Kim Possible Villains and their Kids Headcanons
Aka Anna wants to talk about her KP OCs
A lot of the kiddos essentially grow up together. Showing up at villainy events all the time.
I’ve talked a little about my Drakgo baby, Laserbeam, but she also has a brother named Dynamite and a sister named Gunpowder. (Gunpowder is not mine though, they belong to a friend of mine).
Junior and Bonnie? Not endgame. That is a gay man. But he does task her with being the surrogate for Junior and his boyfriend’s daughter Señorita.
Despite Monkey Fist hating children with every bone in his body, he ends up adopting a child named Xiaojian. She is raised as his apprentice.
How is Monkey Fist no longer statue? Personally I go with another timeline messing with Time Monkey.
Xiaojian was born from the monkey Chippy, turned semi human by DNAmy.
On a Henchco outing when they were kids, Dynamite convinced Xiaojian to sneak into a monkey enclosure then proceeded to leave her there.
Xiaojian and Laserbeam dated for a short while. They are now bitter exes.
Because of how bad the breakup was, Señorita adopted a "no dating anyone with Jack Hench in their contacts" policy.
Somehow all the kids end up with Duff as the "favorite not uncle" (for Xiaojian "Nae yer daddy")
When Dynamite was starting their gender journey, they often could be found at Duff's hitting shots.
Xiaojian learnt Scottish Gaelic and she and Duff tease Monkey Fist often.
She really thinks Monty and Duff need to just get together already.
Señorita wanting to prove some other rich people she was better than them had Duff teach her to golf.
Señorita follows her Papi’s dream of being a big pop star.
In a world where multiple Disney medias exist in the same universe, Señorita grew up watching Ernesto De La Cruz movies with her Abuelo.
Along the same lines, Dynamite once broke up with someone because they said 4*Town was better than Oh Boyz.
Dynamite loves webcomics. Would 100% be that Homestuck fan.
Sharpies are on high watch in the household. If not to turn grey a la Homestuck, Dynamite would recreate Sharpie Bath to turn Blue.
Dynamite was born in Colorado. Laserbeam in California.
Dr Drakken got a vasectomy after Dynamite was born.
Estelle Lipsky? The kiddos call her different things. Laserbeam calls her GamGam, Dynamite calls her GramGram, Gunpowder calls her Bob.
Somehow, the Drakkens end up always celebrating big holidays with the Possible-Stoppables. It is never planned but space is usually made for the other party.
I see Dr D having Jewish heritage but being non-religious. The kids however had Christmas and Hannukah growing up.
Shego watched Dr Drakken insist on designing and making an Offbrand Barbie Dreamhouse (Baddie’s Dream Lair maybe?)
Laserbeam swears she is not superstitious. She comes from a family of brainiacs so there’s reasoning for that which might be dubbed peculiar. And she knows Aliens and Ghosts and weird shit exists. Doesn’t consider that superstition.
However, she isn’t aware of habits which make her seem she is. Like putting on a specific hoodie whenever an assignment is just not seeming right.
Laserbeam often keeps a slurry of meds and sensory things in her purse because you can’t do evil in bad health.
Laserbeam once performed a VERY heated rendition of Holding Out For A Hero that ended up with her grounded (so worth it though).
While I stand by the idea that Laserbeam and Dynamite are not in frequent contact with their maternal uncles, I like to imagine Mego pops in from time to time.
Laserbeam, Dynamite, and Gunpowder were homeschooled.
The Drakgo babies were named after the song Killer Queen.
Dynamite and Drakken can often be found in the lab late at night. They’ll get inspiration for a project randomly and then suddenly the entire lair is being woken up to dad rock™️.
Laserbeam’s full name is Laserbeam Olivia Drakken. When she has to go undercover she will use Olivia Lipsky.
Dynamite’s full name is Dynamite Andrew Drakken.

Tumblr tried to kill this post multiple times now so let's try this again. Of course like, commission artists on here and whatnot, but branch out from there too. Buy shirts made by local artists. Buy a print from the guy with a booth at the fair. Go to comic con and buy from the locals that are doing what they love. Find an artist doing something you never thought someone could make recreationally and buy from them.
