VERY pleased to tell you that the princess luz AU was not even the first longfic i ever wrote about a main character raised by an evil empire, defecting from that empire, and planning to tear it apart from the inside out. or about the main character being in a platonic polyamorous marriage with a man doomed by the narrative and a woman who's a soldier wrapped up in both of them purely because they're kind. or about the main character going behind their platonic husband's back to do atrocities for the empire in a desperate bid to save his life, only for everything to ultimately end up pointless because the empire has no mercy. or for the main character to slaughter the evil emperor/empress at The Very Last Second to save both of their partners.

there's a lot about bota i'd write differently today -- it's got some of my optimistic 19-year-old it's-2015-and-i-still-believe-in-the-power-of-pacifism american liberalism, plus unthinking replication of some of the -isms in the source material -- but like. it's basically princess luz AU if luz had been a runaway slave formerly in a romantic relationship with belos, and she and hunter and amity had all been on the run together. and yes it is just as horrifying as that summary makes it sound. rjejdbrb.

Monday is my birthday and as a treat for me I asked my friends to let me run a game of the TTRPG I’ve been writing for the past year for them

and now i’m realising, as i prepare for it over the weekend, that i got myself homework for my birthday 🙃

CHICANO ART MOVEMENT visits: Raul Baltazar 2024

The street team crew headed over to Chapman University’s Guggenheim Gallery to catch the last days of Raul Baltazar's “Welcome to the Bunny House.” This collection of paintings by Los Angeles-based artists were created between 2020 and 2024.

 The exhibition title is in relation to Baltazar’s former abode located in Echo Park which was “a sanctuary where art, spirit and levity converged, inviting participants to contemplate the transformative potential inherent in embracing indigenous roots and finding solace through creative expression” that influenced “Baltazar’s distinctive painting style and affirming his paintings as extension of his social practice.”

 After crossing the entrance, Baltazar’s art captured Anita’s attention and enveloped her in the abstract expressionism style. Each work was created with details and filled with movement.

 And Baltazar placed various elements of the leporidae animal family in specific locations within the Guggenheim Gallery walls.

 This is the portrait that I contemplated on the most. As a mixed piece, it broke the dimensional plane via its large, fuzzy nose and exaggerated whiskers which were outlandish and intriguing. The exhibition dates for this show were from January 31, 2024 to March 15, 2024 at the Guggenheim Gallery on the Chapman University campus in Orange, California.

This problem is part of why I gave “sorcerer” new precise definitions in my RPG:

1. One who uses sorcery, the practice of sacrificing human life to generate divine power

2. (informal) Fool who meddles in the business of otherworldly spirits, either ineptly or for their own gain

Both “warlock” and “wizard” mean different things to their D&D counterparts too.

Warlock:

1. someone who communicates with dragons and demonic spirits

2. an outcast or heretic (literally “oathbreaker”), specifically from a Saint-worshipping culture

Wizard:

1. A respected scholar

2. Someone who is trusted on the behalf of a community to communicate with otherworldly spirits

Notice how “sorcerer” and “wizard” have opposite meanings that essentially come down to how much people trust you to communicate with nonhumans. If you fuck up your job, people might voice their displeasure by calling you a sorcerer rather than their wizard.

People who treat D&D's classes as like being in any way representative of fiction outside of D&D are my nemesis, I just saw a post that was like "remember the difference between a Sorcerer a Warlock and a Wizard is this" and treating like those words as if their very D&D specific meanings were like universally accepted I'm going to start taking hostages

Curious minds are wondering if they can read bota without having read much of homestuck...

i'm giggling. i THINK that you can, because it's nearly original fiction -- it's set THOUSANDS of years before the homestuck canon and concerns characters who only exist in a few pages of exposition. however understanding of the time loops and timeline dynamics IS easier with a homestuck background.... but those things were integral enough to the plotting that they're also explained thru exposition early on.

the plot is about a chronically ill telekinetic little freak of a man psychically discovering that his traitor-to-the-state moirail (platonic soulmate) is going to be burnt at the stake. and his attempts to stop it by splitting off from the canon homestuck timeline. and the question of whether those attempts to stop it will just hasten the moirail's demise instead. and the HORRIBLE fights that he and his moirail and their shared wife all get into along the way.
