For a leading man in a massive series, Mark Harmon got to play Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs as a bit of a man of mystery on the “NCIS” franchise mothership series, at least up to the point that it had to exhaust whatever it was that put that haunted look in his baby blues. As portrayed by the actor over 22 seasons, Gibbs never did stop being the strong, taciturn type, but at the close of that tenure it didn’t feel like could possibly be much backstory left to mine, given the myriad flashbacks to the trauma that led the lawman to a seemingly permanent state of loner-dom. So when a prequel series for Gibbs was announced early this year, a series fan might’ve wondered: Is there any aspect of his pining for his dead wife and daughter that’s been left remotely unplummed?
But, as it turns out, “NCIS: Origins” does have a raison d’etre that doesn’t depend entirely on quickie corpse-of-the-week cases or on Shannon-and-Kelly redux. (Although, rest assured, there’s plenty of both of those.) Watching the first few episodes, you start to wonder whether the show’s existence isn’t just about milking Jethro for more tortured looks. It’s about rectifying a mistake the original series made, or at least a creative decision that was considered an error by much of the fan base: the killing-off of a beloved supporting character, Mike Franks, as a shocking plot point in Season 8. Once the series’ producers presumably realized that might’ve been a misstep, it was too late to bring him back — though God knows they tried, as character actor Muse Watson got to come back again and again as network television’s favorite recurring ghost (or, sure, imaginary conscience). With “Origins,” the franchise not only gets to resurrect Franks, but give Gibbs the chance to be part of a buddy drama. The new show looks like it will be more of a two-hander than first imagined… or at least, with any luck, it will be.
But as fans well know going into the Oct. 13 premiere, none of the cast members from the still-ongoing original series are returning to play their 1991 selves. (Sorry, de-aging fans… at least you have that upcoming Tom Hanks movie to look forward to.) Gibbs is played by — no, not Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon, who portrayed his dad’s character in multiple “NCIS” flashback episodes, and is executive-producing here — but by Austin Stowell, a relative unknown to most viewers. Stowell bears a resemblance to the senior (or junior) Harmon that is, shall we say, inexact. Kyle Schmid, who steps in for Watson as a 1991 Mike Franks, is closer to the guy we remember on screen, minus two or three decades of accumulated crustiness. Will you buy these two as younger, more livewire versions of the dynamic duo that never quite got its full due in the 2000s and 2010s? It remains to be seen how many episodes it might take for the fandom’s collective brain to do a complete reset, but you can guess that “NCIS: Origins” will get a long runway to try to accomplish that.
When we first re-meet Gibbs at the beginning of the two-parter premiere, “Enter Sandman,” his wife and daughter have already been killed, which is quite a relief — no one really needed a full dramatization of that buildup. He’s messed up enough by that still-recent tragedy that he’s failed a psych evaluation, we’re repeatedly told, yet Franks either has undue faith in his sniper-turned-investigator skills or just sees giving him the NCIS gig as a form of rehab. (Make that NIS, actually … the logos on the caps and jackets in the new series stay true to how the Naval Investigative Service didn’t pick up its “C” until 1992. It also jokily alludes to how, prior to “NCIS” going to series in 2003, few civilians had any idea what the hell either acronym meant.) They’re all working out of Camp Pendleton in California under the direction of Special Agent Cliff Walker (Patrick Fischler, always to be remembered by some of us as the guy who gets literally scared to death behind a diner in “Mulholland Drive”). For once in a primary “NCIS” series, neither Walker nor anybody else in charge is portrayed initially as an ambiguous, possibly adversarial figure — at least not yet; Walker just seems a little nervous and preoccupied.
No nerves for Mike Franks, though — a cocky, mustachioed figure of indeterminate Southern origin who wears his machismo and political incorrectness on his suspenders. The Franks of “NCIS: Origins” might be the least tortured of any special agent in franchise history, or at least since early-DiNozzio days. It will surely be easy to overplay the character’s inconsideration for polite norms, but viewers may get a kick out of the scene in an early episode where a suspect is seen being interrogated on video about his belief in the fearsome Mothman legend — and the show’s editors keep cutting to Franks leading his colleagues in uproarious, derisive laughter. Meanwhile, female team members have a locker room discussion over whether or not Franks is a misogynist who deliberately passes them over for promotions. He might be, but the character is so lovable that, if so, he’s probably in line for some enlightenment before the season is up. As played by Schmid, this Franks looks and sounds a little like a ruder and cruder Ted Lasso. It’s an enjoyable fine line to watch him play, in this early going.
Watching Stowell land in the role of Gibbs presents a bigger hurdle. Even his entrance music asks fans to reconsider the hero they thought they knew: He drives onto the Camp Pendleton base cranking up the Pearl Jam. Is that just to establish some period flavor, or is it really meant to blow our minds that Gibbs was once an Eddie Vedder kinda guy? (Franks, for his part, is introduced with some circa-1991 Hank Jr., rather on the nose.) Stowell seems like a hunkier, taller, more chiseled Gibbs than the one we met deeper into middle age, and indeed, the women in the office meet his first arrival at their headquarters with quick but unmistakably lustful double-takes. If anything, Stowell resembles a Brian Dietzen with a bigger neck more than he does Harmon — and he occasionally acts like him, too, having to play the guy whose mouth is sometimes agape as he is educated into the ways of gruesome corpses and crime-solving. Stowell isn’t that much taller than Harmon in real life, but he seems to tower over every other cast member here, a beefy athlete thrust into the role of preternaturally intuitive agent. He’s so un-Harmon-like in most ways, in fact, that it almost makes “Origins” feel more like a reboot than a prequel.
