“KALLAH!”
The prince whirled around, swords in hand. He had never heard his mother scream like that, and he dashed back down the hall, his blood pounding in his ears as he ran. There were intruders in the palace. They’d had warnings that the Jotuun were invading, but he had no idea they were already this close. There was blood on the floors. Blood on his hands. 
“Maman!” he shouted, sliding around the corner, swords at the ready. It was a good thing too, as hands scrambled to grab hold of his already torn clothing, smearing the blood that already burned on his forearms. 
More blood joined what was already on his skin as he fought to reach his mother. 
“STOP, BOY!” the man screamed. 
Kallah, encircled by enemies, looked past the foreigners and found his mother staring at him, eyes bulging with fear. “Kallah, help,” she whimpered as the man, bearing the colors of a general in the Jotuun army, held a blade to her throat. 
“Stand down, princeling,” the general said, baring his teeth in a mockery of a smile. 
Kallah tightened his grip on his swords, staring at his mother who held his gaze like her life depended on it. She kept mouthing please, begging for her life silently as the general watched Kallah, delighted by the pain he had caused thus far. 
Kallah knew there were too many people. There were too many soldiers around him for him to reach his mother in time. It was an impossible decision and she could see what decision he was starting to come to. She shook her head as desperately as she could with a knife to her throat. 
“No, Kallah, don’t, they can be reasoned with, don’t do it-”
“They can’t, Maman,” he said heavily, feeling heat well in his throat and eyes as he spoke. “I’m so sorry. I promise to take care of the kingdom. I’m so sorry.”
The general laughed as, with tears rolling down his cheeks, Kallah hacked through man after man. He did not see his mother fall, but he heard her body hit the floor.

