stage inside the Music Hall to keep the party groovin’ through the rain. Around 11 or so, the wrath of the rain began to ease up and soon we were back to clear skies for the weekend. To celebrate the passing of the torrential downpour, the Floozies took the Live Stage a little later than expected and brought the face melting funk that all the attendees had been craving all day. Though the rain threw everyone for a loop and some artists had to cancel their appearances for the weekend, curators at Brainquility Music Festival worked in overdrive to reschedule the rest of the weekend and work some of the canceled Thursday artists into the schedule for Friday and Saturday. After Brainquility 2020, it is clear that a little rain will now stop the funk parade at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park.
Friday morning came with an abundance of sunshine and good vibes. With the sun peaking from behind the trees, the birds were chirping and the Spanish Moss was dancing in the gentle breeze. Some attendees made their way to yoga workshops while others went face-first into a hashbrown bowl and space juice by the Grilled Cheese Incident. Hi. We are “the others”. There’s nothing like starting your day off with a cup of Space Juice from the Grilled Cheese Incident. For more information on these delicious eats available at Brainquility 2020 - stay tuned to our Bars N’ Bites page for the full, in-depth review! The day officially kicked off with Custard Pie on the Live Stage, followed up shortly by Dunstan Wallace & Friends on the Sound Stage. Brainquility curators do a quite exceptional job at having the two stages have different genres available for attendees. So if a funky, live band jam on the Live Stage isn’t your thing then you can boogie over to the Sound Stage for some deep house, EDM, or techno vibes. As the day danced on, Sidetrakd took the Sound Stage around 5 PM and shortly after the Lazy Syrup Orchestra brought the funk to the Live Stage. Attendees began packing into the Live Stage area and finding those primo spots to hang their hammocks and relax as they prepared themselves for Marvel Years to take the stage next. Marvel Years has a very unique, electro-funk meets rock n’ roll vibe that gets you up and dancing at the strike of the first chord. Just as he’s cutting into some deep and funky grooves on the decks, he breaks out his guitar to add that perfect amount of melody to the mix. Since Maddy O’Neal was unable to perform on Thursday, due to the unfortunate circumstances with the weather, Marvel Years threw “Viral Love”, featuring Maddy O’Neal, into his set to show her some mad love. The rest of the night was a full send from Russ Liquid at 9:30 to Manic Focus at midnight. Russ Liquid’s mix of deep bass with his funky trumpet riffs is a unique, groovy sound that he has truly made all his own. Closing out the night with Manic Focus was definitely one of the more high-energy performances of the weekend. Manic Focus only had a live drummer on stage with him and he still brings the heat like most full live band productions. This funk filled night with Marvel Years, Russ Liquid, and Manic Focus was the picture perfect build up to Saturday as these artists would be going b2b Saturday night under the name Brainchildren. After Manic Focus closed out the night, there was a full night of secret sets and campground wandering to be had by all who could withstand the chilly air.
Saturday morning came and there was a somber sense of last day vibes sprawling throughout the park. Some attendees could be seen packing up their campsites getting ready to peel out directly after the final band and others could be seen splayed out in their hammocks wishing there was another day of dancing to be had. The day officially kicked off at 2:00 PM with Boots N’ Catz on the Sound Stage and Row Jomah on the Live Stage shortly after. The highlight performances from Saturday were definitely MZG, Kill Paris, Brainchildren, Sunsquabi, and Justin Martin. MZG brought the house down with their deep, dubstep vibes and over the top energy. Watching these two play off each other during the performance is a spectacle all its own. Following their set up with Kill Paris was a perfect decision from the curators of the event. The deep funky dubstep vibes continued as Kill Paris remixed “Gonna Make Me Loose My Mind” by DMX and had every person as the Live Stage showing off their best dance moves. After gettin’ down and dirty to some deep, heavy dubstep vibes, attendees slowed it down just a notch with the performance from Brainchildren. The collaboration between Marvel Years, Russ Liquid, and Manic Focus had some smoother, funkier vibes oozing out of the PK sound system at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park amphitheater. This once in a life time collaboration between these three artists had all the attendees packing out the Live Stage to get a piece of this funky action. After this special collaboration between the Brainchildren, the night closed out with some Dirtybird action on the Sound Stage from Justin Martin and some electro-funk vibes from Sunsquabi on the Live Stage. Brainquility boasted a perfectly balanced line up where deep, heavy bass and electronic dance music meets at a cross road with some super groovy, rhythm-driven funk.
