I see jokes about Toph being unable to write. And they're funny, and fit in canon. But hear me out: Toph could TOTALLY learn how to write.
Her bending is absurdly fine tuned (exhibit a, her sandbending a model of an entire city) and that needs to correlate to her movement in general so fine motor control is a piece of cake to her. While stuff written on paper might vex her she could still totally be taught letters and words, either by the Helen Keller method or just writing them in the dirt or sand in front of her. While she can't visualize it she can still learn to mimic the motions of writing, so in theory she can totally learn how to read and write, just she can only read stuff with a 3D aspect to it, and she might have some trouble with margins.
And then she could use he knowledge to take it a step further and invent the AtlA version of Braille. And then use her bending to just make it really commonplace. Trying to figure out what she'd call it though. Maybe since Earthbenders could all in theory learn to sense vibrations and shapes it could eventually be learned by a lots of Earthbenders for secret messages, not just blind ones, but Toph's primary goal with it would still be helping herself and other blind folk.
Bumi of course would learn it immediately and then be like "yo Toph I transcribed all the craziest scrolls in my library into your new alphabet/language you wanna read" and she's like "sure" and like half of them are just wacky stories Bumi likes but the other half is like all the stuff he knows about Earthbending that Toph doesn't (on account of her being self-taught) and she takes that knowledge her own rad knowledge and skillz and then revolutionizes Earthbending AGAIN. Possibly leading to the discovery of being able to bend more stuff.
This leads to further research, which leads to further shenanigans, which leads to further revolutions, which leads to Earthbending practically launching way ahead of the other bending techniques in terms of applications. The waterbending's advancement continues to be blockaded by traditionalists (Not that it stops Katara it just makes it harder for her), Aang is like literally the only Airbender and so he can only do so much to improve airbending, and while Zuko and Co are trying to do cool stuff with firebending (featuring DRAGONS) he kinda has to keep it on the down low because everyone's still wary of the Fire Nation. But Toph has literally nothing stopping her so she and Bumi just kinda steamroll their way forward into making Earthbending extremely overpowered.
So basically LoK would have been a heck of a lot more interesting if Toph had learned to write.

Do you think Braille was ever invented in the Avatar universe? Or, if it was, it was done in a way related to bending? Like earth bending immediately leads to forming Braille from the stone, but what about temperature difference for fire benders? Air pressure or water pressure? It interests me, along with the possible scale of standard literacy in the various nations.
Ooo that's an intriguing idea! I'm no expert on Braille but I assume it would require some kind of standardized printing. I think the other bending styles would be too difficult to maintain, so ice and stone would be the only ones that make sense to me. Someone with really refined bending abilities could probably imprint tablets with the patterns. Although another cool option for air and fire might be tablets with holes all the way through, and the bender could draw or push air through them to sense the patterns. That might only work for benders, though, whereas raised bumps could be used by anyone. (I'm not sure if fingers can detect tiny holes as easily as they can tiny bumps.) Once printing presses (and the ability to create the raised bumps on paper/parchment) became a thing, I imagine it would be accessible to everyone with the right technology! Hard to say who would invent it first, though, or whether multiple nations would convergently create similar methods!

Hey, has anyone in the ATLA universe invented braille? That last post about Toph made me wonder. It seems like something particularly easy for an earthbender to do: write on stone tablets, raising little dots with each tap of a fingertip, then brushing them clear at the first sign of a mistake.

Fun Facts about the Childhood AU!!
1). CJ is 37, while the triplets are 16!! 2). It takes place during the 2000's! Specifically, 2005! Meaning, CJ's birth year is 1968, and the kids were born in 1989! Which also means if they were alive today, CJ would be 56, and the triplets would be 35! 3). Atlas is a huge Tally Hall fan, but is super bummed that they're in America and he's in Australia. His biggest wish is to go to one of their shows. 4). The triplets usually get into lots of mischeif and mayhem, some of which have some...paranormal properties to them. When they were young, CJ just brushed it off as kids being kids, but as they grew older, and the stories didn't stop, he began to get a little worried. 5). CJ's birthday is February 5th, in reference to Chonny's IRL Birthday. The Triplets, however, were born on December 3rd, which is when the THA/TME/TSE videos came out. 6). During Darrel's first days in their care, Juno (Artemis' seeing eye dog, for anyone unaware) used to chase him around the yard. Juno thought of it as a fun game, but Darrel was scared shitless. 7). Atlas is in the Drama Club. No questions asked. Following up, I think Apollo would be in some sort of afterschool mathematics club, and I don't think Artemis would be in any club. 8). CJ is a musician trying to sell his music, but nobody really seems to care. His sons are the top supporters of him, though! Atlas practices choreography with it, Apollo likes to study to it, and Artemis just likes listening to it. 9). The triplets never knew their mother's name, as CJ wouldn't tell them. In fact, NOBODY would tell them. The only thing anyone would tell them was that she died while giving birth to them, and she was a "wonderful woman". 10). Artemis, unfortunately, has never learned Braille. He can't seem to grasp the information.

