౨ৎ How to romanticize this school year 🎀

I know school might be tiring , boring , or even scary , so here are some ways to romanticize this school year , next school year , and all the future school years to come

౨ৎ Stretch in the morning and drink water , usually when we wake up for school most of us don’t wanna get out of our bed and are extremely tired or drained out due to either waking up early or not getting enough sleep from last night 🎀 , so it is very important to stretch doing some poses you already know or watch videos on YouTube that are abt 5 - 10 mins depending on how much time u have , drinking water is also good for your skin and fastens your metabolism it will also hydrate you in the morning which can lessen how tired you were when you woke up . 🧚🏽‍♀️

౨ৎ sleep early , I know this might be very hard for some people because of the amount of things that they have to do , but you can limit the amount of time u take to do those things and take naps or sleep around 8 - 10 MAX , sleeping around these times are more healthy than sleeping around 12 pm or 3 am in the morning , your body needs the most rest it can get to keep it going 🎀

౨ৎ Please be yourself in school , many people tend to want to fit in and change themselves bc of what other people think , what their friend group says , or even how the internet influenced them to behave , you don’t have to change your behavior / personality just to fit in a group / area , real friends / loved ones will love you the way you are 💗🎀 .

౨ৎ Don’t disrespect teachers for no reason at all please 😭😭 , many teachers don’t get paid enough for dealing with kids all day long , make sure you’re being respectful to them and being nice / positive , one way you can do that is by simply greeting them good morning everyday or saying bye to them everyday .

౨ৎ PLEASE try on your grade , obsessing over your grade isn’t good either you don’t have to be sad / mad at yourself bc you didn’t get a 100% remember that everyone isn’t perfect , although you should try and bump your grades or try to be better at the subject you’re struggling with , when teachers notice you try your best in class they most likely bump your grade or try to give u extra credit even if you got a low grade . 🎀

౨ৎ Don’t start drama for no reason , trust me it’s not worth it ; you can get in trouble and that can be draining always try and be positive if someone else is being negative , rude , or annoying ; ignore them or don’t talk to them ; don’t try to engage with bad conversations with them to also get YOU in trouble , if you’re a good student and you barley get in trouble your teachers might let you go or not pay attention to it the first or 2nd time u get in trouble . 🤗

౨ৎ I can not stretch this enough , PLEASE organize your things , being organized can make school less stressful for you since you know where all your things are ! it’s much more easier than stressing when you need a notebook / paper / or an assignment and you can’t find it , an app that can help you be organized is notion ; using notion can track your to do’s like if you finished an assignment , need help with something , and be organized in general 🎀 .

౨ৎ Don’t be nasty , most people like me don’t like to hang around people who smell bad or do disgusting things , stick to a scent that smells good ; you don’t need a bunch of perfume sprayed all over you unless you have 2 or more perfumes mixed together that smells heavenly 😋 , PLEASE use deodorant and brush your teeth TWICE a day that way you can be clean and healthy , also take a shower everyday there’s no point of missing a shower be clean . 🎀

Reader - content creator ™️, makes diff kind of content but it's mainly art and video/photography centric, she studied film and cinema but then realized that uni and higher education ™️ in general wasn't her thing, tried a million diff majors until she finally dropped out and started free lancing and realized she quite likes this way of living

Barty - aka BCJR, singer who dropped out of law school like 2 years in and decided to pursue music instead BCS he figured it'll piss his dad off before he realized he actually loves making music

Remus - wrote a book called "Let the Moon speak Tonight" and has literally never done anything else writing wise since, doesn't plan on it either but the book got really popular and thus he's become known as this one guy ™️, he studied English lit and works in a bookshop

Peter - he studies sth with geography or zoology maybe?? or sth with plants?? anyways he's a plant dad ™️ and loves animals so he has a YT channel as well as social accs dedicated to his hobbies, it's surprisingly popular with a bunch of people and they always tend to say he has a soothing sense of humour and a nice voice (also he's constantly doing random ass side quests and people in his comment section will always be like wait isn't this the guy who did/attended/participated/hosted xyz and his friends are like Pete wtaf when did you do that???)