I love seeing my commissioned art when I open my phone. I love seeing @esperanta-dragon's stained glass sun catcher above my hamster's cage. I love my Onyxia plush made by hand by Hebi Haberdashery. I love my @fuckyoubaker shirts and consistently they get complimented the most out of my wardrobe. I just found out about Wizard of Barge and can't wait to get a bunch of clothes from there. I still have six of the Uptown Girl comic collections on my bookshelf, a series made by Bob Lipski, a local to my area, and I regret that I never got the chance to go back and buy more from him. I bought a bunch of albums from Forrest Day, an independent artist I found on Spotify that I fell in love with, threw an extra twenty his way, and he sent an enthusiastic email thanking me.
Your life needs art in your day to day life, and your soul will be happy with having unique things being made by people who are passionate about their craft. My only regret is that I don't get the opportunity to do this more.
Screaming crying holding you by your shirt collar saying SUPPORT ARTISTS MONETARILY FOR FUN YOU'LL LOVE YOURSELF MORE.

“Am I going too far?”
“No no no, you went too far seven hours ago. Now you’re going to prison.”
“Wonderful! It’s a date then!”

Joss: Year 2
Down Town; 0941
Crisp autumn air blusters through the ocean town of Idle City. The scent of salt and spiced apple cider carried on the breeze. A long forgotten liveliness permeates throughout the streets. The quaint corner shops freely welcoming residents, now with no threat of unrest from the local mobs.
“Ah, you know what, Drew. After that bizarro string of bank thefts last couple weeks, this... this is nice.” Joss, sighing with relief. The young woman perched atop the edge an old town building; quietly observing the community usher in the Halloween season.
“Right? I’ve experienced less hassle dealing with Jack Hench, and you can quote me on that.” Drew Lipsky quips from the device in her ear. From his island-side balcony, he takes a generous sip of his cocoa-moo infused coffee.
“Didn’t Hench deal with you eighty percent of the time? I should go quote that to him.” Raising an eyebrow, the brunette chuckles.
“Ngh.. pass. The only quote that man cares about is his bank statement.”, Huffs the former supervillain.
“Y’know, you should bring Jay trick or treating this year, -we can carve pumpkins! He would love-”
Abruptly before she could finish her sentence, a blast rattles and quakes the area. The streets run eerily quiet, in a fog of confusion from the people below.
“What the-? Gah- damnit.” Cursing to herself.
“Joss? What was that noise? What’s happening?”
“I don’t know yet. Sounded like there was an explosion near the Carlson district. I’m jettin’ there now.” Sprinting her way to the fire escape, Joss seamlessly dons her modest domino mask. After a few years, aided by the actions of the petty and the thanks of the grateful, the cloak was beginning to feel cozy resting upon her face. Like it belonged there.
Jumping on her 400 Svartpilen tucked away carefully in the ally. The young vigilante revs the engine to life, and speeds to the source of the disturbance.
‘You just had to go and jinx it, didn'tcha Joss?’
“The hell..?” Joss utters upon arriving at the bewildering scene. Switching on the camera of her shades, “Hey, Drew.. you seeing this?”
“Yes.. I am. That doesn’t look like an accident explosion either. The angle of impact looks precise. A carefully crafted chaos.” Drakken informs, scrutinizing the picture on his screen.
The research and innovation section of a Cougar Motors factory had been blasted away, leaving rubble and smoke scattered in every direction. Frantic employees and pedestrians alike bound from site. The scream of sirens growing ever closer.
Scanning the area for what could have caused such mayhem, ‘Holy crap... what blew the building-...gotcha.’
“Please, everyone don’t panic. Or do, doesn’t matter. I’ll still leave with what I came for either way.” An off-hand, feminine voice echos from the roof of the now- dilapidated structure. Slyly pocketing a minuscule hardrive.
“Which is what, exactly?” Joss’ firm voice interrupting the intruder from behind.
“Oh, look who I dug out of the wood work. Karma, Karma. I’ve heard rumours of some nutter playing dress up in Idle City. Thought you would be more dramatic.” Jeers the woman, clad in Victorian-punk attire.
A ruffled white blouse, umber dress trousers tucked into black combat boots, all pulled together by trim maroon suspenders. Fiery red bob swaying in the wind.
‘Is that a wig...?’
“My welcome ran out on the west coast. So I thought I’d finish shopping here.”, The eccentric woman continues.