Toruk was thrown to the floor in the throne room, slamming into servants that were already on their knees. Toruk struggled to sort himself out without any help as the people around him remained frozen with fear and confusion. He finally got himself sorted out and looked up at the throne where a strange man sat, looking very smug about his position as he did so. 
One of the Jutunites that stood by the throne called, “All hail your new king, Lord Isaac!”
The Jotuunites lined along the walls cheered fervently as the new king by way of conquer stood up, smiling and holding up his hand. 
“Not just yet, my warriors. We have some loose ends to deal with.”
Another loud cheer went up as a side door opened, usually used by servants, and in came warriors with two bound people. They shoved the two forward, and the younger of them caught himself on his knees while the older slammed into the ground without the strength to keep from hitting his head off the stone. 
Toruk’s nose throbbed in sympathy as whispers ran through the servants. 
“King?”
“Is that the king?” 
“What have they done to them?”
“Are they going to kill the prince?”
“Oh, I can’t look.”
Toruk, surprised, strained to see a bit better and, sure enough, the prince, bloodied and stripped of his rank, knelt on the stone, his father collapsed next to him. 
The prince looked up swiftly as the general stood up, axe in hand as he made his way over slowly, as though he was putting on a show. The Jotuunites seemed to appreciate it as they cheered for their general as he stopped in front of the two monarchs. 
“I’m guessing you’re wishing you’d accepted our proposal to give us aid now, hmm, old man?” Isaac asked, nudging the king’s face with his boot. 
The king didn’t move and suddenly the dull thud that rang out as he fell echoed over and over again in Toruk’s head. 
Isaac frowned, kicking the king, rolling the man over in one movement. He stared down at him and clicked his tongue. “Well, you’re no fun, are you? I had a whole speech prepared.”
He lifted his hand and let his axe fall. 
Toruk couldn’t look away, the horrible crunch already printed into his memory as blood seeped across the ground. 
The prince screamed, trying to throw himself forward, but Isaac kicked him back. 
The prince writhed on the ground, trying to get his breath back, coated in blood, a new layer of his father’s fresh on his skin. 
The prince was terrified. He stared up at Isaac with absolute fear and horror. It made the prince human in all of the servants' eyes. 
Toruk desperately wished the Prince wasn’t human. 
Someone, in a shaky and warbling voice, sang the death prayer and others whispered along. Toruk didn’t have the courage to even look somewhere else for the fear of drawing attention to himself as the general dragged his gaze over the group of servants. He smiled and looked back down at the prince. 
“You are certainly more entertaining than your parents…. Perhaps I shall wait to kill you. We could make a festival out of it, hmm? Distribute flayed strips of flesh to your people as a gift?”
The prince shuddered on the ground, bruises starting to show on his ribs from where he was kicked. “Please,” he whispered.
“Oh? Please what?”
The prince looked away from Isaac, shivering again as he stared at a wall rather than look towards his servants, none of whom did anything to stand up and help him. 
Toruk blinked. Should he? Should he stand up? He ought to stand up. He should get up and rally the other servants and protect the prince. There were a fair amount of servants. Could they?
But they were not warriors and the Jotuunites had blades of all shapes and sizes. They were watching and leering over them all daring them to. 
But wouldn’t it be better to die while trying? Would it be better to reach the other side and say that at least he tried? 
His father had a broken leg. His mother couldn’t take care of the whole family by herself. His siblings would have to help and they couldn’t keep getting education. They needed him. 
His family or his kingdom? What sort of choice was that?
Toruk couldn’t decide, his legs beginning to cramp as he tightened them to get up and then released them as the fear rose up in the depths of his stomach and then tightened them as he tried to rally just himself to get up and-
They were taking the prince, dragging him out alive. 
Toruk, now dizzy, stayed on the floor. 
“I do think we deserve to celebrate, hmm?” Isaac asked, delighted. “This has been a very successful take over if I do say so myself. Where can we find the wine in this place?”
His eyes swept over the servants, waiting for someone to speak up.
“Well? Who’s in charge of that?” he asked, a growl in his tone as his warriors grumbled, lifting their weapons. 
In a flurry of motion, Toruk was pushed out of the group and fell to his hands and knees at the front of the group. He froze there, his hair in disarray and in his bloodied face as he felt Isaac’s gaze on him. 
“Oi, are you in charge of the wine!?”
Toruk swallowed and slowly sat back on his knees, keeping his eyes on the floor as he said, “I am the storeroom manager. The, uh, the wine is in the 8th lower storeroom. The stairs are, um, by the kitchens, sir.”
“Perfect! Kata, go ahead and take some warriors to break some of that out.”
Toruk nearly cricked his neck looking up to find Kata moving among the warriors like she was one of them. She avoided his eyes as she left the room.
“Good. You will all be serving me and my men as we celebrate tonight. And do not disobey us. Wouldn’t want more blood staining our floors now, would we?”
The servants murmured assent and Toruk, now the head of the group, nodded along with them. Coward.

Toruk stood behind Isaac, almost numb at this point. His nose still throbbed, and it bled on and off. He was feeling light headed and shaky and there was a pain in his shoulder that said it must have been wrenched at some point during the day, though he had no idea when as he had been manhandled so many times. It could have been from his first fall, or being thrown into the crowd of servants, or being shoved to the front so quickly and having to catch himself, or from the many times that one of the rambunctious warriors had thrown him, just because they could. 
He held a bottle of wine in shaky hands, now in the relatively safe job of pouring wine for Isaac every time he ran low, staring into the middle distance and just waiting for it all to be over. How much did the city know? Would their own warriors be coming to save them? Was the prince still alive? 
He couldn’t think about the prince. He was an idiotic coward and it would be his fault if the man were dead. The guilt was a small creature living in his chest, though he knew for a surety that it would grow when the numbness faded. He had no idea if he would be able to live with himself. 
“Alright, alright, tha’s ‘nough,” Isaac called, tugging at his beard. “You all leave now. Leave ta wine.”
“Sire,” one of his more sober guards called, “Do we wanna keep them all in the palace.”
“Yeahhhhhh. Have them branded so we cn tell them apart from ours, kay? On the wrist or sommut.”
Toruk stirred from his numbness, horror shooting into his gut. “Sir, please. You can identify us by our belts.”
Isaac turned and growled, grabbing Toruk by the sleeve and jerking him towards him. “Is tha’s so? If you’re so scare of tha, how’s this for ya?”
Isaac pulled out a knife and slammed it it through Toruk’s wrist, driving the blade into the arm of the chair. Isaac laughed as Toruk sobbed, hand around the hilt of the knife but too shocked and dizzy to get it out. 
Isaac jerked it out and Toruk fell to the floor, cradling his wrist, pressing cloth to it to stop the bleeding. 
“Serves ya right,” Isaac laughed before taking another swig of wine. 
It wasn’t until every one of the palace servants were branded that Toruk was able to scrape himself from the floor. No one argued with the branding after that. 
They did not get to go home. They were left to sleep in an empty guest room, the bed reserved for the old and the floor having to do for everyone else. They barely fit in the room, having to sit up as the night dragged on, leaning on one another to sleep. 
And after his complaint about the branding, Toruk still had to have his wrist cauterized by the cook to stop the bleeding. Stupid cowardly complaint. Not brave enough to stand up and cowardly enough to try and wriggle out of pain. Toruk didn’t have much more time to berate himself after that before his exhaustion and numbness dragged him under.

