Know The Importance of Early Orthodontic Care
When it comes to the dental health of children, early intervention can make a significant difference in their long-term oral health. Milford Kids Orthodontics is dedicated to providing specialized care tailored to the unique needs of young patients. At Motor City Smiles, we understand that early orthodontic evaluations and treatments can set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
Why Early Orthodontic Care Matters
Orthodontics is not just about straightening teeth for aesthetic purposes; it's about ensuring proper function and health of the mouth and jaw. Early orthodontic care can identify and address issues before they become more serious problems. By visiting Kids Orthodontics Milford, parents can ensure their children receive the best possible start to their dental health journey.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Evaluation
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. At this age, many of the permanent teeth are starting to come in, and our orthodontists can identify any potential problems. Here are some key benefits of early orthodontic evaluations:
Early Detection of Issues: By identifying problems such as crowding, misalignment, and bite issues early, we can plan a treatment strategy that will be more effective and less invasive.
Guidance of Jaw Growth: Early intervention can help guide the growth of the jaw, ensuring that it develops properly. This can prevent more severe problems later in life that might require surgical intervention.
Improved Oral Health: Correcting misalignments and bite issues can improve overall oral hygiene. Crooked or crowded teeth can be harder to clean, leading to a higher risk of cavities and gum disease.
Boost in Self-Esteem: Children who undergo orthodontic treatment often experience a boost in self-confidence. A beautiful smile can have a positive impact on a child’s social interactions and self-image.
Treatment Options for Kids
At Milford Kids Orthodontics, we offer a variety of treatment options tailored to the needs of young patients. These include:
Braces: Traditional braces are often the go-to solution for many orthodontic issues. They are highly effective in correcting alignment and bite problems.
Invisalign First: For eligible patients, Invisalign First offers a less noticeable and often more comfortable option for straightening teeth.
Palatal Expanders: These devices help to widen the upper jaw so that the upper and lower teeth fit together better. This can be particularly useful in preventing overcrowding.
Space Maintainers: If a child loses a baby tooth prematurely, space maintainers can help keep the space open until the permanent tooth erupts, preventing alignment issues.
The Milford Kids Orthodontics Experience
At Motor City Smiles, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for children. Our team is trained to work with kids, ensuring they feel safe and at ease during their visits. We use the latest technology and techniques to provide the best care possible.

What Are The Different Stages Of Braces Treatment
If you are planning to get braces, or already are in the midst of the treatment, knowing the stages of the treatment will help. We are going to take you through the key stages of New Milford braces treatment and what you must expect.
We know getting braces is a bit difficult, you can choose clear Braces in Sandy Springs, Braces in East Cobb to ease your time with orthodontics. Coming to our primary topic of discussion, braces treatments are divided into the following three key stages:
The Planning Stage
The very first stage of braces treatment is to figure out where your teeth need to move to and how you can align your bite. This is also done with the help of a combination of technology, such as X-rays or scans or photos along with an examination from the orthodontist. Once the examination has been done, you can decide what type of braces will suit you.
The Active Stage
This is the stage where you already are dealing with the braces in the mouth and your teeth have already started moving. You might feel a bit of tenderness, pain or discomfort during this stage – but this will pass with time.
Once your teeth are in the right position, your orthodontist will start correcting your bite and add things such as elastics or springs to your braces to help expedite the process. This also helps to ensure that the upper and lower dental arches are aligned and that your teeth bite together harmoniously.
Last – the retention stage
For everyone, the final stage of the braces is the most exciting one. While at this stage, the braces will be off your mouth, there is still maintenance work left to be done. A key part of looking after your teeth after the treatment of braces is to put on retainers so that your teeth remain in the same position for a long time. You will come across two different types of retainers – the fixed retainers and the removable ones. Fixed retainers are usually made from a thin wire that is bonded behind the upper or lower front teeth. The removable ones are like the clear aligners given during Invisalign. Whether it is the fixed retainers or the removable ones, you need to wear them all through the night.

Season 1, episode 2: Sean Beef
Spoiler alert!!! This is a rewatch recap of Snowpiercer s1e2: Prepare to Brace. Naturally, it is full of spoilers for that episode. However, it also contains spoilers for some other episodes of season 1 and season 2. You have been warned!
It’s the morning after the battle. Josie provides this episode's voiceover, and explains that the only thing keeping her alive is petty spite. Highly relatable.
Meanwhile, Ruth is making sure to get her 10k steps in by walking to work through puddles of yesterday’s spilled blood. She takes to the IKEA stool/stage, and then continues Till’s tradition of treating the tailies like naughty school children.
Tumblr media
We learn that Josie and her clever revolution bandana managed to hit the sweet spot between sexism and white woman privilege: she’s completely off the hook for killing two Jackboots last night! Winnie, however, is not so lucky. Strong Boy’s personal trainer is plucked from the crowd, and for a tense moment the Tailies prepare to watch a five year old child get her arm frozen off. Thankfully, Winnie’s mom, Suzanne, rushes forward to volunteer as tribute. Ruth returns one foot to the stage, and announces that Suzanne Everdeen will be the Tail’s first ever volunteer.
There’s no doomscrolling Twitter before bed on Snowpiercer. Instead, they’ve created their own version: the Notary reads Z-Wreck, Strong Boy and Pike their rights - or, more accrately, their lack of rights. She also hints at some strange culty vibes. Fun! Then, Klimpt puts the revolutionaries into suspension in the drawers.
On a brighter note...
Nope! Just kidding! It’s actually worse in the Tail. Much, much worse. Suzanne’s arm gets frozen and shattered into rat food.
Tumblr media
Josie then finally does the last part of the opening monologue. I don’t think I’ve ever heard “eat the rich” said in such a posh accent before.
After the opening credits, Melanie is having a lovely, nerdy time marking Javi’s homework, when the train begins to shake.
Just like a family of rats in a geothermal vent, unnecessary gendering has, unsurprisingly, survived the apocalypse: we find out the train is a girl.
Diversity win! Another woman in STEM!