But of course the idea is that Gibbs was a different guy in 1991. Even with the trauma freshly under his belt, he’s still a naif in the woods, as well as a seasoned sniper. So maybe we’ll get more used to him, or the producers’ idea of him, over time. There are moments when you can feel Stowell leaning out of his naturally booming voice and more into Harmon’s quieter rasp — which is important, since Harmon does provide narration for the series, mostly at the beginning and end of episodes, offering thoughts on a life spent largely solitarily. (The original actor also shows up very briefly at the beginning of the pilot, presumably in the present day, chopping wood.) It’s hard to know which way the series might take the character — whether it’ll establish how he developed the essential loneliness Harmon played, or as more of a beloved partner to Franks, or a bit of having it both ways.
The first four episodes that were made available for review for critics concentrate plotwise on the franchise’s usual procedural cases, the elaborate details of which are forgotten as quickly as they’re farmed out, while fans accept these as the delivery system for the character stuff they love. Epidode 4 deals with the protection of a young daughter of a soldier overseas, something that inevitably brings up Gibbs’ guilt issues for having been on duty when his family met its end. The real inevitably is that — before long, probably in this first season — the show will recount how Gibbs went to Mexico to covertly kill the man responsible for his wife and daughter’s deaths, an incident long ago established in “NCIS” lore as having happened around 1991. In fact, Gibbs’ father, Jackson Gibbs (a gentle Ralph Waite in the original series, an angrier Robert Taylor in this one), shows up just in order to warn his son not to go to Mexico and do that. He may as well tell him not to build an indoor boat.
Gibbs has a potential love interest in this new show, Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), whom Franks in one unfortunate exchange accuses of being “in heat.” The portent of Harmon’s narration suggests that she may be in trouble for hitching her wagon to Gibbs’ — as does the fact that her character never made it to “NCIS” proper. Molino is an appealing actor, so maybe Stowell will get some of the love scenes that Harmon always seemed a little wary of doing himself, before she becomes something else for Gibbs to feel guilty about. It’ll be nice if they don’t kill her off — if the lead character gets to experience some anguish just because he moved on sexually too soon, not because he got somebody murdered again.
But it’s clear who Gibbs’ real love interest in “Origins” will be: Mike Franks. It couldn’t happen to a nicer couple of ringers.

Album Review of the Week: Janet Jackson - All For You (2001)
After 1997's Velvet Rope explored darker themes such as domestic violence and depression, All For You is a pivot into much more upbeat imagery and sound! I love Janet's sound, but for some reason my brain does not process hardly any of her lyrics in real time. Therefore, I was surprised to find out this album contains very saucy lyrics that caused it to be banned in some countries! Although, I have seen the Diane Sawyer dramatic reading. (To be fair, I didn't hear this full album until like 2 years ago and even still I don't listen to it front to back all that often.) Janet retains the title that I have given her, the Queen of Interludes, with this release - putting us at a whopping 20 tracks!
The production is fantastic, as always. Longtime producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are back with that legendary Minneapolis influence. Whether it is a dance bop or subdued sexy track, the beats are dynamic and the sound has a good amount of depth to make the listening experience very detailed. No sound gets buried under another in the smoothest way!
Janet's vocals are also top notch. This is especially evident during some vocal riffs on the opening song, You Ain't Right.
All For You, of course, is a must for any early 2000s or dance or uplifting playlist. It is bouncy, airy, fun and beachy. Come On Get Up is really fun as well, a great modernized funk sound!
In the middle of all the bops, we get quite a few sexy songs which does get old for me after just a couple. In my opinion, this section could have been cut down. Fortunately, we get back into the action with Trust A Try. I love the strings at the beginning and it just shocks into this crazy rock tone! This track has a fun dramatic energy.
Son of A Gun is a really cool track as well, some great bass and lower vocals going on - and Carly Simon is actually lending new vocals to go with the You're So Vain sample, along with some spoken word poetry! Although it does get a little repetitive at the end.
Truth is a slow, but very honest track, clearly about moving on after her divorce. I also must shout out the "o-o-h child" reference. An engaging ballad!
Someone to Call My Lover is the sister to All For You, in my opinion. It is bouncy, breezy and perfect for the same type of playlists! Really, this track is even a little more bouncy and fun.
Doesn't Really Matter is the most of its time in terms of sound. As someone who loves 2001 so much, I absolutely love it, but I can also hear any B or C-list singer having this on their album as well.
The album closes with a midtempo track, Better Days. It is smooth and engaging with a really neat guitar solo about 2 minutes in.
Clocking in at 1 hour and 13 minutes, the album could be cut down a little bit. With that being said, it is a solid body of work and shows a lot of production value with some great bops - and vocals!
Standout tracks: All For You, Come On Get Up, Trust A Try, Son of A Gun, Truth, Someone To Call My Lover, Doesn't Really Matter

Roll for Giggles Part 6
This is a slightly NSFW story that includes tickling, body worship and bondage, but no direct sexual acts. If you believe this deserves the NSFW tag, please let me know. You can read Part 1 HERE
If you like what you see, please let me know!