“No matter how far from home he goes, he is still--he is still a King, it is ingrained in him from the inside out. And as much as I am afraid of it, it is a great deal to do with why I am still in love with him.” Eilithe said with remorse clinging to the tip of her tongue. Mavas was among the few who could understand what it meant to love and be loyal to Kurel An’diel, the weight of all that he asked. Not just all he asked-- but what he gave in kind. That night she came home to a half-empty house. Eilonwy, gone to Merchant Alley with her friend. Kurel, down at the docks with their second eldest son. Malik was greeted her at the door and clung to her leg. “You can go home, Dianora--I’ve got him,” she told her trusted caretaker. The white-haired Kaldorei bowed with a smile-- leaving mother and son alone. As the boy drifted in and out of sleep, Eilithe  found herself thinking far back.  It was nearly twenty years ago.

“Do you want me to be weak? Vulnerable? So you can take everything I have built? I am not Lucia. I am stronger than her. I am still alive. You took her ship, her land, part of her heart even– but you will take none of that from me,” Eilithe spat at him
“Your righ’ to be intimidated,” Kurel said against her ear. “If the opportunity arose, I’d take it all from you,” he finished, leaving Eilithe to consider the terms he’d given. Conditions. For his fleet to join hers on the water. 
Three days later she’d written him a letter, unable to face a blind man that could see right through her. By now, Eilithe couldn’t recall the exactly what the letter said. Only how it had ended: 
Finally, please note that I am willing to negotiate without being a ‘hostile cunt’- this includes my openness to anything I can do to help you.
Until next we meet, Eilithe Duskbringer
And of course how he’d replied.

First. Yes. Next. Good. Of course.

She had scoffed at the title, ignorant that his claim to royalty laid not with the sea but the sand. 
No, she would give him so much more than a ship or land. She gave him everything. And he had given everything in kind. The weight of Malik’s sleeping body brought Eilithe’s attention back to the present. His cheek was pressed into her stomach, mouth agape and is mismatched eyes lulled shut. A single curl was pushed away from the boy’s face with a single clawed finger. 
Of the things he’d given, his own love and his children were those she held closest to her chest. Even the children who were far away now. Somewhere she could no longer  protect them.

