Bali Jatra 2023!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bali Jatra is considered to be Asia's largest open trade fair. It starts from the day of Kartika Purnima every year and lasts for 7-8 days. The trade fair is held at Gadagadia Ghat of the Mahanadi River at Cuttack, Odisha.
Bali Jatra, meaning 'Bali ku Jatra' or 'voyage to Bali', is not just a trade fair, but a tribute to the ancient maritime history of Odisha. In ancient Kalinga, mariner merchants, known as Sadhabas travelled on ships to distant lands like Bali, Java, Sumatra, Sri Lanka etc. for trade. The ships they travelled in, are called Boitas in Odia.

Sadhabas are the combination of two Odia words, Sadhu (honest) and Byabasayi (businessman), meaning honest businessmen. Sadhabas used to undertake sea voyages to distant foreign lands for trade and commerce. They would start their journey on Kartika Purnima, as it is considered an auspicious date. Sadhabani (women of Sadhaba family) used to worship the ship and perform rituals for their safe journey and return. This is called Boita Bandana.

Hence, on the day of Kartika Purnima, every year, people of Odisha commemorate the maritime achievements of their ancestors by observing Boita Bandana festival. They light lamps and float small boats, symbolic of ancient Boitas in the water bodies. This ritual is also called Danga Bhasa, literally meaning 'floating of boats'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alongwith Boita Bandana festival, Bali Jatra is also held to pay homage to maritime history of ancient Odisha.
Every year, millions of people from all over Odisha and the world visit Cuttack to enjoy and experience the beauty of Bali Jatra.
Bali Jatra is not just a festival/fair/carnival, but emotion and pride of people of Odisha and nostalgic tour to childhood for Cuttakias.

November 26, 2023.
I drew a scenery for Kartika Purnima today. It depicts the scene of Boita Bandana. Boita Bandana is a unique Odia tradition for Kartika Purnima where we float boats with a diya on river or other water bodies to celebrate and remember Sadhabas' (ancient Odia merchants) sea voyages to distant lands.
We also commemorated this with Bali Jatra and it is Asia's largest open trade fair. It's starting tomorrow and I just can't wait anymore.
Tumblr media
Then, as usual, I collected pictures of Muruja from cousins, friends and neighbours.

My cousin has made a boat for boita bandana tomorrow. It is so cute.

One of my cousins visited Harishankar and send me pics. It is a picturesque temple in Gandhamardhan Hills of Bolangir District. The place is very peaceful and has a beautiful stream.
I had visited there in school with my mom and elder sister for an office excursion of my mom. I had loved that place and really wants to go back someday.
Happy Fourth Day of Panchuka to everyone!

The procession then moves towards the banks of the Mahanadi River, where the boat replicas are released into the water with fervent chants of “Aa Ko Bali Jao, Boita Bandana Aau Ta Bali Jao,” meaning “Go to Bali and come back with valor, take this Boita Bandana with you.” The river waters come alive as these small boats gracefully glide on its surface, creating a mesmerizing sight. This ritual signifies the symbolic voyage of the merchants to Bali and their desire for prosperity and success in their trade endeavors.
also hosts a splendid fair or mela, wherein thousands of stalls showcasing various arts, crafts, and handlooms can be found. Artisans, weavers, and traders from different parts of Odisha, as well as neighboring states, gather to display their craftsmanship and trade their unique products. Bhattarika
Our group’s history with Badamba is an old one. One of our numbers hails from the neighbourhood and there have been trips to the place all through college and beyond. Situated about 100 kms from Bhubaneshwar by road and about 75 km from Nayagarh, this old town is close to quite a number of temples.
Our latest trip began with an invitation to attend the Boita-Bandana (Boat Worship) festival held at Ratapat near Badamba. We decided to attend on the last day of the festival which is held on Kartik Purnima (23rd November 2018). So we started off from Bhubaneshwar on the day before at 8 in the morning. Our route started off Nandankanan Zoo. We travelled north off the new Mundali bridge but decided to return back to take the bridge across the Mahanadi on the Haldia-Talabasta Road. One the way we came across Devi-Dwara.
In earlier days Devi-Dwara used to be the spot for scenic shots of the Mahanadi river for Odia filmmakers but nowadays very few people visit this place, most preferring the nearby Charchika Temple or Anshupa Lake.

Boita Bandāna
Boita Bandāna (Odia: boita bandāṇa) also known as Dangā Bhasā (Odia: ଡଙ୍ଗା ଭସା ḍaṅgā bhasā), is a traditional Odia maritime and naval festival celebrated annually throughout Odisha, India.  The  name could be translated as "to float ritual boats and worshipping with  lighted lamp" and comes from the tradition of making decorated boats,  which are then floated on a river as a symbolic gesture of their  ancestors' voyage. Boita Bandana takes place in the early morning of Kartik Purnima which is the full moon day in the month Kartika in the traditional Odia calendar.  Since it falls on the lunar phase of the solar calendar, the exact date  of the festival changes every year. In the Gregorian calendar, the  festival usually falls in the month of November. The festival is a  celebrated to mark the commemoration on the day when Sadhabas (ancient Odia mariner merchants) would set sail to distant lands of mainland and insular Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka for trade and cultural exchange.A major commemoration of this festival called Bali Jatra is held at Gadagadia Ghata of Cuttack on the banks of Mahanadi river.