Bennett and Javi casually inform Melanie that the train has triggered a few avalanches this morning. In return, she informs them that she has to go and deal with First, who are being overdramatic about just two little murders and one tiiiiny uprising. Javi would like to continue discussing the issue of the deadly avalanches with his superiors, and he insists they need to slow the train for safety. But Melanie thinks an avalanche would be less scary than Lilah Folger’s reaction to closing the Jacuzzi car for a couple of hours. So, she puts on her Manager Hat, ignores Javi’s very valid concerns, and tells him to just do what she says. Javi wears the expression of a weary employee who knows he’ll get the blame when everything inevitably goes wrong.
Layton - who was apparently allowed to go back to bed for five more minutes after watching his friends get drawered - gets woken up by his new dad Roche. Till has a very pretty bruise on her jaw, and she’s grumpy because it’s Layton’s fault. Roche tells Till to be nice to her new brother: they’ve gotta spend the whole day together!
Tumblr media
We move on to… another full shot of a naked ass! That’s two for two, so far. After their public biosecurity showers, some tailie sanitation workers run into Layton and Till on their way to their slavery shift. They barely get to interact, though, before the scene cuts to Melanie and Ruth’s daily flirting appointment in the First class dining hall.
Melanie’s W badge is upside down: turns out she was working for Milford Industries all morning. We don’t linger on that for very long though, because the iguana has to make another quick cameo! It's wearing the same outfit as the previous episode, which strikes me as very unusual for a first class passenger. I wonder if it lost its luggage at departure?
Ruth then notices Melanie's badge, and because it’s still Flirting Time she reaches forward and spins it around. In response, Melanie makes an expression that’s gayer than any joke I could ever write, and the good ship Mel/Ruth catches another wave.
Tumblr media
Lilah Folger and Mr. Sharma are worried about the rebellion, so Melanie does a little bit of gentle gaslighting to keep them calm. Lilah reveals that she used to be a lawyer, and LJ immediately publicly drags her mother. She’s a better comedian than Osweiller, at least. Lilah Sr. replies by casually reminding everyone that the freeze taught them all that they have the capacity to kill. Excuse me, what? Is she threatening to kill her daughter over a joke? Did she just admit to killing people? Is she also accusing Melanie of killing people? (e.g. Wilford and/or Alex?) I need a chat with Lilah Folger asap to dissect that comment, please.
Till takes her new big brother to the chains, where he receives verbal abuse and sees some more foreshadowing - a baby! Till and Layton grab some noodles with Jakes, the Tunnelman who found the body. Layton asks him “Hey, if I were to lead a band of revolutionaries through the train, what checkpoints would I need to worry about?” But Till is a quick learner: she detects what Layton is doing, and stops Jakes from answering the question.
In the clinic, Nikki’s having a pretty rough time waking up. Jinju suggests that maybe Mr. Wilford should stop drawering people because it’s clearly dangerous and doesn’t work properly. But Melanie and Klimpt don’t care about little details like that!
Meanwhie, Till and Layton have finished their noodles, and visit the nightcar!
Tumblr media
Miss Audrey’s foreshadowing medium of choice is song, so she treats us to a few lines of Say it ain’t so, Joe(seph Wilford). The song includes several on-the-nose gems, such as:
We’ve pinned our hopes on you, Joe
One man’s word held the country together
We’re clinging to his charm and determined smile but the good old days are gone
The image and the empire may be falling apart
I’m sure they’re telling us lies, Joe
The truth is getting fierce
So, by the time Layton asks Audrey about Melanie Cavill’s role on the train and she replies, “It’s her lips to God’s ear, isn’t it?”, we can be relatively sure that Audrey knows Melanie is Mr. Wilford.
To firmly establish herself as a true ally to the working classes, Audrey gives Layton a free drink and gets him some time alone with Zarah. Audrey and Zarah do a very poor job of describing what they actually do in the nightcar, and instead let Layton experience it for himself.
Layton’s nightcar experience takes him back to the day he proposed to Zarah. It’s a cute scene: they’re both naked, in bed, and they’re about to share donuts when Zarah notices a ring fall from one of them. Then, I shit you not, Layton asks her, “You wanna do this thing?” Zarah, very understandably, does not immediately say yes to his lame ass proposal. But, after a bit more discussion, they get engaged.
(Sidenote: the subtitles spell Zarah’s surname differently in this scene and I find it very annoying!)
Zarah was clearly not trying to get laid when she walked into the experience room - she is wearing the ugliest brown suit I’ve ever seen, and she almost immediately began to talk about meditation.
Tumblr media
However, their shared memories of donut sex prove too hot to handle, and Zarah and Layton fuck against the door to an unnecessarily epic soundtrack.
As they get redressed, Zarah tells Layton that Sean Wise - who so clearly had a spy's name - was probably a spy. He got perks, like winning the baby lottery. She was going to have a baby with him. i.e. she recently stopped whatever birth control they use in Third. But Layton either doesn’t understand her implication, or is completely happy with the idea of having an unplanned child with his ex! Before they have time to discuss it further, Till interrupts them to pass judgement and be jealous of her new big brother: she’s never had sex in the Nightcar!
They head down to the clinic next, and meet Doctor Pelton. She tells them all about how she ended up working on Wilford’s Dreamliner while she prepares to do her first ever autopsy. She’s a bit quirky and sarcastic, but overall a lot more reasonable than Klimpt.
Layton stares longingly at Till’s pen the whole time Pelton is monologuing. When Pelton finishes, Layton teaches his new little sister how to be a homicide detective. They ask some questions, take some notes, and have a proper look at the body’s legs. At this point, Layton finally suggests that the missing limbs could have made their way to the butchers.
Somehow, despite Till and Pelton’s dark senses of humour and this show’s propensity for heavy foreshadowing, nobody refers to the cannibalised murder victim as Sean Beef. I would like to lodge a formal complaint.
Layton does a bit of dramatic storytelling about how one time, at band camp, everyone in the Tail ate a bit of raw cannibal heart. Even the writers don’t know what to say about that revelation, so instead we cut to the cattle car.