Malik was limp as Eilithe carried him up the stairs to his bed. As she set him into his bed, she lingered there in his doorway until she dragged herself back downstairs to the study. Two parchments obtained, Eilithe set to work on the first letter. 
Eronal,
It has been many years since you and I have spoken and I hope to every God that will hear me that you are alive. None would speak on your fate after Ammon was unseated and the fault lies with me for never seeking you out myself.
If there is still hope in you, if there is still fight in you-- I beg that we arrange a meeting. My messenger will ensure you are safe and that our messages are secured. 
Stay out of sight on the sands, Eilithe
By the time she’d finished the first, the front door creaked open. The footfalls went unheard-- which meant they were not Kurel’s. Without a knock, the office door pushed open slowly, Loren’s shoulder leaned into the frame. “You summoned?” He sounded almost bored by it, being called so late at night.  “You’re leaving at dawn,” Eilithe proclaimed, sealing the first letter and beginning the next. 
“Oh? Well, that’s much more exciting, my lady,” he eyed her desk with a hard gaze. “And where am I going?” 
Eilithe didn’t answer. The second letter contained no names-- for safety of her daughter above all else. 
Kallah, When you left home, I did not stop you; though with every ounce of my being I wanted to keep you here. I cannot say inside of this letter all the things I should have after your Uncle exposed truths to you that your father and I should have said long ago. But I will say this:
We never told you-- because it never mattered. Because I know what you are, before anything else, is good. You are witty and strong and you are my daughter. I knew that you would leave one day-- all children must when they become adults. And you, kallah, you were made to become one far too quickly. 
Now, more than ever, we need you at home. It is no longer safe for you to be where you are, so please, return to us before something terrible happens. I will explain everything. Every piece that was ever hidden from you and everything that has happened in your absence. 
Please come home, Mai
“Eilithe?” 
“Tanaris,” she responded curtly-- drying ink on the second letter before she sealed it up and made a small ‘x’ on the back of its envelope. “The first letter you will give to Eronal Dawnseeker-- if she still lives. She’ll be hard to find. You remember what she looks like?”
“Blonde and fragile,” Loren responded. 
“Mm,” she stood to go to the wall, encircling a small range of mountains. “You see this portion of the sands? You don’t go there. Under any circumstances. If you are captured...”
“I know,” he said. “The second?”
“Karkah An’Diel, I’ve no idea where she is-- but if she is in Tanaris-- and she may be. Get. Her. Out. Call for back up if you have to and do not underestimate her,” Eilithe warned, giving him a stern stare. 
“I remember, Lady An’Diel.” 
“Karkah’s letter is priority--once you find her, abandon search for Eronal. And Loren, if you find Severin out there...somewhere. Capture him or finish what you started.”

He paused for a moment, lips pursed together-- eyes tight on Eilithe’s form. “What?” He asked, brow quirking upward. 
“He survived. He survived and he very well might become a danger to my entire family now. At the very best, he might be able to help us.” Eilithe crossed her arms, staring out of the back window. “Now go back to Harbinger’s Gate. Before Kurel returns and he decides he is in a particularly foolish mood.”  Not another word came from the whisper--silence, before the click of the front door came. Eilithe waited for a few beats before she wandered into the front room.
When the familiar and bulky silhouette came through that door, Eilithe stopped him there in the doorway. Black hair that hung around his face came from his father and his father’s father. His frame was imposing, even in comparison to taller, full-blooded Kaldorei.  She could not deny that even this far from the sands he was still-- every inch, the scorpid king. 
Eilithe pressed a kiss to the corner of his lips as the door shut behind him. The immediate show of affection and outright clinginess of his wife might’ve sparked paranoia in Kurel An’Diel-- but she gave him no seconds to protest before she spoke softly against his ear. 
“Come to bed.”