Mary - she runs a jewelry account and a lot of times you'll see her collaborating with a bunch of brands and fashion content creators to bring out THE best looks ever, surprisingly to literally everyone though fashion isn't her main interest or sth she studied it's just a hobby, everyone is always surprised when they find out she is a nursing student and somehow has time to still keep her page running though she often shrugs it off with the explanation that it's not a chore for her but a way to unwind

Lily - food blogger, she gets invited to a shit ton of events and has a knack for connecting with people, she wanted to be a teacher before she got totally burnt out in uni and decided to just try things out to see where life takes her

Marlene - I'm undecided on this but I think she studied business because of her family before realizing it wasn't really sth for her so she ended up switching to sth with dance! she now runs a successful dancing centric acc and you often see her and James in each other's videos

James - he's an athlete, I wanna say soccer? or maybe a swimmer??? but anyways he had a scholarship in college and is currently training to go for nationals and then hopefully the Olympics, he runs a v Basic but fun sports acc, some people would straight up say he's a sports influencer but he just likes sharing his journey and helping others understand their own bodies

Sirius - an actor who started out as a child actor, pushed into the industry by his family; it took a toll on his mental and physical health to an extreme extent until he ran away at 15 and retired from filming; made a comeback of his own when he was 19 and the people love him

Regulus - model, pushed into the industry by his family ever since he was young; it took a toll on his health until he managed to cut ties with them when he was in his early 20s (he's still in his early to mid 20s but shh)

Evan - originally he studied forensic science, then he switched to bio chem but got bored really quick and just started doing fuck not, he models with Reg occasionally or sings with Barty and rn he's just vibing trying to figure out what the fuck life is even about

Pandora - she studied psychology and is a really big mental health advocate, originally she wanted to be a therapist but now she's on track to become a social worker, she has 2 accounts that she runs one of them being mental health related and has a lot of advocacy and charity things while the other is more personal and focuses on her beliefs and her more or less witchy plant girl life style, her and Peter often make videos together

Dorcas - she studied polisci no I don't take any criticism on this <3 your girl wants to make changes because she saw how the world treated her single mother and she's having none of that, she's always posting and talking about social justice issues, feminism, advocacy and she's doing all of that in style while defying the expectations of what a 'serious' woman should look and act like

I'm thinking of combining socmed and written chapters for this AU, simply because I like the mix and think it'll be the most efficient to bring along the story!

Hey and welcome to another episode of the orphic blog, where I ramble about anything and everything that's on my mind. If you like what you see, consider subscribing to my tag list because I cannot tell you when the next post will happen. 🙂

As many of you may have noticed: my native language is not English. It is German.

And maybe you have noticed that I have an Instagram-Account, where I post stuff irregularly.

Yes, I know, most people on Tumblr don't care for Instagram (legit), but I do, especially with my current Account. And since Instagram isn't much of a text-based platform, I will post my blog about this here, simply hoping people will read and understand.

For a little background:

I started Instagram on a regular basis in March 2018, where I joined the German Bookstagram Community. Blogging about books was always a hobby of mine, but I never wanted to be a professional blogger for publishers. I never wanted to have the pressure of having a deadline reading a book and writing an article. Reading was just an hobby and I don't want to make it a job.

But as it is with any niche within any social media app: People are very passionate about creating fancy stuff. In Germany we have a saying: "Höher, schneller, weiter." Higher, faster, farer.

See, I don't have that neat white rug or that perfect floor or bed, to take fancy photographs of these perfectly created bookish scenes. My lighting is bad and my photos don't look very professional. The effort I put into creating photos like this

it never really found an audience and I quit Instagram for a very long time. I simply hadn't the energy to create stunning photos every weekend, where I had to take all I wanted to photograph either outside or in another room, just that the lighting was decent.