“Ok so lets review” they say looking down at the notebook they were using to keep track of the rolls. “Your legs, sides and armpits are going to be attacked by my scrubby gloves and paint brushes on dead medium intensity while you are tied spread eagle for 13 minutes” They finish reading and you can only squirm and your mind flutters from all they just said. You would say that you were flustered, but you passed by flustered when you rolled the six, and now you are well and truly ruffled! You have only had two sets of dice rolls and you were already driven to tears, your hair looks like it could be used as a bird nest, and you already have had a better cardio workout in the 33 minutes of getting worked over than you did in the 90 minute run you had yesterday. Now you are going to be completely exposed. Exposed. That thought makes your heart skip a beat. Before you met your ler, the idea of being exposed like this for anyone would have filled you with fear and terror, now? It fills you with anticipation, and a hint of a smile crooks the corners of your lips. Without being told to, you get up and walk to their bedroom, turn to the living room and ask “Well, are we going to do this or what?” You could almost swear that you saw smoke coming out of their ears as their brain crashed for a moment. They were not expecting you to ask that question as you are normally very coy when it comes to getting tickled. You let out a snort at their dumbstruck face and say “am I all dressed up with nowhere to be or are you going to come on?” That did the trick as they jump off the couch and make a beeline to their room as you slip in and start to strip their bed. They come up next to you and give you a hand. By now you two are a well oiled bed stripping machine. Within two minutes the blankets and sheets have been stripped, folded and put to the side. You stand with your arms and legs out as they attach short chains to the cuffs and tell you to hop on the bed and assume the position. You lay on the bed and willingly spread your limbs to the four corners of the bed. They take the chains and clip it to the screwed in O-rings attached to the posts. You strain against the chains as is tradition and they do not budge at all. You are fully exposed for your ler. Your belly is laid bare, your armpits are defenseless, your legs are on display for the whole world to see.
“Now to add to it” They say as they hold out the soft padded leather sleep that robs you of all sight. From first hand experience, you know that once it's in place not even the sensation of light from a flashlight held an inch from your face makes it through the seal that it forms. “Hey, wait a second!” You protest. “That wasn’t on the list! What are you doing?” As you roll your head trying to make it hard for it to put on. “As I said, I make the rules, I can change the rules. I gave you extra break time, I had you roll the D6 more times then you should have. Now with you having three different spots open for attack, I don’t want to spoil the surprise of where I am going to hit next. I want you to sweat a bit.” They steady your head and you reluctantly allow them to slip the blindfold on, and you are soon plunged into the familiar inky blackness that you have come to know all too well. You start to whine about the darkness, not knowing if the time started yet. You close your useless eyes to try to use all your focus on your hearing, but you know that with the carpet on the floor and them wearing socks on their feet, unless they hit something you wouldn’t hear them till it was too late.
It’s too late was the last thing you think before you mindseye goes white as you feel the thin metallic bristles of the scrub gloves give their cackle creating kiss on both of your armpits at once. A stream of shrieking laughter escapes sends your whole body into ticklish convulsions. You try with all your might to protect your poor pits that are being preyed upon by the gloves, but the chains will not give, nor will the strap break. Your mind is frantic in trying to find a way to end this, while it also unloads all the endorphins to make you love it too. You try to roll from side to side, maybe you can hide them in the mattress. The mattress, however, provides no refuge, nor does your efforts go unnoticed. “And where do you think you’re going?” You hear the voice of your ler, clearly enjoying themselves at your expense. “Are you trying to hide your soft, ticklish pits from me? Well that is just rude. I need to show you how I deal with rude people who try to hide their pits from me.” They say as they attack your pits with renewed vigor. Bucking and twisting, there is no escape from these thrice damned gloves. You do the only thing you can do, throw your head back and let go, letting the laughter consume you; mind, body and soul. “Yes, just let go and let me do my gleeful work” they say over the roar of your laughter. Somehow their teases make it even more ticklish.
Your mind is slowly going blank, with only tickly thoughts left. When, as quickly the assault on your pits began, it ended. The cavalcade of coerced chuckles slowly comes to a stop. Was that it? Did you already survive the time? The last few titters are leaving your mouth when they attacked again. This time the torrent of ticklish touches is sending warning bells to your brain from your left thigh and right abdomen, and it’s not just the scrub gloves either. On your sensitive side you feel the stimulation from what feels like three fingers of a glove and a soft paint brush, while on your thigh it's the palm of the glove and a stiff brush. In their best Monty Python impersonation they proclaim “NO ONE EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!” You scream in mirth and anguish at the same time as your chest heaves like the open sea, and you howl helplessly in laughter. “Awe, good, I was really worried you weren’t gonna like that joke” They comment as they work you over. You can’t even form words to describe how much you are not laughing at the joke, but because you can’t help it. You try to but it all gets lost in translation from what's left of your brain to the unending laughter coming from your chest. For the next eternity they change their angles of attack. They poke left, attack right, scrape your armpit only to scrub your thighs. They even found a NEW tickle button that neither of you knew about, behind your knees. That when properly motivated, made you melt into a glob of giggles. How dare you keep this secret from me! First you are rude and try to hide your perfect armpits from me. And now after all this time, I discover a new spot to make you smile! The audacity!” They say in mock disgust. The new tickle button was their favorite toy and you got to feel every bristle of their gloves and paint brushes on the fresh vain of chuckles. You were laughing so hard from all the stimulation that you didn’t even hear the alarm go off. In fact you didn’t realize it had gone off until you felt your head being lifted and the blindfold being removed. You strain your eyes against the light while your body is still giggling and chuckling at the remaining sensation on your skin.
As they unclip your chains from the bed, you just lay there. Your mind is on Pluto, all that’s left is laughter. Your face hurts from the smile that has been plastered on, your throat is sore from the strain of the session, your body is covered in sweat, your hair is… well, the less said about your hair the better. Your body is pink from the scrubbing, your face is red as a tomato from laughing. “Well, that wasn’t so bad now was it?” Your ler sits next to you and picks you up in their arms and brings you close to their chest. In one of their hands they have your water bottle, in the other they have your favorite protein bar. “You took that like a champ, and I am oh so proud of you” Their tone helps you calm down from the tickle crazed state you were in. They really were proud of you, you did take that like a champ. You take the water and start to drink it like you were in the desert for a week. “Woah there, you just been through the wringer, take it easy. It’s not going anywhere.” They say as they use the scrub brushes to fix your hair. You sink into their body, feeling at peace. You were wrecked, you were broken, but you were cared for. They made sure you ate the bar too. Every last crumb. “T-thank you” You croke out in a weak voice “T-th-this was a lot of fun. You are so inventive” you manage to say as you look at them. They just smile. “Come on, let's call that an hour dinner break then we go again if you’re up for it. Pizza’s on me!” They say, helping you stand and giving you support when your legs are shaky and they guide you to the living room, with your chains and cuffs still on, but you don’t care. You are happy here. They make you happy and you think you love them for it.