How to Write Vision Impairments (from a vision-impaired writer)
In my experience, most books that include a vision impaired character has the character either 100% blind or just impaired enough for their vision to be perfectly corrected with lenses. So, here's some tips from a vision-impaired person.
Blindness and vision impairment is a spectrum.
It's not 100% blind or perfectly corrected with lenses. I'm legally blind, but I'm still able to see a fair bit of stuff and I wear glasses. My glasses don't actually do much in the sense of correcting my vision - instead, they give me depth perception, and my lenses have prisms in them (more on that in a few).
"Legally blind" does not mean fully blind. It's just used as a way to define how much vision loss means you shouldn't and/or can't work, drive, or other things that seeing people can do without thought. In the US, 20/200 with best correction is considered legally blind, which basically means you can see 20 feet of what seeing people can see at 200 feet. It's essentially 10% of working vision.
There's a lot of visual aides!
A lot of people think that the only type of visual aides are screen readers, Braille and the white cane (also known as the "blind cane").
There's actually a lot more visual aides! There's things such as talking clocks, bleedthrough-proof "markers" for boldened writing, boldened lined paper for easier seeing of the lines, large print calendars, amongst other things. I personally use have a backlit, large print keyboard to help me type and I have 2 magnifiers that help me when I have to read regular-print things. If you know Braille, you can also get stickers to put on your keyboard to help you type that way too!
Not every blind person is born blind.
This may seem obvious, but a lot of blind people lose their vision progressively through life. This can be from genetic conditions, or it can be from things like cataracts. Personally, I was born with vision issues, but it's been aggravated by my nystagmus (explanation soon), so I'm slowly but consistently losing my eyesight.
Ways to write blind characters
Like most disabilities, don't make it their entire personality. This doesn't mean don't ever ever mention it, just don't make it something that is constantly talked about or it's the only reason their friends stay with them. If you want a well-written blind character, look at Toph from ATLA. She's blind, yeah, but it isn't her entire character. People's reactions to her is also pretty accurate, especially where her friends would sometimes forget she's blind (I've had this occasionally, even with my spouse - I don't act blind, so people tend to forget about it until a situation where I need aided because I don't make it my entire personality, nor do I harp about it constantly).
Let them have aides other than the "typical" ones. Like I mentioned earlier, there are a ton of aides out there past screen readers, Braille, the white cane or seeing eye dogs.
If the character is in the lower economical classes, there's nonprofits out there that will help you get aides and training. That's how I got my white cane and other aides! And, typically, these nonprofits ask for nothing in return, except that you return the equipment in the case of your vision gets better or you move out of the nonprofit's district.
Don't make it a big deal. Don't make a big scene happen when the character picks up their white cane or grabs their seeing eye dog, or just mentions "hey, I'm kinda blind" (can also say "vision-impaired") "so I can't really see that". Just have the other character be like "oh okay". It's really like that type of exchange in the real world. There's very few instances where someone will be like "yeah right" or "oh I'm so sorry" and begin pitying/babying.
Your character should have a solid, medically explainable reason to their blindness/vision-impairment. This probably sounds pretty obvious, but there's a lot of things that can cause vision loss or legal blindness. I have a nystagmus, which is basically a fancy medical term to say I have uncontrollable eye movements. These movements can be subtle or extremely obvious. Most of my fits are extremely obvious, and I've sat for over 2 hours before with nonstop movement of my eyes. My eyes shake horizontally (left and right), but the eyes can move vertically (up and down) or in a circular path. This can cause severe headaches.
Remember when I mentioned my corrective lenses have prisms in them? This is one technique that doctors may use to try and help lower the activity of a nystagmus. I have 5-7 prisms in my left lens and 7-9 in the right lens (this is actually a really high amount of prisms and my lenses are super thick because of it). Most nystagmus' have a viewpoint called a "null point", in which the nystagmus's activity drastically decreases (it may still be present, but the severity of it lessens). For me, that is the far right gaze (looking out of the corner of your right eye, like you're trying to see to your right but without turning your head), and the prisms in my lenses attempt to force my eyes into the far right gaze even when I'm looking straight.
Most of all, do your research. Nothing is worse than having a character written in a poor manner, and it's obvious when someone doesn't do their research.
I might do this again for some of the other disorders/disabilities I have, but yeaaaa.
#blind#i'm sick of only seeing fully blind or barely vision impaired characters#diversity#writing#writerblr#hope this helps#disabled#actually disabled