After a while, around Summer 2021, I wanted to start a new Account, where the focus was on me and my person, rather than books and the perfect light. I started posting in English (because I wanted to international), talking about self-care, my life and writing. But soon enough, things got difficult again:

I felt like I am only copying the style from other people, Influencers I look up to. Like trying to be a person I am not.

And again, my account got quiet, just posting the photos I really thought about, mostly without a caption, because I don't know what to say.

Since the start of my new semester at Uni, I've met many people with social media accounts, running either full Instagram or even a YouTube Channel. Posting Insta-Stories isn't anything unusual anymore, since everyone does that. I feel like it is accepted that you host an account somewhere on the internet (maybe that's just the Computer Science department's mentality).

Now, that I am back at a community where shooting videos and creating content is more "normal", I kinda feel the urge to create again. But not only am I kinda lost in this space, I also don’t know which language I should use. I read and write in German, my native language. But I feel more comfortable talking in English. So, for video content, I would say English is my go to, but maybe creating stuff again in German will attract the right people since my work is down in German…? What are your opinions on that? (desperate for your advice here! Not kidding!)

But, as already mentioned: I still don't have the best base to create photos at home and I am not that outgoing that I could take photos every weekend on some trip somewhere (even though I would love to do so!).

I already figured that creating a story is sometimes easier than creating a post, but still I don't know what to talk about on a regular basis. Like, my life isn't that interesting? I don't live in a fancy town. I don't go partying all weekend. I don't have friends to do funny stuff with.

I am just a normal girl, living a boring life in a town, where nothing happens. I write fantasy stories and work for uni all day. There isn't much to say about me. I am not interesting.

But maybe that's exactly what's interesting, I don't know.

Maybe, I just start and trust the process.

Done is better than perfect.

I always tell other people to just start and it'll work out in the end, but I never trust myself and the challenges that I have to face. I doubt myself, especially in the creative, outgoing part. I am great at doing stuff privately, but I cannot stay open and out-and-about with stuff. I tend to back away from yelling into the world, that I am here.

I reach for the stars, while pushing the sky further away.

Having an aesthetic eye is nice, but it can drag you down in stuff like that. Wishing for the perfect photo will not help me create a post. Wanting to photograph something does and sometimes, if you look closely enough, you will realise that even the 3.5 million subscriber accounts once started with crooked photos and wanky cameras.

I need to remind myself of that. And posting that one reel that is in my opinion absolutely horrible was one step in that direction.

We live in a world, where one cannot speak freely without having to be afraid of people getting wildly mad at them because they like something, they don't like or say something they don't like.

We live in a world, where the intelligent have to dumb themselves down, so that the dumb won't feel harassed.

And as someone, who is a people pleaser, I am deadly afraid of creating a mob out there, may it be on Instagram or Tumblr, because my world view might be a little different.

In the end, I don't know if I every gain many followers, many people who want to listen to my words. Normally, people don't do. And that's okay, even if it is a little discouraging for me to see people visit my blogs, have a look and then vanish again, never to be seen again.

I want to talk about what fuels me: writing, computer science, communities, coziness and slow living.

But I don't know how.

I don't know how on neither Instagram, nor Tumblr.

And that's also why I am on a semi-hiatus at the moment. Because I feel lost in this community, where I want to participate, want to create, but feel like in a glass box, able to look outside, but no one can come in.

Week 2 - Post #1

I will be the first to admit that I spend too much time on social media. I do not post very often, in fact I rarely post social media, but I am an advid scroller.

When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is check Snapchat. Sometimes I have a few chats to respond to from the night prior. But, it is mostly to send those streaks that Max Stossel was talking about. Actively making sure that I am doing my part to not let the streak die. I'm sure some of you reading can relate to this. I have streaks with people that I no longer talk to, but because the streak is so high, neither of us have let it die yet. Even though it is meaningless at this point to send blank pictures everyday to eachother to save a number when you wouldn't even consider them a friend. Hopefully that's not just me.