Started reading castles and it’s so good! Don’t know if saying this correctly but… how did you came up with it? Like what made your brain go “ I wanna write about this”?
aw thank you so much! glad you're enjoying!
wow, this is such a deep question. i don't think there was, like, one thing that made me want to write it. i didn't wake up one day with a fully formed idea of what this fic will be. even now, while i do have the overall structure in my head, i definitely also make things up as i go along. castles has known many iterations of itself over the years, and it just kept growing until i felt i was finally able to write it.
the first time i got the urge to write something was when i was 14, right after i first finished reading DH. i remember writing fic in my little school notebook during class. at the time, it was mostly a harry/ginny story about how-they-got-back-together after the war. i lost it and never finished it, but i remember very clearly it already had that sort of quiet, blurry sort of vibe that you get in the early chapters, especially chapter one. that sense of the calm after the storm, and not really knowing what to do with all that time. back then, i was writing exclusively shippy content, and so that's the sort of iteration it took. but i think what drove me to write it was this sort of frustration at the epilogue and at the "lack" of a direct aftermath of the battle. i'm not an epilogue hater, i actually like the epilogue for what it represents, but i think i would have liked more details on the characters and the "rebuilding" prior to it. i think that's where that came from.
the second time i tried to write it, i had just turned 18. i'd done a re-read that summer and by then, i already had a lot more writing experience under my belt (for context, i started writing at 13). i remember, again, it being post-war, and a sort of more "polished" product than what i'd written prior. i think i didn't finish it/publish it back then because a) the hugeness of the HP fandom scared me as a writer, and i didn't want to expose myself to the crazies, b) that's around the same time i fell into House MD, then TGW, and both shows took over my life, and c) i think, looking back, maybe some part of me knew i could write a better story, if i just waited a bit. but, it was then that i wrote the very first draft of what you will now know as the "first time" scene between harry and ginny, and also the line that has now become the fic's summary: to him, the spring of '98 is about sex and funerals. i remember this re-read was also the first time when i actually sat down and thought about what might have happened to ginny in hogwarts and (i'm remaining vague here cause you've said you only just started reading), had the idea for The Thing. which wasn't so much an "idea" as much as the fact that i was 18 and now a lot more attuned to the world i was living in as a young woman.
i picked up the books again in late 2017 (then, 24) and i remember pulling the story out of my massive archive of abandoned projects, and reading through it after finishing DH. i remember getting to the line "to him, the spring of '98 is about sex and funerals" and thinking: jesus, that's a good line, lol. and, i think at the time i wrote a bit more of it (i specifically remember writing the scene where ginny, ron and hermione help harry move in to his new flat - now chapter 3), but the issue was that i was knee-deep into writing another long-work in another fandom, and so this sort of took the backseat.
finally, we got to the 2020 lockdowns. i used the first lockdown to fully finish and put in the edits i wanted to add to my previous long work (which i'd finished writing in 2018). then, there was a second lockdown, and a third, and was a bit like: what now? and i re-read HP for comfort (considering the global crisis ongoing lol), and, well, the rest is history. i reviewed and repolished what i already had and put it out in september 2020. i thought to myself, i'll write another five chapters (LOL) and be done by december and, well, again, the rest is history.
so, i think, to answer your question, what made my brain go "i wanna write about this?" - time, really. the passage of time and the idea maturing in my brain. harry/ginny came first, then ginny, then the sort of broader environment (harry moving into a flat, etc), and finally, the overall arc of the story. i think the fascination with the post-war era is just - this idea that how do we get from kids who have been through so much and so deeply traumatised to "all was well". i remember seeing an interview from jkr once where she said that would probably have been the hardest part, and being like "yes, exactly." and, i think that fascination was always there, for me, but it just took a while to fully form.
which is something i now very much try to keep in mind: just because you abandon a project now, doesn't mean you are abandoning it forever. maybe it just needs more time in your head to fully bloom.

"girl help I already have so much headcanons for this au I'm never gonna write" .... show us the dystopian headcanons, Inny
Okay so this dystopia was percolating in my brain for a day or two before I could get it out. It's inspired by a lot of different sci-fi things, the biggest being Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age and that lovely tumblr story about the 100 point children.
It's set on a big-ass space ship colony, and you need credits for everything. Like, your basic needs will technically be met (large dormitories in your assigned work department/orphanage, fabricated Nutritionally Perfect food but not very tasty food, standard issue clothing, etc.) but if you want more, it costs credits. Credits are earned by working and possibly citizenship points, like that creepy Black Mirror episode.
So having your own place costs credits, but so does having kids, like a child tax. Don't think about the horrifying implications of that if you're not able to pay, don't do it, it's a dystopia remember.
Reggie's parents were just barely keeping their head above water, possibly due to spending their credits unwisely, possibly due to it being a fucking dystopia and they need to keep a bunch of people in poverty for the system to run. You know... like capitalism.
It’s not like spaces are officially segregated and all, but if you try to go to a park in a richer area as a kid in the standard issue (free) gray uniform... you’re gonna get picked on. Reggie learns early on where he’s ‘allowed’ to be and where he isn’t. Besides, after he starts going to work with his dad it doesn’t matter much anyway. Sometimes he sneaks out to the parks in the evenings or mornings (when normal kids are at school or in bed and his dad’s shift hasn’t started yet) so he can play on the Good Swings and stuff.
