What is an L-shaped Kitchen Layout? http://bit.ly/2ERFzR7
The L-shaped layout is the most popular kitchen configuration, according to the NKBA 2019 kitchen design trends. But what is an L-shaped kitchen layout? We asked a few top experts to explain this layout and provide advice for using it. After all, just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s the right configuration for you.
L-shaped configurations are immensely popular. Image: Svet-Feo/Shutterstock
L-shaped kitchen layout options
“The L-shaped design consists of two adjoining, perpendicular walls of cabinets that form a formidable ‘L’ shape,” explains David Shove-Brown, Partner at Washington, D.C.-based boutique design firm //3877. He says its popularity is due to the layout’s adaptability.
“Typically, one side is dedicated to smaller kitchen tasks and acts as home base for the sink and countertop appliances,” Shove-Brown says. “The other ‘wing’ is oriented for larger, more time-intensive activities, holding the range and refrigerator and offering additional storage.”
An L-shaped configuration can also include an island. Image courtesy of Joan Kaufman/Interior Planning & Design.
An L-shaped kitchen layout can also take another form. “There can be one wall with a cooktop and another with the sink,” explains Joan Kaufman, Interior Designer and President of Interior Planning & Design in Naperville, IL. But in this design, the refrigerator may not be in the L. “Often an island is in the center of this style kitchen.” An example of an L-shaped kitchen designed by Kaufman is above.
While the kitchen work triangle is efficient, she says that planning for the island is essential to ensuring that the space is efficient. “Determining if an ‘L’ is right for a homeowner will be largely influenced by the floor plan and space availability.”
A window will affect your layout. Image courtesy of Showcase Kitchens.
Incorporating a window
Michael Radovic, CKD at Showcase Kitchens, admits that he loves L-shaped kitchens because they are efficient and look great. “Being on Long Island, where there are mostly graciously-sized private homes, we typically add a center island, but the perimeter is where all the action is.” Radovic says that it’s preferable to put the sink — and trendy faucet — in front of a window, as his company did in the design above.
And that window can provide an awesome view. “The leg of the L is often along an outer wall and you can create a big picture window to an amazing landscape,” says George Bevan, Architect and Founder of Bevan + Associates in Sonoma, CA. “This allows for natural light and complete views of the outdoors.”
However, if you want a window behind the sink, understand how this will change the configuration. “It will be an influencing factor in the placement of cabinetry and appliances in your kitchen,” Kaufman explains.
This style fits well in an open concept design. Image: hikesterson/Getty Images
Open concept design
Open concept kitchens remain popular. “The L-shaped kitchen layout provides an easy option for creating a seamless flow between the kitchen and adjacent living spaces,” Shove-Brown explains. It does this by keeping kitchen essentials limited to two exterior walls. “Movement throughout the space is more fluid with this floor plan.”
A kitchen work triangle provides efficiency. Image courtesy of Case Design/Remodeling.
The work triangle can handle two cooks
Chelsea Allard, VP of Design at Case Design/Remodeling in Charlotte, NC, also likes an L-shaped kitchen. “They are common because they can create a nice work triangle between the refrigerator, sink and cooking surface,” she says. “Now more than ever, we’re seeing L-shaped kitchens paired with islands to create separate zones for multiple cooks.” Above is an L-shaped kitchen designed by Allard’s company.
Shawn Breyer, Owner of We Buy Houses Atlanta, agrees that most homeowners and designers enjoy the open layout of this floor plan. “It spreads out the functional work areas to make a kitchen feel less cramped.”
There’s plenty of floor space. Image: FluxFactory/Getty Images
It’s great for small spaces
“These kitchen layouts work well in lofts with industrial kitchens and open concept floor plans where the dining room or breakfast nook is incorporated into the space,” according to Ariel Richardson, the San Diego-based Interior Designer and Founder of ASR Design Studio. “It’s great for small- to medium-sized spaces where you want the kitchen to feel like it’s part of a larger space, such as a dining room and living room.”
An L-shaped kitchen can also be intimate. Image: jujuenter/Getty Images
Shove-Brown says he’s seeing a lot of townhouses and apartment buildings incorporate the L-shaped kitchen concept. “This layout is also great for condos. The challenge is figuring out what people want to see and what people don’t want to see in their space,” he explains. For example, Shove-Brown says that while L-shaped kitchens keep cleanup and cooking areas separate, everything is viewable to the adjacent living spaces. “If you’re comfortable with an uninterrupted flow between each, then an L-shaped kitchen is a great fit.”