“Well, there are better ways to get a car. Online.. used... empty intel agency lots...”, muttering the last of her words, Joss steels herself ever so slightly.
“Hmhm. Thanks for suggestions, mate. Maybe I’ll think about them on my way to get strawberry crepes.” With a final snicker, she turns on her heels to make her exit.
“No.” Joss declares, quickly and deliberately snatching the culprits wrist. Curiously, hazel eyes glance down to the gloved fist holding her back.
‘Okay, then.’, she shrugs. It had been a while since her last good tussle.
Without warning, she’s sweeps Joss’ legs from under her, quick as lighting a knee connects to the vigilante’s stomach.
“Argh!” Swiftly recovering, Joss lunges toward her assailant, blocking a well aimed punch in her efforts.
“Joss are you okay?”, from her ear, the concerned voice perks up. Skilfully capricious and violent blows are exchanged. Leaving Drakken to blindly follow the brawl.
Upper cuts,
kidney punches,
side kicks,
swings and misses.
Battling across the shrewd covering, the two women become more hap-hazardous with every stroke.
‘I gotta end this before someone gets hurt.’ Thinking decisively, Joss reaches for the restraining cable in the inside of her jacket.
“Hoho! You can fight.”, exclaims the brash woman. Eyeing the cable in Joss’ hand, “You know, I haven’t had this much excitement in a long time. Wouldn’t mind taking you for those crepes, either. What do you say?”
‘...Is she flirting with me?’ Dumbstruck, Joss fails to see past the woman’s devilish smirk, completely missing the brass bracelet-like gadget she produced from inside her sleeve. A momentum amplifier. Able to concentrate energy and redirect it at will. A tool villains in the old days would describe as “Doomsday’s free lunch and your nemesis is buying.”
As rapidly as they entered each other’s life, with a parry and mutual defiance, the woman locks the apparatus to her enemy’s wrist.
“Think about it, you know? See ya later, mate.”Charging the device around her adversary’s wrist, gracing her a coy wink.
“Uh oh.”, Joss deadpans. She knows what’s coming next, and is not going to be fun.
With one forceful toss, Joss is sent hurling off of the building, colliding with the brick security post below. Impacting with a solid thunk.
“......gah...ugh....”, Joss groans in pain.
“Kid, talk to me.”
“She threw me around... like a rag doll... what the hell...?,” achingly rolling onto her back. “I- I’m just gonna lay here for a minute, Drew.”
—-
Gingerly getting lost in the crowds, the mystery woman lets her thoughts wander to the day’s escapades. Browsing the various autumn decor in shop windows, hardrive safe in hand.
‘Hm. Karma. Didn’t think that would have been that much fun.. She was kinda cute too...”

Welcome to the Neighborhood - Chapter 3/ The Baby Shower - Drakgo Fiction
@sweet-or-sarcastic // @anavrp // @sophiecooper18 // @random-emerald-thoughts // @benjimators // @marvelousavengfulslytherin // @littlevirago // @evielovesfood // @dianenguyenbjh // @brianaisontheinterwebs // @saultnpeppah // @poisonivy123 // @dragonrider167 // @dangerouswxmen // @galevwide // @disneyevilprincessblog
Shego was nearing the end of her pregnancy when she finally conceded to having a baby shower thrown for her.
She still felt self-conscious and uncomfortable about being pregnant. She never really wanted kids or imagined she would have kids until things got serious with Drakken. Shego felt like pregnancy wasn’t in her nature, but there she was, seven and a half months pregnant with a baby girl to be named Rhea.
Just as uncomfortable as she was mentally, she was physically. Shego wasn’t sure she could go through this again. Just because she didn’t have a period didn’t mean she didn’t bleed from somewhere else! More than once she had to deal with a nose bleed and even her gums bled at one point! She was still nauseous and always hot. She felt as big as a house. She hated it! She hated being pregnant! If anyone thought she was caustic before…
Her work life may be the only thing that was faring well in her eyes. Just around her third month, Shego was granted maternity leave. Her job was too dangerous for a pregnant woman. Thus, she went back to her old stomping grounds, substitute teaching. And okay, maybe this time around she enjoyed the littler kids more than the older.
Shego often caught herself wondering about the child growing inside her when substituting for the lower grades. She liked the way one student had her hair done and would have to remember it for Rhea. She wondered if Rhea would be the bubbly little girl with bright eyes or the quiet reader with a thirst for words. Inevitably, she would run into trouble makers whose parents let them get away with far too much and say to herself Rhea will not be like that.