Rose and Ray both have pretty well-paying jobs (Ray watches the radar for asteroids and stuff on the bridge, as well as being a photographer, and Rose reviews and translates station-wide communications as well as being a private music teacher). Their kids want for nothing, they have a nice house, they have enough credits in savings that they’re ready for pretty much anything.
So at the end of the month Rose browses the internal logs, looking for places to donate credits. Regular donations go to the orphaned kids, so they can go to school, and she’s been known to pay off bullshit fines (“a teenager played their music too loud in the park and now the parents are facing downsizing their unit size to pay for it? That’s bullshit!”)
She kind of stumbles on Reggie by accident, thinking someone messed up the age from 31 to 13 on Reassignment Job Board. (She’s a reviewer after all, she can send a quick message through Internal Comms and get it fixed before someone is reprimanded and loses credits for a typo.) Until she reads his profile and his answers and is horrified. She talks to Ray, and then to Julie and Carlos, and oops, guess they have a new son.
Carlos is stoked to have an older brother. Julie is kind of horrified to learn there are kids who don’t get to go to school at all because their parents don’t have the credits for it, so of course she says yes.
-As soon as Rose and Ray have convinced Reggie that no, they did not take him in as some kind of live-in butler or cleaning service, but as a kid, they sit him down with a Pad and get him to pick out some stuff that costs actual credits for the fabricator to make. Reggie is very concerned, so he sorts from lowest-price and works his way up until he balks at the amount of credits. (Which is... pretty much anything that isn’t the standard issue uniform but in like a nice colour.)
When Rose catches on, she tells the Pad to hide the prices, take out the ‘sort by price’ option, and take out anything that doesn’t fit into ‘budget - kids’. Then she hands the Pad back to Reggie and tells him to try again. He can still sort by colour and style and stuff, but he can’t see prices. If he hits his budget, the things that cost too much turn red.
(He only figures that out because he adds something he knows is really expensive, like a hoverboard, to his basket, just to see where the limits of this ‘budget’ lie. And is then very flustered because hoverboards are very very expensive, so he’s allowed to pick out a hoverboard plus like, seven sets of pants worth of stuff?)
In the end, he picks out a lot of black. Because it hides stains, unless you’re cleaning with bleach, and also it’s what the pilots wear as their uniform and pilots are really cool. Black jeans (Ray and Carlos are wearing jeans.) Black shirts. Black shoes. But then he stumbles on a very soft looking red plaid shirt, and there’s an option to have the fabricator make a square inch of test fabric for free. And it’s so very, very soft. He rubs the fabric between his fingers while he selects that shirt, and follows the ‘more like this’ links to several more items. A hoodie. Some pairs of thick socks. A little black leather bracelet, which feels like the height of luxury.
His room already has a non-standard issue bed, desk, and dresser, but Ray reassures him that he can pick something else and they can feed these to the fabricator to get back some of the credits if he doesn’t like them. (He does like them. They look like wood, and the mattress on the bed is so comfortable.) He picks out a thick blanket that’s fuzzy on the inside, and a lamp that looks like a floating moon, and then, because there’s still budget left, a little statue of a horse, just to have something to put on the dresser.
He picks out a nice soft green for his walls, with a picture of rolling plains with long grass and a forest to cover one wall. He and Carlos sit on his bed and watch as the nanobots convert the boring gray walls, and that’s pretty cool too.
-Yes he gets his own stocking and it’s full of fun things (Carlos is mad at his parents they got Reggie socks, but Reggie loves his new socks. They have little pizzas on them!). His favourite is the little cube that projects stars on his ceiling, though.
-Of course Rose and Ray get him a dog for Christmas. It’s been haunting Rose ever since she read his answer on the questionnaire. It’s the last present of the day, and when Reggie opens his eyes, he immediately starts crying.
Carlos is very worried that he picked the wrong puppy, but Reggie assures him these are good tears, even though he can’t stop crying. They end up in a family group hug for like an hour, the puppy crawling from lap to lap.
Reggie names him Cosmo and he’s all ready to get a part-time job to make sure he has enough credits to feed him until Rose says no, the dog is family too, you don’t need to worry about that, Reggie.
-Reggie gets to go to school and it’s kind of terrifying but also really interesting. His reading and writing classes are mostly with adults and older teens who are going through apprenticeships, so thankfully he’s not stuck with the four and five year olds like he was worried he’d be. His math classes are with other freshmen, since he’s needed numbers for his job and he already knows basic math.
He meets Luke and Alex and Bobby in math class, and Luke immediately grabs him to be their fourth on the little pod of tables, because he’s new and thus interesting and otherwise Nick might have asked to join their group.
-Reggie has no idea what’s supposed to be wrong with Nick. He seems nice. Later, Bobby whispers it’s because Luke is jealous of Nick because his crush likes Nick more than she likes Luke. Luke threatens to stab him with a stylus while Alex rolls his eyes and discusses the next question with Reggie.
-Reggie likes his new friends, even if he doesn’t always understand their references.
-Julie introduces Reggie to her friends as well. He and Flynn get along great, since she takes everything he knows and doesn’t know and says in stride. Flynn only sees Cool Opportunities to introduce him to stuff like ‘mixing 4 soda powders together before putting them in the hydrator’ and ‘hiphop’.
Carrie kind of scares him. She’s one of those people who has enough credits to shoot Reggie out of an airlock and still get away scot free, and sometimes she looks like she’s contemplating just that. She sometimes scoffs when he doesn’t know something or says something ignorant (or poor), but usually a glare for Julie or Flynn mellows her out.
But she’s also the first to absolutely destroy some jerk who tries to make fun of Reggie for not knowing how to read. And when she learns that the clothes Reggie is wearing are his first non-free fabricator clothes, she drags him and Julie and Flynn to something called a ‘thrift store’. It has stuff that either wasn’t fabricated at all, but was brought here from colonies or even Earth. It had stuff that was limited edition and thus couldn’t be fed back into the fabricator. And stuff that was donated by people who either didn’t need to feed stuff back into the fabricator, or for some reason didn’t want to. Lots of designers apparently donated their collections to the Thrift Store.