Dead zones can waste space. Image: Jimkruger/Getty Images
Potential problems
However, there are some downsides that homeowners should plan to address. “In spaces small and large, be aware of the ‘dead zones’ that can emerge from this layout,” Shove-Brown warns. “In many instances, the corner space isn’t utilized properly.” He says the area is not quite equipped for active use, but also not quite right for storage. If possible, Shove-Brown recommends limiting the size of this zone.
Don’t place work areas too far away. Image: BenAkika/Getty Images
And if you don’t add an island, Breyer notes another issue. “The problem with the L-shaped kitchen comes when the functional areas are too spread out, making the workspace inefficient.” He says an island — even one on casters that can be moved — can shorten the distances between work areas.
Appliances can also be too close. Image: dit26978/Getty Images
However, sometimes there’s not enough distance. “In small L-shaped kitchens, the appliances can be too close together to provide any effective prep space,” Allard explains. She points to restored ranch homes that didn’t have an original dishwasher or microwave as an example. “In those cases, lengthening one side and adding an island can help to stretch out the zones, making them more appropriate for the way we move today.”
L-shaped kitchens can be more expensive than galley configurations. Image: Artazum/Shutterstock
Nathan Outlaw, President at Onvico, a general contracting and design-build company in Thomasville, GA, points out two additional cons. “Compared to a galley kitchen, an L-shaped kitchen is more expensive, due to the extra complexity with cabinets and countertops and possibility of an island.”
And while some families love open concept styles for maximizing social interactions, that can also be a drawback. “Sometimes an L-shaped kitchen can be too inviting, making it harder for the cook to ‘kick’ someone out,” Onvico says.

John C. “Jack” Portman, III
It is with great sadness, that we share with you, that Chairman & CEO, Jack Portman passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020.
John Calvin “Jack” Portman III, visionary architect, devoted father, doting grandfather, impassioned artist and trailblazing businessman, passed away of natural causes at the age of 71 on Friday, August 28 at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. Son of famed Atlanta architect John Calvin Portman Jr. and Jan Portman, Jack was born November 3, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jack graduated from The Lovett School in Atlanta, then earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He began practicing architecture in 1973 at John Portman & Associates, rising from an Apprentice Architect to become Chairman of the firm, now known as Portman Architects.
Jack took over leadership of Portman Architects following the death of his father, John C. Portman Jr., in 2017. While exceedingly successful as a real estate developer, Jack was passionate about being an architect, particularly the creation of meaningful architecture with a focus on culturally sensitive design.

He once said, “The challenge of the architect is to do something that seems to belong where it is situated.” Throughout his nearly 50-year career with the Portman Companies, Jack pioneered their international expansion, helping to transform the enterprises into the globe-spanning real estate design and development firms that they are today.
Jack was a proud father to his five children. In addition to his five children, Jack is survived by his mother, Joan “Jan” Portman; his four siblings; five grandchildren; and countless more relatives and cherished friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his younger brother Jae Portman and his father, John Calvin Portman Jr.
The family is holding a small private memorial service and, in lieu of flowers, suggests that memorial contributions be made to Art Papers, the Andrew J. Young Foundation or another charity of your choice.

Portman Architects News
New Name Reflects Latest Evolution For The Sixty-Six-Year-Old Firm
At a recent gala, Jack Portman, FAIA, announced that world-renowned architectural design firm, John Portman & Associates, is transitioning to a new name – Portman Architects. Jack, the firm’s Chairman, President and CEO, stressed that this change was just the latest evolution in the architecture firm’s long history as an innovative design practice.
“Evolution has been a salient factor in our firm’s longevity,” Jack explained. “Our firm founder, John C. Portman, my father, wanted this firm to be everlasting. He began planning and putting our current leadership team in place in anticipation of the succession he recognized was coming.