Jill and Savannah, her longest friends, constantly pestered Shego about letting one of them throw her a baby shower. Shego never saw the point of a shower. Rhea had everything she needed already, and everyone (that Shego wanted) would be at the hospital when she was born. A shower felt like she was showing off she was pregnant and felt greedy to her.
Then, her own mother took things into her hands. Shego literally received an invitation to her own baby shower in the mail.
It wasn’t that Shego was estranged from her mother like she was her father. On the contrary, they spoke daily, and she had an amazing relationship with her mother. Her mother, Kate, simply knew her daughter well enough to know that if there was to be a shower, she’d have to take it into her own hands. With the help of Jill, Savannah and her son-in-law, the shower was planned behind Shego’s back. The only thing Shego did for the shower was to make a post on the neighborhood Facebook group to warn everyone that the neighborhood may be a bit crowded car-wise but that she would make sure it wouldn’t be an issue. Yeah, she may be a former villain, but she hated it when people were inconsiderate.
Shego sighed and admitted defeat. Apparently, Drew wanted to throw one and Rhea was just as much his as she was hers and Shego couldn’t deny him anything.
The guest list was short. Just the parents to be, Jill, Savannah, Kate and Drakken’s mother, Miriam. Shego’s brothers were invited, but none wanted to risk getting their heads bitten off by their hormonal sister for not using a coaster.
Kate also knew her daughter well enough to know that Shego would be unlikely to participate in any games or activities that weren’t Cards Against Humanity or something just as politically incorrect. She herself conceded, planning a simple dinner and gifts party, though she was willing to bet she could get Drew to bob for pacifiers.
Shego did allow decorations which matched the theme of Rhea’s nursery; Starry Night by Van Gogh. Her room was painted deep blue with gold stars and glitter in the paint and fairy lights. The motif spread out into the living room with blue and gold crepe paper and streamers.
Kate did make her daughter wear a plastic tiara and sash for the party which Shego only put up a minor fuss about. She bribed Stephanie with the promise of a full month of early morning childcare for Rhea’s first month of life in Stephanie wore them.
Just as dessert was about to be served, there was a knock at the door. Drakken and Shego stood to answer the door, with Kate behind them. Shego peaked out a nearby window and sighed.
“Who’s that?” Kate asked.
Shego groaned, “Our annoying neighbor, Janice. She tries to get us to go to church with her, like, every Sunday.”
“I’ll take care of her,” Drakken said, his napkin still tucked into his collar, before he opened the door.
“Hello, Janice. We’re in the middle of our baby shower. Can we do this later?” He asked, eager to get back to the table a second helping. He noticed Jill eying the last dinner roll and she noticed that he noticed.
“Oh, it won’t take long,” Janice said as the party gathered behind the once evil doctor and sidekick. “I saw your post on the Facebook and thought I should bring over my homemade lemon squares!” Janice beamed. Drakken wasted no time in grabbing one for each hand and chomping down, “I make them with Youthful Essential Oil’s lemon oil!”
Drakken grimaced once the taste got to him, “Tastes like perfume. Why not use the actual lemon?”
Janice’s face deflated, she clearly never thought of that.
Drakken kept eating, “Yeah, these are terrible.” He started smacking like a toothless duck and grimacing at the taste but continued taking bites. “They taste like my grandma’s perfume.”
Savannah took a tiny piece and gagged, “It tastes like literal bile!” She said with her hand over her mouth.
Mama Lipsky shoved herself between her son and Shego. “Ya gotta get lemons from the orchard off highway 51.”
“Well, I don’t know what is sprayed all of those lemons. Pesticides and such.” Janice argued, holding her dish of perfumy lemon squares protectively.
“That’s Old Man Jenkin’s orchard. Everyone knows he’s been using natural stuff to get rid of pests since forever.” Jill said peaking from the back. “Like ladybugs and whatnot.”
“Who knows what’s in that bottle,” Shego said, “Essential oils are not regulated by the FDA. They can put anything in there. They aren’t even cleared to go on your skin, let alone in your mouth.”
Shego looked to Drakken, starting on his third piece. She shrugged, he was a lost cause anyway.