Brainquility Music Festival offers a fully immersive and interactive experience for all attendees to enjoy. From live painting their own creations to blowing glass on site, curators offer a wide variety of activities suitable for any age. Scattered throughout the park, attendees can find canvases by Dan Collins that depict various psychedelic patterns and pictures. These canvases are left with these simple, black-outlined psychedelic patterns so that attendees can stop and put their two cents in with some color! All throughout the weekend, attendees are invited to grab a marker and help bring these masterpieces to life. Brainquility also offers one of the few fully interactive merch experiences in the festival scene. Curators bring a full screen printing service on site that allows attendees to mix and match pre-set patterns and designs to craft their very own, unique t-shirt for the weekend. With a handful of designs to pick from and a variety of shirts, attendees have the opportunity to walk away with a one of a kind piece of Brainquility merch! If t-shirts aren’t your thing but you get down on some jewelry, Brainquility also offered a limited edition hat pin and the opportunity to blow your own glass pendant on site. Not many festival curators go the extra mile to make sure their attendees get hands on and have a creative spirit awakened within them. Brainquility is definitely setting the scene to be one of the top festivals at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park.
Brainquility Music Festival definitely went off with a bang this year! Though attendees were caught in a rainstorm on Thursday, a little rain won’t keep the brainiacs at bay. If anything, the extra time to take a nap on Thursday just fueled the brainiacs and sent their feet into dancing overdrive for the rest of the weekend. Brainquility Music Festival has grown exponentially since is first year in Safety Harbor, Florida. Curators at Ontap Music are happy to call Spirit of Suwannee Music Park their new home as it allows for more expansions to the festival layout and landscape. Though the third day succumbed to the wrath of mother nature in 2020, attendees are on the edge of their seats for the 2021 announcement. We hope to fully immerse ourselves in a full, three day Brainquility experience next year that is filled with more creativity, more funk, more handcrafted food..and did we say more funk? It is clear that curators at Brainquility Music Festival are just getting started and we are looking forward to seeing the festival grow over the next few years. Stay tuned to Brainquility’s Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for more information regarding the 2021 return of the festival. Also, keep it locked here as we will update as soon as information unfolds. As always, stay hydrated, if you see something then say something, and we hope to see you at a festival this spring!

Welcome back to Clayfest Tour 19 and the quick turnaround to the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park with the inaugural Suwannee Rising Music Festival. Rise up! Spring is the time to be in North Florida and we’ll be here for all of them from Brainquility to Spring Reunion, Suwannee Rising to Tipper. This heralds back to an earlier spring and the Bedouin trade outpost that smelled vaguely of burnt pig bone. You can still smell it, if you try. Festival season begins right here while the rest of country still shakes off their winter cobwebs. Suwannee Rising bought out many of the Bear Creek and Wanee faithful and their distinct vibes could be felt as early as the pre-pre-party. Both of those festivals had reputations for mad love, insane ragery and professional camping prowess. This line-up covered several different genres of fantastic music with greats like Moe and Oteil Burbridge joining with Lettuce, Dumpstafunk and many more to offer up a weekend of music and fun with great friends, old and new. Welcome to the inaugural Suwannee Rising: Call of the Buttscratchers.
Come home to Hobo Kamp.
Lucienda Rosalita and Baitbucket headed south out of Roanoke on their way back to the Live Oak forest. Bluegrass spilled out of the Pioneer as they cruised along the rolling hills of southern Virginia. They were in Clay’s van, which Darth Khaleesi had recently gifted them. It replaced the Adventure Wagon which, only days earlier had been left for scrap on the side of I-75 at Paine’s Prairie, just south of Gainesville. On his way to go tuna fishing in Louisiana, Corporal Turner reported that she was no longer sitting on the side of the interstate. Now they cruised along the same road, in the same vehicle that had carried the original Shawsvegas Mafia to this park that he loved so many times. Now his ashes sat on the dashboard right next to the Alabama cap. You cannot make this stuff up.
Darth Walthall and Moonshine Gary, Suwannee Rising 2019
The week in Roanoke had been full of tears, moonshine and music. From dancing cowgirls to vomit on the Appalachian Trail, it had been a blur of smoky bars and acoustic guitars. Not Baitbucket’s Larrivee of course. The rumors that it was waterproof proved to be unfounded after it spent the night in the pouring rain of Live Oak. He’s why we can’t have nice Canadian guitars. In Virginia, the blueberry moonshine and Knob Creek flowed like a river and the music began each day even before the sleep boogers had been cleared.