Layton and Till try to get the butcher to let them in, claiming “Brakemen’s business.” But the butcher knows his rights! He tells them to come back with the notary. Take note, kids: no warrant? No entry! Don’t let cops trick you into inviting them in.
Elsewhere, Melanie lives her best matrix fantasy by chipping open several cars full of drawers, as far as the eye can see. But before she has time to start fighting Klimpt and Jinju in slow motion, an avalanche hits and they have to brace.
Tumblr media
Melanie should have listened to her employee! There’s a huge avalanche, it slams the train, and the butcher and the cows all die. But that’s good news for Till and Layton: they get to play in the butcher’s freezer without a warrant! Layton finds a handy bit of wire, and Till discovers a ventilation shaft full of dismembered, frozen limbs. A fruitful trip to the freezer for everyone!
Boki waits for Melanie and Bennett to finish investigating the breached car, then pretty much just indirectly accuses them of lying about Mr. Wilford. Bennett and Melanie do not do the best job of hiding their initial reaction:
Tumblr media
But eventually they unconvincingly cover for why Melanie is wearing a breachsuit. Boki and Melanie argue about the speed of the train, and Melanie once again doesn’t give a fuck about health and safety: she gives him just half the speed reduction he needs to repair the damage. HR are still working through their complaints from last episode, so she'll get away with it for now.
Back in the Tail, it’s time for school! Since the middle school trigonometry teacher had to die to trigger a revolution, the pre-teens have rejoined the younger children this morning. Miles keeps answering the easy questions aimed at kids half his age. Lights is far more patient than I would be, and manages not to tell the little shit to shut the fuck up.
Meanwhile, Patterson (Winnie’s brother) has been allowed out of the Tail to procure some painkillers for his mother. In an unsurprising twist, we discover Osweiller deals drugs to the Tail, in exchange for oral sex. They finish up early to avoid getting caught, and only when he's zipping up his pants does Osweiller explain that he doesn’t really have painkillers - just Kronole. He is a truly disgusting human being. Patterson tells Osweiller that wasn’t the deal; he doesn't want to give Kronole to his Mom! As always, Osweiller’s a dick about it.
Back in the tail, Patterson dejectedly hands Josie the Kronole. For everyone’s sake, he doesn’t answer her question about how he got it. Josie gives Suzanne the drugs. Tail life continues to be incredibly bleak all round.
Uptrain, Jinju inexplicably has to explain to Bennett that the dead cows don’t just mean ‘no more beef’. There’s also no more milk, manure, methane... How does Ben not already know this?? He's supposed to be smart!
Next, Ruth makes yet another trip to the Tail. Have they considered erecting a permanent stage for her? It would save a lot of stool placement time. Ruth gives Winnie a menacing little wave, then announces the new apprentices who will get to move uptrain: two kids we’ve never met, and the boy they call Miles and Miles!
From there, we immediately cut to Till having a phone call with her dad boss. Layton gets her to hang up before she accidentally ends with, “I love you” and makes things awkward for them all. Laytona and Till have another little detective lesson, before a Jackboot deliberately bumps into Layton and calls him a Tailie. After their day of bonding, Till has decided that, actually, she likes her new big brother. She defends Layton’s honour by beating up the bully, even though he’s twice her size.
Tumblr media
When she lets him go, the Jackboot calls her a Tail fucker.
Do you hear that? It’s the sound of absolutely no one writing fanfiction. Seriously: what the fuck is that Jackboot talking about?
Layton and Till head home to tell their dad boss that they’re friends now. Till gives Layton a two second patdown, and he manages not to sound sarcastic when he says she’s good at it. The Brakemen shut Layton in the cell, then leave for the night.
As soon as they’ve gone, Layton takes Melanie's eternal advice and prepares to brace. Sqeamish readers/viewers may want to do the same. The train detective undoes his pants, winces, and a moment later his folded-up piece of wire lands in the sink, next to a pen.
If Layton did what they’re implying that he did… look. I'm not trying to judge the guy. But imagine if they had to pause a murder investigation and a brewing revolution just because Layton perforated his bowel trying to smuggle a scrap of wire in his ass! Most of the doors are controlled by chips anyway! Miss Audrey is gonna need to have a thorough chat with him one day soon about the importance of flared bases.
Thankfully, Layton seems fine for now. He makes a little map of the train and tries to hand it off to the sanitation crew on their way home. But they don't manage to pick it up. He tries to buy them time, by letting the Jackboots beat him to a pulp. Unfortunately, only the second part of of his plan is successful. He receives several strong kicks to the ribs and multiple potentially-fatal blows to the head.
Miles and Josie have a sweet but boring goodbye that I can't be bothered to write about, and then we cut back to Layton. Luckily, lethal injuries don't affect main characters on Snowpiercer! Layton's got a few cuts, but he's fully conscious. He's cuffed to a chair in the Brakemen's lockup, and his mom and dad Melanie and Roche are Very Disappointed in him. Melanie asks what he sees when he looks at the train, and Layton just copies his friend Old Ivan's answer: it’s a fortress to class. Melanie is suitably unimpressed. She snaps again, and starts shouting about how difficult it is to keep everyone alive.
Tumblr media
But Layton is too busy spitting blood from his mouth to sympathise, and when Melanie finishes her rant, he confronts her: he knows that Sean Beef was a spy, and that the real reason that Mr. Wilford needs a detective is to find out what secrets Sean spilled before he died.
Melanie has had enough of Layton's shit, and decides to take some inspiration from Lilah Folger for her next move: she tells Layton he'd already be dead if Mr. Wilford didn't need him alive to resolve this case.
Layton has just enough time before the credits roll to remind her that she's not his real mom.

I will not be that original for the #knd background character expension, because I am not that imaginative for background characters in the first place. I usually don’t care about them, because they’re in the background but ah what the hell, why not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s Numbuh Ten to Midnight from the comic Op: P.A.P.E.R.C.U.T.. We don’t know much about him, so I’ll start with his name : Jerome Milford, based on Jerome Tobacyk and Gary Milford, some dudes who wrote stuff about paranormal phenomenons. He looks rad with his black robe. I love this, okay? Black robes are awesome.