Even though I rarely post on social media, I spend most of my free time or right before bed seeing what everyone else is up to. Whenever I am bored or have free time, I find myself rotating between the same four apps. Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and TikTok. Max Stossel said it perfectly comparing social media to a "slot machine". Just like a slot machine, as you are scrolling you never know what you are going to see and that is what sucks us in. We fall down a rabbit hole because the content and entertainment is simply endless and it is different (for the most part) with every scroll. I can scroll on TikTok for hours because it never gets boring.

Having social media constantly available affects my life because rather than going out and doing things, spending time outside or being productive like Emma Rathbone talked about in her article "Before the Internet". If I did not have social media constantly available I think I would read a lot more and take more walks. I would spend more time on self care and focusing on myself. Instead, I find myself glued to my screen unable to get off social media. 15 more minuites turns into 3 more hours very quickly.

I cannot think of a specific time where I didn't have access to social media for an extended period of time. Other than maybe in an airplane. However, I don't think not having social media available is the issue, I think the issue atleast for me is not being able to see who is texting me or if someone texted me and missing out on that. There have been times in my life where I know that I have just been itching to be able to check my phone when I can't just to see what is going on or what I have missed.

I am also guilty of comparing myself and my life to those who I see on social media. Whether it is outfits, body types, hair styles, lifestyles, location. Anything you can compare, you name it, and I have most likely compared my life in some kinda way to what I see on social media. Mostly negative thoughts as I am usually wishing I looked like the person on my screen or was living their life rather than my own. Even if I know deep down that those pictures are editing in some way.

A quote that stuck with me from Max Stossel's video is, "social media is not real life but there are real human beings behind the screen". People post on social media what they want everyone else to see. They are not going to post when they are having a bad day or a bad photo of themselves or when they are just sitting at home. They post what they know other people will be "jealous over" and wish they were experiencing. It is important to remember that realy human beings like me and you are behind the post. Even influencers do not live the perfect lives they seem to be because of what they post on social media.

To wrap all of this up, I think this blog is a great way to be more intentional with my use of technology, I think this is a perfect way to start being more intentional on social media. Technology should be used to learn rather than constantly comparing yourself to others. I also think it is important to be as real as possible on social media because no one is perfect. I also will admit that I can cut back on how much I scroll and TikTok and starting readling more. I think that we often take social media for granted as a constant source of communication and entertainment, rather than living in the moment. Put your phone down, make some memories and enjoy life away from a screen.

I was a happy person, who naturally had to do things I didn’t like or want to do, but I always was able to do what I want as well — to draw after I finish my homework, to read books in the evening, or watch anime, or go to jewelry classes and make ceramics at home after work. I’ve always had opportunities to do anything I wish — and I was used to it. And when the pandemic hit I was not upset at all because I could spend the time I used to spend on the way to the office and back on my own projects and hobbies, on the things I love.

But then…

The war started �� and all my dreams and plans and hopes and habits were ruined in an instant, and after the series of events I ended up in entirely different place, where I can not do creative things that I used to do for years. All I wanted to do was implossible here. And I was stuck with the boring work that I hated.

At some point I found myself absolutely unable to focus on my tasks — like, my attention span was shorter than a tiktok video, I struggled with filling in even a short form (I was working with documents a lot). I was distracted by literally everything, from my phone to the sounds behind my window, and the fact that I’m working from home didn’t help at all — I did anything possible but not work. And I felt as crap.

Should I even mention that I didn’t have any energy even to go buy groceries? I spent weekends watching dramas and even not remembering what I’ve watched.

But at the same point I’ve started to get less paperwork and my priorities changed — I’ve returned to working on a project that I’m really interested in — and guess what — my ability to focus ✨magically✨ reappeared, and last week I worked for 7-9 hours a day almost without distractions — though my environment or schedule or anything else didn’t change. It was just the interesting vs important but boring staff I have to do. That’s all. And still, it feels like my condition changed radically.

