54 Minutes with Julie Arduini & Friends by Julie Arduini
When our youngest was prek and early elementary age, she had a one-track mind about her birthday. It’s in August, but the topic was year-round. It was such a mindset she forgot other people had birthdays as well. We had to ban her from talking about HER birthday so her brother would feel remembered on HIS! I remember as I approached 50, I thought hey, this is a biggie. I wanted to really have…

“It was one of the last days of spring.
The Mission District’s streets were warm from the bright sun but breezy. Inside the shaded coolness of the writing center, groups of ESL students worked with volunteers in hushed voices. It was the internship of my college-self’s dreams, and I sat typing at a computer when I heard one of the tutors say, “What’s a bumpkin? Um . . . Bonnie! Bonnie’s a bumpkin!”
“Excuse me?!” I laughed while trying to hide how insulted I was. “I am most certainly not a bumpkin!”
The volunteer tutor sat by a tween novel-reading ESL student, and they both laughed. The tutor said, “But you’re from a small country town in Illinois. Doesn’t that make you a bumpkin?” I tried to explain that being from a small town in flyover country is brilliant, but those two city-dwellers just couldn’t understand.
But at least I was in good company.
As we see in today’s Gospel, the leaders of the Sanhedrin thought Saints Peter and John were just a couple of country bumpkins, too. And maybe they were!
But the boldness of those two uneducated, ordinary men (see Acts 4:13) was enough to scare the elders and scribes who ordered Peter and John to “not speak or teach at all in the Name of Jesus” (Acts 4:18).
Yet they refused to be silent, saying it was impossible for them not to speak of what they had lived (see Acts 4:20). Not only were they compelled to speak based on their own experiences with the Lord, but He had commissioned them to spread the Gospel in Mark 16:15. They did not allow themselves to be held back by where they came from, what they lacked in skill or talent, or really, anything else.
They were who God wanted them to be—bumpkins and all—and they were going to be who He created them to be. They cooperated with His grace and got the job done.
We access a greater sense of who God created us to be when we’re practicing growing in virtue. Brush up on the virtues with a quick look over here.”

From The Boy Who Lived to Beatification: Fulton Sheen's First Miracle
From The Boy Who Lived to Beatification: Fulton Sheen’s First Miracle
“Fulton Sheen, Fulton Sheen,” prayed Bonnie Engstrom. She had just given birth, and her baby boy was dead, his umbilical cord tied tightly around his neck.
He did not breathe; his heart did not beat. His leg was necrotic from a misfired epinephrine shot intended to revive him. Sixty-one minutes after delivery, his heart still did not beat, and the monitor showed nothing but “pulseless electric…

You are completely known by God. And you are completely loved ♥️
.
God responds to all of us today as He responded to Paul and Peter. He sees us as so incredibly lovable and valuable, no matter the sin or situation we find ourselves in. He will not depart from us but He will draw us ever closer, transforming us in powerful ways with His grace || Bonnie Engstrom @blessedisshe__
.
I am convinced that if everyone of us believed it #godlovesyou — the world would be changed forever ♥️ God is in love with you like no one else is. Praying we all believe in Jesus’ love for us. this is the quietest. simplest. most powerful. revolution. ever.