And yeah, Rose and Ray gave Reggie an allowance but it wasn’t like he had a lot saved up. And what he did, some part of him still thought he should hold on to, even though he was pretty convinced Rose and Ray weren’t sending him back.
To which Carrie scoffed and was like ‘please my dad won’t even notice if I buy out this whole store, we are getting you a statement piece and that is final’.
They have a great time trying on all kinds of weird and wonderful and silly clothes, though. Flynn and Julie make him wear a fuzzy neon orange bucket hat and try to convince Carrie that This Is It This Is His Statement Piece, until she threatens to buy it for him and he scrambles to convince her he was just joking. The way she laughs at him doesn’t feel mean, and he lets himself laugh too.
He ends up falling in love with an actual, real, non-fabricator leather jacket that fits him like a glove. He even loves the smell of it, real and earthy. Carrie refuses to let him see the price as she scans the tag and pays for it, and he thanks her over and over. He even, in his best penmanship, writes her a thank you note (which he’s seen Carlos and Julie do to their grandparents on a colony when they sent Christmas presents) and gives it to her at school the next day.
He pretends not to see her tear up, and she pretends not to notice he spelled her name wrong.
-Reggie tries to contact his mom through the messaging system but all his messages get denied. He’s worried she’s maybe in trouble, so one day he puts on his old standard issue uniform and sneaks into the kitchens, only to find that his mom doesn’t work there anymore. She got a better job, one of her old coworkers says, and has a nice unit for herself now. Last time he saw her, she was eating out wearing some nice non-standard issue clothing, having cocktails with her new friends.
He doesn’t try and find her after that. He goes to his room and uses some of his pocket money to make the room soundproof and cries and cries until he can’t cry anymore. And then lies to Rose when she comes home and says he just had a frustrating homework assignment.
Ray sits with him that night and helps him sound out his reading, and doesn’t comment when Reggie maybe leans in a little. He even wraps his arm around him, giving him a little squeeze and a ‘proud of you, mijo’ when he finishes the chapter.
-Rose teaches him piano, and in his music class, he learns guitar. Luke is incredibly excited about that, and will let him practice on Luke’s guitar for hours, helping him adjust his fingers and showing him chords.
-Later he switches to bass, because Luke has talked about wanting to start a band, and they don’t have a bass player yet. He likes the deep tones, and Rose and Ray get him a bass guitar for his birthday.
-Birthdays! Who knew there was more to them than a little free cupcake from the fabricator? Not Reggie!

Series 7 Episode 13 - Nightmare in Silver (haha I definitely didn't forget to give this post a title....)
Alright, only two more episodes of series 7B to go, and we’re going to be checking out Nightmare in Silver. This was Neil Gaiman’s 2nd and currently final story penned for the show, and with the Doctor’s Wife being SO good, we’ll see if this is going to be another bright spark in 7B.
Unfortunately, there’s a reason this was Gaiman’s last story for Doctor Who. His experience writing this episode left a “bad taste” in his mouth, as he felt that he didn’t have enough agency dictating how the episode would end up. Mostly everyone in the production thought that more changes should’ve been made, and that the finished product wasn’t up to Gaiman and Doctor Who’s standards (sources for these interviews are listed at the end of the review x). These comments are important, because they reflect my views on this episode. There are a LOT of cool ideas in here, but it just doesn’t feel like a very cohesive story by the time the credits are rolling.
To show this, I’m just gonna bullet point all of the things that were cool about this episode:
Amazing casting choices
A theme park?? In SPACE???
Cybermen my beloveds
Doctor vs evil cyber Doctor 1v1ing in CHESS
They fortify a theme park ride as their base of operations
Just the magic of 11/Clara and the kids going on a trip to a theme park.. (that scene where they’re bouncing around in anti-grav god i WISH that was 7 year old me).
And I’m sure there’s loads more sdgklj. This episode is overflowing with really cool ideas and yet you look at it all together and it doesn’t work all that well :(.
Daisy cybermen rant #3 incoming y’all know I love these metal bois they’re my faves but this is an episode that REALLY doesn’t use them well. Sure there are *some* references to conversion and we see it happen to a couple of the characters, but ultimately the episode isn’t using the Cybermen to platform and talk about issues around tech, it’s just using them to fuel a runaround. With so many other villains, this would work just fine, but turning the Cybermen into chessbots and soldiers just makes them less threatening. You should look at a Cyberman and fear the possibility you could become them, and I get that from zero of the characters in this story. Also the Cybermen don’t have emotions so my fangirl brain gets VERY grumbly when cyber-doc suddenly has bucketloads of sass sdlgkhj.
TL:DR/Overview: Nightmare in Silver is a rollercoaster of an episode. It contains some fantastic ideas that it has the chance to explore, but a mishandling of its core villains and a lack of care taken WITH those really cool ideas mean that once again we have another underwhelming series 7B episode. Not even Neil Gaiman could save this one 🙁. C tier.
Sources:
P.S: God I want Neil Gaiman to showrun Doctor Who so bad I know it’ll never happen cause he mentions in another interview that he’d rather just write the odd episode but aaaa sdgk;ljs he would be so good if given the creative control.

Hi Mr. Boo I was wondering how does it feel having a god fatherly figure in your life? Also do you have games on your phone 👀
Hello to you too~
It's actually not too different from having a not-god dad. Not god-dad as in like your parent's really close friend, but like a dad. Who is also a god. It's not very different from having a not-god dad, because they're still a dad, just one who's closer to me and who can summon cranberries from thin air whenever I want to eat some. Because boy oh boy, do i love them cranberries~
Yes I do have games on my phone.