Tumblr media
He clearly changes his voice to sound more ominous or mysterious. He normally has braces so his voices is actually ‘nerdy’. Also, his official title is the ‘Master of the Mystically Mysterious’, but we don’t know which sector he is from. There’s a lot of groups that are not actual sectors: the full time 2x4 tech scientists, the decommissioning squad, the artic guards and trainers, the full time medics, the hair stylists, etc... so why not say he’s from a special force against paranormal stuff that would also include vampires, werewolves/dogs, ghosts, leprechauns and stuff? Because I decided it was the case and you can’t stop me low key want now a fic were he has to deal with Nigel for being an actual demon xD
Tumblr media
«Unscientific».... I bet Ten to Midnight would be the first to claim Father is a demon let me have this
A bunch of headcanon stuff:
He totally is a goth nerd
He listens to goth/metal bands like Evanescence or Within Temptation.
He shops at Hot Topic
He actually likes horror movies
When he’s confronted to actual monsters, he can get surprised and scared and losing his cool just like in the comic.
He takes everything to his work related seriously, even if people just want to make fun of him
He reads a lot
The dude has canonically bags under his eyes, undeniably proof he also stays up late all the time. Why? I don’t know, to get in the mood maybe?
Tumblr media
Little bonus because I thought this quite funny:

Falling is Complete!
Covering Seasons 4-7
In Milagro, we hear that "Agent Scully is already in love". So the question becomes, When did she fall in love? When was that "one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere". When did that moment occur for Dana Scully? This is that story.
Read it here

Tumblr media
Chapter35
The weekend’s journey had Scully twisting and turning like a Chubby Checker song. It sent her not only back through her life, but down each wrong choice road, like parallel dimensions heard through the chimes of fate. Dreams as soon as a year ago now were irrelevant and obscure. The path she chose led her here on this couch. Turning away all her past lives, opening herself up to the unimaginable, beyond science, beyond religion, to hear the call of a voice, the one she chose to follow, that chose to follow her right back.
She felt her body become weightless as he lifted her from the couch, with gentle strong arms, he pulled her close to his body, it’s warmth, igniting a glow within her. Her eyes fluttered open as he lowered her onto the bed. “Where are you going?” Scully asked sleepily.
“I’m sleeping on the couch,” he said, tucking the blanket back around her.
“You can stay,” then quickly added, “it’s your bed.”
“It’s okay Scully, get your rest,” he stated firmly, squeezing her hand. She held onto it, refusing to let it go as he started to walk away.
“Hold me?” she asked meekly.
Her vulnerability made him pause. “Yeah. yeah, I can do that.”
He walked around the bed and got in under the covers. She butted her back up against him as he wrapped his arms tightly around her.
“You heard, they’re doing a full financial audit of the FBI,” Scully said. “They’ll be looking  to make cuts.”
“If the powers that be have their way, the x-files will be on the chopping block,” Mulder concluded, rocking her gently, nuzzling her hair.
“Then what?” Scully persisted.
“We continue to search for the truth,” he replied.
Scully breathed out a chuckle, then took comfort in his embrace. Too much had been left unspoken. “Why does being closer feel like it’s taking us further apart?”
Mulder drew her in, closing the small gaps between them. “Maybe because we’re trying to hide in glass houses.”
She nodded and felt him squeeze her tighter. It was a comfort.
He whispered into the shell of her ear, “We’ve had a lot to make peace with Scully.”
Scully spoke in cautious tones. “What if you meet someone, what if you decide later that you want to have kids?”
She felt his body stiffen around her at the question. “You could do the same. There are other ways,” he answered tenderly. “If you want children, what’s stopping you?”
 “The consequences of my choices?”
Mulder sighed. “I’d like to think we’ve made peace with those..”
“And the X-files?” Scully persisted, rotating in his arms so she could look into his eyes.
“You’re asking me to make a choice?”
“No, I..” she stumbled.
“Scully,” he replied softly, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I choose you.”
Her walls melted inside his gaze. “Every choice I’ve ever made, has led me to this moment. You and I. Right here.”
“That leaves another choice to make.”
Scully passed him a wry grin. “I’ve made my choice.”
Scully closed her eyes knowing the next time they opened they would be staring into the only man she could ever imagine herself with. His lips pressed and slid against hers, warm and wet, with the grace of a trained dancer and the power of his 9 mm pistol. The removal of their clothing was clunky in their haste, forcing her to clutch his shoulder as a counterbalance. Gripping her tight, he steadied her feet. Scully’s cheeks heated when she was able to meet his eyes again. Not because of embarrassment, she would never feel that way in front of Mulder, but because of how real the moment was, the strength at its core -with honesty and purity- they would rebuild.
His eyes held that same gentle fire and connection they felt the first time they ever laughed in the rain. The soft warm glow of copper’s flame burning hazel through his irises. It’s embers igniting her heart and she knew it was time she spoke the truth aloud.
He was hers, and just as importantly, she was his. The words were on the tip of her tongue, dying to be spoken into existence. She wanted it roared into the night, well perhaps whispered in his ear, or murmured on his skin.
She chose to speak directly into his eyes.  “I’m in love with you, Fox Mulder.” Her words filled with the passionate intensity of countless gamma rays bursting through the universe. And it was all for one man. Inside her arms she felt the current of her words coarse through his body. “Scully,” he released in breathy affection, the words were with the same vulnerability as when he came to her when his father was shot. “I’m yours.”
The countless hours she had stared at his lips, the way they pursed at her challenges, or curled in disgust at her autopsies, the lower jutting out slightly when he rocked his mandible forward with passion. She knew every line of those lips and every curve the way she knew the shape of her own bathtub and stain in her coffee cup. She sucked the lower one into her mouth just to feel the desire exhaled from his lungs. His tongue reached for hers and she met it with fervor, intertwining with the strength of the divine threads of space and time.