She for example when sitting next to someone can see them, their face, nose, mouth, eyebrows, eye indents (even eyes if she's close enough) but she won't be able to see eye colors. As another example if she's standing across the street from a street sign she'll see the signs Height, shape and color but won't be able to read it. Her depth perception also isn't so good.
- She cab read and write Braille fluently.
- She uses a white cane when in New/unfamiliar places.
- She's 5'2.
- Her hobbies are crystal collecting, reading, training for battle, spending time with Nico & Hazel and playing chess.
- She's very kind, caring, smart, protective, brave and hard working.

- She's the best theif of all of Hermes's living Demigod Children.
- She holds Chiron in high regard and shows him (and Mr. D) a surprisingly high amount of respect and behaves herself when they ask/tell her too.
- Her hobbies are pranking people, climbing trees, building Legos and doing sports like Track and Cross Country.
- She comes only during summer and lives with her mom otherwise.
- The necklace she wears turns into a sword when taken off by yanking the crystal and turns back when the handle is twisted a certain way.
- She's very mischievous, energetic, friendly, protective, mildly sarcastic and clever. She often shows new campers around and keeps a watchful gaze over the younger ones so they stay safe.

Atlas is actually mute!! So they speak primarily in sign language!! They do write or type things out for those that don’t speak sign so they do know English!! They do know some Morse code and can read Braille!!
I got a question I know if I don't ask it rn I'm gonna be stuck, but does the children talk another language? Like bilingual? Morse code and others can be counted on my ask :)

) Síguenos en Facebook | @AcapulcoPress Read the full article

Sokka “inventing” braille and the Gaang “teaching” it to Toph has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves in ATLA fics. I think people mean well, but in real life braille was actually invented by a blind man, not to mention that Toph is a super clever girl and I’m sure she’s more than capable of figuring it out herself.
I've never seen this in fics but I agree.
ATLA having Toph not be able to read or write was the biggest bullshit, oh my god, don't get me started. Toph is from an extremely wealthy family, and even though they sheltered her she also found her way around learning what she could because she wanted to. Tactile writing systems were a thing even before braille, and if you go back far enough, a blind person would be able to read what was carved into a clay tablet by feel. So the idea that blind people didn't read or write at all until the invention of braille is bs, which is why most people don't realize that blind people invented it.
ATLA is willing to do so much to get around Toph's disability (which I have mixed feelings about) but they can't bother making up some bullshit about how she can sense the carbon on the paper?
I can easily see her inventing it herself, too, since she is so creative with her bending and she can create vast strucatures of earth at the drop of a hat. She could single-handedly mass produce earth-based tablet versions of popular texts with tactile script so that people like her would have access to them. Literally earthbending, which comprises most of the bending population, is based on blind badger moles and you're gonna tell me nobody thought of how to make things accessible?
On the subject of "weird things people do in fics" I also hate it when people say you HAVE to give Toph a cane or a seeing eye dog. And I mean, I like fics that do that, but unless it's a no bending au, it's not like she ever needed that in the series, and even if it is a no bending au, not every blind person uses those things. Many do, but not all, because people are not one size fits all.

In the meantime, he learns how to read Braille and Fiddleford makes some doohickeys that accommodate Ford's new circumstances.
And Stan does in fact steal a seeing eye dog as he said he would. But Ford doesn't need it. He discovers within a week or so of going blind that he's inherited a gift from his father Hermes that he didn't know about before.
Ford learns that, thanks to his father's role as the god of travel, he is never lost. He always knows exactly where he is and how to get to where he wants to go. It's almost like the seismic sensing Toph uses in ATLA.
It keeps Ford from running into things, but he's still very much blind.
Oh, and Stan keeps the seeing eye dog for his kids lol
Btw yes Ford in my Olympian Falls AU is able to curry enough favor from the gods that they reverse course and give him his sight back
(which he lost as punishment in the thing I posted yesterday)
But it takes years for this to come to pass. In fact, the good deed he does that earns him his sight involves helping Dipper and Mabel with a world-saving quest