These orthodox Jewish organizations make this admission perhaps out of the belief that Jewish supremacy is so well-established in the modern world that they need not concern themselves with adverse reactions. Q: In the morning blessings we recite the paragraph of Aylu Devorim. This is a list brought down from the Talmud about acts that we do in this world that we get rewarded in the Next World. It ends that learning Torah is equvalent to all of these acts.
The question was presented to me as follows: How can a person who sits and learns get the same reward as the person who goes out of his way and does a chessed like visiting the sick, when he really doe not have the time? And how can the "learner" be compared, regarding reward, to somebody that if it was not for that person the sick person will be left alone?
A: Because while it is great to visit a sick person, the power by which the sick are healed is created by those learning Torah.
The spiritual energy that makes the sun shine, the grass grow, and rain to fall is created through learning Torah.
Torah sustains and maintains the world. Doing Mitzvos is of course great, but is the fulfillment, the bringing to fruition, of that which Torah creates.
Someone who visits the sick is like the mailman who delivers your paycheck. Someone who learns is like the one whose funds the check is from.
Q: But you still will not get your mail without the mailman? If a sick person needs a ride to the doctor, will the Torah learning get him there? Will Learning make the Chasan and Kallah happier? Doesn't someone have to do it, thereby they can't be learning, so why shouldn't they get "compensated" and get the same reward as Torah learning?
A: Just because 2 people are necessary components of the same action does not mean they get equal credit for that action. Bill Gates can't get his computer to you without the UPS boy who delivers it. But your ability to use the computer is certainly more due to Bill than to the UPS guy.
So too Torah is what fuels all the blessings in the world. Including the happiness of the Choson and Kallah, and the support of the poor. The Mitzvah-doers - and this is not to minimize their part c"v - merely fulfill what Torah learning allows.

These orthodox Jewish organizations make this admission perhaps out of the belief that Jewish supremacy is so well-established in the modern world that they need not concern themselves with adverse reactions.

He had not died. That was all Eilithe knew. She could feel him-- or at least she thought, when she laid down on the chaise of their balcony. In each star, she imagined she might see down on the desert sands which Kurel traveled. The temptation to run to him -- to die with him was torture. 
She was living out of her body.

The letter reached her and she dropped everything to attend to it and write back: 
Kallah,
This letter is addressed to ‘kallah’, I wanted you to know why. In my village, your children-- your nieces and nephews and little cousins, we call them ‘kal’ or ‘kallah’ for girls. It means ‘bright star’, our people are children of the stars the way you are a child of the desert. You are a star in the sand, Eronal.
 If you learn nothing else before you die-- learn to let go of obligation. When you do, you will find happiness. You will never be able to let go completely, but you can find a looser grip in some places. 
I found mine with Kurel. You see, he freed me of many obligations--of expectations. It is powerful to love someone without expecting anything back-- it took me many years to understand it. Anyway, I am saying that do not write to me for obligation. Write if it is what you want. Write if it what you need to get through this. 
I have heard of the woman call Mags-- from my son, Xavier. The boy you saved from the sand. The girl is Karkah. Though I did not birth either of them, I love them as my own. I do not know what the desert says about that-- but where I am from we do not damn children because they are not our own. I am thankful for Mags--Xavier said that she wept when she recognized him. I can only hope that she still holds Kurel dear. 
My husband believes that I am paranoid, and honestly, he is right. If Ammon is like Vishak-- there is no string he will not pull, no line he will not cross to ensure Kurel is dead. Mags may not be his mother-- but she loves him like one. I know you may not understand, but there is something about loving a child-- even if it isn’t yours. It is inexplicable. 
All I can say is that I would die and have my soul ripped and devoured by the creatures of the Other Side before I ever let pain befall any of my children. I pray Mags feels the same about Kurel.
As for asking about pasts, your father was mostly right. Asking for what you want directly seldom leads to what we want. In time you will learn the way-- the questions to ask, the actions to take to get men-- even as hardened as Kur’elnth An’diel to open up to you.

One last thing, if ever you are desperate and something happens to Kurel rub the stone he carries and say my name aloud.

I write to petition you both. I admit fully that I only stand to gain, should you both agree. 
Right now, somewhere in the desert, my husband is on his way to murder his son, a sol’den. I know you have both renounced my choice to marry an outsider that is unwilling to take the Mark-- but he is doing what he believe is right. He is keeping to our code.
In a matter of days, my mother-- under my order and her own free will, shall arrive at the last known location of the resistance caravan Kurel is leading. With her she carries a ley beacon.
I need forces ready to go through at a moment’s notice. Do this and I will concede to Fadrina my stakes to the Shan’di. I beg of you. There are reasons that our people never crossed into the desert. If we do nothing-- if we do not even prepare many innocent people will die.