Mulder covered her body as he rolled on top. She felt safe, much the way she did as he protected her years ago from the bullets in Milford Haven. Feet and wrist bound in the gymnasium showers he had braced to give his life for her at the end of a shotgun.
He smiled at her like he was reading her thoughts and she kissed him softly, his hand tangling in hers with the same motion as when he hugged her in an empty hospital hallway, giving her promise and support that she would carry on even with her cancer sentence. Mulder had resurrected her with a chip, the one buried at the base of her neck. She wasn’t a slave to it, instead one of the many symbols of his devotion. Those thoughts caused her hand to skim the scar of her consecration inside his shoulder.
Kissing and mingling with the others’ breath, her legs naturally wrapped around his torso. Skin to skin, mouth to mouth, but they were also connected in an entirely different way. They didn’t need to invade each other’s mind, they melded, their bodies flowing together, skin hot and sensitive to every touch. The passion, the need she felt, went beyond eternity. Their entire life together felt like foreplay- every time they shared a laugh, every time he cradled her in his warm embrace, or interlocked their fingers, or just stood in each other’s presence.
Grateful he didn’t prolong the sweet torture, he aligned himself and carefully pushed inside, heavy and thick, connecting on a level they had only known with the other. For long minutes, they kissed and reveled in their feelings, in the waves of sensations hitting them as he moved inside her.  It was a soft and reverent kind of sharing. The type of intimacy that at one time would have made her push away to preserve her independence.. Make her skin crawl. But it didn’t with him. Possibly because his response would have been to wait until she was ready. Instead, she relished the contact, something had changed inside of her, somewhat like Mulder’s prediction as they stared at a cocoon in a tree.
Not a weakness, but a strength, she felt safe when they were like this, like nothing could ever harm them. His darkness blanketing her with comfort. Their love born from shadows.
Scully’s insides hugged him tight and they released a groan of acknowledgement. He was intrinsically home. Their pace was slow, considerate. Mulder paused and kissed her gently, his right index stroking her forehead in reverence, reminiscent of when he spoke his condolences about her father or their first case after her abduction.
Their movements were fluid and quick, languid and vividly profound. Any pieces of walls left inside her, he had shattered, saving her, the same way he battered the window to save her from a psychotic man.
She chose the path with him not from fate or destiny, not out of desperation or visions, but out of friendship, out of respect, out of devotion. Love, unadulterated and complete.
His head fell to her neck and she felt every inch of him seeping pleasure into her core and out into the galaxy. He filled her as they burst together, points of light streaming, fusing and branding them, reaching out into the heavens, creating a miracle, a mosaic of the love she no longer gave with reservation, the emergence of existence.

Joseph Merrick - Part 2
Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man with severe deformities. He was first exhibited at a freak show as the "Elephant Man", and then went to live at the London Hospital after he met Frederick Treves, subsequently becoming well known in London society.
[Part 1]
~ LIFE AS A CURIOSITY ~
Merrick concluded that his only escape from the workhouse might be through the world of human novelty exhibitions. He knew of a Leicester music hall comedian and proprietor named Sam Torr. In 1884 Merrick wrote to Torr, who came and visited him at the workhouse. Torr decided he could make money exhibiting Merrick; although, to retain Merrick's novelty, he would have to be a travelling exhibit. To this end, he organised a group of managers for Merrick: music hall proprietor J. Ellis, travelling showman George Hitchcock, and fair owner Sam Roper. On 3 August 1884, Merrick departed the workhouse to start his new career.
The showmen named Merrick the Elephant Man, and advertised him as "Half-a-Man and Half-an-Elephant". They showed him around the East Midlands, including in Leicester and Nottingham, before moving him on to London for the winter season. George Hitchcock contacted an acquaintance, showman Tom Norman, who ran penny gaff shops in London's East End exhibiting human curiosities. Without a meeting, Norman agreed to take over Merrick's management and in November, Hitchcock travelled with Merrick to London.
When Tom Norman first saw Merrick, he was dismayed by the extent of his deformities, fearing his appearance might be too horrific to be a successful novelty. Nevertheless, he exhibited Merrick in the back of an empty shop on Whitechapel Road. Merrick had an iron bed with a curtain drawn around to afford him some privacy.
Tumblr media
[The shop on Whitechapel Road where Merrick was exhibited, in the 20th century. Wikipedia.]
Norman observed Merrick asleep one morning and learnt that he always slept sitting up, with his legs drawn up and his head resting on his knees. His enlarged head was too heavy to allow him to sleep lying down and, as Merrick put it, he would risk "waking with a broken neck". Norman decorated the shop with posters that had been created by Hitchcock, depicting a monstrous half-man, half-elephant. A pamphlet titled "The Autobiography of Joseph Carey Merrick" was created, outlining Merrick's life to date. This biography, whether written by Merrick or not, provided a generally accurate account of his life. It contained an incorrect date of birth but, throughout his life, Merrick was vague about when he was born.
Norman gathered an audience by standing outside the shop and drawing a crowd through his showman's patter. He would then lead his onlookers into the shop, explaining that the Elephant Man was "not here to frighten you but to enlighten you". Drawing aside the curtain, he allowed the onlookers—often visibly horrified—to observe Merrick up close, while describing the circumstances leading to his present condition, including his mother's alleged accident with an elephant. "Ladies and gentlemen ... I would like to introduce Mr Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. Before doing so I ask you please to prepare yourselves—Brace yourselves up to witness one who is probably the most remarkable human being ever to draw the breath of life." —Tom Norman.
The Elephant Man exhibit was moderately successful, and made money primarily from the sales of the autobiographical pamphlet. Merrick was able to put his share of the profits aside, hoping to earn enough to one day buy a home of his own. The shop on Whitechapel Road was directly across the road from the London Hospital, an excellent location, as medical students and doctors visited the shop, curious to see Merrick. One visitor was a young house surgeon named Reginald Tuckett. Like his colleagues, Tuckett was intrigued by the Elephant Man's deformities and told his senior colleague Frederick Treves.