So lately I was thinking about all this a lot — I’ve never noticed how important is it to at least like your work. No, of course I knew that to like what you do is better than to hate it — but it never crossed my mind how much it can influence my energy levels.

So. What I wanted to say. For everyone who read this — try to do more of what you like to do! Not just think tat it’s important, but what you feel good doing, even if others think it’s silly (i’m working on a language learning app now, and it’s obviously much less important than making an accounting system (especially in a tiny country where accountants still do everything manually and need some good software), but it’s way more joyful for me, so I’ll do that silly little language learning app!). to be clear, this is human nature. in the 80’s everyone carried newspapers and books around to avoid even one moment of boredom.

but what i implore you to consider is: is the habit you have built with tiktok worth returning to? it may feel like a need now, but that need was created by a habit that solidified itself over years. is it worth supporting a platform that is actively shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars to the trump administration? when tiktok comes back, do you want to be exposed to all of the “i thought trump was bad but he just gave me back my favorite app” memes? do you want to be a part of that normalization of a fascist who is only restoring this app because he was paid off?

You clicked on the app and watched the first video that popped up. And of course, it was a video to Harry's song, Watermelon Sugar. You watched it and saw how they would record themselves before and after getting high.

"Someone's a bad influence," You sang and scrolled to the next video as Harry scoffed.

Though he turned his body away from you, you could see his heard turn around to look at your phone.

You kept scrolling until you saw a video of a girl dancing. It looked like a fairly easy dance and despite it being so basic it had 6.6 million views.

"Oooh, I wanna do that one!" Harry blurted out and moved closer to you.

"How old are we?" You mocked him and playfully rolled your eyes.

"Are you gonna do it with me or wha'?" He huffed and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Okay okay," You nodded.

You got off the bed and set the phone on the minimalistic bookshelf in your bedroom. Harry came beside you and you guys watched the video a couple of times before trying the dance out.

"H, babe, that's not how you do it," You laughed as he tried to hit the "Woah."

"Well, you do it then. Since you got your TikTok degree," He huffed and plopped on the bed.

"Okay," You shrugged and started to record. You danced perfectly first try and turned to look at Harry with a smug expression. "See, not too difficult."

He rolled his eyes and stood up so you could teach him and he eventually got the hang of it after a little trial and error."How did you learn that so quickly?" He asked as you both sat on the bed.

"I make TikToks all the time, I just never post them or show them to you," You shrugged as you watched the video your two had just finished.

"When do you have the time to do this?" He asked. "We're together all the time."

"When you go down for your 11:00 nap," You giggled as your finger hovered over the button that would draft the video.

"Um, excuse me... what do you think you're doing?" He scoffed and looked at you with a raised eyebrow.

"What H?"

"Post it. Are you ashamed of me or something?" He asked and you rolled your eyes and pushed him away.

"Get out of here, Clown," You smiled and shook your head.

"I'm serious, post it," He chuckled.

"Do penguins fly?"

"Okay, well you know what I meant. It's okay, maybe it'll keep the fans busy for a bit."

You nodded and thought of a caption before laughing and posting the video.

"Okay, let me nap with you," You said and crawled under the covers. He laid beside you and pulled the covers up to his chest and kissed your cheek before dozing off.

You woke up to your phone ringing nonstop. You groaned and moved out of Harry's arms to grab the phone. You looked at the screen and your eyes went wide.

"H!" You gasped and shook him awake.

"Don't bother me unless you're making cupcakes, Y/N. You know the rules," He mumbled and tried to turn away.

"H, our video is blowing up," You said and put the phone in his face.

He opened his eyes and took the phone from your hands.

I feel like ranting today.

The urban fashion world bores the FUCK outta me. Like everyone wants to do the same thing, appease the whole "baddie ig model" aesthetic & it’s boring. At this point I don’t even care if they bring back the 2000s style or not JUST DO SOMETHING CREATIVE!!!! You know it’s bad when the world would rather go on eBay to buy clothes than buy your clothes. And really it’s sad to see because black people were literally on top when it came to fashion & trends. How did we fall so hard from grace :(

Black people need to get off apps like tiktok & Twitter n such because they clearly don’t want us there. There are so many young black app developers that deserve a chance & want/need our support and we’re paying them dust because we keep giving our time and attention to something that doesn’t want it.

