I think it's neat that Jefferson's Reserve makes a bourbon where the barrels are loaded onto a ship which travels the ocean and is supposed to affect the flavor of the whiskey.
I'm gonna make a whiskey called "Peashooters Reserve" where each barrel is loaded into an early to mid 2000's model Honda Civic and driven around North Jersey.

Except for a few white knuckle moments on our stormy drive home, Saturday’s adventure ended with Ethereal Brewing located in the old James E. Pepper Distillery where I had one beer. Weather was predicted.
The atmosphere here is one of my favorites and the beer is always interesting with old ales, barrel aged beers, and European styles on offer. I especially appreciated the Progress Pride flag.
On the drive down we stopped at DQ for biscuits and gravy. A black woman was the only person working front of house. I thought she was early thirties, for sure she was a pro at this. On the side opposite where we sat was a group of old white men, several sporting MAGA hats.
I watched her carry food over to the mildly boisterous group a few times. The interaction seemed familiar and friendly. “Must be regulars I mentioned to D.”
As we got up to leave, I suggested I’d shout “Go Kamala!” As we passed them.
“Better not.” D replied. (I didn’t)
Sitting at the bar, I recalled a post, I’d read before leaving that morning, by Penzy’s Spices called “About Republicans”. A declaration right on their website and at a cost.
We’d got up early to go stand in line at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort to hopefully get a couple of bottles of Blantons bourbon. It’s one of my favorites and I especially like to give it as gifts. It’s allocated, meaning retail liquor stores get very little of it so they put it behind the counter and mark it up at huge margins. It retails for $69.99 but I mostly see it for $110-$180 locally, when I see it at all.
People travel from far and wide to visit Buffalo Trace and the many other distilleries in this part of Kentucky. It’s become a tourist destination for those who make drinking bourbon a hobby. According to the man controlling the front of the line, last year they had visitors from all 50 states and 32 countries.
When we arrived at the parking lot, staff members with Hi-Vis vests on, directed us to park. We were about 30mins before they opened but there was already 3 and a half snakes. Yes - snakes. There is a FB site devoted to tracking the bourbon availability there each day as well as how many people are lining up, with a line being a snake. It’s all very organized. Long lines painted on the asphalt define how to que up like at the airport. Unlike the airport, there’s no sense of desperation so no physical barriers are needed. There were dogs and kids in line. The people in front of us were from North Carolina and they had one of each.
What I realized, sitting at the bar was, there weren’t any black people in that line at Buffalo Trace. Ahem, none I noticed. There also weren’t any black people at our next stop, West Sixth Brewing either. There were a few black people at our next stop, the large art fair held in the park. A few exhibitors and a few walking about like us. <sigh> This is far from the first time I’ve noticed the places I choose to spend my time and money are mostly all white affairs.
What’s my point? Let’s elect a black woman to president. Let it be a step towards outlasting the racist homophobic anti other segment of our society. Let them die in fear as they’ve chosen to live. Let’s stand in lines of color.

September 21
Last day in Lexington and making the most of it. Traveling north out of Lexington to The Ark Encounter. Very powerful message of God’s hand upon mankind. We asked ourselves “how can one not believe?”. Spent most of the morning here taking in God’s word. 🙏🏻❤️ Left here and headed through another part of the countryside brimming with old barns, homes, canopies of trees starting to change color and narrow winding roads. Just beautiful! Our destination is Woodford Reserve Distillery. This distillery was founded in the late 1800’s, survived through prohibition and is now the largest distillery and distribution in the world. The grounds were beautiful and the bourbon tasting and history was fascinating. The two red barrels are the bourbon that will served at the 2024 Kentucky Derby 150th celebration. We enjoyed the Double Oaked bourbon that was very smooth and delicious paired with chocolate! Our day was complete with a final drive through the countryside and saying goodbye to the Thoroughbred horses.

These miniature bottles replicate the iconic RD1 750-ml bottles, complete with the distinctive four-plank horse farm fencing etched around the base and vibrant labels denoting the wood finishes. The best whiskey bars in THE WORLD. lol reeeeeally?
Just my two cents…
I spend too much time in bars and in some bars, any time at all is too much. For me, two of the bars mentioned on this list have no appeal at all. They are:
Proof on Main, the bar at the swanky 21c Hotel downtown, is nice for a hotel bar, but if you want to deviate from their current drink list or ask a bartender a question about whiskey anything… don’t, they are busy. They couldn’t make me a Vieux Carré and instead were pushing whatever their manager wanted them to. Of course that’s just been my experience. Around the corner though is Meta, and they have some of the best bartenders in Louisville with a much larger selection of booze.
Tartan House
I try many new bars each year. Usually I give them a few months to catch their stride before going in. Not sure why I waited so long to go to Tartan House because I was excited at the idea of a Scotch bar. Yeah No. A meager list of 30 usual suspects and I had to ask for the list. When the bartender warned the prices were by the ounce, I was shocked/disgusted. I nearly left but noticed they had a Penicillin on their drink list. I watched him make the $14 drink and when it was time to float the .5oz of peated Scotch, to my horror, instead he picked up a perfume style mister and sprayed the glass from a foot away. The tiny drink was gone in a minute then so was I.
Neat is a nice place with some interesting atmosphere, located on Louisville’s party corridor known as The Highlands. While they do have an impressive amount of vintage bourbon on hand to purchase, it’s an arm and a leg job, as my Welsh friend Marguerite used to say. Stick to their creative drink list or order a traditional drink and you’ll likely enjoy it. If you want to drink the old stuff you’ll need old money.
North of Bourbon is a newish joint in a building that too often seems to have a new joint opening in it. It’s in my favorite neighborhood, Germantown, and it’s quite nice inside. Some of the booths look like giant bourbon barrels, kitschy but cozy. I found a very well stocked bar there with plenty of new releases and barrel picks to try and the bartender was great.
The best my fav place on the list is The Pearl. It’s also in Germantown and is owned by some of the best whiskey people in town. They typically have the most talented bartenders and a great selection of booze, including bourbon. Prices are reasonable and yeah, it’s one of my constant recommends.

San Diego, California (June 5, 2023) — Modern Times Beer is celebrating 10 years of boundary-pushing craft beer. To commemorate the milestone, Modern Times invites you to the Decade of Decadence 10th Anniversary Extravaganza on Saturday, July 15 in Point Loma.
Decade of Decadence will feature a carefully curated beer list, with variations on familiar favorites and barrel-aged masterpieces. Headlining the beer list are MT10 Hazy Double IPA, juicy, easy-drinking DIPA brewed with experimental and revolutionary hops, and Decahex: 10th Anniversary Barrel-Aged Stout, aged in 10-Year Bourbon barrels.
“I remember hearing about the opening of Modern Times, now 10 years later we’re excited to celebrate the history while toasting to the new future ahead,” said Garrett Marrero, co-founder and CEO of Craft ‘Ohana/Modern Times. “July 15th is going to be an epic day for our fans and teammates! We will be serving up some new takes on our classics as well as some new experimental beers. Thanks to all who have been a part of our Decade of Decadence and we hope to see you there!”
The anniversary party will be held at The Fortress of Raditude (3612 Kurtz Street) in Point Loma. Food truck vendors include Taco Love, Krispy Boyz Chicken Sandwiches, and Loompia Ladies with tunes by DJ D-Skwiz, SD Pop-Up Mini Golf, and more! Tickets are available online for $50, with discounted tickets for designated drivers.