Virginia is for thugs.
They arrived at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park Tuesday afternoon and pulled down the Hippy Trail toward the Hobo Kamp. Sarah and Sarah had been reserving the space since Suwannee Spring Reunion and the line of hanging clothes completed the Hobo Kamp theme. Sarah had dug a trench to hide the contraband electricity, which would be used to power the stolen Christmas lights and the towering death clown. Baitbucket still wasn’t sure if we was going to buy a ticket, work the festival or simply not care. He was widely regarded as a kamp body and spent most of his time around the fire contributing to its gibberish. It wasn’t until Wednesday even that the call came through inviting them to cover the festival for the website. Perfect timing. The “small-dog” metaphor could now be passed over for one with a bigger, more sparkly footprint. After all, this is our park and last checked, when we’re here, we’re supposed to go pretty big. Once again, they were legit and would have the VIP passes needed to efficiently maneuver the folds of the festival. Game on.
For this festival, the entire Suwannee Rising Kamp Happiness Hobo Kamp was run completely by girl power. There was such a wealth of strong, beautiful women that the entire facility appeared virtually overrun. With surprise visits by Kamp Happiness founders, Spacebug and Darth Walthall, newcomers like Holly, Margo, Roxanne and Jessica added much-needed spice and networking foundations were put in place with Jodie and the thugish brutes known as the Buttscratchers.
How is one supposed to properly network with new neighbors? Welcome to your field. Welcome to our fire. The best way to introduce yourself to neighboring campers is with a gift. Sparkly rice crispy treats or ham and egg sandwiches are just a couple of ideas, but gifts of any kind are a fine way to get the wheels greased between neighbors. Otherwise, encroachment issues may arise and in a forest of 800 acres, that’s a bad look. Make sure safeguards are in place so as to avoid unfortunate lapses in communication. It’s fun when two small fires becomes one big one.
Run, don’t walk. It’s the attack of the Buttscratchers. This Wanee procession has been raging just south of the lake for years. Listen for their haunting call as you wander by the sweet spot, next to the sound board, on your way to the rail. Their bar serves everything on tortillas and it’s always the last stop of the night. Jodie could be found chumming the road with glow sticks and then setting up her gear for some wook fishing. Serious anglers, the slot for wooks (phisha wookinus) in April throughout Suwannee County is five to seven feet. Aggregate bag limit is three per person. Be sure to harvest responsibly and help protect our remaining wook rookeries.
A Day in the Life of a Buttscratcher
8:12 am: The light fog hung over the tents throughout the forest as only the earliest birds began to stir. Special Ed was already up brewing the coffee and preparing for the first acoustic jam of the day; He’d begun to smell like a Polaroid plant and it was agreed he should take a page out of Waffle’s book and consider an old fashioned trucker’s shower.
10:10 am: As the second wave of late-night revelers began to roll out, Margo ran down her battery for the second time during the breakfast jam. It’s a rule, Floozies fans should just camp together. Is it too early to get greasy and low-down? I think not grasshopper. Visit her spot, Cool Beans Coffee next time you’re in Marietta, Georgia.
Suwannee Rising 2019: photo by Sarah Fortier
12:12 pm The Kamp Happiness courtesy vehicles remained in operation for most of the festival. Sarah’s golf cart served to transport team members as well as locate groundscores and firewood. The second courtesy bike disappeared sometime during the festival. Last seen, it was with Chandler, who had been already sucking contraband electricity from Sarah’s contraband electricity. Who steals from the bike thieves and where are all the courtesy vehicles ending up? Sounds like some kind of mystery to be sure.
Thank you Sarah Fortier for this gallery of serious whimsy. Look for her work when nailtravels heads to Floyd, Virginia for the culmination of Clayfest Tour 19. The world is yours. Also thanks for helping to reserve the Hobo Kamp for the rest of the flotilla.

5:34 pm: Baitbucket had removed his governor and the moonshine began puddling in the bottom of his feet. It was far too late to change anything. The good work had been done and there was only time to sit back and wait for the white lightning to fill the cavities of his head hole and make a mess of things. By the time he threw himself from the moving golf cart, his vision had begun to get all “wiggly”. His head slammed into a tree stump but his face had been spared by his new groundscored sunglasses. The last time anyone saw him his face was covered in drool and his shirt was getting ripped off in strips of torn, colored cloth. As he offered an umbrella apology to everyone the next day, he chalked up the entire nasty incident to the effects of sustained and intense grieving.