As much as I love 90s/00s music we need to let go & move on and let music evolve. Music is constantly changing & evolving and the sooner we expect that the better. Plus there so many dope artists that go unnoticed or is underground maybe if we start giving them attention then music will change for our liking.

Video vixens & big budget music videos need to come back. Music & music videos plays a big part of young people’s lives and young black girls need to see themselves as more then strippers & prostitute. And yes I know the 2000s did it as well but we’ve amplified it to 100 now. And once We bring video vixens back it’s gonna be more inclusive & diverse than ever before so every type of black girl can be seen.

Why do people think that just because we have technology that we’re not allowed or don’t want to have fun??? There’s no reason why we don’t have spring bling or rap city. There’s no reason why we don’t have teen summit or fashion shows for black designers. There’s no reason why black kids don’t have funny shows & movies that resonate with them for years to come. who decided that because we have phones, we can’t have fun quality content???

Instagram needs to die. That app became so boring and it is just biting everyone’s style. Trying so damn hard to be this everything app & it’s not working. Plus instagram models & bbl culture just sucked whatever joy it had left from it. 

The 2000s aesthetic has become so watered down & generic & white washed. Not only do they not know the difference between Y2K & Mcbling (no matter how many times we explain it to them) they don’t do either of them right. Stumped? It’s safe to say that if the question were asked to name a White model that wasn’t Kate Moss or Cyndi Crawford, best case scenario you would’ve excelled with a list to provide. Maybe something like: Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Shalom Harlow, Carla Bruni, Heidi Klum..you get my point.

At times, Pop Culture can be a fair-weather friend. Monday’s It-girl becomes Friday’s nobody and by Sunday there’s a new hot thing in town to get all the girls in a fuss. But as nostalgia-trends rises as capitalism’s newest enterprise, endorsed largely by social media app, Instagram, history is being retold by the agenda of it’s curator. The selective hearing of  Instagram accounts like @90scelebvibes (391K followers) and @90sanxiety (793K followers) present a facade that the past was rather beige, leaving largely out the credit due to the Black and people of color creatives that developed and inspired the trends imitated today.

Bay area based, Fashion archivist Rashida Reneé, takes on self-love to a familial level celebrating her love and the appreciation of Black designers, models and other fashion industry influencers that otherwise go forgotten in our modern culture. In fashion, as in anything else, things old become anew. However, Reneé takes on the responsibility as a trend gatekeeper, providing evidence of what fashion used to be and recognizing the faces we longed forgotten.

RR: (laughs) It’s weird, I kind of like to keep it to myself. Keep track of what I like and my thoughts. I don’t know. I'm very low-key person in real life, but when I do leave the house (pauses) I do, I promise! I just like my personal time, but when it’s time to be out I am present, as much as possible. I do what I do becauseII like giving information to people and give them links and information just so they know.

CJ: What brought you into fashion archiving?

RR: My whole archiving process was originally for myself and filling in spots of information where there it was empty of black people. Of course, there is street fashion, but in terms of online fashion, sites like Manrepeller, you didn’t see a lot of black girls doing it and the people doing it I thought were lame. Finding other black people who weren’t anti-black in those kind of spaces. I felt a lot of people were trying to make us to assimilate. Everyone was kind of like doing the same things and it was like, ‘Naomi Campbell!’ But if it were any other dark girl it didn’t matter. So, I started my own blog and then I had to stop myself from posting Naomi Campbell’s photos too. I would do one picture of Naomi Campbell a day and try to really give props to other black woman involved and black people in general. When I was younger I was familiar with the other models not just Naomi Campbell, my mom was really in it with Naomi. She worked in a beauty salon, which had magazines of all the models. Like, black hair magazines, they always listed the models so, no matter what you knew who they were. Whoever it was in the 90s, ��this is who that is and this who that is.’ You’d see the oldest Destiny Child’s video shoots in black hair magazines. I just haven’t seen other people doing that. There are other girls now that focus more on Hip Hop in 90s and 2000s. Livejournal, fashion spot, Tumblr, people didn’t go out of their way to scan the black models or even try to name them. It’s funny, people online, they don’t even try to hide their biases. No one was really fashion blogging the way I like or how I see .