“Well, I guess it’s an acquired taste. Stephanie, I would love to host a pox party for your little one, my Jeremiah still needs to get the virus!” She said excitedly, “Oh I have so much to share you with you about those nasty vaccines!”
“You don’t vaccinate!?” Shego yelled. In fear of catching anything that could harm Rhea, she covered her mouth and nose in precaution. She hid behind her husband as a human shield. At this point, looking idiotic in a plastic tiara and sash were the least of Shego’s worries.
“I remember getting the smallpox vaccine in 1967 when I was a little girl. I still have the scar!” Mama Lipsky said proudly. “Have you ever seen someone with smallpox? It’s not a pretty sight.” She chided Janice.
Janice began to stumble over her words, trying to preach her message. “The science just isn’t there.”
“My husband is a scientist!” Shego screeched, her free fist clenched, still covering her mouth and nose.
“Yeah, vaccines have proven their merit, like, a million times over by now. Anyone who says otherwise is falling for pseudoscience and dribble.” Drakken said as he began to pull apart an oily lemon square in his hand, “Can I use this as cologne?” He asked Janice seriously.
“Lady, what do you do for a living?” Jill asked, her hands on her hips, “Where’s your degree?”
“Okay, that’s enough of this,” Kate said, wrangling everyone back inside.
Shego broke away from her mother’s guiding arm, “I don’t want you or any of your little toxic cretins around my family!” She hollered, “I will call the CDC to tent your ugly ass house of biological horrors!”
Drakken quickly scooped his wife up and closed the door.
“Steph, what did I tell you about antagonizing the neighbors? This was supposed to be a fresh start!” Drakken whined.
“Oh yeah, I’m antagonizing. Don’t come crying to me if Rhea is born with toes on her forehead because of those idiots!”
“Well, you did say that your neighbor Michael’s shoes were last season,” Savannah said, deliberately riling her friend up.
“Well, they were ugly!”
“Let’s have cake and ice cream!” Kate announced, trying to break up the tension.
The ruckus died down with the addition of dessert and the party resumed.
Drakken and Shego were cuddled on the couch, his arms around her as she leaned on him and her legs kicked up on the cushions. Everyone was in a deep discussion about what kind of parents they’d be as the couple laughed and enjoyed the company.
“Steph’s totally gonna be one of the tiger moms, but not like the crazy strict kind.” Jill said, adamantly, “the kind that goes Hulk if someone bothers their kids.” Still holding her plate of cake and chocolate ice cream, she flexed her arms and frowned deeply, her voice growling, “You hurt my kids! I hurt you! Roar!”
Shego laughed and rolled her eyes, playing the ends of her hair.
“Well, my Drewbie will be an excellent father!” Mama Lipsky smiled.
Then, there was another knock at the door.
Shego’s hands instantly flared green, “If that Karen Hun Bot is back you’ll have to squeegee her off the sidewalk after I’m done with her!” She yelled, standing up as fast as she could (which wasn’t really that fast anymore) and waddling to the door.
She threw open the door about to yell, “WHA -oh.”
On the doorstep stood more neighbors, Juliet with the elderly Miss Hazel on her arm, a small quilt slung over Juliet’s free arm.
“Janice get to ya first?” Juliet teased.
“You have no idea. C’mon in. Want some cake and ice cream?” Shego asked.
Of all the neighbors, Shego liked Juliet and Miss Hazel the best. Both were independent who didn’t take shit from anyone. Miss Hazel was wise and friendly and Shego could bitch about others with Juliet.
“No thank you, dear.” Hazel said, “We just popped over to give our congratulations and our presents.”
Juliet took a cookie that Mama Lipsky made as everyone sat back down.
“I hope this works with your color scheme,” Hazel said, offering the quilt to Shego.
“That’s why you asked me about the colors!” Drakken said in sudden understanding, snapping his fingers.
Hazel grinned and nodded.
The quilt was the size for a baby and simple with wisteria blossoms on the corners. “Is this for us?” Shego asked, hoping she was not misunderstanding and making herself look like a greedy fool.
“Indeed, it is.” Hazel answered, “I’ve been watching the wisteria you planted. I’m glad they’ve taken off so well.”