Lingaraj Temple, built in 11th century, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered as the largest temple of the city. Built by king Jajati Keshari of Soma Vansh, the main tower of this temple measures 180-feet in height. It is built in red stone and is a classic example of Kalinga style of architecture. The temple is divided into four sections―Garbh Griha (sanctum sanctorum), Yajna Shala (the hall of yajnas), Bhoga Mandap (the hall of offering) and the Natya Shala (hall of dance), and the spacious courtyard of the magnificent shrine comprises 50 small temples that are dedicated to several Gods of the Hindu pantheon. In the sanctum sanctorum, the linga of Lord Shiva is regarded as 'Swayambhu' (self-originated) and worshipped as both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It is said that when construction of Lingaraj Temple was about to be completed, Jagannath culture started growing in Odisha. Hence, the presiding deity here is known as Hari-Hara; Hari denotes Lord Vishnu and Hara meaning Lord Shiva. The Shivalinga in the sanctum of the temple rises to a height of 8 inches above the floor level, and is 8 feet in diameter. Although thousands of devotees visit the Lingaraj every day, the temple comes alive on the occasions of Shivaratri and Rukuna Rath Yatra. This temple is only accessible to Hindus. Located to the north of the temple is Bindusagar Lake, one of the popular picnic spots in the city. About 1300 ft long and 700 ft wide, this lake turns into a visual delight when thousands of people set sail tiny boats on the occasion of Boita Bandana that commemorates Odisha’s rich maritime history. On the western banks of the lake, lies the beautiful garden of Ekamravan (literally meaning one-mango-tree forest). Ekamravan finds mention in ancient Hindu mythological texts as an entire forest that comprised a single mango tree. 🙏🏼🙏 Follow us for more @everydayholiday.in 👣👣 #temple #travel #india #photography #travelphotography #love #lingrajtemple #travelgram #architecture #mondaymotivation #nature #hindu #photooftheday #god #instagram #art #asia #instagood #temples #culture #hinduism #wanderlust #history #ig #instatravel #beautiful #picoftheday (at Lingaraja Temple) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCkWn5iJc7r/?igshid=hka4yz8sxz0m

The oldest cultural and business trade truthful of Odisha that celebrates the state’s wealthy maritime gift is going to be determined as a state-level competition from this year.  That undoubtedly is nice news on condition that the truthful attracts immense footstep not solely from the various components of the state however additionally from different components of the planet. The virtually which means of Baliyatra is ³Voyage to Bali´. Bali is Associate in Nursing island of land and therefore the Baliyatra competition is usually celebrated within the coastal Odisha on the day of³Kartika Purnima´ that falls within the month of Nov per annum.  it's Associate in Nursing distinctive socio-cultural event with a history of a thousand years previous that commemorates the past association of the folks of Odisha with Bali and therefore the superb maritime tradition of trans-oceanic voyages they undertook to South East Asian Countries.  The celebration ofBaliyatra on the Bank of stream Mahanadi takes the North American nation back to recollect our ancestral cultural heritage and maritime gift. throughout this era the traders of Odisha (Sadhabapuas) were enterprise voyages, on the ocean trade route, on immense boats referred to as Boita´ from this place on the full phase of the moon day within the month of Nov (During the month of Kartika).  therefore Kartika Purnima is Associate in Nursing auspicious day for the folks of Odisha because the Sailors wont to begin their voyage to the places like Bali, Java island, Sumatra inland, and Srilanka for a no-hit trade. Baliyatra isn't solely a ritual of the sailing of Boats on Kartika Purnima day however it additionally represents the traditional maritime tradition of Odisha and economic glory. The present Odisha once fashioned a part of the traditional kingdom of ³Kalinga´ and therefore the Kalinga sailors had command on maritime activities of Asian country within the past. This brave Kalingan Sailors were creating throughout voyages to totally different distant lands of the planet. therefore nice was the celebrity of Kalinga as a maritime power in precedent days that ³Kali Das´ in his Raghuvansa said the king of Kalinga because the ³Lord of Sea´.  By the start of the era the merchants of Odisha or Kalinga established cultural and trade ties with countries like land, Asian country and Kingdom of Cambodia. Bali, Java & Sumatra were the ports most frequented by the merchants from Odisha. The maritime history of Kalinga sailors lies cluttered during this island land. ³Boita Bandana´ or ³See off´ ceremony of the merchants in the day of Kartika Purnima is determined throughout Odisha. On today the ladies people of Odisha sail tiny boats created out of cork, colored paper, and banana bark lit by a lamp on all offered water. Courses within the same fashion within which the women of past times wont to send their men on voyages want them well. In Kalinga (Odisha) & Bali (Indonesia), one will notice the influence of every different culture to a substantial extent. a ton of similarities square measure found between the culture and life form of the folks of each the countries. each Bali & Odisha boast of the strength of their culture in touristry that has sleek dance forms, art and handicrafts, temples monuments and distinctive form of design, tie & dye, weaving technique and stylish textile styles, specialties of their cooking and tranquil unfold of their coconut fringed golden beaches.  Besides, we tend to can also notice enormous similarities between ³Boita Bandana´s event celebrated in Odisha with the celebration of Masakapan Tukad´ competition of Bali wherever similar floating of toy boats in memory of maritime ancestors is formed. The ³LOYKRATHONG´ or ³LOY´ competition organized by Thailand within the month of December represents pattern floating of boats that has Associate in Nursing adequate similarities with Odishan custom.  The legend associated with ³Boita Bandana´ or Baliyatra competition signifies the association of Taa-poi & celebration of the ritual of Khudurukuni OSHA by each household of Odisha.  The legend says Taa-poi was sick treated by her sisters-in-law throughout the sailing amount of her seven brothers however it absolutely was Maa Mangala- the ocean god  who  fined them for his or her sick treatment. except for different places, Baliyatra competition is well known with a lot of eclat and grandeur within the historic town of CUTTACK for seven days from Kartika Purnima on the bank of the stream Mahanadi.