CJ:In your piece for Office Magazine you mention, from Patrick Kelley to today’s influence of Dapper Dan, American culture from its roots drips of Black influence and culture. Why do you think Black culture is so immutable and where do you see the ownership of our creations.

RR: People I mean know, it’s just like, it’s weird and odd to even talk about. Not just people referencing me or copying, I feel like I am being gaslit all the time or being told that. People love stealing from black people. People love stealing from black people. People love stealing from black people and lying about it. People hate black people but they think we are cool. I can’t even (pauses)yeah it’s very weird. The twitter thing is weird (sighs).

CJ: It is weird.

RR: (sighs) It’s not really helping them. It’s boring to live with no personality. To see someone interesting and steal from them to bolster themselves. [On social media] we have the means to share with each other, like, moments that are of shared experiences of oppression and that is even imitated. I don’t know why the copy of things are okay. It is such a multi-layered thing. Or the way the Stans talk like mainly the Black queer and Black trans talk and how all of that is now being used by everyone. Ariana Grande, ya know, icons talk like girls on the ballrooms did back in 2006. Parodying things. It helps them develop their own brand, I don’t understand their fascination with us anyway. I’m into my own shit and own culture. I like the way black people express themselves and other people use us and what we do to talk to each other or communicate and then take that to feel cool. I’ve always been,like, ‘why would someone want to be like this?’ or pretend. I don’t get it. People run out of content. I know people used to make fun of me and the things I used to be and ironically they are into it now. People need to find their own hobbies. They are bored.

CJ: The internet is complex. It’s a parody of itself.

RR: Knowing your history is important. You need to know where you came from to know where you are going. When it comes to fashion archives the question is, ‘what is it that you are looking for or trying to highlight?’ My concern is that fashion archiving is feeding into nostalgic trends, where it’s easier to mimic what was done before rather then create new moments. Do you share the same sentiments?

CJ: What is it about fashion that excites you?

RR: It’s so fun and so funny. The dolls are taking over. That’s how most things go, the things that happened come back with a hyper focus. It really is going full out now. It’s interesting to see how people are dressing now. [Fashion] is always reflective of the political climate. Think about the 80s everyone is dressing like a dickhead. Then when people got sick of dressing like a dickhead, minimalism comes in. We cycle through trends so fast, today. I remember a girl wearing a hair clips and no one was into it. Then the next week everyone was wearing them, then I see Cyndi Lauper in an interview wearing hair clips. She’s like 50-something and she’s wearing hair clips made out of Swarovski crystals. It’s so interesting. It’s funny how it happens. Now everyone is into fashion.

CJ: Who are your biggest fashion influences ?

RR: My biggest influences are Naomi Campbell and my mom. Girls I follow on the internet. My mom is from San Francisco lives her own life and is very eclectic. I get a lot from her and different taste. Foxy Brown is also very inspiring, I reference her a lot I think about her and Steven Miesel. Steven knows how to do everything. Steven can do everything. Everyone knows I am a crazy Beyoncé fan. But, I have different girls for different moods. My main inspo is Naomi and Foxy Brown. I really gravitated to Foxy because she was more into Prada and Chloe when Stella McCartney was there. Because of Foxy I love Chloe. She was very cool. Naomi is, you just aspire to that level of greatness. There is no one else. Even in her flaws she handles them so well. I can’t imagine someone else with that kind of rap sheet to not get fully canceled. I judge people by how they react to criticism. She handles it really well. I find that really inspiring.