“It’s my favorite flower,” Shego was genuinely appreciative. “You really didn’t have to go through all the trouble…” She had only spoken to Hazel a few times. It was mostly Drew who knew her as he helped install her video doorbell, remote controlled and adaptive technologies that would help her remain independent. It was a win-win for him; he got to tinker and was paid in baked goods.
“It’s no trouble, darling,” Hazel said with a dismissive wave of her age gnarled hand. “It gave me something to do with my time. Every baby needs a handmade blanket.”
Juliet herself gifted several boxes of diapers and burp rags as well as a few new toys and treats for Commodore Puddles so he wouldn’t feel left out and act up.
The night ended with Shego realizing that neighborhoods and baby showers weren’t that bad.

Postmodernist movement, pop art, memphis, art deco
India, Ettore Sottsass, Michele de Lucchi, Andrea Branzi, and Nathalie du Pasquier
PREVAILING FEATURES OF MEMPHIS DESIGN:
Laminate and Terrazzo materials, which were usually found on floors, were incorporated into tables and lamps.
Squiggles, aka the Bacterio print, was designed by Sottsass in 1978.
Bright, multi-colored objects with a rejection of typical shapes. Often, instead of chair legs being rectangular, they’d be circles or triangles.
As the group fleshed out their project, Bob Dylan’s single, “Stuck Outside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” was playing on the turntable. After hearing the song many times in a row, Sottsass suggested calling the new venture “Memphis” as a reference to both the birthplace of Elvis Presley and the ancient capital of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. It was an aptly strange combination of ancient history and popular culture, made even more intriguing by the fact that the group was based in Italy. At the next meeting, the British designer George Sowden and the French illustrator Nathalie Du Pasquier were invited to join the group. Together, this small team of like-minded designers developed the Memphis ethos.
Memphis became the world’s most popular avant-garde movement.

David Foster Wallace, Falling On Black Days, And The Beauty Of Anachronism
Every New Year, like clockwork—pun intended—our Facebook feeds, newspages, Twitters, and Instagrams are flooded with “People We Lost” articles. Usually, I would click through, thinking, “Oh, I liked that movie/song/photo.” Everybody dies, though, and I wouldn’t think too much else of it.
This year is different.
In the beginning of The End of the Tour, David Lipsky (played by Jesse Eisenberg) receives a phone call from his editor, informing him that David Foster Wallace had died. Lipsky finds the old tapes of his interviews with him during the publicity tour for Infinite Jest, and listens to them, reminiscing on his time with the writer.
In May, a familiar face popped up on my newsfeed. It was unlike the time Bob Dylan did, when I had a moment of panic, fearing he was dead (thankfully, he only won a Nobel Prize). The face I saw was too young. He wasn’t supposed to die yet, and I assumed he must have won an award or released an album. Like Lipsky, my stomach dropped through the floor.
Chris Cornell died. He was 52.
Although they weren’t the most famous band out of Seattle in the late 80s and early 90s, Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign with a major label. They seemed poised to break out of the local scene, and they did, although Nirvana beat them to the punch. They had it all: a guitarist with a distinct style, who would incorporate elements of Indian music into their sound, much like The Beatles, the Stones, or Zeppelin before them, except with the added authenticity of actually being of Indian heritage. They had a skilled drummer and bassist.
And, they had a singer with a unique voice. He could almost be compared to Axl Rose, except without the whiny, piercing, almost Disney witch vocal quality. Chris Cornell had a haunting baritone you could feel in your bones, and transitioned seamlessly between octaves, often making me give up trying to sing along while I drove to work.
Soundgarden wasn’t typified by social activism like a band that came to the scene later, Pearl Jam. They weren’t the blind rage and angst of Nirvana. Though they could be very heavy when they wanted, they weren’t the groovy, thrashy grunge of Alice in Chains. They were honest, skilled musicians, and their style was comparable to early Black Sabbath. They wrote endlessly creative music, with existential, often brutal lyrics about depression, God, addiction, and finding a place in the world.
Those were the qualities that drew me in when I first started listening to Soundgarden, about twenty years too late. The lyrics resonated, and the instrumentation kept me interested. Chris sang about things that I had felt myself. Their music became a model for processing suffering with art. In fact, my first short story was named after the Soundgarden song, The Day I Tried To Live.
It surprised me how upset I was by the news of his death. Although I was a big fan, they weren’t the only band I listened to regularly, and I was too old to have any sort of Beatle-manic level of obsession with any musician. Sure, I was sad when Prince and David Bowie passed. But, many of my favorite artists were dead already.