I have cookie run and also tetris
You cannot play them.
they are mine

Hello Mr. Boo, hope your having a lovely day. What’s your opinion on mushrooms?
HI! it's nighttime where I am but luckily for YOU my brain is being a JERK and will not let me sleep~
Mushrooms! I like me some mushrooms. Good in the garden, gooder still in a stew. Make for a good stir fry when you mix them with some onions. Like em on my pizzas even if my husband makes fun of me for that. He's one to talk since he likes to eat them raw. So does our son. He says he wants to be a mushroom some day. And Who am I to squander his fungal aspirations?
We have a family friend who's a mushroom elf if that is anything. his name's george. he's old and very nice. like 200 hundred years old. almost as old as my great grandma! kidding kidding. she's still forever young at heart <3
But yeah his name's george and I don't really ever talk to him unless I'm picking up our platonic boyfriend. he goes over to hang out at his place a lot to help in the garden. it makes him happy. he says it helps with his seasonal depression that makes me happy, too. him being happy not the seasonal depression. that makes me sad because I hate seeing him be sad
DID YOU KNOW THAT MOLD IS A TYPE OF FUNGAS??? DID YOU KNOW THAT MOLD IS WHAT MAKES CHEESE AND THAT IT'S MOLD WHEN YOU EAT IT?? THAT'S RIGHT!! CHEESE! IS MOLD! NOT JUST BLUE CHEESE OR MOLDY CHEESE OR WHATEVER, OH NONNOOJO NO!! IT'S ALL MOLD BABY YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA oh look at that, my brain's shutting off, weel shit, gnit

My husband just walked into my study and sat on my lap before asking me to tell him things that would “inspire distrust in our marriage and fill him with diresome dread.”
What did you all do to him? He said Tumblr told him to do this. What did you all do? What the fuck did you say to my baby?

no-eyed girl? but why not a no-eyed boy? perhaps I need a no-eyed boy to pop into our existance in order to feel convinced enough to bring both of out realities to an end through the power of a little smooch on the cheek. ya ever think of that?

TMNT 2036 Season 1
Ok so. I've laid out all the big players for my iteration. While there are still a few characters I want to go over, I think now I can actually go over some of my ideas for episodes, plotlines, and arcs. (Arcs will last around 13 episodes).
? Guide: One question mark means I don't know the order. Two question marks mean I don't know the order and the title. Three question marks mean I have a vague concept.
Arc One: Father Bother
As the turtles begin to explore the surface, an overbearing Splinter accompanies them. We set up the key players here.
Episode 1: "Welcome to Stockman Industries." On their 15th birthday, the turtles finally get to accompany Splinter to the surface. After some brief shenanigans, they are caught by MOUSERS. They are locked up, with Splinter being separated from them, and are planned to be experimented on. Local hacktivist April O'Neil, after discovering some shady things during her internship, attempts to expose Stockman Industries. She gets caught. To avoid leaving evidence, Stockman attempts to have her be eaten by the the turtles. Fortunately, they don't (though Raph is tempted). The turtles and April team up to escape and rescue Splinter. They take on WRATHS and MOUSERS. Bebop and Rocksteady easily overpower the turtles. April frees Splinter and he easily overpowers Bebop and Rocksteady. They all escape. Concerned with the Toe Clan's abilities, Stockman calls Shredder.
Episode 2: "Back to the Sewers". We explore the turtle's lair. The turtles and April try to convince Splinter to let the turtles back onto the surface. After an attack from some MOUSERS, Splinter agrees, for his family will never be safe until Stockman is stopped. Also, getting out of the lair would help prevent it from being discovered. Shredder reviews the footage of the turtles sent by Stockman, and sets his sights on them.
Episode 3: "The Technodrome". The Toe Clan and April go to the Technodrome, the coolest arcade in NYC. Shenanigans ensue. Stockman and Chaplin hack the robotic employees to attack the Toe Clan. At the end its revealed to the audience that the manager, Craig, is some pink, squishy brain thing. He plans to keep the turtles quiet at any cost.
Episode ?: "Misstep". Upon discovering the connection between the Foot Clan and Stockman, April O'Neil does some investigation and discovers the Foot Clan's criminal activity. Splinter, in disbelief that the Clan would go down this path, leads a mission to confront the Foot Clan. It's in this episode that we learn Splinter's pre-mutation backstory. We hear the greatness of Oroku Saki. Ironically, the Toe Clan has their first fight with Foot Elite. Note: Sometime before this episode (or maybe even in this episode) I want the turtles to tell April each of their conflicting ideas about Splinter's origin. Leo believes Splinter was once human and a respected ninja master, who was turned into a rat mutant by his fallen pupil. Raph believes that Splinter was once a famous action movie star, who spent years fighting in a death arena full of monsters. The exposure to gallons of monster blood slowly turned him into a rat mutant. Donnie believes that Splinter is the only successful attempt at a government project aimed to resurrect history's greatest warriors in order to create an unstoppable army. Mikey says a rat was accidentally enrolled in a dojo. The rat was later struck by lighting and turned into a rat mutant.
Episode ?: "A Day At The Aquarium". The Toe Clan and April go to the aquarium. They discover that it's a front for the Black Dragons Gang. They fight the Black Dragons and their gang leader, Xiomara Montes.
Episode ???: Introduce Hun and The Purple Dragon Corporation.
Episode ???: Introduce Bishop and X-Triad Agents. Supermarket set.
Episode ???: Mutant of the Week
Episode ???: Comic con adventure (subject to be moved).
Episode ? ?: "Wyrm Removal". The Toe Clan and April try to save the mutant worm, Wyrm. He doesn't make it easy.