CJ: What film or television do you think has the best fashion catalog? If you could what character's closet would you love to raid?

RR: I am so frazzled. There’s so much stuff I like. I write things down specifically, because I can never remember. I watched The Nanny last year with Fran Drescher, when I was really depressed and was like, ‘Wow this is inspiring.’ Brenda Cooper, her mind. Everyone had a look in. Pose, is another one. Everything has intentions from the main characters to the background characters. I really like the first season of costume design. It’s commitment to that era. Someone is always dressed like, Karen White or Jodi Whitley. Elektra is very dynasty, that high lady energy. I love that about the show. I love Glow, the costume designer, Beth Morgan. I love when people do era shows, specifically the 80s and they don’t try to soften it, especially in makeup or hair. They aren’t scared to embrace the ugliness, I love that. That’s what good costume design is about. High fashion is easy, but what really gets me is watching old movies and looking at the clothes.  

CJ: We are moving into a new decade of 2020. I have a feeling it may be the year of 2020 vision and final clarity. What are your aspirations for this new era and what do you hope to see from the world?

RR: I feel like the children are our future. That’s what I’m looking at, to see what the kids are into. People are more focused into what they look like and I remember if someone dressed a little bit out of fashion it was a huge deal and get talked about. But now they are embracing their weirdness and experimenting. Do you watch that Tik Tok stuff? I just want a regular life. Happy, healthy, all my kids are happy and healthy. When I move to [Los Angeles] and get hotter, hotter and I want to  become, what is that called, a wellness person? I want a Goop moment, but with Solange aesthetics. Maybe make a propaganda film to get people to stop wearing wigs.

this is just gonna be me bitching about stuff under the read more because i need to do that, but i don’t want to burden anyone specifically so i must burden everyone at once. tw for child death, child abuse and probably other shitty stuff. i’m not the victim of these, my parents/their siblings are/were and i think about it too much.

so i dunno if anyone else ever does that thing when you’re bored where you look yourself up, but i was doing that today and stumbled across some huge family tree website that includes stuff from both sides of my family and i thought it was interesting especially because i know almost nothing about my paternal grandfather since he and my grandma got divorced a couple years after my dad was born, and he died a few years before i was born. from what little i know, he sucked as a person and cheated on my grandma, but i still can’t help but be curious. somehow he’s not even close to being my worst grandparent. anyway, i didn’t find very much about him other than some basic stuff, even just trying to look him up on google doesn’t do anything, i don’t think he even got an obituary and i don’t know if anyone cared about him at the end of his life, i don’t know how much he deserved it all (my dad doesn’t tell me about his childhood unless he’s super drunk at 4am watching music videos on the youtube tv app with me). also, not from this website, but i learned that my dad’s former stepfather who used to threaten my grandma/aunt/dad with his gun is still alive and i’m upset about that because i (falsely) assumed he was dead. he was a cop and the other cops wouldn’t do anything about him.

what i did find out, or rather maybe rediscover? (i knew this information before but i wasn’t supposed to and i had repressed/forgotten it) was that my mom had two brothers who died in infancy, and it’s both appalling and entirely unsurprising because that’s just a family tradition when you’re irish catholic. i could’ve had two more uncles. i don’t know how or why they died. thank god for findagrave.com. my mom also had a really shitty childhood where my grandpa was (and still is) a fucking horrible and miserable person; he’d beat my grandma and their five living kids, and she’d beat the kids and the kids would all beat each other. i don’t really know how to end this but i’m too goddamn lazy to look into therapy right now and i needed to tell anyone who would listen.

none of these are even my own problems but i think about them a lot. i do have a few problems of my own but they’re not at all comparable (i’ve convinced myself i’m gonna die a virgin because i’m ugly and too goddamned selective and i don’t have any interests or talents i can see myself pursuing as a career) and sometimes i think i don’t deserve to talk to anyone about my own insecurities because everything could be a hell of a lot worse. for two people who didn’t have a single good parental influence between them, i think they did a pretty good job raising me.