Chris was different. He killed himself. I couldn’t get past that. Anyone who listened to his music knew he struggled with depression and addiction. Is there is something about art that attracts hurting people? That seemed to be true of grunge music. It was unexpected, still. He appeared to have beat his demons. It looked like he was on the other side. Just a few hours before he died, he was performing on stage, smiling. He looked happy.
Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, and now Chris Cornell. They were the leaders of a movement that rejected the excesses of bands that came before. They were more Velvet Underground than Def Leppard, and their authenticity endeared them to young people in the early 90s who were equally as annoyed with big hair, spandex, and tacky songs about sex.
They died in unglamorous ways: above the garage with a shotgun, malnourished and anemic in a locked apartment, overdosed in a bus, and suffocated in a bathroom. Despite the fact that some may want to turn them into something almost mythological, their deaths were not poetic.
There are children who miss them, families who eat with an empty chair at the table, and empty notebooks that will never be filled with their words. Still, people romanticize it, like addiction and suicide were terms of the devil’s deal, as if Cobain would have never been great without taking a shotgun to that room in 1994. Their deaths are tragic, and terrifying, and some have the impression that turning suffering into art cemented their fates, like they needed it to create anything remarkable.
It is much the same with David Foster Wallace. Even with all the brilliance in his writing, it is impossible to ignore the haunting descriptions of depression and isolation. The End of the Tour communicates this well, portraying him living in a house with only his dogs and piles of his own books filling the guest bedroom.
You don’t meet any of his friends in his town. His friends from college are scattered around the country, and even there, you can see a divide between Wallace and them. At one point, he and Lipsky get into an argument, and Lipsky accuses him of trying desperately to come off as normal, and not a genius, as if he fears being himself completely would drive people away.
Those conversations are part of what makes the movie so good. Maybe, if I was a better person, I would have only taken that away. But, there was one thing that kept bothering me, and it had nothing to do with the story, or so I thought.
It may have been a result of the project’s budget. It bothered me, despite how much I adore the film. Multiple times throughout the movie, there are discrepancies in the background. They would be walking through a parking lot, and I could see cars in the background that were produced fifteen years after the events portrayed, making it difficult to believe I was watching two men in the mid-90s.
It broke the illusion. I would remember that I wasn’t watching David Foster Wallace and David Lipsky argue outside of an airport, but Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel pretending to argue outside of an airport.
However, as I reflect on this year, I see it now as an artistic element, intentional or not. The new cars in the background whisper into my ear, “This isn’t real. He is gone.” That is the beauty of it, in a dark way. Those anachronisms are a reminder that something has changed irreversibly. It can’t actually be Wallace on screen there. He is dead.
That is how it will always be, whether is is the moment when you see through a hologram of Tupac at Coachella, or you are reminded that it is only an actor with a bandana, or you listen to a cover of Black Hole Sun and realize it will always feel a little out of place without Chris singing it. The inconsistencies destroy the mythology, leaving the reality of loss in the forefront. There is nothing poetic there, only something missing.
The end of the movie has a dreamlike presence. Lipsky is reading at a bookstore, like he was before he left to interview David Foster Wallace, and it cuts in and out of him with Wallace, but the only sounds are his own words about the man, and a rising score in the background. Everything is foggy, ethereal in a way, like the light reflecting through the windows and diffused in the haze is memory itself, becoming brighter, but less clear at the same time.
We see Wallace dancing, smiling, happy. Lipsky cries while he reads and thinks of his friend. That is the tragedy. We are never really alone, even in our darkest moments. But, those moments can push us away from the people who care about us, and eclipse all the wonderful things in life.
Wallace will never write again, and Cornell will never sing again. The anachronism in The End of the Tour is a reminder to everyone who ever hurt and created that—while beauty may be extracted from pain—losing the fight against that pain is not art, but the loss of art.
Chris Cornell was not a great songwriter simply because of his struggles. He was a great songwriter who turned his struggles into art. David Foster Wallace was not a great writer because he was depressed. He was a great writer who turned his depression, fear, joy, and desires into some of the most incredible writing of the last 100 years, and—in a period of extreme darkness—lost the light and joy that can be found in spite of and out of pain.