In 2010, the firm established the current leadership team comprised of Principals Lell Barnes, Gordon Beckman, Greg Botsch, Rob Halverson, Norris Hunt, Walt Jackson, Pierluca Maffey, Walt Miller, John Nipaver and Jack Portman. This leadership team continues in 2019 to grow the firm by attracting new architectural design talent and working with developers to create unique typologies and memorable experiences, as evidenced by the newly opened CODA at Tech Square in Midtown Atlanta.
Portman Architects carries on the legacy of John Portman in ways that are visible to the public in innovative and engaging buildings; important to the profession in the collaborative process that includes the mentorship of young talent; and vital to clients in the focus on making a valuable contribution to both the project’s bottom line and the community. The Principals are leading a host of ongoing projects in a half of dozen U.S. cities including Atlanta, Charlotte and Seattle, as well as work throughout China and Asia.
In addition to the new name, the firm has a new web address, portmanarchitects.com, and employee email addresses also reflect this change. While there have been some notable changes, Jack Portman stressed that much continues as it always has. “We’ve always been Portman. We are Portman. We’ve always been Architects. We are Architects – ones who remain hyper-focused on being the best. Our thirst for excellence remains unquenchable. With a vision toward the future, we’re very excited to see where our passion leads us next.”
Architecture focused on serving people transcends national borders by striving for universal human appeal. Human beings are creatures of nature, perceiving their environment through the senses. Recognizing human values and the innate response to space, nature and light, the firm weaves sensory experiences into the built environment to create places that are more beneficial to people and designed for life – livable, stimulating and sustainable.
The firm was known as Edwards and Portman through the late 50s and most of the 60s when John Portman partnered with a former professor of his from Georgia Tech. It became John Portman & Associates after Mr. Edwards retired in 1968. The firm further evolved in the late 1970s when domestic work slowed due to changing tax laws and other economic factors, and the decision was made to venture abroad.
Jack took an exploratory trip to East Asia and the Pacific Rim before moving his family to Hong Kong. This effort led to several opportunities in Asia, with the firm becoming pioneers for Western firms operating in China. Success in China led to work in India and beyond, where the firm’s design principals continue to prove their progressive design talents.
Portman Architects is an internationally-recognized architectural design firm with offices in Shanghai and Atlanta. Strategic services span from the initial concept to planning, design and ultimately realizing this vision in master plans and built boutique project scales. The firm is renowned for inventive, responsive design solutions that enhance the world and people’s lives. For more information, please visit https://ift.tt/3k1CG26.

Things to do in Roswell, Georgia I had operated at an office as soon as a week for ten years, and never ventured out throughout the day. Then I review a write-up concerning the very best thrift shops in Atlanta, as well as found one was right down the street-- that began my weekly strolls outside the workplace to the second hand shop where I found lots of designer acquisitions for simply a few bucks. I felt the same way regarding Roswell, Georgia, concerning thirty minutes north of Atlanta. I made the expedition up GA Highway 400 for many years, as my papa lived there until he passed away 2 years back. However we never ventured outside his home to explore this historic city of 88,000. I just recently spent a little bit of time there and got an outstanding facial and also mani-pedi, drank a tea at an adorable cafe, boutique-hopped on Canton Street, and also saw Santa Stipulation getting his hair done. Right here's a things to do in Roswell, Georgia, whether you're choosing a day or a weekend. Get Pampered I hardly ever make the moment for a manicure or pedicure, however I was reminded that the outcomes include greater than simply pretty nails. It is just one of the best anxiety relievers I recognize. I really felt comfortable right away when I strolled into Jolie Beauty parlor & Nails and also promptly saw the absence of that overpowering nail salon smell. That's due to the fact that the beauty parlor is 98% chemical free. I spent a relaxing early morning there and entrusted charming nails. And also a recognizable reduction in anxiety. And the prices defeated anything near to me in Buckhead. For instance, specials this month consist of a 90-minute stone massage therapy for simply $95. A day plan includes a one-hour massage therapy, 1- hr face as well as mani-pedi for simply $150. I've avoided facials as they normally made my face break out, yet I chose one at the charming Plum Tree Salon & Spa, situated in a previous residence on Canton Road, the primary street of Roswell. Opened