Under the Italian Sun without the burn
Italy has long been the number one travel destination for tourists from all parts of the world. Some are seeking to connect with her artistic and historical past whilst other just want to experience the mythical Italian summer. And whilst and Italian vacation is a wonderful thing, there are some places to avoid in summer. Cities like Venice, Rome and Florence, renown for their beauty and history can become over-crowded with throngs of tourists sending the locals packing! But does this mean you should avoid the whole of Italy in the summer? Most definitely not! Our friends at Escape in their July 2024 post have some great advice on how best to avoid the crowds. Since Covid there has been a 19% increase in Aussies heading to Italy. Alessandra Allegretti shares how to avoid the overcrowded cities and those ever-present “obnoxious” tourists simply by swapping one place for another!
Looking for the cultural heart of Italy without the crowds?
Alessandra recommends giving the big cities a miss in the summer and suggests visiting parts of Italy that can provide you with a more relaxed, laid-back, and real experience. Cities like Bologna and Turin are less well-known but are equally charming, full of history, wonderful food, and unique experiences. The folks at Escape.com suggest swapping Rome, always hot and crowded, for the elegant tranquillity of Bergamo in the north of Italy. Full of history, Bergamo is a short drive to Milan and to Switzerland. Similarly, Florence is the art lovers’ number one destination but in the summer is is almost unbearable. Alessandra and her team recommend the nearby, medieval town of Pistoia. Surrounded by rolling hills and tranquil panoramas, Pistoia can offer tourists the Tuscan dream with a fraction of the stress and without the crowds!
Wanting to experience the quintessential estate italiana…the Italian summer?
Alessandra’s big tip is to head to the eastern seaboard of Italy to the lesser know regions of the Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia (although Puglia is starting to hot up as a destination). The tranquil waters of the Adriatic Sea lap the coastline along these regions, each with their own unique villages, delicious cuisine and local colour. Escape.com suggests giving the super crowded, ever popular Polignano al Male in Puglia for the lesser-known Otranto. The region of Abruzzo abounds with beautiful seaside towns such as Vasto and it is a short drive into the mountains to escape the heat. These regions have the beauty of Tuscany with half the crowds.
The so-called Italian Riviera has become a true mecca for tourists with the Cinque Terre, the five seaside villages perched on the rocky coastline, often uncomfortably busy. Further along this beautiful coastline, nearer the French border, you can find a magical seaside town called Bordighera, where you can sit on the beach and enjoy the “dolce far niente” of an Italian summer.
Beaches not your thing?
The Dolomite Mountains, popular in the winter with skiers and equally enticing for hikers and lovers of nature in the summer. If beaches and crowds are not your thing then the cooler weather and majestic scenery might be what you are looking for. I remember my trip to Rome one August, where I found myself jostling through hordes of people just to catch a glimpse of the Colosseum. It was beautiful, yes, but the sheer number of tourists made it hard to appreciate the magic of the city.
So, before you book that summer trip to Rome or Venice, take a moment to explore alternatives that could surprise and delight you even more. Your European summer doesn’t have to be a sweaty, overcrowded affair. In fact, it could be the peaceful, culturally rich escape you’ve always dreamed of—if you just know where to look. Ready to plan your perfect European summer?

Cannes
It has sure been a while, and a few countries!
Cannes was nice, it was not my favourite town ever but we had nice accommodation which makes up for a lot. Our first day in Cannes we walked the promenade into town, where we went to a fromagerie and grabbed some local cheese, and some breads and dips, and got really into making dinner at home, which has been a relief for my poor, poor wallet.
One of my favourite parts of Cannes was... not in Cannes, but instead the next tiny town over called Antibes. We took the train 8 mins down the line and found lovely, quiet streets that led to a fresh produce market. You could buy anything at the produce market - fish, meat, olives, fruit, vege, meals from around the world, flowers, plants. It was a wonderland and we both were in awe. We bought some asparagus, some garlic, two different types of flavoured butters (Kampot pepper and garlic & caramelised onion butter) and were off on our merry way for a trot around town. We found a ferris wheel where we bought a ticket. I am not sure how many of my readers will know what a 'power move' is, but is when one person asserts their dominance over another person, often in an unusual, unexpected or inconvenient way. This is how I would describe our experience with the ferris wheel operator. We bought our tickets, and he made us line up at the 'Line up here' gate, for a good 5 or so minutes - and this is just us, there is not another single soul around to go on this ferris wheel - and he just watched us as we stood waiting to go on. Eventually he had watched us watching him with confusion for enough time, and he came out and let us on the ride. He then proceeded to pash the girl who was working in the ticket both while we went around and around and around on the ferris wheel and thought we may just grow old and die there, listening to a playlist that was made up of songs that are played at the end of every single Cameron Diaz Rom-Com ever made. Eventually we got let off.
The next day we went for a swim at the beach, wandered up to a museum that we thought might be about Cannes related things but ended up being about Polynesian history and had lots of videos of exorcisms and shaman trances. Interesting and unexpected, some would say. We then did the done thing in Cannes and caught a movie in one of the Film Festival cinemas - we saw Asteroid City, which was great.
With Cannes, and a few wheels of cheese under our belts, we were looking to head to Nice, however after some unrest and riots which were starting to brew in Nice, we decided to skip town and head straight for a little town called Bordighera, just across the border in Italy.