Frederick Treves first met Merrick that November at a private viewing, before Norman opened the shop for the day. The viewing lasted no more than 15 minutes after which Treves returned to work. Later that day, he sent Tuckett back to the shop to ask if Merrick might be willing to come to the hospital for an examination. Norman and Merrick agreed. To enable him to travel the short distance without drawing undue attention, Merrick wore a costume consisting of an oversized black cloak and a brown cap with a hessian sack covering his face, and rode in a cab hired by Treves.
At the hospital, Treves examined Merrick, observing that he was "shy, confused, not a little frightened, and evidently much cowed". He measured Merrick's head circumference at the large size of 36 inches (91 cm), his right wrist at 12 inches (30 cm) and one of his fingers at 5 inches (13 cm) in circumference. He noted that his skin was covered in papillomata (warty growths), the largest of which exuded an unpleasant smell. The subcutaneous tissue appeared to be weakened and caused a loosening of the skin, which in some areas hung away from the body. There were bone deformities in the right arm, both legs, and, most conspicuously, in the large skull. Despite the corrective surgery to his mouth in 1882, Merrick's speech remained barely intelligible. His left arm and hand were not large and were not deformed. His penis and scrotum were normal. Apart from his deformities and the lameness in his hip, Treves concluded that Merrick appeared to be in good general health.
Norman later recalled that Merrick went to the hospital for examination "two or three" times and during one of their meetings, Treves gave Merrick his calling card. On one of the visits, Treves had photographs taken, and he provided Merrick with a set of copies which were later added to his autobiographical pamphlet. On 2 December, Treves presented Merrick at a meeting of the Pathological Society of London in Bloomsbury. Eventually, Merrick told Norman that he no longer wanted to be examined at the hospital. According to Norman, he said he was "stripped naked and felt like an animal in a cattle market".
During this time in Victorian Britain, tastes were changing in regard to freak show exhibitions like the Elephant Man. Shows like Norman's were a cause for public concern, both on the grounds of decency and due to the disruption caused by crowds gathering outside them. Not long after Merrick's last examination with Frederick Treves, the police closed down Norman's shop on Whitechapel Road, and Merrick's Leicester managers withdrew him from Norman's care. In 1885, Merrick went on the road with Sam Roper's travelling fair. He befriended two other performers, "Roper's Midgets"—Bertram Dooley and Harry Bramley—who on occasion defended Merrick from public harassment.
~ EUROPE ~
The dampening of public enthusiasm for freak shows and human oddities continued and the police and magistrates became increasingly vigilant in closing down shows. Merrick remained a horrifying spectacle for his viewers and Roper grew nervous about the negative attention the Elephant Man drew from local authorities. Merrick's group of managers decided he should go on tour in continental Europe, with the hope that authorities there would be more lenient. Merrick's management was assumed by an unknown man (possibly named Ferrari) and they left for the continent. The Elephant Man was no more successful there than in Britain, and similar action was taken by authorities to move him out of their jurisdictions. In Brussels, Merrick was deserted by this new manager, who stole Merrick's £50 (2018 equivalent £5,400) savings. Abandoned, Merrick made his way by train to Ostend, where he attempted to board a ferry for Dover but was refused passage. He travelled to Antwerp and was able to board a ship bound for Harwich in Essex. From there, he travelled by train to London and arrived at Liverpool Street station.
Merrick arrived at Liverpool Street Station on 24 June 1886, safely back in his own country, but with nowhere to go. He was not eligible to enter a workhouse in London for more than one night and would be accepted only by Leicester Union, where he was a permanent resident. Leicester was 98 miles (158 km) away. He approached strangers for help, but his speech was unintelligible and his appearance repugnant. He drew a crowd of curious onlookers until a policeman helped him into an empty waiting room, where he huddled in a corner, exhausted. Unable to make himself understood, his only identifying possession was Frederick Treves's card. The police contacted Treves, who went to the station. Recognising Merrick, Treves took him in a hansom cab to the London Hospital. Merrick was admitted for bronchitis, washed, fed and put to bed in a small isolation room in the hospital's attic.

Our kitchen cabinets are built by  local cabinet builders, and are designed and built to maximize your available space. Some of the features include solid ¾ plywood with maple veneer bases (instead of particle board, used by several stock cabinet manufactures), biscuit inserted hardwood shelf fronts, and biscuit joinery construction (instead of plastic corner bracing). Once the cabinet bases are built, the supplier we use for the drawer and door fronts has hundreds of styles and stains to choose from. We want to make sure our clients get what they want out of their kitchen renovations. Our goal when remodeling kitchens is our clients’ long-term happiness. Please note: Custom kitchen cabinets provide a more effective use of your space, giving you more cabinet space for your dollar...Along with a personalized, custom look! Whether you like the look of maple, cherry, or oak kitchen cabinets, or prefer a custom-color, laminate, or veneer, our locally-crafted cabinets provide high quality and exceptional value. Why would buying kitchen cabinet doors from a custom cabinetmaker be a better alternative to purchasing from a home center?Buying cabinet doors from a home center limits your kitchen remodeling project’s results due to the smaller selection of styles. Using a custom cabinet manufacturer gives you hundreds of cabinet door styles to choose from, and the option to create any design you dream of. You won’t have to compromise to find a door style that fits your decor. The cabinet doors can be made in any wood species, veneer, laminate, or Deco-form color.Your custom kitchen remodel will also use the available space more efficiently because the kitchen cabinet boxes will be custom made to fit instead of stock sizes used by almost all big home centers.  This means more space in many kitchens.WHY ARE CUSTOM KITCHEN CABINETS A BETTER DEAL THAN STOCK OR PREFAB CABINETRYStock cabinets and Prefab cabinets are manufactured using a limited set of dimensions and are meant to be used in many generic kitchen styles. The problem occurs when stock or pre-fab kitchen cabinets are installed: very often there is dead space.  The cabinet dimensions usually won’t fit your exact kitchen layout. Fillers are often used to cover up any areas where there is dead space.Kitchens often lose one square foot or more of available kitchen cabinet space because of dead space and fillers.Custom kitchen cabinetry provides the maximum use of your project’s cabinet space.LINCOLN HANDYMAN SERVICES  KITCHEN REMODELINGServing all of Lincoln for over 20 years.Licensed kitchen contractors serving Lincoln with these renovation services: • Kitchen Renovation • Kitchen Remodel • Kitchen Cabinets • Lincoln Kitchen Remodeling • Oak Kitchen Cabinets • Kitchen Remodeling In LincolnBEST KITCHEN RENOVATION SERVICE IN LINCOLN, NE!LINCOLN HANDYMAN SERVICES REQUEST MORE INFORMATION! What Are The Three Stages Of Braces?