in 1999 by Barbara Sangenito and also Cindy Lowden, these women and also all the other stylists make you really feel right in your home. The day spa area of the lively beauty salon is embeded the back edge in a quiet place, where I had the best face of my life. And Plum Tree is additionally where Santa obtains his hair done, and also where I discovered that being a Santa is a high-maintenance, year-round venture. Contrary to popular belief, Santa is not lounging on a coastline all summer appreciating time off. No, Santa Doug is making appearances at parties and area occasions, as well as for that his blooming white locks as well as beard need to be in photo-worthy form. Shop on Canton Street Canton Street is lined with welcoming shops as well as restaurants, and I discovered several unique present products I couldn't withstand. All these stores are conveniently walkable from each various other, and also staffed by friendly clerks. Attempt Luck and also Southern Design for enjoyable gift items. Southern Design additionally has clothing and also home decor. The prominent boutiques The Bilt-House as well as Perky Shops also have areas right here. Head a little bit additional up the road to Raiford Gallery, a big two-story light-filled gallery with art from 400 artists in the United States and also Canada. We were fortunate adequate to be revealed around by the proprietor, the exceptionally enjoyable Judy Raiford, who is likewise a talented jeweler. (A Judyism: "I got involved in jewelry because it's tough to make a living with medicines and rock and roll.") She took us downstairs to her studio where I was fascinated by the huge range of treasures as well as metals, and chuckled at her hammer collection, classified "Hammer Pornography." Eat at one of the 200 independent dining establishments Fail to remember the idea that chains policy outside large-city limits. It's all about the independent restaurateur in Roswell. We chose lunch at Salt Manufacturing facility Bar, which includes things like Thai beef lettuce covers, Guard's pie, and also veal as well as mushroom meatloaf, along with pizzas and also hamburgers. At dinner, I indulged in an abundant, decadent recipe of shrimp and also grits at Peachtree Restaurant. For Cajun cuisine and scrumptious beignets, try Adele's on Canton, appropriate beside Raiford Gallery, where New Orleans-born Chef Marc makes sure the credibility of the food. The newly opened Crazy Love Coffee House deserves a quit for a mug of coffee and to take pleasure in the style of the previous cottage transformed coffee home. Excursion Historical Sites Beginning your browse through to Roswell at the Roswell Visitors Center to discover the background of the location along with its contemporary tourist attractions. Roswell was a cotton mill town, and also on the financial institutions of Vickery Creek you can see the damages of Roswell Manufacturing Firm, shed throughout the Civil War. As you might have heard, very little of Atlanta made it through the Civil Battle. For your antebellum house solution, Roswell is the location to go. A trilogy of lovely residences is open for tours. The owners of Roswell, Roswell King and his boy Barrington, established Roswell and developed Barrington Hall. Bulloch Hall was built in 1839 by Significant James Bulloch, one of Roswell's initial settlers. His little girl wed Theodore Roosevelt Sr. in the home as well as their boy was Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. Smith Vineyard was built by servants in 1845 and also three generations of the household lived right here. Idea: Excursion all 3 residences with a Trilogy Pass for $18. Fire the Booze While I had not formerly spent much time in Roswell, I had actually visited Azalea Park on the Chatthoochee, a preferred location for us to introduce our kayaks. The water streams so gradually on the weekends, it's a breeze to paddle upstream then switch over directions for our return. On one recent browse through, we saw individuals floating on nearly every item possible including massive blow-up mattresses, some sunburnt and also weary, moving themselves ahead with the slow-moving current while huge groups of roped-together inner tubers partied to the soundtrack of their portable songs. There are a few outfitters where you can rent out kayaks and canoes. Or simply take a barbecue and also kick back in the park. Attend Alive in Roswell and also Other Celebrations Alive in Roswell is a regular monthly family-friendly celebration hung on the third Thursday of the month from 5-9 from April with October. The event gets on Canton Street and the Historic Roswell Square, and also includes food vehicles, video games, vendors as well as home entertainment. VISITER UN CAMPUS AMÉRICAIN – youMAKEfashion
youtube
Gryphon tea room 337 Bull St, Savannah, GA 31401
Soho cafe 12 W Liberty St, Savannah, GA 31401
On y retourne quand ??
The Collins Quarter 151 Bull St, Savannah, GA 31401
Vous m’aviez énormément conseillé The grey.
The grey 109 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401
Garibaldi 315 W Congress St, Savannah, GA 31401
Centre équestre
Espace détente pour les étudiants et piscine