Reminds me of one of my favourite painting ever, Bordighera, by Claude Monet (he made a series of views from there, worshiping the twisted beauty of the pines on the seashore). *writing Halloween fics*
Me: I should send Elio and Oliver to this beach, I’ll google if you can go there from Bordighera. It looks lovely!
Two minutes after: No information on how to get to the beach can be found, but a dead body was found this summer.
Me: Okay maybe they’ll go to the lake.

Canon EOS 250D Taken on 11/07/2021. * Ospedaletti is a coastal village that enjoys a very mild climate throughout the year. This is thanks to its unique location: Ospedaletti is bookended by two headlands, Capo Nero and Capo Sant’Ampelio, ensuring protection from the cold winds coming from the north in winter and a lively regime of breezes in summer. For bicycle and walk lovers, Ospedaletti has a cycle path that connects it to Sanremo and up to Imperia, overlooking splendid beach clubs and many free beaches, both sandy and pebbly, equipped for all needs. A bonus is that Ospedaletti is a fairly quiet place, loved by both tourists and those who live there all year round. Alright so these might not be an exact match but I’m gonna give this a whirl.
My first instinct is to turn to impressionist french musicians like Erik Satie and Claude Debussy.
Satie:
Gnossiennes No.1: you are near water, moving water, not the babbling of a brook,, but the insistent crash of waves on the shore,, they swell and retract, almost angry, almost sad,, calling at you to walk in and never move,, Beach at Etretat, Boat At Low Tide At Fecamp, Mouth Of The Seine At Honfleur, Cap Martin, and perhaps Waves Breaking.
Gnossiennes No.2: While No.2 is similar to No. 1, the piece overall creates a much more airy, light, and transient atmosphere. The right hand is often moving a lot, lending a forward movement that No.1 has less of. maybe it’s an actual river this time, or maybe the waves are not from the sea, but instead from your eyes,, Monets I might pair it with Flowering Trees Near The Coast, Ice Floes Misty Morning, Morning On The Seine In The Rain, The Sheltered Path
Gnossiennes No. 3: back to sadness and water,, like No.1,, but this time it is less of an intense, chaotic sad,, Weeping Willow8; Impression, Sunrise; Houses of Parliament, London, Symphony in Rose;
Gnossiennes No. 4: Peaceful/tranquil water,, you’re not really sad anymore,, just watching ripples in a pond, and the little splashes that frogs make,, maybe you’re still a little sad,, but not much,, It’s calm,, effervescent (like a snail, y’know), Red Water Lilies, Water Lilies27, All of the other waterlilies,, Argenteuil Late Afternoon
Gnossiennes No. 5: You’re walking now. You’re happy for once,, maybe you’re still staring at the pond,, maybe you’re running through a field, looking at flowers,, either way you are smiling,, and maybe even frolicing, The Iris Garden At Giverny, Poplars On The Banks Of The River Epte, The Japanese Bridge 3, Monet's garden in Argenteuil Sun, Fontainebleau Forest
Gnossiennes No. 6: you’re still walking but you’re not happy anymore,, you’re not, like, intensely mad or sad,, you’re just having an existential crisis of the bad kind Olive Trees In Bordighera, Le Pave de Chailly, Valley of the Creuse, Grey Day, Dolceacqua
Gymnopédie No.1: you’re walking, lost in thought,, reminiscing perhaps,, Canal In Zaandam; Cliff At Petit Ailly At Varengeville; Coastguard Cabin; Pathway In Monets Garden At Giverny, The Avenue; The Artist's Garden at Vetheuil 1880; The Church At Varengeville Against The Sunset; Tulip Fields With The Rijnsburg Windmill
Debussy:
Reverie: you exist and stand still to watch as the rest of the world exists around you,, look around you,, all these things,, they exist, they are here, and so are you,, life in inherently transient,, but for a moment the world can stand still and time can fall away,, Monet's Garden at Giverny, Alice Hoschede In The Garden, Gondola In Venice, Leicester Square At Night, Relaxing In The Garden Argenteuil, Rowboat On The Seine At Jeufosse (really, it could pair with any Monet)
Clair de Lune: you are running through the rain,, time is going far too quickly and far too slowly all at once,, you have opened your arms and are maybe laughing or maybe crying,, you stop and the world spins around you,, you lay down and there are raindrops falling onto your eyelids,, Waterloo Bridge Sunlight In The Fog, Girls In A Boat, A Woman Reading, The Walk Woman With A Parasol, San Giorgio Maggiore At Dusk, The Artists Family In The Garden, Terrace at the Seaside, Sainte-Adresse, The Magpie, The Cliff Walk Pourville
There are literally so many good Debussy songs that I’m just going to stop and suggest that you listen to them while scrolling through Monets (and some Van Goghs). one last one tho,, Arabesque No.1 and No.2 really go with all the Water Lilies.
give me songs that sound like Claude Monet’s art
#debussy#monet#I started this a while ago#and was like YEAH I'm gonna kill this#but now im distracted#i just want to listen to debussy and look at monets#which is the SPIRIT of what I was going to do#but doesn't really accomplish anything#sorry#-_-