Lynne Schmidt is the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, and mental health professional with a focus in trauma and healing. She is the winner of the 2020 New Women’s Voices Contest and author of the chapbooks, Dead Dog Poems (Finishing Line Press), Gravity (Nightingale and Sparrow Press) which was listed as one of the 17 Best Breakup Books to Read in 2020, and On Becoming a Role Model (Thirty West), which was featured on The Wardrobe’s Best Dressed for PTSD Awareness Week. Her work has received the Maine Nonfiction Award, Editor’s Choice Award, and was a 2018 and 2019 PNWA finalist for memoir and poetry respectively. In 2012 she started the project, AbortionChat, which aims to lessen the stigma around abortion. When given the choice, Lynne prefers the company of her three dogs and one cat to humans.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR Dead Dog Poems by Lynne Schmidt ****2020 NWV Winner**** NWVS #159
In Dead Dog Poems, Lynne Schmidt creates a new grief country and offers us a map to explore it. Here, the language and landscapes are intimate, unflinching, and unapologetic as she asks: how do we accept and process the loss of a pet who has remained more steadfast and loving than our humans have? Schmidt shows us we must find “grace to brace for the inevitable” and gratefully accept this new citizenship of loss. Her astounding collection shows us how to savor even the sorrow and finding the courage to love again even as you grieve: “I wish my puppy could talk to my depression/The way she talks to a trash can:” If Ellen Bass’s The Human Line and Mary Oliver’sDog Songs had a baby, Dead Dog Poems would be it. Anyone who has ever lost a beloved pet should read this book.”
–Joan Kwon Glass, Poet Laureate of Milford, Connecticut
“These poems are stark, beautiful, sad, and sometimes difficult, but ultimately very much worth it – just like the short lovely lives of the pets entrusted to us to care for.”
–Amber Sparks, author of And I Do Not Forgive You
Dead Dog Poems is unlike anything I’ve read before. Lynne Schmidt captures the experience of pet illness, loss, and grief in every single line. Her poem “Road Map” begins, “There is no road map / that suggests turn left at cancer / and right on chemotherapy street,” but somehow this collection is a road map, and a necessary one. I’m privileged to have read it, and I’m heartened that this guidebook to grief is out in the world.
–Shaindel Beers, author of Secure Your Own Mask, finalist for the Oregon Book Award
Anyone who has been saved by the companionship of their dog – or dogs – will see themselves in these pages. Through the lens of her relationship with her pack, Lynne Schmidt examines family, trauma, abuse, and loss, recognizing her love for her rescue dogs, survivors themselves, is a constant in an otherwise chaotic and cruel world. As she writes, “When the vet consoles me, saying, / She was sick before she was yours, / All I hear is / She was yours.” This collection is a reminder of what a gift it is to belong to each other, even briefly.
–Ruth Awad, author of Set to Music a Wildfire
“I read this book with both my youngest puppy and my oldest furry soulmate asleep on my lap. More than once they were woken by tears falling from my cheeks and landing on their tiny perfect heads. The poems in this collection speak to one of my life’s biggest fears, but do so in a way that roots me deeper in love, that wakes me further to the courage involved in choosing to become family with those whose lifespans are far shorter than our own. I know there is no such thing as learning how to grieve, but this book, for me, is a sacred road map to feeling everything. It unleashes both devastating and tender truths, and in doing so, sets us free to run towards the wilderness of our own growing hearts.”
–Andrea Gibson

Terminator 2 in 3D reminds us what we've still to learn about AI and robotics
by Michael Milford
Tumblr media
The classic science fiction action film Terminator 2: Judgment Day has ticked over its 25th anniversary. To celebrate, director James Cameron went one step further than remastering the original 1991 version and has re-released the film in 4K 3D, in cinemas now.
Tumblr media
Who let the killer cyborgs out again? StudioCanal
T2 tells the story of two cyborgs sent back in time from the future, one (the T800, “living tissue over metal endoskeleton”, in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most iconic role) to protect the future leader of the human resistance; the other (the T1000, a more advanced, shapeshifting liquid metal model) sent to terminate him.
In this 1995 timeline, the boy is a ten-year-old John Connor (Edward Furlong), protected by his mother Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), who has toughened up a lot since being the target of a failed time-travel assassination in the first Terminator film (a “pre-emptive” abortion since John was not yet born at that time).

But how plausible are the physics and science behind some of the film’s incredible scenes, and what light does modern artificial intelligence and robotics research shed on the film, 25 years on?
youtube
Arnie’s back, in 3D.
There will be spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the film already, go see it in cinemas this week - and then make sure that you’ll be back here to read on.
Shooting Terminators
When a near-indestructible cyborg is hellbent on killing you and you’re in the United States of America, there’s only one way to defend yourself: with guns. T2 is filled with amazing action scenes where these metal monsters go toe to toe with each other and the humans that get in their way.
Tumblr media
Shotguns, handguns, miniguns, grenade launchers… what will take down a Terminator? StudioCanal
Director James Cameron referred to Arnold’s T800 Terminator model as a sort of Panzer Tank, in contrast to the liquid metal T1000 being more like a sleek Porsche.
Like any military tank, Terminators would potentially be vulnerable to sheer momentum transfer knocking them off their feet, even if bullets weren’t able to damage their endoskeleton directly. This is very different to humans, to whom bullets often do most of their damage via energy transfer rather than momentum transfer.