Marc Warren in Twisted Tales: Txt Msg Recd (2005)
Also featuring Nick Frost, Zoe Telford and Bonnie Engstrom
I know I posted some GIFs from this before, but they were from a poor-quality YouTube clip, so I thought I’d upgrade... of course Tumblr still limits how much I can do, GIF-wise, which is why I haven't been posting so many of late. (I still make enough of them, but I don’t usually have time to spend another couple of hours resizing or “optimizing” them, and I hate posting the smaller or blurrier results.) As always, better versions of these should be up on my Imgur account shortly.
This half hour horror anthology installment ha become an April Fool’s tradition for me this past couple of years. It’s another instance of Marc making me find a character I should find appalling somehow human and even lovable in spite of his numerous flaws. Also, your cellphone is in fact trying to kill you. Pedestrian fatalities involving drivers or walkers distracted by cellphones have risen by as much as 23% in recent years.. and every day at least one person on my timeline is griping about their iPod not behaving itself,
Also... love the bra in that one scene, and the fact it’s just there and never referenced or explained. And Nick Frost is always a bonus.
I get asked about the Marc Warren Alphabet meme I never completed occasionally... I am still very eager to share GIFs and other stuff with fans but I’ve tried to focus more on my creative work lately, though I know that’ll never be as popular. Also, I'm never sure what Marc would think of all the abject fangirling, so I try to keep things muted and respectful.
Some good and bad news for Marc Warren fans: he cancelled his appearance at next week’s Wales Comic Con (yes, again) citing work conflicts. Somehow I had a feeling he’d do that... he seems so publicity-shy and reticent off-camera in recent years that I can’t see him feeling comfortable at such an event where he’s likely to be the center of attention. (I have heard lovely stories about fans meeting him on a one-on-one basis, or even getting him to pose for pictures, but he shies away from red carpet-type spectacles and has been curiously absent from the promotion for Snatch, at least for the US launch.) And given that my chances of being in Wales anytime soon (or at any Comic Con type event) are virtually nil, I’m just thrilled to hear Marc might have a new acting gig.
No, I have no intel on what that might be... wild guesses include Max Beesley’s long-delayed film Mr Goodnight, a sequel to the audiobook Monster 1983 (the original ended in a cliffhanger, with Deputy Lander’s fate undetermined), even that bizarre Melrose at 44 (aka Dream1997) project might be on again, though I doubt it. (Since I’ve said in public forums that I don’t think Marc is sill involved... I’ll probably be proved wrong. Murphy’s Law y’know.) I still haven’t given up hope Marc might be in David Morrissey’s upcoming series Britannia, though I have zero evidence for this hunch. It might just be publicity for a UK launch for Snatch. (Somehow I don’t think he’d be in a second series of Snatch, though I’ve only watched 3 episodes of the first... I’d love to be wrong about what I suspect happens to his character.) NO SPOILERS, please!
Anyhow... if there are any GIFs fans would like to see, let me know. I know the more popular shows are well-covered in this department, though I’ll have to do Mad Dogs at some point. Rewatching that lately and just pining for more, or for those actors to reteam on anything.

“I can’t bring myself to fully read the Book of Job. I’m familiar with the basics of the story and have heard it proclaimed at Mass but it’s so hard for me to read and study it in its entirety. I am uncomfortable taking in all the details of the poor man’s sorrow and misery, and I struggle to search his grief for lessons. (Job 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23).
I suppose, too, I don’t know how to get involved. What do we do with Job’s story? What do I say to Job or anyone else who has lost everything, everyone, he loved? How do I care for a person who wishes he would have never been born?
And then, too, I hardly know what to say to God about all this besides, I don’t know what to do here. I wonder, what does He want me to do with these horrible, sad facts about Job’s life?
I don’t have answers, just a nudging in my heart that God wants me to be uncomfortable here, in this safe spot with Him and His Word, so that He can stretch me, love me, show me. Perhaps eventually, with enough time spent in His presence I will have the words. Perhaps then I will know what to do.
Today is the Feast of our Guardian Angels, the beings God has sent to guide and guard us through our days. In light of the readings, I wonder how often they try to guide us to prayer, the Bible, or the Sacraments so that God can form us while we are close to Him. I also wonder how often they try to guide us to love and reach and touch and serve in ways that are uncomfortable. And how often do I ignore them?
Today let us all ask the Holy Spirit to be receptive to the ways our Guardian Angels are leading us, so that we may see those who need love, comfort, and joy.
Re-read today’s readings. Click back over. Sit in the uncomfortable parts and ask God what is here for you to take in and be changed by. Pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you.”