This next gallery is from our sister and professional ukulele picker Arielle D’Ornellas. For a musician she’s one heliconia of a photographer. These shots will explain why she stands head and shoulders above the rest. Visit her social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram and be sure to catch her band as they play at Orange Blossom Jamboree later this month.

Thanks to Suwannee Rising for including our team in the inaugural fun. The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is the perfect place to unwind with music and friends. We look forward to many more years working together in the park to make it a special venue for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to Roxanne Epstein for helping with photography and mimosas.
Thank you Shane Turner for having a mind to catch a soapfish with a net. You will be missed.
Keep up with nailtravels as we slug through the summer of lost rednecks and Clayfest 19. Get ready for Tipper&Friends, Suwannee River Jam and Backwoods Music Festival in Ozark, Arkansas. Don’t ever look back.
The Inaugural Suwannee Rising: Call of the Buttscratchers Welcome back to Clayfest Tour 19 and the quick turnaround to the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park with the inaugural Suwannee Rising Music Festival.

Top 5 Food Vendors at Brainquility 2020
Brainquility Music Festival 2020 saw some expansions to the landscape and layout of the festival as curators are beginning to settle into Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. After learning the lay of the land in 2019, curators made some changes to the layout of the vendors to include a few new vendors this year. Brainquility puts an emphasis on providing the attendees with a fully immersive experience with no scheduling conflicts, which allows them to actually take a moment to truly enjoy some of the handcrafted dishes by some of the festival scene’s most popular food vendors. Here are the Top 5 Food Vendors that were on site at Brainquility 2020!
1. The Grilled Cheese Incident - 5.0 - We LOVE the Grilled Cheese Incident. They almost always pop in and set up their booth at any festival hosted at Suwannee Music Park. The Grilled Cheese Incident was located in the vendor row directly in front of the Live Stage and they sling a variety of grilled cheesy creations that take the idea of a plain ole grilled cheese to the next level. The fact they were conviently located directly in front of the main stage and offer several affordable and filling options makes them the best vendor on site - hands down! We had the opportunity to try their hashbrown bowl for breakfast finally and it was out of this world! A delicious bed of fried hashbrowns, onions, peppers, and cheese topped with bacon, a fried egg, and a sriracha aioli. Oh and don’t forget to grab a cup of Space Juice! It is honestly so refreshing in between sets at a festival. Their Space Juice is a honey sweetened lemonade with pomegranate and mint. We highly recommend stopping by The Grilled Cheese Incident if you’re ever given the chance!
2. Spontaneous Consumption - 4.8 - Spontaneous Consumption made a return to Brainquility with their plates that are piled high with handcrafted deliciousness. Spontaneous Consumption offers a variety of delicious southern inspired favorites such as loaded baked potatos, pulled pork nachos, and a variety of flavored sweet teas. We had the opportunity to try their BBQ Nachos this year and they were out of this world delicious. Nachos piled high with pulled pork, pickled jalapenos, shreeded cheese, green onions, cheese sauce and sour cream. The one downfall to this would be there’s way more chips that topping. So if you’re not eating strategically, you will end up with a bed of chips at the bottom that have no toppings on them. So my tip would be to get a fork and eat more strategically that I did. Also, you can’t go wrong with their Peach Swet Tea! Definitely pair your meal with one of their delicious flavored teas. You will not regret it!
3. T&T BBQ - 4.5 - T&T BBQ made their Brainquility debut this year and they were a heavy contender again Spontaneous Consumption with their trailer. Their handcrafted bbq plates were - as we say in the south - smack you grandmama type of good. We had the opportunity to devour and order of their BBQ Fries and man…we’re craving another order. They pack a food boat full of crispy, crinkle cut fries and then load them down with pulled pork, bbq sauce and cheese sauce. So. Freaking. DELICIOUS. My little southern soul was not complaining at ALL. If you have a chance to stop by T&T BBQ you should definitely check them out!