The T800 first gets shot at the shopping mall by the T1000, who unloads a magazine of 9x19mm handgun ammunition into Arnie’s back. With a muzzle velocity of about 380m/s and a bullet weight of 7.45 grams, each bullet has a maximum momentum P of:
P = mass × velocity = mv
= 0.00745kg × 381m/s
= 2.838kgm/s
Assuming that all the momentum is transferred to the T800, it will change the momentum of the T800 by a certain amount: we can call this “Delta P” or “DP” for short. We can then work out what velocity each bullet would normally impart, which we’ll refer to as “Delta V”, or “DV” for short.
First we need a weight for the T800, which is never stated. But it can ride a motorcycle fine - so we can guesstimate a weight of 200kg:
DV = DP / m
= 2.838 / 200
= 0.01419m/s
= 0.05109km/hr
So each bullet would only impart a miniscule amount of velocity change to the T800 - so it being able to shrug them off effortlessly is entirely reasonable.
Verdict: plausible.
Later in the film, an entire police and SWAT team unloads on Arnold and he appears to get shaken around a bit more. Let’s repeat the calculation, for a team of ten shooters each emptying a 30-round AR-15 magazine firing 5.56x45 4gram bullets at a muzzle velocity of 975 m/s. We’ll do the calculation as if he gets hit by ten bullets at a time:
P = Number of bullets × mv
= 10 × 0.004kg × 975m/s
= 39 kgm/s
So:
DV = 39 / 200
= 0.195m/s
= 0.7km/hr
In terms of relative effect, that’s more than an order of magnitude more than the lone handgun, so the T800 being knocked around a bit by the combined fire is reasonable.
Verdict: plausible.
Tumblr media
Sarah Connor would suffer from the same momentum transfer issues as the T1000. StudioCanal
Sarah Connor manages to knock the T1000 back a sizeable amount with single shotgun blasts in the final showdown at the steel mill. We don’t need to perform any calculations to show this is implausible. For each shot Sarah Connor should feel the same momentum effects as the T1000 that is struck.
While she has the benefit of being braced for the shot, it’s still unlikely the T1000 would be knocked through the air an entire metre, unless it weighed much much less than a human. This also happens in the first T800 vs T1000 showdown, where single shots from Arnie’s shotgun throw the T1000 all over the place.
Verdict: implausible.
Tumblr media
StudioCanal
Code Cracking
Early in the film, a young John Connor is shown supporting himself by cracking ATM PIN codes using an early portable computer (an Atari Portfolio).
Tumblr media
Maxim Sokolenko/Michael Milford
He appears to use a brute force attack, trying all possible PIN combinations. Even on that early 1990s computer tech, the number of combinations required is quite small. Each digit has ten possibilities, and there are four digits:
Number of combinations = options per digitNumber of digits
= 104
= 10,000
The computer appears to zip through the possibilities quickly, so it’s plausible that all 10,000 combinations could be tried in a few seconds (assuming his hack was also stopping any “lock out” security mechanism which stopped you after a few incorrect tries).
Verdict: plausible.
A learning Terminator
One of the deleted scenes in Terminator 2 involved John and Sarah Connor deciding to reboot the T800’s Central Processing Unit (CPU) to enable it to learn and hence give them a fighting chance against the T1000.
Tumblr media
Arnold’s learning-enabled T800 adapts to circumstances. StudioCanal
This scene is highly relevant to the technological revolution that deep learning has caused over the past five years, where major advances in artificial intelligence have been made using large neural networks that learn about the world.
The ability of robots and AIs to learn from real world experience has been critical to many recent developments.
Verdict: highly plausible.
Wrong performance goals
The backstory to T2 is that a human-created artificial intelligence called Skynet starts learning at an amazing rate. Humans panic, try to shut it down, and it reacts by launching nukes at Russia, which in turn launches its own nukes back.
In the ensuing nuclear aftermath, Skynet builds an army of killer cyborgs and flying Hunter-Killer robots to enslave the remnants of humanity.
Tumblr media
Miles Dyson ponders what he might have done. StudioCanal
Setting appropriate boundaries for intelligent, autonomous systems is a part of Trusted Autonomous Systems research, which is a big focus of effort in today’s push towards increasingly autonomous defence systems.
It’s possible Skynet was reacting exactly as it should have, based on how it was set up, to defend against all attacks. Today’s military planners must be careful to fully understand the potential unintended consequences of all the performance goals they set for their high tech autonomous systems.
Verdict: highly plausible, designers must very carefully set objectives for AI systems.
Terrific or Terminal?
Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a classic sci-fi action film filled with action that often but not always pays heed to the laws of physics. Its re-release in 4K 3D takes what is already a visually impressive film and ramps it up another notch.
Read more: We’re close to banning nuclear weapons – killer robots must be next
But it is in T2’s addressing of key concepts that are incredibly important today - artificial intelligence, the importance of learning, the ability of a machine to learn the value of human life and the danger of unintended technological consequences, that it particularly shines.
Tumblr media
While it will always be a part of film history, its legacy is perhaps increasingly becoming its use as a focal point for
almost all discussion about robotics
, artificial intelligence and their role in humanity’s future. And for that, it gets an A+ for scientific importance.
Tumblr media
Today’s ten year-olds face an uncertain future… hopefully one not as bleak as John Connor. StudioCanal

Now back in my favorite town in New Zealand, this time bracing myself for the unprecedented 12 days of continuous travel time with the parents 23. Queenstown, New Zealand I did wish to return here once more even if it wasn't for the Milford Trek. On the day when online booking for the great walks season opened, I asked my dad if he is interested in joining me on hiking. Apparently, as it turned out later, he wasn't that enthusiastic about it because of his weakened knee, perhaps he only did so because mom also wanted to tag along. That's how it began this time. Damn my indecisiveness... #queenstown #southisland #newzealand🇳🇿 #lakeview (at Lake Wakatipu) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt2nXDclbMd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3bbloikop1x7