Episode ?: "Unfriendly Competition". The turtles and April are trying to get enough Technodrome Tickets in order to get a limited edition Genghis Frog action figure. Unfortunately, some of April's bullies are after it too. Note: Karai and Casey (and Natsu?)
Episode ???: Leatherhead returns to the turtles. Splinter is not happy.
Episode 13: "Wrong Foot Forward". The Foot Clan and Stockman Industries enter an official partnership in order to take down The Purple/Black Dragons and The Toe Clan. Splinter breaks his leg. Note: Well, Splinter actually doesn't break his leg, Foot Elite breaks it. You see Foot Elite has a power-level of 4 turtles, meaning that really only Splinter can go one on one with him. At first, Splinter is going all out on him. However, during the fight, Foot Elite's hat and faceplate is knocked off, revealing that he's Oroku Saki. This is a shock to Splinter and the audience. Well, maybe. Even as the Foot Elite, Saki still uses his vambraces. Meanwhile, Hattori Tatsu as Shredder uses only a sword. Now that Splinter knows he's fighting his former master, best friend, and brother, he starts holding back. This held him open to a devastating attack by Saki. Note 2: The partnership results in Foot Tech Ninjas and prototype Footbots.
Arc Two: Bad Friends
Episode 14: "First Steps". Wanting revenge, the turtles attempt to take the Foot Clan head on and sabotage their deal with Stockman. But without Splinter leading them, the mission faces major setbacks. Meanwhile, Splinter tries to join the boys despite his leg. A mysterious figure makes this even harder. Note: It's The Rat King. And he's gonna be with Splinter for the rest of this arc.
Episode 15 "Rat Cage": The turtles do everything in their power to make sure Splinter stays put and heals. Escapades ensue. Meanwhile, Donnie gets an online girlfriend. Note: This is mainly so we have time for "Metalhead2021" to be regularly mentioned throughout the latter half of the season. This is a surprise tool that will help us later.
Episode ???: Turtles learn Craig's true identity: Krang. Note: Must come before "My Lab Teacher's a Monkey"
Episode ??: Bishop is forced to team up with Zog. After an "accident" with her breathing apparatus, the turtles get their own personal Triceraton Warrior.
Episode ???: Meet Nobody
Episode ?: "My Lab Teacher's a Monkey". April is stuck with Casey as a lab partner. Krang gives the turtles special holographic technology to look like humans. They attend school with April. An accident results in the mutation of April's science teacher, Dr. Rockwell.
Epsiode ??: Bishop leads an all out attack on Krang.
Episode ???: Foot Tech Ninjas
Episode ???: Mutant of the Week
Episode ???: Protoype Foot Bot
Episode ??: Thinking that his brothers aren't doing enough to stop the Foot, Raph becomes the vigilante Nightwatcher. He meets the vigilante Skullcrusher, and the two become a force to be reckoned with.
Episode ??: Donnie finally meets his online girlfriend face to face. His brothers are incredibly suspicious.
Episode 26: "The Gauntlet". With Stockman's new mech suit about to be unveiled, The Toe Clan springs into action. Splinter has a rematch with Foot Elite. The Turtles face the Shredder. Everyone faces the Stockman Pod.

Mindfulness: A Pathway to Enhanced Wellbeing and Focus
Introduction
Mindfulness has become a hot term all over the world, but what does it mean and how it can change our lives? In particular, it refers to the skill of being completely absorbed and free of any distractions or evaluations, which promotes optimal mental and physical health. This blog post gives an insight into the neuroscience of mindfulness and offers simple exercises to introduce it in daily life.
Understanding Mindfulness
Mindfulness is about creating an overall state of active, open-minded awareness of the now. This method will enable us to learn to perceive our thoughts and emotions without being overpowered by them. According to Hoshaw (2022), mindfulness is a straightforward technique that helps in improving mental health conditions by lessening stress and improving emotional reactivity.
The scientific-based evidence of mindfulness is very suitable. Research has indicated that being mindful can alleviate stress, enhance cognitive flexibility, and even lead to better relationships (Yousefi Afrashteh & Hasani, 2022). One of the main effects of mindfulness is regulating the brain’s response to stress or emotions.
Scientific Insights into Mindfulness
We find the study of Dudi (2024) to be important in that it demonstrates how mindfulness-related cognitive strategies can modulate brain activity, further highlighting its ability to rewire neural pathways related to mental health. Furthermore, Schuman-Olivier et al. (2020) present how mindfulness serves the purpose of behavior changing by developing self-control and awareness.
Furthermore, mindfulness has been shown to have direct links to physical wellness. As indicated by NIH (2021), practicing mindfulness can reduce the strength of illnesses related to stress as well as modulate pain. This, therefore, shows mindfulness as not just a brain game but a complete health practice.
Mindfulness Exercises
The Mayo Clinic (2022) offers several simple mindfulness techniques for integrating them into everyday routines.
Mindful Breathing
• Take a seat in a place that is peaceful and relaxing.
• Give your full attention to the breath.
• Breathe in deeply through your nose and let your chest and stomach move up as you do so.
• Exhale slowly through your mouth.
• Go on breathing deeply throughout for a few minutes, taking account of each breath.
Body Scan Meditation
• Lying down on your back, make sure to keep your legs uncrossed and your hands at your sides.
• Direct gradually and carefully your attention to every part of your body, from the toes to the head.
• Know about any sensations, emotions, or thoughts that are linked to different parts of your body.
Mindfulness is more than just a practice it's a way of living that encourages us to experience each moment fully (Pandwal & Bhatt, 2023). Whether you are dealing with stress, seeking to improve your emotional well-being, or simply want to enjoy a richer, more fulfilled life, mindfulness offers valuable tools to help you achieve these goals. Start small, perhaps with the mindful breathing exercise, and gradually incorporate mindfulness into your daily life for better health and increased peace of mind.