4. Dude Pancakes - 4.0 - Dude Pancakes brought their tiny food trailer that packs a massive punch to Brainquility 2020. Their trailer focuses on well…you guessed it. Pancakes. They take pancakes and craft them into these beautiful dessert tacos that will send your tastebuds on a wild ride. We tried the Chef’s Favorite to sample something a little out of the box. It’s a pancake with Nutella, Strawberries, Marshmallows, and Candied Bacon. The bacon added a perfect saltiness to the dish so it wasn’t overly sweet. If we ever see Dude Pancakes in the future, I would definitely try the Popeye’s Pick to try something more savory from their menu. I would highly recommend stopping by Dude Pancakes - especially if you have a sweet tooth!
5. Rice, Rice Baby - 3.0 - Rice, Rice Baby was on site of Brainquility 2020 with their hibachi style rice and noodle boxes. As an avid fan of Island Noodles, this tent peaked my curiosity. I stopped by to try their Teriyaki Chicken Noodle box with Yum Yum Sauce. I was honestly less than impressed. The box was legitimately just chicken and noodles. I guess I was expected some vegetable mix-ins similar to Island Noodles. The vegetable mix-ins provide complimentary flavors in the dish as well as some variance in textures. Also, I was not a huge fan of the chicken swimming in Teriyaki sauce. Which honestly surprised me - I’m normally a person who loves to get lost in the sauce. I came back later and tried their Teriyaki Chicken rice box which was a step above the noodle box in my opinion. The only thing I would personally change is adding some veggies to the noodles so that there’s a variance in texture and there are other complimentary flavors present in the dish.

Dreams Turning in to a Reality
The Story of Brainquility Music Festival
Creative Ideation
Have you ever had a distant idea become a reality, and it surpassed all your wildest dreams? For most, these ideas rarely ever see the limelight, but for Chris Paoella and Tom Eckelamp, they hit the winning jackpot. It all started in 2016 when Chris and Tom were brainstorming their next business endeavors. Both of them grew up loving music and attending concerts frequently; they both knew they wanted to pursue a career in music. One night while they were living in Tampa, Florida, they both imagined themselves running a music festival together. They knew they needed a foundation for their dreams and thus, OnTapMusic was born. OnTapMusic is a collaborative music and event production company that curate’s music events and sponsors artists/musicians. OnTapMusic was the first step for Chris and Tom to make further their dream of producing a music festival a reality. OnTapMusic would serve as the production company to later produce Brainquility Music Festival. For Chris and Tom, understanding their goals and forming a solid idea was almost the easy part; they were confident they wanted to fill their lives with music. For others, this may not come as easy. Their desires and goals would be the forefront of their ambitions and would light the path for their future career with Brainquility. With their small music production company, Chris and Tom were ready to implement their ideas and make them a reality.
Getting the Ball Rolling
“Once we created our production company, OnTapMusic, we were ready to take the next step. We knew we wanted our message to be positive and attract all different kinds of people. After much thought, the idea of Brainquility was born,” said Chris, one of the creators of Brainquility Music Festival. “We wanted to bring light to the importance of mental health – which is where the idea of peace of the mind – hence “brainquility” came from,” remarked Chris. Surrounding their efforts around mental health and spreading the love of music, Brainquility Music Festival was born! Chris and Tom were off to the races. They began planning the logistical end of things and decided on a date and location. Chris and Tom were dedicated to creating a unique lineup, welcoming of all ages, and centered around the idea of peace of the mind – all of the other details would develop overtime. Large scale event planning is no easy task; in fact, it takes a significant amount of time, energy, and many detail-oriented decisions. The first Brainquility in 2018 was set for February in St. Petersburg, Florida, and would be a one day long festival with music, art, food vendors and local artists. Chris and Tom were overwhelmed but surely so excited for what was to come.
More on the Horizon
The first Brainquility went off with a bang! The all-ages event was a big hit that gathered a little under 1,000 people in attendance. The first year was the beginning though. Chris and Tom knew they wanted to make it bigger and better. This past year Brainquility was a 3-day long weekend that moved to a larger venue in Live Oak, Florida. This year the festival attracted over 750 new attendees with more than half of festival goers being returning “Brainiacs.” What was once faint idea became a real, well-thought out production that brought smiles to thousands of people! Surely, this is just the beginning for Brainquility - there's much more.

Dreams Turning Into a Reality
The Story of Brainquility Music Festival
Creative Ideation
Have you ever had a distant idea become a reality, and it surpassed all your wildest dreams? For most, these ideas rarely ever see the limelight,[LR1] but for Chris Paoella and Tom Eckelamp, they hit the winning jackpot.
Surely, this is just the beginning for Brainquility - there's much more in store on the horizon as the festival hopes to only expand and grow in the coming years.
